Arabia
Ballistic missile intercepted over Saudi Arabia capital Riyadh just seconds before it slammed into royal palace
Pics at link.
Saudi air defences intercepted a ballistic missile fired towards the city, Saudi-owned channel al-Arabiya reported in a news flash quoting a Saudi-led military coalition official.

A ballistic missile was launched at the Saudi capital, a Houthi spokesman said.

Mohammed Abdussalam said on Twitter that a Volcano 2-H ballistic missile was fired towards al-Yamama royal palace.

Bloomberg reporter Vivian Nereim tweeted: "Loud boom heard in central Riyadh - big enough that we felt it shake our tower."

The Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information tweeted: "Coalition forces confirm intercepting an Iranian-Houthi missile targeting south of Riyadh.

"There are no reported casualties at this time.

The Saudi Arabian military shot down a missile fired at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

Amateur video taken at the scene showed four anti-ballistic missiles being fired into the sky followed by loud explosions.

The November 4 attack triggered the tightening of a longstanding Saudi-led blockade of Yemen - already on the verge of famine.

Saudi Arabia angrily accused its arch foe Iran of supplying the missile to the rebels, a charge Tehran strongly denied.
They're making them in their basements!
On Thursday, US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley presented what she called "undeniable" evidence that last month's missile was "made in Iran".

But her comments went beyond the findings of a UN investigation which reached no firm conclusion on whether the missile came from an Iranian supplier, saying only that it had a "common origin" to some Iranian designs.
Close enough.
A brutal civil war has been raging in Yemen for over two years and the conflict has claimed over 16,000 lives.

A military alliance led by Saudi Arabia has launched thousands of air strikes against the Houthi movement, which now controls much of Yemen.

#1  ...Without taking anything away from the skill of the Saudi ADA crews or the sheer viciousness of the Houthis, the Volcano-2 (or V-2, if you will) is based on an Iranian SCUD descendant and has about a 500m (1640 ft) Circular Error Probable (CEP). That means you would have a circle 3280 feet - more than half a mile - centered on the aimpoint that the missile is expected to land in. Given that the V-2 is probably a product of inshallah design, storage, and maintenance, it was far more likely to hurt people way outside the palace than the ones in it.

Bomb squad raid five properties, arrest four men in operation against 'people plotting Islamist-related attacks'
[DailyMail]
  • Three men from Sheffield and one from Chesterfield have been arrested today

  • Trio aged 22, 36 and 41, were arrested at addresses in Sheffield this morning

  • 31-year-old arrested in Chesterfield, aslo on suspicion of plotting terror attacks

10:45 a.m. ET: The Telegraph weighs in:
Police raided four addresses in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire after intelligence suggested the men were planning to build or acquire a bomb to strike a target in the UK.

The suspected plotters are understood to have been under surveillance, but counter terrorism officers decided to act amid fears the suspects had moved beyond discussion and begun trying to source bomb parts, or materials.

A police spokesperson said: "The public may have heard a loud bang at the time as police entered one of the properties, but it was not an explosion. It was part of the method to gain entry to the property in Meersbrook."

Clapper finally jumps shark - POTUS now a Vlad Putin intelligence asset
[Free Beacon] Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper referred to President Donald Trump on Monday as an intelligence "asset" for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The term "asset" refers to people with countries or organizations being spied upon who serve as resources for outside spies.

Clapper appeared on CNN to discuss Trump's national security strategy speech given Monday, where he referred to Russia as a rival but also said he wanted to form a partnership.

The two leaders have also expressed recent gratitude to each other, with Putin calling and thanking Trump for sharing intelligence that helped foil a terror plot and Trump thanking Putin for his recent praise of the American economy.

"Is that a contradictory message?" CNN host Jim Sciutto asked Clapper.

"Well, it is to me," Clapper said. "I think this past weekend is illustrative of what a great case officer Vladimir Putin is. He knows how to handle an asset, and that's what he's doing with the president."

"You're saying that Russia is handling President Trump as an asset?" Sciutto asked.

"That's the appearance to me," Clapper said.

Former nurse Joy Milne can smell Parkinson's disease.
[Independent] Meet the woman who can smell Parkinson’s disease.

Joy Milne, a retired nurse, has an extraordinary sense of smell. However, it goes beyond simply having a very sensitive nose.

Milne has the ability to detect Parkinson’s disease years before a doctor’s diagnosis.

As described by Milne herself: "I’m in a tiny, tiny branch of the population somewhere between a dog and a human."

She first stumbled across her unusual gift when her husband Les started omitting a strange odour.

At first, Milne attributed the smell to bad hygiene on her husband’s part, but everything changed when the couple attended a Parkinson’s meeting.

She then realised that her husband smelt the same as the other people in the room. 10 years later, Les was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

"I smelled it 10 to 12 years before Les was diagnosed," Milne explains. "As the Parkinson’s got worse, the smell got worse.

"It became just part of him, but I with my sensitive sense of smell, I could smell it all the time and it became quite uncomfortable really, but I had the sense not to nag too much."

According to Milne, Parkinson’s disease has a very thick, musky smell.

Rush: Source Sez POTUS Telling People Mueller to Issue Letter Exonerating President of Wrongdoing
[Breitbart] Monday on his nationally syndicated radio show, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh told his listeners he received an email with a "rumor" saying President Donald Trump was forecasting a letter from special counsel Robert Mueller exonerating him of wrongdoing.

