James Clapper warns gov't shutdown increases risks of US intelligence agents betraying us
Clapper made this dire warning: "This is a dreamland for foreign intelligence services to recruit, particularly as employees -- already many of whom are subject to furloughs driven by sequestration -- are going to have … even greater financial challenges."

In other words, the shutdown is increasing the risk that intelligence and law enforcement officials fall into debt – and paying off debt is a key sales point foreign governments make to potential spies.

In fact, many U.S. intelligence agencies won't give security clearances to applicants who have significant debt out of fear they could be vulnerable to foreign governments' recruitment efforts.

It's bad enough that we've been betrayed by people who never missed receiving their paychecks. It's more than likely that unknown traitors have died of old age while receiving federal pensions.

New Air Force Italian Built Cargo Planes Fly Straight into Mothballs
The Pentagon is sending $50 million cargo planes straight from the assembly line to mothballs because it has no use for them, yet it still hasn't stopped ordering the aircraft, according to a report.

A dozen nearly new Italian-built C-27J Spartans have been shipped to an Air Force facility in Arizona dubbed "the boneyard," and five more currently under construction are likely headed for the same fate, according to an investigation by the Dayton Daily News. The Air Force has spent $567 million on 21 of the planes since 2007, according to purchasing officials at Dayton's Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Of those, 16 have been delivered -- with almost all sent directly to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, where some 4,400 aircraft and 13 aerospace vehicles, with a total value of more than $35 billion, sit unused.

The C-27J has the unique capability of taking off and landing on crude runways, Ethan Rosenkranz, national security analyst at the Project on Government Oversight, told the newspaper. But with sequestration dictating Pentagon cuts, the planes were deemed a luxury it couldn't afford.

"When they start discarding these programs, it's wasteful," he said.

The planes are built by Rome-based Alenia Aermacchi, under what was initially a $2 billion contract, though that was scaled back.

Which of course the ground forces need, but doesn't fit the Fighter Mafia's agenda. Form a Strategic Command like the Russians, put the bombers/missiles/etc in there and return to the old Army Air Corps - air/ground support like the Marines have in house.

#11  Gen. Raymond Odierno:

We — the Army has a stated requirement for intra- theater lift which we need in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, and we’ve discussed this over time. The Army has the C-23 Sherpa program which, frankly, is getting old and, frankly, will no longer be capable of doing the mission we need it to do in the future. However, so we’ve defined this requirement.

The Air Force has come back and said, “We can meet all of your intra-theater lift requirements with the C-130.” So we have worked with them to develop concepts that will put C-130s in direct support of Army units in order to meet these requirements.

So I — I would just answer your question by saying we identified the requirement for intra-theater lift. C-27 was one solution. The Air Force has come back and said “we can solve this problem using the C-130.” So we are working with them to come up with the procedures in order for us to solve this problem using the C-130.

Novartis vs Bushido
h/t Gates of Viena
Switzerland-based pharmaceutical kingpin Novartis
the people who invented ADHD to market Ritalin
is under investigation in Japan after two universities there recently caught the company engaging in scientific fraud. According to new reports, a former Novartis employee fabricated clinical trial data to exaggerate the benefits of the blood pressure drug Diovan (valsartan), which is currently licensed for use in more than 100 countries, and Japan's Ministry of Health is now trying to determine whether or not Novartis in any way violated Japanese law with its actions.

Earlier this year, five papers authored by the once prominent Japanese cardiologist Hiroaki Matsubara were retracted by the American Heart Association (AHA), including the main publication of the well-known 2009 Kyoto Heart Study. Not long after, the legitimacy of the Jikei Heart Trial, which was first published in The Lancet journal back in 2007, was also called into question. As it turns out, both clinical trials were worked on by former Novartis employee Nobuo Shirahashi, who failed to disclose his affiliation with Novartis while serving as a member of the statistical analysis organizations for both studies, and both studies were riddled with serious errors.

Obamacare's winners and losers
h/t Instapundit
Cindy Vinson and Tom Waschura are big believers in the Affordable Care Act. They vote independent and are proud to say they helped elect and re-elect President Barack Obama.

Yet, like many other Bay Area residents who pay for their own medical insurance, they were floored last week when they opened their bills: Their policies were being replaced with pricier plans that conform to all the requirements of the new health care law.

Vinson, of San Jose, will pay $1,800 more a year for an individual policy, while Waschura, of Portola Valley, will cough up almost $10,000 more for insurance for his family of four.

..."Of course, I want people to have health care," Vinson said. "I just didn't realize I would be the one who was going to pay for it personally."
Says it all, doesn't it?

VDH: Obama as Chaos

Amid all the charges and countercharges in Washington over the government shutdown, there is at least one common theme: Barack Obama’s various charges always lead to a dead end. They are chaos, and chaos is hard to understand, much less refute.

By that I mean when the president takes up a line of argument against his opponents, it cannot really be taken seriously — not just because it is usually not factual, but also because it always contradicts positions that Obama himself has taken earlier or things he has previously asserted. Whom to believe — Obama 1.0, Obama 2.0, or Obama 3.0?

Iran insists on 'absolute right' to enrich uranium
[Al Ahram] Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif insisted on Monday that his country has the "absolute right" to enrich uranium on its soil, ISNA news agency reported.

