Obama orders Russia expulsions, sanctions for interference in 2016 election
[Rooters] President Barack Obama on Thursday ordered the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats and sanctioned Russian intelligence officials who Washington believes were involved in hacking U.S. political groups in the 2016 presidential election.
Still waiting for the evidence to be presented...
The measures, taken during the last days of Obama's presidency, mark a new low in U.S.-Russian relations which have deteriorated over serious differences on Ukraine and Syria.

"These actions follow repeated private and public warnings that we have issued to the Russian government, and are a necessary and appropriate response to efforts to harm U.S. interests in violation of established international norms of behavior," Obama said in a statement from vacation in Hawaii.

It was not immediately clear whether President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and nominated people seen as friendly toward Moscow to senior administration posts, would seek to roll back the measures once he takes office on Jan. 20.

Obama is seeking to deter Russia and other foreign governments from leveraging cyber attacks in the future to meddle in U.S. politics, former officials and cyber security experts said.

Obama has been under growing pressure from within his own administration and lawmakers of both political parties to respond more forcefully to the cyber attacks, which included leaked emails of Democratic Party operatives that became part of the media coverage in the campaign for the Nov. 8 presidential election.

The Russian foreign ministry said on Thursday the sanctions were counter-productive and would harm the restoration of bilateral ties. Moscow denies the hacking allegation.

Obama sanctioned two Russian intelligence agencies, the GRU and the FSB, four GRU officers and three companies "that provided material support to the GRU’s cyber operations.

PERSONA NON GRATA
Obama said the State Department declared as "persona non grata" 35 Russian intelligence operatives and is closing two Russian compounds in New York and Maryland that were used by Russian personnel for "intelligence-related purposes". The State Department originally said the 35 were diplomats.

A senior U.S. official told Reuters the move would affect the Russian embassy in Washington and consulate in San Francisco.

The Russians have 72 hours to leave the United States, the official said. Access to the two compounds, which are used by Russian officials for intelligence gathering, will be denied to all Russian officials as of noon on Friday, the senior U.S. official added.

"These actions were taken to respond to Russian harassment of American diplomats and actions by the diplomats that we have assessed to be not consistent with diplomatic practice," the official said.

The State Department has long complained that Russian security agents and traffic police have harassed U.S. diplomats in Moscow, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has raised the issue with Putin and his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov.

"By imposing costs on the Russian diplomats in the United States, by denying them access to the two facilities, we hope the Russian government reevaluates its own actions, which have impeded the ability and safety of our own embassy personnel in Russia," the official said.

The U.S. official declined to name the Russian diplomats who would be affected, although it is understood that Russia's ambassador to the United States, Sergei Kislyak, will not be one of those expelled.
Yeah... this will end well...

German anti-terror services 'ranked Amri a low threat'
German anti-terrorism experts believed Berlin truck attack suspect Anis Amri was unlikely to commit an assault, even though he was a known Islamist who had volunteered for a suicide attack, a report said Thursday.

Minutes before Amri allegedly rammed the hijacked truck into a Christmas market in Berlin, he sent an SMS, saying: "My brother, all is well, according to God's will. I am now in a car, pray for me my brother, pray for me."

The message, as well as a selfie taken in the truck's cab, was likely sent to a 40-year-old Tunisian arrested in Berlin on Wednesday, said the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily.

Investigators seeking to discover if Amri had accomplices said the detained Tunisian suspect "could have been involved in the attack".

Counter-terrorism officials have a detailed file on Amri, they knew he was tightly linked to Germany's radical Islamist network and had looked up instructions online on how to build pipe bombs, the newspaper reported. The latest version of their file on Amri, which included information on his eight different identities, was updated on December 14 -- just five days before he allegedly killed 12 people in the Berlin attack.

Duesseldorf police deemed Amri a Salafist and radical fundamentalist, while Dortmund police had rated him a sympathiser of the Islamic State group.
But they couldn't touch him because...
Amri had been a regular guest at a religious school in a Dortmund apartment run by a notorious radical known as Boban S. that was believed to be a recruitment ground for jihadists.

Nevertheless, on an eight-point scale assessing an individual's potential danger, with "one" the highest threat, counter-terrorism experts rated him a "five" -- meaning they considered an attack possible but unlikely.
Sounds like the 'scale' needs some calibration...
Amri's phone was recovered from the site of the truck attack.

Citing Berlin government sources, the newspaper said the lorry's automatic braking system activated on impact, possibly saving lives. The truck had ploughed into the crowd but swerved to the left after 60 to 80 metres (200 to 260 feet), crashing through a stall before coming to a halt.

Shortly after the rampage, authorities admitted that counter-terrorism services had been watching Amri, suspecting he may have been plotting an attack. But surveillance was dropped in September, as police thought he was primarily as a small-time drug dealer.
That's how he funded himself until he was activated...
Chancellor Angela Merkel ordered a sweeping review of the security apparatus after the attack, so that any necessary reforms could be agreed and implemented quickly.
More bureaucratic hind-end hiding...

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Government Announces Truce Backed by Russia and Turkey
Peace in our time.
The Syrian government and its most important ally, Russia, announced on Thursday that they had reached a cease-fire agreement with Syrian rebels and with Turkey — a potential turning point in a civil war that has lasted nearly six years and claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

The announcement follows the retaking of all of Aleppo, once Syria’s industrial capital and a stronghold of the opposition, by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, and negotiations in Moscow that involved Mr. Assad’s government, Russia, Iran and Turkey — but, pointedly, not the United States.

Not included in the agreement is the Islamic State, which controls territory in eastern Syria and across the border with Iraq; the Syrian affiliate of Al Qaeda, which is strongest in the country’s northwest; and “groups linked to them.”

It was not clear which of the scores of rebel groups scattered across Syria had agreed to the cease-fire, nor whether those that had not been consulted would abide by it.
That assumes Rooshuns would 'consult' anyone, which isn't likely...
Throughout the war, rebel forces have failed to form a united leadership, and infighting among groups has been common.

It was also unclear what criteria the Syrian military and its Russian allies would use to define groups “linked” to the jihadists. In the past, they have dismissed much of the armed opposition as “terrorists” who could not be distinguished from jihadist groups.

Russia, Mr. Assad’s backer, and Turkey, which supports some of the rebels, will guarantee the truce, to begin at midnight on Thursday, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said. Minutes later, the Syrian military said it would halt operations nationwide starting at midnight.

The two sides actually signed three agreements, Mr. Putin said: the cease-fire itself; an agreement detailing how it would be carried out; and a third expressing readiness to begin peace talks for a settlement to the conflict. Mr. Putin said that Mr. Assad’s government and the opposition would take part in peace talks in Kazakhstan, but he did not announce a date.

The Russian defense minister, Sergei K. Shoigu, said the truce would include 62,000 opposition fighters across Syria, and that the Russian military had set up a hotline with its Turkish counterpart to allow immediate communication about the truce and whether it was being met.
And whom to kill...
In a brief statement, the Syrian Army said the cease-fire came “after the victories and successes that our armed forces accomplished in more than one place,” an allusion to the recent retaking of Aleppo by government forces and allied militias.

The cease-fire agreement appeared to reflect the changed geopolitical reality since Donald J. Trump’s election as president of the United States. Mr. Trump has called President Obama’s Syria policies a failure and has backed the removal of remaining support for Syrian rebels, vowing to make fighting terrorism virtually the entirety of his administration’s Syria policy.
Prior to that, NYT, it reflects the complete failure of the 'red line' put forward by Champ. He failed to honor his words and so Russia, Turkey, Syria and Iran decided that they were free to do whatever they wanted, including war. Mr. Trump correctly recognizes the failure, and understands that not only has the horse left the barn, the horse has been shot and the barn has been razed. That's why he isn't going stand up for the Syrian rebels, a fair number of whom are as odious as Pencilneck himself.
Mr. Assad has called Mr. Trump “a natural ally” in that fight, and the Russian foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, said on Thursday that Mr. Trump’s administration would be welcome to join the peace process after he starts on Jan. 20.

“I would hope that, after the Donald Trump administration takes office, it will also be able to join these efforts,” Mr. Lavrov said at the meeting, shown on state-run television.
I expect Trump to give Assad a cold shoulder.
In Turkey, the government said that the Lebanese militia Hezbollah — which is backed by Iran and has sent thousands of fighters to battle Mr. Assad’s forces — should withdraw from Syria.
Don't count on it...
The foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, told the Turkish news channel A Haber on Thursday that Turkey would guarantee rebel compliance with the cease-fire agreement, while Russia would guarantee adherence by Mr. Assad’s government. Iran would also help monitor compliance by Mr. Assad’s government and by allied Shiite militias, including Hezbollah, he said.

Gorka: Obama Created ‘Global Chaos,' gas on the fire with Anti-Israel UN Res
[Breitbart] Breitbart News’s national security editor Dr. Sebastian Gorka, author of the best-selling book Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War, talked about President Obama’s betrayal of Israel at the United Nations on Fox News’s Hannity with guest host Jeanine Pirro.

"It’s outrageous," Gorka said:

This is a lame-duck presidency, but what’s happened in the last eight years? The Obama administration has created global chaos. The world is on fire wherever you look -- north, south, east, and west. Europe, you see Russia invade Ukraine; Asia, you see China build fake islands and then put military installations on them. Then you see disaster after disaster in the Middle East. The rise of ISIS, the rise of Boko Haram, on and on and on.

"And what do they do? Instead of following the Hippocratic Oath for the last month of their administration -- the ’do no harm’ promise -- what do they do? They throw gasoline on the fire. They side with everybody else who really is using the United Nations to execute a form of veiled anti-Semitism. There’s nothing else that you can describe this as," he said.

Fellow guest Ric Grenell said there was "no question" the Obama administration was behind the controversial anti-Israel resolution at the UN.

"I spoke specifically and directly to the French ambassador to the United States, and he told me that they have been working on the Obama administration for weeks," Grenell said. "Then we see the media from New Zealand that have now come out and confirmed the fact that the New Zealand foreign minister has had multiple conversations with John Kerry, trying to find the language that would be acceptable so that the United States would abstain."

Divide Washington not Jerusalem
Likud ministers competed Wednesday in their attacks on US Secretary of State John Kerry, following his address on the future of the Middle East.

Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev called for dividing Washington instead of Jerusalem. She said Kerry gave terrorists hope that they can destroy Israel in stages.

...Oded Revivi, chief foreign envoy of the Council of Jewish Communities in Judea and Samaria, issued a scathing assessment of John Kerry and his abilities: "John Kerry is a stain on American foreign policy.

He has chosen to eternalize his legacy as the worst secretary of state in history. He chose to stab his closest ally in the back while rivers of blood flowed like water across the Middle East. I can personally attest to the fact that he knows very little about the realities in Judea and Samaria and instead chooses to defame us from afar by repeating fictitious mantras against us."
I imagine, in the future, there will be hundreds doctorates in american history attempting to explain Obama era.

DJT says Sprint will bring 5k jobs back to the US; OneWeb will create 3k jobs
[CNBC] President-elect Donald Trump said Wednesday that Sprint will bring 5,000 jobs back to the United States from overseas, while another company OneWeb will add 3,000 jobs in the U.S.