Mueller has been investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"I’ll tell you ‐ I just heard a rumor," Limbaugh said. "I just got an email with a rumor in it. The rumor is that Trump is telling people that Mueller is preparing a letter that exonerates Trump of any wrongdoing in all of this. It’s a rumor. I do not know if it’s true. I don’t know if Trump knows this. I don’t know if somebody told Trump this. I don’t know if it’s bogus. But the email that I got suggests Trump is telling people that he thinks ‐ he’s pretty sure Mueller is going to write a letter pretty soon to assure the American people that their president is not guilty of anything that he’s looking into ‐ that the country needs to know their president isn’t guilty.

Yeah. The attack on Midway

tl;dr: Station HYPO sent orders to Midway by cable to broadcast a radio message that the island's desalinization plant had broken down. The radio message was broadcast without encryption to ensure that Japan could read it if it was intercepted.

The radio message was duly intercepted by Japan and reported by a message encoded in JN25 stating that AF's desalinization plant was out of order. That message was intercepted by Station HYPO. AF was thus confirmed as Midway.

Today's Idiot
[MSN] A man cops are calling "Criminal Santa" had to call 911 when he reportedly found himself trapped in a California business's chimney this week.
Is there such a thing as a chimney that one can slide down and not get caught where it necks down into a damper or deposits the intruder in a locked incinerator or something like that? He's lucky someone didn't light a fire under his ever-so-deserving @$$.
Citrus Heights Police allege 32-year-old Jesse Berube was not trying to spread Christmas cheer when he allegedly crawled down the chimney Wednesday.

According to a police statement, Berube slid down the chimney in an attempt to gain entry into the business.

However, cops say Berube was unsuccessful and became lodged, and unable make his way back out. Fortunately for him, Berube was able to move just enough to call for help.

"Criminal Santa does not have the same skills as the real deal," police joked.

With the help of fire officials using special equipment, Berube was soon able to escape a sooty demise uninjured.

Berube was, however, arrested for burglary and has since been released.

Please set articles you post after 2:00 p.m. ET for publication the next day — use the Tomorrow button you’ll see to the left of the text box in lonely splendour — unless it is an on-going terror attack or the imminent arrival of a dinosaur-killer meteor. Because this was neither, I unpublished it to be held for today, where it will have the entire 24 hours to be enjoyed, and won’t be the last of 71 articles.

Very sincerely,

#3  I know a guy who was revamping an old industrial building as loft spaces. There was a twisty chimney "that had never worked right" so he had a mason cut into it to try make it functional.
There was a skeleton in a jumpsuit in it. It seems he was going down the flue and got caught in the turns and couldn't get out. The police said he'd been there since the 40's or '50's.

#4  Our cat did the same thing one subzero night after he refused to come inside, even though we called for him. Next morning his yowls for help echoed all over the house. Finally we zeroed in on the upstairs chimney damper. When we opened the damper, the cat fell out like Santa Claus.

Anbar Antix: 15 bridges down, two arms depots found

Two Islamic State arms depots found in Anbar province

Anbar (Iraqinews.com) Two Islamic State arms depots have been found in eastern Anbar, the military intelligence said on Monday.

“The two arms depots have been found at al-Subhayat and Nuaimiya areas east of Anbar, with 143 bombs available there,” the Iraqi Directorate of General Military Intelligence said in a statement, quoted by Alghad Press.

The explosive charges were meant to target Iraqi civilians and security men at Subhayat and Nuaimiya areas, the statement read.

Islamic State destroyed 15 bridges during capture of Anbar: Official

Anbar (Iraqinews.com) Islamic State militants have destroyed 15 bridges during their capture of Anbar province, a well-placed provincial official said.

“Islamic State militants have demolished eight bridges at Annah and Rawa towns (210 km west of Ramadi) and seven others at al-Qaam (350 km west of Ramadi),” Mahdi Abdul Farhan, the head of the Roads and Bridges Directorate of Anbar, said in press release, quoted by the National News Center on Monday.

The reconstruction of such “strategic and vital bridges” will cost 15 billion Iraqi dinars and will take a year to be finalized, Farhan added.

Before being driven out of Anbar, Islamic State militants destroyed many bridges linking the province’s towns with the aim of preventing Iraqi troops from advancing further into areas under their control.

Around seventy percent of western regions in Anbar province were destroyed due to terrorist crimes carried out by Islamic State as well as liberation offensives by the military, according to Fahd al-Rashed, a member of Anbar provincial council.

“The rate of destruction exceeds 70 percent in the liberated regions of Rawa and al-Qaam, with a high rate of destruction in Annah west of Anbar,” he told BasNews website earlier this month.

“Preliminary estimates showed the destruction of 26 schools, blasting most of the governmental authorities and booby-trapping of 17 service projects,” he said.

35,000 Iraqi security men killed in three-year war against Islamic State
Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) Over 35,000 Iraqi coppers were killed during the three-year war against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, an Iraqi military source said.

"The anti-IS war has left over 35,000 Iraqi coppers killed, and another 35,000 injured," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told al-Quds al-Arabi on Monday.

He added that the mentioned casualties included army and police personnel, al-Hashd al-Shaabi fighters and members of the Counter Terrorism Service.

"Thousands of Iraqi troops have sustained severe injures, and should travel abroad for surgeries but the government cannot do so due to the austerity policy it has recently adopted."

