Spackle-Faced Evita Indicted

Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez was indicted Tuesday in a corruption case involving public works.

Federal Judge Julian Ercolini approved charges of illicit association and fraudulent administration against Fernandez, and two former aides: ex-Planning Minister Julio de Vido and former Public Works Secretary Jose Lopez.

Also named was businessman Lazaro Baez, whose Austral Construcciones company allegedly benefited from irregular contracts. The judge's order froze the equivalent of up to $633 million of each defendant's assets, though it was not clear they have that much.

The ruling published by official Center of Judicial Information said the defendants are accused of associating to illegally take public fund meant for public works between May 2003 and December 2015.

Fernandez made no immediate comment on the charge, but she has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
"No, no, imposible!"
Since leaving office in December 2015, Fernandez has alleged that she is the victim of persecution by her conservative successor, Mauricio Macri.
"Pobrecita yo!"
In May, a judge indicted Fernandez on charges of manipulating currency exchange futures markets, allegedly causing economic damage to the government.

2 men sleeping in dumpsters take longer nap than anticipated
[USA Today] TALLAHASSEE -- Two men who likely never met died the same bone-crushing way, according to recently released investigative reports: They fell asleep in dumpsters that city garbage trucks emptied and were killed in the maw of the trash compactor.

The bodies of William J. "Jay" Norris and Anthony D. Todd were found two months apart at the Leon County waste transfer station. One was a longtime homeless resident of Tallahassee. The other was a more recent arrival.

As coincidental as those bizarre circumstances appear, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said no foul play was involved. The two deaths were purely accidental and seemingly avoidable.

Their deaths raise questions about the safety of trash bins and whether enough precautions are in place to prevent people from getting trapped in trucks' compactors.

Morocco Warned Germany Twice About Berlin Killer Anis Amri; German Intel Did Nothing

A Moroccan security official says that his country's intelligence service warned Germany twice about the risk posed by Anis Amri, the radical Muslim who slaughtered 12 people at a Christmas market in Berlin earlier this month.

The official, who spoke to Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, says that the Germans received two written warnings, one on September 19 and the other on October 1, about Amri's radical Islamic beliefs. He explains:

Correspondence from the Moroccan security agencies had a clear warning about the Tunisian man's desire to carry out a terrorist act.

Earlier this month, Dutch populist Geert Wilders was criticized because he told Angela Merkel in a tweet that she had blood on her hands.

We now know that he was 100% correct. Merkel and the entire German government do have blood on their hands. Not only because they had an open-borders policy that allowed terrorists like Amri to get in, but also because they sat on their hands when they were warned about specific individuals with specific plans.

If Merkel had any sense of honor, she'd resign. Instead, she's eyeing yet another term as German chancellor. Shameful.
Leftists have no shame. They will sell you down the river while getting caught and then tell you it is for your own good.

#7  "Germany continues to have a reputation for effective and efficient government administration, despite the fact all the evidence suggests Germany is now run by a collection of thumbless boobs. As someone on Sailer’s site noted, this is not a new thing. Germany has been operating like a drunk on holiday for quite some time. Angela Merkel’s decision to import a million violent low-IQ barbarians is just the most egregious example of the reckless disregard for their duties by the German rulers and the indifference of the German people to it.

It’s not just the Germans, either. The French have been tolerating the importation of useless savages from North Africa for decades. Paris is now a small tourist area surrounded by Bronze Age cavemen. Every election, the French people come out and vote for the guy promising to murder more French citizens, because the alternative risks being called a racist and that’s worse than death. The fact that millions of otherwise sensible people can vote in favor of suicide like this speaks to the power of belief."

Narcotics by mail from overseas overwhelm US Postal Service
Boston Globe:
Deadly synthetic opioids are streaming into the United States amid a flood of mail that arrives unscreened from abroad every day, overwhelming the Postal Service and fueling the drug epidemic gripping much of the country, security experts and Massachusetts lawmakers say.

Nearly 1 million packages a day enter the country without any advance electronic information that might flag the presence of dangerous opioids such as fentanyl, much of which is manufactured in China, said Juliette Kayyem, a former assistant Homeland Security secretary.

An estimated 340 million pieces of mail each year pass unchecked through the Postal Service and US Customs without the prior electronic screening that was authorized by Congress 14 years ago but has yet to be fully implemented, Kayyem said..."There is a lot of money to be made," she said. In addition to opioids, security officials are concerned about hazardous materials and counterfeit goods that are slipping through.

Senior Facebook Employee Arrested For Allegedly Soliciting Sex From Underage Girl
[GIZMODO] Dov Katz, the head of computer vision at Oculus VR, was arrested near Seattle on December 21 for allegedly soliciting sex from an underage girl. According to charging records, Katz allegedly attempted to pay $350 to have unprotected sex with someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl.

Katz, 38, has been charged with attempted commercial sexual abuse of a minor. According to the charging documents, Katz wasn’t actually texting a 15-year-old girl, but an undercover agent from the Tukwila Police Department. Katz, an Israeli citizen living in America, has since been released on $125,000 bail according to the King County jail website.

Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion in 2014. According to a profile in The Times of Israel, Katz was "an an integral part of the team that developed the Oculus Rift headset."

According to charging documents initially posted by GeekWire, Katz allegedly asked the undercover officer, whom he met on the website Backpage, for an overnight girlfriend experience. Katz also allegedly asked the girl, "how many times do you think you’ll make me...?"

Katz was arrested with $600 in cash when he arrived at an Embassy Suites hotel just south of Seattle, after he allegedly arranged a meeting with someone he believed to be the underage girl. Following the arrest, Katz told officers his phone number, which matched the phone number that was texting the undercover officer.
The local prosecution (Non-Federal) charges and bail are meaningless. I'm sure he's back in Tel Aviv right now sipping a cold Goldstar.
Here are the charging documents:

‘The Fashion of Islam' to Arrive at de Young in 2018

The museum’s new director, Max Hollein, has scheduled "The Fashion of Islam," the first major show developed since his arrival, for the fall of 2018.[snip]

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli defense minister calls Paris peace summit a ‘tribunal,' compares it to Dreyfus trial
[RT] Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has lambasted the upcoming Middle East peace conference in Paris, labeling it a "scheme" designed to hurt Israel’s reputation and likening it to the infamous trial of French Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus.

Speaking in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, on Monday, Lieberman denounced the plans unveiled by the French foreign minister on Thursday to convene some 70 countries in Paris on January 15 for a peace conference devoted to the settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Lieberman, who has repeatedly made headlines with his controversial statements, compared the conference to the historic trial of Alfred Dreyfus, a French artillery officer of Jewish heritage.

"There is only one difference between what they are planning in Paris [and the Dreyfus affair], last time there was only one Jew on the stand and now all of the people of Israel and the entire state of Israel," Lieberman said, Haaretz reported.

Dreyfus was convicted of treason in 1894 and stood a set of trials which split French society until he was completely cleared of all charges and reinstated in the army in 1906. His trial and conviction has long been seen as a symbol of injustice and anti-Semitiс views held by part of the public and the French media at the time.

Tim Blair: RUSSIAN INTERVENTION EXPOSED
h/t Instapundit
Did the Russians really rig the 2016 US election? You bet they did!

Secret documents recently discovered in a bin behind a Kremlin-district 24-hour cabbage and tobacco store reveal for the first time the devious extent of Russian interference. These plans were decades in the making.

Read on, as never-before-seen communiques between Russian agents Sergei Potrov and Dimitri Bienko outline the wicked plot ‐ beginning in 1947, on the day of Hillary Clinton’s birth:

Dearest Dimitri

I am pleased to report that phase one of Operation Cankles is total success! Soviet implantation of stupid American woman resulted in birth today of hefty girl-child destined to be unelectable candidate 70 years from now.

Child is basically just ankles and head, similar to sturdy and hard-working female stock from adored Ilmensky Mountains. In decadent America, nobody will ever vote for such a noble being.

Yours in Soviet solidarity,

Sergei

...During the mid-70s, the Russians toast a mission-advancing coup:

It is not to be believed! Hillary is getting married ‐ to a man! You owe me 50 rubles, Dimitri.

The fellow is Bill, called by friends ’horn dog’, ’el squeezo’ and ’the Arkansas assman’. He is very political. All his girlfriends say so. By ’all his girlfriends’, I mean whole female population of Little Rock. He go through them like great winter purge of traitor generals.

This can only assist our mission. Perhaps this Bill will even make it to the White House, if he can keep it in his pants for long enough (is phrase I pick up here).

Yours in jubilation,

Sergei

Even tectonic global changes could not sway Agents Potrov and Bienko from their cause:

Dearest Sergei,

Alas, our beloved Soviet Union is no more. Gorbachev has ruined everything. Please do not give up on Operation Cankles. It may prove to be the final major accomplishment of our great land and heroic peoples.

In other news, our budget has been slightly trimmed. Suggest you monitor Hillary from American streets, where lucrative sign-holding job will provide cover and help pay rent.

Yours in Glasnost,

Dimitri

Finally, on November 8, 2016, Sergei’s long mission comes to a victorious conclusion ‐ on the veteran agent’s 94th birthday:

Dearest Dimitri,

I know you have been dead ten years already, but I write to you for fondness and memories. Great friend, it is done. All that we have worked for, all that we have planned, all that we have dreamed. Our unelectable candidate was truly unelectable. Even the other patients here in the home did not vote for her. One voted for Eisenhower.

