The short version: The entire National Command Authority - the President, the National Security Advisors, the SecDef, and the service chiefs - knowingly and willfully betrayed their country and its armed forces in Vietnam.

#8 We say that Germany drew the wrong lesson from World War III — not about genocide but about national self defence — but those generals drew a wrong lesson from that war as well. I understand that they did not want to precipitate nuclear war with the Soviet Union, but this was not the way to accomplish it.
