Oops! CNN accidentally confirms story that Brit intell passed along Trump communications to Obama admin
[American Thinker] Lawyers are trained never to ask a question of a witness if they don’t already know the answer. But it is quite different in journalism ‐ at least in principle, if the principle is getting at the truth. But alas, in these days of fake news and fanatical dead-ender opposition to President Trump, those MSM TV networks committed to driving Trump from office might want to consider retraining for their talking heads. Make them more like lawyers and avoid embarrassnents like that suffered by CNN’s Brian Stelter.

Courtesy of Grabien, here is a disastrous interview in which the guest, Larry Johnson, confirmed the story that Judge Andrew Napolitano told on-air about British intelligence passing along surveillance data involving the Trump administration.

Here is the rush transcript:
STELTER: "Let me ask you about this thing."
JOHNSON: "Sure."
STELTER: "So my sense is that on Monday, Napolitano says this on TV, he says he has Intel sources who believe this is true. You’re saying you were one of those sources, but you didn’t know Napolitano was going to use you like that?"
JOHNSON: "What happened was I communicated, when Donald Trump tweeted what he did Saturday two weeks ago, the next day I was interviewed on Russia today. I had known about the fact that the British, through ghcq were information back channel, this was not at the behest of Barack Obama, let’s be clear about that. But it was done with the full knowledge of people like John Brennan and Jake clapper. Two people I flow within the intelligence community in January, they were very concerned about this because they saw it as an unfair meddling in the politics, but it was a way to get around the issue of American intelligence agencies not collecting."
STELTER: "To be clear, you have this secondhand? So you didn’t get this information directly, you’re hearing from others.
JOHNSON: "I’m hearing it from people who are in a position to know, that’s correct.

#2  Yeah, he's been pretty quiet, Mr. B.

Probably touring the Everglades or something.

Interesting that Johnson states it 'was not at the behest' of anyone in particular but not further stating that the action was unknown by the 'particular'.

Supposedly O was 'incensed' that he was directly named in this and really began to start a rant. Something a true narcissist would feel and do when found out. Then he'd be invited to go on vacation or something and let the cooler heads brush the tracks away.

Normal folks would just go 'huh?' and say something like "He's nuts!" and get on with their lives.

#3  POTUS is sticking with his 'wiretap' story. This from a Salon 21 Nov 16 story. Emphasis added:

My new paramilitary pal fit in perfectly with the armed-camp aesthetic that’s blossomed around Trump Tower. The addition of fences and concrete barriers to already clogged holiday season sidewalks has brought all the joys of the airport security line to Fifth Avenue. The scores of police officers now stationed around the skyscraper give it the air of a military outpost in a hostile land. (All at a bargain basement price of $1 million-plus per day for the city of New York.) Police Commissioner James O’Neill recently reeled off the forces which — in addition to traffic cops, beat cops, and bomb-sniffing dogs — now occupy this posh portion of the city: “specialized units, the critical response command, and the strategic response group, as well as plainclothes officers and counter-surveillance teams working hand-in-hand with our intelligence bureau and our partners in the federal government, specifically the Secret Service.” The armed man in tactical gear who had joined me belonged to the latter agency.

Terror Networks
Using Special Forces Against Terrorism, Trump Seeks to Avoid Big Ground Wars
[NYT] MARA, Chad -- From Yemen to Syria to here in Central Africa, the Trump administration is relying on Special Operations forces to intensify its promised fight against the Islamic State and other terrorist groups as senior officials embrace an Obama-era strategy to minimize the American military’s footprint overseas.

In Africa, President Trump is expected to soon approve a Pentagon proposal to remove constraints on Special Operations airstrikes and raids in parts of Somalia to target suspected militants with the Shabab, an extremist group linked to Al Qaeda. Critics say that the change -- in one of the few rejections of President Barack Obama’s guidelines for the elite forces -- would bypass rules that seek to prevent civilian deaths from drone attacks and commando operations.

But in their two months in office, Trump officials have shown few other signs that they want to back away from Mr. Obama’s strategy to train, equip and otherwise support indigenous armies and security forces to fight their own wars instead of having to deploy large American forces to far-flung hot spots.

Turkey ready to buy Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile system
[Defense Blog] Turkey is ready to buy S-400 surface-to-air missile system from Russia on a loan granted by Moscow, Rostec state corporation CEO Sergey Chemezov said in an interview Tuesday.

"Turkey is expressing its wish, they would like to receive a loan," Chemezov told the Rossiya 24 broadcaster "As soon as an agreement is signed and a decision is made on the amount of the loan, then we will sign a contract on the supply, including the S-400."

The S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler)is an air defence missile system developed by Almaz Central Design Bureau of Russia. The new system replaced the S-300P and S-200 air defence systems of the Russian Army.

China was the first to buy the Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile systems. It was announced in the spring of 2015 that the relevant contract had been signed. According to media outlets, the deal was worth about $3 billion.

Government
‘I Will Name Names': Infighting At EPA Drives Top Official To Resign
[Daily Caller] A senior member of the Trump administration’s beachhead team at the EPA unexpectedly resigned over concerns of the "integrity" of political appointees and career employees.
Swamp draining be hard.
David Schnare was expected to take a top post at EPA, but he abruptly resigned March 15. It wasn’t for personal reasons, but over what he called a "question of integrity." Schnare resigned with the title of assistant deputy administrator.

"This wasn’t about me being angry or upset," Schnare told The Daily Caller News Foundation, saying his resignation had a "much deeper story" than he was willing to disclose at the time.

Skipping to the bottom line:

Reports already suggested tension between President Donald Trump’s political appointees and EPA career staff.

An unnamed career staffer told Politico that EPA employees will "fight actions they deem ill-advised or illegal by quietly providing information of what is happening inside their agencies to advocacy groups and the media."

A small group of EPA staffers began using encryption apps, like Signal, to communicate in a way that can’t be tracked by the White House. The actions may violate federal records law.
May violate federal law? Acts of sedition, encrypted apps, unauthorized software, homebrew servers ?
Other government employees may have started "rogue" Twitter accounts to attack the Trump administration over social media, and a former EPA official suggested agency employees would boycott Trump if he ever came to visit the agency.

Lions’ Gate stabber was part of radical WhatsApp group — police
[IsraelTimes] 18 members of social media group, ’The path to heaven,’ tossed in the clink after attack in which 2 were maimed near Jerusalem’s Old City

Police tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
18 members of a WhatsApp group allegedly used to plan last week’s stabbing attack against coppers in Jerusalem.

Police spokeswoman Luba Sumri said on Sunday that, as part of police investigations into the attack last Monday at Lions’ Gate, it was discovered that the stabber, Ibrahim Mahmoud Mattar, a 25-year-old resident of East Jerusalem’s Jabel Mukaber neighborhood, was a member of a WhatsApp group called "The path to heaven."

According to police, the group was set up to spread murderous Moslem religious views and its members, including Mattar, were recently radicalized.

A day after the attack, police arrested 18 members of the group, residents of East Jerusalem and the West Bank, who are suspected of conspiracy to commit a crime. Eight of the detainees were conditionally released and the remand of 10 suspects was extended until Monday.

Two Border Police officers were moderately maimed in the attack which occurred on in the early hours of the Purim festival.

The assailant was shot and critically maimed during the attack. He later died of his injuries.