My time is not long, Dimitri. Soon I shall see you again, in the heaven that is a frozen-solid Siberian grave. We will rest in honour. Our work on this earth is complete.

Yours in espionage,

Sergei

Europe
Angela Merkel is destroying Europe
h/t Instapundit
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's celebrated open-door policy encouraged the migration of more than 1 million refugees in 2015, and hundreds of thousands more in 2016. It was lauded as a courageous triumph of humanitarianism. Even in 2016's year-end accolades, Merkel has been given hosannas for "keeping the doors ajar."

But after last week's Berlin attack, in which a man -- suspected to be a Tunisian migrant -- intentionally plowed an 18-wheeler into a crowded Christmas market, killing 12 and injuring dozens more, it's fair to say that Merkel's celebrated policy has actually been a disaster. After all, "keeping the doors ajar" is precisely how a naive person learns of the bad intentions of an intruder. And Merkel is learning a hard lesson, indeed. She said that welcoming this enormous wave of refugees was the only way to be true to "European values." But the current wave of terrorism and the enormous fear of crime and disorder in European cities is proving mortally dangerous not just to her own party, but to the European Union itself.
The way I see it, Europeans imported their own "Plaestinians".

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) -- Security staff at Fox Valley Mall in west suburban Aurora closed the mall early Monday night due to brawls inside. No serious injuries were reported.

Aurora police said they received a call for assistance from mall security due to an unruly crowd in a common area. Shortly after, a fight broke out in the food court, police said.

Police said more than 1,000 people were in the vicinity of the fight, which prompted them to evacuate and close the mall for the safety of patrnos. Cell phone cameras captured the commotion as the center of the mall erupted into chaos and terrified shoppers were sent scrambling for the exits.

"I'm still a little shaken up. I've never seen that many people inside brawling like that," said Alexis Malone, who was working inside the mall.

Seven juveniles were arrested and more are being questioned, police said. Officers from the Illinois State Police, DuPage County Sheriff's Office, Naperville, West Chicago, St. Charles, Geneva and Fox Valley Park District also responded to assist. Nearly 75 officers responded in total.

Drexel University assistant professor under fire for 'white genocide' tweet
[Reuters] A Drexel University professor, whose tweet that he wanted a "white genocide" for Christmas sparked a fire storm of criticism from the school and social media users, said on Monday his comment was satirical.

George Ciccariello-Maher, a white assistant professor of history and politics at the Philadelphia university, posted "All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide" on Twitter on Christmas Eve, according to media reports.

He followed up on Sunday by tweeting, "To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed."

Condemnation lit up Twitter after the comments from Ciccariello-Maher, an expert on Latin American social movements, were picked up by such conservative news sites as Breitbart News and The Daily Caller.

"What rock did this cretin crawl out from under?" Sean O'Reilly tweeted. Twitter user Camz wrote, "You want a white genocide, why not be the one who starts it and see where you end up. You coward."

Drexel University, a private school with about 26,000 students, said in a statement on Sunday that it had contacted Ciccariello-Maher to schedule a meeting about the tweets.

Drexel said that although it recognized the right of faculty members to express their views, the comments were "utterly reprehensible, deeply disturbing, and do not in any way reflect the values of the University."

Ciccariello-Maher said in an email on Monday that the tweets were only aimed at poking fun at white supremacists and that he and Drexel had become targets of a smear campaign.

He said that the concept of "white genocide" was used by white nationalists to denounce everything from interracial relationships to policies aimed at promoting multiple cultures.

"It is a figment of the racist imagination, it should be mocked, and I'm glad to have mocked it," Ciccariello-Maher wrote. Access to his Twitter account had been restricted on Monday.

Obama's war against America
...Obama’s predecessors’ opposition to the war against Israel at the UN was not merely an expression of their support for Israel. They acted also out of a fealty to US power, which is directly targeted by that war.

It is critical that we understand how this is the case, and why the implications of Resolution 2334 are disastrous to the US itself.

Resolution 2334 is being presented as an "anti-settlement" resolution. But it is not an anti-settlement resolution.

Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and neighborhoods in Jerusalem are being used ‐ as they always have been used ‐ as a means of delegitimizing the Jewish state as a whole, and legitimizing Palestinian terrorists and Islamic terrorists more generally. Resolution 2334 serves to criminalize Israel and its people and to undermine Israel’s right to exist, while embracing Palestinian terrorists and empowering them in their war to annihilate Israel.

America’s historic refusal to countenance such actions at the UN Security was never a purely altruistic position. It was also a stand for American power and the inherent justice of American superpower status and global leadership.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Appears the US did more than simply 'abstain' from the UN Israeli settlement vote
[Breitbart] Ukraine’s decision to vote in favor of the resolution appears to demonstrate the extent to which US President Barack Obama was behind the decision. According to officials in Israel, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, a Jew who is thought of as one of Israel’s main supporters, wanted that his country not be involved in the consultations held on the resolution.

However, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko decided to vote in favor of its passage following a telephone conversation with US Vice President Joe Biden.

"The text of the resolution is balanced," Kiev asserted. "It calls for taking measures necessary for peaceful solution from both Israeli and Palestinian sides: Israel should stop its settlement activities while Palestinian authorities ‐ to take effective measures toward fighting against terrorism."

But first, a brief history lesson …

The only binding resolution of international law, a resolution which has never been countermanded to this very day, is the July 1922 Mandate for Palestine. Adopted by the League of Nations, that resolution recognized the “historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country.” It called for the creation of a Jewish national homeland anywhere west of the Jordan River. Iraq
Is this the end for Iraq's Sabaeans?
[RUDAW.NET] Once a thriving community among Iraq's myriad of ancient religious groups, the country's Sabaean population is now facing challenges unmatched in its long and difficult history.

In the 1970s and 80s as Iraq went through a profound economic boom, despite the occasional bloody wars of the time, the Sabaeans, like most other minority groups, were still a relatively integrated community with nearly 10,000 families, the majority of whom lived in Baghdad, Nineveh Plains and Kirkuk.

Ironically, the overthrow of Iraq's dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003, whose brutal reign often resulted in systematic suppression of the Kurds and the Shiites, was paradoxically detrimental for the survival of religious minority groups such as the Sabaeans, the Shabaks and to some extents the Yezidis.

Many of these groups, some of which have been in Iraq even before the country converted to Islam in the 7th century, were assaulted almost immediately by the dominant religious groups after Iraq plunged into a bloody conflict following former regimes' ouster.

Decades later, these groups have seen their number decline dramatically and their communities increasingly dissolved and fragmented. The already strained conditions worsened when the Islamic State

bandidos murderous Moslems rose to power in areas where the Sabaeans and other such religious groups were residing.

"When the ISIS came, things started to change more rapidly for the Sabaean people. Many chose to migrate. Many still want to migrate. There are poor security conditions and there are no jobs for us, especially for our young people," Sabaean public figure, Loai Abdulrazaq told Rudaw.

Abdulrazaq was referring to the Sabaean community in Kirkuk which is now smaller than 50 families. He said they had been more than 200 families only a few years ago.

Abdulrazaq who sees a similar pattern in other areas of the country with Sabaean population, says the ongoing migration could definitely put a tragic end to the history of his people in Iraq.

The rapid decline of Sabaean population in the country has become a theme for the university students in Kirkuk who have been assigned to make scientific research into the cause of their migration.

Iezaz Abbas, who studies at the department for religious studies in Kirkuk told Rudaw she and her fellow students had decided to explore the Sabaean faith and then give an explanation as to why so many of them have decided to migrate despite the relative democracy that the Iraqi constitution has guaranteed.

The Sabaeans along with the Jews and the Christians have been mentioned in the Koran as "the People of the Book" who share the same god with the Moslems and are seen as "believers."

Some scholars believe the Sabaeans have converted to Islam but modern researches have tried to challenge that.

Abdulrazaq says they have urged the Iraqi parliament to empower the Sabaeans by guaranteeing them a seat in the Iraqi parliament and other local legislative bodies.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
UN Vote on Settlements Can’t Hide Palestinian Collapse
by Walter Russell Mead

[TheAmericanInterest] President B.O.’s decision not to block a UN Security Council resolution declaring Israeli settlements on the West Bank illegal can be read many ways. In part, it’s an Obama counter-strike against President-elect Trump’s unconventional moves aimed at sidelining Obama before the Inauguration. In part, it’s payback from the White House against a Netanyahu government that the White House feels has frustrated its quest for peace in the Middle East. In part, it’s a principled statement of sincere belief by a large group in the White House, representing many in the Democratic Party, reflecting the deep convictions of many American liberals and, especially, of American liberal Jews, about right and wrong in the modern Middle East. If American Jews were to hold a referendum on settlement policy, it is likely that the "no" side would win; American Jews are far more liberal than their counterparts in Israel, and the gap between the two communities is growing rather than shrinking over time.

