Russia will lose the war against Ukraine. Here's why - opinion
[Jerusalem Post] When Vladimir Putin decided to start rebuilding the Soviet Union by conquering Ukraine, he didn’t realize that Russia’s industrial base was too weak to support his military adventures. As his promises of international greatness clash with reality on the battlefield, he faces discontent and accusations of defeatism and, worse, treason.

One thing Russia has always been good at is amassing territory. Someone calculated that between around 1450, when the Grand Duchy of Muscovy came into its own, and the demise of the Russian Empire in 1917, it expanded at the average rate of three square kilometers per hour.

World War I brought an end to the empire. Lenin denounced Russian imperialism, declaring the principle of national self-determination. Some nations on the western edge of the empire broke loose, but the Red Army brought Ukraine, Transcaucasus and Central Asia back into the fold. The Bolsheviks married Russia’s expansionist drive to their millenarian ideology, developing a version of the land grab based on a supposedly scientific claim of the inevitable worldwide triumph of communism.

The task of spreading communism by the bayonet — and keeping it there — required a large war machine, which in turn required a powerful industrial base. Stalin’s industrialization thus gave absolution priority to military production. During the 1930s, and before Hitler’s rearmament gained momentum, the Soviet Union produced more tanks than the rest of the world combined.

The Soviet military got the best equipment and manpower, as well as advanced technology and science. Military jobs paid well and attracted the best graduates. Some 15-20% of Soviet GDP was devoted to the military-industrial complex, and the true share was probably higher since some civilian production also served the needs of the Defense Ministry and its agencies.

#3  ^knowing many years of Russian history, I can say whoever replaces Putin could be much worse or should I say more strident. Day by day we will see massive pressure placed upon Ukraine and western peoples intent on war with Russia. The west shoots off their guns and they shoot their own foot. They manage this like Ukraine is a blue managed state.

#6  Russia has already lost. It bungled its original war goals and is still bungling the new short term war goals. The real question is how much will Russia lose by?

A Ukrainian "win" would be getting all their original land, including Crimea back, but I seriously doubt that will happen. More than likely Ukraine will get something in a cease fire after another humiliating Russian retreat. And then in a few years another war will kick off.

#8  Democrats cash cow must be protected at all costs. Autumn rains soon and Ukraine has equipment ill suited in such conditions. So the West has adopted a long term money pit as we did with Afghanistan. Ukrainian economy is a wreck and so ongoing money appeals. Manufactures will not be to keen to supply equipment when it is shone to be poorly performing. Diplomatic efforts of the West have only served to escalate tension and isolate Russia. So "If Russia stops fighting, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends." Such enlightened words of Blinken.

#11  Until Russia's main concern is addressed, the encroachment of NATO into eastern Europe, and the lies that allowed it to happen, no ceasefire or negotiation will suffice to bring peace.

You're delusional if you think Russia will accept a ceasefire for any reason other than to reload, until those concerns are met.

The west has to do the one thing it has refused to do: negotiate with Russia.

The war continues on.
Posted by: badanov || 09/23/2022 15:20 Comments || Top||

#12  ^Ditto that. The West offers the stick when it would have been much more reasonable to offer something more agreeable as a carrot. So it seems diplomacy has passed. Eight years of NATO encroachment tolerated by Russia until now. With current environment Russia reaction is bring it on. Russia proceeds with referendums. When the vote goes for Russia. Any attack on these areas will be treated as an attack on Russia.

#14  Dale, I'm no fan of the Democrats, but they're not the ones who started this war. Putin did.

Stop trying to shift the blame. It just makes you look stupid.

I think it was Democrats in the State Department who made themselves look aggressive and stupid when they engineered the Maidan Coup. How can they say Putin is the aggressor and ignore that? How can they say Putin is the aggressor while insisting that NATO expand into Ukraine? And exactly what are the Biden family interests in that country?

How long has Putin been in power and exactly why did he wait until just last February to start this particular war? You think there is no possibility that Biden had something to do with it?

Yes, Putin is losing. Russia's military/industrial complex is no match for America's. But does that mean we should kick his ass just because we can? Does that mean we shouldn't bother attempting to negotiate a peaceful solution because we're winning?

