On paper, the Air Force plans to start mothballing the A-10 in 2018, with the last Warthogs sent to the boneyard by 2021. But last month Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James said that the retirement of the A-10 would likely have to be delayed further as the military continues to rely on the low-and-slow attack plane for close-air support (CAS) missions flown against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. Even more telling, the Air Force Material Command (AFMC) is bringing the depot line for A-10 maintenance and repair back up to full capacity, according to Aviation Week.

Can someone comment on the OV-10 Bronco experiment apparently going on in Iraq currently? Not a replacement for the A-10, but another, relatively cheap ( Always wondered about the A-1 Skyraider as a great plane for CAS missions in a insurgency conflict) way to use airpower without breaking freakingly overpriced Air Supremacy Fighters.
[Daily Caller] Paula Jones, who settled a sexual harassment lawsuit against former President Bill Clinton for $850,000, said former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich "slammed" Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly during a contentious interview Tuesday.
The interview, which devolved into a shouting match over Kelly referring to Trump as a "sexual predator," struck a nerve with Jones, who sided with Gingrich.
"Woohoo, he slammed this nasty heifer!" Jones said of Gingrich in a tweet she has since deleted but is screen captured below.

I quit watching Megyn Kelly some time back. She struck me as a person who would try to get ahead at any cost. Kelly is an amateur compared to Hillary and it is not a likeable trait.

A day earlier, a suicide bomber had rushed out of the thick green vegetation and killed five of his comrades after Kurdish forces had fought for 10 days to gain the upper hand in Fadiliya, where 1,000 people remain trapped, surrounded by roadside bombs.
On Monday, Kurdish forces fired mortars at the outskirts of the village and there were several exchanges of gunfire. Plumes of smoke rose over the area.
Kurdish fighters told Reuters they had received orders to move in again and take Fadiliya once and for all.
Iraqi and Kurdish forces have cleared more than 30 villages like Fadiliya during their offensive to drive Islamic State from its main Iraqi stronghold of Mosul, in what is expected to be the biggest battle in Iraq for more than a decade.

[Free Beacon] State Department spokesman John Kirby had trouble Wednesday defending the lobbying of John Podesta's sister-in-law, Heather Podesta, and the arms deals that she benefitted from while John Podesta worked as a State Department counselor during Hillary Clinton’s tenure there.
Heather Podesta is a well known Democratic lobbyist and bundler for Clinton's presidential campaigns, as are the other two lobbyists with whom she worked on the arms deals. Three contracts for Qatar that Podesta and her associates worked on were valued at $19 billion, Fox News correspondent James Rosen noted during the State Department daily press briefing.
Rosen asked Kirby about the lobbying and if it was a conflict of interest of any kind. Kirby replied that there is a "standard procedure" for such contracts before the United States government approves foreign military sales per law. Kirby said the process involves multiple bureaus in both the State and Defense Departments.
"Statutorily, one official here at the Department of State is entrusted with final approval over these transfers. Am I correct about that?" Rosen asked.

Phony identities are a commonplace in cultural history. In musical history, the most remarkable example remains so-called Gregorian chant, as "rediscovered" through "source-critical" research by the Benedictine monks of Solesmes in the early 19th century. Reeling from the French Revolution which had nearly annihilated their order, the Benedictines sought an authentic medieval Catholic culture, the musical expression of a mythical Age of Faith, and thought they founded it by reconstructing an Ur-chant from the welter of different styles that infested ecclesiastical practice. It was all a scam, a hoax, a goof, as later scholars were to demonstrate, for example Katherine Bergeron in her 1998 study Decadent Enchantments, which I discussed here. Gregorian chant in the Solesmes theme-park version has such a strong association with Catholic worship, though, that many Catholics refuse to believe that they were scammed.
And so it is with Bob Dylan, parodist, satirist, scammer and snake-oil salesman par excellence. [Army Times] The Army just bought a new sniper rifle.
The Army wanted to acquire a shorter, lighter, more accurate, more ergonomic and more reliable gun for marksmen, according to Program Executive Office Soldier's product portfolio. The new Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System should be easier to carry and use in close quarters than the M110 without sacrificing performance or accuracy, PEO said.
The FedBizOpps.gov award notice said H&K will produce a maximum of 3,643 rifles over 24 months, as well as spare parts and depot support, at a max contract value of $44.5 million. There's a minimum purchase of 30 rifles for quality assurance testing.
The Army did not immediately respond to requests for comment, nor did Heckler & Koch. It is unclear from the FedBizOpps posting which model rifle won the contract, and whether it's a commercially available gun, modification of one, or a new weapon.
The gunmaker's website lists two precision rifles, one of which fits the Army's desire for a rifle smaller than the M110: the G28. The gas-operated rifle fires the same 7.62mm ammunition (NATO standard) as the M110. Heckler & Koch lists a minimum length of 96.5 cm (about 38 inches) and weight of 5.8 kg (12.7 lbs). That makes it nearly 6 cm (2.5 inches) shorter and 1.3 kg (3 lbs) lighter than the M110 (unloaded and without a suppressor).

[IsraelTimes] Soviet records show a number of agents in high Israeli places, including politicians, military engineers and a senior general.
KGB files reportedly revealed the existence of an extensive Soviet spy ring in Israel, encompassing Knesset members, senior IDF officers, engineers, members of the Israeli intelligence community, and others who worked on classified projects.
Top-secret KGB documents reported on by the Hebrew-language daily Yedioth Ahronoth Wednesday detailed the extent of the network of agents run by the Soviet secret service.
The documents were copied over a period of 20 years by Vasili Mitrokhin, a senior KGB archivist who defected to the UK in 1992. His edited notes on various KGB operations were released in 2014 and are stored in Churchill College in Cambridge; his handwritten notes remain classified by MI5.
The archivist’s notes on the KGB comprised some of the most complete information available on Soviet intelligence operations. A team from Yedioth was given access to the documents relating to the KGB’s work in Israel and discovered the extent of the agency’s network in the Jewish state.
One of the Soviets’ prime goals was to penetrate the Israeli political system. In the 1950s the KGB targeted the left-wing Mapam party and according to the records recruited at least three MKs. One of those is referred to by the KGB code name "Grant," and the archive claims that he lived "in Kibutz Shoval, near Beersheba."
Mitrokhin wrote that the agent was MK Elazar Granot, who went on to serve as the head of the party and was a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in the 1980s. Granot was said to have been recruited before 1967’s Six Day War by KGB agent Yuri Kotov, but the connection between them ended when the Russians closed their embassy in 1967.
Granot’s son Dan told Yedioth that he remembered Kotov’s nighttime visits from his childhood. The Soviet agent would arrive in a diplomatic car "bringing excellent vodka with him and great Hungarian sausages."
Still, Dan Granot said that his father "had no access to classified information, so that even if he would have wanted to, he didn’t have the option of being a spy."
Another agent revealed by Mitrokhin documents was code-named "Boker" and was a senior engineer in a top-secret national project. A third was "Jimmy," who had access to classified information about the Israeli aerospace industry, and was involved in building the ill-fated Lavi aircraft. Another soviet spy was part of the team behind Israel’s Merkava tank.
But the Russians’ greatest recruitment was an IDF general. In 1993, when the archive came to London, MI6 passed the name of the general and relevant information to Israel’s Shin Bet security service. A veteran of the intelligence service told Yedioth that the Shin Bet did not reveal the name "but I understood from them that it was a huge shock to receive this information from the British. Given the state of health of the general and, in my opinion, also because of the embarrassment it would cause to the IDF and the State of Israel, it was decided not to act against him or bring him to trial."
"To the best of my knowledge he passed away shortly afterward," he added.
Yet despite all those Israeli spies, the Soviets' pet Arab countries still could not defeat Israel in either wars or peace... and these revelations ought to further reduce the stature of the Israeli Left.
Yedioth said it would release more details in its Friday issue.
These documents led to an earthquake in intelligence agencies all over the world: Spies were exposed and captured in the UK, La Belle La Belle France, Germany, the US and elsewhere, while Russian intelligence suffered the greatest blow in its history. Some 1,000 Russian agents are estimated to have been exposed by these documents thus far. In the days before Edward Snowden and WikiLeaks, Mitrokhin's leak was considered one of the biggest of its kind in the history of intelligence agencies the world over.