"The mastery of civil nuclear technology, including the enrichment of uranium, on Iranian soil is the absolute right of Iran," Zarif said at a meeting in Tehran with the visiting Swiss deputy foreign minister, Yves Rossier.

"The events of recent years have shown that the approach of threats and sanctions have not ensured the interests and objectives of the other party, and the continuation of this approach is the repetition of past mistakes which cannot prevent Iran from mastering civilian nuclear technology," he added.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Oktoberfest Revellers Guzzle two Olympic Pools of Beer
[An Nahar] Germany wrapped up its world-famous Oktoberfest beer festival Sunday, reporting that 6.4 million visitors drank 6.7 million liter-sized Mass glasses -- more than twice the volume of an Olympic swimming pool -- of the amber nectar over 16 days.
Ah, beer and debauchery. Fond memories.
The 180th edition of the Munich celebration of beer, lederhosen, dirndl dresses and oompah music was "extremely relaxed, folk festival fun for every taste", said its organizer Dieter Reiter.
"Yersh! Very relakshed! More, beer, bitte!"
In festival kitchens, 114 oxen and 58 calves fell victim to the appetite of revelers who also washed down with frothy beer other traditional foods like giant pretzels, pork and dumplings.
I like French cooking, but when you eat in Germany you know you've eaten.
The number of visitors who needed medical attention during the gigantic beer fest fell 20 percent to 7,551, said the Red Cross, including 638 cases of alcohol poisoning and many people who suffered cuts from broken glass.
I'm not going to describe what the next morning feels like after falling down a flight of stone stairs headfirst and backwards. I'm trying not to remember.
Police said they were called out 2,031 times, exactly the same number as the previous year, including for 58 beer-fueled brawls, almost 450 cases of assault and over 500 cases of pickpocketing.

Egypt judicial advisory body recommends dissolution of Brotherhood's FJP
[Al Ahram] Egypt's State Commissioners Authority, a body that advises the government on legal issues, recommended on Monday the dissolution of the Freedom and Justice party (FJP) - the political wing of the Moslem Brüderbund.

The authority's report said that the prior decision, issued in June 2011 by the Political Parties Affair Committee, to accepted a request from the FJP's chairman Saad El-Katatni to form the party, is invalid.

Hence the implications of such a decision are also invalid, added the report.

The Authority's recommendations to the government are non-binding.

On 23 September the Cairo court for urgent matters ordered the banning of the Moslem Brüderbund's activities.

The court also ordered the interim government to seize the group's funds and establish a panel to administer its frozen assets until any appeal had been heard.

On Monday, the Moslem Brüderbund appealed the court verdict ordering the seizing of the group's funds.

The Brotherhood has existed outside of Egyptian law for decades and was only officially registered as an NGO in March 2013.

Moral case for DNA testing
[Dawn] IMAGINE: you've just been mugged on a quiet street on a desolate afternoon in your neighbourhood by four men who stole your money and then stabbed or shot you for good measure.

You're admitted to hospital, where doctors operate on your wounds. But when it comes time to having the robbers placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
and sent to court, the police refuse to register the crime, while the judge won't believe that anything happened to you because nobody witnessed the crime. Your scars are worth nothing in court, your doctors' evidence that you were grievously maimed counts for nothing either. Because of a lack of witnesses, your robbers, who you have easily been able to identify, go free.

US blacklists Egypt terror commander
[Al Ahram] The United States on Monday blacklisted as a terrorist an Egyptian Islamist military commander with links to Al-Qaeda, accusing him of setting up training camps in Egypt and Libya.

The State Department also designated as global forces of Evil the group founded by Muhammad Jamal, who had learned bomb-making techniques when he trained with Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan in the 1980s

Jamal had returned from Afghanistan to Egypt in the 1990s and became the military head of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
, which was then led by Ayman Al-Zawahri, now the global head of Al-Qaeda following the killing of the late Osama bin Laden
... who is no longer with us, and won't be again...

Jamal was tossed in the slammer
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
several times by Egyptian authorities, but on his release in 2011 he founded the Muhammad Jamal Network "and established several terrorist training camps in Egypt and Libya," the State Department said in a statement.

He has also developed links with the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula and used their network "to smuggle fighters into training camps."

"Suicide bombers have trained at MJN training camps, and Jamal established links with forces of Evil in Europe," the State Department said.

After he was re-arrested in Egypt in November 2012, "his confiscated computer contained letters to Zawahri in which Jamal asked for assistance and described MJN's activities, including acquiring weapons, conducting terrorist training, and establishing terrorist groups in the Sinai."

Target of U.S. raid in Somalia planned Kenya attacks
[Shabelle] A United States official says the target of raid by Navy SEALs in Somalia over the weekend was a Kenyan man named Abdulkadir Mohammed Abdulkadir. A Kenyan government intelligence document names him as the coordinator of other planned attacks.

The man, also known as Ikrima, was a known operator for the Somali krazed killer group al-Shabaab

The document says that foiled plots by Abdulkadir included plans to target Kenya's parliament building and the United Nations

office in Nairobi, as well as an Æthiopian restaurant patronized by Somali government officials.