Trump said the deal "was done through" SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, a Japanese billionaire and technology investor. Earlier this month, the pair announced in New York that SoftBank agreed to invest $50 billion in the U.S. and aimed to create 50,000 jobs.

While President-Elect Trump made a point to announce Sprint would keep or create 5,000 jobs in the U.S., those jobs are part of a previously-announced deal with SoftBank from several weeks ago, a Sprint spokesman told NBC News.

"The 5,000 jobs announced today are part of the 50,000 jobs that Masa Son (Masayoshi Son, founder and CEO of SoftBank) announced a few weeks ago, but these jobs will be funded by Sprint," the Sprint spokesman said.

Petulant POTUS names Utah, Nevada monuments despite State and GOP opposition
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- President Barack Obama designated two national monuments Wednesday at sites in Utah and Nevada that have become key flashpoints over use of public land in the U.S. West, marking the administration's latest move to protect environmentally sensitive areas in its final days.

The Bears Ears National Monument in Utah will cover 1.35 million acres in the Four Corners region, the White House said. In a victory for Native American tribes and conservationists, the designation protects land that is considered sacred and is home to an estimated 100,000 archaeological sites, including ancient cliff dwellings.

It's a blow for state Republican leaders and many rural residents who say it will add another layer of unnecessary federal control and close the area to new energy development, a common refrain in the battle over use of the American West's vast open spaces. Utah's attorney general vowed to sue.

In Nevada, a 300,000-acre Gold Butte National Monument outside Las Vegas would protect a scenic and ecologically fragile area near where rancher Cliven Bundy led an armed standoff with government agents in 2014. It includes rock art, artifacts, rare fossils and recently discovered dinosaur tracks.

Berlin Attack Accomplice Suspect Arrested in Germany
BERLIN (AP) -- German prosecutors said Wednesday that they have detained a Tunisian man they think may have been involved in last week’s truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin.

The 40-year-old, who wasn’t identified, was detained in Berlin during a search of his home and business, federal prosecutors said.

The man’s telephone number was saved in the cellphone of Anis Amri, a fellow Tunisian believed to have driven a truck into the market on Dec. 19. Amri, 24, was killed in a shootout with Italian police in a suburb of Milan early Friday.

Of the new suspect, prosecutors said in a statement that "further investigations indicate that he may have been involved in the attack."

Twelve people died and dozens more were injured in the truck attack. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility.

Sacramento Mayor Pummels Protester Who Hit Him With Pie
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A man took a coconut cream pie from a grocery bag, grabbed Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson from behind and smacked him in the face with it at a charity event, leading the former NBA star to start swinging and then tackle the man who was left battered and facing assault charges.

The pie wielder and local activist, Sean Thompson, 32, said Thursday that the mayor overreacted, sending him to the hospital for nine stitches before he went to jail. He said he was angry Johnson devoted so much political energy to an arena for the city’s basketball team and not to other needs such as education and homelessness.

The mayor was greeting people eating at an outdoor charity dinner Wednesday night at Sacramento Charter High School when Thompson pulled Johnson back and shoved the pie in his face, said Johnson’s chief of staff, Crystal Strait.

"There was no throwing of the pie," said Erika Bjork, who works for a professional soccer team in Sacramento and saw the encounter up close. "This was a direct assault. It just happened that he had a pie in his hand."

Bjork, whose boss is a major donor to Johnson, said the mayor looked shocked and swung at Thompson multiple times, but she didn’t see him land any punches.

Thompson had red and blue bruises around his right eye when he spoke to The Associated Press in jail.

"When I threw the pie at him, right at that moment, I shouted at him. I said, ’You need to better represent me,'" Thompson said.

He said the mayor turned and hit him at least twice "and pretty hard." Thompson said he covered his face and started to move away but was quickly surrounded by people and kept taking hits. He couldn’t tell who delivered the blows.

Thompson said he expected to be tackled by police but was caught off guard when the punches came from the mayor. He said he has no regrets but was surprised to be facing a felony, assaulting a public official. [snip]

Oman joins Saudi-led Islamic alliance against terror
[Saudi Gazette] Oman has joined a Saudi-led coalition of Islamic countries to fight terrorism, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The sultanate announced its decision to join the 40-nation Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism in a letter delivered to Deputy Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, second deputy premier and minister of defense.

The letter from the Omani Minister Responsible for Defense Affairs Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi was handed to the Deputy Crown Prince by Sayyid Ahmed Bin Hilal al-Busaidy, Oman’s ambassador to the Kingdom, in Riyadh on Wednesday.

While lauding the Omani decision, Prince Muhammad appreciated the Omani leadership’s support to the Saudi efforts in leading the alliance.

New offensive in Kandahar to begin
[ToloNews] Security forces have launched a military operation to clear a number of insecure areas in Shah Wali Kot district in Kandahar province, officials said on Wednesday.

The officials said at least 13 villages have so far been cleared of Taliban in the district.

The district police chief, Bacha, said an increase in conflicts in Uruzgan, Kandahar’s neighboring province, has affected the security of Shah Wali Kot.

Therefore, the police chief said, there is a need to increase the number of security forces in the province.

According to officials, more than 100 villages in the district fell to the Taliban when they attacked the district a few months ago.

Meanwhile, a number of residents from the district said government should pay further attention to their safety and defuse mines that have been planted in parts of their district to target security forces.

Iraq
Mosul labs, tunnels found; 5 DAESH infiltrators killed
[Arab Times (Kuwait)] Iraq’s army recently discovered several labs for manufacturing explosives and a large network of underground tunnels used by the so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, defense ministry said Tuesday. Upon an important tip-off, the Iraqi military intelligence forces were able to locate the abandoned labs and tunnels while carrying out military operations to liberate Nineveh governorate from the terrorist group, the ministry said in a statement.

The forces found six labs that manufacture IEDs, bombs, and mortar shells in Kokjla city in eastern Mosul, it said, adding that all explosive items were made to target military forces and innocent civilians, including the internally displaced persons. IS elements used the large tunnels as their hideout and shelter, and for their transportation and escape, the ministry added, noting that all tunnels were equipped with electricity and other necessities. Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, the enormous newt was trying to decide if Gloria was edible...
five IS operatives were killed by Iraqi police while trying to infiltrate into the city of Mosul, said a security source Wednesday.

Iraqi police General Raed Shaker said in a statement that the IS members were killed while they tried to sneak into south of Mosul. The police assault resulted in the destruction of a vehicle owned by the IS operatives, said General Shaker. Since launching an operation to free Mosul from IS on Oct 17, the Iraqi army -- along with allies -- have secured and reclaimed several towns and neighborhoods in the city.

Residents of Mosul said Wednesday that an Arclight airstrike disabled the city’s last functioning bridge across the Tigris River, forcing residents to cross the river in boats and further disrupting the IS group’s movement. The residents, who spoke to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on condition of anonymity fearing for their safety, said the Arclight airstrike happened at dawn Monday. Iraqi and US-led international coalition officials were not available to comment.

Activists from inside Mosul published pictures Tuesday night of the metal bridge, known as the Old Bridge, showing its twisted girders sinking into the water as boats were seen ferrying the residents from both banks. The bridge, which was built during the reign of King Ghazi in the 1930s, is considered one of the city’s iconic landmarks.

The northern city of Mosul had five bridges spanning the Tigris River, which runs through the center of the city. Four of them have now been bombed in Arclight airstrikes since the massive government military operation began on Oct 17, while one was disabled weeks before the operation began.

Dems offer mixed reactions to Israel speech

[Ynet] Democratic lawmakers are offering mixed reactions to Secretary of State John Kerry's speech deploring Israeli settlement-building and defending the US move not to veto a controversial UN resolution.

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York says his former Senate colleague "seems to have forgotten the history off settlements in Gaza" and warns Kerry's speech may have "emboldened extremists on both sides."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says Kerry reaffirmed America's commitment to Israel. But she also says she opposes UN efforts, a reference to the Obama administration's decision on the resolution.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer is also avoiding direct criticism of Kerry. But he says the resolution "will not bring peace closer."

All three Democrats are members of congressional leadership.

India-Pakistan
Battling Energy Crisis, Pakistan Turns on Fourth Nuclear Plant
[AnNahar] Pakistain's fourth nuclear power plant went online Wednesday, a joint collaboration with China that adds 340 megawatts to the national grid as part of the goverment's efforts to end a growth-sapping energy deficit.

Pakistain is one of the few developing countries pursuing atomic energy in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, as it seeks to close an electricity shortfall that can stretch up to 7,000 MW in peak summer months, or around 32 percent of total demand.

The Chashma-III reactor, located some 250 kilometres (155 miles) southwest of capital Islamabad, is the third built as part of a collaboration between the Pakistain Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

The country's first nuclear plant was supplied by Canada in 1972, with an installed capacity of 137 MW.

"Today we have crossed an important milestone in the journey to free the nation from scheduled power cuts. I am thankful to Allah and congratulate the entire nation," Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
told an inaugural ceremony attended by Chinese and Pak officials.

He added a fourth Chashma plant was expected to be commissioned by April 2017. Two more reactors would follow at an unspecified date in central Pakistain, as well as two giant 2,200 MW power stations in southern Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
Islamabad is aiming to produce 8,800 MW from atomic energy by 2030.

Pakistain has been struggling to provide enough power to its nearly 200 million citizens for years, and Sharif has vowed to solve the crisis by 2018.

The energy sector has traditionally struggled to cover the cost of producing electricity, leading the government to divert $2 billion annually as a subsidy, according to a recent report commissioned by the British government.

China meanwhile is ramping up investment in its South Asian neighbour as part of a $46 billion project unveiled last year that will link its far-western Xinjiang region to Pakistain's Gwadar port with a series of infrastructure, power and transport upgrades.

Last week Pakistain's main bourse announced that a Chinese consortium was set to acquire a 40 percent stake in the stock exchange in a deal estimated at $84 million.

Shanghai Electric announced in August it would buy a majority stake in the utility that supplies energy to Karachi for $1.7 billion, in the country's biggest ever private-sector acquisition.

ISIS executes 3 in Kirkuk

Kirkuk/Nineveh (Iraqinews.com) Islamic State militants executed three young men in Kirkuk and arrested five others in Mosul on Wednesday, civilian and police sources have said.

Iraqi police sources were quoted as saying that the extremist group executed three young men in al-Abbasi area, hawija, west of Kirkuk, accusing them of collaboration with security authorities, a charge based on which the group sentenced dozens of Iraqis to death since it took over several cities in the country in 2014.

The trio was executed by a firing squad, the source added.

Several areas in western Kirkuk are still in IS hold, and the situation there has forced thousands to flee their homes to refugee camps.

In Mosul, the group’s militants detained five men for possessing some of the “consolation letters” air-dropped by Iraqi forces on the city. The source revealed that IS had prohibited the possession of the letters which Iraqi forces used to drop from aircraft to morally support civilians stranded in the city and to assure of near victory over IS.

IS has been infamous for executing civilians who disobey its restrictions, and has been accused by aid and rights groups of targeting civilians attempting to flee the city which the group had previously designated as the capital of its self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”.

Difficult living conditions and the life threats under IS have prompted nearly 137.000 to leave Mosul since the start of military operations to retake the city last October.

ISIS executes Palestinian grrl in Damascus

[ARA News] Damascus – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Wednesday executed a Palestinian girl after accusing her of supporting the Syrian regime.

