#2  I've always wondered why the bouncing ball. Wouldn't it be better to use a bit more fuel and control the descent to an exact spot? Or have an airbag that deflates immediately instead of bouncing, again so you land at an exact spot?

That's fuel you've to carry with you for 100,000,000 km, rjschwarz.

#6  I would think the bouncy ball was because they could not predict where the craft would land with any accuracy - unlike with the moon lander mars is a lot bigger and has an atmosphere which injects all sorts of variables. Also a 'controlled' landing is a lot more riskier than simply bouncing it. There isn't any ground control there and the link to earth is fragile - and includes a lag (6 or 7 minutes??)...

Also..Marvin the Martian still hasn't built that damn runway.

Britain
al-Guardian has a >$200M Loss for 2015 with more for 2016
[FinancialTimes] Guardian Media Group (GMG)'s total pre-tax loss will hit £173m as the group belatedly writes down about £80m in the value of its stake in Ascential, the publicly quoted magazine and events company, and takes a £20m restructuring charge over severance payments....

About 270 employees in the UK have agreed voluntary redundancy and GMG is also closing 60 unfilled vacancies. This equates to 20 per cent of the UK workforce...

The Grand Turk
The Gülen Factor: Erdoğan, the Coup, and the United States
[Counter Punch] Engaged in his dirty spate of housecleaning under the auspices of protecting the constitution and the Turkish state, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues to insist on one vital scalp in his enterprise.

Thus far, the cleric Fethullah Gulen has eluded Ankara from his abode in Pennsylvania. From his base, something of a global network has been constructed, one discernable through foundations and an assortment of endeavours pursued under the guise of a faith movement. These do not attest to the spirit of a pacifist warrior, averse to revolution. They suggest influence, and the markings of power.

For the cleric’s enemies, there is much to be said that he has profited from the land of the free, seething about an individual he once desired to share power with. Notions of democracy are distant here; more significant is a distinct appraisal of power padded by such notions as "liberal" and "moderate". These are the necessary marketing tools for a political figure in exile.

The cleric’s movement, Hizmet, prides itself on sponsoring education and running programs heavy with the anti-radicalization agenda. His opponents, such as attorney Robert Amsterdam, retained by Ankara to investigate alleged financial misconduct in the United States, suggest that the movement’s leader "is a money-laundering criminal" (Foreign Policy, Jul 18).

Politics can be a dirty thing indeed, and in the case of Hizmet, education via some hundreds of charter schools in the United States has become an enterprise of channelling and re-directing to the Gulenistas.

It is closer to the model of a personally run empire of multiple mini enterprises and mini initiatives with the ability to skim funds from any and all. It is somewhat like a cross between Scientology, the Clinton Global Foundation and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Fethullah Gülen Issued Statement On the Orlando shooting attack
[Hizmet Movement News Portal - 17 June 2016] I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific attack that took place in Orlando, the deadliest mass shooting in United States history. I unequivocally condemn this hate-driven terrorist attack and I share my revolt and disgust with billions of people around the world.

Media reports stated that the attacker pledged allegiance to ISIS on the night of the attack. The totalitarian mentality that characterizes terrorist groups like ISIS should be treated like a cancer within our societies and countered through political, social and religious efforts.

To the family and friends of the deceased, I send my sincerest condolences and pray that in the collective consciousness of humanity, the values of mutual respect and commitment to the dignity of every human life triumph over fear and hate.

Very interesting web site. Little wonder Erdogan wants him extradited.

Australia clamp down on convicted terrorists
[SouthAfricaToday] Convicted terrorists in Australia could be kept in prison after serving their sentences if they are deemed a continued threat, according to new anti-terrorism laws announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Monday.

“We are focussed constantly on the single most important obligation of our government, which is to preserve and protect the safety of the people,” Turnbull said.

The process would be overseen by the courts and be subject to periodic reviews and legal appeals, Australia’s Attorney-General George Brandis said.

It would be similar to existing laws concerning the detention of sex offenders and violent criminals deemed an ongoing threat.

Under the proposed anti-terrorism laws, the age at which children could be held would be lowered from 16 to 14.

A total 44 people have been charged with terrorism-related offences in Australia since 2014, including some involved in the planning of mass attacks on the public, Turnbull said.

Turkish newspaper names US general as ‘leader' of failed coup attempt
[news.com.au] TURKEY's former anti-terrorism chief has warned that an article accusing a US general of orchestrating the failed coup represents a serious threat to US citizens. Turkey, which has declared a three-month state of emergency after a failed coup attempt on July 15, admits to having detained more than 13,000 people in the military, judiciary and other institutions.

The wave of arrests, possibly much higher than the official figure, has alarmed NATO allies and European leaders with fears the moves represent an attempt by Turkey's controversial President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to cement his hold on power and remove all forms of opposition.

Turkish officials insist that the purge of all levels of society is necessary to protect its democracy from threats both within and without.

And it seems it believes the United States is one such threat.

Professor Ahmet Yayla, Former Chief of Counter-terrorism for the Turkish National Police and a member of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism, has pointed to today’s front page of a pro-Erdogan newspaper as a major and dangerous escalation in rhetoric.

The Yeni Safak newspaper appeared on news stands today with the headline "This man led the coup", accusing United States Army General J.F. Campbell of commanding the uprising a little more than a week ago.

#2  Why is Erdogan so butt hurt over Gülen, scholars, academicians?

Gülen is an Erdogan rival who leads a popular movement called Hizmet (The Service). Hizmet includes hundreds of secular co-ed schools, free tutoring centres, hospitals and relief agencies credited with addressing Turkey’s social problems.

Gülen is an Islamic scholar, preacher and social advocate, whose decades‐long commitment to interfaith tolerance and altruism has inspired millions in Turkey and around the world. Gülen is the honorary chairman of the Rumi Forum, Washington, DC; the Intercultural Dialogue Platform, Brussels, Belgium; and the Foundation of Journalists and Writers, Istanbul, Turkey.

Everyone knows these are tasks which should be handled by big government. Unfortunately, Erdogan believes it should be his big government and not ours.

President Obama: ‘I'm a better president than I ever has been'
[Wash Times] Just as his second term is winding down, President Obama says he really has hit his stride in office.

In an interview broadcast Sunday, the president painted an optimistic picture about the state of the country, saying his team is "operating at peak level."

"I feel as if I’m a better president than I’ve ever been," Mr. Obama said on CBS's "Face the Nation." "That the experience has made me sharper, clearer about how to get stuff done."

He also said the recent terrorist attacks -- such as the one Friday in Munich, Germany, in which nine were killed and 27 injured -- does not confirm the bleak outlook painted by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Mr. Obama said the American people are "more safe" now than before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

#DemExit: Bernie Supporters React to #DNCLeaks
[LI] Kemberlee reported that leaked emails put out by Wikileaks suggested that DNC scuttled the Bernie Sanders campaign and were targeting his religion as part of their plans.

Hillary probably wishes these email were the ones deleted, as they clearly show that instead of treating Sanders as serious candidate for the Democratic ticket, the DNC worked against him and his campaign to ensure Clinton received the nomination.

One email from DNC Deputy Communications Director Eric Walker to several DNC staffers cites two news articles showing Sanders leading in Rhode Island and the limited number of polling locations in the state: "If she outperforms this polling, the Bernie camp will go nuts and allege misconduct. They’ll probably complain regardless, actually."

Instead of treating Sanders with impartiality, the DNC exhibits resentful disdain toward him and the thousands of disenfranchised voters he could have brought into the party.

...The release provides further evidence the DNC broke its own charter violations by favoring Clinton as the Democratic presidential nominee, long before any votes were cast.

Democratic convention draws thousands of protesters to Philadelphia
[Guardian] Thousands of demonstrators took to the sweltering streets of Philadelphia on Sunday, chanting and beating drums in the first major protests ahead of the Democratic national convention.

Throngs of clean energy activists jammed a major thoroughfare in a mile-long march from city hall to Independence Mall, near the Liberty Bell. They held anti-fracking and anti-pipeline signs, some with illustrations such as a train surrounded by a fireball and the words "No Exploding Trains". Others held "Bernie or Bust" signs.

Sam Miller, 82, had traveled from Erie, Pennsylvania, to join the march that stretched several blocks and across a wide street as temperatures in the city soared into the mid-90s. He said he was inspired because "fracking is invading Mother Earth".

As in Cleveland around the Republican convention this week, police were using bicycles as barricades and volunteers were handing out water to marchers. Shoppers came out of stores to watch the march.

Chants of "Bernie! Bernie!" were met by counter echoes of "Hillary! Hillary!"