It does not appear that Saturday's raid resulted in the killing or capture of Abdulkadir. The U.S. official who confirmed the target of the SEAL raid insisted on anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the matter.

#3  48 hours pre-mission is not bad if there are indications the target was a random discovery, or the window of opportunity was short.

The problem is that it's Somalia, where there was a good chance the terrs could be tipped off by some in the Somali govt and, more importantly, every Somali civilian is a lookout.

And yes - the new Counterr Guidelines are a problem. With any luck there won't be anyone killed because them. Between that and the loose lips, this administration isn't doing JSOC any favors.

Egypt prosecutor general initiates investigation into violence of past 2 days
[Al Ahram] Egypt's Prosecutor General Hesham Barakat ordered on Monday comprehensive investigations into the violence that erupted in Cairo and outside the capital on Sunday. Barakat also ordered investigations into Monday's attacks in Cairo, Ismailia, and southern Sinai.

General prosecution front man Ahmed El-Rakib said the prosecution received notification of "terrorist, violent, murderous, and thuggish acts" taking place on Sunday in Cairo during marches in support of ousted president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
El-Rakib said Sherlocks have visited the scene of the crimes and examined the bodies of those killed during Sunday's confrontations.

Deadly festivities erupted in Cairo on Sunday as pro-Morsi marches protesting the military headed to Tahrir Square, where thousands were celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1973 war with Israel. Confrontations also occurred outside the capital, with the corpse count rising to 53 by Sunday night.

On Monday morning, six Egyptian army personnel -- one officer and five soldiers -- were killed in an attack by gunnies on an army patrol near the Suez Canal city of Ismailia, security officials said.

Shortly afterwards in the southern Sinai town of Al-Tor, two were killed and 48 injured in a massive boom-mobile kaboom targeting security headquarters.

Meanwhile in southern Cairo's upscale district of Maadi, armed assailants attacked with RPGs an uplink telecom facility used to air channels on Egypt's Nilesat satellite, reported pan-Arab news channel Sky News Arabia.

Palestinian leader condemns attack on Israeli girl
[Al Ahram] Paleostinian president the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
on Monday condemned an attack on a nine-year-old Israeli girl the day before in the West Bank.

"We oppose on principle aggression against anyone, and the spilling of blood," he told a group of Israeli MPs visiting his headquarters in Ramallah.

The girl, Noam Glick, was variously described as having been shot or stabbed in a Sunday attack in her garden in the Psagot settlement near Ramallah.

Police said it was probably a "terrorist" attack.

Medics at the Jerusalem hospital where she was treated said her condition was improving.

Abbas spoke as Israeli forces closed in on an area in the West Bank town of Al-Bira, near Ramallah, in an arrest operation linked to the Psagot attack, an AFP correspondent said.

Abbas objected to the unilateral Israeli operation, insisting the Paleostinian Authority should take responsibility for finding the culprits.

"The Israeli army's incursions are unjustified. There's security coordination with us, so why carry out these raids that harm (our efforts)?" Abbas said.

"Seven years ago we (the Paleostinian Authority) began security cooperation (with Israel)," he said, describing coordination on security as functioning at "100 percent."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had condemned the "hateful attack" in Psagot and said he held the Paleostinian leadership responsible even though the attack took place in an area of the occupied West Bank under full Israeli control.

"As long as the incitement continues in the Paleostinian official media, the Paleostinian Authority cannot absolve itself of responsibility for events of this sort," he said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday.

Islamists visit Constitution Party's Dawoud after brutal attack
[Al Ahram] Constitution Party spokesman Khaled Dawoud says he was visited by Islamist figures after being subject to a brutal knife attack on Friday.
Bet that cheered him right up.
Dawoud, a former spokesman for the anti-Morsi National Salvation Front (NSF), was stabbed in his chest and sustained a severe wound to his hand on Friday in central Cairo after being attacked by protesters supporting deposed president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
, who hails from the Moslem Brüderbund.

Without identifying the specific visitors, Dawoud said that four representatives from the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya's Building and Development Party, and the Salafist Call visited him to express sorrow over the incident.

The quartet, who are members of the pro-Morsi National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, told him that the assailants do not represent Islam or Muslims.

"The visit won't make me withdraw the report I filed [to the police]," he said in a phone interview with told Reuters' Aswat Masriya. "If someone assaulted me with a penknife he must be brought to justice."

Dawoud also reiterated that the assaulters called him an "apostate," and added that one tried to cut off his hand with a paper cutter. He was pulled out of his car and beaten before being stabbed twice in the chest.

Right after the incident, the FJP condemned the attack in a media statement.

Morsi supporters held protests in Cairo on Friday, but failed to reach key locations such as Tahrir Square and the presidential palace amidst stiff opposition from security forces and local residents.

One protester was killed in clashes between Morsi supporters and local residents in central Cairo's Manial. Other confrontations erupted later between supporters and opponents of Morsi in Ibn Sandr Square in the western Cairo suburb of Zeitoun, leaving three more dead.

Dawoud, a staunch opponent of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, resigned from the NSF in mid-August to protest the Front's support for the forcible dispersal of two large protest camps established by Morsi supporters.

The dispersal, led by security forces, left hundreds of protesters dead.