According to police, the assailant entered a guard booth where the two officers were stationed holding a large butcher’s knife. Inside the cramped post, he began stabbing and hitting them.

After a brief struggle, one of the officers fought his way out of the guard booth, loaded his weapon and shot the assailant, police said.

The Price of Privilege
[SultanKnish] A proposal has been making its way through the social justice sewer system to have white people pay a 5% privilege tax.

That would be a lot cheaper than the current wealth redistribution built into the tax system.

In 2004, black people made up 12% of the population and 20% of those who didn’t file taxes at all. It was estimated that 50.7% of African American households, 52% of Hispanic households and 37% of white households paid no income taxes.

The numbers would likely have only gotten worse after the recession, which destroyed large numbers of African-American jobs, and the Obama years, which traded social welfare for economic progress,

An otherwise equal tax system with a 5% white privilege tax would be an enormous improvement.

How do you calculate the income losses for a white student shut out of college by affirmative action or a white business owner’s income losses due to preferential business programs aimed at minorities?
Not to mention that incompetent with a degree is a lot more harmful than one without. Mind you, IMO, the real enemy are "cognitive elites", not their dupes.

Trump's first two months prove he's anything but a fascist
h/t Instapundit
[NYPost] When Donald Trump moved into the White House, were you under the impression it was tantamount to either Fifth Avenue Moses coming in to part the filthy waters of the Swamp, or MussoHitler about to bring down the mighty hammer of neo-fascism upon the US?

If so, the joke’s on you. If there’s any ancient tale that presaged the start of the Trump Era, it’s the Voyage to Lilliput in "Gulliver’s Travels."

Gulliver-like, Trump finds himself tied down by a thousand tiny strings, paralyzed by micro-people he can barely detect. Because of their combined power, he can’t do much of anything. If it’s the system vs. Trump, the system is winning, bigly. But it isn’t Berserkeley radicals or marching feminists in pussy hats who are leading the charge to #resist. Resistance to change is as natural in Washington as cherry blossoms in spring.

Here are the design plans for Trump's border wall
[ConservativeRead.com]. Trump’s budget directs $2.6 billion to border wall -- and that’s not all

The specifics of the prototype project and the bidding process are detailed in two, nearly identical 132-page Requests for Proposals, posted Friday night to the Federal Business Opportunities website.

    What kind of wall?

Each prototype will be 30 feet long and built in San Diego, according to the requests for proposals.

Beyond that, bidding contractors have much latitude in what kind of wall they propose.

Under the new timeline established in the documents, interested bidders will have two weeks to create and submit a design concept of what the border-wall prototype will look like, with two design options for companies.
The reporter is a little loose with the word "plans," but interesting nonetheless (imo).

#7  How does the Israeli wall compare?

About 90-95% of the barrier will be constructed as a "multi-layered fence system"[24] with the IDF's preferred design having three fences, pyramid-shaped stacks of barbed wire on the two outer fences, a lighter-weight fence with intrusion detection equipment in the middle, an anti-vehicle ditch, patrol roads on both sides, and a smooth strip of sand for "intrusion tracking".[25]
The barrier contains an on-average 60-metre (200 ft) wide exclusion area.[26] The width of some sections is larger (up to 100 metres (330 ft)) due to topographic conditions.[27] The width of some sections (about 6% of the barrier) is 3 metres (9.8 ft) where the barrier is constructed as a concrete wall up to 8 metres (26 ft) high. These sections are narrower, require less land, and provide more protection against snipers. Wall construction is more common in urban settings, e.g., Qalqilyah and Jerusalem, and in areas where people have been killed by snipers

Malaysia expects more arrests in Kim Jong Nam murder probe
Malaysian police are expected to make a few more arrests, including an "important person", in connection with the murder of Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, state media reported on Sunday.

Police chief Khalid Abu Bakar declined to elaborate on details when speaking to the state media, adding that the arrests would be made at the appropriate time.

"I don't deny we are targeting new individuals including North Korean nationals involved in this murder and we will use all legal channels to apprehend them. Although I can't reveal who they are, we believe there is an 'important person' among them," he told state media.

Malaysian police have previously identified eight North Koreans wanted for questioning in connection with the killing of Kim Jong Nam, some of them hiding in the North Korean embassy. A Vietnamese woman and an Indonesian woman have already been charged in the case.

Kim Jong Nam was killed on Feb. 13, when Malaysian police say two women smeared super toxic VX nerve agent on his face at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

On Thursday, police said Interpol issued a "red notice", the closest to an international arrest warrant, for four North Koreans wanted in connection with the murder.

'Suicide bomber' killed in Ashkona blast
A suspected suicide bomber was killed as four bombs carried by him exploded at a Forces Barrack of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Ashkona in the city on Friday noon.

Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of legal and media wing of Rab headquarters, said an unidentified young man entered the barrack, also the proposed site of the elite force’s headquarters, climbing the wall of adjacent Hajj camp around 1:05pm.

When two Rab members saw the unidentified young man, they challenged him. The young man started running away and at one stage, four bombs, attached to his body, went off with a big bang, leaving him dead on the spot
    "Which spot?"
    "THAT spot!"
and the two Rab men injured.
    A hangnail and an owie...
The body was later sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for autopsy.
Where he was still dead hours later...
The injured Rab officials -- Lance Corporal Mizanur Rahman and Constable Arif -- were taken to the Combined Military Hospital, said Nur-e Azam, officer-in-charge of Airport Police Station.

The OC also said the unidentified young man went to the main gate of the headquarters, saying he would perform ablution. “The Rab members challenged him for his suspicious movement. The bombs went off while he was running away,” he added.

A Detective Branch official said the youth, draped in black pants, was carrying five bombs in a bag with him. “Four of the bombs exploded while he was fleeing and a live bomb was recovered from the spot,” he said.

Born killers: French army grooms eagles to down drones
[France24] MONT-DE-MARSAN (FRANCE) (AFP) - Faced with the risk of drones being used to snoop or carry out attacks on French soil, the air force is showing its claws.

At Mont-de-Marsan in southwestern France a quartet of fearsome golden eagles is being trained to take out unmanned aircraft in mid-flight.

The roar of a departing Rafale fighter jet gives way to the buzz of a drone lifting into the air on a runway at the air base, some 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of Bordeaux.

Suddenly, a loud squawk fills the air as a beady-eyed eagle bears down at breakneck speed from a control tower 200 metres away.

In about 20 seconds the raptor has the drone between its talons, then pins it to the ground and covers it with its broad brown wings.

The drone has been destroyed: Mission accomplished for D'Artagnan.

Sisi to meet Trump in Washington next month
The Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, will meet Donald Trump in Washington next month, Egypt’s leading state-owned newspaper said on Sunday. Al-Ahram said in a front-page report the two leaders will meet during the first week of April, in what will be Sisi’s first visit to Washington since taking office in 2014.

Sisi and Trump have already shown a bond when they met in September on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Cairo and Washington are expected to forge closer ties under Trump following years of tension over the Obama administration’s emphasis on human rights and Cairo’s correct perception that it supported the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt and the US have been close allies for most of the nearly 40 years since Cairo signed a peace treaty with Israel, with Egypt becoming the second largest recipient of US aid after Israel, with some $1.3bn annually in military aid.

Secret Service removes agent who didn't want to take 'a bullet' for Trump
[WashingtonExaminer]. The Secret Service will permanently remove a top special agent from her position after an investigation into her Facebook comments that she would rather not defend President Trump or take "a bullet" from him, but some agents are concerned she will simply be transferred to another government job.