Many Paleostinians and many of their sympathizers would like to see this vote as a landmark victory for the Paleostinian cause in a long campaign to isolate Israel diplomatically and to delegitimize it morally in the eyes of the world. The vote is certainly a propaganda victory for the Paleostinian cause, but it does nothing to help the Paleostinians in practical terms. Indeed, a sober look at the situation suggests that the Paleostinians have not been this weak, this divided or this helpless in many decades. Almost everywhere one looks around the world, the net effect of the policies of the Obama presidency has been to undermine the movements and the values that the President hoped to support; the cause of the Paleostinians and the quest for the two state solution are no exceptions to the rule.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army's Republican Guard units discovered a large supply of weapons on Sunday that belonged to the jihadist rebels in eastern Aleppo prior to their departure last weekend.

Based on the video footage captured by Hezbollah's official media wing, the Syrian Arab Army confiscated several missiles, mortar shells, assault rifles, and ammunition in eastern Aleppo on Sunday.

In addition to the aforementioned weapons, the Syrian Arab Army also discovered tanks hidden around the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo City.

The Syrian Arab Army is still combing through these east Aleppo neighborhoods, looking for enemy weapons and explosives that may have been hidden prior to the departure of jihadist rebels from the area.

Kurd forces capture Jabaar in Raqqa
Raqqa – Backed by the US-led coalition’s air support, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Monday expelled ISIS militants from the strategic town of Jaabar in western Raqqa Governorate.

After days of heavy clashes with militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), the Kurdish-led SDF troops were able to liberate the Jaabar town on Monday evening.

“The liberation of Jaabar will pave the way for our forces to accelerate the anti-ISIS operations in western Raqqa,” SDF officer Habun Osman told ARA News.

“The town contained a main weaponry storage centre for ISIS. The facility is now controlled by the SDF,” the Kurdish official said.

Jaabar was also used by ISIS as a supply route between the city of Raqqa and its northwestern countryside.

At least 53 ISIS militants were reportedly killed in the fight for Jaabar.

The progress comes as part of the SDF-led Euphrates Wrath Operation that aims at isolating ISIS in Raqqa and eventually liberate the city, which is deemed a de facto capital for the radical group.

China-Japan-Koreas
Chinese carrier enters South China Sea amid renewed tension
A group of Chinese warships led by the country's sole aircraft carrier entered the top half of the South China Sea on Monday after passing south of Taiwan, the self-ruled island's Defence Ministry said of what China has termed a routine exercise.

The Soviet-built Liaoning aircraft carrier has taken part in previous exercises, including some in the South China Sea, but China is years away from perfecting carrier operations similar to those the United States has practised for decades.

Taiwan's Defence Ministry said the carrier, accompanied by five vessels, passed southeast of the Pratas Islands, which are controlled by Taiwan, heading southwest. The carrier group earlier passed 90 nautical miles south of Taiwan's southernmost point via the Bashi Channel, between Taiwan and the Philippines.

"Staying vigilant and flexible has always been the normal method of maintaining airspace security," said ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi, declining to say whether Taiwan fighter jets were scrambled or if submarines had been deployed. Chen said the ministry was continuing to "monitor and grasp the situation."

Senior Taiwan opposition Nationalist lawmaker Johnny Chiang said the Liaoning exercise was China's signal to the United States that it has broken through the "first island chain," an area that includes Japan's Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan.

The U.S. State Department on Monday said its position has not changed since July, when it said it was continuing to monitor China's military modernization and that it expects nations conducting defence exercises to comply with the law. Representatives for the Pentagon declined to comment.

Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for Trump, said the incoming team had no comment on China's move. Trump takes office on Jan. 20 but has already has drawn headlines over a series of statements on China and Taiwan.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said people should not read too much into what the carrier was up to, as its movements were within the law.

"Our Liaoning should enjoy in accordance with the law freedom of navigation and overflight as set by international law, and we hope all sides can respect this right of China's," she told a daily news briefing.

Influential state-run Chinese tabloid the Global Times said the exercise showed how the carrier was improving its combat capabilities and that it should now sail even further afield.

"The Chinese fleet will cruise to the Eastern Pacific sooner or later. When China's aircraft carrier fleet appears in offshore areas of the U.S. one day, it will trigger intense thinking about maritime rules," the newspaper said in an editorial.

Japan said late on Sunday it had spotted six Chinese naval vessels including the Liaoning travelling through the passage between Miyako and Okinawa and into the Pacific. Japan's top government spokesman said on Monday the voyage showed China's expanding military capability and Japan was closely monitoring it.

China's air force conducted long-range drills this month above the East and South China Seas that rattled Japan and Taiwan. China said those exercises were also routine.

Last December, the defence ministry confirmed China was building a second aircraft carrier but its launch date is unclear. The aircraft carrier programme is a state secret. Beijing could build multiple aircraft carriers over the next 15 years, the Pentagon said in a report last year.

China claims most of the South China Sea through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. Neighbours Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.

Dozens arrested in Bosaso for army prosecutor’s killing
The security forces of the northeastern semi-autonomous state of Puntland have arrested hundreds of people in connection with the murder of the region’s military prosecutor.

The prosecutor of Puntland’s military court Abdikarim Hassan Firdiye was killed in Bosasso on Sunday by two men armed with pistols who escaped on foot from the scene.

The security officers have launched an operation in parts of the city, and netted the suspects who are now held at a police custody in Bosasso for interrogation.

Al-Shabab has claimed the responsibility for the killing of the military prosecutor of Puntland, whose murder was the latest in string of assassinations in the coastal town in two weeks.

Wreckage of crashed Russian plane found in Black Sea
[FRANCE24] Russian divers on Monday found the main body of the military plane that crashed in the Black Sea with 92 people onboard, as bigwigs said technical or pilot error, not terrorism, likely caused the crash.

Following a massive search that continued overnight, Russian divers on Monday afternoon found several fragments of the plane one mile away from the coast of Sochi and about 25 metres under the sea, according to a statement released by the emergency situations ministry.

The discovery of the plane wreckage came shortly after senior Russian officials said pilot error or a technical fault ‐ not terrorism ‐ is likely to be the cause of the plane crash off the coast of Sochi.

All 84 passengers and eight crew members on the Russian military's Tu-154 plane are believed to have died when it crashed shortly after takeoff early Sunday in good weather from the southern Russian city of Sochi. The passengers included dozens of singers in Russia's world-famous military choir, nine Russian journalists and a Russian doctor known for her charity work in war zones.

LNA conducts airstrikes against BDB in Jufra base
[Libya Herald] The Libyan National Army’s (LNA) Air Force, allied to Khalifa Hafter and the House of Representatives (HoR), conducted Arclight airstrikes against the Benghazi Defence Brigade in the town of Hun, Jufra. Hun is located three hours’ drive to the west of the eastern oilfields currently under LNA control.

Libyan media photos show collateral damage to vehicles and buildings of the Tagrift base which was a former Military Police HQ.

Speaking on Libyan TV yesterday, LNA front man Ahmed Mismari said that the LNA was ready for any BDB attack and that the BDB’s actions on the eastern oilfields were carried out partly in hope that the LNA lift its siege on the Ganfuda district of Benghazi. The BDB’s allies are surrounded by the LNA in Ganfuda.

On another note, Mismari also said that soon there will be an endorsement for the LNA to enter Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
in order to protect civilians.

The attack has been well telegraphed as the BDB have been sending open signals of their intent to attack and takeover control of the eastern oilfields. Equally, the LNA has also been openly signalling its readiness to pre-empt or repel any BDB attack.

Yesterday, Presidency Council (PC) boycotting member Omar Laswad, who is from Zintan, had warned of a new looming military attack against the eastern oil terminals by the same forces that had attempted to take it over at the beginning December.

The BDB are supported by the proposed Defense Minister of the GNA Mahdi Bargathi and are deemed loyal to the Grand Mufti Sadeq Ghariani. Ibrahim Jadran as well as PC member Mijibri are also believed to be in support of the BDB.

China-Japan-Koreas
N. Korea spends 23% of GDP on Military
North Korea is the most belligerent country in the world in terms of the percentage of GDP it spends on defense. Pyongyang's military spending accounts for a whopping 23.3 percent of GDP, according to a report released by the U.S. State Department last week. Average GDP amounted to 1.66 trillion North Korean won and average annual military spending to 386 billion won from 2004 to 2014.

The figure is more than double the proportion of the next most heavily armed nation Oman (11.4 percent).

Other dictatorships featured heavily in the top 10 with Saudi Arabia in third (8.5 percent), followed by South Sudan (8.4 percent), Eritrea (6.9 percent), Israel (6.5 percent), Jordan (6.3 percent), Burma (6.1 percent), Yemen (five percent) and the UAE (4.9 percent).

The U.S. ranked 15th with 4.3 percent of a much vaster GDP, Russia 20th (3.8 percent), South Korea 47th (2.6 percent), China 68th (two percent), and Japan 136th (one percent).

But if only money is considered, the U.S. ranked first by a long margin with $701 billion, taking up 43 percent of the world's entire global military spending and about 8.6 times North Korea's $3.51 billion. South Korea ranked 11th with US$30.1 billion.

The North also ranks second in terms of the ratio of military personnel to the working population at 7.9 percent, only topped by Eritrea's 8.1 percent.

Fat Boy: bureaucracy can ruin revolutionary drive
North Korean leader Pudgy Kim Jong-un on Sunday accused party officials of sitting idly without focusing on the communist regime's sacred cause of the "juche" revolution, the North's state-run news agency said Monday.

The juche ideology has been the cornerstone of the North power base centered on Kim and his family, but it has been criticized by scholars and observers as a mechanism for sustaining the dictatorial rule of the North Korean regime, justifying its heavy-handed isolationism and oppression of North Koreans.

