Florida man freed after serving 32 years for murder could land back in prison
[NYPOST] A Florida man freed last month after spending 32 years behind bars for a murder he’s always denied committing could be heading back to prison — after an appeals court ruled that his conviction should not have been overturned.

Crosley Green, now 64, was convicted of first-degree murder in 1990 for shooting dead Charles "Chip" Flynn, 22, in Brevard County, largely because of testimony from Flynn’s ex-girlfriend who was with him at the time, the Washington Post noted.

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
the conviction was overturned in 2018 by a federal judge who accused prosecutors of withholding crucial evidence — including the fact that both responding cops had suspected Flynn’s ex was the killer.

No physical evidence tied him to the case, and three witnesses who claimed Green had confessed later recanted, the outlet said.

Green — who’d initially been sent to death row, where he spent 19 years — was finally freed just over a year ago, on April 8, after defeating an initial appeal by Florida state.

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
he faces the possibility of being sent back behind bars after the Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit threw out the decision to vacate his conviction, saying that the concerns over withheld evidence had been exhausted ahead of the federal judge’s decision.

As his legal team fights to appeal that decision, Green gave an emotional presser, praying that "the judge will keep me free and take a look at this once again."

"Yes, a wrong has been done to me ... With the grace of God, I hope it will be straightened," he said, according to footage posted by WKMG.

"I look forward to staying home, staying free and putting this behind me."

Diane Clark, then a sergeant who first arrived at the 1989 murder scene, said at the presser that "things didn’t add up" in the slaying.

"In this particular case with Crosley Green, the truth was hidden," Clark said.

"To me, that’s a travesty of justice. He spent half his life in prison for something that I don’t believe he did."

Green’s attorneys are asking that the full 11-judge appeals panel reconsider the decision — and will push for a governor’s pardon if it fails, they told the Washington Post.

#4  The “cho-mos” (slang for child molesters) are unfortunately segregated into their own section nowadays to prevent prison justice. That being said there are some who are wrongfully convicted. A big tactic during nasty divorces/custody fights is to accuse the father of molestation. Just the accusation is enough. Jurors are eager to put away the accused on the flimsiest evidence. Sometimes the accusation is all the evidence needed.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Afghanistan - Iraq burn pit update
[Breitbart] Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Thursday urging her to stand up for veterans by requiring the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to acknowledge illnesses caused by burn pits and toxic materials.

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed bipartisan legislation called the Health Care for Burn Pit Veterans Act on February 16, 2022, which would require the VA to recognize the connection between the illnesses of post-9/11 veterans and exposure to burn pits and toxic materials. Budd asked Pelosi to "expeditiously bring to the floor" the legislation for a vote in the U.S. House, with the hopes of quickly sending the bill to President Joe Biden’s desk for approval. Budd said in his letter to Pelosi:
Congress has an obligation to care for our veterans who made significant sacrifices in the preservation of our freedoms during the War on Terror. I am confident that S. 3541 will overwhelmingly pass the House. Therefore, given how long burn pit exposed veterans have waited for the care they deserve, the House must advance this critical legislation immediately.

According to the Washington Post, the U.S. military used burn pits "throughout Iraq and Afghanistan to dispose of waste, medical and hazardous materials, and jet fuel, exposing veterans to toxins that have caused long-lasting medical problems." However, veterans exposed to burn pits "often face difficult disability benefit claims processes" with the VA to access the health care they need.

Another Post report noted that between 2007 and 2020, the VA denied almost 80 percent of all disability claims related to burn pit exposures, claiming there is "scant and inconclusive evidence" on whether burn pits are the cause of these illnesses.

The bill, which is co-sponsored by every member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, would update the VA’s healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances. It would also extend the eligibility period for VA hospital care and other medical services for veterans who served after September 11, 2001 and were "exposed to toxic substances, radiation, or other conditions, including those who did not enroll to receive VA care during the eligibility period," according to the bill summary.