Munich's balcony man: 'I would have shot him if I'd had a gun'
[Mail] A man who confronted the Munich killer from the balcony of his flat has told Mail Online he would have shot the killer if he had a gun.

Thomas Salbey, who has become known as the 'balcony man' after his profanity-laced exchange with killer Ali Sonboly went viral, said he wished he could have fired back at the killer.

'All I had was a beer bottle to throw at him. If I had a gun I would have shot him I'd have shot him in the head,' Mr Salbey told Mail Online.

'What I said to him at the time still holds true. He is a coward who killed innocent people because he was not right in the head. He disgusts me,' he said.

Mr Salbey was on the balcony of his fifth floor flat overlooking the parking garage at the Olympic shopping centre on Friday. He had heard the initial burst of gunfire after 18-year-old Sonboly shot teens at a McDonald's restaurant having lured them there using a fake Facebook page with the promise of free food.

Sonboly continued his rampage through the shopping centre before emerging on the concrete upper floor of the garage. Nine people were killed and ten others injured by German-Iranian Sonboly, who later took his own life.

Britain
Foreign Secretary Johnson rebuked for blaming Munich shooting on terrorists
[Guardian] The foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, was urged to avoid passing politically sensitive judgments on world events until he was in full possession of the facts after he prematurely blamed Islamist terrorists for the killings in Munich on Friday.

Johnson made his remarks before the identity of the killer ‐ an 18-year-old German citizen of Iranian descent who was obsessed with mass slaughter ‐ had been known.

Although early reports of the attack, in which Ali Sonboly shot nine people dead before killing himself, suggested a gang of three people might be on the loose in Munich in a terror attack reminiscent of the killings in Paris, no definitive information was available and the authorities had not identified a motive for the killings.

Speaking about the attack on Friday while in New York, Johnson told the press that that the "global sickness" of terrorism needed to be tackled at its source in the Middle East.

"If, as seems very likely, this is another terrorist incident, then I think it proves once again that we have a global phenomenon and a global sickness that we have to tackle both at the source ‐ in the areas where the cancer is being incubated in the Middle East ‐ and also of course around the world."

Al Qaeda chief urges kidnappings of Westerners for prisoner swaps
[Reuters] Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri has appeared in an audio interview calling on fighters to take Western hostages and exchange them for jailed jihadists, the monitoring service SITE Intelligence Group said on Sunday.

In recording posted online, Al-Zawahiri called on the global militant network to kidnap Westerners "until they liberate the last Muslim male prisoner and last Muslim female prisoner in the prisons of the Crusaders, apostates, and enemies of Islam," according to SITE.

Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the recording. Zawahiri is believed to be seeking refuge in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border area that is the Taliban's base.

Relations with Pakistan bigger challenge than Al-Qaeda, Taliban: Afghan President
[DAWN] KABUL: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said state to state relations with Pakistan are a bigger challenge for Afghanistan than the existence of terror groups such as Al-Qaeda and Taliban.

In an interview with Geo News, the Afghan President alleged that Pakistan provides sanctuaries to terrorists and trains them, making relations with Pakistan, the bigger challenge for his country.

"We cannot understand when Pakistan says it will not allow a group of terrorists to amend its constitution, army act and prepares a National Action Plan (NAP) against them. Simultaneously, Pakistan tolerates another group which attempts to undermine the government and bring horror, death and destruction to Afghanistan," said Ghani.

The Afghan president claimed he can provide addresses of Taliban leaders in Quetta.

#1  And who has a better understanding of the Afghanistan-Pakistan embroglio, Ghani or Obama? Obama places our military in harms way in Afghanistan and then helps fund the Pak military, which is responsible for supporting the Taliban and Haqqani enemies of Afghanistan. The Pak military has been intimately involved in the movement of Afghan narcotics for more than two decades. Thus, the sooner the US declares Pakistan a state supporter of terrorism, the sooner Pakistan will be forced to back-off from its vicious policy toward Afghanistan.

city causing panic among the city residents a day after a deadly attack left at least 80 dead.

The security officials confirmed that a rocket landed in Makroryn area in the 9th police district of the city.

Sediq Sediqi, front man for the Ministry of Interior, confirmed that the rocket landed in 3rd Makrorya but did not inflict any casualties.

Earlier reports emerged from the incident site suggesting at least 5 people were maimed after a rocket landed in a kindergarten.

No group has so far grabbed credit behind the incident.

This comes as at least 80 people were killed and 231 others were maimed in a suicide kaboom in Deh Mazang area of the city on Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place after a jacket wallah detonated his explosives among the thousands of protesters who had gathered in the area.

The demonstration on Saturday was organized two months after the Enlightening Movement organized a similar rally to protest against the government over the implementation of a power project through Salang which was initially to be implemented through Bamyan and Maidan Wardak provinces.

Kobler brands Benghazi killings ‘a war crime’, demands prosecutions
[Libya Herald] UN Special Envoy Martin Kobler has said that he is "utterly shocked" at the killing of 14 men in Benghazi who bodies were found dumed in a rubbish tip in Leithi district yesterday. "This is a war crime", he tweeted today, adding that he wanted an immediate investigation.

The victims are said to include a number of people from Leithi, including the imam at the local mosque, Abdullah Al-Fakhri. A father of three, he was also the local marriage registrar.

The other bodies are said to be those of:
  • Ali Shaaban Al-Zwai (another imam from a mosque in Al-Wahaishi district)
  • Hakim Hijazi (a Benina airport technician who allegedly denounced the presence of foreign forces at the airport)
  • Tariq Tajouri (a Koranic student)
  • Bubakr Bukhatale
  • Sheikh Abdulhadi Razagk Barasi
  • Sheikh Mohammed Razag Barasi
  • Rajab Attia Al-Jazwi
  • Attia Rajab Al-Jazwi
  • Ibrahim Rajab Al-Jazwi
  • Hatem Rajab Al-Jazwi
  • Salih Al-Fahri
  • Emad Alaguri
  • Aimen Al-Zoubik

The list may not been wholly acurate. A relative of the Jazwis told the Libya Herald that while the family had been firm supporters of Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
and the father and one some had been killed, two other sons were in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
. He did not specify which two.

The killing of Al-Fakhri has particular angered and upset many Bengahzi residents. He was popular and seen as a good, hardworking imam.

60 migrants float back to Libya
[Libya Herald] More than sixty migrants colonists returned to Libya today. Their decomposing bodies were washed up on a Sabratha beach.

It was unclear from where people-traffickers had launched them to their doom nor if they had all been aboard the same craft.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, so far this year almost 2,250 migrants colonists have failed to survive the trip from Libya to Europe, or managed to be rescued by an EU warship or passing commercial vessel.

People-traffickers are charging each migrant a thousand dollars for a place on their overcrowded and unseaworthy craft.

The $60,000 investment that washed up on the Libyan beach today probably represented many months, even years of scrimping as illegal workers in the country or subventions by relatives back home.

, reacting to Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj’s statement on Kashmire, stated on Sunday that a verdict on the future of Kashmire can only be given by the people of Kashmire.

"Such a verdict on the future of Kashmire can only be given by the people of Kashmire and not by the External Affairs Minister of India."
Only Kashmiris can decide the future of Kashmire, Aziz tells Swaraj
Aziz added the right to self-determination has been given to the people of Kashmire by the United Nations

Security Council.

"It is high time that India allowed the people of Jammu and Kashmire to exercise this right through a free and fair UN supervised plebiscite," stated the foreign affair adviser.

Aziz further said the world will accept the decision taken by the Kashmiri people, and it is their choice to either integrate with Pakistain or India.

Swaraj had also disagreed with Pakistain terming Burhan Wani, a Hizbul Mujahideen separatist commander, as a martyr and stated Wani was a wanted terrorist.

"India cannot ignore the fact that over 200,000 Kashmiris participated in the funeral prayers of Burhan Muzaffar Wani in 50 different locations throughout Indian-occupied Kashmire, despite strict curfew which still continues 15 days after Wani’s extrajudicial murder on 8 July 2016," replied Aziz to Swaraj’s earlier statement.

"Let us not forget, as one Indian writer has reminded us, that not long ago the British labelled Indian freedom fighters as traitors and faceless myrmidons because at that time India was considered an integral part of the British Empire," added Aziz.

"We categorically deny the allegations and encourage advocacy groups to provide an unbiased account of the legal steps that are being taken against people who murdered nearly 250 civilians in cold blood."

Barghati says outside help needed to fight terrorism
[Libya Herald] La Belle France and other countries should be counted on to help Libya fight terrorism, Colonel Mahdi Al-Barghathi, the Government of National Accord’s defence minister said today.