"Administrative bureaucracy has become the root cause of influence-peddling, corruption and other misbehaviors, which Fat Boy Kim said will ultimately undermine the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and the cause of the juche revolution," the leader said in a closing speech for the First Conference of Chairpersons of the Primary Committees of the WPK.
"You guys better watch out! You'll be standing in front of anti-aircraft guns real soon!"
The corpulent Kim, the top member of the WPK, called on the party to come up with measures to decisively combat administrative bureaucratic tendencies, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). He underscored the importance of the position and role of party officials in "promoting and building a powerful socialist country," the report said.

Syrian Kurdish council finds missing members burnt to death, accusing local group
[RUDAW.NET] Three missing members of the Kurdish National Council of Syria (KNC, ENKS) in the city of Efrin in Rojava have been found burnt to death, an official from the council, told Rudaw.

Abdulrehman Apo, member of the ENKS central committee also told Rudaw on Monday that four more people were also maimed.

Apo accused the ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD) of killing and wounding his party’s members after they had gone missing on December 19.

Hassan Khalil, the brother of Izzat Khalil, one of the victims, also revealed to Rudaw the PYD had forcefully conscripted his brother.

"Izzat together with his cousin and a neighbor named Abdo Mohammed were forcefully taken to join the PYD," he said, adding that after they refused to join the party units, "they were burned to death."

The ENKS strongly condemned the act and reiterated that the PYD was behind the killing of his members.

The ENKS is an umbrella group of several Kurdish parties in Syria who have maintained relations with the outside world including the Kurdistan Region.

As the two Kurdish parties have always been at odds, the PYD has in the past nabbed

In early December PYD supporters and their Asayish forces in Amuda city attacked ENKS buildings, destroying their facilities and burning the Kurdish flag, claimed officials from the council.

Led by their elite 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Arab Army managed to capture more than 2 km of territory around Wadi Barada, leaving the jihadist rebels with their backs against the wall after they poisoned the water supply to the civilians living in Damascus.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army are steadily advancing towards Wadi Barada in a new bid to force the jihadist rebels to surrender the remaining territory under their control.

The jihadist rebels of Harakat Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham recently rejected a reconciliation proposal that would have resulted in the surrender of Wadi Barada to the Syrian Arab Army in exchange for the transfer of jihadists to the Idlib Governorate.

Similar to their military operations in Khan al-Sheih and Darayya, the Syrian Arab Army will continue to to capture territory around Wadi Barada in order to pressure the jihadist rebels to surrender.

20 suspects detained in Ramadi

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Commander of Anbar Operations Ismail al-Mahalawi announced on Monday arresting 20 wanted persons, and seizing a large cache of weapons and rockets in Ramadi.

Mahalawi said in a press statement, “Accurate information allowed Iraqi forces from army and police to arrest 20 wanted persons, as well as discovering a large cache of weapons and rockets, during search operations in the areas of al-Thaila, al-Ta’mim, Jam’ia and al-Sherka in Ramadi.

“Sleeper cells of the Islamic State are trying to penetrate the liberated areas,” Mahalawi added. “The security situation in all the districts and areas of Anbar is stable,” Mahalawi explained.

ISIS Bad Guys get caught in airstrike

Anbar/ Kirkuk (Iraqinews.com) US-led coalition airstrikes on western Anbar and an IED blast in Kirkuk have killed several Islamic State militants, military and militia sources said Monday.

An indefinite number of IS fighters were killed west of Anbar’s town of Haditha when coalition fighter jets bombed their vehicles before a planned attack on the town, said Nazem al-Jugheifi, an intelligence officer for al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces in the province.

In Kirkuk, a security source was quoted by Alsumaria News as saying that four Islamic State members were killed and two others were wounded when an explosive device went off at al-Abbasi-Hawija road southwest of the province.

The group imposed tight measures at the scene of the blast to evacuate its casualties, according to the source, who asked not to be named.

Iraqi and coalition fighter jets regularly conduct airstrikes on areas still held by IS in the west of Anbar and Kirkuk since the emergence of the group and the proclamation of its self-styled “Islamic Caliphate’ in 2014.

Iraqi and American generals estimate the number of IS militants killed since October by nearly 4000 since the start of a major operation to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and the group’s last bastion in the country.

Despite their best efforts to overwhelm the Syrian Arab Army's units by sheer force and numbers, the Islamic State turbans were ultimately repelled after a violent 4 hour battle on Monday afternoon.

According to a military source at the T-4 Airport, the Syrian Arab Army killed more than 25 Islamic State bandidos murderous Moslems during Monday's battle, while also destroying at least 3 armored vehicles that were armed with anti-aircraft machine guns.

Over the last two weeks, the Islamic State has suffered an estimated 225 casualties at the T-4 Airport, while also failing to make any significant gains in that time frame.

Since 2014, violence surged Across Iraq, with the Islamic State militants taking over wide areas of the country to establish a so-called “Islamic Caliphate”. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq said Sunday that violence in Iraq during 2016 left more than 12000 dead and more than 14000 wounded. According to the organization, those dead included 6.492 civilians and 5.546 military personnel. Deaths and injuries occurred in Baghdad, Salahuddin, Nineveh, Kirkuk, Anbar and Diyala, UNAMI said, adding that they occurred during military operations against Islamic State as well as in shootings, bombings and suicide attacks.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the Monday blasts, but Some observers believe Islamic State militants have tended to carry out violent attacks in Baghdad and other provinces to divert attention from Mosul, where they struggle to defend their last bastion in Iraq against advancing Iraqi government and popular forces.

The elders of Zabul said the local residents in Khak-e-Afghan and Nawbahar districts have noted movements of the two groups to establish and strengthen their presence.

The Ghazni representatives also said the ISIS loyalists and Taliban bully boyz have started to expand their foothold in Nawa district.

According to the Office of the Chief Executive, the elders of Zabul have said thousands of ISIS gunnies have arrived in Khak-e-Afghan district.

The ISIS gunnies have reportedly arrived with their families and are fully equipped with the area turning into an entry point for the foreign Death Eaters.

The elders of the two provinces said an operation should be launched soon to target the gunnies during the winter season before they manage to gain a prominent foothold.

'We don't want them back': Tunisians protest against returning jihadi fighters
Hundreds of people gathered outside Tunisia's parliament to protest against letting jihadists who fought overseas to return to the country. Protesters in Tunis chanted 'no to freedom for terrorist groups' while others held placards saying 'lock the door to terrorism' and 'no tolerance, no return'.

Organisers said 1,500 people attended the rally.

It was held on the same day authorities said they had tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
three alleged jihadists connected to the suspected Berlin Christmas market attacker, Tunisian Anis Amri.

Protestors slammed Rached Ghannouchi, head of the Islamist Ennahda party, who has in the past supported the idea of allowing Tunisian jihadists who 'repent' and renounce violence to return home.

President Beji Caid Essebsi said earlier this month that Tunisia would refuse to pardon Tunisians who fight for jihadist organizations.

'Many of them want to return, and we can't prevent a Tunisian from returning to his country,' he said. 'But we will be vigilant.'

Following a storm of criticism in the press and on social media, on December 15 he told Tunisian local television that 'we will not be indulgent with the terrorists'.

More than 5,000 Tunisians are fighting for jihadist groups abroad, mainly in Iraq, Syria or neighbouring Libya, according to a UN working group on mercenaries.

On Friday evening, the country's Interior Minister Hedi Majdoub told parliament 800 Tunisian nationals who had fought for bully boy groups abroad had since returned to the country.

Since its 2011 revolution Tunisia has faced repeated jihadist attacks, killing more than 100 soldiers and coppers, as well as about 20 civilians and 59 foreign tourists, according to official figures.

Surveillance video confirms Berlin attacker fled to Italy via Lyon
[FRANCE24] Surveillance footage confirms that Anis Amri, the suspected Berlin truck attacker bumped off by Italian police, transited through the French city of Lyon by train, a source close to the investigation said on Monday.

"A man corresponding to the killer was spotted on the afternoon of Thursday, December 22, on a platform at the (Lyon-Part-Dieu) station wearing a cap and backpack," the source said, confirming earlier media reports. "He appears alone in these images."

The source said Sherlocks are still trying to determine how Amri, 24, was able to leave the German capital and pass through La Belle France, eventually winding up in Italia.

He was the focus of a four-day Europe-wide manhunt before being rubbed out by police in Milan after firing at officers.

Tracking Amri and the path of the truck was thought to have been complicated by the relative scarcity of security cameras in public places in Germany. Europe's lack of border controls also posed challenges to apprehending him.

Kuwait Jails Filipina for Joining IS Jihadists
[AnNahar] A Kuwaiti court on Monday sentenced a Filipino woman to 10 years in jail after convicting her of joining the Islamic State

jihadist group and plotting attacks.

The ruling, which is not final, also calls for deporting the 32-year old after serving her term.

The woman was tossed in the slammer
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in August, two months after arriving in the oil-rich Gulf state to work as a domestic helper.

At the time, the interior ministry said she had confessed to being a member of the Islamic State group and was plotting terrorist attacks in the emirate.

The woman told interrogators that her husband was an active fighter with IS in Libya and he had asked her to come to Kuwait from the Philippines as a domestic helper, according to the ministry.