About two weeks ago, the Secret Service placed the agent's prior post -- the special agent in charge of the Denver District, the top job in that office -- on a list of agency openings, according to two Secret Service sources.

Kerry O'Grady, the agent in question, is on administrative leave amid an internal Secret Service investigation into her Facebook comments about Trump.

British troops land in Estonia for Nato mission to deter Russia
British troops have arrived in Estonia as part of a major Nato mission in the Baltic states to deter Russian aggression. Around 120 soldiers from the 5th Battalion The Rifles landed at the Amari airbase on Friday, 25 miles south-west of the capital, Tallinn.

They were welcomed by Estonia’s defence minister, Margus Tsahkna, on their arrival from RAF Brize Norton. Eight hundred British troops are due to be stationed in the country as part of one of the biggest deployments to eastern Europe in decades.

The first batch will set up a UK headquarters in the country before the rest arrive next month. They will work alongside French and Danish forces to “provide a proportionate, defensive and combat-capable force to defend our Nato ally and deter any form of hostile activity against the alliance”, the Ministry of Defence said.

Britain is taking a leading role in the Estonia battlegroup, while other nations are deploying troops to Latvia, Lithuania and Poland as part of Nato’s Enhanced Forward Presence battalion.

Around 300 UK vehicles have also left the UK this week by ferry headed for Estonia, including Challenger 2 tanks, Warrior infantry fighting vehicles and AS90 self-propelled artillery pieces.

    ISIS spook busted in Nangarhar
The spy chief of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group offshoot in Afghanistan has been arrested by the security forces.

The provincial police commandment in Nangarhar said Taj Gul was arrested during an operation conducted in Haska Mina district.

The Afghan National Police (ANP) Special Forces also arrested another suspect having links with the terror group and a pistol, three mobile phones, and a laptop were confiscated.

In the meantime, at least three militants were wounded after attacking some check posts in Pacher Agam district, the police commandment said, adding that the local residents and security forces did not suffer any casualties during the operations.

Nangarhar is among the relatively calm provinces in eastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed militant groups have recently increased their insurgency activities in some parts of the province during the recent years.

This comes as the Afghan forces are busy conducting counter-terrorism operations in the restive districts of Nangarhar under the Shaheen-25 operations launched several weeks ago.

The operations are being conducted with the support of the US forces based in Afghanistan who are providing close-air support under a broader role granted by the Obama administration earlier last year to target the terrorist groups in the country.

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
    Heavy fighting erupts near Damascus
BEIRUT, Lebanon: Heavy clashes rocked eastern districts of the Syrian capital on Sunday after opposition forces and jihadists launched a surprise assault on regime forces there, a monitor and state television said.

Opposition forces and allied jihadists, led by former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh Al-Sham Front, attacked government positions in the Jobar district and advanced into the neighboring Abbasid Square area, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

“They targeted government forces with two car bombs and several suicide attackers,” Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

The Britain-based Observatory had no immediate information on casualties from the clashes.

Control of Jobar — which has been a battleground district for more than two years — is divided between rebels and allied jihadists on one side, and government forces on the other.

Syrian state television reported that the army was “thwarting an attack by terrorists” with artillery fire and had ordered residents to stay inside.

It aired footage from Abbasid Square, typically buzzing with activity but now empty except for the sound of shelling.

AFP correspondents in Damascus said army units had sealed off the routes into Abbasid Square and explosions could be heard across the city.

Several schools announced they would close through Monday, and many civilians cowered inside in fear of stray bullets and shelling.

According to the Observatory, the Islamist Faylaq Al-Rahman rebel group and the Fateh Al-Sham Front — known as Al-Nusra Front before it broke ties with Al-Qaeda — were present in Jobar.

“This neighborhood is the most important front line because it’s the closest rebel position to the heart of the capital,” said Abdel Rahman.

Government forces have long sought to push the rebels out of the district because of its proximity to the city center in Damascus.

But with Sunday’s attack, Abdel Rahman said, “rebels have shifted from a defensive position in Jobar to an offensive one.”

“These are not intermittent clashes — these are ongoing attempts to advance,” he said.

The Observatory said rebels had launched the attack from Jobar as a way to relieve allied fighters in the nearby districts of Barzeh, Tishreen, and Qabun from government attacks.

“Nine regime forces and at least 12 Islamist rebels were killed” in those three districts over the last 24 hours, the Observatory said.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin: 1 dead

Soldier dies in IED attack in Akakouf

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) An Iraqi army soldier died and two others were wounded on Sunday when a bomb hit their patrol west of Baghdad, security sources were quoted saying.

The explosive device exploded at a farmland in Akakouf, west of the capital, while aan army patrol was passing by, killing the soldier and wounding two of his comrades.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but Islamic State militants have said
they had been responsible for several bloody explosions and attacks that hit the capital in the past months, leaving casualties among civilians and security troops.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) says violence in the country left nearly 392 dead and 613 injured, excluding security members, during February. Baghdad was the second most affected province with 120 deaths and 300 injuries, according to the organization’s monthly casualty count. It excludes death toll among security members after Iraqi authorities had asked to get such information exclusively from security commands.

Some observers believe Islamic State have begun to escalate attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses. They are concerned that the group could, however, shift to a guerrilla-style war and lone wolf attacks after the recapture of Mosul.

Taliban uses human shields in Baghlan fighting
Residents in the Baghlan-e-Markazi district of northern Baghlan province have said that the Taliban has destroyed their homes after taking control of their area.

They said that the Taliban changed their homes into military strongholds to battle security forces.

Meanwhile, security officials in Baghlan have also confirmed that the Taliban used civilian homes as shields in battles over the past month.

“Taliban established their trenches inside the residential areas, you know that we had no option except to demolish Taliban barracks,” said Abbas, an ANA colonel in Baghlan.

There are some reports however that one battle between the Taliban and security forces completely destroyed Mangalha village.

According to the residents, the Taliban turned their homes into military barracks after forcing civilians to leave the area.

“The people are very poor, we lost our houses and businesses, we want the government to help us so that we can rebuild our houses,” said another resident Jalil.

“The war has demolished our houses, we are devastated, one month ago we left our houses,” said a resident of Mangalha village Abdul Fatah.

The Taliban took over the village a month ago. They also surrounded an Afghan National Army (ANA) base.

The Afghan security forces however managed to recapture the village. Up to 100 Taliban fighters were killed and wounded during the battles.

Three US troops wounded after Afghan soldier opens fire
An Afghan soldier opened fire on Sunday inside a base in the southern Helmand province, wounding three US soldiers before being shot dead, an Afghan official said.

Colonel Mohammad Rasoul Zazai, an army spokesman, said the soldier had made a “mistake” and had not fired deliberately. A coalition-run Twitter account said an Afghan soldier shot and wounded three American soldiers, without providing further details.
It certainly was a mistake -- for the Afghan soldier. We could ask him if he learned anything from his mistake, except that he's dead...
Several US troops have been killed in Afghanistan in recent years in so-called insider attacks carried out by Afghan police or soldiers. In October, an Afghan man in a military uniform shot dead a US soldier and an American civilian contractor inside a military base in Kabul before being killed.

Last May two Romanian soldiers were killed and a third wounded after two members of a local Afghan police unit they were training shot them.