"The Iraqi government should pay due regard to the victims’ families and help the injured travel abroad to undergo surgeries as soon as possible," the source pointed out.

He highlighted that the Iraqi military has lost billions of dollars in the fight against IS krazed killers, who destroyed many of military equipment and warplanes in the country.

"The last war against Islamic State was one of the most devastating wars in Iraq’s history as it led to the weakening of Iraqi military and destruction of the country’s infrastructure," he stressed.

#4  The US Army has been using this approach for awhile. The CASH unit (Combat Army Surgical Hospital, which replaced the MASH's of Korea and Vietnam) are built around a modular container. each of which is basically an equipped ER or crash room. The pods are designed to hook together, usually in a four way cross, and seal up. The whole thing basically hooks together like building blocks.
The system mostly wasn't used in the late unpleasantness in the Middle East because buildings were already available (i.e. Ibn Sina in Baghdad and the facility at Bagram).

Austria's new government to impose ‘sanctions’ on immigrants who refuse to assimilate
[INDEPENDENT.CO.UK] Austria’s new government has unveiled plans for financial "sanctions" on immigrants colonists who keep their own culture and do not "integrate" with mainstream society.

The government, a coalition between the conservative People’s Party (OVP) and the far-right Freedom Party (FPO), agreed a deal at the weekend with provisions set to make life more difficult for foreigners in the country.

The two parties’ agreed policy programme says that immigrants colonists who are judged to be "refusing to integrate" should expect "sanctions".

One specific policy outlined in the agreement includes a cut to the basic level of support payments for asylum seekers. The reduction can be recouped by families by earning an "integration bonus" if they are deemed to be adopting Austrian culture, as defined by the government.

The programme also calls for faster deportations of asylum seekers and says undocumented immigration will be halted, as well as vowing to stop the creation of "parallel societies".

Federal appeals judge Alex Kozinski resigns after being accused of sexual misconduct
[THEHILL] Alex Kozinski, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, resigned Monday in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations, The Washington Post reported.

"I cannot be an effective judge and simultaneously fight this battle. Nor would such a battle be good for my beloved federal judiciary. And so I am making the decision to retire, effective immediately," Kozinski said in a statement to the Post.

The newspaper reported last week that several women accused Kozinski of making sexual comments, touching them inappropriately or kissing them without consent.

Beardless men might be mistaken for women, prompting 'indecent thoughts' -- Turkish cleric
[RT] In an effort to get Moslem men to grow out their facial hair, a Moslem preacher has claimed that clean-shaven men with long hair "cannot be distinguished from women," which can cause "indecent thoughts" to occur between males.

"Men should grow beards. One of the two body parts that separate men from women is the beard," Ottoman Turkish preacher Murat Bayaral told religious station Fatih Medreseleri TV on Saturday, as quoted by Hurriyet. He went on to describe a possible scenario in which a man could find himself having "indecent thoughts" about another man.

"For example, if you see a man with long hair from afar you may think he is a woman if he does not have a beard. Because nowadays women and men dress similarly. God forbid! You could be possessed by indecent thoughts," he said, apparently referring to same-sex relationships.

Swedish police retract safety advice to women despite 3rd gang rape in 1 month
[RT] Police in the Swedish city of Malmo have retracted advice given to women in the city following the brutal gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl. The force advised women not to go out alone after dark following the vicious attack.

Officers issued the warning over the weekend following the assault, which occurred on Saturday, and marked the third such vicious rape committed by unknown perpetrators in the city in less than a month.

The original warning, reported by various Swedish media outlets, said that women should avoid venturing out after dark without someone for company. Considering it gets dark quite early in Sweden at this time of year, that would mean women should avoid being in the streets alone after approximately 3pm local time.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
following criticism, Malmo police issued a formal statement on Monday retracting those remarks, describing them as "unfortunate and unclear."

"My advice is to behave as usual and not act on fear," said police spokesperson Mats Karlsson, as cited by SVT.

So far, police have not linked this most recent incident to the previous two but are also not ruling out a connection. In this latest case, there is no CCTV footage to analyze but police are attempting to recover footage from surrounding areas in a bid to catch the attackers.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Anita Hill to lead commission to combat sexual harassment in Hollywood
A newly formed commission comprised of top Hollywood executives has chosen Anita Hill to chair its efforts to combat sexual harassment across the entertainment industry, it was announced Friday.

A powerhouse committee including studio, talent agency and guild leaders from across the film, television, digital and music industries attended the meeting convened by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Nike Foundation Co-Chair Maria Eitel, attorney Nina Shaw and venture capitalist and activist Freada Kapor Klein.

Among those involved in the new effort to create "safer, fairer, more equitable and accountable workplaces" in Hollywood are Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos, Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, Atlantic Records Chair and COO Julie Greenwald, William Morris Endeavor Co-CEO Ari Emanuel, Creative Artists Agency Co-Chairman Bryan Lourd, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Dawn Hudson and SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris.

The Commission on Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace aims to create a "comprehensive strategy" to address the epidemic of sexual harassment and misconduct that has rocked Hollywood and the country in recent months, exposing alleged abuses by figures such as Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Russell Simmons. Next steps will follow in the new year, according to the group.

"The Commission will not seek just one solution, but a comprehensive strategy to address the complex and inter-related causes of the problems of parity and power," Kennedy said in a statement. "The fact that so many industry leaders ‐ across film, television, music, digital, unions, agencies, ATA, AMPAS, television academy and guilds ‐ came together, in one room, to explore solutions speaks to a new era."