You push that guy until his back is against the wall and then you act all butt hurt when he fights back.

But my question is: Where and when will it stop?

I heard somebody say it will stop at the border but those borders have been in flux for over a thousand years. Exactly, what border? You gonna risk nuclear war for the Donbass? For Crimea which was never a part of Ukraine until ethnic Ukrainian Nikita Khrushchev drew a line on a map in 1956 when it was all the Soviet Union anyway? Same thing with all of Ukraine, technically. Until the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine itself was never independent, always either a part of the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union.

Where and when does it stop, Rob?

#15  I think it was Woodrow Wilson who first advanced the principal of self-determination, mean the people on the ground should be allowed to determine which nation should rule the territory where they live.

I think most Ukrainians would vote to be independent of Russia because of all the animosity between Ukrainians and Russians going way, way back into history.

But what about Donbass and Crimea? Did anybody ask the people who live there?

Just today Fox News was claiming that Putin's current referendum in Donbass asking the people exactly that question is a sham. But Fox News always tells us that Trump's claims of fraud in the 2020 election are false. How do they know? Do they have poll watchers in Donbass?

Finally, how would you feel if Xi Jinping deployed his troops on our border?

#17  Ukraine itself was never independent, always either a part of the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union.

Parts of the Ukraine have also been in the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires, as well as being ruled by the Golden Horde. In more recent times it was semi-independent at part of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth; also known as the Polish-Lithuanian-Ruthenian Commonwealth. So it's history is a bit more complex than that.

Russian Nukes Can Be Used To Defend Annexed Ukraine Regions, Kremlin Warns
[ZERO] Once again Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has served the role of issuing more severe 'read between the lines' warnings and threats fresh off President Vladimir Putin's Wednesday speech announcing partial mobilization of national forces and which confirmed referendums of occupied portions of Ukraine to join the Russian Federation.

Putin's most alarming line came when he said, "If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people," following with "It’s not a bluff." He had also stressed Moscow is ready to use "all available" means to protect its "territorial integrity".

Medvedev has taken the president's words further in Thursday statements, stressing that regarding Russian-seized territory and the move to vote in several areas - including the LPR, DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions - "there is no going back" and that even a 'nuclear option' could be on the table.

"The Donbas [Donetsk and Luhansk] republics and other territories will be accepted into Russia," he posted to Telegram. That's when the former president and top national security official doubled down on Putin's nuclear warning, stating:
Russia has announced that not only mobilization capabilities, but also any Russian weapons, including strategic nuclear weapons and weapons based on new principles, could be used for such protection.

Putin and Medvedev's statements mark the first time any top Russian officials have affirmed readiness to bring newly acquired Russian territories under Moscow's nuclear doctrine.

However, it remains that Russian forces do not yet control 100% of any of the four main territories where annexation votes are to be held - with some referendums set for early as this weekend according to prior reports.

To review of the past 48 hours of Kremlin decision-making which is poised to escalate this war even further, here is the logical course of what just got enacted in the call-up of some 300,000 reservists:

New U.S. Sanctions Target Russian Financial Officials, Chechen Leader's Wives, Daughters
From a week ago, but still interesting.
[RFERL] The U.S. Treasury Department on September 15 added top Russian finance officials, relatives of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, and a Russian children's rights official who allegedly directs the removal of Ukrainian children to Russia to its sanctions blacklist.

The new sanctions target 22 individuals and two entities that the Treasury Department said advanced Moscow's objectives in Ukraine before and after Russia launched the invasion of its neighbor.

The list includes three of Kadyrov's wives and three of his adult daughters. It also places additional sanctions on the Chechen leader, who has been under U.S. sanctions since December 2017.

Kadyrov was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general for his role in Russia's war against Ukraine launched in February, the Treasury Department said, adding that Chechen units allied to Kadyrov have operated in Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv where Russia’s troops committed atrocities and destroyed homes.

"Kadyrov has recruited for Russia's war efforts through mixed martial arts clubs, which enables him and his units to continue their activity in Ukraine," the department said.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in the statement that as Ukraine "presses forward with defending its freedom," the U.S. government is "taking steps to further degrade Russia's ability to rebuild its military, hold perpetrators of violence accountable, and further financially isolate [Russian President Vladimir] Putin."