Barghathi stated that those in the west of the country who had protested against La Belle France on Friday were exercising their right to demonstrate. But he added that the GNA had not authorised the presence of foreign intelligence agents. That prerogative he said, rested with the House of Representatives.

Nevertheless, he went on to insist that there was only one government in Libya and it was "stupid, ignorant and unpatriotic" to try and deny this. Libya should be united to avoid a political, social, security and economic meltdown.

Barghathi added that the forces of Evil in Benghazi were snuffies who had links with Al-Qaeda. Foreign counter-terror forces were working against them. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
any other interference in Libya, any neocolonialism, would not be tolerated.

He deplored the 14 murders in Benghazi and said they were a blemish on the city. He demanded that the authorities do everything to bring to justice the criminals responsible.

province.

Provincial governor’s front man Ataullah Khogyani said the Arclight airstrike was carried out by the foreign forces late on Friday night in Achin district.

He said the ISIS commander was identified as Jangal Pacha and was killed along with 7 other ISIS snuffies in the Arclight airstrike.

The loyalists of ISIS terrorist group have not commented regarding the report so far.

The horrific execution video was released earlier in the month of August last year which purportedly showed the ISIS loyalists forcing the men to sit on landmines and subsequently detonating the explosives.

The loyalists of the terror group claimed that the men were supporting the government and US forces and were looking to coordinate drone strikes against ISIS snuffies in Nangarhar.
It seems they didn't get them all...
The death of Jangal Pacha comes as both the Afghan and US forces have stepped up raids against the loyalists of the terror group in this province.

Europe
Kosovars vanish abroad to join the jihad
[RFE/RL] In 2014, Alejhim Maliqi told his family he had received a scholarship to study at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Then he packed up his wife and two young children and left the country. Never to be seen or heard from again.

The silence raised suspicions among relatives that he was fighting in Syria. Those fears were given substance when authorities in Kosovo issued an international arrest warrant for his arrest last May.

The government estimates that Alejhim Maliqi is among more than 300 people from Kosovo who have gone to fight in the Middle East, making this country the biggest contributor per capita in Europe. Around 50 homegrown jihadis have been killed in fighting in Syria and Iraq, while 120 more have returned to Kosovo.

His uncle says Alejhim's radicalization begam after he finished elementary school and enrolled in a madrasah in Gjilan. He was forced to go to the madrasah because the family couldn't afford to send him to high school. The madrasah was free and Alejhim was given a room in the dormitory and money for expenses and clothes.

The madrasah was run by Zeqirja Qazimi, a notorious imam who recieved a 10-year jail sentence on May 20 for trying to gather young recruits and for fighting for militants from Daesh.

Under a new law, Kosovo can jail citizens for up to 15 years if they participate in foreign wars. But few have been charged and many have been released.

Dozens of secretive charity organizations and madrasahs funded by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states operate throughout the country. They have penetrated poor, rural communities like Busavate that go neglected by the government and where unemployment can top 50 percent.

New York State Ads in North Carolina Face Complaints
[WSJ] New York’s advertising campaigns promoting the state’s economic-development opportunities have faced criticism for their high costs and meager returns in job creation. Now they have encountered another challenge.

A former North Carolina Supreme Court judge has filed complaints with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel and a New York state ethics panel alleging that taxpayer-funded ads Gov. Andrew Sonny Cuomo’s administration has run in North Carolina violated the Hatch Act by interfering with the gubernatorial and legislative races in that state.

The commercials, which reference the state’s so-called transgender bathroom law, among policies by other states, "mention North Carolina and its leadership in a transparent attempt to criticize, interfere and affect the impending North Carolina elections," according to the federal complaint filed by the retired judge, Robert F. Orr.

The Republican governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory, is up for re-election this year, as is the state’s legislature. The Hatch Act prohibits federal, state and local employees from using their official authority to interfere with or influence the outcome of an election or nomination for office.

He added that another 20 ISIS bully boyz were killed in al-Bobna neighbourhood and "Progress towards the city centre is going on in all directions."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that the SDF are progressing in the city "in several areas in Manbij city, amid more casualties among both parties."

The Observatory documented the deaths of at least 5 SDF members and 16 bully boyz in the festivities. It also "received confirmed information about the death of 8 citizens, including children and citizen women after being targeted by the ’Islamic state’ while they were trying to escape from their controlled areas in Manbij city."

The targeting of the civilians fleeing Manbij came at the same time that the SDF and Islamic State bully boyz were negotiating an evacuation of maimed civilians from the city, according to the Observatory. In exchange for allowing maimed civilians to leave the city and seek medical care, the SDF would allow maimed bully boyz to also leave.

Darwish added that SDF also repelled heavy Islamic State attacks over the night and morning in the neighbourhoods of Ousajli, Tal-Serj, and Zonqel to the south and northwest of Manbij; "37 hard boyz killed" he tweeted.

Ankara mayor suggests Gülen uses genies to ‘enslave people’
Oh my. Truly the Crazy Years have descended upon the Turks.
Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek has suggested that U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen uses genies to “enslave” people, speaking after the July 15 failed coup attempt, which the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) says the “Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ)” was behind.
"I seen 'em, wid me own eyes!"
“How can Fethullah Gülen control such a large number of people? What makes him different?” the host of a TV show on private broadcaster CNN Türk asked Gökçek, to which the Ankara mayor replied that Gülen used “genies.”

“This may sound funny to you, but he does it with a strange method. He does it with the ‘three-lettered things.’ Everyone now can debate this. He enslaves people with the ‘three-lettered things,’” Gökçek said, using a Turkish phrase to refer to the word “genie.”

“It’s obvious that a lot people have been enslaved in previous times and then were saved. He has the ability to do this too.
... he said blissfully...
People have become mesmerized and enslaved,” the Ankara mayor added.

Body search of women at Bara checkposts stopped
[DAWN] Body search of women at various checkposts in Bara was stopped after elders of Bar Qambarkhel announced their collective responsibility to curb smuggling of narcotics in their area.

Sources told Dawn that a representative jirga of Bar Qambarkhel elders met the security officials in Bara and assured them of their cooperation in controlling illegal trade and smuggling in their area.

The elders had earlier expressed reservations about extensive body search of local women by lady searchers at a number of checkposts in Bara while mobility of local residents had increased with the repatriation of over 80,000 families to the region during last one year.

Security forces had apprehended that some suspected burqa-clad women were not only involved in drugs smuggling, but also suspected of carrying suicide jackets and other ammunition used in terrorist activities.

Sources said that security officials assured the Bar Qambarkhel elders that body search of local women would be stopped provided the local tribes take collective responsibility of keeping vigil on movement of suspected people, including women.

Respect and honour
[DAWN] THE death of Qandeel Baloch has brought to the forefront the debate about the status of women in this country. Since the news of the social media star’s murder, allegedly at the hands of her brother, we have learned many uncomfortable facts about our society, its leaders, and its attitudes towards women. We have been made to realise that the progress women have been making in this country remains useless if their basic safety cannot be guaranteed by the state.

In Pakistain, women are being encouraged to study, to think of careers, to think of themselves as entrepreneurs. Taking up an unconventional career, such as a fighter pilot or the CEO of a multinational company, is presented as a valid option for our lives, beyond the traditional roles of marriage and motherhood. Our government promises to do everything it can to support us. Foreign countries pour aid into programmes that promote women’s empowerment. ’When women do well, Pakistain looks good’ is the mantra we desperately want to believe.

Yet these are all false promises. Our physical safety is still compromised: we can be beaten, abused, molested, assaulted and even murdered, and the perpetrators of those crimes will get off lightly, if they even see the insides of a courtroom or jail cell. There is still no law that clearly and unequivocally criminalises abuse, domestic violence, or sexual harassment against us. If the law is there, mechanisms to enforce it do not exist. There is still no amendment to honour killing laws labelling this kind of murder a crime against the state each time it happens.

Sanders Supporters Chant ‘Lock Her Up’ in Philadelphia Protest Against Clinton
[BLOGS.WSJ] It’s not just Republicans that want presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Bainbridge Colby ...
in prison.

At a lively Sunday march in support of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
, chants of "lock her up," "Hillary for Prison" signs and t-shirts and calls for indictment were common among the most ardent supporters of Mr. Sanders, who arrived in Philadelphia to make their voices heard to the delegates attending the Democratic National Convention.

Republicans used last week’s Republican National Convention to make the case that Mrs. Clinton’s perceived ethical lapses made her unfit for office. Delegates to the Republican convention could be heard chanting "Lock her up!" while "Hillary for Prison" shirts and bumper stickers have proliferated across the country.