Hill is a professor of social policy, law and women’s studies at Brandeis University and a National Women’s Law Center board member who previously chaired the Human Rights Committee of the International Bar Assn. She became an emblem for women’s rights when she brought sexual harassment allegations against then-U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.

Exactly how the new commission will present best practices to curb sexual harassment remains to be seen.

"We will be focusing on issues ranging from power disparity, equity and fairness, safety, sexual harassment guidelines, education and training, reporting and enforcement, ongoing research, and data collection," Hill said. "It is time to end the culture of silence. I’ve been at this work for 26 years. This moment presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to make real change."

Claim of Iran military aid to Yemen sheer lie: Larijani
[PRESSTV] Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says the Islamic Theocratic Republic is not providing military assistance to Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and all claims to this effect are false.

Larijani made the remarks while addressing the extraordinary meeting of the Paleostinian Committee of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUOICM) in the Iranian capital Tehran on Monday.

"We are not a country that would deny providing military assistance to anybody," Larijani said.

He added that Iran was providing military assistance to Paleostine, but had not helped Yemeni fighters in their war with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
in military terms, dismissing any claim to this effect as a lie.

"The Yemenis' missiles belong to themselves and some countries cannot achieve their goals by making such claims," the top Iranian parliamentarian said.

Half of ‘dangerous’ Islamists in Germany no longer considered a threat: report
18 December
[TheLocal.de] The German security services believe that around half of the 720 people who are classified as “dangerous Islamists” do not actually pose a particular terror threat, the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) reported on Monday. At the same time, the security services concluded that the other half of those classified as dangerous pose a high risk.

The information comes from a new form of analysis conducted by Germany’s 16 state police services and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). The security services used the Radar-ITE system for their analysis, which was developed by the BKA and Swiss scientists.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière has said that the security services have foiled three terror attacks this year. According to the SZ, 50 “dangerous” Islamists have been deported so far in 2017.

The BKA hopes that the system can help Germany's overstretched police services to focus on the people most likely to pose a terror threat. German Police Union (GdP) chairman Oliver Malchow on Monday said, “The police need around 24 officers for a round-the-clock observation. We simply have neither the capacity to do this.”

German naval vessel rescues more than 100 migrants off Libyan coast
14 December
[DW] A Bundeswehr vessel has rescued 102 migrants off the coast of Libya. In a dramatic few days of rescue missions, a further 50 migrants were airlifted after being stranded in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece.

The German navy has been patrolling the Mediterranean crossing from northern Africa into Europe since May 2015 as part of an EU mission dubbed "Sophia." In that time, German troops have rescued some 22,000 migrants trying to make it across from Libya to Italy.

As Europe scrambles to stem the flow migrants arriving on its shores, data published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN's migration agency, has reported a drop in the number of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Compared to the 273,000 migrants that landed between January and August 2016, only about 121,000 arrived during the same period this year.
The number would drop even further, were the German navy and other idiots to return those people to the Libyan shore instead of taking them where they were deliberately too poorly equipped to go.
Danish man loses passport for fighting for Isis
13 December
[TheLocal.dk] A 22-year-old Danish-born man has been sentenced to five years in prison after travelling to Syria to fight for the Islamic State terror group. The man’s passport has also been seized by authorities.

The man, Anis Laraba, has Algerian heritage and was born and raised in Denmark. He was an 18-year-old upper secondary school student when he travelled to Syria in 2013 and joined the armed group. Laraba was found to have participated in battle on the side of Isis, thereby breaching Danish terror laws.

He travelled to the Middle Eastern country with a second Danish citizen, Enes Cifti, who has been convicted of similar offences. Cifti was the first Danish-born person to be stripped of his passport when his case was taken to the Supreme Court in November this year, with Laraba now receiving the same punishment.

Laraba was also linked to a radical Danish group known as Kaldet til Islam (Called to Islam).

Home Front: WoT
Iraqi refugee jailed 16 years in the US for supporting ISIS
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A refugee from Iraq was sentenced by a Houston court Monday to 16 years in prison for seeking to join ISIS and learn bomb-making skills.
Only sixteen? Originally it was twenty-five....and he was arrested less than two years ago, so the decrease isn’t compensation for an overly long trial.
Omar Faraj Saeed al-Hardan,
...who appears in our archives without the hyphen, thusly: Omar Faraj Saeed Al Hardan, which explains why the Homeland Security no-fly lists are such a mess...
a 25-year-old of Paleostinian origin who was born in Iraq and lived in refugee camps in Iraq and Jordan, was accepted into the United States in 2009.

He earned his permanent residency two years later and, according to US law enforcement, in 2013 began communicating with another refugee in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,,
...another young gentleman of the Palestinian persuasion who grew up in so called refugee camps in Iraq...
discussing traveling to Syria to fight for the al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
h group.

The next year, he discussed with an FBI informant his hopes of traveling to fight with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group and a desire to be trained in making detonators for improvised bombs.

He and the FBI informant also practiced shooting with an AK-47, and Hardan posted statements in support of ISIS online, according to the Justice Department.

He was tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in January 2016 and charged with providing material support to ISIS.

"Any person who provides material support to a foreign terrorist organization will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," said Acting US Attorney Abe Martinez.