Hadil Yassin Abu al-Madi, a Palestinian resident of al-Yarmouk district in Damascus, was arrested by the ISIS-led Hisba Police on suspicions of cooperating with the Syrian regime’s secret service, also known as Mukhabarat.

The Sharia Court in Yarmouk convicted Hadil on charges of spying and ordered her immediate execution on Wednesday.

“ISIS militants publicly executed Hadil in al-Yarmouk. Dozens of people witnessed the brutal execution,” local media activist Wissam Doghmoush told ARA News.

ISIS has been in control of a residential block in southern Damascus since April 2015, when it drove out al-Qaeda-splinter group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham and allied rebel factions. Al-Hajar al-Aswad neighborhood is believed to be the Islamic State’s primary staging area. Their militants also control most of the nearby Yarmouk and Tadamun Districts.

In October, the Islamic State threatened to invade Damascus and apply its puritanical interpretation of Sharia law throughout the capital. ISIS said that their invasion was imminent and vowed to strike at Syrian security forces and the armed opposition.

Africa North
Lack of equipment means some Dutch soldiers can’t patrol in Mali
Good lord -- the Dutch are supposed to be good at planning.
Some Dutch soldiers serving with UN peacekeepers in Mali are unable to go on patrol because of a shortage of equipment, the AD said on Tuesday.

The shortages affect soldiers who have arrived relatively recently in the troubled west African country. In particular, there are not enough night vision binoculars and equipment to jam roadside bombs, the AD said. There is also a shortage of new, lighter bullet-proof vests.

The AD sent a journalist to spend the Christmas break with Dutch soldiers in Mali and said the shortage of equipment is leading to major frustration among some soldiers.

The 11th air assault brigade has recently taken over the role in Mali done previously by special forces. Now there are more people in the camp, ‘we have to make choices and can deliver less than we would like to,’ commander Ron Sensen told the paper.

The army hopes to have the problem solved by mid January, the AD said.

Bangladesh
New Year Celebrations: JMB's 'attack plan foiled'
[Bangla Daily Star] Police have locked away
You have the right to remain silent...
five suspected members of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.
who were allegedly collecting explosives to carry out attacks in Dhaka during New Year celebrations.

The arrests were made in the capital's Darus Salam area on Tuesday evening when the suspects were carrying around 30kg of explosives in their bags to make bombs at a safe house, Monirul Islam, chief of Counter Terrorism unit of DMP, told a news briefing yesterday.

The police did not say anything about the target spots of the suspects.

The arrestees -- Md Riaz alias Engineer alias Rakib, Md Abubin Sayem alias Bappi alias Opu, Kazi Abdullah Al Osman alias Ahsan, Md Sohag alias Chairman and Md Mamun alias Himel -- are Ehsar or full-time members of the "Old JMB", according to police.

This is the first time in months that law enforcers learned about a planned attack by the members of JMB. It was believed that the JMB was busy collecting funds for the organization through robbery and planning ambushes on police and jail guards to free their arrested leaders, sources said.

The arrests and the seizure came days after the police had busted a "Neo JMB" den in Ashkona during which a female JMB member killed herself and seriously injured her four-year-old daughter detonating a boom jacket. A 14-year-old suspect was also killed during the operation, while two female holy warrior suspects surrendered with their two children.

The "Neo JMB," a faction of the outlawed JMB that follows the ideologies of terror organization IS, was responsible for the worst-ever holy warrior attack in Bangladesh at a Gulshan café on July 1.

A CT official asking not to be named claimed that the JMB's Rajshahi region leaders Zia, Hayder and Sahidullah were the key planners of the attack that was to be carried out during New Year's celebrations.

"We suspect the three names are organizational but hope to get more information from the five arrestees after interrogating them," added the official.

During the briefing at DMP's media centre, Monirul also said they had learned about the five arrestees from another gang arrested in the capital with money and gold ornaments they had robbed.

He said the leader of the robbers was one Reaz alias Zinia alias Rakib, who had recently visited India and met Salauddin alias Salehin, chief of the "Old JMB". Rakib started organising the group in Bangladesh with instruction from Salehin, he added.

The CT chief also said many "Old JMB" members were joining the "Neo JMB".

Referring to Shakira, who killed herself detonating her boom jacket in Ashkona, Monirul said her husband, "Old JMB" member Rashedur Rahman alias Sumon, was arrested on October 17 in the city with six other "Old JMB's" gang of robbers.q

Arabia
Kuwait's Preventive Security Service monitoring 50 linked to DAESH
[Arab Times (Kuwait)] Recently, the Preventive Security Service (PSS) said it was monitoring at least 50 people, mostly Kuwaitis, who have close ideological link with DAESH, reported al- Anba daily quoting a high-level security source.

The source revealed some of these people are holy mans who preach in mosques but their association with the terrorist organization is purely intellectual, adding that their movements are monitored round the clock.

The source said the recentlyseized cells led to the discovery of some more of these cells although several of them were known to the Internal State Security Unit at PSS. The source added it is not a secret that people are called up every now and then, in an explicit message from the security services that they are under surveillance and their communications and even their movements are known.

In response to a question why they are not arrested and prosecuted, the source said the Constitution and the law necessitate physical proofs which are not available because the issue is related to thought, tendencies and sympathy. He stressed these persons are closely monitored, especially their remittances, pointing out that the extension of detention comes as one of the steps to prosecute those with bully boy ideology.

The source went on to say that the Interior Ministry, in coordination with the Central Bank and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, played a significant role in reducing the flow of Kuwaiti funds to terrorist organizations. He warned that any contact with any terrorist or suspicious organization shall be met with decisive response, indicating there is no room for leniency at the expense of the security of the country and its people The source affirmed the PSS and Criminal Investigations Department have the right to use all their powers to protect the country and its citizens, even the use of firearms if necessary.

Sympathisers
Kuwaiti courts have sentenced to various jail terms a number of members, sympathisers and financiers of the IS group. In October, Kuwait police arrested an Egyptian driver suspected of being a member of the IS, after he rammed a garbage truck into a pick-up carrying five Americans.

Authorities in July said they had dismantled three IS cells plotting attacks, including a suicide kaboom against a Shiite mosque and against an interior ministry target. An IS-linked jacket wallah killed 26 worshippers in June last year when he went kaboom! in a mosque of Kuwait’s Shiite minority, in the worst such attack in the Gulf state’s history. The Egyptian, allegedly affiliated to the DAESH terrorist organization and identified as Ibrahim Suleiman told the Criminal Court he attempted to kill five Americans on the Seventh Ring Road by deliberately crashing into their vehicle, reports al-Rai daily. The suspect told the court the men are infidel and deserved to die. He also admitted to belonging to the DAESH organization. The court has set Jan 22, 2017, for the next hearing.

Gov. Jerry Brown: California Will Work With Foreign Gov’t On Climate Policies
[DAILYCALLER] Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Gov. Jerry Governor Moonbeam Brown
... those who ignore history are bound to repeat it ...
said Monday his state will bypass Washington, D.C., and work instead with foreign governments on ways to reduce climate change.

Brown, a Democrat, said that he and other Golden State politicians would work directly with other countries to strengthen some of the most stringent environmental policies in the world.

"California can make a significant contribution to advancing the cause of dealing with climate change, irrespective of what goes on in Washington," Brown told news hounds.

The governor made similar comments in December when he said California would launch its own climate-reading satellites if President-elect Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

Lame-Duck Obama Admin Rejects CA High-Speed Rail $15 Billion Loan

Technically, I like the idea of trains. A high speed train from LA to San Francisco would be good, if it could be done on time and budget without all the graft that one must expect with the criminals running California. Bakersfield to San Jose not so much.

Another good idea would be to put a real, functional subway system into LA. Driving in that town is a nightmare. The cost would be astronomical but the hours and the gasoline lost on those freeways are astronomical too. I know, I know. Just don't ask Texans to pay for it.

#14  As for secession or the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, here's the deal:

We know that beginning with Bill Clinton or most likely with Bush Senior a drastic, almost biblical demographic redistribution was undertaken in the southwestern United States. We know that before then California, even with San Francisco and Los Angeles, was a red state that gave you presidents like Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. We know that the demographic redistribution was largely responsible for turning California from red to blue and we know that was the purpose of the redistribution.

Wouldn't it be smarter to find a way to turn California back to red than giving it to Mexico? Let us consider the politics of the possible instead of the cynical. The first step, of course, would be to deport illegal aliens. We are a sovereign nation and we have a right to do so. Another step might be to defang and/or defund the university system and the teachers' union. If Democrats can mess with peoples' lives on a grand scale then so can Trump.

Afghanistan
Afghan Special Forces killed over 400 Taliban leaders in past 9 month: MoI
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Over 400 leaders of the Taliban group were killed in the past 9 during the operations conducted by the Afghan Special Forces, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) officials said Wednesday.

MoI front man Sediq Sediqi said the Minister of Interior Taj Mohammad Jahid praised the Special Operations Forces of the Afghan National Police during an event in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
today.

Minister Jahid said the ongoing violence in Afghanistan is not having roots to insurgency led by Taliban and ISIS loyalists.

He said the Afghan nation is facing a major undeclared war but insisted that the Afghan people have never surrendered to oppression.

Jahid further added that the enemies of the country have done all they could do to kill the Afghan people in the past 16 years.

According to Jahid, the enemies of the country were looking to take control of the major parts of the country and close the highways for the traffic and passengers but they continuously failed in their attempts.

The remarks by Jahid calling the ongoing violence in the country an undeclared war came as the Afghan officials have long been emphasizing that the insurgency in Afghanistan has external roots.

The officials are saying that the leadership councils of the bad boy groups are based outside the country from where they plan and coordinate attacks in Afghanistan with the help of the regional spy agencies.

Iraq
6 ISIS Bad Guys die in Kirkuk
Kirkuk (Iraqinews.com) Six Islamic State militants were killed in an armed ambush in southwest Kirkuk, a security source in the province said Wednesday.

An armed group had set an ambush on Wednesday morning, targeting a vehicle carrying Islamic State elements passing on a road between the town of al-Riyadh and Hawija, the source told Alsumaria News.

The extremist group imposed tight measures at the attack’s scene, said the source.

IS militants maintain control over several areas in southwest of Kirkuk since they took over several Iraqi cities in 2014 to proclaim a so-called “Islamic Caliphate”. Those areas have seen an exchange of attacks between the group and security forces as the Iraqi government leads a wide-scale campaign to clear Iraqi cities from the group’s fighters since October.

An Interior Ministry official was quoted as saying on Tuesday that the battles with IS have left nearly 6000 militants on the ground, and Iraqi and US commanders participating in the battles had earlier put the number of militants killed in operations at nearly 4000.

The tensions in Kirkuk have forced thousands of people to flee homes at the province to refugee camps, with the Migration and Displacement Ministry putting the total of those who fled violence at IS-held regions since October at 137.000.

Berlin attack suspect Amri better connected to extremists than thought
[Deutsche Welle] Tunisian-born Anis Amri traveled to 15 different mosques - 12 of which were located in the western Ruhr region, according to a report from German public broadcaster WDR's "Aktuelle Stunde" television program.