Camp Shorab in Helmand, previously known as Camp Bastion, is a major former US and British base now run by the Afghan army. The US said in January that about 300 marines would be sent to Helmand to assist Afghan forces battling the Islamist insurgents in intelligence and logistics matters.
Update from Ynet at 6:10 a.m. EDT:
A spokesman for the Afghan military in the south of the country said the Afghan special forces soldier was shot dead after firing at the Americans at Camp Shorab air base at around 3 p.m. local time.

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Israel to ‘continue’ targeting Hezbollah-bound arms in Syria
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that Israel's latest air strikes into Syria targeted weapons bound for Lebanon's Hezbollah, and that it will continue to carry out such raids. Netanyahu’s statement came after Israeli warplanes struck several targets within Syria, and Syria fired missiles back in retaliation.

"When we identify attempts to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah and we have intelligence and it is operationally feasible, we act to prevent it," he said in footage aired on Israel's major television networks.

"That's how it was yesterday and that's how we shall continue to act," Netanyahu added.

Israeli aerial defence systems intercepted one of the Syrian missiles, the Israeli army said, without elaborating. It would not say whether any other missiles struck Israeli-held territory, but said the safety of civilians and aircraft was "not compromised".

Israel is widely believed to have carried out several airstrikes in recent years on advanced weapons systems in Syria – including Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles and Iranian-made missiles – as well as Hezbollah positions.

It rarely comments on such operations and the military statement detailing the raid and comments confirming the operation by the prime minister were highly unusual.

Iraqi airstrike destroys ISIS communications center in western Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Airstrikes by Iraqi fighter jets destroyed Sunday an Islamic State communication facility in western Anbar, according to an Iraqi army officer.

Brig. Gen. Nawman al-Zawbai, commander of the army’s 7th division, was quoted by Aljournal News website saying Iraqi Sukhoi fighters carried out an offensive on Um al-Wiz, Okashat and al-Obeidi, all regions in the western, IS-held towns of Rawa and al-Qaem, killing four members of the extremist group and destroying a communication center run by the extremist group.

The strikes also eliminated a booby-trapping and IEDs workshop, according to Zawbai.

Islamic State held Anbar’s western regions, close to the borders with Syria, since it emerged to proclaim a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” in 2014. Those areas have sustained occasional bombardments by Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets.

There has not been an officially-declared military campaign to free those regions, but the province’s military command launched a brief assault early January that managed to recapture some western villages before stopping again.

Local officials believe Islamic State is holding thousands in those regions to use them as human shields against any future security offensive.

The province’s borders with Syria have recently witnessed exchanges of attacks between IS and border guards.

2 Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen die in Mariwan
[ARA News] The Kurdish rebel group of Zagros Eagles launched an offensive on headquarters of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in the Kurdish town of Mariwan, western Iran.

At least two IRGC members were killed and one was heavily injured and transported to a hospital, informed sources reported on Sunday.

Arash Saleh, representative of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) in Washington, told ARA News: “They [Zagros Eagles] are an independent organization. They announced the anti-IRGC attack and our sources confirmed the occurrence of clashes and some casualties in Mariwan.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Zagros Eagles carry out more attacks during Newroz,” he added.

This year, the Iranian Kurdish parties are spreading the message of jamana, the scarf that the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters wear–which was banned by the Iranian government.

    Iranian Kurds to Unite
Six of the biggest Kurdish parties met two weeks ago in order to organize joint Kurdish New Year celebrations on 21 March and to organize a joint struggle to fight against the Iranian government.

The meeting came after Iraqi Shiite members of the parliament called on the Kurdish parties from Iran in February.

The meeting included the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDK-I), all three factions of Komala, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP Iran), and Khabat.

“All parties agreed that this is an Iranian plan. Iranian regime wants to weaken the Kurdish movement. After the meeting all parties created a commission to meet with Iraq’s Parliament factions,” said Aso Saleh, PDK-I representative in Sweden.

Tensions have increased between Iranian Kurdish parties and the Iranian regime since the former decided to resume their armed struggle last year. Iran has accused Saudi Arabia of funding and arming the Kurdish parties, something, which the parties have denied.

The parties are principally seeking an autonomous Kurdish government in Iran, analogous to the KRG in Iraq.

Iran retaliated by bombing the PDK-I offices near Erbil in the town of Koy Sanjaq on 26 December, 2016, killing at least six. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) condemned the attacks.

The Iranian Kurds have called upon the new Trump administration to designate the IRGC as a terrorist group.

The long ignored Iranian Kurds have been suppressed for decades with Iran allowing minimal cultural rights and hundreds of Kurds executed for political activities.

    Afghanistan
13 ISIS Bad Guys have a Very Bad Day in Nangarhar
At least thirty militants affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group were killed in separate airstrikes in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The 201st Silab Corps of the Afghan National Army (ANA) forces in East of Afghanistan said the militants were killed in Achin district and Deh Bala area.

The source further added that three of the militants were killed in Achin district while the remaining ten were killed in Deh Bala.

The provincial police commandment confirmed that the airstrike in Achin district was carried out by the US force based in Afghanistan.

The Afghan security forces and the local residents did not suffer any casualties during the operation, the source said.

This comes as both the Afghan and US forces conducted regular strikes against the loyalists of the terror group in this province.
The increased raids, usually involving drone strikes, by the US forces followed a broader role granted by the Obama administration earlier last year.

The broader role was granted amid concerns that the loyalists of the terror group are attempting to expand foothold in the country and turn the eastern Nangarhar province into a regional operational hub for its fighters.

    Arabia
Iran pilgrims to join this year's Haj
Iranian pilgrims will participate in this year's annual Haj, Saudi Arabia said on Friday, despite ruptured ties between the two nations. For the first time in nearly three decades Iran's pilgrims - which would have numbered about 60,000 - did not attend last year's Haj after Riyadh and Tehran failed to agree on security and logistics.

Tensions remain as Saudi Arabia repeatedly accuses Iran of fuelling conflicts by supporting armed movements in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Bahrain. But after talks between the two sides, the Iranians will join this year's ritual which takes place at the beginning of September.

"The ministry of Haj and the Iranian organisation have completed all the necessary measures to ensure Iranian pilgrims perform Haj 1438 according to the procedures followed by all Muslim countries," the official Saudi Press Agency said, referring to this year in the Islamic calendar.

The Haj ministry said that the kingdom, home to Islam's holiest sites, welcomes "all pilgrims from all the different nationalities and backgrounds".

Although the verbal sparring continued, Saudi media reported in December that the Saudi minister in charge of pilgrimages, Mohammed Bentin, had invited Iran to discuss arrangements for this year's Haj.

An Iranian delegation visited Saudi Arabia in February for talks with Bentin. In early March, Iran said there had been progress.

"Most of the questions up for discussion have been resolved and a couple of issues are remaining," Iran's ISNA news agency quoted Ali Ghazi Askar, the Iranian supreme leader's representative for Haj affairs, as saying. "If those questions are resolved, we hope pilgrims will soon be sent to Saudi Arabia."

A major issue was compensation for the families of hundreds of people killed in a stampede during the 2015 Haj. Iran says 464 of its citizens died in the disaster.

More than 1.8 million faithful took part in last year's Haj. The pilgrimage is one of the five pillars of Islam and all Muslims who can must perform it at least once in their lives.