President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
has slashed by more than half the country's annual intake of refugees and placed restrictions on other immigrants colonists, saying it is a conduit for potential turbans to enter the United States.
So it would seem.
Separately, a former Washington-area transit police officer
...a thirteen year veteran at the time in question...
who converted to Islam was convicted of trying to help ISIS.

Nicholas Young, 37, had tried to help another man join up with ISIS, only to find that the other man was an undercover FBI informant.
That happens quite a bit, oddly enough.
Oddly, Young was also called a neo-Nazi by prosecutors,
...both are violently supremacist worldviews, but Islamofascism is more respectable nowadays, as well as more violent. Mr. Young (his nom de guerre was no doubt Abu Idiotullah al Amriki) is treading a path long ago made wide and smooth by real Nazis who found sanctuary in the Arab world...
while his lawyers defended him as simply someone with quirky hobbies.
Trying to get to Syria to murder and rape is a quirky hobby? The lawyer is definitely operating on the “throw it all up against the wall, and hope something sticks” philosophy.
He faces up to 60 years in prison.

China-Japan-Koreas
Chinese experts: War on Korean Peninsula may come sooner than later
[UPI] Chinese regional experts have warned that an outbreak of war on the Korean Peninsula looks likelier than ever, despite Seoul and Beijing's agreement last week that such a conflict cannot be tolerated.

Chinese daily Global Times quoted Shi Yinhong, Professor of Renmin University, who said, "The possibility of war breaking out on the Korean peninsula has become the highest in several decades," pointing to the "vicious cycle of threats" between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Shi said that that China can only delay an all-out clash between them as it is too late to turn the situation around. "China only delay war, hoping that the detonator of the time bomb that is North Korea can be removed," he said.
How dreadfully passive voice, to be sure. And who is to bell the cat that China hand-reared from a kitten?
Wang Hongguang, former Deputy Commander of the Nanjing Military Region suggested war could occur much earlier than expected, Chosun Ilbo reported.

"It could break out tonight. It may come before March next year when South Korea and the United States begin their annual military exercise," he said.

Wang cited a local newspaper article that provided a guideline for Chinese citizens in case of a nuclear explosion, saying this was "a signal conveyed to the North telling it to prepare for the coming war."

Putting aside the timing, Professor of Nanjing University Zhu Feng believes Beijing must brace itself for war.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, a "soft-landing" solution is impossible, he said, adding that "China must prepare psychologically and practically for a nuclear conflict, a radioactive fallout and an atomic explosion."

Last week, the Chinese navy began conducting a four-day live-fire exercise off North Korean waters while the air force held simulated anti-missile drills with Russia, South China Morning Post reported.

The joint exercise was aimed at repelling ballistic and cruise missile threats in the region, according to Beijing's defense ministry.

Iraq
Diyala Dead Guys Documented: 7 ISIS bad guys dead, including the Al Qaeda in Iraq holdover

A first-generation al-Qaeda leader killed in Diyala: MP
They called him Gramps abu AQI, but never to his face.
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) One of the earliest members of al-Qaeda in Iraq was killed Monday in Diyala, a parliament representative of the province was quoted saying.

Furat al-Tamimi told alsumaria News that “ a joint security team managed to kill Ali Mohamed Sahi in a special operation south of Beldruz (30 km east of Baqubah)”.

Tamimi said Sahi belonged to the earliest generation of al-Qaeda leaders in Diyala.

According to Tmaimi, Sahi joined the Islamic State after the militant group came to the forefront, noting that he leads “ one of the most dangerous terrorist cells in Diyala, especially at the Dainiya Basin”.

Sahi fled Mosul to Diyala after the city was recaptured by Iraqi troops in July.

Al-Qaeda, which fought against U.S. troops following the 2003 invasion of Iraq against late president Saddam Hussein, has seen its militant activity disappearing with the rise of the Islamic State in 2014. Many members of the group are thought to have joined IS when the latter proclaimed a self-styled “caliphate” in Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014.
Iran PressTV adds:
Furat al-Tamimi, a provincial official, told Arabic-language al-Sumaria television network that government troops ambushed Ali Mohamed Sahi and his two aides on Monday and shot them dead.

Four Islamic State militants killed in surprise security campaigns in Diyala

Diyala (Iraqinews.com) Four Islamic State militants were killed in various security campaigns in Diyala over the past 24 hours, a military commander said.

“Iraqi troops, backed by al-Hashd al-Shaabi, carried out various surprise security campaigns, targeting Islamic State in Baqubah city in Diyala, leaving four militants killed,” Commander of Tigris Operations Maj. Gen. Mazhar al-Azzawi told Alghad Press on Monday.

The security campaigns were launched after receiving accurate intelligence information on the location of the IS terrorists, he added.

India-Pakistan
Fact against fabrication
[DAILYTIMES.PK] In Pakistain, the effort of transforming fabrication into fact is assuming the proportions of an art form with an ever larger number of people falling gullibly onto its venomous tracks. The heinous Christmas-eve attack on the Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in Quetta killing nine people and injuring dozens more, some of them seriously, is a case in point. Instead of facing up to the fact that this is one more of a series of gruesome features dotting our daily lives which need to be combated with a strong and pragmatic narrative coupled with display of political will, layers of fabrication will be built to dull its impact, even creating erroneous and misleading impressions regarding its hows and whys.