The VA would additionally be required to annually train its healthcare and benefits personnel on the matter and "analyze total and respiratory disease mortality in veterans who served in specified locations on specified dates." The VA would be required to conduct a study to determine trends in the rates of the incidence of cancer in veterans and publish resources for veterans, families, and caregivers.

A Post column pointed to activists’ comparison of the VA’s neglect of veterans with burn pit-related illnesses to the Agent Orange debacle following the Vietnam War. Agent Orange is an herbicide the military used to clear jungles that "sickened thousands of veterans, but it took the government years to recognize its effect."

"The government would do well to avoid another such disgraceful episode. As the United States grapples with the legacy of its war in Afghanistan, it should not avoid facing the immense toll that such conflicts have had on our troops," the column reads.

74-Year-Old [Florida] Golfer Opens Fire on Man Walking Dog on Delray Beach Golf Course, Beats Him with Club
[Breitbart] "went ballistic"
A 74-year-old golfer lost his mind on Sunday when he saw a man walking his dog on Delray Beach, Florida, golf course, but he didn’t just yell at the guy. Instead, he reportedly broke out a rosco and started shooting at him. Then he attacked with a club when he ran out of ammo.

Certainly, it is against the rules to walk a dog on the golf course. That goes without saying. But the golfer’s reaction is extreme, to be sure.

According to a report at WPBF TV, witnesses alleged that 74-year-old golfer Robert Levine went ballistic when he saw 64-year-old Herbert Merritt walking his dog along the 15th hole on Sunday evening at about 7 p.m.

Levine became furious and began shooting at and chasing Merritt around the green. He maimed the dog lover in the ankle and then smacked him with a golf club after setting the gat aside.

#4  Many years ago I was playing golf with some friends when we got to the 10th hole tee. There was a couple who were setting up a picnic in the middle of the fairway halfway to the green. When I pointed out this was a golf course and not a picnic ground the young woman said, "We are in this park and we have every right to be here". I then pointed to the actual park and told her that was the park. They refused to leave so we played through. When we got to the green and looked back the course manager was escorting them off.

Evergreen CO is in the mountains west of Denver, @8000 ft. Common course practice was to issue a bucket of range balls with each cart. The 10th hole was wide and long, like a mountain pasture.

On more than one occasion, range balls were used to startle and drive the elk herd from the green into the rough.

The consumer is screwed and again with wings already at $4.40lbs. We can only guess what the prices for eggs and etc... will be in the next few months.

BTW: Since it takes about 5 to 6 months from a chick hatching to laying an egg. Which means by December we should be back to normal. But the egg and poultry prices will likely remain inflated for another 6 months to a year.

Ukraine conflict: British man Scott Sibley killed
[BBC] A British national has been killed in Ukraine and a second is missing, the UK Foreign Office has said.

Sources in Ukraine told the BBC the dead man is Scott Sibley, who is understood to have been fighting for Ukrainian forces.

He is the first British national confirmed to have been killed in the conflict and has been described as a "friend like no other".

The Foreign Office has not released the identity of either person.

But a spokesman said it was supporting both their families.

Details of Mr Sibley's death and how or when the second person went missing have not been given.

Diplomatic sources have said it was most likely the two individuals were foreign volunteers serving with Ukrainian armed forces in either Mariupol or elsewhere in Donbas.

Tributes have been paid online to Mr Sibley, who is understood to be a former member of British armed forces, including on Facebook and on fundraising pages set up in his memory.

A post on the Logistics Support Squadron Facebook page described him as a "former serving soldier" of the squadron and said he had "showed Commando spirit until the end".

The founder of a fundraising page described Mr Sibley, also known as Sibs, as a "friend like no other" and "the bravest person I've had the pleasure to have known".

"His life may have been cut short but he lived to the full and did things the Sibs way, right until the end," he wrote.

China-Japan-Koreas
South Korea arrests businessman, army captain on spying charges
[DW] The South Korean captain allegedly received a wristwatch with a spy camera to help him steal information. Both the captain and the businessman were paid in cryptocurrency, according to South Korean police.

A North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
n agent recruited two people and paid them cryptocurrency in a bid to gain access to a South Korean military system, South Korean police said on Thursday.