Amri used one of eight aliases to apply for asylum in the western German city of Oberhausen, the report said citing a multi-page profile on the Berlin attack suspect put together by security authorities. Starting in February 2016, Amri was located mostly in Berlin although he should not have been allowed to leave the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where he registered for asylum.

The state criminal investigation office in Düsseldorf classified him as a threat on May 10.

The profile stated that Amri behaved in an especially conspiratorial manner when he was in Berlin and had frequent contact with people who security services said had ties to the radical Salafist-Islamist scene. Two of the men Amri came into contact with were under suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.

Back in North Rhine-Westphalia, Amri also had two contacts in Dortmund who had ties to the so-called militant "Islamic State" (IS) group, the report said.

Revelations that Amri had been on a federal list of persons regarded as a potential threat and had been monitored by authorities for months has prompted sharp criticism toward security failures in Germany.

IS claimed responsibility for the Berlin attack, while German authorities are investigating to what extent Amri may have received support before or after the assault.

in a private hospital in Zamboanga City in restive Mindanao.

Major Filemon Tan, the front man of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, identified the suspect as Hairulla Asbang alias Ahadi, who was arrested inside a hospital where he was confined for wounds he sustained in an encounter with government forces on the neighboring island province of Sulu.

Tan said a team of soldiers and coppers also arrested a cohort of Asbang who was with him inside the hospital.

The team, he said, was armed with arrest warrants issued by the regional courts where Asbang was indicted for murder which is non-bailable and carries the maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

According to Tan, Asbang is wanted for the abduction of three foreigners - two Canadians and a Norwegian businessman - and their Filipina companion who were kidnapped while holidaying in a posh island resort in Mindanao in October 2015.

He was arrested by officials of a security agency recently established by the Abuja Municipal Area Council, popularly known as AMAC Marshal in the Federal Capital Territory.

A statement issued on Tuesday night by the front man of the AMAC Marshal, Kingsley Madaki, said the suspect who gave his name as Usman, was apprehended at exactly 4:30 pm at Utako market shortly after he arrived the premises.

Madaki disclosed that the suspect was apprehended "with a Qur’an and a chaplet on his neck while trying to lobby people in the market."

The statement said the suspected Boko Haram member "confessed that there are many of his colleagues in the city."

The agency, therefore, appealed to residents of AMAC and the FCT to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement to AMAC Marshal personnel and other security agencies.

Egypt’s army destroys 1,700 meter smuggling tunnel in Rafah
[AlAhram] Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported that the tunnel was used to smuggle persons, weapons and ammunition

Egypt’s military has destroyed a new 1,700 meter long smuggling tunnel in Sinai Peninsula in its continued effort to combat terrorist activities, state news agency MENA reported on Wednesday.

According to the agency, the passageway, located at the international borderline with Egyptian border city of Rafah, was prepared and used to smuggle people, supplies, weaponry, and ammunition.

The army’s second field army was able to demolish the tunnel and eliminate all six openings to block all Death Eater groups and smugglers from using it again.

This is the second time that the Egyptian army has announced in December that it had discovered and destroyed smuggling tunnels.

Earlier in December, the army said that it had torn down seven smuggling tunnels connecting the Israeli-besieged Gazoo Strip with the Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt has long portrayed the tunnels as a passageway for arms and bully boyz that it has been fighting in North Sinai, posing a risk to the country's security.

In 2014, the army officially announced that it had destroyed a total of 1,813 smuggling tunnels since January 2011.

Obama administration prepares sanctions, retaliation for Russian election meddling
The Obama administration is preparing to announce, as soon as Thursday, a series of retaliation measures against Russia for meddling in the US election, according to American officials briefed on the plans. The actions are expected to include expanded sanctions and diplomatic measures, the officials said, in what the administration deems a proportional response to a Russian operation that went beyond cyber hacking activities common among nations.

Russia will respond to any "hostile steps" that the US may take in response to allegations of hacking during the 2016 election, according to the official representative for the ministry.

Some of the steps are expected to name individuals associated with a Russian disinformation campaign that US intelligence officials say used hacked information from mostly Democratic Party organizations and officials to attack the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign.

The retaliatory measures are separate from an intelligence report President Barack Obama ordered on foreign hacking of US election entities. That report expected in early January will include declassified intelligence information on cyber hacks by China in 2008 and 2012, as well as the hacking and disinformation activities by Russian intelligence agencies in the 2016 campaign, the officials said.

The administration's announcement comes after months of internal debate over how to respond to Russian cyber activity that US law enforcement and intelligence agencies have watched take place for over a year.

US intelligence officials believe that the Russian efforts were intended to hurt Clinton's campaign. At a minimum the Russians expected the operation to sow confusion into the US elections. Then as they saw it having some success, the Russian intelligence agencies redoubled their efforts by funneling releases of hacked information to sites such as WikiLeaks and DCLeaks, intelligence officials believe. Obama administration officials have come under attack from Democrats since the election for not sooner taking public action against the Russians.

Administration officials have said any delays have been in order to allow intelligence and law enforcement agencies to do their work. There were also sensitivities about protecting US classified sources and methods on cyber activities.

And at least one reason for not taking more public action, as CNN first reported, was that White House officials didn't want to appear to be favoring the Democratic presidential nominee's campaign. They assumed Clinton would win the election, and there was concern that Donald Trump -- already making claims of a rigged election -- would use any Obama administration actions to bolster his claims.

#16  Still think it was a democrat inside job.

I seem to remember Team Obama bragging - bragging - about sending their elections A-Team to work against Netenyahu.

And Obama onceself threatening the UK if they voted pro-brexit.

And the NGOs who went to Egypt to work for Morsi and were so meddlesome, some were arrested, and was so against what the people supported a coup.

My favorite is the Honduran coup, where Obama supported the illegal extra term, but Hillary, after receiving a fat gift to The Foundation, opposed Zelaya.

Interestingly, or maybe not so, is when the people rose against Venezuela and Iran, Obama was very much so pro-regime.

In fact, I seem to remember Obama mocking both Romney and McCain about their concerns over Russia. There was even a movie made back in the 80s over a concern hacking could start a war.

So he is going all sabot cat and spraying ink like a herd of octopi. Probably taking notes on who slow-walks selling MANPADS to the group who just assassinated a Russian diplomat, for example, and who jumps how high.

But seriously, MANPADS 4 Jihadis? Anyone out there see anything like 'ISIS airstrike decimates Syrian position'? 'ISIS helicopters catch convoy in the open'?

And didn't Jaw Kerry just go on TV and directly interfere with the politics of Israel? Seriously doing his goodbye speech dedicated directly at the politics of Israel? Sounded like a bad karaoke of a Daler Mehndi song, meaning no offense to Mr. Mehndi.

And what did the e-mail leaks really do, except expose the total disdain the democrat leadership has for members of its supposed constituency? The absolute corrupt leadership? How Bernie was sandbagged? All the leaks did was point out that, in fact, there are no clothes.

So they will cash in their open clandestine activities, set up potential shops, whine about not getting their laffy taffy, and screw up as much as possible to sully the next administration.

Afghanistan
Insurgents torch cell tower in Nangarhar
No Ring of Honor Wrestling feed on cell phones for you!
You thought they were getting NPR on their cell phones?
[ToloNews] Armed insurgents set a telecommunication tower alight on Monday night in Nangarhar province, local officials said Wednesday.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Attullah Khogyani, confirmed the incident and said it was an MTN tower in Bati Kot district.

The insurgents fled the area. No causalities were reported in the incident.

No group has claimed responsibility yet for the incident.

Earlier this year, officials from the Afghanistan Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA), said hundreds of towers around the country are under threat on account of a strategy being employed by the Taliban and other militant groups involving the extortion of money from private telecom companies operating in Afghanistan.

Telecommunication services have expanded significantly over the past few years in Afghanistan and the growth has benefited local communities, businesses and the government. Access to new methods of communication and sources of information has helped connect isolated groups across the country, spur economic growth and social development.

However, for all those reasons, and the fact that the businesses behind the spread of telecommunication technology around the country are so profitable, militant groups have looked to impede the development process and exploit companies for their own gain.

Through threats of violence and forced system failures, armed anti-government groups give telecommunications companies the choice between paying money or having their towers targeted by attacks.

Home Front: Culture Wars
University of Kansas students are being offered buttons spelling out their preferred gender pronouns
[DailyMail] - Library employees now sport the pins, with extras given to interested students

- The buttons come in three versions: 'He him his,' ''She her hers' and, for people who don't identify themselves as male or female, 'They them theirs'

- 'We encourage you to ask before assuming someone's gender' a sign reads

- Buttons are part of the 'You Belong Here' marketing effort to lure undergrads

- Libraries have reordered them at least once
Poor Cousin to "almost twice."
to keep up with demand"

Lemme see here. For about $5.00 per button, maybe 1,000 buttons purchased. Let's say the purchased buttons are twice as "neat" to look at as those linked. So, for an initial investment of, say, $15,000 (includes artwork, public entity surcharge, processing, stupid slogan fee, etc.), somebody could create a high-school targeted marketing gimmick eventually picked up by International Press.

Not a bad publicity ROI for someone so inclined and "lucky."

Iraq
Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

1 dead in bombing attack in Mahmoudiya

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One person was killed and seven others were injured when an explosive device went off in southern Baghdad, a security source was quoted as saying on Wednesday on conditions of anonymity.

The bomb exploded near a popular market area at the district of Mahmoudiya, the source said. Casualties were all civilians.

Since 2014, violence surged Across Iraq, with Islamic State militants taking over wide areas of the country to establish a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq said earlier this week that violence in Iraq during 2016 left more than 12000 dead and more than 14000 wounded. According to the organization, those dead included 6.492 civilians and 5.546 military personnel. Deaths and injuries occurred in Baghdad, Salahuddin, Nineveh, Kirkuk, Anbar and Diyala, UNAMI said, adding that they resulted from military operations against Islamic State as well as in shootings, bombings and suicide attacks against civilians and security across those areas.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the Wednesday attacks, but Some observers believe Islamic State militants have tended to carry out violent attacks in Baghdad and other provinces to divert security pressure on Mosul, where the extremist group struggles to defend its last bastion in Iraq against advancing Iraqi government and popular forces.

Bangladesh
Militant Suspect Trisha: She called her parents during police raid
[Bangla Daily Star] Parents of Trisha Moni had been waiting to hear from her for eight long months. They finally heard from her early Saturday, but they had no idea what trouble she was into.

Trisha, wife of “Neo JMB” leader Maynul Islam, was then in the middle of a police raid at their Ashkona hideout.

“At 3:30am [Saturday], I saw a missed call on my mobile phone,” said Trisha's father Abdus Samad. He thought the call came from a Bagmara hospital where his wife was admitted due to her illness.

He called back immediately. “Abba, can you recognise me ... I'm Trisha,” she told her father.

“I felt a chill down my spine as I talked to her. We've been looking for them [Trisha and her family] for so many months,” Samad told this correspondent.

Trisha told her father that police had cordoned off their house for their involvement with “Neo JMB” and asked him what she should do.

“I began shivering with fear when I heard about her links with militancy. I asked her to surrender before the police and tell them the truth,” said Samad, a fish trader, at his Saipara village home, around 40km from Rajshahi city.