The sequential steps of such an effort would include stories on the relative infrequency of terror attacks in Pakistain, even less so in the sectarian and religious domains, the positive outcome of the military operations which have been conducted in the recent past, the timely intervention of the security personnel in averting damage which could have been far more lethal, and trying to drown the sickness of terror in a parlance of condolence and sympathy messages overflowing with intent to help the families which have suffered. There will also be a deafening crescendo of an unflinching national resolve to ensure that the criminals and their aiders and handlers are punished. All this will be conveniently forgotten once overtaken by another similar or dissimilar event in the not so distant future.

I would not be surprised if someone were to craft an outlandish fable that the church was not the real target, but someone who was in the vicinity at that given moment, this being a case of personal enmity. In turn, such-like narrative would be parroted wildly in the evening television shows in an attempt to create further hallucinations. No one will dare ask why such-like things keep happening, and why is this malaise growing with time?

Let’s move to another avenue which illustrates this effort of merging fact with fabrication, even at the cost of clouding the integrity of a key state pillar. Ever since the abject failure of virtually all institutions to deal with accountability- and transparency-related cases falling in their domains, and with all of this landing at the doorsteps of the judiciary, it has been targeted for its alleged partisanship. Its judgments against the former prime minister have been portrayed as apt evocations of its deep-set prejudice. It has also been condemned afor having acted in conformity with a script written elsewhere. The painstaking soliloquies establishing the indispensability of individuals over the state and its institutions is an aberration of the grossest form, yet promoted forcefully in this wonder-land.

In the process, the other side of the coin is completely overlooked, the one dealing with the history of crime and corruption of the family over decades. The unabashed disdain with which such misleading projections are made in public and then stoutly defended during the hilarious comedy shows enacted in the evening television transmissions is unbelievable. But not for the ones who are propounding the falsehoods and who would want every viewer to believe them to the postscript. No shame. No embarrassment. At the end of it all, one is lost in separating fact from fiction. It is all so enmeshed.

At a different level, facts stand out from fabrications in no uncertain terms as, indeed, these should. No matter how thick we try to lay it out for the world, it can see through the load of crap which melts at the first incision of enquiry. But, in the process, alongside creating doubts about our efficacy as a nation, we also lose our credibility ‐ as would a claim that load-shedding in Pakistain is a story of the past. Looking at the person later, I did not see a shred of remorse. It is like they are tutored in the art of lying shamelessly ‐ and they do!

Israel will no longer take part in 'ping-pong' game of rocket attacks with Hamas - defense minister
[RT] Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman says Tel Aviv will no longer allow a game of "ping-pong" rocket exchanges to take place with Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood.

"In the next few months all existing tunnels will be blown up and destroyed" by new technologies invented by Israel, Lieberman said during an interview with RTVI, adding that Israel is aiming to put an end to the "ping-pong" of rocket exchanges.

His comments come amid increased tensions between Israel and Paleostinians - who are supported by Hamas - after US President Donald Trump

According to Lieberman, Hamas is solely responsible for the escalating violence in the Gazoo Strip and argues that a large-scale attack from Hamas is inevitable, stating that "should Hamas be faced with the alternative of losing power or attacking Israel, without a doubt, Hamas will choose another conflict with Israel."

The defense minister also claims that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Iraq
Six wounded as protests continue against beleaguered Kurdistan government
Sulaimaniya (IraqiNews.com) Six people were wounded in Iraqi Kurdistan’s province of Sulaimaniya as protests flared Monday against delayed wages and poor services.

A medical source at the Sulaimaniya emergency hospital told Alghad Press that six people arrived suffering from suffocation with tear gas fired by police.

Thousands of Iraqi Kurds took to the streets against delay of salaries and lack of services in parts of the Kurdistan Region, Kurdish network NRTTV reported.

“Protests broke out in 13 cities in the Kurdistan Region on Monday against the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) austerity measures, delay of payments and lack of services”.

It added that protestors torched the offices of the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the opposition Change Movement (Gorran) and the Patriotic Union of the Kurdistan (PUK) in Piramagroon northwest of Sulaimani.

The Baghdad-based Iraqi government had vowed to send salaries of Kurdish public employees following a political crisis and a later military standoff that resulted from the referendum the autonomous Kudistan region held in September for secession from Iraq.

The Iraqi government had adopted penal measures against the Kurdish authorities following the poll, including a ban on financial transactions.

The issues of employees payments and the region’s share in the national budget had always been a subject of dispute between both governments.

"India’s position on Paleostine is independent and consistent. It is shaped by our views and interests, and not determined by any third country," the statement said.

Netanyahu is set to visit India in January, following the high-profile visit of Modi to Israel in July, when he spent three days being shown the country by Netanyahu, but didn’t go to Ramallah, the seat of the Paleostinian Authority government. It was the first-ever visit to Israel by an Indian prime minister.

Abbas visited India in May, meeting with Modi to discuss cooperation and strengthening ties.

Drone strikes: Senate tells govt to seek ‘compensation’ from US
[DAILYTIMES.PK] Legislators in the Upper House of parliament on Monday adopted a resolution urging the government to demand financial compensation from the US on account of lives lost and damages done to the properties of innocent citizens of Pakistain as a result of drone attacks inside the territorial limits of the country since 2000.

The Senators urged the government to send copies of the resolution adopted by the House to the UN General Assembly, NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
, EU, Commonwealth and Asian Parliamentary Assembly in order to highlight impact of drone attacks on the social, economic and psychological conditions of the victims.

Ruling PML-N Senator Javed Abbasi presented the resolution which was adopted unanimously.