Hambali, who was captured in 2003 and sent to Guantanamo three years later, was believed to be al-Qaeda's top representative in Southeast Asia and operational chief of regional krazed killer group Jemaah Ismaliyah (JI).
He was accused of helping criminal mastermind the 2002 bombings on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali that left 202 people dead, and plotting other attacks in Indonesia, as well as on U.S. airliners.
Hambali appeared before the Periodic Review Board at Guantanamo in August seeking his release after 10 years in detention without charge.
However the board said in a statement rejecting his request that Hambali had a "lengthy history as a jihadist" and had played a "significant role in major terrorist attacks and plotting".
After US President Barack Obama teachable moment... unveiled a roadmap to close Guantanamo in February, the Indonesian government expressed opposition to the potential return of Hambali to the country.
The number of prisoners at Guantanamo, set up on Cuba after the attacks on the US on September 11, 2001, is down to 60 as Obama seeks to fulfil a pledge to shutter the facility before leaving office.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Moslem-majority country, had succeeded in weakening dangerous networks, including JI, with a tough crackdown following the Bali bombings. However IS has inspired a string of attacks and plots in the past year in Indonesia and other parts of the region, including a deadly gun and suicide kaboom assault in Jakarta in January claimed by the jihadists.
[IsraelTimes] Two Paleostinian children carrying knives were detained outside a West Bank settlement, south of Jerusalem, on Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces said.
"A short while ago forces identified and apprehended two Paleostinian children under the age of ten near the community of Migdal Oz," the army said. "During the initial questioning the children admitted to have been sent, armed with knives, in order to carry out a terror attack."
The two were spotted near the security fence.
IDF spokesperson Peter Lerner said the pair were just eight years old.

[IsraelTimes] Spain’s Interior Ministry says police have arrested a Moroccan man suspected of spreading propaganda for the Islamic State armed group. A ministry statement said the man, identified only by the initials A.B., was arrested Wednesday in the northern town of Calahorra. It said he helped promote the Islamic group by praising its attacks and those who traveled to fight for it. It said he was linked to another Moroccan, Salim Aghmir, who was arrested in Pamplona city last December.
Police arrested two Moroccan-born imams in the Mediterranean island of Ibiza on Tuesday on similar suspicions.
The ministry says Spanish police have arrested 157 suspected pro-jihad activists since Spain raised its national security alert to one step below maximum following attacks in France and elsewhere last year.
[IsraelTimes] French authorities declared the Calais migrant camp known as “the Jungle,” empty on Wednesday, after fires set by departing migrants accelerated plans to evacuate people from the burgeoning slum.
Local officials announced the destruction of the camp, where thousands fleeing war and poverty have lived in squalor as they waited for a chance to sneak across the English Channel into Britain. Migrants are being moved to reception centers around France where they can seek asylum.
“There are no more migrants in the camp,” said Fabienne Buccio, a local official in the camp. “Our mission has been fulfilled.”
Migrants were seen milling around after despite the announcement, but authorities said they would stop processing people by Wednesday evening.
Migrants have flocked to the Calais region for decades, but the camp has grown as Europe’s migrant crisis expanded. As it evolved into a massive slum supported by aid groups, France finally decided to shut it down.
As the reality of the mass evacuation took hold, fearful migrants from Afghanistan, Sudan, Eritrea, Syria and Pakistan braced for a new reality. Some pledged to just keep moving.
“This jungle is no good,” said Muhammad Afridi, 20, from Pakistan. “We go to a new jungle.”
The main alley through the camp near the city of Calais burned overnight, leaving skeleton-like hulks on either side of the road. Firefighters delved into the camp’s deepest recesses, trying to prevent a massive conflagration. Gas canisters popped as they exploded in the heat. One aid group’s truck burst into flames.
Migrants stood and watched. Some laughed.
Steve Barbet, a spokesman for the regional authorities, said one migrant was hospitalized. About 100 migrants were evacuated.
The camp once housed 6,300 migrants, according to authorities, but aid groups said the number was much higher.

[NY Post] A former Secret Service officer who published an explosive tell-all from his days guarding the Bill and Hillary Clinton White House is planning to file a defamation lawsuit against his detractors, The Post has learned.
A lawyer for Gary Byrne, whose book "Crisis of Character: A White House Secret Service Officer Discloses His Firsthand Experience with Hillary, Bill, and How They Operate," has sent notices to Media Matters for America and David Brock informing them that he intends to file suit.
"Officer Byrne will bring legal action against you, in your personal capacity, and against Media Matters," a lawyer for the former Secret Service officer wrote to Brock, a loyal Clinton ally and the founder of the liberal advocacy group Media Matters.
The letter requests Brock and Media Matters to "hold" all records and communications associated with their communications regarding Byrne -- including "Any communication(s) between David Brock and The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton" regarding the former Secret Service officer, suggesting there might be collusion between the campaign and her defenders.

[Wash Times] WOFFORD HEIGHTS, Calif. -- Angel Gilberto Garcia-Avalos had been deported five times in just the past four years, yet each time he has managed to sneak from Mexico back into the U.S., where he ended up in more mischief: driving without a license, attempted burglary and felony weapons charges.
In August, he graduated to full-fledged mayhem, sparking a fire in the Sequoia National Forest that has already cost the government $61 million and left some of the country's most beautiful landscape scarred for years to come.
Garcia, who pleaded guilty last month and faces 13 months in prison, had only recently been released from the Kern County Jail. He likely would have been deported again, but local authorities were unable to report him to immigration authorities because of California's new sanctuary city law, which prohibited the sheriff from communicating with federal agents.
Federal agents now say they will kick Garcia out of the country once he serves his latest sentence, but the damage has already been done.
At a point along State Highway 155 through the Sequoia National Forest, the smell of cedar gives way to the stench of soot. Ash-blackened trees above and below the roadway show the path of the blaze.

[Wash Times] Sean Hannity is offering a one-way ticket out of the country for President Obama and his family.
"I have an offer for the president," the outspoken Donald Trump supporter said Tuesday on his eponymous radio show.
"I will charter a plane for you and your family," Mr. Hannity said. "I will make sure it's as big a plane as Air Force One, what you have grown accustomed to, in other words. Taxpayer-funded plane. I don't know where I'm going to get it. Maybe I'll ask Trump if I can charter his plane for Obama. [Daily Caller] Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford wrote a Medium blog post Monday to remain committed to its military oath amid the 2016 election.
"What we must collectively guard against is allowing our institution to become politicized, or even perceived as being politicized, by how we conduct ourselves during engagements with the media, the public, or in open or social forums," Dunford reminded troops.
Dunford further urged service members that the military must remain committed to the chain of command structure until the next administration comes in, and that the military should not undermine its credibility in the interim with the next president. "I have a duty to protect the integrity and political neutrality of our military profession," he continued.
Dunford’s comments also come amid increased concern that the U.S. military is becoming too politicized. He is reportedly furious with Retired Marine Gen. John Allen and Retired Army Gen. Michael Flynn for actively campaigning on behalf of the Democratic and Republican presidential nominees.
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey openly rebuked Allen and Flynn for injecting themselves into the political process.
"The American people should not wonder where their military leaders draw the line between military advice and political preference," he lamented in a letter to The Washington Post. He continued "our nation’s soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines should not wonder about the political leanings and motivations of their leaders."

