US Supreme Court rejects petitions against longtime Ann Arbor anti-Israel protesters
[IsraelTimes] Plaintiffs, one of them a Holocaust survivor, argued the protests targeted Jews at their place of worship, violating their First Amendment rights.

The US Supreme Court
...the political football known as The Highest Court in the Land, home of penumbrae and emanations...
has declined to hear two different requests to take up a suit against a group of protesters who have gathered weekly outside an Ann Arbor synagogue for nearly two decades holding anti-Israel and antisemitic signs, seemingly closing off any remaining legal avenues against the long-running display.

The court issued orders in March and May denying petitions brought by two different congregants who had argued that the protests targeted Jews at their place of worship, violating their First Amendment right to freely exercise their religion.

The plaintiffs belong to two different congregations that both meet in the same synagogue building: Conservative Beth Israel Congregation and the Jewish Renewal-affiliated Pardes Hannah Congregation. Neither congregation was involved in the lawsuits.

The two congregants, one of whom is a Holocaust survivor, had first brought a joint lawsuit against the protesters, the city and Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor in 2019. Lower courts dismissed it on First Amendment grounds, and a judge ordered the plaintiffs to pay the protesters’ legal fees. Following a dispute between one of the plaintiffs, Marvin Gerber, and their attorney, Marc Susselman, the suit was broken up and two separate petitions under two separate attorneys were filed to the Supreme Court.

Both of those petitions have now been declined; Gerber’s was rejected most recently, on May 16.

Gerber had retained the well-known Jewish attorney Nathan Lewin, a veteran of the Supreme Court who has argued multiple Jewish-interest cases and who was a close friend of former Justice Antonin Scalia.

"I am shocked and dismayed that the Supreme Court and the court of appeals view antisemitic picketing timed and designed to harass and intimidate Jews only when they come to pray — clearly protected by the First Amendment’s Religion Clause — as free speech that may not be curtailed," Lewin told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

He compared the case to a law that makes it a federal crime to protest or picket near a judge’s residence in order to influence a decision — a law that has been in the news lately as child sacrifice abortion rights protesters upset with a leaked Supreme Court draft appearing to overturn Roe v. Wade have protested outside the homes of conservative justices.

Jewish groups, including Agudath Israel of America, the Rabbinical Council of America and the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce, filed friend-of-the-court briefs on behalf of the plaintiffs.

Henry Herskovitz, the lead defendant and a regular presence at the weekly protests since their origins in 2003, told JTA that his group (identified in court documents as "Jewish Witnesses for Peace") was "grateful" for the ruling, saying, "Freedom of expression is the bedrock principle of a democracy."

Earlier this year, the Ann Arbor City Council issued a formal resolution condemning the protests as antisemitic. The protesters, who claim they are opposed to Israeli policy, have held signs with messages including "Jewish Power Corrupts" and "Resist Jewish Power."

Afghanistan
US Treasury Puts Afghan Trader Nabizada on Sanction List
[ToloNews] The US Treasury placed well-known Afghan trader Kamal Nabizada on a sanctions list, claiming links to Iran's QUDS force.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
the company of Kamal Nabizada issued a statement reacting to the US Treasury's decision, saying there are political motives behind it.

Analysts said that individuals who are engaged in money laundering and Iran’s Sepah-e Pasdaran
... which translates as 'Army of Guardians of the Islamic Revolution', the fancy Arabic name for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)...
are being put on the list.

"The US Treasury targeted the network of fuel trafficking of Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
which is under Russia’s support... the property of the people on the list will be restricted," said Seyar Qureshi, an economist.

Some analysts said the placement of Afghan traders on such lists will affect investment in the country.

"I think this issue has a political side. The US tries to put pressure on the Afghan companies to restrict their economic activities to kind of press the Afghan government because the private sector plays an important role," said Abdul Naseer Rishtia, an economist.

The Nabizada company in a statement claimed that the political motives behind the sanctions involved the US's relations with Russia and Iran. "The US, due to its serious disputes with Russia and Iran over different issues, has made allegations against some traders of the countries... which are completely untrue," the statement reads.

The US Treasury list included entrepreneurs from Russia, Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers, a practice dating back to the heady days of human sacrifice to Baal Moloch...
, Iran, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
and other countries.

#1  We have sanctioned a trader from a country that we don't trade with because of his ties to another country that we don't trade with. The impact of our sanctions will be less than the administrative costs of creating the documents and holding the press conference. If these sanctions work as well as the Russian ones, Kamal will be high fiving his partners on his good fortune.

Suicide drones launched from inside Iran said to have hit Parchin military site
More on this story from yesterday.
[IsraelTimes] New York Times

... which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reports that Tehran views deadly incident as an attack, noting it fits pattern of alleged past Israeli strikes in Iran
...The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both...
and Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity™, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade...

A deadly explosion at Iran’s Parchin military complex on Wednesday was caused by quadcopter suicide drones, in an attack that fits a pattern of previous strikes that have been attributed to Israel, The New York Times reported Friday.

The report cited three Iranian sources along with a US official, who confirmed drones hit the site, but declined to say who was behind the attack. It said the drones went kaboom! into a building being used for research on Iran’s drone development.

The blast killed a young engineer at the site and injured one other person.