More heavy losses as Bunyan Marsous resumes Sirte attacks on IS
[Libya Herald] A two-pronged attack by Bunyan Marsous forces saw the final clearance of a key Sirte residential district but at a further heavy cost in lives, with 22 fighters killed and as many as 175 injured.

The dawn assault today on the Hay Dolar district saw deaths and injuries from booby traps and sniper fire. IS casualties were also reported to be high with some 25 bodies found in the advance through Hay Dolar.

At least two attempted suicide kabooms were stopped when the vehicles and their explosives were blown up before they could reach their targets. There are unconfirmed reports that a third boom-mobileer managed to get through, causing some casualties

The other point of the attack was an area near the port though the Ouagadougou Centre, which looks increasingly as if it is set to be the terrorists’ last redoubt continued to be bombarded.

In the course of the day, Misratan jets, which had opened the dawn assault, flew 16 bombing missions.

Among the slain today was field commander Mohammed Shakloum and the admired photojournalist Abdulqadar Fassouk. Today’s push came after several quiet days during which extensive preparations were made. A week ago 20 fighters died and 110 were maimed in vicious fighting.

The corpse count since the BM operation began in May now hovers around 300 with hundreds of maimed, many of them with serious injuries.

There continues to be resentment in Misrata at the Presidency Council’s limited support for an offensive that is being conducted in its name. The call for female blood donors was renewed yesterday in advance on today’s assault. And Misrata Central Hospital and its satellites continue to appeal for drugs and consumables to deal with the steady flow of injured.

Defend Benghazi Brigades said Al-Barghathi hailing of France’s intervention is bizarre
[Libya Observer] Defend Benghazi Brigades (DBB) said the statement of the defense minister-designate of the UN-proposed government, Mihdi Al-Barghathi, is odd as he has hailed the French intervention in Libya and has ignored the protests that went out in many cities in Libya denouncing the intervention.

"We find it strange that Al-Barghathi has the guts to say he welcomes the French intervention in Libya and ignores the people’s outrage about it." The DBB elaborated.

The DBB also added in a statement Sunday that the attempt to discredit their forces and classify them as IS groups or Al-Qaeda ones or even calling them snuffies and snuffies is very cliché and a well-known lie to all Libyans.

"Are those who strife to go back home terrorists, especially after being kicked out of it by force? Or are they the ones who kidnap Benghazi’s youth and throw them in prisons and commit mass killings without trial?" The DBB wondered.

The UN-proposed government supports Haftar and this is clear in Al-Barghathi’s consideration of Benghazi’s battle as the "decisive battle" and their revolutionaries as "terrorists", the DBB statement added, refuting Al-Barghathi’s claims that their forces killed the captives saying that they released all of them and they vouched for the DBB forces’ good manners.

Four hospitals hit by air raids in Syria’s Aleppo
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET]. Four makeshift hospitals and a local blood bank in Syria’s battered Aleppo city have been hit by air raids in the past 24 hours, a group of doctors said Sunday.

The bombardment killed a two-day-old baby in the children’s hospital in a besieged eastern neighbourhood of Aleppo, said the Independent Doctor’s Association, a group of Syrian doctors that supports clinics in the city.

The infant’s oxygen supply was cut after a strike on the hospital at 1:00 am (2300 GMT), the second strike on the hospital in about nine hours, according to the IDA.

"The doctors could only yell for their colleagues to take cover and shield the babies," the group said in a statement.

The IDA said the four hospitals that were hit -- the children’s hospital, Al-Bayan, Al-Zahraa, and Al-Daqaq -- would all be going out of service "as a result of the escalating series of aerial attacks taking place against health facilities in Aleppo by Syrian and Russian warplanes."

The World Health Organization said Syria was the most dangerous place for health care workers to operate last year, with 135 attacks on health facilities and workers in 2015.

In recent months, several hospitals have been damaged and medical staff killed in the densely populated eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo city.

A hospital in the eastern Maadi neighborhood was hit just eight days ago, wounding some of the staff and patients inside.

More than 280,000 people have been killed since Syria’s conflict erupted in 2011, and millions have been forced to flee.

N. Korea building new naval base for SLBMs
SEOUL -- North Korea is in the midst of building a new naval base on the east coast to accommodate submarines capable of firing submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), a British military media agency said Sunday.

According to the report by IHS Jane's Defence Weekly, North Korea is currently building the new military facility at a location some 2.25 kilometers from Sinpo Shipyard, the homeport of North Korea's ballistic missile submarine program, in South Hamgyong Province.

The existing shipyard currently houses 2,000-ton Sinpo-class submarines, which have been used by North Korea to test-fire SLBMs. The purpose of the new naval base is presumed to be housing submarines larger than the Sinpo-class, the report added.

Sources earlier said Pyongyang is known to be developing a 3,000-ton submarine that can carry more than three SLBMs. The existing Sinpo-class submarine can hold only one SLBM at a time.

A South Korean military official said the country has been eyeing the construction, adding it is currently making efforts to find out the detailed background of the project.

Syrian government says ready for further peace talks
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syria’s government said on Sunday it was ready for further peace talks with the opposition and that it was intent on a political solution to the five-year conflict.

"Syria ... is ready to continue the Syrian-Syrian dialogue without any preconditions ... and without foreign interference, with the support of the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
," state news agency SANA quoted an official in the foreign ministry as saying.

The UN hopes to convene a new round of intra-Syrian peace talks in Geneva in August, its Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said this week.

Previous rounds of talks this year broke down as fighting escalated, particularly around Aleppo, where government forces recently cut off the only road into rebel-held areas of the divided northern city.

The United States and Russia, which back opposing sides in the conflict, are meanwhile to discuss an American proposal for closer military cooperation and intelligence sharing on Syria to combat bully boy groups.

Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
said this month that Washington and Damascus ally Moscow had reached a common understanding on the steps needed to get Syria’s grinding of the peace processor back on track.

Loopholes persist in 'honour killing' bill
[DAWN] The proposed legislation on honour killings has introduced strict punishment for the convicts making it tougher than the ordinary murder cases.

However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
legal experts are of the view that after killing a relative in the name of honour, a person may declare it a simple murder to avoid the punishment.

Under the existing law, a murderer can be released after the legal heirs pardon him. But the proposed legislation on honour killings recommends 25 years’ imprisonment even if the heirs of the victim pardon the convict. Under Section 302 of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC), the convict in a simple murder case may get the life imprisonment of 14 years or a maximum of the death penalty.

Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, a criminal law expert and the president of the Islamabad High Court Bar Association, said the legislation on honour killings would not achieve the desired results as the accused may claim that he had committed the murder for other reasons such as a dispute over property etc. Hence, he may be charged with Section 302 of the PPC and the family members may pardon him under Section 309 of the PPC.

has accused the Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz of carrying out ’scientific and technical’ rigging and alleged that this has harmed the ongoing freedom movement in India-held Kashmire.

Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, president of the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf in AJK, said at a presser on Saturday that the regional wing of the Pakistain Peoples Party and the All Jammu and Kashmire Moslem Conference had already rejected the results as rigged. They had announced that they would devise a strategy after consulting other parties, he said.

Alleging that ill-gotten money was used, Barrister Chaudhry claimed that Rs2 billion had been distributed in AJK and Rs50 million had been given to each PML-N candidate to lure the voters. He alleged that in addition to Rs50m by the PML-N, Indian intelligence agency RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) had spent Rs100m in his constituency.

The former prime minister of AJK said he was being targeted because he had organised a ’million march’ against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US, the UK and other countries.

Nawaz's open-heart surgery a lie, claims PTI spokesman
[DAWN] Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) front man, Naeemul Haq, on Sunday alleged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
lied about his recent open-heart surgery.

In an interview with DawnNews, Naeemul Haq said, "Nawaz Sharif lied about his illness and released a false statement from there [London]. There was no doctor's name and no open-heart surgery."

"We have received lots of information from doctors in London," he claimed.

When asked whether this was the PTI's official stance, Naeemul Haq said, "This is the case according to my knowledge."

The PTI front man was of the opinion that the premier "wants to hide wrongdoings that were exposed by the Panama leaks" and that "Nawaz Sharif is the only danger to democracy."

"For three months, he has fooled the people on the Panama issue," he added.

The PTI front man said the party along with other opposition parties had, after a number of discussions, agreed on two points: that the Panama leaks should be investigated and that corruption must end.

A PM House spokesperson said they were not aware of Naeemul Haq's allegations and did not offer a comment on the matter.