People pretty much would like to know "what are we fighting this war for?". Especially when it comes to dying or living maimed for life for "the cause".

More wars or conflicts are fought over control of real estate, both at the tactical level and strategic levels. The operative word here being 'control.' Ideology and politics play a role, but it would appear to be in many cases, a minor role.
I still love the flag, my mother, apple pie, parades, John Philip Sousa music, and marching bands. Am I conflicted ?

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Less than one week after taking over as the Marine Corps’ top officer, Gen. Joseph ‘Fighting Joe’ Dunford, is proposing controversial changes to Marine culture as the Corps continues to shift focus after more than a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
His first order of business: Eliminate the phrase “Ooh-rah” from Marine lexicon.
Also to be done away with will be similar expressions like Err, Yut, and Rah, which sources say the Commandant considers a mockery of traditional Marine customs and courtesies. Finally, the term YAT-YAS will not only be forbidden but stricken from any historical records as Dunford feels it may be the most inane battle cry in the history of warfare.
Insiders claim the order stems from a physical altercation which took place immediately following his remarks at the change of command ceremony on Friday, which left a number of Marines with injuries ranging from eye gouges to one severe hematoma of the taint.
Witnesses to the incident say the new Commandant was being congratulated by various well wishers when he reportedly smacked a Master Gunnery Sgt. after he was addressed with “Ooh-rah sir.”
“Shut your filthy sewer, pogue,” growled the general as he struck the senior SNCO in the mouth with an open hand. “That expression is a weak affectation and I won’t stand for it.”
The commandant then turned and kicked the Color Sergeant of the Marine Corps in the groin. Marine officials claim Dunford was enraged that one member of the color guard fell out during the ceremony. A number of aides were also assaulted when they attempted to physically restrain the general and remove him from the scene.
“That’s what happens when we appoint an air winger as Commandant,” Dunford said, as he was finally escorted from the parade deck. “I will not allow this pernicious weakness to further infect my Corps.”
An All-Marine administrative message (ALMAR) is expected to be released this week officially banning “Ooh-rah” and making its utterance punishable under articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Gen Dunford falls in line as one of the most political General officers in this generation. For him to dictate this to the retired is an attempt to segregate a class of people already somewhat isolated, US military members, as insignificant and not worthy of taking place in our democracy. His whole context supports the Dems, Obama and Hillary anyway, belief that the military are nothing more than servants to their cause, not defenders of the constitution.

[Daily Caller] In the small city of Colstrip, a one-time "best sports town" in Montana, the football community has become more about political football than the actual sport.
The 2,300 residents in Southeast Montana face an uphill battle to keep the city alive against an onslaught of legal battles and a major anti-coal crusade launched by outsiders.
"If you look around these coal mines and this coal plant, it’s the lifeblood of the area," Jason Small, the head of the local Boilermakers Union, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. "The only reason there is anything here is the support industry for these big capital projects, other than agriculture."
There is roughly one park for every hundred people in Colstrip, recreation made possible by the high wages and local tax base that came with coal mining. But none of that matters to the environmentalists looking to wean America off coal. In July, an out of court agreement was reached to close two of the four units of Colstrip’s coal-fired power plant by 2022. The Sierra Club and the Montana Environmental Information Center, which sued the plant in 2013, see the closure as a victory.

The outsiders work to shut these facilities down because it doesn't effectively impact them in any tangible way that they can see.
They also don't have to live with the immediate or sustained consequences, driving their solar powered cars and whatnot.

[Daily Caller] The Islamic State is throwing as many fighters as it can into the Iraqi city of Mosul in a desperate attempt to push back against coalition forces, according to the Pentagon.
ISIS reinforcements from Syria and Iraq are entering Mosul from areas west of the city, which are still under the terrorist group's control. ISIS leaders inside the city have been forced to conscript administration officials and other non-traditional fighters in order to counter the coalition's offensive.
"ISIL (ISIS) continues to augment its manpower from the outside," Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters Monday. "We see them taking administrative and support personnel, people who are not normally involved in arms, and they are arming them."
Davis noted that despite the reinforcements, ISIS is having difficulty with its command and control capabilities thanks in part to coalition air strikes.
ISIS's decision to arm every potential fighter it can is not surprising. The terrorist group is woefully outnumbered, with less than 5,000 fighters in the city. In turn, the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) have deployed 18,000 men, while the Kurdish Peshmerga have fielded around 10,000. Approximately 2,000 Iraqi federal police are also supplementing the coalition force.

[Daily Caller] A professor who specializes in the Civil War appeared on a special edition of "The Jim Bakker Show" last week to warn America that the 2016 presidential election could lead to another secessionist melee.
"I’m a civil war historian," the Montreat College professor, William Forstchen, explained by way of introduction.
The U.S. election of 1860 "is the closest I can parallel this to," Forstchen said.
"And we all know what the price was," the professor then said. "When we went to a civil war, they killed 660,000 young men because we became so divided."

No matter who wins this upcoming election.it seems to be assured that the margin is going to be very close, to marginal.
Unless there is some ( miraculous ) landslide for either one or the other candidate, the other side is going to squeal "FOUL".
....and the result will be a continued and perhaps endemic sense of " lack of Legitimacy" for at least half of the population of the country.
The military IS politicized whether we like it or not. The mere fact that some military leadership are saying "steady, steady"...confirms the feeling of the common military leadership. They are only human and they are the true patriots ( men who have laid their lives at the disposal of their country and will offer up everything for the nation ).
They also take an Oath to the Constitution. It may become obvious that that Oath may be in question to some corrupt politicians.
The Military may be the fallback to an Election's veracity. Hard Choices may be necessary. The American people are not being asked by the present administration about immigration. They are lied to and forced to comply in a multitude of ways. They are out of work. Their dreams are stifled. And that populace is well armed.
The govt. IS actually afraid of the American population....and the military at some point may decide to not fire on the people...as in the Hungarian revolt.
All it takes is a single spark.

We said VES. The chances of the US Military firing on civilians is low. They know our fight is not with them, we are both fighting for the constitution. I will find it difficult for commanders and senior NCO's to be willing to fight civilians, who would most likely be ex military. Ya, I assume now that I'm thinking on that line, which I hate to BTW, there might be an initial fight or event before cooler heads in DOD take control. This entire discussion is both disturbing and frightening.

49 Pan, Google us troops firing on civilians. There have been several incidents in US history, from the Whiskey Rebellion in 1791 to the eviction of the Bonus Army in 1932. I don't count the Kent State shootings in 1970.
The issues and sides are not as clear cut as they were in places like Hungary where the troops joined the protestors.
Enlisted troops are trained to follow orders, as they should be. If the lieutenant says "Fire!", they fire. The question is whether the lieutenant would give the order.

