#3 IIRC, in WWII when the Brits were fighting Rommel in North Africa Winston Churchill called it pecking at the periphery because they weren't going directly after Hitler in Berlin. Back then it was probably the thing to do because the oil was important and the Brits didn't really have the wherewithal to challenge the Germans in Europe.

These days I would call Pencilneck a peripheral character who defers to the real problem in Qom. But the Iranians aren't exactly the Third Reich and Syria has no oil. So why bother with Pencilneck, Senator?

We DO NOT want to get involved in this. There are no clear "good guys" in Syria: just a lot of bad guys, weird religious minorities, and a Sunni majority "revolution" poised to devolve into genocide at the drop of a hat.

OTOH it's possible when all is said and done that Israel might be able to pickup a couple million perfectly good Druze and Christians to settle on their (suddenly expanded) northern boarder. Who knows: maybe some disaffected Ishmaili as well.