He said Trisha was crying and suddenly hung up the phone. Hours later, she surrendered along with her four-month-old daughter.

Trisha again called him on Saturday evening and said she was in police custody. Two hours later, a police officer called him and asked him to go to Dhaka with clothes and food for Trisha's daughter, he said.

Obama Administration Yanks Second Amendment Rights from SSI Recipients
Last week, the Obama administration put the finishing touches on a new policy that would deprive recipients of disability insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) of their Second Amendment rights. The administration will now characterize those citizens as "mental defectives," thereby having their ability to own a firearm subject to the federal Gun Control Act.
Obviously if you want a firearm you are mentally defective.
Supplemental Security Income helps blind, disabled, and elderly people with little to no income. Previously, it was understood that "mentally defective" referred to one's mental health. Citizens who have been institutionalized against their will are restricted from owning a firearm. The new definition of "mentally defective" has nothing to do with being mentally ill.
Opposition to The Once is a mental disorder.
The Social Security Administration released its final decision after a period of open comments that drew more than 91,000 responses, including a response from the NRA. Although Obama likes to empty out Guantanamo Bay of dangerous terrorists and commute the sentences of criminals guilty of breaking federal firearms laws, he doesn't like law-abiding American citizens to possess firearms.

Burkina Faso replaces army chief after series of attacks
[REUTERS] Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
President Roch Marc Christian Kabore replaced army chief of staff Pingrenoma Zagre on Wednesday, the government said in a statement, after a string of deadly myrmidon attacks, including against the security forces.

The statement did not provide a reason for Zagre's replacement by Sadou Oumarou, formerly the inspector general of the armed forces, but military sources said the decision was prompted by the incidents.

Attacks in Burkina Faso were relatively rare before an attack by al Qaeda-linked fighters on a hotel in the capital, Ouagadougou, that killed 29 people in January.

Since then, the country has been hit by several attacks near its northern border with Mali, including one this month in which unidentified gunnies killed a dozen members of the army's special anti-terrorist group.

Islamist turbans are active in Mali, and Burkinabe authorities are concerned the long desert border between the two countries could become a transit point.

Burkina Faso's army is also dealing with the fallout from a failed coup attempt by elite presidential guard soldiers in September of last year.

The government said in October that it had foiled a new coup attempt by ex-members of the same unit, a pillar of former president Blaise Campaore's rule before he was ousted by demonstrators in 2014 over his attempts to change the constitution to prolong his 27 years in office.

Police declare war on cultism in Edo
[DAILYPOST.NG] The Police in Edo have declared war on cultism following the death of three persons due to cult-related killings in Benin, the capital City of Edo.
What kind of cult? Are these takfiri Moslems, killing any who are not pious emgh regarding the placement of cucumbers and tomatoes, or are they talking about witches or voodoo, where virgins or albinos are cut up for the magical properties of their parts?
The Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr Haliru Gwandu, stated this while confirming the killings to newsmen in Benin on Wednesday.

The commissioner said 51 suspects had been tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
since the renewed cult festivities on Christmas day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that three persons were killed in different parts of Benin on Wednesday.

One of the victims, identified as Godspower, was killed at about 4 a.m. in front of his residence on Second East Circular road, Benin.

The dear departed was scheduled to travel out of the country on Saturday. His bereaved mother, who refused to give her name, sat on a walkway and wept profusely.

She placed curses on her son’s killers before coppers came to take the corpse away. Witnesses said they heard Godspower begging for his life before he was shot.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Yellow Wolf clutched at his chest and fell from his horse...
a farmer, who identified himself as Joseph Agbonma, has sent a Save Our Soul message to the police to save his only son, Evans, from the hands of suspected cultists.

Agbonma said his son was attacked by suspected cultists at Ugbogui village where both of them worked as farmers.

He said his son escaped with serious injuries and appealed to the police to protect the man.

Major General Lucky Irabor, theatre commander of Nigeria's military campaign against the group, showed a news conference aerial footage he said was filmed during the operation in the Sambisa forest that showed Boko Haram fighters moving with women and kiddies.

"The haggard fighters were just using them as a shield," Irabor told news hounds in the northeastern city of Maiduguri. "That is why we did not engage them from the air."

"We had always believed and hoped that going into the Sambisa would afford us the opportunity to get the remaining Chibok girls. What we can't tell is whether those women we can see were the Chibok girls," he said.

Niger Says 31 Boko Haram Fighters Surrender
[AnNahar] Thirty-one Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters have surrendered to authorities in Niger, the West African country's interior minister Bazoum Mohammed announced Tuesday.

Boko Haram's seven-year insurgency began in Maiduguri, northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
but has since spread beyond its borders to Chad, Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
and Niger.

The 31 fighters gave up their arms in Diffa, a southeast region, Mohammed said on Twitter, the first time Niger authorities have reported such surrenders.

Boko Haram has been carrying out murderous attacks in Niger since February 2015.

"They came one by one and are currently held in a secure center," a security source based in Diffa told AFP, adding that they would return to their families after undergoing a "de-radicalization" program.

In January 2015, a bigwig in Diffa, said many young people were "increasingly attracted by the offers of Boko Haram", citing sums of up to 500 euros ($520) per month.

Niger, Chad and Nigeria launched simultaneous "sweep operations" against Boko Haram strongholds in July.

In October, the government in Niamey declared the "operations had given decisive results in liberating several localities formerly occupied by Boko Haram."

India-Pakistan
U.S. calls Pakistan student group wing of banned Lashkar-e-Taiba
[IN.REUTERS] The United States on Wednesday announced it was adding the student wing of the Pakistain-based krazed killer organization, Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
, to its list of "foreign terrorist organizations."

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), or Army of the Pure, is an anti-Indian krazed killer group with historical ties to Pakistain's top spy agencies. It has been accused of orchestrating numerous attacks, including a 2008 assault in Mumbai that killed 166 people, six of them Americans.

The State Department move against the student group, al-Muhammadia Students, came as the Treasury Department added two Lashkar-e-Taiba leaders to the U.S. list of "specially designated global terrorists," subjecting them to U.S. sanctions.

LeT was banned by the Pak government in 2002 but it has continued operating through front organizations, according to U.S. officials, and their leaders conduct public rallies and interviews.

The State Department announced that it amended the designation of LeT as a "foreign terrorist organization" to include what it called the group's student wing.

"Since the original designation occurred, LeT has repeatedly changed its name and created front organizations in an effort to avoid sanctions," the State Department said, adding that the student group aided senior LeT leaders in recruiting and other activities.

The State Department action subjected the student group to sanctions, including a ban on Americans providing or attempting to provide it with material support.

The Treasury Department said it was adding Muhammad Sarwar and Shahid Mahmood to the U.S. list of "specially designated global terrorists," freezing any U.S. property or other assets they hold and banning Americans from doing business with them. Both are involved in fund-raising activities, it said.

Government
Abolish the Department of Energy
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] When former Texas governor Rick Perry ran for president in 2012, he promised he'd abolish the U.S. Department of Energy (at least when he could remember it). Liberals wrote this off as typical conservative stupidity.

Why would anyone want to abolish the DOE? According to one liberal commentator, it was because the department "was established during Jimmy Carter
... the worst president ever. Maybe the second worst. The votes aren't all in yet...
's administration and it perhaps sounds like it might have something to do with solar panels."

Jimmy Carter created it, all right, but solar panels were only a symptom of the real problem. The DOE was conceived in dark and pessimistic beliefs and forecasts that have proven totally wrong. As Obama might say, the DOE is on the wrong side of history. As it stands the department needs to either be rethought or retired.

The original legislation justified a Department of Energy because, 1) we were rapidly running out of fossil fuels, especially oil and natural gas; 2) as a consequence of this we were becoming increasingly dependent on energy imports -- dependence that made us vulnerable to embargoes and political blackmail; and 3) so therefore we needed "a strong national [read government-directed] energy program."

Even before fracking proved the dire warnings to be utterly wrong, we had for the most part taken care of our energy dependence. We significantly reduced any possible vulnerability to an embargo by diversifying our suppliers; over sixty countries were supplying us with oil in the 2000s. Our No. 1 supplier? Canada. Mexico also has been in the top five. This information makes "foreign oil," a bit less scary, no?

Then again the fear of oil cartels was always overblown; from 1980 until the mid-2000s, oil importers like the U.S. thrived while the exporters were the ones who suffered because of excessive dependence on oil revenues.

In the meantime, we've endured wasteful, panicked policies such as massive subsidies for the wind and solar power, and electric cars. Worst of all, Congress has saddled consumers with ethanol subsidies and mandates. These boondoggles cost us billions of dollars, and none of them are commercially viable in their own right. In fact, the DOE has produced no dramatic breakthroughs in energy technology despite 40 years of trying (and failing) to pick winners.

The Grand Turk
Turkey puts broadcast ban on Russia envoy’s killing
Shhhh! It's a secret.
[Saudi Gazette] A Turkish court has put a broadcast ban on reporting of the investigation into last week’s murder of the Russian ambassador to Ankara Andrei Karlov, state media said on Tuesday.

A Turkish policeman opened fire on Karlov while he was delivering a speech at the opening of a photography exhibition, in an liquidation that stunned Russia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....

An Ankara court agreed to a request by prosecutors for a ban on broadcasting images of the liquidation -- which was caught on film -- as well as the investigation itself, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

This includes news concerning witnesses, victims or suspects in the murder.

The ruling said such news could be prejudicial to the investigation and to national security. The ban will last for the duration of the investigation.

It was not clear what had prompted the ban one week after the December 19 murder but it came one day after the daily Hurriyet published a detailed interview with the sister of the murderer Mevlut Mert Altintas.

The sister, named as Seher O., said her brother had been "brainwashed" while attending police school in Izmir.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
has said Altintas was a member of the group of US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
blamed for the July 15 coup.
However this has yet to be echoed by Russian officials, who say it is too early to comment on the investigation.

In recent years, Turkish authorities have repeatedly placed broadcast bans on sensitive issues and in the wake of attacks, citing national security.

Bangladesh
Musa told wife to blow herself up
[Bangla Daily Star] After police cordoned off the Ashkona myrmidon hideout early Saturday, Maynul Musa instructed his wife Trisha Moni to wear a boom jacket and blow up herself along with their four-month-old daughter instead of surrendering to law enforcers.

Trisha, however, did not carry out the instruction as her motherly love for the baby stopped her from detonating the vest.

So, she decided to surrender, according to her statement to an official of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the DMP during interrogation.

Sensing that police encircled the den, Trisha communicated with her husband using an encrypted messaging app and wanted his advice about the next course of action.

"Musa then asked his wife and all other women to wear the boom jackets and blow themselves up," the official said.

Musa took the helm of radical group "Neo JMB" as most of its top leaders died in anti-terror operations following the July 1 Gulshan café attack. The other top leaders are either tossed in the slammer
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
or under police surveillance, officials say.

The last time Musa visited the Ashkona flat on the ground floor of a three-storey building was on Tuesday when he brought bombs and grenades there.

Two other forces of Evil who go by the name of Firoz and Selim in theorganization also used to visit the den.

Replying to a query, the CTTC official said "Neo JMB" still has one expert bombmaker. Other bomb experts are dead or behind bars or on the run.

A police source said a myrmidon, aged around 18, managed to escape from the flat just before the operation.