[Al Ahram] Most of those killed during Sunday's festivities in Cairo and other governorates where shot by live ammunition, said Hisham Abdel-Hamid, front man for the Forensic Medicine Department.

[Al Ahram] A court incarcerated

nine Bahrainis for life on Monday for forming a krazed killer group, manufacturing explosives and plotting attacks aimed at destabilising the kingdom, state news agency BNA reported.

The trial was the latest in a series involving alleged anti-government activists in the Gulf Arab state, still beset by political tensions more than two years after security forces quelled pro-democracy protests led by Shia Mohammedans.

BNA said the convicted men had turned a Manama warehouse into a bomb factory, where they had prepared explosives to attack security forces, civilians and private and public property "with the aim of undermining the stability of the country and harming its economic foundations".

Long Island Middle School Bans Footballs, Other Recreational Items
[NEWYORK.CBSLOCAL] Worries about injuries at a Long Island school have led to a surprising ban. As CBS 2's Jennifer McLogan reported Monday, officials at Weber Middle School in Port Washington are worried that students are getting hurt during recess. Thus, they have instituted a ban on footballs, baseballs, lacrosse balls, or anything that might hurt someone on school grounds.
Did you just hear Jack London turn over in his grave?
Tossing a football during recess has long seemed to be a rite of passage for kids in the school community. "I think we need the soccer balls, the footballs and everything, so we can have some fun," one student said.
The ghost of Jim Bridger just snorted and stalked off to shoot the ghost of something on the endangered species list.
But the students will have no such option anymore. They were just informed that during recess, football is out and Nerf ball is in. Hard soccer balls have been banned, along with baseballs and lacrosse balls, rough games of tag, or cartwheels unless supervised by a coach.
I can remember Bonnie Funk turning cartwheels on the asphalt playground at our elementary school. We were in first grade. Girls did stuff like that in 1953. That was before they became empowered.
Students were not thrilled about the news.
No!... Re-e-e-e-eally?
"Cartwheels and tag -- I think it's ridiculous they are banning that," one said.
Entirely too physical. Better to organize the students to write letters to their congresscritters supporting Nobamacare.
"You go for recess -- that's your free time to go let loose and recharge," another said.
Back in my day, we had our fist fights outside, in the play yard, not in the classroom.
"That's all we want to do," a third student said. "We're in school all day sitting behind the desk learning."
"And not even much of that!"
But Port Washington schools Supt. Kathleen Maloney said the change in policy is warranted due to a rash of playground injuries.
"Injuries, by Gawd! Blood! We've been applying bandaids like they're going out of style!"
"Some of these injuries can unintentionally become very serious, so we want to make sure our children have fun, but are also protected," Maloney said.
Wusses. I didn't even know knees were supposed to have skin on them until I hit puberty.

#8  The problem for the Chinese is that they read the American MSM not understanding like its former Soviet brethren Isvestia and Pravda, you have to read between the lies line to find out what is really happening. Let'm panic.

If the debt ceiling is not raised debts will be serviced. It's all other spending that will get cut. In other words, the budget becomes a budget again and not a magical money tree for pols to buy votes with even more funny money. Per Powerline -

But there is no threat of default. Constitutionally, the federal government must pay its debts. The Fourteenth Amendment, Section 4, states:

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.

I believe this provision is universally understood to mean that the federal government must pay its debt obligations, both principal and interest, even if that means prioritizing debt service over other government spending. So the question is, if Congress does not raise the current debt ceiling, will the federal government run out of money needed to pay its existing debts? The answer is clearly No. A reader supplies the math:

On average the federal government’s daily expenditures are about $16.7 billion; receipts are about $14 billion, implying an average daily borrowing requirement of about $2.7 billion. So the planned flow of revenues is now about $650 billion less than the planned flow of expenses…about $2.7 billion a [business] day, $650 billion annually.

So the “default” scenarios are bogus. Interest on the $16 trillion in debt is covered by a factor of about 10x by revenues! That puts the federal government deep into AAA land. Revenues would have to fall by a staggering 90% to jeopardize interest payments.

And, of course, retiring principal by “rolling over” maturing debt can never require an increase in the debt ceiling, since there is no net increase in the nation’s debt, even if the money used to repay the original principal is borrowed.

So what will actually happen if Congress doesn’t increase the debt ceiling by approximately October 17? The government’s debt obligations will be paid, but reductions in other spending will start to become necessary. In effect, leaving the debt ceiling as is would function as a spending cut. This is why the Democrats hate the idea so much. They know there is zero chance of default, but they are horrified at the prospect that voters and taxpayers may find out that there is a relatively simple way to bring about spending reductions that would create, in effect, a balanced budget. Hence the hysteria.

Thus, the Balance Budget. The Tea Partiers/Porkbusters will achieve one of their major objectives. Why should they negotiate when they get what they want by default.

Foreign fighter, top militants fought off US forces: Shebab
[Al Ahram] A foreign fighter and two top Somali Death Eaters were present in a house that was attacked over the weekend by US special forces, a Shabaab commander told AFP Monday.

Moalim Abdirahman Abu-Isa, a commander for the Al Qaeda-linked Islamist group in the southern port town of Barawe, said one Shabaab krazed killer was killed but that several US Navy SEALS were believed to have been maimed.