It also turned out that the FBI had its own informant and agent-provocateur roaming the crowd, a part-time Kent State student named Terry Norman, who had a camera. Mr. Norman also was armed with a snub-nosed revolver that FBI ballistics tests, first declassified in 1977, concluded had indeed been discharged on that day.
Then there was the testimony of an ROTC cadet whose identity remains unknown, one of the pervasive redactions concealing the names of all the FBI agents who conducted the interviews and of all those whom they interrogated. Although presumably angry over the demonstrators’ destruction of the campus ROTC building, the cadet’s calm, precise firsthand account nonetheless carries a credibility not easily dismissed.
Before the fatal volley, the ROTC cadet told the FBI, he “heard one round, a pause, two rounds, and then the M-1s opened up.”
The report continued that the cadet “stated that the first three rounds were definitely not M-1s. He said they could possibly have been a .45 caliber. … [He] further stated that he heard confirmed reports of sniper fire coming in over both the National Guard radio and the state police radio.”
The cadet also told the FBI he observed demonstrators carrying baseball bats, golf clubs and improvised weapons, including pieces of steel wire cut into footlong sections, along with radios and other electronic devices “used to monitor the police and Guard wavelengths.”
Separately, a female student told the FBI she “recalled hearing what she thought was [the sound of] firecrackers and then a few seconds later [she] heard noise that to her sounded like a machine gun going off, but then later thought it may have been a volley of shots from the Guard.”
Absent the declassification of the FBI’s entire investigative file, many questions remain unanswered — including why the documents quoted here were overlooked, or discounted, in the Justice Department’s official findings.

[LATimes] U.S. military officers watched grainy video feeds at a small operations center in Baghdad on Tuesday as Predator drones tracked and killed three reputed Islamic State leaders -- one after another -- in the offensive on Mosul.
The targeted air strikes were due in large part to intelligence extracted from cellphones, computer hard drives, memory cards and hand-written ledgers recovered from battlefields and towns taken from Islamic State fighters.
Recently captured intelligence also has proved useful in providing clues to detecting potential terrorist plots, tracking foreign fighters and identifying Islamic State supporters around the globe, U.S. officials said.
The largest data trove was recovered when U.S.-backed Syrian rebel forces recaptured Manbij, an Islamic State stronghold in northern Syria, in mid-August. Intelligence agencies recovered more than 120,000 documents, nearly 1,200 devices and more than 20 terabytes of digital information, officials said.
Brett McGurk, the special presidential envoy for the coalition fighting Islamic State, said the Manbij data trove has been especially invaluable.
In particular, the intelligence from Manbij and other sources has led to arrests or broken up plots in 15 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America and in Canada, McGurk told a news conference on Oct. 7.
"If we get a phone off of a dead ISIL fighter in Manbij and it has a number of telephone numbers into a particular capital or city around the world, we share that information with the coalition members so that they can conduct their own investigation," McGurk said, using an acronym for Islamic State.
Intelligence specialists are still combing through the data, but it has led to new details on how fighters are organized within the group's hierarchy. That has helped military planners prepare the ground assault on Mosul that began last week.
The Pentagon recently sent about 100 additional special operations analysts, linguists and technicians to exploit information taken from towns around Mosul as Iraqi and Kurdish ground forces advance through concentric belts of booby traps, snipers and suicide bombers.
The goal is to "make sure we take advantage of the captured enemy material that is coming off of places like Manbij and will come out of Mosul," said Gen. Joseph Votel, commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, who was in Baghdad on Tuesday with McGurk.
The intelligence has allowed U.S. commanders to "understand what [Islamic State is] doing, what it might mean for foreign fighters that have been through there, what it might mean for future plans," he said. "It's a lesson we learned the hard way the last time we were in Iraq."
U.S. forces were slow to break into militants' communications and electronic devices during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, when Votel commanded the 75th Ranger Regiment, the Army's premier light infantry and special operations unit.
He indicated they may have missed opportunities to find clues about the fierce Sunni insurgency that erupted after the invasion and ultimately gave rise to Islamic State.
Now U.S. special operations commanders may forbid launching an airstrike at houses or compounds -- even if known militant leaders are inside -- for fear of destroying a useful cache of information and electronics.
Islamic State leadership includes former Iraqi military officers and others who served under ousted ruler Saddam Hussein. They tend to keep detailed records, officials say, which has helped analysts understand the group's structure and map its hierarchy with tiers and rows.
"The expertise and senior leader cadre sets the pace of sustaining the organization," a U.S. defense official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss internal assessments. "They fashion themselves as a pseudo-governmental structure where you have financiers and ministers and all these other components. You need to take that all away from them."
Targeting by Joint Special Operations Command has killed 39 Islamic State leaders in and around Mosul since July 1, U.S. officials said.
No one is yet sure how Islamic State will fight once Iraqi Security Forces and the Kurdish fighters known as peshmerga break through the group's defensive perimeter around Mosul, or how they will leave the city.
Before they abandoned Ramadi earlier this year, militants planted booby traps in "baby cribs and closets" so people could not return to their homes, McGurk said Tuesday.
The coalition campaign to wipe out the group's leadership has taken a growing toll on the group's ability to control territory and to conduct sustained offensives, according to U.S. officials.
Small groups of militants launched surprise attacks last week in Kirkuk and Rutba, but coalition forces quickly fought back. Kirkuk was recaptured, and Iraqi ground troops, backed by a U.S. B-52 bomber, were pushing them back in Rutba, officials said.
"There's no more leadership for them," said Iraqi Brig. Gen. Tahseen Ibrahim Khafaji. "Who do they have to follow? It's chaos."
During the advance on Mosul, for example, Iraqi forces had to retake Sharqat, a rural town less than a hour's drive to the south.
Islamic State's local leader was killed in an airstrike. When a replacement was dispatched to govern the town and direct fighters, his vehicle also was hit with an airstrike.
Iraqi forces recaptured the town in just two days.
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan Ambassador to Pakistain Omar Zakilwal has slammed the Pak officials for the irresponsible remarks following a deadly attack on a police academy in Quetta city.
Zakhilwal has said the Pak authorities should not offer irresponsible remarks regarding the recent Quetta incidetn as he strongly condemned the attack.
"The Afghan people who witness similar terrorist attacks on our people and soil on daily basis can fully identify with the horror of such crimes against innocent people carried out by terrorist networks such as the AlQaeda affiliated Lashkar e Jhangvi that grabbed credit for last night’s senseless massacre," Zakhilwal said.
According to the local media reports, the Pak Prime Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... was informed that the assailants had come from Afghanistan and were in contact with their handlers in the neighbouring country.
The reports further added that the prime minister said the issue would be taken up with Afghanistan.

"Taliban claims of US casualties near Bagram are false. Taliban rocket destroyed with 0 casualties; 2 minor injuries from an IED," NATO-led RSM said.
Local officials in Bagram district of Parwan earlier said the US military patrol was targeted in an IED attack late on Tuesday evening.
The Taliban group front man Zabiullah Mujahid claimed earlier today that two armored vehicles of the US forces were destroyed and at least 12 soldiers were killed in a suicide kaboom carried out by the group in Bagram.
Bagram is among the relatively volatile districts in northern Parwan province of Afghanistan as the anti-government armed murderous Moslem groups often attempt to carry out attacks on Afghan and foreign forces.
A jacket wallah attacked the convoy of the US forces in the vicinity of Bagram province late in the May this year but no casualties were incurred to the US forces.

A lot of the greatest pilots who ever lived will tell you that Hoover was the greatest pilot who ever lived.
Having been shot down over Nice, France during his 59th mission in World War II, Hoover spent 16 months as a POW, spending much of the time in solitary confinement as punishment for two dozen escape attempts. Finally, he succeeded just before the end of the war by stealing a German fighter.
Had he remained at the POW camp a few days longer, the Allies likely would have reached him. But now he faced possible extinction at the hands of any friendly pilot who would presume his Focke Wulf was manned by the enemy.
Hoover said he hugged a cloud ceiling at about 4,000 feet, figuring he would duck up into it if he was spotted by any Allied aircraft. He planned on flying west until he saw signs of Allied territory. "I wanted to see windmills to be sure," he explained. That would signal friendly Holland.
By the time he reached Holland, Hoover said, "My gas tank was registering close to zero." He chose to land while he still had full control of the fighter, and selected an open field. Hoover dropped the fighter’s landing gear and settled in. Con't.