Nawaz Sharif underwent open-heart surgery at a London hospital on May 31. The need for the surgery arose after the premier went through a cardiac procedure called Atrial Fibrillation Ablation in 2011, during which certain complications occurred resulting in perforation of heart, Maryam Nawaz earlier told the media.

The Grand Turk
No change in top army, intel seats after failed coup attempt: Erdoğan
Turkey’s National Intelligence Agency (MİT) chief Hakan Fidan, who has faced criticism before and after the failed military coup attempt of July 15, and Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar will both remain in their positions during an upcoming “transition process,” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said.

“He did not offer his resignation. We did not discuss this,” Erdogan said in an interview with the France 24 television station after an unscheduled meeting with Fidan at the presidential palace on July 22, while admitting that there had been an intelligence failure.

“There was a weakness regarding intelligence, a failure,” he added, while also noting that such failures had also been seen in the U.S. over the September 11, 2001 attacks and the recent attacks in Belgium and France.

Erdoğan said Fidan and Akar, who was held hostage by the plotters on the night of the attempted coup, would be staying on but their positions were under review.

“If we have to make a decision [on their future], I will weigh it up with my prime minister [Binali Yıldırım]. At present we are in a transition period. We have a saying, ‘you do not change your horse halfway down the road,’” he added.

Daily Hürriyet had reported earlier that Erdoğan criticized Fidan in their meeting, to which Fidan replied: “Whatever you order, I’m ready to do.”

Erdogan had previously complained of finding out about the coup not from the intelligence services but from his brother-in-law, while also being unable to reach Fidan.

Prime Minister Yıldırım, meanwhile, said he found out about what was happening 15 minutes after the coup attempt started, having had no idea of the impending threat.

“Even looking at things in the most positive way, there was an intelligence weakness,” Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli admitted to private broadcaster NTV.

Bomb blast kills 1, injures 11 at German restaurant
RT, but I've seen other sources
At least one person has been killed and 11 others injured after an explosion struck a restaurant in the south German city of Ansbach, Bavaria. Authorities believe it was a ‘deliberate' act caused by an improvised device.

The incident took place in the central part of the city, close to an area in which a music festival took place at the weekend, Suddeutsche Zeitung reported. Police have cordoned off the area around the restaurant and are conducting a crime scene investigation.

"The explosion in downtown Ansbach was not a gas explosion, but was caused by an explosive device," Ansbach Mayor Carda Seidel confirmed. Seidel also said that it should not be ruled out that there could have been several explosions.

Police suspect that the only person killed in the explosion was the attacker himself, local media report.

The police have set up an operations center in City Hall and a crisis team has been formed. A special police task force (SEC) has also been deployed. Volunteer firefighters from Nuremberg, Katzwang and Almoshof were called in to assist authorities.
Moderator TW found this link from Deutsche Welle with the same story:
Syrian man denied asylum killed in 'intentional' blast near Ansbach music festival. A Syrian asylum seeker who had previously tried to commit suicide has been cited as the man who was killed in an 'intentional' bomb blast in the Bavarian town of Ansbach. Twelve people were injured in the explosion.
Hopefully the police are looking into where he got the bomb. There also seems to be a policy of allowing those whose asylum requests are rejected to stay on indefinitely -- perhaps it is time to change that to regular shipments home.

#1  What we know:

- 27yo Syrian, entered the country 2 years ago (before the big rush), was refused asylum but allowed to stay (Germany doesn't ship back to war-torn Syria)
- Lived on taxpayers' money in a flat
- Has attempted suicide twice before
- carried backpack with explosives
- tried to gain entry to a music festival with 2500 people attending but was refused entry by security because he had no ticket.
- hung around at the entrance for a while then went airborne.
- sharp small metal fragments found suggest the bastard wanted to do maximum damage
- was reanimated but died shortly hereafter

#6  Lately I've been wondering about these terror attacks in the west, as nasty as they've been they just don't seem big enough or blingy enough to really make an impression. Think what a statement multiple IED attack on the peloton of the Tour de France would make.

I'm left to choose between these alternatives (or some combination):
1) Our intelligence is much better than it seems and the big events a quietly squashed.
2) The jihadi network just ain't that big.
3) The leading jihadis are ignorant about what would get attention
4) They're really stupid.

9/11 was a very big very splashy event. What's happened since then that really made a mark granted that the MSM won't push any story that says bad things about the Muzzies.

Top DNC staffer apologizes for email on Sanders’ religion
[POLITICO] A top staffer at the Democratic National Committee has apologized after suggesting that the organization use Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
’ religious beliefs against him in the Democratic primary.

One email among the thousands of internal DNC messages released this week by Wikileaks showed DNC CFO Brad Marshall questioning Sanders’ Jewish faith, and suggested that painting the candidate as an atheist "could make several points difference" in several late primary contests.

"It might may (sic) no difference, but for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist," Marshall wrote in a message to several DNC communications directors.

The message does not mention Sanders by name, but he was the only Jewish candidate, and the email came shortly before the Kentucky and West Virginia Democratic primaries.

In a copy of a Facebook post provided by a source, Marshall said that he "deeply" regrets his "insensitive, emotional emails." His Facebook page, upon searching, is private, and the statement is the only content viewable to the public.

The entire Facebook post: "I deeply regret that my insensitive, emotional emails would cause embarrassment to the DNC, the Chairwoman, and all of the staffers who worked hard to make the primary a fair and open process. The comments expressed do not reflect my beliefs nor do they reflect the beliefs of the DNC and its employees. I apologize to those I offended."

Iran destroys 100,000 illegal satellite dishes
Control the population's access to, and ability to share information, and you control what they can believe to be true.
[IsraelTimes] Iran destroys 100,000 illegal satellite dishes and receivers as part of a widespread crackdown against the devices that authorities say are morally damaging, according to an Iranian news website.

The destruction ceremony takes place in Tehran in the presence of General Mohammad Reza Naghdi, head of Iran’s Basij militia, who warns of the impact that satellite television is having in the conservative country.

“The truth is that most satellite channels… deviate the society’s morality and culture,” he says at the event, according to Basij News. “What these televisions really achieve is increased divorce, addiction and insecurity in society.”

Under Iranian law, satellite equipment is banned, and those who distribute, use, or repair it can be fined up to $2,800.

#9  Control the population's access to, and ability to share information, and you control what they can believe to be true.

Case in point: The Mainstream Media's near monopoly on information delivered to the American Public before the widespread use of the internet. A lot of lies were published during that time (including that the 'Tet offensive was a major defeat of America' - Walter Cronkite) and a lot of people got killed as a result.

Back in the '60s and early '70s I was taught that Kennedy and Roosevelt were saints incarnate and Nixon was Satan incarnate, The Vietnam war was American colonialism and a whole lot of other crap. Remember the gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Watergate scandal (yet the much more serious email story of Clinton is barely mentioned. And how much coverage is the DNC's operation to list sexist job offers in Craiglist in Trump's name getting in the MSM?). And lets not forget the gavel-to-gavel coverage of 'a pubic hair on a coke bottle' comment.

They are still trying to put stuff the internet jeannie back into the regulated bottle.

Still might succeed. For the children of course!

They may not be destroying satellite dishes but they sure will try to restrict who has broadcast access on the originating earth stations.

The Grand Turk
Turkey detains senior aide to Fethullah Gulen
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has detained a senior aide to the US-based holy man Fethullah Gulen who it blames for the coup attempt aimed at ousting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
, an official said on Saturday.

Security forces detained Hails Hanci in the Black Sea province of Trabzon, the official said, describing Hanci as a "right-hand man" of Gulen and responsible for transferring funds to him.

Gulen denies being behind the failed coup.

The official said Hanci "apparently" entered the country two days before the attempted putsch that erupted late on July 15.

Separately, the official confirmed a report in the state-run Anadolu news agency that Turkey also detained the son-in-law of Akin Ozturk, a former air force chief already placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
as one of the key suspects.

Lieutenant colonel Hakan Karakus was detained in Ankara, it said.

Turkey had already Saturday detained one of Gulen’s nephews.

Iraq
Canada's Defence chief opts to keep Kurdish flag on uniforms in Iraq
Canada's top soldier has decided special forces troops in Iraq will continue to wear the Kurdish flag on their uniforms in addition to the Maple Leaf, despite questions about the practice.

National Defence says Gen. Jonathan Vance recently approved the flag patches in part to show solidarity with "a region facing existential threats," but that they should not be construed as support for an independent Iraqi Kurdistan.

That may be wishful thinking, say experts, one of whom compared it to a foreign military force wearing the Quebec flag in Canada.