An IS-affiliated group in the Philippines has conduced a string of bombings as well as kidnappings for ransom of foreign tourists and Christian missionaries in the country.

Kuwaiti courts have sentenced to various jail terms a number of members, sympathisers and financiers of the IS group.

In October, Kuwait police arrested an Egyptian driver suspected of being a member of the IS, after he rammed a garbage truck into a pick-up carrying five Americans.

Authorities in July said they had dismantled three IS cells plotting attacks, including a suicide kaboom against a Shiite mosque and against an interior ministry target.

An IS-linked jacket wallah killed 26 worshippers in June last year when he went kaboom! in a mosque of Kuwait's Shiite minority, in the worst such attack in the Gulf state's history.

fighters have stormed the closed Al Jazeera Network bureau in the capital Sanaa and stolen the remaining equipment.

Sunday's raid came just hours after the Arabic channel broadcast a documentary film titled Stolen Weapons in Yemen, discussing the group's looting of arms.

"Eye witnesses said that two cars carrying more than 10 fighters raided the office and began looting what has been left of furniture, desks and TV screens," Saeed Thabit, head of Al Jazeera's office in Yemen, said in an Arabic statement on his Facebook page.

The film investigates how Houthi rebels managed to obtain heavy weaponry, where they store the arms as well as the quantity and types of arms they have been using.

Two years ago, the office witnessed a similar attack in which the Al Jazeera team was assaulted and received death threats.

In 2015, Houthi fighters kidnapped an Al Jazeera broadcast engineer and a security guard in Sanaa.

Cuba faces 'deep problems' in 2017
[AyPee] President Compañero Raul Castro
...Fidel's little brother...
faces what could be his toughest year since he took power in 2006. 2017 brings a possible economic recession and a U.S. president-elect who has promised to undo Obama's normalization unless the Cuban government makes new concessions on civil rights. Resistance to pressure from Washington is a founding principle for the Cuban communist system, making domestic concessions in exchange for continued detente a virtual impossibility.

"People expected that after Obama came there would be changes in the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba but that we could keep the best of what we have, the benefits for the people," Alex Romero, a 42-year-old state photography shop employee said. "Trump's not going to be able to get what he wants, another type of Cuba. If the world's number one power takes us on, 2017 is going to be really bad for us."

Cuba publishes few credible economic statistics, but experts expect the country to end this year with gross domestic product growth of 1 percent or less. It maintained a rate close to 3 percent from 2011-2015. One bright spot is tourism, booming since Obama and Castro's detente announcement set off a surge in overall visitor numbers.

The slowness of macroeconomic growth despite a surge of interest in foreign investment and the greatest tourism boom in decades attests to both long-term mismanagement of the Cuban economy and the depth of the crisis in other sectors, particularly aid from Venezuelan in the form of deeply subsidized oil. Venezuela was also the prime destination alongside Brazil for Cuban doctors and other professionals whose salaries go directly to the Cuban government; another vital source of hard currency believed to be slackening. Nickel, another of Cuba's main exports, has seen a sharp price drop this year.

The revenue drop may be creating a vicious cycle for Cuba's state-run industries. Experts say cutbacks in imported industrial inputs this year will lead to lower productivity in Cuba's few domestic industries in 2017 and make zero growth or recession highly likely.

The government cut back summer working hours and gas rations for state-owned vehicles and has so far avoided any sustained power outages. But a crackdown on black-market gasoline sales to taxi drivers led to increased prices, squeezing many Cubans already struggling to get by. Many Cubans say, however, that worsening conditions could drive them to rally around the government rather than against it.

One cushion will be remittances from Cuban expatriates in the United States and other countries, estimated by some experts to be in excess of $3 billion a year and rising as Cubans flood to the United States in fear that they may soon lose special immigration privileges. Another bright spot is Cuba's growing private sector, particularly businesses boosted by increased demand from tourists.

While rising food prices are a constant problem for ordinary Cubans, many of those investing in food production are finding success.

Fernando Funes, owner of a farm that supplies vegetables to about 30 private restaurants in Havana, most with tourist clienteles, has nearly doubled his workforce from 12 to 20 in recent years, all earning about $25 a week.

"We have a lot more opportunities to start projects these days," Funes said. "Personally I'm optimistic about 2017."

#2  One of the first things I learned about politics was this:

objective poverty is not a problem; poverty relative to expectations is the problem. A country with expectations rising faster than results is set up for catastrophe if the results trend dips much at all.

Jarablus residents protest presence of Turkish-backed forces
[ALMASDARNEWS] Pro-opposition source Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that the residents of Jarablus have been protesting in demand that Turkish-backed Euphrates Shield jihadists leave the city.

Tensions have spiraled after a fighter from Faylaq al-Sham (Sham Legion) killed a civilian and maimed his child.

"Tension still prevails in Jarabulus city in the northeast of Aleppo province at the western banks of Euphrates River, which is controlled by the "Euphrates Shield" forces since the 24th of August 2016. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights was aware that the tension came after a fighter of the rebel and Islamic factions of the "Euphrates Shield" operation backed by Turkish forces and warplanes killed a young man in Jarabulus city. An altercation occurred between the young man and the fighter, and that is when the fighter shot, which killed the young man and maimed one of his children."

The SOHR statement said there had been demonstrations on 24 and 25 December with people burning tyres and demanding that the fighters leave the city and hand over administration to civil committees and local councils.

It was reported that the protestors called for the local factions to immediately leave the city; the prevention of any fighter from entering into the city while carrying arms and wearing uniform; the local court and the civil council handling the regulation of affairs in the city instead of the local factions; the leadership of the Euphrates Shield should issue order to the factions to leave the city.

Woman executed for adultery in Kirkuk

[ARA News] Kirkuk – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Sunday stoned an Iraqi woman to death on charges of committing adultery, local sources reported.

The ISIS-led Islamic Police, also known as Diwan al-Hisba, detained a woman in al-Riyad District in southwestern Kirkuk Governorate, accusing her of committing adultery.

Shortly after the arrest, the Sharia Court decided to stone the 32-year-old woman to death in public, without any investigation into the case.

“Hundreds of people, including children, gathered at al-Riyad’s central square to witness the execution of the woman,” eyewitnesses told ARA News.

ISIS jihadists also forced a number of civilians to participate in stoning the victim.

The group called on people to take part in the execution, saying that the woman deserved death “for violating the Islamic Sharia through committing adultery”.

The Islamic State’s Media Office in southern Kirkuk has also released footages showing the brutal execution.

The radical group has earlier executed dozens of women on adultery charges.

21 executed while leaving Aleppo

[al-Manar] Syrian authorities said on Monday that Takfiri terrorists executed 21 civilians, including women and children, at close range as they quit second city Aleppo last week.

The bodies were found in two neighborhoods in east Aleppo, official news agency SANA said late Sunday.

The head of Aleppo’s forensic unit Zaher Hajjo told SANA that “21 corpses of civilian victims, including five children and four women, killed by terrorist groups” were examined.

“The bodies were found in prisons run by the terrorist groups in Sukkari and al-Kalasseh, and they were found to have been executed by gunshot at very close range,” Hajjo was quoted as saying.

Under a landmark deal brokered by regime ally Russia and militants’ backer Turkey, 35,000 terrorists and civilians left east Aleppo last week.

Also on Monday, the Russian defense ministry said “dozens of Syrians” were summarily executed in east Aleppo by militants”.

“Mass graves containing dozens of Syrians who were summarily executed and subjected to savage torture have been discovered,” spokesman Igor Konachenkov said, according to Russian agencies.

Mass graves found in Aleppo

[al-Manar] Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that mass graves of torture victims have been uncovered in Aleppo, adding that the so-called “moderate opposition” mined nearly everything in the eastern neighborhoods of the liberated city.

Mass graves of torture victims have been uncovered in liberated Aleppo, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Monday.

“Mass burial sites of many dozens [of Syrians], who had been subjected to brutal torture and [then] murdered, have been found,” ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

“In many cases, body parts are missing; most victims had been shot in the head. And this, it seems, is only the beginning.”

Konashenkov said that the instances are being recorded as serious war crimes and will be given maximum publicity “so that European backers of the so-called opposition in London and Paris are well aware of who their wards actually are.”

Konashenkov further revealed that militants of the “moderate opposition” mined in eastern Aleppo nearly everything: toys, streets, entrances to premises, cars and motorcycles. “Literally everything, for which there was enough time and ammunition, was mined: the streets, entrances to premises, vehicles, motorcycles lying on roads, and even children’s toys,” Konashenkov said.

He added that seven large ammunition depots, enough to arm several infantry battalions, were discovered in Aleppo.

On December 22, the Syrian government forces assumed full control of Aleppo as the last convoy with militants left the embattled city. Syrian government forces have been fighting against multiple opposition and terrorist groups, including ISIL and Fatah al Sham, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, or Nusra Front.

ISIS executes 30 in al-Bab

[al-Manar] At least 30 civilians have been killed in an attack by ISIL Takfiri group in the northern Syrian town of Al Bab, he Turkish military said in a statement on Monday.

The attack was carried out on Sunday as the civilians’ attempted to flee the ISIL-held town, the Daily Sabah publication cited the Turkish military as saying.

Turkey-bcked militants in Syria and the Turkish army have laid siege to the ISIL-held town for weeks under the “Euphrates Shield” operation launched by Turkey nearly four months ago to sweep the Takfiri insurgents and Kurdish fighters from its Syrian border.