Another woman, Jebunnahar Shila, widow of Major (retd) Jahid alias Murad, surrendered along with her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and with a 9mm pistol and six bullets during the anti-militant operation codenamed "Ripple 24".

According to CTTC officials, Trisha has expressed remorse for being within myrmidon circle. But Shila has not.

Also during the operation, a suspected myrmidon named Shakira detonated her boom jacket while rushing to police with her four-year-old daughter Sabina in an apparent motive to blow herself up in the midst of coppers. She was, however, still a few steps away from the law enforcers.

Shakira was killed in the blast with part of her body badly damaged and Sabina suffered severe injuries. A police official was also maimed.

"Analysing our intelligence and information from the forces of Evil who surrendered, it seems that the woman [Shakira] could carry out suicide kabooms with her daughter elsewhere [had she been alive]," CTTC unit chief Monirul Islam told news hounds at Ashkona yesterday evening as a search was going on in the den.

Shakira first married Iqbal, father of Sabina. After Iqbal died from cancer, she married Suman.

Suman, a suspected myrmidon, has been missing for over a month, the official added.

Around 7:30pm yesterday, a police team left the spot with the body of deceased myrmidon suspect, 14-year-old Afif Kaderi, for Dhaka Medical College morgue. Morgue sources said the body reached there around 11:30pm.

Afif, son of "Neo JMB" leader Tanvir Kaderi, who did away with himself during a raid at Azimpur on September 10, got killed around Saturday afternoon during the operation.

Rejecting the call for surrender, Afif shot up police, and the law enforcers retaliated by firing shots and gas grenades.

Officials say the boy did away with himself or died in the police firing.

Monirul said the forces of Evil burnt Tk 12 lakh, a laptop, some mobile phones and documents. It seems that they were using the hideout as their office, he added.

During the search starting at 10:30am yesterday, bomb disposal unit of the CTTC recovered seven grenades, two boom jackets -- one with six bombs and the other with four -- and two unwent kaboom! bombs from the vest that Shakira detonated.

Two 9mm pistols with two live ammunition, and huge bomb-making materials were also found at the den.

Officials later defused the grenades and bombs.

‘Neo JMB Leader' Musa: He covered his tracks to stay off dragnet
[Bangla Daily Star] Before leaving home for the so-called Jihad, runaway "Neo JMB" holy warrior Maynul Islam Musa destroyed everything that could link him to his home, so that law enforcers could not track him.

The last time Musa visited his village home at Baghmara in Rajshahi was in early April, just days before he went traceless. He had told people at home that he was going abroad.

He then destroyed all his photos and belongings there.

"His photographs were in our family albums. He cut those out one by one with a pair of scissors and set fire to those. He did not even leave one of his shirts for me before leaving," said his mother Sufia Akter.

"I do not have anything of my son," she sighed.

When asked about the reason, Musa told his mother, "Photographs will bring no good but sins."

Musa went to his in-laws place about 12km from his village home and destroyed all photos and belongings of him there as well, said his sister-in-law Nisha Moni.

According to police, Musa is one of the top leaders of "Neo JMB", who is trying to reorganise the outfit and carry out a assassination.

To cover his tracks, Musa, once an English teacher of Life School in Uttara-13 in Dhaka, destroyed documents and evidence from his Uttara home and the school before becoming traceless, his former colleagues and police said.

He was very active on social media but he removed his friends from his Facebook account and eventually deactivated his account.

"When his involvement in militancy came to light following the killing of Maj (retd) Jahid, I found his phone switched off. I tried to see his Facebook page but did not find it," one of his former colleagues at the school told The Daily Star preferring anonymity.

Major (retd) Jahid, who was killed in an anti-militancy drive in Mirpur on September 2, and Musa used to live in the same apartment building in Uttara. They had both left their homes almost at the same time.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
police found and recovered some information about Musa from the documents and computers police seized from the school in mid September.

The evidence allowed law enforcers to track Musa to the Ashkona den on Saturday. Musa managed to evade arrest that day during the counter terrorism unit-led operation codenamed "Ripple-24".

During the drive, a female holy warrior suspect, Shakira, killed herself by detonating a boom jacket while 14-year-old Afif Kaderi, son of slain holy warrior Tavir Kaderi, was killed in the shootout with police.

Before that, two female holy warriors, Musa's wife Trisha Moni; and Maj (retd) Jahid's widow Jebunnahar Shila, surrendered to police. Musa was then texting them to commit suicide.

MUSA LIED TO ALL
Days before going into hiding, Musa told his mother that he would go to Bahrain to work with one Bahrain expatriate Faisal.

After the death of his father Abul Kalam Azad in December last year, he went to his Buzrukkola village home to take Tk 3 lakh.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
he told Nisha that the Life School was sending him to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
"The school has similar institution in Saudi Arabia and he would be provided with a job there. We are in a hurry as the school authority gave us the offer but we have to collect certain amount of money within a given time," Nisha quoted Musa as saying.

Mizanur Rahman, principal of the school, told The Daily Star yesterday that they had no branches in or outside the country.

"We, eight people, have set up the school in 2014 investing our savings," he added.

Algeria Says 54,457 Tried for 'Terrorism' since 1990s
[AnNahar] Nearly 55,000 people accused of committing "terrorist offenses" have faced legal proceedings in Algeria since the country's devastating civil war in the 1990s, the justice minister has said.

It was the first such revelation by the authorities, which use the term "terrorists" for armed Islamists active in Algeria where the civil war killed 200,000 people.

The brutal conflict broke out between armed Islamist groups and security forces after the army canceled a 1992 election that Islamist politicians were poised to win. It ended when Algerians voted in a referendum in September 2005 to approve a reconciliation deal that led to 15,000 Islamists being pardoned in exchange for surrendering.

Justice Minister Tayeb Louh told parliament on Monday his ministry had set up a database on the number of people who have "faced legal proceedings for terrorist crimes." The database, set up in 2014, shows that from the 1990s to December 21 this year, authorities instigated legal proceedings against 54,457 people.

Louh said the number includes those who were pardoned under the terms of the referendum, but he did not spell out the exact nature of the proceedings, nor did he give details about the other cases.

Algeria has sentenced hundreds of people to death, but no execution has been carried out since 1993.

Groups affiliated to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) remain active in the northeast where they carry out regular attacks on the security forces.

Authorities have also reported attacks by the Jund al-Khilafa Death Eater movement which is linked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group.

More than 100 suspected Islamists have been killed by the Algerian army since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP count compiled from official statements.
If we assume this is the average over the past quarter century, the total number who died to make others Allah's slaves would be a mere 2,500. I suspect that number is off by quite a bit.

Afghanistan
Mullah Omar not visited Pakistan over the past 25 years, claims Taliban
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Taliban group founder and ex-supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar not visited Pakistain over the past 25 years, the Death Eater group claimed Wednesday.

The group released a statement to reject a report regarding a meeting between Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
and a Norwegian diplomat in a luxury hotel in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistain.

"A western newspaper ’The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
’ published a report citing a Norwegian diplomat ‐ Alf Arne Ramslien ‐ who claimed initially talking twice on the phone??? with the late Amir ul Mumineen Mullah Muhammad Omar Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) and even meeting him at a later stage in Pakistain during the year 2009. This report has then gone on to write many fabrications under this title," the statement said.

The statement further added "We categorically reject this report from start to end. The late Amir ul Mumineen Mullah Muhammad Omar (may Allah have mercy on him) had not visited Pakistain over the past 25 years nor did he talk with anyone via telephone following the American invasion. And neither did he have the habit of meeting with diplomats especially with foreign diplomats during the time of occupation when he had millions of dollars of bounty on his head."

According to the group "It is plausible that this diplomat has made such assertions for his own fame or that he was duped by some individual."

This comes as Taliban’s top commander Mullah Mansoor Dadullah confirmed earlier in August last year that Mullah Omar did not die naturally but was assassinated, confirming the reports suggesting Mullah Omar was mysteriously killed in April 2013 in a hospital in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
city of Pakistain.

Mansoor Dadullah is the brother of the former senior Taliban capo Mullah Dadullah who was actively operating in southern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province before he was killed during an operation in Helmand province in 2007.

The Afghan Intelligence ‐ National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) earlier said Monday the Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar was mysteriously killed in a hospital in Karachi city of Pakistain.

Mullah Omar’s death was first confirmed by a splinter group of the Taliban ‐ Afghanistan Islamic Movement Fidai Mahaz, which claimed that he was assassinated Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansoor and Gull Agha.

The group’s front man Qari Hamza said last year Mullah Omar was killed two years ago in the month of July.

Myanmar men may face jail for not marrying pregnant women
[YAHOO] Myanmar's government is drafting a law that could see men tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
for up to seven years for getting a woman pregnant but not marrying her, a bigwig said on Wednesday.

The provision is part of tough new legislation designed to strengthen women's rights as the country opens up after half a century of military rule.

Director of the social welfare department Naw Tha Wah said the new law would criminalise domestic violence for the first time and make gang-rape a capital offence.

If passed in parliament, the law would also carry a penalty of up to five years in prison for any man who refuses to marry a woman after they have lived together, and up to seven if she is pregnant.

"We are now drafting a bill to protect women and prevent violence against them," Naw Tha Wah told AFP.

"Women can complain if they are bullied into not getting married after living together. We will give them protection under the law."

Buddhist-majority Myanmar is a socially conservative country, where gender stereotypes are deeply entrenched and sex remains a taboo topic.

The Burmese language has no word for female genitalia and any garments worn on a woman's lower half are considered unclean, meaning they must be washed separately from men's clothes.

Europe
Berlin attack suspect better connected to extremists than thought
[DW] Christmas market attack suspect Anis Amri visited 15 mosques in Germany and had contact with two men with ties to IS, according to a media report. Security authorities also reportedly labeled him a threat back in May.

The state criminal investigation office in Dusseldorf classified him as a threat on May 10.

The profile stated that Amri behaved in an especially conspiratorial manner when he was in Berlin and had frequent contact with people who security services said had ties to the radical Salafist-Islamist scene. Two of the men Amri came into contact with were under suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.

Back in North Rhine-Westphalia, Amri also had two contacts in Dortmund who had ties to the so-called krazed killer "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
" (IS) group, the report said.

On October 13, 2016, surveillance information gathered by state-level security authorities was supposed to be passed on to Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), WDR's "Aktuelle Stunde" reported. Domestic intelligence work in Germany is generally conducted by authorities in the country's 16 states.

Revelations that Amri had been on a federal list of persons regarded as a potential threat and had been monitored by authorities for months has prompted sharp criticism toward security failures in Germany.

Amri is suspected of driving a truck into a crowded Berlin Christmas market last Monday, killing 12 people and wounding 48 others.

IS grabbed credit for the Berlin attack, while German authorities are investigating to what extent Amri may have received support before or after the assault.

German authorities detain man for possible link to Berlin attack

[Ynet] German authorities detained a Tunisian man who may have been involved in last week's attack on a Berlin Christmas market in which 12 people died, prosecutors said on Wednesday. The suspected attacker, Anis Amri, a rejected asylum seeker from Tunisia, had the mobile phone number of the 40-year old Tunisian, whom they did not name, stored in his telephone, prosecutors said. Officials raided his home and business premises, they said.