The Kurds' distinctive red, white and green flag with a sun emblem has been on the Canadian soldiers' uniforms since they arrived in northern Iraq to help the Kurdish peshmerga fight ISIL in 2014.

The practice wasn't publicly known until Vance led a group of Canadian journalists on a tour of the mission in April. At the time, Canada had several dozen special forces operatives in the region, though the Trudeau government is expanding the contingent to 200.

The military initially defended the flag patches, which are on one shoulder with the Canadian flag on the other. Officials said they were used for cohesion with Kurdish and allied forces, and to ensure Canadian forces could be easily identified by friends on the battlefield.

Nonetheless, a review was ordered after experts warned that sporting the Kurdish flag, rather than the Iraqi flag, could be interpreted by both Iraqis and Kurds as support for an independent Kurdistan.

National Defence spokesman Daniel Le Bouthillier said Friday the review was recently completed and Vance had decided to keep the Kurdish flag patches.

The flag "acts as an identification patch with our partner force, demonstrates solidarity with a region facing existential threats for which we are there to help, and is in keeping with previous methods used by Canada and allies when working with partner forces," Le Bouthillier said in an email.

"The flag is in no way a symbol of Canadian support for political disunity in Iraq," he added.

But two experts say whether the military likes it or not, wearing the Kurdish flag is highly symbolic inside Iraq, with its ethnic and religious divides.

"It's the optics of it on the larger political dimensions," said Denise Natali, an expert on Kurdish politics at the Institute for National Strategic Studies in Washington. "Every time these types of things are done that support sub-state groups, it is actually undermining the idea that they need cohesion and unity."

Bessma Momani, a Middle East expert at the University of Waterloo, put it another way. "Would we be comfortable with other forces putting on a Quebec flag?" she asked. "This sends mixed signals to our political partners."

Concerns about Canada unintentionally contributing to Kurdish independence haven't solely related to the flag patches. Officials warned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last year that the Kurds could use the military training and equipment Canada is providing to fight ISIL to one day push for an independent state.

14 bodies found in Benghazi rubbish dump; victims shot in head
[Libya Herald] Fourteen bodies were discovered in Benghazi today, Thursday, left in a rubbish dump near the social security headquarters in the city’s once notorious Leithi district.

They are said to have been found with hands and leg tied. All had been shot in the head. There are also reports of signs of torture.

The bodies showed few signs of composition and all 14 are thought to have been killed in the previous 48 hours.

The bodies were taken to Benghazi Medical Centre.

The discovery has, at the very least, embarrassed the Libyan National Army (LNA) which, along with other security officials, has made no official statement although military sources are quoted as saying that identities are unknown. For 14 bodies to be dumped in an area the LNA now firmly controls has resulted in questions about its competence. There are also accusations that it was complicit in the killings.

There have been ongoing allegations about opponents of Khalifa Hafter and Operation Dignity disappearing in recent weeks.

Libya's unnoticed terror region
[Libya Observer] As fighting goes on in Sirte to eradicate ISIS terrorists, another kind of terror went unnoticed in western Libya.

In Wirshiffana region, heinous crimes are being committed every day. Authorities here as well as the international community are concerned about ISIS, but gangsters and terror groups in Wirshiffana are left free to commit killings and kidnapping.

Locals in western Libya say ISIS and Wirshiffana kidnap gangs are two sides of the same coin. The only difference is that ISIS is using false interpretations of Islam to justify their crimes, but Wirshiffana gangs do not pay attention to that. They are a bunch of criminals and drug addicts who kidnap for ransom. If a ransom is not paid, the victim will be executed immediately. They kill elderlies, men, women, girls, boys, and children with no mercy.

Wirshiffana region lies on the Mediterranean just close to Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
's western outskirt of Janzour. It's under the control of so-called Tribes' Army, an affiliate to Khalifa Hafter's Dignity Operation in the east. Many of Wirshiffana gangs are still loyal to slain Qadaffy's regime despite their joining to Dignity Operation.

In one of the latest heinous killing, a 65-year old man was tortured and then murdered by Wirshiffana gangsters. Saied Shariha, from Kabou town in Nafousa Mountain, was hanged to death after his poor family could not pay the LYD 800.000 ransom.

"ISIS is better than Wirshiffana gangs," a Kabou local said.

Abduction for ransom has become a flourishing business there. Truck and taxi drivers are refusing to go there and residents of the mountain cities in the west, who used to pass through Wirshiffana, have redirected their route to a safer way.

"I would not go there even if I was offered a thousand diners for a trip," a taxi drives says.

The coastal road that links Tripoli to Zawiya has been closed for more than year now. Residents of Zawia, Sabratha, Zuwara and other costal towns are using boats and helicopters to visit their relatives or do business in Tripoli.

Passing through Wirshiffana is great risk. Last March, a local from Zawia had to drive to Tripoli to save his sick daughter, but he was brutally murdered.

In May, a nine-year old boy was kidnapped and murdered after a ransom was not paid.

In March, the faceless myrmidons beheaded hostage Talal Sheikhi and hanged his decapitated head in a shop.

In February, the faceless myrmidons hanged a 12-year old boy after his family failed to be the requested ransom.

In December 2015, two civilians from the Gharyan were killed by shots in the heads.

Wirshiffana has become a hub for gangsters and highwaymen since the return of so-called Tribes Army to the region as per a unilateral ceasefire between the Tribes Army and Misrata's Al-Halboos brigade.

The ceasefire was rejected by the GNC and the Fatwa House, which both insisted on cracking down on the region's criminals first. Both were accused by Dignity Operation media outlets of obstructing peace and inciting bloodshed in the country. Those who supported the ceasefire said they wanted peace, but only panic and bloodshed have prevailed since then.

Human rights organizations and the UN Support Mission in Libya have turned a deaf ear to the daily killing in Wirshiffana and focused on other issues that only serve their interests in Libya.

A Satirist wrote: "If Wirshiffana kidnap gangs deposit their money in the banks, Libya's cash shortage crisis would end immediately."

--Secretary Clinton meets Prime Minister ElKeib. A senior U.S. official says in Libya "the sense of a people breathing freedom for the first time is palpable."
--Washington — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton praised the work of Libya’s interim government and its positive encouragement of better governance, the private sector and Libyan civil society in the four months it has been in power.
--Speaking with Libyan Prime Minister Abdurrahim ElKeib at the State Department March 8, Clinton said Muammar Qadhafi’s 42-year reign in which he ruled through “intimidation and division” had hollowed out Libya’s institutions, but ElKeib and his government have shown “essential and effective leadership” and had begun the difficult task of putting Libya back together.
--”We’ve seen progress in each of the three key areas of democratic society: building an accountable, effective government; promoting a strong private sector; and developing a vibrant civil society. And we will stand with the people of Libya as it continues this important work,” Clinton said. ... In addition, the secretary said, the United States and the United Nations “have removed almost all restrictions on doing business, and we are encouraging American companies to look for opportunities inside Libya.”

Wasserman Schultz resigning as party leader
She's got the Jar-Jar Binks look down pat...
[CNN] Debbie Wasserman-Schultz
...Congresswoman from Florida, the abrasive chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. She has been a politician since 1992, and prior to that was in training as a political science major. Her primary accomplishment seems to be that she's Jewish...
announced Sunday she is stepping down as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee at the end of the party's convention, which is set to begin here Monday.
Hillary announced that Debbie Downer now will be the "honorary chair" of the Hilarity 50-state program. So after using the DNC to ensure Hillary's nomination, Debbie now goes to work for ... Hillary. Priceless...
The Florida congresswoman's resignation -- under pressure from top Democrats -- comes amid the release of leaked emails showing DNC staffers favoring Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Tallyrand ...
over Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
in the party's 2016 primary contest.

Her announcement that she was leaving had pro-Sanders supporters cheering during a demonstration in Philadelphia and Donald Trump crowing, too.

In her statement, Wasserman Schultz said that she remains committed to seeing Clinton elected president. She talked with both President Barack Obama
I am the change that you seek...
and Clinton before making her announcement, a Democratic source said.

"Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention," Wasserman Schultz said in the statement.

"As Party Chair, this week I will open and close the Convention and I will address our delegates about the stakes involved in this election not only for Democrats, but for all Americans," she continued.

She may briefly address the delegates on Monday for a few minutes, a scenario to which the Clinton and Sanders campaigns have tentatively agreed, sources said.

Wasserman Schultz had faced intense pressure over the weekend to quit her post, several Democratic leaders told CNN, urging her to quell a growing controversy threatening to disrupt Clinton's nominating convention.