"Three mujahedeen fighters, one of them a non-Somali brother, stayed in the house when it was attacked but they have shown incredible bravery and resisted the enemy," Abu-Isa said.

"They have shot several of the enemy and one of the mujahedeen fighters was blessed with martyrdom," he added, without giving further details of the krazed killers' identities.

A witness in the area reported seeing a light skinned fighter with a flowing beard later leave the house protected by gunnies, while the dead body of the Shabaab who had been killed was carried away.

According to a US official in Washington, the SEALs were hunting Abdulkadir Mohammed Abdulkadir, a Kenyan of Somali origin who also goes by the alias Ikrima.

The Kenyan is linked with two Al-Qaeda operatives, now dead, who played roles in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the official said.

The strike in Somalia follows last month's attack -- claimed by the Shabaab -- against an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, in which 67 people were killed.

But Shabaab front man Abdulaziz Abu Musab tried to downplay the report, saying the man Washington was hunting does not exist.

"That is a false name, they are looking for someone that is not real," he told AFP.

"There were no imported muscle or commanders in Barawe when they attacked... only a unit of coastiess, and they bravely fought off the attack."

Musab had also earlier claimed British and Turkish forces had carried out the raid, before Washington said its forces were responsible.

Barawe lies some 180 kilometres (110 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu, and is one of the few ports left in Shabaab hands, although they still control large parts of rural southern Somalia.

Argentine President to Undergo Surgery for Brain Bleed
[An Nahar] Argentine President Cristina Kirchner is to undergo surgery Tuesday for complications related to a head injury, amid uncertainty over who is in charge while she recuperates.

Kirchner, 60, was greeted with encouraging words from supporters Monday, television footage showed, as she entered a Buenos Aires medical center for further testing.

She was hospitalized overnight to await surgery, the Fundacion Favaloro hospital announced in a statement.

The president had suffered a blow to the head on August 12, but it wasn't until Saturday that doctors detected a "chronic subdural hematoma" -- a type of brain bleed -- and ordered her to take a month's rest.

Further symptoms, including a "transitory and slight" loss of muscular strength in her left arm on Sunday, prompted doctors to order surgery to drain the blood.

Vice President Amado Boudou pledged to keep the government running, though he has not officially assumed the presidency.

"As the president asked us, we are going to maintain the administration," Boudou said earlier Monday as he took her place at a ceremony at the Casa Rosada, Argentina's presidential palace.

Egypt: Huge Explosion Hits Security HQ In Sinai
[Ynet] Egyptian officials say a massive kaboom, possibly from a boom-mobile, has hit the security headquarters in a southern Sinai town, killing two people and wounding 48.

The security officials say the attack Monday in the town of al-Tour significantly damaged the four-story building and set off small fires. They say the corpse count was likely to rise as rescue workers and residents search for victims under the rubble. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Park Service OKs immigration reform rally on 'closed' National Mall
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] A planned immigration reform rally will take place on the National Mall on Tuesday even though the site is closed due to the government shutdown.

Organizers for the "Camino Americano: March for Immigration Reform" were spotted Monday setting up a stage and equipment on the National Mall for the rally which will take place on Tuesday.

A few scattered barriers around the park have signs informing visitors that the area is closed as a result of the government shutdown.

Susana Flores, a spokesperson for the rally, confirmed for the Washington Examiner that the Park Service will allow the event to take place under the group's rights granted by the First Amendment.

#11  Mt. Rushmore has a different set of problems now:
"The cones first went up Oct. 1, said Dusty Johnson, Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s chief of staff. The state asked that they be taken down, and federal officials did so with some of them. The state was told the cones were a safety precaution to help channel cars into viewing areas rather than to bar their entrance.

“I think reasonable people can disagree about that,” Johnson said.

The cones were down again Friday as a blizzard hit the Black Hills and plows needed access to the roads, Johnson said. He said the state would be monitoring to see whether the cones are put back along viewing areas."

The Black Hills area is still paralyzed by the recent winter storm, so the issue is rather academic.

Belmokhtar defection weakens al-Qaeda
[MAGHAREBIA] Mokhtar Belmokhtar's split from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) raises questions about the overall strength of the parent organization, analysts say.

In late August, al-Qaeda splinter group Katibat El Moulethemoune ("Brigade of the Veiled Ones") led by Belmokhtar (real name Khaled Abou El Abass) joined forces with the Movement for Tawhid and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) to create the "Mourabitounes".

To local experts, the move looks like the only option left for jihadists ostracised by al-Qaeda's Maghreb leadership. The former AQIM commander had already been cut off by the organization.

Saqr Orders Detention of Seven over Roumieh 'Explosive Sandwich'
[An Nahar] State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr on Monday ordered the detention of seven people in connection with a recent attempt to smuggle a sandwich containing an kaboom into the Roumieh prison, state-run National News Agency reported.

The suspects are six inmates and the security guard who tried to smuggle the sandwich, NNA said.

The Internal Security Forces' Intelligence Bureau had questioned the seven and held a joint interrogation involving Charbel Shalita and the other five inmates, "but they denied all the charges," the agency added.

The Intelligence Bureau will refer the dossier to Saqr on Tuesday for further proceedings.