India Tests Long-Range, Ballistic Nuclear-Capable Missile
India successfully test-fired its longest range nuclear-capable missile, confirming its status in the select group of nations with weapons that can travel from one continent to another.

Agni-V, with a range of more than 5,000 kilometers (3,107 miles), completed its final firing test at the Defence Research and Development Organization’s range on Dr. Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of the eastern state of Odisha on Monday.

"This was the fourth test of Agni-5 missile and the second one from a canister on a Road Mobile Launcher," the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. "All the four missions have been successful."

India’s president, Pranab Mukherjee, confirmed the launch with a tweet. "Congratulations DRDO for successfully test firing Agni V. It will enhance our strategic and deterrence capabilities." he wrote. Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon followed with his own tweet: "It will add tremendous strength to our strategic defense."

India’s space and missile programs, along with economic growth of more than 7 percent and a bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, is part of the country’s efforts to build up its defense capabilities and establish itself as a world power. India’s current range of missiles are mostly intended for confrontation with neighboring rivals China and Pakistan.

The locally-developed Agni-V is capable of reaching as far as Beijing, IANS reported in July. India joined a group including the U.S., Russia, China, France and the U.K that have intercontinental ballistic missiles when it first test-fired Agni-V in 2012.

China-Japan-Koreas
N. Korea may go all-out to idolize Fat Boy in 2017
North Korea may go all-out next year to idolize its corpulent young leader Kim Jong-un as the regime tries to solidify his leadership and make it as powerful as those of his predecessors, a government report said Monday.

"On the occasions of major political events, (North Korea) is expected to mobilize the party, military and cabinet to idolize Kim on a grand scale," the Ministry of Unification said in a forecast on the North Korean regime in the new year.

"Starting from the Mt. Baekdu hero rally slated for August, the North may try to elevate the status of Kim Jong-un to that of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il in a bid to justify power succession and solidify the regime's unity," the ministry said, referring to the two previous leaders.
I think putting all three of the murderous bastards on the same pedestal is appropriate...
Earlier this year, the North announced the hosting of an international event for 2017 to highlight the country's liberation from Japanese colonial rule (1910-45) and the nation-building efforts by its late leaders.

A host of other anniversaries will also be utilized for the idolization efforts, including the 105th birthday of Kim Il-sung, the 75th birthday of Kim Jong-il, the 85th anniversary of the North Korean military's founding and the 5th year since Kim Jong-un coming to power, which all fall in 2017, according to the ministry.

On the military front, North Korea will continue to build up its nuclear and missile capabilities next year, the ministry said, predicting that Pyongyang would conduct tests of submarine-launched ballistic missiles, intercontinental ballistic missiles and missiles that can carry mock nuclear warheads.

In the new year, the regime may also seek to obtain the status of a nuclear power state, the ministry forecast showed.

"Vis-a-vis the U.S., the country is likely to repeat its demand to discard its hostile policy toward Pyongyang, but at the same time it could explore the possibilities of dialogue and fence-mending (with Washington)," the ministry said.

In addition, the reclusive regime may seek to mend its relations with China and Russia in order to break free of the international isolation, it also said.

Meanwhile, the ongoing international sanctions are expected to force the regime to resort to self-sufficiency in regards to its economic policies, including launching new national campaigns to promote bark soup hard work, the report also said.

Trump lacks plan on N. Korea: U.S. expert
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump appears to lack a plan on how to deal with North Korea even though his administration is set to take off in less than a month, a U.S. expert said Sunday.
Yup, that's it. We're doomed because Trump doesn't have a plan to deal with an expert's pet peeve. You can see it coming. Might as well fold up shop now...
Bonnie Glaser, senior adviser for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), also said in an interview with CBS television that the Trump foreign policy team doesn't seem to have a full strategy yet on China.

North Korea is "not an issue that Trump knows a lot about," Glaser said, adding that the concern for the United States is that the North Koreans could pose an existential threat to the homeland if they can make a nuclear warhead that can potentially reach U.S. territory.

"Do we have a strategy that focuses on defense? Do we take a much more aggressive posture against North Korea?" Glaser said, wondering about Trump's plan. "Some people are raising the possibility of a pre-emptive strike on a missile, if it's on a launch pad, because we don't know what's atop that missile, whether it's a satellite or a nuclear warhead.

"There may be some discussions about whether we really need to try to cut off trade and harm North Korea's economy, go beyond sanctions that are really focused on depriving North Korea of weapons of mass destruction," she said.

Most American experts
None of whom are named...
agree that North Korea will be one of the biggest problems facing the Trump administration as the communist nation stepped up its development of a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the continental U.S.

Outgoing President Barack Obama also reportedly warned Trump of the dangers the North poses to the U.S. when the two met at the White House last month.
After spending eight years of doing largely nothing...
During the election campaign, Trump said he would pressure China to exercise its influence over North Korea as the main food and energy provider to rein in the regime in Pyongyang, saying the North is basically China's problem to fix.

But he also expressed a willingness to hold direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over "hamburgers," a remark seen as aimed at underscoring the point he's a great negotiator. However, the remark invited huge criticism that such a meeting would only bolster the North's dictator.
Not sure how: the fat bastard is about as wedged into his seat as is possible to be.
Earlier this month, Trump strongly criticized China for "not helping us at all with North Korea" when "China could solve that problem." He even questioned why the U.S. should stick to the policy of recognizing only China, not Taiwan, when Beijing is uncooperative over the North and engages in unfair trade practices.
That doesn't sound like Trump 'bolstering' Pudgy's image...
"It looks to me like Trump is trying to keep China off balance, to try and signal that he's not necessarily going to conduct business as usual in the same way that it has been conducted over the last eight years under Obama and that he thinks it can appear that he can gain some leverage by signaling a willingness to confront China," Glaser said.

Europe
Balkan countries illegally push back migrants: UNHCR
[AlAhram] Illegal deportations of migrants colonists seeking to reach western Europe along the so-called Balkans route have been on the rise, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) warned Monday.

Some 1,000 people from the Middle East, Asia and Africa "were expelled in November alone along the Balkans route... more than before", the UNHCR spokeswoman in Serbia, Mirjana Milenkovska, told AFP.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants colonists took the Balkans route through Macedonia and Serbia, Croatia and Hungary as they tried to reach western Europe from Greece before it was largely shut down in March.

Non-governmental human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
organizations and activists also warned that an increasing number of legally-registered migrants colonists were being "illegally deported" from Serbia to Bulgaria and Macedonia.

On December 17 "a seven-member Syrian family, including a two-year old child, 16-year old girl and two women almost froze after being left in a forest in -11 Celsius degrees (12.2 Fahrenheit) to walk towards Bulgaria some one kilometre (half a mile) away," an activist said.

"The family was registered in Belgrade and on its way to a refugee centre, when they were taken off the bus by a police or army unit that tore their documents," said Gordan Paunovic of the Info Park group that provides help to refugees.

They were eventually rescued by a regular police officer from a nearby town who was alerted by activists, Paunovic said.

The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) that represents the family said that the bus driver confirmed the information.

Serbian Defence Minister Zoran Djordjevic denied army involvement in the incident.

Some 7,000 migrants colonists are currently in Serbia. Most are lodged in 13 official reception centres, while some 1,000 are sleeping rough in downtown Belgrade, Milenkovska said.

Some 109 people were reportedly deported in November to Macedonia from Serbia's border migrant transit centre at Presevo.

"They all came back to Belgrade and told us the same story: they were awakened at 4 am, put in a police van and than driven to a field in the middle of a forest on the border with Macedonia," Paunovic said.

Members of Macedonian Youth Lawyers Association (MYLA), who provide legal help to migrants colonists in Macedonia, also "have recorded cases of persons who have been pushed back to Macedonia, although they had asylum papers from Serbia."

Iraq
Two arrested in bombing of Iranian Kurdish party, perpetrator on the run
[RUDAW.NET] Two suspects in the Koya bombings that targeted the headquarters of a Kurdish armed party of Iranian Kurdistan, killing seven, have been incarcerated
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
, Kurdish security announced Monday. The main perpetrator is still on the run.

"The security agency was able to arrest two suspects on suspicion of being involved in the crime," reads a statement from the Kurdistan Region's Asayesh released on Monday. The security agency "has been able to identify the main perpetrator who is on the run now."

The Asayesh had formed a high level committee, coordinating with security agencies of several cities including Erbil and Sulaimani to investigate the twin bombings in Koya.

Following up on solid leads, the security committee confiscated materials belonging to the main perpetrator and have intensified their efforts to arrest those responsible for the bombing that are still on the lam.

Last Tuesday, two bombs targeted the headquarters of the Iranian Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK, KDP-I), known locally as HDK, killing five of its Peshmerga fighters, two members of the Kurdish security forces, and wounding three others in Koya, 70 kilometres east of Erbil.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) described the attack an act of terror.

"We reiterate that we will exhaust all the efforts to bring those responsible for this terrorist act to justice," the KRG said in a statement last Wednesday. "We will declare to those behind this terrorist crime that every effort or plot against our nation will certainly fail."

The HDK also described the attack as terrorism and have blamed Tehran. A bigwig from the party told Rudaw they had "little doubt" about Iran's involvement in the assault.