DNC Vice Chair Donna Brazile will serve as interim chair through the election, it was announced Sunday. She is a CNN political commentator.
And also a Clintonista...
Separately, a Democratic operative said Hispanic leaders close to Clinton and her high command were discussing Housing Secretary Julian Castro as a possible successor to Wasserman Schultz at the DNC helm.

Chants of "Debbie is done!" and "Debbie resigned!" broke out at a pro-Sanders rally in Philadelphia after the news was announced.

Party officials decided Saturday that Wasserman Schultz would not have a major speaking role or preside over daily convention proceedings this week. The DNC Rules Committee has named Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, as permanent chair of the convention, according to a DNC source. She will gavel each session to order and will gavel each session closed.

"She's been quarantined," another top Democrat said of Wasserman Schultz, following a meeting Saturday night but before her announcement that she was leaving.

Earlier Sunday, David Axelrod
...a Chicago-based political hack, political adviser to Barack B.O. Obama since 2004. Following the 2008 election, he was appointed as Senior Advisor to Obama and we all see how well that worked out....
, a former top adviser to Obama's presidential campaigns and a CNN senior political commentator, said Wasserman Schultz should resign.

"I would ask her to step aside. I would ask her to step aside because she's a distraction in a week that is Hillary Clinton's week," Axelrod told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."

After she announced she was out, Axelrod tweeted, "I find this quibbling over whether @DWStweets leaves now or Friday silly. What difference does it make? She's out. She's leaving. Move on!"

"John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman — and a former top adviser to Barack Obama — broached the idea of replacing Wasserman Schultz as early as last fall, only to be rebuffed by the president’s team, according to two people with direct knowledge of the conversation.
“It came down to the fact that the president didn’t want the hassle of getting rid of Debbie,” said a former top Obama adviser. “It’s been a huge problem for the Clintons, but the president just didn’t want the headache of Debbie bad-mouthing him. ... It was a huge pain in the ass.”

2 die in bomb attack in al-Obeidi

(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad – A well placed source in the Ministry of Interior reported of six casualties after the explosion of an improvised explosive device at al-Obeidi area in eastern Baghdad.

According to information shared by the source, it was stated, “This evening, an improvised explosive device exploded near shops at al-Obeidi in eastern Baghdad, killing two persons and wounding four others.”

The source added, “Security forces rushed to the area and transferred the wounded to a nearby hospital and the dead body to the forensic department.”

Deadly suicide attack strikes northern Baghdad

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A jacket wallah struck near a checkpoint in a Shiite area of northern Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 12 people, Iraqi security and medical officials said.

The blast also maimed at least 22 people, the officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but ISIS carries out frequent suicide kabooms targeting both Iraqi security forces and members of the country’s Shiite majority, whom it considers heretics.

A suicide bomber targeted shoppers in Baghdad’s central Karrada district earlier this month, killing 292 people, while an attack on a Shiite shrine in Balad, north of the capital, left 40 dead a few days later.

ISIS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces have since regained significant ground and are conducting operations to set the stage for the battle to recapture djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the last ISIS-held city in the country.

But the bully boyz have responded to the battlefield setbacks by hitting back against civilians, and experts have warned there may be more bombings as the bully boyz continue to lose ground.

China-Japan-Koreas
Cambodia blocks ASEAN statement on South China Sea
Southeast Asian nations failed to agree on maritime disputes in the South China Sea on Sunday after Cambodia blocked any mention to an international court ruling against Beijing in their statement, diplomats said.

Foreign ministers from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) met for the first time since the U.N.-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration handed an emphatic legal victory to the Philippines in the dispute this month. The ruling by the court in The Hague denied China's sweeping claims in the strategic seaway, through which more than $5 trillion in global trade passes each year.

China claims most of the sea, but ASEAN members the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei all have rival claims. Beijing says the ruling has no bearing on its rights in the sea, and described the case as a farce.

The Philippines and Vietnam both wanted the communique issued by ASEAN foreign ministers after their meeting to refer to the ruling and the need to respect international law, ASEAN diplomats said. Their foreign ministers both discussed the ruling with ASEAN counterparts in the Laotian capital.

But before the meeting, China's closest ASEAN ally Cambodia opposed the proposed wording, throwing the group into disarray. Phnom Penh supports Beijing's opposition to any ASEAN stand on the South China Sea, and its preference for dealing with the disputed claims on a bilateral basis.

"We are still working on it," Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told Reuters after the meeting on Sunday, adding that she hoped the ASEAN members would reach an agreement.

Cambodia's Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon declined to comment on his country's position on Sunday.

Even after a late-night meeting of foreign ministers called to thrash out the issue late on Saturday, the region's top diplomats were unable to find a compromise. The group has given itself until Tuesday to come to issue a statement, said one ASEAN diplomat.

ASEAN is facing the prospect of being unable to issue a statement after a meeting for only the second time in its 49-year history. The first time, in 2012, was also due to Cambodia's resistance to language about the South China Sea.

Over the next two days, Southeast Asian nations will meet with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry and Wang are also expected to meet and discuss the maritime issues.

Wang, who started bilateral meetings with ASEAN members on Sunday, said he thought the media focus on the South China Sea issue was "very strange". It was "not a China-ASEAN issue," he said, adding that disputes should be resolved among the parties involved.

Japan's Foreign Minister Fumiko Kishida will also be in Laos for the ASEAN regional forum meeting. It is unclear if he will meet Wang, but China reacted angrily to Kishida saying he would discuss the sea issue if they do meet.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang, in a statement posted on the ministry's website, said the sea is not Japan's concern.

"We urge Japan not to hype up and meddle in the South China Sea issue," he said. "Japan is not a concerned party in the South China Sea, and because of its disgraceful history is in no place to make irresponsible comments about China."

The United States, allied with the Philippines and cultivating closer relations with Vietnam, has called on China to respect the court's ruling. It has criticised China's building of artificial islands and facilities in the sea and has sailed warships close to the disputed territory to assert freedom of navigation rights.

But Kerry will urge ASEAN nations to explore diplomatic ways to ease tension over Asia's biggest potential military flashpoint, a senior U.S. official said ahead of his trip.
Diplomacy will fail, of course, because none of the ASEAN members have a way to threaten China in any meaningful way.

The Grand Turk
Turkey investigating people who say coup attempt was hoax
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Turkish prosecutors are investigating people who have alleged on social media that a July 15 coup attempt was a hoax carried out by the government, the country’s justice minister said Sunday, reflecting what some critics say are increasing restrictions on expression in the wake of the failed rebellion by some military forces.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
also said it plans to hire more than 20,000 teachers to replace those who have been fired in a purge of suspected coup plotters in schools and other institutions. Education Minister Ismet Yilmaz said the new teachers will replace state educators who have been dismissed as well as teachers in private schools with alleged links to Fethullah Gulen, a US-based holy man who has denied Turkish accusations that he directed the coup attempt that killed about 290 people.

In other crackdown measures, Turkey has disbanded the presidential guard after already detaining nearly 300 unit members suspected of plotting against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
, and authorities detained Muhammet Sait Gulen, a nephew of the holy man who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said in an interview with Turkey’s Kanal 7 television station Sunday that anyone who suggests the coup attempt was staged likely had a role in the insurrection, which was defeated by loyalist forces and pro-government protesters. There has been some internet speculation that Erdogan engineered the unrest in order to rally support and thereby increase his power, a conspiracy theory rejected by the government and most commentators on Turkey's recent turbulence.

"Just look at the people who are saying on social media that this was theater, public prosecutors are already investigating them. Most of them are losers who think it is an honor to die for Fethullah Gulen’s command," Bozdag said.

Turkey has declared a three-month state of emergency to restore security following the coup attempt, granting Erdogan the power to impose decrees without parliamentary approval. More than 13,000 people, including nearly 9,000 soldiers, 2,100 judges and prosecutors and 1,485 police, have been detained, according to the president.

In addition, Erdogan said, the government has closed and seized the assets of 15 universities, 934 other schools, 109 student dormitories, 19 unions, 35 medical institutions as well as numerous other associations and foundations suspected of links to Gulen’s movement.

Turkey wants the United States to extradite Gulen. US President Barack Obama
I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go...
has said there is a legal process for extradition and has encouraged Turkey to present evidence.

IS Claims Killing, Wounding 50 In Kadhimiya Suicide Bombing (Baghdad)

Peshmerga will not withdraw from liberated areas, says ministry
[RUDAW.NET] Peshmerga forces will not withdraw from areas they have recaptured from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, the Peshmerga Ministry of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced on Saturday.