Local media quoting the Pakistain authorities reported Wednesday that Sharbat Gula was arrested on Tuesday and is in jug for further investigation regarding the alleged forgery in producing the Pak identty card.
Gula who is believed to be in her 40s was arrested from her home for forgery of a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), the FIA sources said. Bibi had Pak and Afghan ID cards in her possession, and both ID cards have been recovered from her, the FIA sources said. Gula has been charged under Section 419, 420 of the Pakistain Penal Code and Section 5(2) of Prohibition of Corruption Act.
She gained global recognition when her photograph was featured on National Geographic Magazine’s cover in 1985 and was linked with Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona.
Gula been residing together with her sons in Nasir Bagh camp established for Afghan refugees since she moved to Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. in 1984.
A short documentary was made by the magazine where she was dubbed the ’Mona Lisa of Afghan war’. Sharbat remained anonymous for years after her first photo made it to the cover until she was rediscovered by National Geographic in 2002.
The documentary was followed by her global recongition when her photograph was featured on National Geographic Magazine’s cover in 1985 and was linked with Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona.
Her story is, tragically, shared by many outside of Afghanistan as well ‐ the most current being the desperate refugees fleeing Syria.

Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals has upheld a decision to acquit 357 people who were tried in the controversial military espionage case, believed to have been pursued by prosecutors linked to the U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen.
In February, a court in İzmir eventually acquitted 357 suspects, including active-duty soldiers, in the trial of a military espionage case in which defendants were accused of “keeping confidential military information and documents.”
The case refers to the 2011 prosecution of 56 members of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on charges of military espionage and blackmailing, including illegal wiretapping, founding a criminal organization, and espionage. The indictment alleged that the accused intended to share information with third parties in return for financial gain.
One of the lawyers of the acquitted defendants, Aykanat Kaçmaz, said the decision of the court of appeals meant the path was now clear for the promotion of commissioned and non-commissioned officers who were under arrest during their trials.
After the initial acquittal of the suspects, an investigation was launched into a number of police officials, including former İzmir Police Chief Ail Bilkay, for organizing a plot against the soldiers embroiled in the case.
Police officers and prosecutors behind the case are thought to be linked to the Gülen movement, a former ally of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) who is now accused by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of attempting to overthrow the government.

At least two civilians were killed by Indian fire along the Working Boundary on Wednesday in Chaprar sector, said a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Eight civilians were also injured in the latest episode of cross-border firing by the Indian forces, the statement added.
"Pakistan Rangers gave a befitting response to Indian unprovoked fire," read the ISPR statement.
A civilian, Sikander, who was injured by Indian fire on October 25, succumbed to his injuries in Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Kharian today.
Meanwhile, the military sources claimed that Pakistani troops ‘effectively’ hit a number of Indian posts along the Line of Control and Working Boundary.
The officials claimed that “five Indian soldiers have been shot while four Indian posts destroyed in Bhimber sector in exchange of fire since yesterday”.
Protest lodged with India
Pakistan earlier today lodged a strong protest with India against "unprovoked" ceasefire violations on Oct 25-26. This is the third such protest lodged within a week.
The director general (South Asia and Saarc), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh on Wednesday to lodge a protest against ceasefire violations by Indian forces across the Working Boundary in the Chaprar and Harpal sectors, and across the Line of Control in the Bhimber sector, a Foreign Office (FO) statement said.
ISPR had said that five civilians had been injured by Indian fire today in the Sialkot sector, in a statement released earlier today.
The ISPR statement claimed that India's Border Security Force resorted to "unprovoked firing" across the Working Boundary in Harpal and Chaprar sectors.
ISPR said that Pakistan Rangers Punjab "befittingly" responded to "unprovoked" Indian firing and shelling.
"Since October 21, four civilians have embraced martyrdom while 21 others were injured at the Working Boundary," the ISPR claimed. Whereas, two people died due to firing along the Line of Control.
The Indian side was asked to investigate the incident and share the findings with Pakistan, and to instruct its troops to respect the ceasefire agreement in letter and spirit, refrain from intentionally targeting the villages and maintain peace along the Working Boundary and LoC.
FO Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria last week alleged that India has committed more than 90 ceasefire violations in 2016.
"During the 2014 provincial assembly elections, India violated ceasefire agreement more than 200 times," Zakaria said. He claimed that Pakistan has "never violated the ceasefire agreement."

[Asharq Al-Awsat] Riyadh- Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday that al Qaeda’s Osama Ali Damjan, no.12 on the wanted list of 85 terrorists, has turned himself in to authorities. Damjan expressed his desire of returning to the Kingdom after spending over seven years abroad travelling from one warzone to another.
Damjan has served al Qaeda in each of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. The wanted fugitive had been recruited by the ultra-hardline terror group for his skills with explosive manufactures.
Osama Ali Abdullah Damjan had contacted security services from abroad expressing a willingness to surrender.
A security spokesman for the Ministry of Interior stated that Damjan arrived in the Kingdom on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
The Security spokesman further said that the fugitive will be treated in according to law. He also renewed the call by the Ministry of the Interior for all those wanted to surrender themselves to security authorities and desert any radical group that only harbors ill will for the Islamic nation, the Saudi state news agency said.
Special authorities arranged for Damjan’s arrival, vetting and medical inspection, the security spokesman added. A meeting with his parents was also fixed.
Information procured by Asharq Al-Awsat shows that Damjan had left for Afghanistan seven years ago, at 24, and has not made a return to the Kingdom since then.
Iran had also played a chief role with hosting al Qaeda fighters and providing safe quarters for operations management as of 2007. Wanted terrorists travelled freely inside Iran, sources said.
Tehran had helped in backing al Qaeda terrorists with plotting attacks against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Pro-Islamic State militants have seized their first big town in the Puntland region of Somalia, officials and residents told VOA. The militants moved into the Red Sea town of Qandala, 90 miles east of Bosaso, in the early hours of Wednesday without any confrontations.
Officials from the Puntland administration have left the town. The chairman of the town, Jama Mohamed Mumin, confirmed to VOA’s Somali Service that the town was seized by “Daesh.”
A resident in the town told VOA Somali that about 60 militants entered the town and hoisted their flag on top of the police station and another historical building.
“Early in the morning they restricted our movement, now they eased restrictions and we are trying to leave the town,” says the resident, who asked not to be identified for fear of being killed security reasons.
He said local elders met with the militants and told them to leave the town but says the militants insisted ‘they are not going anywhere.”
The pro-Islamic State faction in northeastern Somalia is led by Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin, a former al-Shabab cleric who pledged his allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi a year ago. Last month, the U.S. State Department designated Mumin as a global terrorist.

A former al-Shabab member estimates that about 200 pro-IS fighters are in the group. A security expert puts the number a bit higher at 300.
Qandala is a strategic port town facing the coastal towns of Yemen. The former Intelligence Director of Puntland Abdi Hassan said earlier that IS has started delivering supplies through their affiliate faction in Yemen.
How interesting. That could be a two way line of communication: Iranians could drop stuff into Qandala and then have it delivered by local boats.
“They received military supplies from Yemen – weapons, uniform, ISIS sent trainers who inspected their bases, and they have started sending financial support,” he said. “The weapons’ shipment was delivered by sea from Mukallah city in Hadramouth, it has arrived from the Red Sea coast of Somalia in February and March this year.”