Iranian pilgrims have for the past two years not attended the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah and Madinah in western Saudi Arabia, known as umrah, which occurs outside Haj. Tehran suspended its umrah participation over the assault of two Iranian teenage boy pilgrims by Saudi police at Jeddah airport in early 2015.

Ghazi Askar said Iran had raised this issue as well, and if the culprits were punished, "the lesser Haj will also be restored".

Attacks on RAB isolated incidents: DMP Commissioner
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzamman Mian on Saturday said the attacks targeting members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in city's Ashkona and Khilgaon are isolated incidents.

"We have nothing to be panicked over these isolated attacks on RAB. The members of law enforcement agencies are alert to save lives of the people," he told a function at Sultana Kamal Mohila Complex in the city.
The RAB certainly doesn't appear to be panicked...
Asaduzzaman said, "Law and order situation is good compared to that in any time in the past. Members of law enforcement agencies are successfully working to check the ill activities of terrorists."

He said homegrown militants have been carrying out terrorist activities in the country but they could not spread due to zero tolerance policy of the government against militancy.

Referring to government's stern actions against militancy and terrorism, the DMP Commissioner said a vested quarter is misinterpreting religion to fish in troubled water.

Ruling out the presence of Islamic State (IS) in the country, he firmly said there was no evidence and existence of this militant outfit in the country.
Just a bunch of neo-JMB boys who have pledged themselves to IS...

    Southeast Asia
23 Moro militants killed in three-day assault
[Inquirer] The Philippine military said air and ground assaults on hideouts of Moro militants suspected of providing shelter to terrorists had killed at least 21 militants and injured 26 others. The offensives took place from March 13 to 16.

Abu Misry Mama, spokesperson for the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, said the attacks only led to displacement of villagers. He said, "The bombs only hit trees and the marshland. We were not there when the bombings occurred. We are not affected, only the civilians were displaced."

"We are still here," Mama said, denying that the BIFF was providing shelter to terrorists.

Early Saturday morning, five weapons were recovered following a brief clash between troops and the BIFF in Raja Buayan, Maguindanao. Military spokesman John Encinas said soldiers also found manuals for bomb-making that indicated the presence of terrorists in the area.

The militants and their trainees were allegedly targeting power lines and other civilian installations in Mindanao. Encinas said the group that the soldiers encountered in Raja Buayan was among those trained by slain international terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, who was killed in Maguindanao, in January 2015.

The group with links to Marwan has been training local rebels, including members of the Maute Group, to make bombs. Test missions include bombing power pylons and public places.

LNA accused of war crimes in Ganfouda
    The caravan moves on
The exhumation and apparent mutilation of the corpse of Islamist leader Jamal Makhzoum has been condemned as an “heinous” war crime by the Libyan Nation Commission for Human Rights (LNCHR).

In a widely-shared social media video, the clearly-decomposing body of Makhzoum is shown strapped to the front of a car, kicked and then paraded by Libyan National Army (LNA) fighters. In an act of celebration they also shoot their guns in the air.

The LNA is accused of committing a war crime by the LNCHR, who described the incident as a “despicable and heinous crime incompatible with human values.”

Article 15 of the first 1949 Geneva Convention states parties to conflict when dealing with dead bodies must “prevent their being despoiled.” The LNCHR argued it was a “flagrant violation of the rules of law and international humanitarian law.”
To be sure, the Geneva Conventions are only binding on those nations that have signed off on them, and no one else. No one else encompasses quite a few extant nations and all sub-national groups, though it is a lovely standard to aspire to when your opponents are equally civilized.
It's also a useful distraction when you're getting your ass kicked...
In other photographs, dead militants can be seen thrown on top of each other, sprawled across the ground. LNA fighters also pose with the bodies and take ‘selfies.’

The Benghazi Revolutionaries Shura Council (BRSC) announced this week that Makhzoum, their former leader, had been killed in Ganfouda.

LNA spokesman Ahmed Mismari said yesterday they had found a mass grave of Islamist militants, including Ansar Al-Sharia commanders and the corpse of Makhzoum. Mismari said the Red Crescent was going to be recovering the other bodies.

Many social media users have said how disgusting the footage is. Some compare the behaviour of the soldiers to that of the so-called Islamist State. Images of hanged and mutilated corpses from the Qaddafi era have also been shared.

There has in addition been condemnation of the silence thus far of international diplomats.

The LNCHR called on the Benghazi attorney-general and the House of Representatives to open an investigation immediately.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood-linked Justice and Construction Party deplored the incident and in its turn called on human rights organisations to investigate.
No doubt. But that's because they aren't holding the winning hand there.

5 killed in raid at Chittagong Neo JMB militant den
Law enforcers found the body of a child at “Neo JMB” hideout in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong this evening, raising death toll from the raid by joint forces to five.

Four bodies of suspected militants including a woman were recovered from the hideout in Premtala area earlier in the day, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting police. The suspected four militants were killed in sporadic gunfight with the joint forces since the morning. Some lawmen were also injured at that time.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Meanwhile, 20 members of seven families, who were trapped inside the building during the overnight raid, were taken to safety before the final assault began around 6:00am this morning.

Four hours after the drive, Chittagong range Deputy Inspector General of Police Shafiqul Islam told the media that the drive codenamed “Assault 16” had ended and confirmed the death of four suspected militants.

Later, police found the child’s body lying inside the flat used as the den of the terrorist outfit, said Habibur Rahman, additional superintendent of police in Chittagong. The identity and age of the child could not be known immediately.

    ‘Neo JMB’

“Neo JMB”, as law enforcers call it, is an offshoot of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). Its coordinator Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury -- killed along with his two accomplices in an operation at a militant den in Narayanganj on August 27, 2016, -- was thought to be the Gulshan attack mastermind.

The “Neo JMB”, formed by leaders and operatives of mainstream JMB who did not accept the leadership of Saidur Rahman, follows the ideology of Islamic State (IS). Apart from Gulshan attack, the gang ensured ingredients for improvised grenades that were used in all attacks perpetrated by “Neo JMB” in recent years, police said.

    Europe
French Investigators Probe Motives of Orly Airport Attacker
Latest on this story from yesterday.
[AnNahar] French Sherlocks were on Sunday trying to establish whether the man rubbed out after holding up a soldier at Orly airport in Gay Paree had planned the attack or acted on impulse.

Saturday's assault by 39-year-old Ziyed Ben Belgacem caused a major security scare, leading to the temporary closure of the capital's second-busiest airport and the cancellation of dozens of flights.

By Sunday morning the situation had nearly returned to normal.

Ben Belgacem, who was born in La Belle France to Tunisian parents, said he wanted to "die for Allah" and that others too would die after grabbing a female soldier, putting a gun to her head and seizing her rifle.

The attack comes with La Belle France still on high alert following a series of jihadist attacks that have claimed more than 230 lives in two years.

Security is one of the key issues in La Belle France's two-round presidential election on April 23 and May 7.

Ben Belgacem's father insisted the assailant -- who had spent time in prison for drugs and armed robbery and been investigated for links to radical Islam -- was "not a terrorist" and was acting under the influence of drink and drugs.

The father was released from custody late Saturday after being questioned.

Investigators were continuing to quiz Ben Belgacem's brother and cousin for clues as to whether the gunman had planned a terror attack or whether the airport attack was the unhinged epilogue to a shooting spree.