Ismail Sharafi said investigations had started and evidence pointed to the neighboring Islamic Theocratic Republic.

"We cannot at this moment identify the perpetrators of these bloody attacks, but such actions that are carried out against the PDK leave little doubt about the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran's involvement as a terrorist regime in the region," Sharafi told Rudaw in the days after the attack.

Sharafi also added that Tehran could have funded the attack instead of being directly involved.

The twin bombings took place only minutes apart as party members were marking the birthday of their late leader Abdulrahman Ghassemloo who was assassinated in Vienna, Austria, in 1989. An Austrian court has officially accused Iranian agents of the killing which had a long-lasting impact on HDK's structures and its armed struggle for self-rule against the Islamic Theocratic Republic.

Eyewitnesses told Rudaw the second blast, which appeared to have been more powerful, happened when people rushed to the site of the first attack trying to help the victims.

In the early 1990s, the HDK ended all its military campaigns against the Iranian army largely due to arrangements between Tehran and the Kurdistan Region, which prohibited attacks on Iran from the Kurdish-controlled territories in Iraq.

Tuesday’s attacks happened only months after Kurdistan Region officials directly called on Tehran to resume negotiations with the HDK.

Many pundits have speculated that the conflict between the Iranian government and the Kurds is likely to become bloodier in one of the few parts of the Middle East which has so far been spared the regional upheaval that followed the so-called Arab Spring of six years ago.

Russian jets carry out airstrikes to aid Turkish Army in Aleppo’s Al-Bab
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Air Force carried out its first Arclight airstrikes over the key city of al-Bab on Sunday, marking the first time during this war that their aircraft have directly aided the Turkish Army.

According to a military source at the Kuweires Airport, a group of Russian Su-24 and Su-34 fighters jets carried out Arclight airstrikes over al-Bab in east Aleppo, resulting in the destruction of several mechanisms that belonged to the so-called "Islamic State

of Iraq and al-Sham" (ISIS).

Despite Russian air assistance on Sunday, the Turkish Army was unable to maintain control over the al-Farouq Hospital and Jabal al-Aqil after the Islamic State bandidos holy warriors scored a direct hit with their VBIED (vehicle borne improvised bomb).

The Russian and Turkish governments are currently on good terms for the first time in nearly a year, putting an end to the differences they had over the downing of the Su-24 fighter jet in northern Latakia last year.

ISIS pushes back against Turkish Army to reclaim territory in Aleppo’s Al-Bab

of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) pushed back against the Turkish Armed Forces on Sunday, seizing several sites near the western outskirts of al-Bab City in eastern Aleppo.

ISIS began the counter-assault during the wee hours on Sunday, sending a jacket wallah to target the Turkish Army's defenses near the al-Farouq Hospital in western al-Bab.

The suicide kaboom proved successful for the terrorist group, as ISIS was able to overrun the Turkish Army's positions and regain control of the al-Farouq Hospital before noon on Sunday.

Following the capture of the al-Farouq Hospital, the Islamic State faceless myrmidons stormed Jabal Aqil, resulting in another series of intense firefights with the Turkish Army.

The Islamic State bully boyz were once again successful in their attack, seizing Jabal Aqil after the Turkish Army retreated west of this mountaintop in eastern Aleppo.

ISIS has officially repelled the Turkish Army's advance at least four times in the last ten days in western al-Bab.

Turkey urges US to back al-Bab operation

[Hurriyet] Ankara has criticized international coalition forces for not doing enough to support Turkey in its offensive on al-Bab against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), calling especially for U.S. backing for the operation.

“These circles, which always level criticism at Turkey on ISIL, are not giving the necessary support for our struggle against ISIL in Azez, Jarablus, Dabiq and al-Bab. This is unacceptable,” presidential spokesperson İbrahim Kalın told reporters on Dec. 26.

“We would like to express once more that the international coalition should make a special commitment particularly to provide air support. We are coordinating with the international coalition. It is unacceptable that air support is not provided without a legitimate reason,” he said.

“Regardless of mobilization by [ISIL], Turkey will continue in its determination in this regard, and this operation will be completed,” Kalın said.

Kalın made the comments in reply to media reports that around 700 ISIL suicide bombers had moved from Raqqa to al-Bab.

In the past week, clashes and operations around al-Bab had gained intensity, he said, emphasizing that the Turkish Armed Forces had showed great sensitivity to avoid civilian casualties.

Some 1,900 square kilometers in northern Syria have been cleared of ISIL as part of the Operation Euphrates Shield, the spokesperson said. During the past week, hundreds of ISIL targets have been eliminated, and 226 ISIL militants have been killed, Kalın stated.

Turkish troops execute 1,300 crazed jihadists in brutal battles

[EXPRESS.CO.UK] TURKISH soldiers have killed hundreds more Islamic State jihadis as they sweep through al-Bab in northern Syria, in a major blow to the fanatical terror regime. Officials in Ankara said 226 ISIS militants had been "neutralised" in the latest operations conducted near the northern Syrian town.

Turkey-backed Syrian rebels, supported by the Turkish military, have been laying siege to the town for weeks.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman reported on Monday the anti-ISIS coalition was making progress in al-Bab, which has been held by ISIS since 2013. He added that President Erdogan was calling on the US and its allies to provide air support to the operation in the Syrian city.

Ibrahim Kalin told a news conference in the Turkish capital: “The international coalition must carry out its duties regarding aerial support to the battle we are fighting in al-Bab.

“Not giving the necessary support is unacceptable.”

Al-Bab had been surrounded by Turkish and Free Syrian Army forces since last week and troops have penetrated the centre of the city.

The latest jihadi deaths brings the total number of ISIS fighters in al-Bab killed by Turkey to around 1,300. More than 1,000 jihadis have already been killed in earlier fighting.

However Turkish troops have also come up against fierce resistance, and were forced to withdraw from the al-Bab hospital on December 22. ISIS even managed to capture two battle tanks, an all-terrain vehicle, a bulldozer and weapons from the fleeing forces.

The ISIS-affiliated Amaq news agency claimed more than 70 Turkish soldiers had been killed. ISIS released a video showing two Turkish fighters being burnt alive following clashes outside al-Bab.

The city is located half way between Aleppo and Manbij in an area of Syria that has seen some of the fiercest fighting during the six-year war. In 2004 it had a population of more than 60,000 but that has dwindled as the civil war took its toll on the country's civilian population.

Many former al-Bab residents are now living in Turkey or elsewhere in Europe.

The city fell to ISIS in 2013 but after nearby Manbij was reclaimed from the terrorist group in August this year al-Bab became next on the anti-ISIS coalition's hit-list.

Civilians killed by barrel bombs near Damascus
[Al Jazeera] At least 14 civilians have been killed and several others maimed in a series of barrel-kabooms on rebel-held areas near Damascus, Al Jazeera has learnt.

Syrian government air strikes targeted the town of Wadi Barada, northwest of the capital, on Monday, injuring dozens of people, including several children, activists told Al Jazeera.

According to videos posted on social media by opposition groups, the Syrian government intensified its assault on the town.

The White Helmets, an all-volunteer rescue group, said a number of people were trapped under the rubble following the heavy bombardment.

Barrel bombs are crude, unguided bombs used by Syrian government forces that have been blamed for thousands of civilian deaths.

They are typically constructed from large oil drums and filled with explosives, nails and scrap metal.

Third day of offensive

Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Gaziantep, on the Turkish side of the border with Syria, said the government was in the third day of an offensive against Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...

On Friday, the Syrian army and the Lebanese gang Hezbollah launched an operation to retake Wadi Barada, after accusing the rebels of contaminating drinking water at a spring with diesel.

The Wadi Barada valley, a mountainous area near the Lebanese border, has been under siege since 2014 with food, water and electricity all in short supply.

Gunmen Kill Six in Northern Nigeria
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Six people have been killed in northern Nigeria’s Kaduna state, with herdsmen suspected of committing the attack in the restive region, a former politician and an official said Monday.

A long-running battle over land and grazing rights has left hundreds dead in central and northern Nigeria.

The violence occurred between Saturday and Sunday in Goska, near Kafanchan, despite a 24-hour curfew following incessant festivities between herdsmen and local farmers, they said.

"We lost six people, including my 17-year-old daughter who was one year to her graduation from secondary school," said Gideon Morik, a former member of the state house of assembly.

"The gunnies we suspect to be Fulani herdsmen attacked the village late Saturday into Sunday," he said, adding that the attackers maimed many people and destroyed houses before fleeing.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai condemned the attack in a statement on Monday, vowing to find the killers.

President Muhammadu Buhari has proposed setting up grazing reserves to address disputes.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian man shot in foot during clash with troops near Nablus
[IsraelTimes] Fighting comes as some 1,500 visit Joseph’s Tomb under heavy guard in West Bank city.

Israeli security forces shot a man on Monday morning during festivities that erupted as some 1,500 Jewish worshipers visited a shrine in the West Bank city of Nablus, Paleostinian media reported.

Rioters burned tires and threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at security forces protecting the pilgrims, whose monthly visits to the site believed to be the tomb of the biblical Joseph, one of the sons of the Patriarch Jacob, are often accompanied by disturbances, according to the reports.

The clash occurred near the Balata refugee camp on the outskirts of Nablus.

According to the Ma’an Paleostinian news agency, Mahdi Dweiket, 20, was shot in the foot and taken to a local hospital.