[Iran Press TV] Syria has dismissed as baseless recent allegations brought against the Damascus government by Western countries in connection with chemical attacks in the war-torn Arab country.
"The Syrian Arab Republic has repeatedly denied all allegations circulated by some Western circles and their agents about the use of chemical poisonous materials by Syrian sides, like chlorine gas," during military operations against terrorists, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the official SANA news agency on Wednesday.
The statement came four days after an international inquiry blamed Syrian government forces for a toxic gas attack in Qminas in northwestern Idlib province on March 16, 2015.
The accusation was made in the fourth report from the 13-month-long probe by the United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
However, the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits... the Syrian Foreign Ministry statement said that there was no "tangible evidence" for the inquiry's findings.
"Syria has repeatedly warned against repercussions of politicizing this issue regarding the credibility of the work of international relevant sides," the ministry added.
It also stressed that the Syrian government remains committed to all its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention, a multilateral treaty that bans chemical weapons and requires their destruction.

[ARA News] Idlib – Syrian warplanes launched on Wednesday several airstrikes on the northwestern Idlib Governorate. One of the strikes hit a primary school in the the village of Hass, causing casualties among school children, eyewitnesses and activists reported.
At least 19 people were killed in Wednesday’s air raids in Idlib suburb, including 15 children.
“The airstrikes directly hit residential buildings and the Hass school, which proves the regime’s intention to kill as many civilians as possible,” media activist Omran Samasra told ARA News.
A doctor in a makeshift hospital in Idlib said they received more than 16 wounded people subsequent to the airstrikes.
“Some of them are in critical condition,” he told ARA News. “The death toll may rise in the next few hours as we suffer a shortage of equipment and staff.”
“We installed this field hospital to treat the wounded, but we don’t have sufficient equipment and medicine to provide the necessary treatment to those heavily wounded,” he added.
According to local source, the Syrian air force launched over ten raids on Idlib on Wednesday.

The NSA informed the ambassador that the turbans who attacked the police training college were constantly in contact with their leadership and handlers in Afghanistan.
The American ambassador was also briefed by the NSA on Pakistain’s efforts to improve the current security situation in the country through implementation of the National Action Plan.
Hale, on the occasion, condemned the attack in Quetta and offered his regrets. He also offered American support for the same.

North Korea's two failed missile tests earlier this month could have involved the KN-08 intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the continental U.S., not the shorter-range Musudan missile identified by the U.S. and South Korean militaries, an American expert was quoted as saying.
Jeffrey Lewis, a nonproliferation expert and director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), raised the possibility, citing satellite photos of the launch site, which was enhanced with a near infrared band of light.
The U.S. Strategic Command said that the two missile tests, which took place on Oct. 15 and Oct. 20, are presumed to have involved the Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missiles. South Korea's military gave the same assessment. The two countries said the North's missile exploded after take-off in both tests.
"We're not fully persuaded that it was a Musudan," Lewis told the Washington Post. "We still think people are being too quick to jump to the conclusion that this was a Musudan. Even if it's only 50/50, being shocked half of the time is still bad."
Lewis said that the satellite imagery shows burn scars left on the pavement and grass at the launch site in the North's northwest after the missile tests, and the scars are much bigger than what had been seen after the previous Musudan tests.
He also said that one of the scars was "really big," noting that it was possible that the explosion damaged the launch vehicle on which it was mounted. The second scar was smaller, suggesting that the missile flew some distance before whatever went wrong, he was quoted as saying.
The KN-08 missile has been considered a key concern for the U.S. due to its potential capability to reach the U.S. Referring to the missile, U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Tuesday that the communist nation is capable of launching "a missile that has a weapon on it that potentially could reach parts of the United States."

[ARA News] Duhok – Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi army troops on Wednesday continued their operations against the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group in the vicinity of Iraq’s northwestern city of Mosul, and secured at least nine villages.
The Peshmerga hit ISIS positions in the eastern suburb of Mosul, using heavy artillery.
“Subsequent to fierce clashes, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces expelled ISIS from several villages in the Hamdaniya District in eastern Mosul, including the Qaraqoush Village,” a Peshmerga officer told ARA News.
The officer added that their forces also pushed ISIS out of the Shabak-populated village of Khersbad, about 10km north of Mosul.
In the meantime, the Iraqi Central Command reported the liberation of a number of villages in the area stretching from Mosul to Bartali District, including Khizne Tebe, al-Muafaqiyah, Tawabza and Tahrawa.
Backed by the Peshmerga, the Iraqi security forces also regained the town of Qasabat Kermlis in Mosul suburb.
This comes just few days after the Kurdish Peshmerga expelled ISIS from 24 villages as part of the battle for Mosul.

[Asharq Al-Awsat] Taiz – Landmines planted by Houthi militias and ousted Ali Abdullah Saleh in Taiz Province, the third largest Yemeni city in south Capital Sana’a, have caused numerous civilian casualties regardless if they were women, children or elderly.
These militias have not committed themselves to Mine Ban Treaty of 1997, which Yemen joined in 1998.
Landmines planted by Houthi militias have caused the injury and death of many civilians and have hindered the passage of families displaced from their house as Houthis have planted these mines on the main streets that link the city to other villages in the province.
The militias have also planted mines in neighborhoods, especially those close to become under the control of the national army and the Popular Resistance forces.
Many landmines have caused the explosion of emergency vehicles, thus causing the death of the paramedics, who were supposed to treat the injured.
On August 9, 2016, 11 civilians, including seven children, were killed by an anti-vehicle mine in al-Waziyah, a western part of Taiz; two of the children were 4 years old.
While total figures for landmine casualties in Taiz are not available, landmines killed at least 18 people and wounded more than 39 in the Taiz governorate between May 2015 and April 2016, according to Against Mines National Organization (AMNO), a Taiz-based group.
All but one of the 18 deaths documented were caused by antivehicle mines while nine of 11 permanent injuries were from antipersonnel mines.
The group documented that landmines in Taiz killed five children, caused permanent disabilities to four and wounded 13.
For his part, Arms Director at Human Rights Watch Steve Goose said: “Houthi and allied forces are showing cold-hearted cruelty toward civilians by using landmines.”
“Yemen’s warring parties should immediately stop laying mines, destroying mines in their possession and ensuring that demining teams can work unimpeded so that families can return home safely.”

The annual operation, Shafaq operation, was launched earlier this year in response to Taliban’s annual spring offensive the group announced in mid-April this year.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement, said President Ghani promises Dire Revenge for the blood of the citizens of the country as he strongly condemns the killing of the civilians in Ghor province.
The statement further added that the terror groups and the enemies of the Afghan people have conducted several attacks on peaceful demonstrations, sacred religious places, religious mourners, and passengers during the recent months.
It also added that the such crimes will further thicken the criminal cases of the criminals who will one day appear in court and respond to the Afgan people.
Provincial governor Mohammad Nasir Khazi said the women and kiddies were also among those killed by the loyalists of the terrorist group.
He said ISIS loyalists kidnapped and killed the civilians after one of their commanders was killed during a shootout which erupted as the terror group fighters were attempting to take cattles of the local resident with them.
There are still conflicting reports regarding the number of casualties of the incident as the provincial governor’s front man say at least 33 people were killed.
However, denial ain't just a river in Egypt... the provincial council chief Fazal-ul-Haq Ihsan said at least 23 people were killed by the loyalists of ISIS terrorist group.

Indeed - although I wonder who was so tone-deaf to the PR aspects as to even start the process in the first place. Didn't anyone have the slightest idea of how very bad it would look, clawing back the money ten years after the fact, after the soldiers had already held up their side of the bargain?
I doubt that the soldiers who have already made payments will be reimbursed, though. Pity, but the Big Green Military Machine will always have the last word.