In another resolution, the government was urged to lay all international conventions, treaties, covenants, commitments and agreements signed or ratified by the government of Pakistain before both parliament.

Bangladesh
Family Claims NYC Bomber Visited Bangladesh to Do Charity Work for Rohingya Muslims
[Breitbart] Bangladesh’s Dhaka Tribune reported Thursday that Akayed Ullah, the jihadist responsible for a failed suicide kaboom in New York’s Port Authority Bus Terminal, visited a Rohingya refugee camp during his last trip to the country to conduct charity work.

The Tribune cites Ullah’s mother-in-law, Mahfuja Akhter, as the source for the story tying Ullah to the Rohingya camp. Ullah last visited Bangladesh in September. According to Akhter, "He stayed in Cox’s Bazar for a day and distributed first aid medicines among the displaced Rohingyas in Kutupalong." She insisted that he refused to stay in a hotel "in order to save money to purchase more medicines for the helpless people."

The Rohingya are a majority-Moslem ethnic people from Burma. Human rights NGOs monitoring the situation estimate that hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled the country, following the launch of a nationwide campaign to eradicate them, and traveled to Bangladesh where many suffer in refugee camps with no sign of being able to return home in the near future.

The Dhaka Tribune notes that Bangladeshi counterterrorism officers confirmed that Ullah had visited the camp in question in October, but could not definitively say that he went alone and did not provide any details as to how he decided to make the trip or if anyone invited him.

He entered the country after being sponsored for an immigrant visa by an uncle.

Update: Fotos from the Dupont, WA Amtrac train crash
Follow up to this story from yesterday.
[Quartz] At least 6 people have been killed and scores more injured in a passenger train derailment near Tacoma, Washington. The Associated Press reports that an Amtrak train carrying 78 passengers derailed while traveling at more than 80 mph, sending several cars onto the busy Interstate 5 below.

The train was making its inaugural trip along a new route from Seattle, Washington to Portland, Oregon aiming to allow for higher speeds and faster service between cities. At least 50 people were sent to hospitals, more than a dozen with critical or serious injuries, the AP reported. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
And from Anguper Hupomosing9418:
Speeding alleged cause of Amtrak derailment in Washington State

#2  So, evidently the speed goes from highway speed+ to school zone speed for the curve. The engineer should have slowed down about a mile back, cause it's a train.
I think they do need one of these in California; make the legislature ride it.

#4  The tight bend appeared to be directly in front of the locomotive still on the tracks. Maybe he braked for the turn and due to a system failure the cars and/or locomotive behind didn’t, causing the train to jackknife.

#5  The tight bend appeared to be directly in front of the locomotive still on the tracks.
The train was southbound, had a front locomotive and a rear locomotive. The front locomotive derailed & fell onto I-5. The rear locomotive never derailed & was still on the tracks. NTSB in a TV interview stated they retrieved the event recorder from the rear locomotive & verified the train was going 80 mph when the derailment started. They haven't yet spoken to the engineer.

#8  So speed appears to be the problem rather than something on or done to the tracks.

Human error is always a strong possibility. I don't know anything about automated controls and signalling on rail systems, but given our current crop of enviro-anarchists, I have to wonder if there was a warning signal that was disabled or a control system tampered with.

#9  Wow, thanks Anguper. So you've seen the photo of the other engine on the tracks with a tighter curve beyond the direction it's pointing? The train managed to (almost) negotiate that at 80 mph?

#10  King5 also has animation of wreck. Train was running west parallel to I-5 before reaching a curve and overpass south bound.

Actual fatalities so far are _3_, not 6. But I’ve also heard/read that 2 trains cars may have more bodies—the cars are not secure so recovery has been delayed.

#11  #8 - signalling systems are nearly idiot-proof. The drivers - not so much. Engineers are supposed to know every curve and every speed restriction before the leave the terminal. Driving a passenger train while texting killed 25 in California in 2008.Chatsworth, 2008

Podcast: Jack Devine on his three decade career in the CIA | SOFREP Radio
[SOFREPNews] I just have got to say it, this may be one of the most interesting guests to ever come on the podcast. When it comes to taking part in CIA operations that have truly influenced the course of modern-day American history, and world history at large, few have the experience of Mr. Jack Devine. Starting his career with the Agency from the late 60’s and into the 90’s, Jack was there for major global events like Iran-Contra, the fall of Chile’s President, and the fight to push the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Jack was also a close personal friend of Charlie Wilson who he describes as a patriot, and labels the film “Charlie Wilson’s War” to be much more a work of fiction than most would have you believe.

We get Devine’s take on current events and figures like Edward Snowden, the investigation of former FBI director Robert Mueller, as well as the Iran nuclear deal and the dangers of a nuclear capable North Korea. Devine is currently the President of The Arkin Group, and his latest book is “Good Hunting: An American Spymaster’s Story.” You’ll hear the shift Jack has seen of former CIA veterans going public, as well as the scary trend of guys with phony credentials claiming CIA experience and being given major platforms in the media. Strap in, because you’re about to learn a whole lot from this man.
Set aside 1:26:19. The gentleman has a great deal to say.

#3  Excellent interview. A key takeaway may have been Devine's lament over the politicization at the Director levels of CIA/FBI, senior political appointments as it were.

With regard to his denial of agency involvement in the illicit duel-use of agency cargo aircraft in Central America and elsewhere, some seasoning may be required.

