#2 Curtis’s captors with Jabhat al-Nusra have been at war with the Islamic State, which holds three other U.S. hostages, for control of parts of Syria in recent months. The whereabouts of a fourth American hostage, journalist Austin Tice, are not known, but he is not believed to be with the Islamic State, U.S. officials say.

The Al-Nusrah are what the regine might refer to as 'moderate' mooslim murderers, but that does not mean money, promises of not being targeted by air strikes, or promises of GITMO releases were not bartered. Professional courtesy possibly, but I somehow doubt guilt or altruism were in play here.