    - 'Drink and cannabis to blame' -
"My son was not a terrorist. He never prayed and he drank," his father, whose first name was not given, told Europe 1 radio, blaming "drink and cannabis" for his son's actions.

An autopsy was to to be carried out on Ben Belgacem's body Sunday to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Gay Paree prosecutor Francois Molins said he appeared to have become caught up in a "sort of headlong flight that became more and more destructive."

The shooting took place on the second day of a visit to Gay Paree by Britannia's Prince William and his wife Kate, which was unaffected.

Ben Belgacem's standoff with the security forces began at around 6.30 am (0530 GMT) in the gritty northern Gay Paree suburb of Garges-les-Gonesse, where he lived.

After spending the night in a bar, he was pulled over by police for speeding. Ben Belgacem drew a gun and fired at the police, slightly injuring one officer.

    - 'I've screwed up' -
His father told Europe 1 his son phoned him shortly after the confrontation "in a state of extreme agitation".

"He said to me: 'Daddy, please forgive me. I've screwed up with a police officer'."

Ben Belgacem then drove to Orly airport, stopping off first in a bar where he had been drinking hours earlier and firing more shots and then stealing another car.

On the departures floor of the airport, he grabbed a soldier patrolling with two colleagues under the Sentinelle anti-terror operation that has mobilized thousands of troops since January 2015.

Gay Paree prosecutor Francois Molins said Ben Belgacem threatened the three, ordering them to surrender.

"I'm here to die for Allah. In any case, people are going to die," Molins quoted him as saying.

He tried to use the soldier as a human shield but her colleagues managed to shoot him as they scuffled.

Ben Belgacem was carrying a petrol can in a backpack as well as a copy of the Koran, Molins said. He was investigated in 2015 over his suspected links to Islamist bandidos snuffies but his name did not feature on the list of those thought to pose a high risk.

A small amount of cocaine and a machete were found during a search of his home on Saturday.

A front man for the Gay Paree airport authority said Sunday that the backlog of travelers stranded by the chaos had been cleared and that passengers were experiencing only "slight delays."

Soldiers guarding key sites have been targeted in four attacks in the past two years that have caused only minor injuries.

In mid-February, a machete-wielding Egyptian man attacked a soldier outside Gay Paree's Louvre museum, injuring him slightly, before being shot and maimed.

    French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
said Saturday his government was "determined to fight relentlessly against terrorism, defend the security of our compatriots and ensure the protection of our country."
    Ynet adds:
Ben Belgacem did not appear in a French government database of people considered potential threats to national security. But prosecutors said he had already crossed authorities' radar for suspected Islamic extremism.

His house was among scores searched in November 2015 in the immediate aftermath of suicide bomb-and-gun attacks that killed 130 people in Gay Paree. Those searches targeted people with suspected radical leanings.

Yemeni missile hits Soddy airbase in Riyadh
Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters and their allies in the army have fired a long-range ballistic missile at an airbase in the Saudi capital Riyadh, marking the second such attack on the city, a report says.

The missile of Borkan-2 type accurately struck King Salman Air Base on Saturday, Arabic-language al-Masirah television network reported.

In a statement carried by Yemen’s official Saba news agency, a Houthi military official said the missile attack came in retaliation for the criminal Saudi war on Yemen.

Meanwhile, the Yemeni army pledged that missiles would target the Saudi territory until the regime’s bombing campaign stops.

It further announced that 108 ballistic missiles have been fired at positions held by Saudi invaders inside and outside Yemen so far.

Separately on Saturday, Yemeni fighters targeted with a Zelzal-1 missile a gathering place of Saudi mercenaries in the al-Ramzah district in the kingdom’s southwestern Jizan region.

They also launched a missile attack against positions held by the mercenaries in al-Maton district of Yemen’s northern Jawf province.

    Iraq
    Mosul Offensive News

Iraqi forces capture 2 central Mosul sectors

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi security forces moved deeper inside central Mosul on Sunday, recapturing two neighborhoods while killing and arresting several Islamic State militants.

A security source was quoted by Skypress saying the forces took full control of Khaled ibn al-Walid and Bab al-Sijn neighborhoods near central Mosul’s Old City, opening safe exit routes for civilians. The troops moved on to al-Matahen (mills) area, killing 17 militants, including two suicide bombers, according to the agency.

Also near the Old City, Borhan al-Abdali, a lieutenant at the army’s Counter-Terrorism Force, told Anadolu Agency his forces retook Fatah al-Ali, an alleyway in the nearby Mosul al-Jadida district, killing 14 militants after two hours of intense fighting. Abdali quoted civilians reporting of many militants throwing their weapons and escaping to nearby alleyways.

Iraqi Federal Police chief said Sunday his forces arrested a senior Islamic State leader in western Mosul, while Kurdish Peshmerga forces said they killed others.

Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat said police arrested Hossam Shiit al-Jubouri, the official in charge of the extremist group’s hisbah (vigilantism) office in western Mosul’s Bab al-Sijn district.

The IS body had acted as a disciplinary police force, arresting violators of the group’s extremist rule. Many of its offices reportedly closed upon the launch of Iraqi government operations to retake western Mosul mid February.

In the town of Tal Afar, west of Mosul, Kurdish Peshmerga forces also said they killed a senior Islamic State leader, identified as Taha Gawish, and an unidentified number of his aides, in an artillery shelling at Baki Quot village near the strategic town.

his forces were very close to the Grand Nuri Mosque in Old Mosul, another primary target for Iraqi security forces seeking to eradicate IS from western Mosul since February.

“Federal Police troops have become very close to liberating al-Hadbaa Minaret, the second most important strategic target in western Mosul after the liberated government buildings,” Jawdat said, using the Arabic common reference to the mosque’s “leaning” minaret.

The Nuri Mosque was the location where IS supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi delivered his famous sermon in 2014 to declare the establishment of a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq, appointing himself as a Caliph “ruler” of the proclaimed state.

Jawdat added that his forces, advancing towards the mosque, killed tens of militants and destroyed 23 booby-trapped vehicles.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul from IS in January after three months of fighting.

Government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition have made remarkable achievements since February, retaking main government buildings, the city’s airport and a major military base. The troops have recently pushed deeper into the Old City, a densely-populated and -structured area which military officials view as central to the desired victory over IS militants.

17 ISIS Baddies die in western Mosul attack

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A Federal Police Officer announced on Sunday, that 17 members of the Islamic State were killed, while trying to attack security forces in the liberated areas, west of Mosul.

Colonel Khodeir Saleh said in a press statement that security forces repulsed an attack, launched by the Islamic State group, on the liberated areas of al-Resala and Naples, west of Mosul.

The battles resulted in the killing of 17 members of the Islamic State group, including five suicide bombers, as well as arresting three foreign militants, the source added on condition of anonymity.

Noteworthy, the Islamic State is occasionally attacking the liberated areas, while security forces and al-Hashd militia manage to repulse these attacks, as well as inflicting heavy losses on the terrorist group.

Iraqi forces detain 15 ISIS suspects in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) An officer in Nineveh Operations Command revealed on Sunday, that Iraqi army forces arrested 15 members of the Islamic State group, during extensive search operations conducted in al-Qayyarah area, south of Mosul.

Major Aziz Tayeh said in a press statement that security forces carried out search and raid operations, based on accurate intelligence information, in the area of Qayyarah, south of Mosul.