A search of his home in Agoura Hills, a city northwest of Los Angeles, turned up five rifles, a shotgun, seven pistols and more than 250 pounds (113 kilograms) of ammunition, including modified high-capacity magazines, she added.
"The right to free speech is a hallmark of our society," Commander Horace Frank, of the LAPD's Counter Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau, told a news conference. "But that right is not and cannot be unabated.
"Mr. Feigin broke the law when he threatened the lives of the individuals at the Islamic Center."
Omar Ricci, chairman of the Islamic Center, told AFP that staff became concerned after Feigin, who he said works in real estate, posted a message on the center's Facebook page in September and then followed up with the threatening calls.
"Generally speaking, the threats were against the religion of Islam, the Moslem community," he said. "And it was enough to cause fear in the person that was taking the call."
Feigin, who was released on $75,000 bail, could not be reached for comment and it was unclear if he had an attorney.
He is due to appear in court on November 10 and faces up to four years in prison if found guilty.
Ricci said the center has had to boost security in the wake of the threats and rising anti-Moslem sentiment in the United States.

- 'Toxicity toward Moslems' -
Hate crimes against American Moslems have soared to their highest level since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, according to a report published earlier this year by researchers at California State University, San Bernardino.
The surge has been attributed to last year's terror attacks in Gay Paree, Brussels and the California city of San Bernardino, as well as anti-Moslem rhetoric during the U.S. presidential campaign.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has called for a ban on Moslems entering the United States and for a national registry of Moslems in the country.
Ricci said he has noticed a spike in anti-Moslem sentiment that has spread fear among the community that numbers about half a million in Southern California.

Trade group American Petroleum Institute will issue at 4:30 p.m. EDT (2030 GMT) a weekly report of crude stockpiles and other oil supply-demand data, ahead of an official report by the U.S. government's Energy Information Administration on Wednesday. Analysts polled by Reuters expected the data would show crude stocks rose 800,000 barrels last week, after a drop of more than 5 million barrels in the week to Oct. 14.
"The sentiment is it's a bit more negative," said Scott Shelton, energy futures broker with ICAP in Durham, North Carolina. "There are some expectations that we can see a crude build."
A rallying dollar, which makes greenback-denominated crude less affordable to holders other currencies weighed further on oil, as did falling Wall Street share prices.
The market is also "a bit rubbery in the knees" due to uncertainty around OPEC's planned production cut, said Donald Morton, who runs an energy-trading desk at Herbert J. Sims & Co in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Before this week, prices rose about 13 percent over a three-week span after OPEC announced on Sept 27 its first planned output cut in eight years to combat the steep slump in crude prices, which are far below 2014 highs above $100 a barrel.

The kaboom caused injuries to coppers Mohammad Nazir and Mian Liaqat Jan.
They were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital where the former died.
The other blast took place when personnel of the Bomb Disposal Unit were clearing the area, the official said. Policeman Mohammad Zubair sustained injuries in this attack.
SP Bilal Furqan said that he was overseeing security arrangements in the area when one of the blasts occurred, "just moments after my vehicle passed the area".
"Perhaps the assailants intended to hit my vehicle but the device did not go off when my vehicle was in its range because of a jammer installed in the automobile," he added.
[Dawn] A member of an anti-polio vaccination team worker was gunned down in Khyber Agency on Wednesday, DawnNews reported.
The incident took place in Jamrud Tehsil where unidentified gunmen fired shots at a polio vaccinator, sources said.
The injured worker, Fazal Amin, was shifted in critical condition to Hayatabad Medical Complex where he succumbed to his injuries.

Polio vaccination drives are underway across Pakistan, one of only two polio endemic countries left in the world.
Last year, the number of polio cases recorded in Pakistan soared to 306, the highest in 14 years. Pakistan has, however, witnessed a 62 per cent drop in polio cases in 2016, according to the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS).
Attempts to eradicate polio have been badly hit by militant attacks on immunisation teams due to claims propagated by the Taliban that the vaccination drive is a front for espionage or a conspiracy to sterilise Muslims.
These rumours have also made inhabitants of lesser-developed parts of the country more wary of allowing immunisation.
The Taliban stepped up attacks targeting polio immunisation teams after Pakistani doctor Shakeel Afridi was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency to set up a hepatitis immunisation drive as part of efforts to track down Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden.

Two women who U.S. prosecutors say led an online group in raising money to support the Somali insurgent group al-Shabab were convicted by a federal judge Tuesday following a trial in U.S. District Court in Virginia.

“These women funneled money to a terrorist organization which was conducting a violent insurgency campaign in Somalia,” U.S. Attorney Dana Boente said in a written statement.
“National security is the top priority in this office and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute those who provide material support to terrorists,” Boente said.
It was not clear who represented the two women in the proceedings.

Prosecutors said Jama and Dhirane sent the money they raised through the chat room to financiers of al-Shabab in Somalia and Kenya, referred to as the “Hargeisa side” and the “Nairobi side,” respectively.
Jama, of Reston, Virginia, and Dhirane, of Kent, Washington, were arrested in July 2014, along with a third woman, Francine Farhia Hassan, who was taken into custody in the Netherlands.
At the time of those arrests, two other women accused of being involved in the operation, Fiona Fardowsa Jama Mohamed and Beatrice Barira Hassan Abdullahi, were named as fugitives.
The Group of Fifteen included women from Somalia, Kenya, Egypt, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Canada, as well as Minneapolis, according to evidence at trial.
Prosecutors said recorded calls between the Group of Fifteen showed that they had close contacts with al-Shabab leadership and that its members were heard laughing about 2013 attacks on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi and the Boston Marathon.
Jama and Dhirane were each convicted of conspiracy and providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and face a maximum of 15 years in prison when they are sentenced in January.

Al Sumeria News stated “Two teenagers from the Popular Resistance killed an ISIS member who was stationed in al-Hayy al-Arabi area in Mosul, then escaped to a house in the residential area,” adding that, “Dozens of armed ISIS members surrounded the house, then violent clashes broke out between them and the two youths who resisted ISIS courageously.”
“Clouds of smoke rose from the house after being set ablaze,” Al Sumaria explained. “The fate of the two youths are unknown,” Al Sumaria revealed.
The attacks against ISIS members in the city of Mosul started to increase as a result of a growing popular uprising against the presence of the terror group in the city.
The joint security forces, backed by the Army Aviation and international coalition forces, continue advancing in the battle to liberate Mosul from ISIS occupation.

The footage showed security members, who are said to be from al-Hashd al-Shaabi’s forces torturing children for fleeing the ongoing military battles in Mosul.
The video was published on accounts close to al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces that are deployed near the city of Mosul but its credibility could not be ensured yet.
Earlier, Human Rights Watch warned of organized killing and torture by al-Hashd al-Shaabi motivated by sectarian hatred against civilians in the areas of battle against the Islamic State.
Al-Hashd al-Shaabi was formed in 2014 for deployment against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The organization was formed by uniting existing militias under the “People’s Mobilization Committee” of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior.

[ARA News] Mosul – Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants arrested on Wednesday dozens of people in Iraq’s northwestern Mosul City, after accusing them of attacking its security headquarters, local sources reported.
This comes just one day after an anonymous group attacked a building for the ISIS-led Islamic Police –also known as Diwan al-Hisba– in central Mosul.
“The main Hisba headquarters in Wadi Hajar District of Mosul was attacked and burned by an anonymous group. ISIS has subsequently arrested more than 25 people suspected of participating in the attack,” local media activist Abdullah al-Malla told ARA News.
ISIS militants have reportedly broke into civilian houses in the areas of Hammam al-Alil, al-Areej, Wadi Hajar and al-Mansoura in search for those responsible for the attack on the Hisba headquarters.
“The arrestees, including young men and elderly, were taken to the Mosul Detention Centre for interrogation on the incident,” al-Malla reported, citing an ISIS member.
The incident coincided with ongoing military operations by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi troops against ISIS in the vicinity of Mosul–the ISIS main bastion in Iraq.
“The burning of the Hisba headquarters caused a state of confusion in ISIS’ ranks, as the attack was carried out by a local cell,” the head of Nineveh Media Centre Raafat al-Zarari told ARA News.
“Th attack on al-Hisba indicates that the anti-ISIS activists inside the city of Mosul started to hit the group from the inside as the US-backed Kurdish and Iraqi forces continue combatting the group in Mosul suburb.”

