#3 I think there's a canal system that connects the Caspian to the Black Sea, but it's entirely within Russia.

#4 Yes. Apparently Russia (who also has a sizable naval presence there) and Iran have decided the Caspian would be home-turf.

Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have pipelines in planning. Apparently that's a no-no, for the Russians at least.

#5 This is the only place on the entire Iranian Caspian coast that could build anything larger than a rowboat. I just mailed a copy of the photo to Fred.