The new sanctions took aim at the heads of key Russian financial institutions, including the National Payment Card System (NSPK), which runs the Mir payment network; the National Settlement Depository; the Non-Bank Credit Organization Central Counterparty National Clearing Center (CCP NCC), which manages settlement for the Moscow stock exchange; and the Deposit Insurance Agency.

The treasury also blacklisted Maria Alexeyevna Lvova-Belova, the presidential commissioner for children's rights.

Working directly under Putin, the Treasury Department said, Lvova-Belova has overseen the deportation of "thousands" of Ukrainian children to Russia.

"Lvova-Belova's efforts specifically include the forced adoption of Ukrainian children into Russian families, the so-called 'patriotic education' of Ukrainian children, legislative changes to expedite the provision of Russian Federation citizenship to Ukrainian children, and the deliberate removal of Ukrainian children by Russia's forces," it said.

The treasury also designated Task Force Rusich, which it described as a neo-Nazi
...adherents of a philosophy that was seen even at the time as pure evil, which makes them either consciously and purely evil, or attention-seeking ratbags. Pick one, or both....
paramilitary group fighting in Ukraine, including near Kharkiv, and associated with the Vagner mercenary group controlled by close Putin associate Yevgeny Prigozhin.

"Rusich has a long history of fighting alongside Russia-backed proxies in the Donbas region of Ukraine, and in 2015, Rusich mercenaries were accused of, and filmed, committing atrocities against deceased and captured Ukrainian soldiers," the department said.

It said Rusich is led by Alexey Yurevich Milchakov and Yan Igorevich Petrovskiy.

"Milchakov, who has developed a reputation for extreme brutality, was maimed in Rusich’s initial combat near Kharkiv, Ukraine in 2022," Treasury said.

Petrovskiy, who was expelled from Norway in 2016 after being declared a threat to national security, is Rusich’s lead military trainer and replaced Milchakov as commander after his injury, the department said.

U.S. Treasury sanctions freeze any assets those designated might have under U.S. jurisdiction and forbid any U.S. individuals or companies -- including international banks with U.S. operations -- from doing business with them.

In a parallel move, the U.S. Commerce Department banned the export of quantum computing services, hardware, and software to Russia and Belarus. The Treasury Department said the move would degrade Moscow's ability to rebuild its military after heavy losses in its ongoing war in Ukraine.

All means may be used to protect Russia's 'new territories'
[DAILYSABAH] Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday said all means could be used to defend territories "incorporated" into Russia from Ukraine.

In a post on Telegram, the ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin
" ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
cited the decisions regarding partial mobilization that say, among other things, that any weapons in the Russian arsenal, including nuclear, can be used for the protection of the regions.

Putin announced on Wednesday a partial military mobilization calling up to 300,000 reservists for probable deployment to Ukraine and underlined that Russia will use all means to defend the country.

"Referendums will be held, and the Donbass republics and other territories will be admitted to Russia," he said, referring to breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine's industrial heartland.

He added that the protection of all the joined territories will be "significantly strengthened" by the Russian armed forces.

"Russia has announced that not only mobilization capabilities can be used for such protection, but also any Russian weapons, including strategic nuclear and weapons based on new principles," wrote Medvedev, who is now the deputy chairperson of Russia's Security Council.

Ukraine's self-declared republics of Luhansk and Donetsk, along with Russian-controlled parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, will hold referendums on joining Russia from Sept. 23-27, a move the international community says is illegal and would not be recognized.

22:45 In Russia, agendas for 300 thousand people were printed and signed in advance, even before the decision to mobilize appeared - Ukrainian intelligence proved this. Not only the military in the reserve, but any men," Zelensky said in an evening video message .

22:43 Zelesky said that today he held a meeting of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief: "The questions are clear. The front line. Providing for our military. And the new threats that Russia creates. I will note right away: any decisions of the Russian leadership do not change anything for Ukraine. We should be interested in only our tasks. This is the liberation of our country, the protection of our people and the mobilization of world support for the realization of our tasks."

