#2 I don't understand merely showing weapons instead of firing on them. They were obviously pirates, rather than fishermen. The tactic of showing weapons merely lets them get away to attack a less well defended vessel next time.

There's usually a "policy of escalation" involved, imposed by the shipping company. Some only permit non-lethal measures.

And - g(r)om's usual histrionics aside, can you imaging the outcry if Israeli security guards did open fire on Somalis?