The operations resulted in arresting 15 members of the Islamic State group, after raiding houses containing weapons and equipment, including dozens of missiles, rockets and adhesive explosive devices, the source added on condition of anonymity.

The source further explained that security forces transferred the detainees to the headquarters of Nineveh Operations Command for interrogation.

Donna Brazile Admits to Sharing Debate Questions With Clinton Camp, Blames Russia
[Breitbart] Former DNC chairwoman and disgraced CNN commentator Donna Brazile has admitted that she relayed confidential questions to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in advance of last year’s primary debate.

Writing in Time magazine, Brazile said she would "forever regret" the decision, which was revealed after WikiLeaks published thousands of emails belonging to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

"When I was asked last July to step in temporarily as D.N.C. Chair," Brazile explained, "I knew things were amiss. The D.N.C. had been hacked, and thousands of staff emails and documents were plastered on various websites. Staff were harassed, morale suffered, and we lost weeks of planning. Donors were harassed, and fundraising fell off."

"Then in October, a subsequent release of emails revealed that among the many things I did in my role as a Democratic operative and D.N.C. Vice Chair prior to assuming the interim D.N.C. Chair position was to share potential town hall topics with the Clinton campaign," Brazil added.

Iraqi airstrike kills 6 senior Daesh figures in Mosul
Iraqi airstrikes have killed six senior Daesh figures in Mosul, Sputnik reported.

The militants, all foreigners, included a Russian national called Abdul Karim Al Rusi who was in charge of the so called Tariq ibn Ziyad Battalion, as well as French, UK, Turkish and Moroccan nationals, the Al Sumaria channel reported, citing Iraqi intelligence sources.

Iraqi troops and pro-government militias are closing in on the remaining Daesh enclave in west Mosul months after starting the operation to liberate the city from terrorists. The eastern part of the city was liberated by the Iraqi troops, backed by the US-led international coalition, in January, with the advance on west Mosul starting in February.

    Europe
Turkey condemns Germany for permitting ‘PKK rally’
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has condemned Germany for permitting alleged outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) supporters to march in the city of Frankfurt.
We're no fans of the PKK, but suppressing a rally creates more problems than it solves...
The ministry said it was “thought-provoking” that Germany, which recognizes the PKK as a terrorist group, allowed alleged sympathizers of the group to use PKK symbols and jailed head Abdullah Öcalan’s posters during the march.
Germany has free-speech protections for those who march in a parade. Perhaps the Turkish ministry is unfamiliar with the concept...
“We condemn this insincere attitude,” the ministry said, adding that Germany’s envoy in Ankara had been informed about the discomfort regarding the issue.

German officials permitted the march on March 18 in Frankfurt to celebrate the spring holiday of Newroz, but Turkish authorities declared those marching were supporters of the PKK. The incident came just days after Turkish ministers and politicians were prevented from addressing Turkish voters in the country.

Around 9,000 people marched in the central German city of Frankfurt with banned PKK posters and flags. Marchers also carried banned posters and flags and shouted slogans against Turkey, even though the Interior Ministry on March 2 updated its list of prohibited PKK symbols to include the image of Öcalan.

In contrast, Salih Muslim, the head of Syria’s Democratic Union Party (PYD), also criticized Germany for banning Kurdish symbols during an address at the gathering.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s presidential spokesman, İbrahim Kalın, “strongly” condemned German authorities for allowing the Newroz march in the city of Frankfurt. Kalın said it was “not possible for German authorities to claim that Turkey’s elected representatives’ meeting with their citizens is dangerous as they treat terrorists as legitimate actors.”

“It is clear support for terrorism,” Kalın said. “Those, who try to explain this hostile attitude with freedom of expression and assembly should act seriously.”

In light of the march in Frankfurt, the presidential spokesperson said some European countries were “trying to interfere in the referendum that will take place on April 16 in Turkey and were favoring a ‘no’ vote.”

“We once again remind European countries that Europe will not decide in April 16; the Turkish nation will,” he added.

Another Turkish rally possible in Germany before referendum, Erdogan spokesman says

[Ynet] There is a possibility that Turkish ministers could plan another rally in Germany ahead of an April 16 referendum on changing the constitution, President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman said on Sunday, a move that could further heighten tension with Berlin.

Erdogan spokesman Ibrahim Kalin made the comment in an interview with broadcaster CNN Turk. Kalin said that "Turkophobia" was on the rise in Europe, as Ankara points out the West's mistakes, adding that Turkey remains a country friendly to international investors.

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
IDF kills Syrian pro-gov't militia commander in drone strike
[Ynet] Only several hours after Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatens to destroy Syrian air defense systems, the Israeli Air force reportedly kills a member of a pro-regime militia in a dronezap.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says Sunday that Israeli aircraft struck a vehicle driving near the town of Khan Arnabeh in the Quneitra province, on the road to Damascus, killing its driver.

The National Defense Force, a pro-regime militia formed in 2012 and organized by the Syrian government during the Syrian Civil War as a part-time volunteer reserve component of the Syrian military, claimed the man killed was from among their ranks, naming him as Yasser Hussien Assayed.

Israel has been reported to target members of that militia in the past, apparently for planning and preparing for hostile activities against it.

"The national defense force mourns with pride and sorrow the news of the martyrdom of the heroic fighter Yasser Hussien Assayed," the group said in a Facebook post.

The group published four pictures it said were from the scene of the alleged Arclight airstrike. According to the group, an Israeli drone carried out the strike.

The Paleostinian daily al Quds earlier on Sunday cited Syrian sources who said the Syrian army had targeted an Israeli drone in Quneitra, causing the drone to retreat.

The IDF refused to confirm or deny these reports.

The reported strike came hours after Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatened to destroy Syrian air defense systems, after Israeli aircraft were targeted during a bombing run early Friday morning.

"The next time the Syrians use their air defense systems against our planes we will destroy them without the slightest hesitation," Liberman said on Israel Radio.
The Times of Israel adds the following as well as photos of the erstwhile gentleman in question and his erstwhile vehicle:
The group, reportedly set up with the held of Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, published four pictures it said were from the scene of the alleged Arclight airstrike.

The Lebanese news channel NBN reported that the man killed was a Syrian air defense commander. Other reports said Assayed was a civilian.
It could be that at various times all were true. Now he is merely very sincerely dead.

    Bangladesh
Chittagong, 3 other districts have "Neo JMB" dens
Counterterrorism officials suspect that “Neo JMB” militants have built their hideouts in Cox's Bazar, Bandarban and Rangamati districts apart from Chittagong.

“The militants have set up dens in those areas as it would help their safe movement through the sea. A plan to recruit Rohingyas could be another reason,” an official of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the DMP told The Daily Star yesterday.

The official said he came to know this after quizzing Ahmed Azwad Imtiaz Talukder alias Omi, a “Neo JMB” leader in decision-making position of the outfit. Omi along with another suspected militant Mahmud Hasan was arrested on March 7 after they attacked policemen at a checkpoint in Comilla.

The capital has become very unsafe for the militants as many of their members were arrested and killed in pre-emptive operations by law enforcers, he added.

Another CTTC official, who also interrogated Omi, said the suspected militant told them that there are three dens of the terror group in Chittagong.

Chittagong police say two of the four militants killed during the operation “Assault-16” at a house named Chhayaneer in Sitakunda upazila's Premtala area on Thursday were cousins who had been missing since leaving their houses in the capital's Mirpur, reports our staff correspondent from the district.

