#1 Long article on how the modern Red Flag works and how the numbers may or may not be as teh awesome as the original article implied.

Still doesn't seem like a bad showing for the F-35 so... yay?

#2 30 years ago I would not have been nearly as skeptical of this kind of story. However, in the course of the last decade or so I've shot right past skeptical into deeply cynical territory.

Lies, damn lies and statistics, or something like that.

#3 OK, do we accept the notion that the Air Force is willing to lie about this in order to get their way? (Kind of like the Navy and LCS?)

#4 I don't think the military would lie. I do think they're as susceptible to "group think" as any other organization.

#5 When you have the Air Force general in charge of F35 project coordination recorded saying that 'any officer who is not willing to do anything necessary to secure funding is a traitor and should resign' (and he used those words), I don't think lie is too strong a word.

#6 After one stint consulting at Naval Air about their new logistics system I feel confident in saying that at the top levels the distinction between political and military gets very very hazy.

#7 If I read the article correctly, Red Flag is mainly set up so the Killer Turkey is shooting fishes in a barrel! The trick here is getting the fishes to stay still long enough to be shot.

So Red Flag is basically meaningless. F-111 anyone?

#8 Given our current SecDef, I wonder how many USAF generals are willing to jeopardize their career by falsifying how well the F-35 did. SecDef Mattis doesn't strike me as someone easily fooled and isn't likely to tolerate generals (of any branch) lying to him or pushing an agenda contrary to the best interests of the US Military.