"Further investigations indicated that he could have been involved in the attack," said prosecutors, adding that he was arrested. "To what extent suspicions against the arrested person will be hardened up remains to be seen after further investigation," said the prosecutors, adding they would decide by the end of Thursday whether to issue an arrest warrant for him

Berlin Attacker Took Bus from Netherlands to France

[AnNahar] Suspected Berlin truck attacker Anis Amri traveled by bus from the Netherlands to France before heading to Italy where police shot him dead, sources close to the investigation said Wednesday.

Two days after the December 19 attack on a Christmas market in Berlin left 12 dead, the 24-year-old Tunisian boarded an overnight bus at the Dutch city of Nijmegen, near the German border, that took him to Lyon in central France, one of the sources said, confirming a French media report.

Wim de Bruin, spokesman for the Dutch public prosecution service told AFP: "We believe he was in Nijmegen, most likely last Wednesday."

"There are video images and it's very likely him," De Bruin said, adding that "it's most likely here where he received a SIM card," which Italian police later found on his body.

Amri got off the bus at the Lyon-Part-Dieu rail station, another source said. Surveillance cameras filmed Amri at the station last Thursday.

From there, he took a train to the French Alpine town of Chambery before heading to Milan, in northern Italy.

Italian police shot Amri dead in the early hours of Friday after he fired at officers who had stopped him for a routine identity check.

A train ticket from Lyon to Milan via Turin was found on his body.

Abu Sayyaf bandit tagged in Samal kidnapping arrested in Sulu
[NEWS.ABS-CBN] A suspected member of Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
Group who was allegedly involved in the Samal Island kidnapping incident was enjugged
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
in Talipao, Sulu late last week.

Chief Inspector Norlito Mata, the chief of Talipao Municipal Police Station, identified the suspect as Arkam Baridji, who was identified as one of those who participated in the kidnapping of three foreigners and a Filipina from a resort.

The captives included Canadians John Ridsdel and Robert Hall, Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, and Filipina Marites Flor.

Ridsdel and Hall were killed by the bandidos after their families failed to meet ransom demands.

Flor was released in June 2016, while Sekkingstad followed after three months.

Mata said they established a security checkpoint in Sitio Bayog, Barangay Samak, where they apprehended Baridji and his lover companion, identified as Arnajel Dahim.

Police officers seized a revolver and ammunition from Dahim. They also found 4 sachets of alleged "shabu" on the suspect.

Baridji and Dahim were brought to the municipal cop shoppe for investigation.

Mata said they were able to verify the identity of Baridji, who has a standing arrest warrant for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

Baridji was temporarily detained at the Jolo Municipal Police Station before being transported to Panabo City, Davao del Norte for court hearings.

The police also filed criminal cases against Dahim for illegal possession of firearms and illegal drugs.

Europe
Czech Republic to fight 'fake news' with special unit
[The Grauniad] The Czech government is to set up a specialist “anti-fake news” unit as officials attempt to tackle falsehoods, predominantly about migrants, which they claim are spread by websites supported by the government of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Why would the Russians spread lies about migrants in Europe, when the truth is horrible enough?
The new unit will aim to counteract interference in the Czech Republic’s forthcoming general election, to be held in October, amid polling evidence that online disinformation is influencing public opinion and threatening to destabilise the country’s democratic system, established after the fall of communism in 1989.

Although definite links are hard to prove, officials say they are convinced the Kremlin is behind about 40 Czech-language websites presenting radical views, conspiracy theories and inaccurate reports. The officials believe the objective is to transform the Czech Republic’s current status as a western-aligned country.

Part of the interior ministry, the new Centre Against Terrorism and Hybrid Threats will begin operating on 1 January with 20 full-time specialists. They will be based in the building that was used as an interrogation centre by the former communist regime’s secret police during the cold war, when the former Czechoslovakia was a close ally of the Soviet Union. The specialists will scrutinise disinformation and attempt to counter it, via a dedicated Twitter account and a new section of the interior ministry website devoted to communicating the government viewpoint. The centre will also train civil servants to avoid blackmail and resist foreign lobbying.

The Czech fears echo those voiced by Germany’s domestic intelligence chief that Russia-linked “fake news” sites could interfere with its election. Claims have also been made of Russian cyber activity aimed at influencing last month’s US presidential election in favour of Donald Trump.

The new “anti-fake news” centre has drawn accusations that it will result in censorship, spying and a crackdown on free speech – a charge rebutted by its supervisors.

Online agitation in the Czech Republic has been particularly influential during the refugee crisis, coinciding with a spate of anti-Islam rallies typically attended by protesters carrying placards denouncing the EU, Nato and Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor. It has fuelled public fears of terrorism and of an influx of people from the Middle East, even though the Czech Republic has only a tiny Muslim population and has been largely unaffected by the refugee crisis.

Efforts to uncover the origins of sites such as AE News have failed. “It is so well secured that Czech journalists have not been able to find out who is behind it,” said Jakub Janda, deputy director of the Prague-based European Values thinktank, which runs a programme called Kremlin Watch.

But intelligence officials and seasoned politicians have little doubt. They blame elements among the Czech Republic’s estimated 45,000-strong Russian community and Russia’s sprawling Prague embassy – a legacy of the cold war.

Moscow provides the “most active foreign intelligence services” on Czech soil, according to the Czech Republic’s domestic security agency, BIS, whose most recent annual report describes Russian espionage activities as geared towards “fabricating disinformation” and promoting the motto that “everybody is lying”.

The agency has complained about the number of Russian diplomats in the Czech Republic – estimated at between 130 and 150, double the number of Americans present – and says many are operating as undercover spies.

Ivan Gabal, an independent MP and deputy chairman of the parliamentary defence committee, advocates expelling Russian citizens convicted of peddling fake news and ejecting Moscow’s diplomats suspected of spying.

“This country strived for 20 years after communism to create an open, democratic society that’s part of the west, and now we have achieved a recognised place in the free world, we’re not going to give it up for some KGB guy,” he said, referring to Putin’s past career in the Soviet intelligence services.

“He is looking to break Europe up into elementary member states that compete with each other for Russian resources and influence. The risk is great. They feel we still belong to their sphere of influence. We are a bigger threat to them than Britain, because we’ve only been democratic for 25 years and we’re proof that it’s possible to transition from totalitarianism to an open society.”

#1  So...
The Kremlin is putting out news that is aligned with the core of capitalist reality (Ricardo's law).
Yet the West should be based on ignorance of Ricardo's Law?!?

Truly the western establishment are getting hopelessly desperate in their attempts to continue their parasitism.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela: military trafficking food
The late President Hugo Chavez created a Food Ministry in 2004. His socialist government nationalized and then neglected farms and factories, and domestic production dried up. When the price of oil collapsed in 2014, the government no longer could afford to import all the country needed.

Hungry Venezuelans began rioting, and so Maduro handed the generals complete power over food. The government now imports nearly all the country’s food, and corruption drives prices sky-high. With much of the oil country on the verge of starvation and malnourished children dying in pediatric wards, food trafficking has become big business in Venezuela. And the military is at the heart of the graft, according to documents and interviews with more than 60 officials, company owners and workers, including five former generals.

One South American businessman says he paid millions in kickbacks to Venezuelan officials as the hunger crisis worsened, including $8 million to people who work for the food minister, Gen. Rodolfo Marco Torres. The businessman insisted on speaking anonymously because he did not want to acknowledge participating in corruption. He explained that vendors like him can afford to pay off officials because they build large profit margins into what they bill the state.

The socialist administration says it takes graft seriously.

“The state has an obligation to root out corruption in all levels of public administration,” the defense minister, Gen. Vladimir Padrino Lopez, said this fall.

And yet dirty dealing persists from the port to the markets, according to dozens of people working in Puerto Cabello, which handles the majority of imported food. Officials sometimes keep ships waiting at sea until they are paid off, according to a stevedore who spoke anonymously because he feared losing his job. After the cargo is unloaded, customs officials take their cut, refusing to even start the process of nationalizing goods without a payment, four customs workers said. The corruption doesn’t stop once cargo leaves the port, according to truck drivers. The military has set up checkpoints along highways to catch food traffickers, and truck drivers say they have to pay bribes at about half of them.

At the end of the food chain, some soldiers partake in selling food directly to citizens, according to business owners. Bakery owner Jose Ferreira cuts two checks for each purchase of sugar: one for the official price of 2 cents a pound and one for the kickback of 60 cents a pound. He keeps copies of both checks in his books in case he is ever audited.

In large part due to concerns of graft, the three largest global food traders, all based in the U.S., have stopped selling directly to the Venezuelan government. The U.S. government has taken notice. Prosecutors have opened investigations against senior Venezuelan officials for laundering riches from food contracts through the U.S. financial system, according to several people with direct knowledge of the probes. No charges have been brought.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News
Iraqi militiaman dies in ISIS attack in Bawiza

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One army soldier was killed and four others, including two militia fighters, were wounded when Islamic State fighters attacked government forces and popular militias north of Mosul.

Zoheir al-Jubouri, spokesperson of the Nineveh Guards militia, said in press statements that a soldier from the army’s 16th division was killed, two other army officers and two from his forces were wounded when militants waged a violent attack on the forces at Bawiza, north of the city. He said air force and artillery backup helped the forces push militants back and destroy vehicles they were planning to use to bring down security barricades.

Earlier, Rudaw agency quoted Col. Mohamed al-Wakka, an officer at the media office of government military operations in Nineveh, as saying that Iraqi forces foiled an attack by IS in Baawiza. “A number of IS( militants) were killed during the encounters, and 3-4 booby-trapped vehicles were also destroyed before they were used in the attack.”

On the western front, Kataeb Hezbollah, a militia operating as part of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units), rebuffed another attack near the strategic IS stronghold of Tal Afar. The group said a number of militants were either killed or wounded, while several vehicles belonging to the militants were destroyed.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in statements on Tuesday that defeating IS needs three extra months. He had previously hoped the battle would wrap up before the end of 2016. His comments are more optimistic than US coalition commanders who envision victory within two years at least. Iraqi generals have said they now control a quarter of Mosul (or 40 districts out of 56 in the east), but the extremist group still bombs and launches suicide attacks on liberated areas.

ISIS remains in control of some areas of the western section, which is adjacent to its strongholds in Syria. But PMU forces say they are ready for liberating ISIS locations in that region, saying the area had been isolated from Syria, depriving the group of supplies from Syria.

The battles for Mosul has forced 137.000 people to flee homes to refugee camps, according to the latest count by the Ministry of Migration and Displacement.

Sniper downs ISIS kommander's son in Tal Afar

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A state of tension is predominating the western town of Tal Afar, Mosul, after the assassination of the town’s Islamic State-appointed wali (governor), with several armed groups belonging to the group deployed in the streets.

A local source told Alsumaria News that Ossama, the son of Abul Alaa al-Atri, was shot dead by a sniper near his residence. He said the incident infuriated the militants who blamed local fighters from the group for the killing.

Local sources had said earlier this month that divisions grew among IS fighters as the group’s supreme leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, had excluded Iraqi fighters from commanding the current battles with Iraqi government and popular forces, instead assigning foreign fighters to the lead.

In November, Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) declared the recapture of Tal Afar airport from IS, and have been besieging the town since then preparing to storm the town’s center. The town has become isolated from IS strongholds in Syria as well as from Iraq.