Scotto article dated 15 Dec 2017. Actual Devine interview not dated, but it's always important to note what is not discussed. Christopher Steele... not discussed. Bruce and Nellie Ohr would have been rich topical entries, but news on them probably broke post-interview.

The Syrian leader made the remarks in a meeting with a high-profile official and economic delegation from Russia, led by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Monday, Syria’s official news agency, SANA, reported.

"When we talk about those referred to as 'the Kurds', they are in fact not just Kurds. All those who work for a foreign country, mainly those under American command... are traitors" regardless of their names, Assad said.

Lebanon detains Uber driver in killing of British diplomat
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Lebanese Uber driver with a criminal record has confessed to killing a British woman who worked at the British Embassy in Beirut, a Lebanese security source said on Monday.

The security source said preliminary investigations into the murder of Rebecca Dykes showed the motive was purely criminal, not political, and that the suspect had immediately confessed to the crime, which took place early on Saturday.

A front man for Uber said in an email: "We are horrified by this senseless act of violence. Our hearts are with the victim and her family. We are working with authorities to assist their investigation in any way we can."

The incident is the latest to highlight the issue of safety at Uber, which was stripped of its operating licence in London in September over concerns about its approach to reporting serious criminal offences and background checks on drivers.

London police complained in April that Uber was either not disclosing, or taking too long to report, serious crimes including sexual assaults and this put the public at risk. The firm’s boss has promised to make things right in the British capital.

And globally, the app has suffered a series of scandals in 2017 as a stream of executives left amid controversies involving allegations of sexual harassment and issues surrounding data privacy and business practices.

The company, valued at around $70 billion with investors including Goldman Sachs, has faced bans and protests in countries around the world as it disrupts traditional players who have accused it of cutting corners on safety.

A second security bigshot in Leb said the suspect was aged 41 and had been locked away
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
on drug-related charges in the period 2015-17.

Leb’s state news agency NNA said the suspect had picked Dykes up in his taxi in Beirut’s Gemmayzeh district on Friday evening before assaulting and killing her. Police traced his car through surveillance cameras on the highway, it said.

Lebanese police only said they had arrested a suspect and that it was not a political crime.

Dykes’ body was found strangled by a main highway outside Beirut, a security source said on Sunday. She worked at the British Embassy for the Department for International Development, her LinkedIn page said.

"The whole embassy is deeply shocked, saddened by this news," British ambassador to Leb Hugo Shorter said on Sunday.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Rebecca," Dykes’ family said in a statement issued by Britannia’s Foreign Office. "We are doing all we can to understand what happened."

Turkish authorities issue detention warrant for 106 over links to failed coup
[PRESSTV] Ottoman Turkish prosecutors have issued detention warrants for 106 people, believed to have worked as matchmakers for the so-called Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which is accused by Ankara of orchestrating last year’s failed military coup, Istanbul police say.

According a front man for the Istanbul police on Monday, 62 of the suspects had been nabbed
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
in a counter-terrorism operation centered in Istanbul but spread over 20 other provinces in the Anatolian country.

He further said that further operations to locate the remaining 44 suspects were ongoing, adding that they were "marriage officials" for supporters of the US-based opposition holy man Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
, who Ankara says was behind the botched mid-July 2016 putsch.

... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
, however, Ankara labeled his transnational religious and social movement, Gulen Hareketi, as a terror organization, the so-called FETO. The Ottoman Turkish government has so far submitted a total of seven requests to US officials concerning the extradition of the Pennsylvania-based figure.

The police front man further said that the suspects had allegedly helped set up arranged marriages for some of Gulen’s followers. Ottoman Turkish authorities claim that the Gulen network closely monitored the personal and professional lives of some followers, including their education, career and marriages.

Ottoman Turkish police and the country’s intelligence officials managed to identify the suspects via using conversations traced on ByLock, an encrypted messaging application that was allegedly used by Gulen’s supporters for communication, the police official said.

IDF strikes Hamas targets after Gaza rocket hits Israeli town
[IsraelTimes] Planes target training camp in the northern Strip, destroying six facilities belonging to the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, terrorist organization including buildings and 'terror infrastructure'

Israel carried out a series of Arclight airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gazoo overnight Sunday-Monday, the army said, in retaliation for a volley of rockets fired at Israel from the Paleostinian enclave.

In a statement, the IDF spokesperson said Israeli planes targeted a training camp in the northern Gazoo Strip, destroying six separate facilities belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization including buildings and "terror infrastructure."

The army "will not allow attacks or attempted attacks on citizens," the statement said.

Earlier, the army confirmed that three two rockets were launched from the Gazoo Strip Sunday night, two striking the Hof Ashkelon region inside Israel and a third falling withing the Hamas-controlled territory.

Police said that one rocket hit inside an Israeli community, and the other struck an open field nearby, causing neither damage nor injury.

The rocket fire came two days after an attack in which a missile was fired at Israel, but fell short and struck a house belonging to an Egyptian family in the northern Gazoo city of Beit Hanoun, according to the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, which acts as Israel’s military liaison to the Paleostinians. "Once again, the terror groups launch rockets at the residents of Gazoo," COGAT said.

A Hadashot news report said the rocket damaged the home of the brother of a senior Hamas official, Mushir al-Masri.
*Snicker.*
On Wednesday, a rocket fired at Israel from Gazoo also fell inside the Paleostinian territory and hit a public school, damaging a classroom, Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, who heads COGAT, said at the time.
