This has always intrigued me. After a successful revolution, it's pretty much SOP to do everything necessary to make sure no one comes along and overthrows *you*. These guys did the exact opposite.

Many were members of the Society of the Cincinnati, and viewed politics as a temporarily necessary duty to be laid down as soon as possible in favour of returning to their real work. They loathed professional politicians