The Bureau interrogated on Saturday two Islamist inmates over the smuggling of explosives into Roumieh's bloc B facility.

On Thursday, the ISF thwarted an attempt by a prison guard to smuggle 150 grams of an kaboom inside a sandwich that was being delivered to the inmate Charbel Shalita, the murderer of Roland Chbeir.

Somalia Seeks to Restart Oil Exploration
[Shabelle] Somalia's central government is in talks with some of the world's biggest energy companies in an attempt to restart oil exploration in the war-torn country, an adviser to the government said Monday.

Somali officials have discussed having Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil Corp., BP, ConocoPhillips, Eni SpA and Chevron Corp. return to the East African nation after more than two decades of violence drove major oil producers off, Abdullah Haider, an adviser in Somalia's ministry of natural resources, told a conference here Monday.

"Most of the discussions are going well," he said.

A number of big oil companies signed concessions in Somalia before the country descended into civil war in 1991. The instability prompted the companies to suspend onshore and offshore exploration; they say their contracts remain valid since it has been impossible to conduct activity in the country.

Maldives Supreme Court Annuls Presidential Vote
[An Nahar] The Maldives Supreme Court Monday annulled the results of last month's presidential elections, in a move likely to deepen international concern amid high tensions on the troubled Indian Ocean archipelago.

The court annulled the first round of voting, which was held on September 7 and won by former leader Mohammed Nasheed, and ordered a fresh ballot.

"The court in a majority decision of 4-3 annulled the elections and ordered fresh elections on October 20," a court official told news hounds after the long-awaited judgement.

The court ordered that a run-off election should be held before November 4 so that the new leader could take office by the constitutionally mandated November 11 deadline, the official said.

The vote was seen as a key test a year and a half after the violent ousting of Nasheed, the Maldives' first democratically elected president, who came to power in 2008.

Local and international observer groups found the first round of voting to be free and fair.

But the court suspended the run-off election while it heard a petition into allegations of electoral fraud made by a defeated candidate, businessman Qasim Ibrahim, who demanded that the results be annulled.

Nasheed of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had won the first round with 45.45 percent of the vote, but not the minimum required 50 percent to win outright.

His Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been critical of the court and there had been occasionally violent protest since the run-off was suspended on September 23, but there was no immediate sign of fresh protests after Monday's decision.

There had been growing international concern over the hold up of the run-off elections with the U.N. leading calls for an early resolution of the political deadlock.

Hours before Monday's ruling, six masked men set fire to a private television network that supports Nasheed's campaign.

Jumblat Warns 'Our Oil Is at Risk'
[An Nahar] Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Wally Jumblat
... Druze politician, head of the Progressive Socialist Party, who's been on every side in Leb at least four times. He'll sell you his friends for a dollar, but family comes higher because of shipping and handling...
announced that the Lebanese oil is "at risk" because of the stalling in completing the necessary procedures.

"I was never against holding a cabinet session on the issue of oil and now after this delay I support holding a session," Jumblat said in a telephone call with al-Manar television.

"We were overran by everyone else and our oil is at risk."

Al-Manar revealed that caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati is communicating with caretaker Health Minister Ali Hassan Khali and caretaker Social Affairs Minister Wael Abou Faour to reach an accord on a cabinet session on petroleum.

"Miqati also received a phone call from the political aide of the Hizbullah chief Hussein Khalil to express the party's support of a session on oil," the same sourced added.

Caretaker Energy Minister Jebran Bassil urged President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
and Miqati to hold an extraordinary governmental session to issue two decrees that call for demarcating 10 maritime oil exploration blocs and setting up a revenue-sharing model.

Bassil explained that his step aims at "preserving the oil and protecting it against any local obstruction and any foreign exploitation."

"Especially against any Israeli exploitation."

Regarding the maritime oil blocs, Jumblat considered that the petroleum authority is the party concerned in resolving this matter.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth ordered the entire 614th quadrant searched. The Green Lensman must be found!...
Khalil stressed during a visit to Miqati on the importance of contracting out the maritime oil blocks.

"This is a point of disagreement with Bassil," Khalil pointed out. "But discussion over this issue was not and will not be interrupted."

... At 0145, the second platoon of F Company, 505th, had the bad luck of jumping right over the town (St Mere Eglise, France), where the German garrison was fully alerted.

Ken Russell was in that stick. "Coming down," he recalled, "I looked to my right and I saw this guy, and instantaneously he was blown away. There was just an empty parachute comeing down." Evidently a shell had hit his Gammoon Grenades.

Horrified, Russell looked to his left. he saw another member of his stick, Pvt. Charles Blankenship, being drawn into the fire (the fire was sucking in oxygen and drqwing the parachutitst toward it). "I heard him scream once, then again before he hit the fire, and he didn't scream anymore."

The Germans filled the sky with tracers. Russel was trying "to hide behind my reserve chute because we were all sitting ducks." He got hit in the hand. He saw Lt. Harld Cadish and Pvts. H. T. Bryant and Ladislaw Tlapa land on telephone poles around the church square. Ther Germans shot them before they could cut themselves loose. "It was like they were crucified there."

