#2 Either a lot of people are going to start dropping dead in a hurry, or it is mass hysteria. Even if it was another disease, it is unlikely it would spread so quickly.

Ironically, the spread of this 'fever' tracks about the same as Avian flu would spread. At this point, the next outbreak would be in the tens of thousands.

#3 Personally I hope the big bird flu epidemic will be delayed long enough for John Ringo's _Centurion_ (which has bird flu, among other things, as background plot elements) to come out.

#6 Isn't this the norm for the African areas?
Periodic overpopulation, followed by plague? Repeat forever?

#7 1. No deaths.
2. No positives on H5N1.
3. Symptom profile limited to fever -- no conjunctivitis, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, nausea, vomiting or neurologic changes.
4. Atypical spread from human to human.

This could be a lot of things, but avian flu isn't a good candidate yet.

2,324 is a lot of fevers, but the district has over three million people. It could just be that fevers not normally reported are now getting reported out of extreme caution.