Officials suspect that the other two -- a man and a woman -- are sister and brother-in-law of suspected militant Jasim alias Jahirul Islam, who was arrested with his wife Arjina from another militant den, in Amirabad area of the same upazila, on Wednesday. When the couple were shown photos of the two cousins, they said the duo looked like the youths who went out of the Amirabad house with a laptop just before police came on Wednesday, said a CTTC official.

Asked why his sister Jobaida and brother-in-law Kamal attempted to “blow themselves up”, Jasim told the official that they have instruction that if law enforcers raid their home, “they will have to turn it into a graveyard”.

Meanwhile, the family, which caught Jasim and his wife on Wednesday with the help of friends and contacted police, has raised security concern. Police said if the family members ask for security, they will arrange it.

The Daily Star earlier had learnt that the two cousins had been missing since they left unannounced their Purbo Monipur houses in Mirpur on August 9 last year. Talking to this newspaper at that time, the family members and relatives feared the two might have been brainwashed into taking the path of militancy.

Ahmed Rafid al Hasan, 20, and Aiad Hasan, 21, grew up in the same neighbourhood and were very close, another cousin said. Rafid lived on the fourth-floor apartment of a six-storey building and Aiad in another flat about 200 yards away.

Rafid, son of Taufiq Hasan and Nilufar Yasmin, and Aiad, son of late Ali Hasan and Munmun Ahmed, completed A-level from reputed English medium schools in the capital. Both are well-off families.

Yesterday, during a media briefing at the district police headquarters, Chittagong SP Noor E Alam Mina said, “We have got primary identities of the [four] militants. But we cannot confirm it before DNA tests and other examinations.”

The SP assumed that the militant woman killed in the operation was the mother of the child who was found dead at Chhayaneer.

During Thursday's raid, when the SWAT members were on the roof of the Chhayaneer house, three militants moved towards them using the staircase with grenades in their hands. A fourth militant, a woman wearing a “suicide vest”, was right behind the three.

The SWAT members from behind their shields opened fire. Shouting “Allahu Akbar”, the three suspects tried to hurl the grenades at the SWAT personnel but those exploded near them and tore their bodies apart. The explosions also left two SWAT personnel injured.

The woman died after being shot. She fell to the ground before she could blow herself up.

The bodies were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for autopsy.

Fighting between competing tribes leaves 4 dead in Faryab
At least four people were killed during a clash between the irresponsible gunmen of Jamiat-e-Islami and Junbish-e-Millie in North of Afghanistan.

According to the local government officials in Faryab, the incident took place late on Saturday afternoon in Maimana city, the provincial capital of the province.

Provincial police spokesman Abdul Karim Yurish confirmed the incident and said at least ten people were also wounded during the clash.

He said a number of the police forces are also among those wounded during the clash.

Yurish further added that the clashes ended with the meddling of the local tribal elders and the situation is under the control at the moment

He also added that an investigation will be launched soon regarding the incident and those involved in the clashes will be introduced to the relevant security and judicial institutions.

This is not the first time clashes have taken place between the two parties as several incidents reported from the northern parts of the country, specifically the Faryab province last year.

The Junbish-e-Millie Party is led by the Second Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum while Jamiat-e-Islami is led mainly by the former northern alliance leaders, including Ata Mohammad Noor.

Syrian regulars gain control of regions near Palmyra
Syrian Army units regained control over the mountains chain north of al-Mazar Mountains in the northern countryside of Palmyra in eastern Homs after destroying the latest ISIL fortifications in it, SANA reported.

A military source told SANA Sunday that the army continued advance towards ISIL posts east and north of Palmyra city and established control over the mountains chain, about 30km north of the mountains of al-Mazar and al-Haram.

Later, army units, in cooperation with allied forces, established control over the chain of Talila Heights, 20 km southeast of Palmyra.

An army unit destroyed a large ammunition depot for al-Nusra terrorists in Deir Foul in the northern countryside of Homs.

Syria Dismisses Media Lies on Damascus

In Damascus, Syrian ground forces and warplanes have repelled a multi-pronged attack by the Takfiri terror group Al-Nusra front (now known as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham) in Damascus’ countryside.

The terrorists and their allies started advancing from the Eastern Ghouta District near the capital early Sunday. Government forces engaged them in the suburban Jobar District later in the day.

The military killed and injured a number of the Takfiris, destroyed two of the attackers’ explosives-laden vehicles, and stopped them as they tried to make an inroad into the district through underground tunnels.

Jobar separates Eastern Ghouta, which holds large Takfiri concentrations, from Damascus proper.

Meanwhile, SANA reporter denied media reports claiming that the terrorist organizations have taken over al-Abbassiyeen bus station area, northeast of Damascus city.

“All rumors and lies circulated by media outlets which are involved in the shedding of the Syrians’ blood about terrorist organizations having taken control over al-Abbassiyeen bus station area are untrue,” the reporter stressed.

    Europe
Germany rejects Trump claim it owes Nato and US 'vast sums' for defence
The German defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, on Sunday rejected Donald Trump’s claim that Germany owes Nato and the US “vast sums” of money for defence.

“There is no debt account at Nato,” Von der Leyen said in a statement, adding that it was wrong to link the alliance’s target for members to spend 2% of their economic output on defence by 2024 solely to Nato.

“Defence spending also goes into UN peacekeeping missions, into our European missions and into our contribution to the fight against [Isis] terrorism,” Von der Leyen said.
Umm, no, to borrow a line, "that's not how it works." Your NATO commitment is the baseline, and you add spending for other defense on top of that, just as we do.
Trump, who was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, said on Twitter on Saturday – a day after meeting the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, in Washington – that Germany “owes vast sums of money to Nato & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”

His words prompted criticism, also published on Twitter, from a former permanent representative to Nato under President Obama. Ivo Daalder, permanent representative from 2009 to 2013, wrote: “Sorry, Mr President, that’s not how Nato works. The US decides for itself how much it contributes to defending Nato. This is not a financial transaction, where Nato countries pay the US to defend them. It is part of our treaty commitment."
The same treaty to which the other members pledge, and to which they pledged to meet certain minimums. Which many of them aren't doing. But if Ivo is correct in that the US can decide for itself how much to contribute to NATO, great -- let's contribute LESS and see how it goes...
Trump has urged Germany and other Nato members to accelerate efforts to meet Nato’s defence spending target.

Von der Leyen said everyone wanted the burden to be shared fairly
    ...meaning, mostly by Uncle Sugar...
and for that to happen it was necessary to have a “modern security concept” that included a modern Nato but also a European defence union and investment in the United Nations.
Which is all soft, easily hidden spending that can be inflated to look good...
German defence spending is set to rise by €1.4bn ($1.5bn) to €38.5bn ($41.4bn) in 2018 – a figure that is projected to represent 1.26% of economic output, the finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, has said. In 2016, Germany’s defence spending ratio stood at 1.18%.
Meanwhile, Britain, France and the UK are shipping troops to the Baltic states...
During her trip to Washington, Merkel reiterated Germany’s commitment to the 2% military spending goal.
When, Frau Chancellor? Perhaps in your lifetime?

We also could use a bunch of food and medical supplies in the refugee camps in Jordan. Please put together monthly $100M euro care packages and drop them off at Ramstein. We'll handle the delivery, and

Oh, and you're kind of being mean to our NATO buddy Greece. Knock that off. It is messing up their defense budget.