Several others suffered from the effects of tear gas canisters fired by IDF soldiers during the riot.

The IDF spokesperson said the army knew of one man lightly injured.

"Forces identified a Paleostinian hurling a Molotov cocktail and in response to the threat fired toward him," the IDF said in a statement. "The Paleostinian was lightly injured and evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment."

Nablus, which is located within the Paleostinian Authority-controlled territory of the West Bank known as Area A, is off-limits to Israeli civilians.

In order to visit the shrine, located on the east side of the city near the Balata refugee camp, Jewish worshipers are escorted under heavy guard by the Israel Defense Forces in organized trips conducted each month.

The visits are often met by rock-throwing and other low-level violence, though fierce festivities have broken out around the pilgrimages as well.

Last month, troops escorted some 800 worshipers to Joseph’s Tomb.

As with nearly every visit, local residents threw rocks at the soldiers guarding the religious Jews before the troops repelled the rioters with nonlethal means. There were no reports of serious injuries or damage on either side.

NAP made slow progress in blocking funding to terrorists: Interior Ministry
[DAWN] The Ministry of Interior on Monday released a progress report on the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) in 2016.

In a report issued by the ministry, it conceded that NAP was unable to effectively block financial support for gunnies and terrorist organizations.

The report had been authorised by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, who faces increasing criticism for the government's inaction in curbing militancy in the country.

Also Read: Nisar responds to critics: 'I told PM Nawaz I can resign but he declined'

The report further stated that NAP had been unable to stop the re-emergence of 'proscribed organizations' under new names.

It further added that progress has been slow in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
and that 'political reconciliation' with all the stakeholders in the province has yet to be achieved.

However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
the report noted that terrorism in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
decreased by 80 per cent, whereas a significant decrease was also seen in incidents of robberies, murders and murder in the city.

A recent report issued by a judicial commission comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court had criticised the interior minister for meeting with the heads of some banned groups and 'acceding' to their demands.

After the commission's report was made public, Nisar had addressed a presser and said that he has been "bashed" about his political and personal conduct and that he will tackle that criticism in the coming days.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News
10 ISIS Bad Guys die in airstrikes in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Ten Islamic State militants were killed as US-led coalition air forces bombarded their locations east of Mosul, the Iraqi defense ministry said as operations against the extremist group resumes after nearly a week of recess.

The strikes destroyed four IS command quarters as well as 14 cannons, the ministry said, but did not specify the exact whereabouts of those targets. A security source told Shafaaq News that other strikes by coalition jets destroyed nine mortar launchers belonging to the group at al-Baath district.

The ministry reported other airstrikes by its own fighter jets in Hammam al-Alil district, saying they destroyed several military equipment and killed an indefinite number of militants.

Iraqi government forces, backed by al-Hashd al-Shaabi and US-led air forces, launched a wide-scale military campaign mid October to retake Mosul, IS’s last major stronghold in Iraq. While government forces fight on the eastern shore of the Tigris River, recapturing almost 40 districts out of nearly 60 since then, al-Hashd al-Shaabi militia has been fighting the group in the western region, claiming to have isolated IS’s hideouts there from both Syria and Iraq.

As admitted by military media, progress in battles at the easte slowed down over the past week. That is reportedly due to bad weather conditions and the density of the targeted districts.
The situation in Mosul has forced at least 125000 people to flee to refugee camps, with nearly one million still stranded in the battlefield.

New offensive to begin soon

(Reuters) Iraqi forces will resume their push against Islamic State inside Mosul in the coming days, a U.S. battlefield commander said, in a new phase of the two-month-old operation that will see American troops deployed closer to the front line in the city.

The battle for Mosul, involving 100,000 Iraqi troops, members of the Kurdish security forces and Shi’ite militiamen, is the biggest ground operation in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003. The upcoming phase appears likely to give American troops their biggest combat role since they fulfilled President Barack Obama’s pledge to withdraw from Iraq in 2011.

Elite Iraqi soldiers have retaken a quarter of Mosul, the jihadists’ last major stronghold in Iraq, but their advance has been slow and punishing. They entered a planned “operational refit” this month, the first significant pause of the campaign.

A heavily armoured unit of several thousand federal police was redeployed from the southern outskirts two weeks ago to reinforce the eastern front after army units advised by the Americans suffered heavy losses in an Islamic State counter-attack.

U.S. advisers, part of an international coalition that has conducted thousands of air strikes and trained tens of thousands of Iraqi ground troops, will work directly with those forces and an elite Interior Ministry strike force.

“Right now we’re staging really for the next phase of the attack as we start the penetration into the interior of east Mosul,” Lieutenant Colonel Stuart James, commander of a combat arms battalion assisting Iraqi security forces on the southeastern front, said in a Reuters interview late on Sunday.

“So right now, positioning forces and positioning men and equipment into the interior of east Mosul… it’s going to happen in the next several days.”

That will put U.S. troops inside of Mosul proper and at greater risk, though James said the danger level was still characterized as “moderate”. Three U.S. servicemen have been killed in northern Iraq in the past 15 months.

James, speaking from an austere outpost east of Mosul where several hundred U.S. troops are stationed, said the pace of the upcoming phase on the eastern side would depend on resistance from Islamic State, also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh.

“If we achieve great success on the first day and we gain momentum, then it may go very quickly. If Daesh fights very hard the first day and we run into a roadblock and we have to go back and go OK that was not the correct point of penetration, it may take longer,” he said.

INTEGRATION
Further integration with the Iraqi troops – to what commanders described as an unprecedented level for conventional U.S. forces – will help synchronize surveillance, air support and force movement, according to James.

“It increases our situational understanding. The man on the ground knows what’s going on best,” he said. “It’s just better when they’re on the ground talking to each other and saying, ‘Hey, have you looked at that area over there? That’s decisive terrain. Have you thought about putting forces there?'”

Mosul, the largest city held by Islamic State anywhere across its once vast territorial holdings in Iraq and neighboring Syria, has been held by the group since its fighters drove the U.S.-trained army out in June 2014.

Its fall would probably end Islamic State’s ambition to rule over millions of people in a self-styled caliphate, but the fighters could still mount a traditional insurgency in Iraq, and plot or inspire attacks on the West.

A multi-ethnic city where up to 1.5 million people of a pre-war population of around 2 million are still thought to be living, Mosul is divided roughly in half by the Tigris River. The western section, which Iraqi forces have yet to penetrate, has built-up markets and ancient narrow alleyways which will complicate future advances.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had said he would win Mosul back by the end of this year, a deadline now certain to be missed. His commanders say their advance was held up by the need to protect civilians, fewer of whom fled than initially expected.

Inclement weather has repeatedly delayed ground advances which rely heavily on aerial surveillance and air strikes.

Reinforcements arrive in Mosul
I think they misspelled replacements/fillers
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Commander of Nineveh Operations announced on Monday, that new military reinforcements have arrived in the liberated neighborhoods, in the eastern side of Mosul.

Major General Najim al-Jabouri said in a press statement, “Military reinforcements arrived in the neighborhoods of the eastern side of Mosul, and were deployed in the liberated areas.”

“Iraqi army forces are enhancing their presence, as well as preparing to storm into the remaining areas of the eastern side of Mosul,” Jabouri added.

#1  If you have an online business or a popular website please note the following. ICANN, recently relegated to international groups by President Barack Obama, is now beginning to charge exorbitant fees to register or renew what they are now labeling "Premium" websites (domain names). Some fees so far as high as $35,000.00 a year. (For example: www.Documents.legal that has not yet been taken, ICANN is demanding $20,000.00 rather than the common $12 per year).

The danger in this is if they decide www.Rantburg.com is a "Premium" website, they can demand tens of thousands of dollars a year for him to renew this site.

File a formal complaint against ICANN with your state consumer protection agency or attorney general's office or both and with the Better Business Bureau. Contact conservative outlets about this atrocity as I am sure they will be targeted as well by ICANN.

Pushing ICANN out to "International" groups takes away your constitutionally protected free speech rights on the internet. And they can now shut you down immediately via exorbitant renewal fees.

Soon we'll do it like the darkies do, building our own LDAP with IP crawlers.

#4  Go to the Dark Web, i.e.: rantburg.onion.

Of course it will require tor to access, but may not be a bad thing.

AFAIK, ICANN has no control over onion sites.

Afghanistan
Taliban commander among 18 killed in Kunduz city
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A local commander of the Taliban group was among at least 18 killed during the operations in the strategic Kunduz city.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the Taliban capo Ghulam Safi was killed along with 17 others during the operations conducted in the vicinity of Kunduz city.

The anti-government armed Death Eater groups including the Taliban bandidos bad boys have not commented regarding the report so far.

Kunduz is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where the Taliban group launched several attacks this year as part of their spring offensive to capture the strategic Kunduz city.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Interior (MoI), earlier said top Taliban leader who was leading the deadly battle in northern Kunduz province was killed during an ambush of the Afghan cops.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said "A top Taliban capo named Mullah Firoz Jahadi along with five other armed Taliban killed in Aab Band district of Ghazni province in an Afghan National Police ambush."

MoI further added "During this ambush, nine other armed Taliban were maimed and two rocket launchers, two PK machine guns and one vehicle seized as well."

According to the ministry, Mullah Firoz Jahadi was leading the Kunduz battle.