The police said they arrested two people on spying charges, both of them South Korean nationals. One of them was identified as a businessman who had been running a cryptocurrency exchange, while the other was an army captain.

Authorities said both individuals knew that they were communicating with a North Korean agent. The whereabouts of the agent remain unknown.

PYONGYANG TARGETS SOUTH KOREA'S COMMAND NETWORK
According to the police, the agent and the 38-year-old businessman first made contact in an online cryptocurrency community six years ago. The North Korean agent approached the 29-year-old army captain separately, authorities say.

The agent seemed to be interested in the Joint Command and Control System, South Korea's confidential military network.

The entrepreneur allegedly bought a wristwatch equipped with a hidden camera and sent it to the captain, but — despite the military officer's bringing the device to the base — he relied on his smartphone instead, police said. The authorities also believe the businessman was planning to use a USB hacking device, the AP news agency said citing a statement from the Korean National Police Agency.

The businessman is said to have attempted to bribe a different military officer in exchange for secrets, but the officer rejected the proposal.

OVER HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN CRYPTOCURRENCY
Investigators claim that North Korea used cryptocurrency as a means of payment to the South Koreans, transferring an equivalent of 700 million won (roughly $550,000 or €520,000) to the crypto entrepreneur and giving the army captain another 48 million won.

South Korean authorities said North Korea failed to gain access to the Joint Command and Control system. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
the captain is believed to have passed on login information for the network, as well as some images of its website and military security guidelines.

Both South Korean nationals have been indicted under the country's strict National Security Act.

Science & Technology
Rocket Lab is ready to catch a rocket booster with a helicopter.
[FoxWeather] With every rocket launch, millions of dollars in hardware are used just once. Rocket Lab is looking to join companies like SpaceX, re-flying its rocket boosters multiple times to drive down launch costs, but the two space companies are going about it differently.

On Friday, Rocket Lab plans to fully test its method of retrieving a rocket booster after launch by catching it using a helicopter and parachute system. It will be the first end-to-end test of this recovery technique for the California-based company that launches in New Zealand.

Here's the set-up: The Electron rocket will launch from New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula, carrying 34 ride-sharing satellites to orbit.

After separation, the booster or bottom half of the rocket will begin returning to Earth, performing a series of complex maneuvers to allow it to survey the extreme heat as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere.

A parachute will then deploy from the booster, slowing Electron down enough to allow Rocket Lab's Sikorsky helicopter to catch the parachute.

What will it look like: Besides the usual awe of a launch, Rocket Lab also plans to have a camera on the booster and provide views from the rocket as it returns. The company said this feed might cut out, but that will be a wild view if the video stays up.

When is it happening: Rocket Lab is targeting 6:35 p.m. ET on Friday (10:35 a.m. NZST, April 30) to launch the mission called "There and Back Again."

A live stream of the launch will begin about 20 minutes prior on YouTube.

Why 7 HOURS of sleep - not 8 - is the perfect amount in middle age: Scientists warn any more or less raises risk of dementia
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Those of us with PTSD are already demented.
  • Cambridge researchers studied sleeping patterns of half a million Britons

  • Seven hours was optimal, with more or less linked with worse brain function

  • This could be down to a buildup of amyloid in brain, a tell-tale sign of dementia

Bottomless pit
[AirForceMag] The manned fighter aircraft that will form the centerpiece of the Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance program will cost hundreds of millions of dollars per plane, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told members of Congress on April 27—but the service can reduce costs in development and sustainment.

Speaking before the House Armed Services Committee on the fiscal 2023 budget request, Kendall specified that the main NGAD fighter would cost "multiple hundreds of millions of dollars ... on an individual basis," acknowledging that such a price tag "is a number that’s going to get your attention."
And, that's before the cost overruns start...
By comparison, the F-22 cost roughly $135 million per tail, making it the most expensive fighter the U.S. Air Force has ever developed. The F-35A, meanwhile, costs around $80 million per jet, but that number could rise.