Pvt Penrose Shearer landed in a tree opposite the church and was killed while hanging there. Pvt. John Blanchard, also up in a tree, managed to get his trench knife out and cut his risers. In the process he cut one of his fingers off" and didn't even know it until later."

Russell jerked on his risers to avoid he fire and came downn on the slate roof of the church. "I hit and a couple of my suspension line went around the church steeple and I slid off the roof." He was hanging off the edge, "And Steele, [Pvt.] John Steele, whom you've head a lot about [in the book and movie The Longest Day], he came down and his chute covered the steeple." Steele was hit in the foot.

Sgt. John Ray landed in the church square, just past Russell and Steele. A German soldier came around the corner. "I'll never forget him," Russell related. "He was red-haired, and as he came around he shot Sergeant Ray in the stomach." Then he turned toward Russell and Steele and brought his machhine pistol up to shoot them. "And Sergeant Ray, while he was dying in agony, he got his .45 out and he shot the German soldier in the back of the head and killed him."

The through all this the church bell was constantly ringing.

Tunisia political gridlock ends
[MAGHAREBIA] Tunisia's ruling party and opposition groups on Saturday (October 5th) signed a roadmap agreement aimed at ending the months-long political crisis.

The deal calls for the nomination of an independent prime minister by the end of next week, who would then have two weeks to form a cabinet.

It also envisages the adoption of a constitution and a timetable for elections within the next four weeks.

Ennahda said the arrangement was a "modified" version of the initial proposal made by the labour union-led mediators.

The roadmap gives the new government full authority to run the country and not be subject to a motion of censure unless signed by half of the members of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC).

A no-confidence vote will require the consent of at least two-thirds of its members, according to the same agreement.

The ANC will have to select members of the Independent High Commission for Elections and set it up within one week of the start of direct negotiations between the opposition and the ruling coalition.

The constituent assembly is also in charge of preparing the electoral law and adopting it within two weeks.

President Marzouki cautioned that dialogue failure would expose the country to major risks and cripple the economy. He also warned of the terrorist threat that could target the sessions of the dialogue, even though the risk remained under control at the moment.

"Some plot to sow violence and chaos, ostensibly on behalf of deviant beliefs, but in reality to achieve hidden agendas," he said.

Sami Tahri, front man for the UGTT, said there was no option for Tunisians and political opponents "but dialogue to spare the country from spiralling towards the unknown and foreign intervention".

Mustapha Ben Jaafar, president of the ANC, echoed Tahri's view, noting, "Dialogue is not an option that one can accept or refuse but a crucial necessity and a key requirement that everyone must participate in and be accountable for."

Iran Minister Rejects Plan to Unblock Social Media
[An Nahar] Iranian Telecommunications Minister Mahmoud Vaezi rejected on Monday any official plans to legalize Facebook and Twitter, although President Hassan Rouhani pledged to reduce online censorship, ISNA news agency reported.

"The ban on networks such as Facebook and Twitter was not supposed to be lifted," said Vaezi.

Tehran blocks access to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and numerous other sites, including blogs and pornography hubs, as it tries to stop Iranians from surfing content authorities seen as undermining the Islamic regime, or as being immoral.

The authorities provide some private or sate-owned companies a "national VPN" which allow them to access to the global Internet.

Despite being banned, Facebook and Twitter accounts are affiliated to some Iranians officials.

When asked about these officials, Vaezi simply replied: "You should ask them".

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is believed to have a Facebook page.

There is also a Twitter account in the name of Rouhani, although one of his advisers have said it was not a personal account.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has accounts on both Facebook and Twitter.

He regularly updates his Facebook page, where he posts in Farsi and sometimes interacts with some of his more than 400,000 fans, and he posts in English on Twitter.

In early October, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey asked Rouhani: "Are citizens of Iran able to read your tweets?"

Rouhani's account answered that the president would do his best to ensure that the people of Iran will "comfortably" be able to "access all info globally as is their right".

In an interview with CNN aired on September 25, Rouhani said he planned to reduce restrictions so that "within (certain) sort of moral frameworks that we have for ourselves... we are able to access these social network sites".

On September 17, the two networks became briefly accessible, but later Iranian officials explained this had been due to "technical glitch".

Heroin seized by Canadian warship linked to terrorist groups: commander
A commander on board a Canadian warship that seized more than 180 kilograms of heroin says the drug came from suppliers in the Middle East and is linked to terrorist groups.

HMCS Toronto Cmdr. Matthew Bowen said the drugs were destined for recipients in Africa, and would have funded "extremist elements."
He said the drugs likely have ties to terrorist organizations with connections to Afghanistan.

"We have information that leads us to believe (the heroin) is definitely linked to terrorist organizations," Bowen told CTV News on Sunday.

The massive drug bust took place approximately 800 kilometres east of the Horn of Africa. Crew members of the HMCS Toronto boarded a suspected smuggling ship and seized 154 bags of heroin.

The drugs have since been destroyed.

Bowen said the operation went "smoothly."

"Once (the smuggling ships) are confronted with a very large helicopter, a significant and well-armed boarding party that clearly knows their tactics, knows how to look after security with again, a very large warship in the background, they don't tend to give us any trouble."

The 258-crew frigate, which was on patrol in the Arabian Sea, is part of a multinational counter-terrorism effort.