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Wednesday he wanted U.S. troops out of his country, perhaps in the next two years, underlining his intention to press ahead with a major realignment of his country’s foreign and security policies.
He said this while in Beijing.
It is not the first time Duterte has made this kind of threat, but his two-year timetable for a U.S. military exit appeared designed to reinforce his break-the-mold message to Washington and neighbors in Asia, particularly powerhouse China.
So far, however, his administration has failed to follow through on previous pledges to remove a small contingent of U.S. counterterrorism troops from the southern island of Mindanao or to notify Washington of an end to military exercises.
The United States “has received no formal communication from the government of the Philippines expressing a desire to make specific changes to our relationship or alliance,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday at a news briefing in Washington. “The United States remains committed to our pursuit of shared objectives” in keeping with the “seven-decade alliance between our two countries,” he said.
Earnest said Duterte’s comments appear to be “rhetoric at this point,” although they do “contribute to some uncertainty.” He said there were no plans yet for President Obama to meet with Duterte at an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Peru next month, but he did not rule it out.
Rhetoric or not, we need to wait the guy out. We wouldn't want the Chinese to have basing rights in the Philippines.
The Philippines is one of the oldest U.S. allies in Asia and hosted permanent U.S. military bases until they were evicted in 1992. It is also an important Pentagon counterweight to China, whose expansion plans into the South China Sea have dismayed the Philippines and other nations.
“I want to be friends to China,” Duterte told an audience of business representatives in Tokyo, the Associated Press reported. “I do not need the arms. I do not want missiles established in my country. I do not need to have the airports to host the bombers.”

Russia on Oct. 26 withdrew its request to refuel a fleet of Russian warships in Spain, amid pressure from NATO, which raised concerns that the ships could be used to ramp up air attacks in Syria. Vasily Nioradze, a spokesman at the Russian Embassy in Madrid, said Oct. 26 that the request has been canceled, but he gave no details.
The Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and support vessels have streamed through the North Sea and English Channel in recent days heading to the Mediterranean Sea. Russia announced earlier this month that the Admiral Kuznetsov, part of its Northern Fleet, would be sent to the eastern Mediterranean to boost its naval forces in the area.

Spain, a NATO member, regularly allows Russian war ships to stop in Ceuta, which faces the British territory of Gibraltar on Spain’s southern tip. While Ceuta is part of the EU, its NATO status is unclear. At least 57 Russian navy ships have stopped in Ceuta between 2011 – when Moscow started to regularly use the port facilities there – and August 2015, according to the conservative U.S. think tank Heritage Foundation.

It is standard procedure for the names of passengers who perish in aviation disasters to be released by authorities, once their next-of-kin have been notified and given time to digest the terrible news. This did not happen following Monday's crash: why?
The answer to that question lies in the crew members' ties to French spy agency DGSE. Three of the dear departed were directly employed by the agency, the French defence ministry confirmed in the hours following the crash; the other two were employed by CAE Aviation, the firm that leased the plane to the French government.
French military tradition demands absolute secrecy when it comes to the nation’s intelligence operatives, even after their death.
In part, the reticence to name names is down to the secretive nature of DGSE missions. But safety concerns also play a part, said a former French defence official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"DGSE missions often involve high-level targets, and revealing agents’ identities, even after their death, exposes their relatives to unnecessary risk," they said. "They could easily become targets for retaliatory attacks."
The absolute silence surrounding the victims’ identities mirrors what happened last July, when three DGSE agents were killed after their helicopter was shot down over Benghazi in eastern Libya.
Police in the Seyhan district of the southern province of Adana carried out an operation at an apartment after it received a tip-off that two alleged Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants were residing there, detaining seven people.
Two of the militants who were suspected of being potential ISIL suicide bombers were captured in the house in the Yeşilyurt neighborhood of the district, which is also known as “İbo Osman,” while five other suspects were caught in operations at other addresses in the same operation.

Fierce clashes between the Yemeni Army and the militias are raging in Sanaa's Nihm area, with the Saudi-led coalition aircraft providing intensified air support to the army forces, pounding the rebels' sites in the western and northwestern mountainous heights of Nihm.
The artillery also struck Houthi fortifications near the clashes area; the Yemeni Army is advancing in Al-Houl district as breakdowns are witnessed within the militias' ranks.
In Hifan, south of Taiz, fighting erupted between the national army and its allied resistance militants and the Houthi militias, and the Arab coalition fighter planes pounded Houthi targets near a health care center, killing and injuring a number of militants.
Clashes occurred in Serwah, west of Maarib province, after the coalition's air defense intercepted six ballistic missile attacks that were targeting Maarib city.
Observers say the ballistic missile attacks on Maarib were the most violent since legitimate forces of Yemen took control of the city.

Turkey is considering deploying more troops to the Bashiqa military camp in northern Iraq due to the increasing threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), if the Ankara-Baghdad talks on the status of the camp fail, sources have told the Hürriyet Daily News.
A visiting Turkish delegation presented a draft to Iraqi officials in Baghdad on Oct. 17 where the parties amended some of the articles following proposals by the Iraqi side, Turkish officials said.
It's for the children...
The agreement will identify the current status and future of the Turkish troops, with Turkey insisting the soldiers remain stationed in Bashiqa until the end of the Mosul offensive. A formula that would bring the status of the Bashiqa camp under the mandate of the coalition forces has long been proposed by Turkey.
The next round of talks between Ankara and Baghdad will be held upon a reply from the Iraqi side.

[DENVER.CBSLOCAL] An ongoing CBS4 voter fraud investigation has uncovered a dozen cases where Coloradans are suspected of voting twice. Previous CBS4 Investigations revealed ballots cast in the names of Coloradans who had been dead for months‐ sometimes years- before votes were cast in their names.
In six of the new cases, voting records show the same people voting twice in Colorado elections. In another six cases, people are suspected of voting in Colorado and another state during the same election cycle.
You’d be surprised how often people double vote," said Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. "Two of the cases are serial double voters. I think people discover they can get away with it and keep doing it."
Lincoln Wilson, a registered Republican from Hale, in Northeast Colorado, is accused of voting in both Colorado and Kansas in 2010, 2012 and again in 2014. Wilson told CBS4 he voted in both states, but only "voted on local issues" and "didn’t vote twice for President."
Wilson is one of five Coloradans now charged by the State of Kansas for voting in both states.
Randall Killian pleaded guilty to voting in Douglas County, Colorado and Kansas in the 2012 presidential election. Ron Weems pleaded guilty to voting in Teller County, Colorado and Kansas in both 2012 and 2014. Both men were fined for their offenses.
Kansas has also charged James Criswell of Douglas County and Sharon Farris of Denver with double voting. Their cases have not been resolved yet.

At least four Djiboutian soldiers were killed when a suicide truck bomber targeted an African Union base in Beledweyne in central Somalia on Tuesday noon, the deadliest attack on the AU troops since 2015.
Sheikh Ali Dheer said Tuesday’s car bomb attack on the AMISOM base in Beledweyne town was a retaliation for “immorality” committing by Djiboutian soldiers in Hiiraan region in central Somalia.
Djibouti has deployed two battalion of soldiers to Somalia to take part an AU mission to help the UN-backed weak federal government in the fight against Al Shabaab, a militants linked with Al Qaeda.