NGAD, according to Kendall’s estimate, will dwarf those costs, at least when it comes to price per plane. But the sixth-generation platform will fulfill a key air dominance role, Kendall noted.

"It’s going to be an expensive airplane; F-22 was an expensive airplane. It was one of my aircraft in one of my earlier positions, but it’s also an incredibly effective aircraft. It’s been dominant in the air for decades now. And we expect NGAD to be the same," Kendall said.

With such a massive cost per plane, though, work will have to be done in other areas to keep the program’s overall cost down.

#1  Somehow, having ten really qualitative aircraft against 400 lesser ones still seems foolish.

Somewhere in my WWII history recollection, I recall the quote from Stalin. "Quantity has a quality of its own". Stalin was really fond of this bit of Hegelian wisdom, somewhat bastardized by Engels and completely watered down by Lenin.

#2  drones w laser that can kill a tank or a missile

each

probably $5M by 2030

making them stealthy probably quintuple the cost but still relatively cheap

range would still be an issue however

#3  ...Some years ago, there was a novel - the name escapes me - that featured a future war in 2020. One of the stars was a combat plane called BLUE LIGHT.

It was so expensive - and nobody knew HOW expensive, because everything about it was classified, including its budget - that the military could only afford 12. On the other hand, they were invisible and invincible.

NGAD had better be both of those things.

#4  Chuck Yeager had an opinion on such things. My opinion is drone swarms will become a thing. Countermeasure for swarms is to attack command and control. Countermeasure to that is drone autonomy. That begets the singularity. Sky Net wins in the end.

The Russian tank design flaw that makes them 'mobile coffins': Multiple shells stored together means even an indirect hit can spark chain reaction and set off an explosion
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News]
  • Russian tanks store up to 40 shells in a carousel at the base of the turret

  • Even an indirect hit can spark a chain reaction, igniting the ammunition

  • This blasts the turret high into the sky and makes the crew 'sitting ducks'

#1  ...We pretty much knew this fifty years ago when the first generations of Soviet tanks with automatic loaders came out - that's why the shells are in that 'carousel'. Of course, it's understood that to this day the autoloaders still aren't quite perfect, because from time to time they still try and load one of the crew members.

What should be terrifying - and enraging - Russian tank crew members is this: see those boxes on the tank's exterior? They're for Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA). Short version is that if they get hit by something, they explode outwards, cancelling out the effect of the hit. Now, missiles like JAVELIN have a double warhead which can defeat them, but they still provide considerable protection against garden-variety RPGs, artillery/cannon rounds, and some ATGMs. (They don't do much against the A-10's cannon, because they might stop the first round but they won't do much against the other hundred or so coming right behind it.)

The thing is that there's pics out there of destroyed Russian tanks where the ERA boxes have been blown open by whatever killed it.

And the boxes were empty.

LOL, my senior thesis in High school was on the difference between the soviet mindset of quantity vs the NATO one of quality. One of the articles I read mentioned the autoloader's tendency to grab the gunner's arm and attempt to load it. The next line of the article was and I quote as I remember it vividly, "Supposedly, this has been fixed."

#4  Massive corruption revealed, and obviously widespread. But also simple reality of not actually having massive inventory sustainment funding, hence empty ERA containers. Maintenance of any system in the Soviet/Russian inventory is always suspect, but conscript soldier, weak NCO corps, and slavishly pliant junior officers don't make for confidence in actual operation readiness.

#7  Well Somebody had a late night checking hydraulic fluid levels.

Anyone else catch that video of the gal in the loading position in a M1? Took like a minute to load and almost managed to breech he hand. One of the comments was like, "That took long enough to step out of the tank and have my last smoke." Hopefully it was one of those 'Trying something new LOL' videos and not 'Hey check me out in my MO!' vids.

#8  And another nice thing about the T-72 is not only is there ammunition stored around the turret, the fuel is under that! So one boom leads to another!

These tanks were made for conscripts. You can always get new conscripts.

#10  #5 #6, Also recall it was popular with Soviet airforces to report that they were experiencing "icing" which would then give cover for draining out the deicing agent to filter and then consume. Tasty.