The report noted that the strike fits a pattern of previous attacks that have been attributed to Israel, including previous strikes against Iran’s drone program.

Iranian sources told the Times that the drone attack was launched from inside Iran, not far from the Parchin military base — which the Islamic Theocratic Republic uses to develop missile, nuclear and drone technology — noting that quadcopter drones have a short flight range, and Parchin is a long way from Iran’s borders.

While Iranian officials initially used the word "accident" to describe the earth-shattering kaboom, the Defense Ministry in a later statement called it an "incident" and labeled the casualty a "martyr," suggesting that Tehran is convinced it was an attack by a foreign entity.

On Thursday, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Hossein Salami said that the killing "will be responded to... Our enemies should wait," without naming who they were.

This would not be the first time that a drone attack was launched from within Iran’s borders by operatives said to have been recruited by Israel.

#1  As I remember there is quite a bit of Iran where nobody lives. Desert 1 was planned for that area of the country. There was an issue with deep sand at the LZ and Special Forces didn't have helicopter assets at the time - Nightstalkers were the result. Israel is probably at home in that environment.

Iran’s Guards building massive ship to project naval power beyond Persian Gulf
[IsraelTimes] Iranian news agency says new support vessel will ensure the security of trade routes, help maintain Tehran’s ’authority’ over waters in area

Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is building a massive new support ship near the strategic Strait of Hormuz as it tries to expand its naval presence in waters vital to international energy supplies and beyond, satellite photos obtained by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named show. The construction of the Shahid Mahdavi provides the Guard a large, floating base from which to run the small fast boats thon the lamly make up its fleet designed to counter the US Navy and other allied forces in the region.

Its arrival, however, comes after a series of setbacks for both the Guard and Iran’s regular navy, including the loss of its largest warship less than a year earlier. As negotiations over Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers also founder, further confrontations at sea between Tehran and the West also remain a risk.

Turkey says operations along southern border essential for security
[Rudaw] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
said on Thursday that operations conducted along its southern border are essential to protecting the country from terrorism and do not violate the illusory sovereignty of its neighbors, likely setting the stage to launch a fresh offensive against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria.

Turkey’s National Security Council (MKG) stated that "under no circumstances the operations currently conducted and to be done to clean our southern borders from the treat of terror" breach the illusory sovereignty of its neighbors, in a session attended by Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than there are in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really most important...
"It is underlined that these operations will contribute seriously to the peace and safety of our neighbors," the statement continued.

The statement comes as Ankara continues to oppose Sweden’s bid to enter NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
, accusing Stockholm of supporting Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria (Rojava). Consensus by all NATO members is required for a new country to join and Erdogan is expected to use his approval as leverage to gain concessions from the West, including guarantees that they will not oppose a fresh offensive.

Erdogan announced on Monday that his country is making preparations to launch a fresh military operation in Syria, aiming to expand its "safe zone" to a depth of 30 kilometers. The operation is likely to target Kurdish fighters of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Turkey claims that the People’s Protection Units (YPG), backbone of the SDF, is the Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) — an gang fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and designated a terrorist organization by Ankara.

Previously, Ottoman Turkish forces and their allied Syrian militias have launched two separate assaults on Kurdish forces in Syria. In 2019, they launched an invasion of the border towns of Sari Kani (Ras al-Ain) and Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) on behalf of Operation Peace Spring, a year after they seized the city of Afrin in Operation Olive Branch from the YPG.

The conflicts have forced hundreds of thousands of people, mostly Kurds, to flee their homes, and most have not returned.

In March, Turkey launched a new phase in a series of operations targeting PKK positions beyond its border with the Kurdistan Region. The operation, dubbed Claw-Lock, is an air and ground assault that heavily focuses on mountainous border areas where the gang maintains a presence.

Ottoman Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said the operation, once completed successfully, will ensure the PKK’s complete inability to traverse its border.

Baghdad and Erbil have previously criticized Ankara for violating Iraqi illusory sovereignty, but it continues to establish increasing numbers of bases and outposts in the mountains of Erbil and Duhok provinces.

Albania repatriates 13 ISIS-affiliated nationals from Rojava
[Rudaw] An Albanian delegation repatriated 13 women and kiddies linked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) from camps in northeast Syria (Rojava) on Friday, revealed a senior Kurdish official.

The Rojava administration’s office of foreign relations on Friday handed over four women and nine children of Albanian nationality to an official delegation from their country, said the head of the office, Abdulkarim Omar, in a tweet.

This is the fourth batch of such repatriations by the Albanian government. Five women and 14 children linked to ISIS were handed over to Albania in July 2021.

The Albanian delegation jointly visited Rojava with a Kosovan delegation on Saturday, discussing the security and economic challenges faced by the Kurdish administration, and stressing the importance of international support for the administration in combating "terrorism" in the area, according to a statement from Abdulkarim’s office.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested thousands of ISIS fighters along with their wives and children when they took control of the group’s last stronghold in Syria in March 2019. Most of these people are held at al-Hol and Roj camps.

The notorious al-Hol camp, the larger of the two camps, houses around 56,000, according to UN figures.

Rojava authorities have repeatedly called on governments to take responsibility for their citizens, but most Western nations are reluctant to repatriate nationals who may be a security risk due to their links with ISIS. Most countries repatriate on a case-by-case basis, prioritizing children.