Bowen said his crew has achieved its goal and they will not be pursuing the "middle men" involved in the drug operation.

Pakistani Taliban vow to attack Malala again
[Al Ahram] The Pak Taliban on Monday said schoolgirl campaigner Malala Yousafzai had "no courage" and vowed to attack her again if they got the chance.

Gunmen sent by the Taliban tried to kill Malala on her school bus on 9 October last year.

She amazingly survived being shot in the head and has become a global ambassador for the right of all children -- girls as well as boys -- to go to school.

Having spread a message of "education for all" across the globe, the 16-year-old is now among the favourites for the Nobel Peace Prize, which will be awarded on Friday.

But Shahidullah Shahid, front man for the main Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) umbrella group, slammed Malala and said they would try again to kill her.

"She is not a brave girl and has no courage. We will target her again and attack whenever we have a chance," Shahid told AFP.

In an interview with the BBC, Malala dismissed the threats against her life and repeated her desire to return to Pakistain from Britannia, where she was flown for treatment after the attack and where she now goes to school.

She first rose to prominence during the Taliban's 2007-09 rule in Pakistain's northwestern Swat

valley with a blog for the BBC Urdu service chronicling the rigours of daily life under the Islamists.

"She even used a fake name of Gul Makai to write a diary. We attacked Malala because she was used to speak against Taliban and Islam and not because she was going to school," Shahid said.

While she has been feted by celebrities and world leaders across the West, in deeply conservative Swat Malala's achievements are eyed with suspicion by some.

The thought police: Internet surveillance
[Dawn] BY its very nature, democracy carries within it a promise of openness, a celebration of diversity. But democratic Pakistain, on the contrary, is becoming more Orwellian by the day. A report on internet surveillance called Freedom on the Net 2013, conducted by the Digital Rights Foundation Pakistain and Freedom House, assessed cyberspace freedom in 60 countries. Scoring 67 out of 100, Pakistain received a status of 'not free', while Iceland topped the table with a score of six.

The violation of the right to information by limiting content has been under way for some time with scores of websites seen as anti-military, anti-state or anti-Islam getting blocked. There has also been, it seems, an expansion in surveillance activities by government authorities, particularly intelligence agencies. However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
the uploading of the anti-Islam movie trailer on YouTube last year and the Fair Trial Act passed earlier this year to aid terrorism investigations seem to have engendered a perfect storm of censorship and moral policing by government authorities. Not only has the ban on YouTube not been lifted, and more sites been blocked on grounds of 'immorality', PTA is in the process of acquiring more advanced surveillance software than it possesses at present that will make it possible, among other things, to track internet traffic on websites of interest, and trawl through personal chats and email accounts more thoroughly. Although this invasive category of software is ostensibly for the purpose of aiding terrorism investigations, the loose phrasing of the Fair Trial Act 2012 could allow a much broader application of this technology to curb views on politics, religion, morality, etc that may be deemed unacceptable. The right to freedom of speech is already much circumscribed in Pakistain through a combination of society's vigilantism and draconian laws such as those dealing with blasphemy. Given the myriad problems that we are beset with, many of which can be traced to intolerance and bigotry, the last thing the government should be doing is playing Big Brother.

Dir family seeks protection from ex-minister
[Dawn] A local family held a protest demonstration outside Timergara Press Club here the other day against the police for not taking action against former provincial minister Nawabzada Mahmood Zeb for subjecting them to torture over a piece of land.

The members of Khalilullah's family, including elders and children, rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against the former minister. They also carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the police and the former minister.

Talking to journalists, Khalilullah and his son Hussainullah alleged that workers of the former minister and local police subjected both of them to torture when they were working on a piece of land. "They tore our clothes, tortured us physically and took away our farming tools," said Mr Khalilullah.

Morocco Frees Teens Held for Facebook Kissing Photos
[An Nahar] Three Moroccan teenagers incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
for posting photos of themselves kissing on Facebook were released to their parents on Monday ahead of their trial for breaching public decency, judicial sources said.

The young couple and a male friend who took the photos had been held in a juvenile detention center in the northern city of Nador since Thursday, as their arrest sparked outrage on social media.

After the detainees formally asked to be released, the judge on Monday agreed to their request and ordered that they be delivered to their parents, the public prosecutor said.

The teenagers, aged between 14 and 15, were arrested after a Moroccan NGO filed a lawsuit at the end of September which charged that the photos "deeply affect Moroccan education and culture, and upset people's feelings."

The teens' lawyer, Moneim Fettahi, told Agence La Belle France Presse they were due to stand trial on Friday for public indecency.

The photographs were taken outside the high school in Nador where the three accused are students.

Young people have posted similar photos on social media and called on Facebook for a "giant kiss-in" on Wednesday in the coastal town of Mohammedia.

"Let's mobilize against the arrest of these two teenagers ... and fight against this backward, medieval mentality," said the organizers of the event.

A similar group smooch, dubbed "free kiss," is planned in Rabat on Saturday outside parliament.

Morocco has a reputation for religious tolerance and personal freedoms, particularly when compared to other Moslem countries, but it remains a deeply religious society.

Under article 483 of the kingdom's penal code, anyone found guilty of violating public decency risks up to two years in prison.