Iraqi government forces are fighting in eastern Mosul, and have so far liberated 40 out of 56 districts. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Tuesday that the battle to retake Mosul could last for three extra months.

Nijm al-Jubouri, commander of the army’s operations in Mosul, said in statements on Wednesday that reinforcements have arrived to the city to resume the liberation of eastern Mosul districts, adding that progress have stalled over the past few days pending orders to move on and also due to bad weather conditions.

Iraqi forces repel massive ISIS attack in Tel Keppe and al-Hadba

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Commander of Nineveh Operations announced on Wednesday repulsing an attack launched by 100 fighters of the Islamic State in northern Mosul, while emphasized that heavy losses were inflicted on the enemy.

Major General Najim al-Jabouri, in a press interview, said, “This morning, 100 fighters of the Islamic State launched an attack on our forces from Tel Keppe and al-Hadba in northern Mosul, backed by five vehicles, including two car bombs, and two armored bulldozers.”

“The joint security forces managed to repulse the attack, as well as inflicting heavy human and material losses on the Islamic State,” Jabouri added.

“Fighter jets and smart artillery of the international coalition were also used to repulse the attack,” Jabouri explained.

“The Islamic State tried to take advantage of the bad weather to attack the forces,” he further added.

The province of Nineveh witnessed wide-scale military operations since October 17, to retake the city of Mosul that was captured by the Islamic state in June 2014.

Baghdadi's assistant captured in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A security source in Nineveh Province revealed on Wednesday, that security forces managed to arrest the assistant of the Islamic State’s Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in the eastern side of Mosul, Almada Press reported on Thursday.

The source said, “Yesterday, security forces managed to arrest the terrorist Abu Harith al-Matuiti, the assistant of the Islamic State’s Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in Hayy al-Bakr areas in the eastern side of Mosul, based on accurate intelligence information.”

“The terrorist was arrested after besieging the house of al-Matuiti,” the source added on condition of anonymity.

“We Are Coming, Nineveh” operations were launched in October 17, and succeeded to liberate several areas of the province, and the majority of the eastern side of Mosul.

60 ISIS Bad Guys die in attack on Iraqi forces in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) The army’s 16th brigade announced on Wednesday, that the Islamic State group launched an attack north of Mosul, while security forces repulsed the attack and destroyed five vehicles.

Army official, Major General Ali al-Farigi, in a press statement, said, “Troops of the army’s 16th brigade managed to repulse a violent attack launched by the Islamic State on the area of Bawizah, north of Mosul, killing 60 IS militants.”

“The security forces destroyed five vehicles driven by suicide bombers, after repulsing the attack,” Farigi added.

“We Are Coming, Nineveh” operations were launched in October 17, and succeeded to liberate several areas of the province, and the majority of the eastern side of Mosul.

Airstrikes on Mosul destroys bridge

BAGHDAD: Residents of Iraq’s Daesh-held city of Mosul said on Wednesday that an airstrike disabled the city’s last functioning bridge across the Tigris River, forcing residents to cross the river in boats and further disrupting the Daesh group’s movement.

The residents, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity fearing for their safety, said the airstrike happened at dawn on Monday.

Four of them have now been bombed in airstrikes since the massive government military operation began on Oct. 17, while one was disabled weeks before the operation began.

The Tigris River runs through the center of Mosul, and until now most of the fighting has been on the eastern bank. Iraqi forces are expected to use pontoon bridges when they reach the river as they have done in previous military operations in other areas.

Fighting on all fronts, but centered mainly on Mosul’s eastern edge, has slowed recently as suicide car bombings, snipers and concern over the safety of civilians have hampered the Iraqi troops’ advance toward the city center.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi had earlier said Daesh had launched more than 900 car bombs against Iraqi troops so far during the Mosul operations, but didn’t give details on how many were driven by suicide bombers or were blown up before reaching their targets.

The offensive “is continuing ... God willing, there will be good news in the coming days,” Al-Abadi added.

Mosul, about 360 km northwest of Baghdad, is Iraq’s second-largest city and the last major Daesh urban bastion of their self-styled caliphate in the country. It fell into the hands of Daesh militants during their June 2014 onslaught that left the group in control of large swaths of northern and western Iraq.

Europe
Europe migrant colonist briefs
Greece to Give Migrants IDs, Cash

[AnNahar] Greece wants to give electronic ID cards and cash to thousands of refugees and migrants trapped on its soil, the migration minister said Wednesday.

"(By April) we intend to register all refugees and migrants in Greece... in camps, hotels and flats, and give them electronic identity cards," Yiannis Mouzalas told a news conference.

"This will show their legal status, and where they are" in the country, he said.

Mouzalas added that, by March, the government plans to give cash handouts of up to 400 euros ($418) a month to enable migrant families to fend for themselves. Mouzalas did not clarify how austerity-wracked Greece intended to fund the handout scheme, but Athens has generally relied on the EU for such financing.

Greece says it has over 60,000 mainly Syrian refugees and migrants trapped on its soil, after Balkan and EU countries further north shut their borders last year. Most are lodged in 34 camps around the country, run with the help of EU funds and support from the UN refugee agency, the Red Cross and other organizations.

54,000 Migrants in Germany Get Grant to Return Home in 2016
But did they actually leave?
[AnNahar] German authorities say more than 54,000 migrants, including failed asylum-seekers, received approval for government funding to return to their homeland this year, paving the way for a significant increase in voluntary departures. Germany is keen to increase the number of rejected would-be refugees leaving the country after last year's influx of 890,000 migrants.

Interior Ministry spokesman Harald Neymanns said Wednesday that the total funding approved for returnees this year was 21.5 million euros ($22.5 million). He said about 35,500 people obliged to leave Germany did so voluntarily in 2015, but noted that the two figures can't immediately be compared because the number of people who actually departed in 2016 isn't yet clear. Neymanns stressed that Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere "has always said voluntary returns are always preferable to deportation."

Spain arrests two men suspected of Islamist militant propaganda
One hopes cell phones and computers were picked up as well, leading to further arrests in due time.
28.12.16
[Ynet] Two men were arrested in Madrid on Wednesday on suspicion of spreading Islamist militant propaganda, the Interior Ministry said. Police released video footage in connection with the arrests that showed officers uncovering gun magazines and bullets from under rocks in a disused, graffiti-sprayed building. El Pais newspaper quoted the Interior Ministry as saying the search, in the outskirts of Madrid, uncovered four Kalashnikov AK-47 magazines and over 30 bullets. The paper said the men were second generation Spaniards of Moroccan and Gambian origin.

Caribbean-Latin America
As socialism shattered Venezuela, the useful idiots applauded
[BOSTONGLOBE] In a Salon piece titled "Hugo Chavez’s economic miracle," David Sirota declared that the Venezuelan ruler, with his "full-throated advocacy of socialism," had "racked up an economic record that . . . American president[s] could only dream of achieving." The Guardian offered "Three cheers for Chavez." Moviemaker Oliver Stone filmed a documentary gushing over "the positive changes that have happened economically in all of South America" because of Venezuela’s socialist government. And when Chavez died in 2013, Jimmy Carter
... the worst president ever. Maybe the second worst. The votes aren't all in yet...
extolled the strongman for "improving the lives of millions of his fellow countrymen."

In the real world, however, socialism has transformed Venezuela into a Third World dystopia.

Venezuela this Christmas is sunk in misery, as it was last Christmas, and the Christmas before that. Venezuelans, their economy wrecked by statism, face crippling shortages of everything from food and medicine to toilet paper and electricity. Violent crime is out of control. Shoppers are forced to stand in lines for hours outside drugstores and supermarkets -- lines that routinely lead to empty shelves, or that break down in fistfights, muggings, and mob looting. Just last week the government deployed 3,000 troops to restore order after frantic rioters rampaged through shops and homes in the southeastern state of Bolivar.

In the beautiful country that used to boast the highest standard of living in Latin America, patients now die in hospitals for lack of basic health care staples: soap, gloves, oxygen, drugs. In some medical wards, there isn’t even water to wash the blood from operating tables.

Socialism invariably kills and impoverishes. Gushing oil revenues amid a global energy boom could temporarily disguise the corrosion caused by a government takeover of market functions. But only temporarily. The Chavez/Maduro "Bolivarian revolution" has been economic poison, just like every other Marxist "revolution" from Lenin’s Russia to Kim Il Sung’s North Korea to the Castros’ Cuba. By shredding property rights, dictating prices, and trying to control supply and demand, socialist regimes eventually make everything worse and virtually everyone poorer. Conversely, when governments protect free markets and allow buyers and sellers to interact freely, prosperity expands.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Held by Shin Bet, top Hamas official reveals vital tunnel intel
[IsraelTimes] Bilal Razaineh, who was detained as he entered Israel in November, providing info on underground passages, terror group’s positions and operatives.

A high-ranking Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", operative was tossed in the clink
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
by Israeli security last month after crossing the border from the Gazoo Strip into Israel, the Shin Bet security agency said in a statement Wednesday, announcing that his interrogation provided vast intelligence concerning the Paleostinian terror group’s operations in the coastal enclave.

Bilal Razaineh, 24, was interrogated by Israel’s internal security agency after he was caught attempting to enter Israeli territory on November 27. Razaineh has reportedly been a member of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, for nearly a decade, and his interrogation yielded information about the terror group’s tunnel-digging operations beneath the Gazoo Strip.

According to the Shin Bet, Razaineh was involved in Hamas’s military operations, including tunnel digging and sniper training. He provided Israel with intelligence concerning Hamas tunnel routes in the northern Gazoo Strip and the manner in which Hamas is excavating its subterranean networks, as well insider information about Hamas positions and operatives, the Shin Bet said.

His brother, Mustafa Razaineh, is a high-ranking member of the group’s armed wing. As head of Mustafa’s security, he had access to a high level of security. Both are considered high-ranking operatives.

According to a December 1 report from Egyptian news site al-Mogaz, Razaineh fled the Gazoo Strip amid an internal investigation into allegations of corruption in the inner circles of Hamas’s top security officials.

Investigators learned from Razaineh about Hamas’s use of civilian facilities for military purposes. The Razaineh family home served a base for tunnel construction and arms storage, and Mustafa Razaineh and other high-ranking Hamas operatives hid in the Kamel Adwan hospital in the Gazoo Strip during 2014’s Operation Protective Edge, from which they commanded operations for the war against the IDF.

The Shin Bet filed charges against Razaineh in the Beersheba District Court on Wednesday, which including membership in a terrorist organization and arms-related offenses.

News of Razaineh’s disappearance was reported in the Paleostinian press in early December, which came as a surprise to Hamas officials.

Mustafa Razaineh, according to a Fatah report, was an Israeli informant during the 2014 war in the Gazoo Strip.

A few days after Razaineh fled the Gazoo Strip, two other high-ranking Hamas operatives entered Israel, a Jordanian news report said in early December.
An Nahar adds:
Gazoo interior ministry front man Iyad al-Bozum said the man tossed in the clink
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
was in his 20s but that he were tossed into the calaboose when approaching the border on the Gazook side of the fence.

He said his brother worked in the interior ministry, without providing further details, but added that the man had mental health problems and was not in contact with the Gazoo security services