The Iraqi Defense Ministry announced earlier that the KRG and the United States, in the memorandum signed between them earlier this month, agreed that Kurdish forces would withdraw from recaptured areas in order to bring stability to those regions.

Responding to that claim, the Peshmerga ministry said, "The withdrawal is just for djinn-infested Mosul."
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
The Kurdish Peshmerga, says the announcement, have been fighting to protect the land and people of different ethnicities and religions without being financially supported by any faction.

"The war against terrorism has always been our unwavering guiding principle and it is part of the Kurdistan Region’s independence policy," the statement revealed.

The statement added that Peshmerga participation in the Mosul offensive is not something new and it is not dependent on any memorandum or financial support.

"It has been more than a year since the Peshmerga are ready for that war, but the Iraqi forces were not prepared," said the statement adding that Kurdistan Region’s President, Masoud Barzani, has several times said that the Kurdish Peshmerga are ready for the Mosul operation.

The Kurdistan Region allowed Iraqi forces to locate in Makhmour, south of Erbil, as part of preparations for the Mosul assault, the ministry claimed, and threatened to stop all its ties and cooperation with Iraqi forces if there is any disrespect for Peshmerga sacrifices.

"We announce to every faction that the Peshmerga’s weapons are not for rent," the statement said bluntly. "The Peshmerga’s weapons will fire only upon the decision of the people and for the peoples’ benefit."

"If some people in Baghdad think that Peshmerga weapons are for rent and we are dependent on their permission, they are wrong," the ministry said.

The Peshmerga ministry added that the US pledged to assist the Kurdish forces in several different sectors including: financial, military, aerial support, and providing food, fuel, and medicine.

"We thank the US for their participation in the war against ISIS (ISIS) and their support for the Peshmerga," the statement says.

Ted Cruz’s Biggest Donors Cut Ties
[BREITBART] In an extraordinary public rebuke, two influential donors who were among the biggest supporters of Senator Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign excoriated Mr. Cruz on Saturday for his decision not to endorse Donald J. Trump at the Republican National Convention.

The remarks from Robert Mercer of Long Island and his daughter Rebekah Mercer suggest widening fallout over Mr. Cruz’s convention speech, in which he did not endorse his former rival and, instead, suggested that Republicans should "vote your conscience" for candidates "up and down the ticket."

"Last summer and again this year, Senator Ted Cruz pledged to support the candidacy of the nominee of the Republican Party, whomever that nominee might be," the Mercers, who rarely comment in the news media, said in the statement to The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
. "We are profoundly disappointed that on Wednesday night he chose to disregard this pledge."

The statement continued: "The Democratic Party will soon choose as their nominee a candidate who would repeal both the First and Second Amendments of the Bill of Rights, a nominee who would remake the Supreme Court in her own image. We need ’all hands on deck’ to ensure that Mr. Trump prevails."

"Unfortunately," the statement added, "Senator Cruz has chosen to remain in his bunk below, a decision both regrettable and revealing."

The Mercers invested at least $11 million in Keep the Promise I, one of a group of interlocked "super PACs" that supported Mr. Cruz in his presidential run. During the contentious primary race, Mr. Cruz had early praise for Mr. Trump on the belief that his candidacy would eventually fade and that Mr. Trump’s voters would move over to the senator’s camp.

#11  I was disappointed in Ted for his reactions to Trump.

I supported Ted after Scott Walker pulled out and I was hoping that Ted's anti-establishment views would prevail and after Trump started winning that he could team up with the Donald and move him to a more conservative anti-establishment narrative but instead they fought like 8th grade girls.

Oh well even if Donald has shades of Mussolini that's still far superior to HRC's Mao crossed with Saddam.\ character.

#12  Hillary is out there and Trump has you people fighting each other instead of her.

What the hell is wrong with you? And with him for starting this crap? An agent provocateur couldn't do any better a job of destroying conservatives than Trump has done.

If this is the response of the GOP and most opposition, we may as well invest in ammo, booze and bunkers out in the wilderness and hope civilization falls before the fascists and communists come for us.

Or better yet become a libertarian and just get stay so high and stoned that I will not care anymore.

Keith Ellison Embarrassed After Falsely Calling Racist Democrat George Wallace a Republican
[FREEBEACON] Rep. Tom Cole (R., Okla.) embarrassed Rep. Keith Ellison (D., Minn.) on ABC Sunday morning when the latter falsely claimed that former Democratic Alabama governor George Wallace was a Republican.

Wallace is perhaps best remembered as being one of the most strident supporters of segregation in the 20th century. He sought the Democratic nomination for president multiple times, with racist stances as a key of his platform. In 1968, he ran as the American Independent Party candidate and received 46 electoral votes, making him the most recent third-party candidate to capture votes in the Electoral College.

Ellison was attacking Donald Trump when he made his false charge.

“At the same time, we do have the worst Republican nominee since George Wallace,” Ellison said.

Host George Stephanopoulos didn’t correct Ellison and went on to ask Cole a question about whether the Republican National Convention was a success, but Cole first called out Ellison.

“Well, first I want to correct my friend,” Cole said. “George Wallace was a proud Democrat and ran for the Democratic nomination.

“It was on that stage down there,” he said, pointing down at the Philadelphia arena where This Week was broadcasting from.

“Thank God he got rejected and lost,” Ellison interjected.

“Well, that’s fine, but let’s be clear on the record as to whose party he belonged to,” Cole said, as he schooled Ellison.

Ellison fell silent and looked down at the desk.

Leaked Emails Show DNC Officials Planned Anti-Trump Protests
[DAILYCALLER] The release of Democratic National Committee emails by WikiLeaks Friday reveals that DNC officials planned anti-Donald Trump protests.

In multiple emails, DNC officials signed off and acknowledged the existence of two anti-Donald Trump protests in South Bend, IN and Billings, MT. The release of nearly 20,000 emails is the first in a WikiLeaks "Hillary Leaks" series.

On April 29, a DNC press staffer, Rachel Palermo, alerted Eric Walker, deputy communications director, about a Facebook page for an anti-Trump protest on May 2 in South Bend. "Whoo! Thanks to our interns for finding this out." Walker replies, "I like it, as long as the students feel safe getting involved. I imagine this demo will be nicer than the one in San Fran today."

That day in the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
protesters blocked off roads to an event Donald Trump was hosting. The Republican nominee ended up having to jump down from the highway and sneak around back to enter.

Shiite militia warns against Peshmerga participation in Mosul offensive
[RUDAW.NET] The Shiite militia group Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq has warned of the consequences if the Peshmerga participate in the liberation of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and said that the participation of Shiite militias will speed the victory.

"We warn against the approval of Peshmerga participation in the Mosul liberation," said Jawad Al-Tibawi, military spokesperson of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, according to Summaria News.

"And participation of the Hashd [Shiite militias] will help the operation by making the victory faster," he added.

In another statement in June the group said it is their duty to participate in the liberation of Mosul. "It’s our religious, moral and patriotic duty to liberate Mosul, end the difficulties of the people, and help the people return to their homes in Tal Afar and other areas of Nineveh after the takeover of ISIS."

The Asa’ib group was founded in 2006. It is an Iraqi Shiite group with a military arm. It is known for being backed and funded by Iran.

Despite Sunnis rejecting the participation of Shiite militia groups in the operation to liberate the Sunni-majority city of Mosul, the militias still insist they will participate. Leading Shiite holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
confirmed that in a recent announcement.

"This is a military order to Saraya al-Salam [the military wing of Sadr’s Mahdi army] to coordinate with [Iraqi] special and security forces to accept your service immediately and without delay," Sadr’s written statement said on Friday.

Forces of the Saraya al-Salam will be deployed to Sharqat in northern Salahadin province, north of Baghdad, to participate in the Mosul offensive, according to Sadr’s announcement.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Peshmerga forces have already liberated many areas in Nineveh and they will take part in the main battle to liberate the center of Mosul.

"It has been more than a year since the Peshmerga are ready for that war, but the Iraqi forces were not prepared," said the KRG Ministry of Peshmerga in a statement on Saturday.

The Peshmerga will stay in liberated areas as part of their mission to protect the land and people in those areas, despite their different ethnical and religious backgrounds.

The Iraqi Defense Ministry announced earlier that the KRG and the United States, in the memorandum signed between them earlier this month, agreed that Kurdish forces would withdraw from recaptured areas in order to bring stability to those regions.

Responding to that claim, the Peshmerga ministry said, "The withdrawal is just for Mosul."

"The war against terrorism has always been our unwavering guiding principle and it is part of the Kurdistan Region’s independence policy," the statement revealed.