According to the president, the entire international community is now being diplomatically mobilized: “The circle of those who support us is now not limited to our traditional partners and those who openly supported our state after February 24. Almost everyone now supports us - this is such a reaction to new Russian escalation steps In particular, the farce with the preparation of pseudo-referendums in the occupied territory demonstrates what happened in 2014 in Crimea and Donbas."

The head of state commented on the possibility of negotiations: "When Russia claims that it allegedly wants negotiations, but itself announces mobilization... When Russia knows Ukraine's clear position about the impossibility of a diplomatic process after Russia holds any pseudo-referenda... Everything is clear to everyone. Russia itself buries the prospect of negotiations with his own hands."

22:27 Zelensky, in an evening video message, commented on the Russian decision to mobilize: "This is a frank admission that their regular army, which had been trained for decades to capture someone else's, could not stand it and crumbled. And now, due to mobilization, Russia's war against Ukraine for most citizens of the Russian Federation "This is not something on TV or on the Internet, but something that has entered every Russian home. 20:34 The General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces announced that 120,000 people will be called up for military service in the fall, but "the events of the upcoming call-up have nothing to do with the conduct of a special military operation"; "There is no talk of any mobilizations, calls for full-time students studying at universities."

According to him, the goal of the occupiers is to mobilize men. Fedorov warned that a hunt for men is being prepared in the occupied territories of the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, just as it was in 2014 in the LDNR. "It is necessary now either to try to leave towards Zaporozhye, or choose an alternative route - towards Georgia through the temporarily occupied Crimea. There is little time left," Fyodorov warned.

16:22 The number of civilian casualties due to the Russian occupation of Izyum may exceed a thousand people, said Deputy Mayor Vladimir Matsokin: "Today we can say that such burials are not in one place, but at least in three ... According to analysts, the Russian Federation will try to assemble new formations with a large number of mobilized reservists, who are unlikely to be combat-ready for several months. And even this limited mobilization is likely to be extremely unpopular with part of the Russian population. Putin is taking significant political risks in the hope of building much-needed combat power, the intelligence says.

Also, the British Ministry of Defense believes that this step by Putin "is in fact a recognition that Russia has exhausted the supply of volunteers who want to fight in Ukraine."

09:18 The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believes that partial mobilization in the Russian Federation will not affect the course of the war in the coming months. At the same time, such a move exposed the many problems that Russia is facing in its hesitant invasion of Ukraine, and which Moscow is unlikely to be able to resolve in the coming months. The mobilization of part of the Russian reserve may be enough to maintain the current level of the Russian armed forces in 2023 by compensating for Russian losses, according to analysts, although this is not obvious. In addition, Russian reservists are initially poorly trained and do not undergo retraining after the expiration of the conscription period.

Partial mobilization, therefore, will not deprive Ukraine of the opportunity to liberate more of its occupied territory during the winter, according to ISW.

Third: restoring security and territorial integrity. Fourth: security guarantees. And fifth: decisiveness. We are ready for peace. "But to a fair and just world. That is why the whole world is with us... Russia wants war. But Russia cannot stop the course of history. Humanity and international law are stronger than one terrorist state. Russia will have to end this war. The war it start."

According to the president, the five commanders of the defenders of Mariupol will remain in Turkey until the end of the war - these are the terms of the exchange. In Turkey, they will be under the personal protectorate of the Turkish president and in comfortable conditions. They will also have the opportunity to meet in person.

This is the result of personal agreements between President Zelensky and President Erdogan," Yermak wrote. He also confirmed the release of ten foreigners who fought for Ukraine and were threatened with death - they are already in the city of Riyadh.

" We exchanged 200 of our heroes for Medvedchuk , who has already given all possible evidence to the investigation. And the five heroes-commanders of Azovstal - for 55 Russian prisoners who are of no interest to us," Yermak added.

Kremlin proxies in Ukraine double down ahead of annexation votes
[An Nahar] Kremlin-installed officials in Ukrainian regions controlled by Moscow's forces vowed on Thursday to press ahead with polls this week on annexation by Russia, after world leaders condemned the votes and said the results would be void.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was expected to defend what Ukraine's allies are calling an unlawful land grab, during a U.N. Security Council meeting called by La Belle France over rights abuses in Ukraine.

Four Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine -- Donetsk and Lugansk in the east and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south -- announced that they would hold the votes over five days, beginning on Friday.

