#3 back in the 13th century, a famous Rabbi, Meir of Rothenburg, a.k.a. the Maharam was taken prisoner and imprisoned by the authorities in a fortress in Alcase. The governor of the fortress let it be known that the Rabbi would be released for a large ransom. The Rabbi wrote a treatise forbidding paying the ransom as it would create an incentive to kidnap more Jews. The Rabbi died in prison but before doing so wrote another treatise forbidding excessive ransom for his body. After a number of years his body was ransomed for a modest ransom. His grave is in Worms. The man who ransomed the Rabbi is buried next to him.

#4 I've visited both graves in Worms. Btw at the corner of Galgengasse and Judengasse in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, there is a private museum that presents the history of the medieval Jewish community and Rabbi Meir ben Baruch.

And a little correction: The ransom for the body was not "modest". It was not until 1307 that Meir's body could be redeemed by the Frankfurt merchant Alexander ben Salomon Wimpfen, who sacrificed his entire fortune to pay more than 20,000 pounds of silver. He himself transported the body to Worms, where, in accordance with Meir's wishes, it was buried in the Jewish cemetery, Heiliger Sand, on September 8, 1307. Alexander ben Salomon Wimpfen, who died in the same year, 1307, was buried next to him.