Vladimir Saldo, the Moscow-installed head of Kherson, which fell early into the Russian invasion, said the referendum would go ahead in his region regardless of the criticism.

"The date has been set. We have the green light. Voting begins tomorrow and nothing can prevent this," he told Russian state-run media.

"People have been waiting and they're demanding that this vote is held soon," he added.

Western leaders convening in New York this week unanimously condemned the ballots.

Speaking at the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
, U.S. President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. We get to suffer the consequences...
accused Russian President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
of "shamelessly" violating the U.N. Charter with a war aimed at "extinguishing Ukraine's right to exist as a state."

- DOOR-TO-DOOR VOTING -
The integration of the war-scarred regions into Russia would represent a major escalation of the conflict, as Moscow could then try to say it was defending its own territory from Ukrainian forces.

After the votes were announced by his proxy officials in Ukraine, Putin announced that Russia would call up some 300,000 reservists to bolster the war effort and cautioned that Moscow would use "all means" to protect its territory.

Former Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev said in a statement on social media that those means included "strategic nuclear weapons". He predicted the voting regions "will integrate into Russia."

For most observers, the results of the concurrent votes are already a foregone conclusion and were rushed because Ukrainian forces were making sweeping gains in a counter-offensive to recapture the east.

The referendums are reminiscent of a similar ballot in 2014 that saw the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine annexed by Russia. Western capitals said the vote was fraudulent and hit Moscow with sanctions in response.

Election officials in the Donetsk region, which has been partially controlled since 2014 by Moscow-backed separatists, said that voting would take place door-to-door for the first days. But it would only be possible in polling stations on the final day, Tuesday.

Putin's move this week to call up reservists for Ukraine sparked small protests across Russia, resulting in more than 1,300 people being detained.

#1  Old skool voting like a town in Switzerland uses: they plant a ceremonial sword in the middle of the field and the 'AYE' votes line up on one side and the 'NAY" on the other.

In this case the Russians dig a burial pit on the 'NAY' side ...less work after the 'vote'.

New prisoner exchange. There are big questions
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets.

Last night, an exchange of prisoners of war between the Russian and Ukrainian sides took place.

The commander of Azov and his deputy Denis Prokopenko "Radis" and Svyatoslav Polomar "Kalina" returned from Russian captivity. They also report the release of Volyn and Chemist. They were exchanged for 55 Russian servicemen. Apparently, this is all that was captured during the "regrouping" in the Kharkov direction.

They also canceled Medvedchuk, for 200 Ukrainian soldiers.

No. You have to release yours. But this process must always be done correctly.

A simple example. The exchange fund on the Russian side is still about tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers. For Medvedchuk, no matter how much you don’t give a damn about him (he’s nobody), if hypothetically, okay - exchange for 200 SIMPLE VSUshnikov and Teroboronists, with the condition that they will never again participate in hostilities - you can.

Give those exactly. However, there are not ordinary APUs. judging by the photo, at least a very significant part of them are dung.

Next moment. How did you meet the dung beetles? "Kvartal 95" that same evening met those with fanfare and spotlights, hundreds of photos on social networks. The Russian side, God forbid, if today or tomorrow shows the rescued, they will show it from the side, from behind. And in a week, when the topic has already come to naught due to many new events, one or two interviews will be shown.

Why once again bloggers, military correspondents, point to such things? Not because we are interested in it, but because it is impossible to hush it up. There is a recognition of the problem - it is solved. No recognition of the problem - it will never be solved.

Recently (also writing as an example) numerous questions have been raised, including:

- and a terrible shortage of UAVs at the front, although we have the most advanced and unparalleled in development, but they are not at the front. But the Armed Forces of Ukraine, supplied with everything by NATO, have;

- and the insufficient number of groups used in Ukraine, when it comes to the fact that in the offensive we knock out the Armed Forces of Ukraine from positions with smaller forces, but there is no one to consolidate the success. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have an army of 700 thousand, plus other power structures, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have the entire participating group - up to 150 thousand people

- and the absence of military correspondents at the front, thank God, this was decided not in the first days, but in two weeks)
- and so on.

These and other issues, after a period of non-recognition and resistance, were nevertheless recognized. Some have been resolved, some are already being actively resolved.

But in terms of the information component, the Ministry of Defense, where that cart was, practically remained there. But it is worth recognizing that the work of the information front on the part of the state apparatus is absolutely unsatisfactory, for a deuce with a minus. From the Russian side, it is now being pulled out only by military correspondents and, surprisingly, bloggers.

Above, as it were, they should understand that attending the information war is obligatory. The information field does not physically accept vacuum. You will not actively fill it with information, moreover, with positively truthful information, there is enough of it, this field will instantly be occupied by the enemy with his PR and throwing in a lot of information, actively seasoning it with fake information.

In conclusion, I will cite the opinion of Daniil Bezsonov, previously known in the militia under the call sign Goodwin, now the Deputy Minister of Information of the DPR. In my opinion, it is the most emotionally sustained, but to the point and sharply illuminates the topic.

Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on the principles of partial mobilization in Russia
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

[ColonelCassad] 1. Those who are necessary to complete the tasks will be called up - these are, of course, shooters, tankers, artillerymen, drivers, driver-mechanics

2. As such, there is no call-up order from the reserve, but priority is given to those who have suitable military registration specialties

3. The number of those called up is determined by the regular needs of completed military units.

4. One of the main factors is the availability of combat experience.

5. Both officers and privates and sergeants will be called up.

6. Under the law, privates and sergeants under 35 years of age, junior officers are subject to conscription for mobilization up to 50, seniors up to 55.

7. There are positions that can be filled by women with relevant military specialties, for example, medical workers - but the need for such specialists is minimal

8. In accordance with the law, the following will not be called up:

• reserved citizens, these include employees of defense industry enterprises
• recognized as temporarily unfit for health reasons
• engaged in constant care for a family member or group I disabled
• having 4 or more dependent children in under the age of 16
• those whose mothers, in addition to them, have 4 or more children under the age of 8 and raise them without a husband preparation"

10. If a military pensioner, regardless of belonging to law enforcement agencies, is retired (over 65 years of age or for health reasons) and removed from the military register, he is not subject to conscription for mobilization

11. Quotas for the number of those called up from the reserve are not set based on volumes of the available mobilization reserve, each region has a separate mobilization task, it depends on the number of citizens on military registration in the region of residence in Russia is registered with the military, can be called up.

G7 condemns Russia's mobilization, plans to impose new sanctions
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] G7 foreign ministers have said they will pursue further sanctions against Russia, following President Vladimir Putin’s move to mobilize reservists for the war in Ukraine.

Ministers from the Group of Seven “deplored deliberate Russian escalatory steps, including the partial mobilization of reservists and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric,” they said in a statement on Wednesday night.

For the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

The G7 would “pursue further targeted sanctions and are committed to sustained economic and political pressure on Russia,” they said after a meeting on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly.

“We will study, we will adopt, new restrictive measures, both personal and sectoral,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who attended the meeting, told reporters earlier on Wednesday after a meeting with his European colleagues.

The G7 ministers from Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union’s top diplomat, also condemned a plan to hold “sham referenda on sovereign Ukrainian territory” in the occupied Donbas.

The voting “cannot be free or fair” while Russian forces are present, they added.

The ministers repeated a pledge made at the beginning of September to “finalize preparations” for the implementation of a price cap on Russian oil.

They also called on Russia to “hand back the control” to Ukraine of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been the target of strikes in recent weeks.

#1  Finland said Wednesday it is preparing a national solution to "limit or completely prevent" tourism from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

"This national solution may include new legislation, which would be adopted very quickly," Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told a press conference.

Finland drastically limited tourist visas for Russians in September.

"Finland does not want to be a country that is a transit country for Schengen visas issued by other countries either," Haavisto said.

The Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania — which border Russia — have already toughened their own visa rules leaving Finland as Russia's last EU neighbor for Schengen visa holders to transit through.

#3  Wise move. Why poke the Russian Bear without a well thought out plan? Comparing American Vietnam War draft dodgers to Canada and Russian 'mobilization' evaders -- rather doubt Putin will be as passive as LBJ... Also, after the Spetznatz 'tourists' to Crimea in 2014 who would want a large number of military age Russians crossing the border...?
