Sudan candidate for next Arab revolution
KHARTOUM: Sudan could see the next Arab revolution because anger is rising over an economic crisis and government repression worse than in Egypt before the ousting of Hosni Mubarak, an opposition leader said on Monday.

“The regime is doomed ... We as opposition agreed that it cannot be reformed. You need to change, to overthrow the regime,” said Farouk Abu Issa, head of the National Consensus Forces, an umbrella group of Sudan’s main opposition parties.

Sudan has seen a series of small protests in the capital Khartoum and the undeveloped east against sharp rises in food prices. Many demonstrators say they have been inspired by “Arab Spring” uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia but have been quickly dispersed by security forces.

Veteran President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir has been battling a severe economic crises since South Sudan took most of the oil production — the lifeline of the economy — when it split away as an independent country in July, as agreed under a 2005 peace deal.

The crisis has been exacerbated by fighting with rebels in southern border states and the western region of Darfur, draining resources at a time when the state needs to cut expenditure. Inflation hit 19.8 percent in October.

Issa went into exile in Cairo after Bashir seized power in 1989 and has become a prominent opposition figure since his return. He was briefly detained last month after officials said he was trying to organize protests with foreign aid, charges he denies.

“The ruling party says Sudan is not affected by the Arab Spring. How can Sudan be an exception? Sudan is a stronger candidate (than Egypt and Tunisia were),” Abu Issa said in an interview.

“The volume of corruption is much worse than in countries that have seen a revolution, be it Tunisia or Egypt. A small number of people benefit from a large budget,” he said.

“Regarding the repression, lack of respect of human rights, restrictions of other political rights Sudan is the worst. In Egypt there were some rights ... Here there is no rule of law. Here judges follow the ruling party 100 percent,” he said.

Abu Issa said the opposition had been weakened by the dominance of Bashir’s National Congress Party (NCP) but was working out a new strategy to rally support.

“The opposition parties are weak because they have been deprived of funding, of a role in the past 20 years. The ruling party has monopolized power,” he said.

The alliance, which includes veteran Islamist leader Hassan Al-Turabi, was planning a conference to work out an alternative government program and constitution.

Bashir is expected to unveil a new cabinet soon to bring in fresh faces after southern ministers left with Juba’s independence.

Government officials say the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia will not be repeated in Sudan and the country will be able to overcome the loss of oil revenues by expanding gold exports and developing the agricultural sector.

“Sudan is different from Libya, Syria or Yemen,” deputy parliamentary speaker Hajo Gassem Al-Sayed told Al-Sahafa newspaper on Monday.

“We have put in place solutions ... policies to confront it,” he said when asked whether Sudan could deal with an “Arab revolt.”

Abu Issa, a lawyer, said boom years with massive oil revenues had been wasted by corruption and a lack of planning.

“We made $70 billion from oil but where is the money,” he said, citing the example of the underdeveloped east Sudan where students have been demanding more development to fight poverty. “There is no development there, no projects for schools, hospitals, infrastructure."

Abu Issa said the government needed to reach out to South Sudan and end tensions over violence in the border area — north and south accuse each other of backing rebels in each other’s territories.

“It is in our and their interest to have normal relations, trade coming over the border,” he said, adding that regardless who was responsible for the violence diplomacy was required.

“I would not retaliate (against the South). You need to sit down and solve disputes through dialogue,” he said.

Israel to back Kenya offensive in Somalia
[Iran Press TV] Kenyan officials say Israel is ready to help their country in its offensive against al-Shabaab
... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. They are aligned with al-Qaeda but operate more like the Afghan or Pakistani Taliban. The organization's current leader is Ibrahim Haji Jama Mee'aad, also known as Ibrahim al-Afghani. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a Kenyan al-Qaeda member, is considered the group's military leader...
fighters in Somalia, Press TV reports.
Practice against the time when Egypt becomes Somalia-on-the-Nile?
Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has requested Tel Aviv's assistance in carrying out intensified offensives inside neighboring Somalia.

In response to the request, Israeli President Shimon Peres has vowed to aid Kenya with whatever it needs in its fight against Al-Shabaab fighters.

Meanwhile Al-Shabaab says its fighters have killed 27 Kenyan troops and destroyed a military vehicle carrying ammunition.

Kenyan troops invaded Somalia last month in a bid to fight off the local fighters. Kenya blames the fighters for a spate of abductions of foreign nationals in northern Kenya, near the Somali border. The hard boyz deny the allegations.

Truce agreed between rival militias in Libya
TRIPOLI: Four days of fighting between militias from Libya's coastal city of Zawiyah and members of the Wershifanna tribe have ended after a truce was agreed, according to fighters on both sides.
Hudna. So which way is the betting going: hours or days?
Fighting had erupted on Thursday after a row over a military base, a key component of defenses under Muammar Qaddafi, along the main highway from Tripoli to Tunisia.

Libyan officials and diplomats say they are concerned at the way local disputes have flared in the heavily armed vacuum left by Qaddafi, and say some groups among those towns which rebelled early against the old order appear to be bandying accusations of pro-Qaddafi sympathies among neighboring groups in order to further their interests in long-standing local feuds.

"The fighting has stopped and brigades from Tripoli have come to maintain the peace," a fighter from Zawiyah said on Monday.

Groups of men were celebrating in the streets of Wershifanna, named after the tribe and a few miles south of the military base, on Monday and many were carrying the flag of the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC).

On Saturday, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, chairman of the NTC, blamed "irresponsible" former rebels for violence which has fanned fears that thousands of fighters who helped topple Qaddafi may turn on each other. Abdul Jalil, who NTC members said personally took part in lengthy negotiations since Friday, has been trying to end the clashes between men from Zawiyah and the neighboring tribe.

NTC spokesman Mahmoud Shammam said Abdul Jalil and other senior Libyan leaders had met representatives of both sides on Sunday in Tripoli to secure an agreement to end the fighting.

Although Qaddafi is dead, many of the rebel militias that fought to topple him say they will not hand in their weapons until a national army is formed.

Members of the Wershifanna tribe have angrily denied accusations that they harbor loyalties to Qaddafi -- several hundred demonstrated in Tripoli on Monday, angry at a local television station which had aired comments to that effect.

Niger President Stands by Amnesty Offer to Saadi Al Qathafi
[Tripoli Post] Reaffirming his stance on the former Libyan leader's son Saadi Al Qadaffy
... who is now deader than a rock...
, Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufouis told news hounds he is standing by his country's decision to offer him amnesty, saying he is entitled to stay in his nation like other "Libyan refugees."

"The attitude of the Niger government regarding this has already been noted: We have already welcomed Libyan refugees for humanitarian reasons," Issoufou said. "Of these, one is a son of (Muammar) Al Qadaffy - Saadi Al Qadaffy."

Libya wants Saadi to be returned home to stand trial, and Interpol has issued an arrest warrant - known as a "red notice" - for him, requesting his provisional arrest ahead of his extradition or surrender to an international court.

The warrant accuses him of "misappropriating properties through force and armed intimidation when he headed the Libyan Football Federation," charges that Saadi's lawyer Nick Kaufman, said earlier this month he "strenuously denies."

Kaufman has also been reported by CNN saying that he has asked the Interpol secretary general to revoke the warrant, claiming that it is politically motivated and was sought by a new Libyan leadership that lacks legitimacy.

Saadi is in Niger, the West African nation bordering Libya. His father and three brothers have been killed during the eight-month long conflict, and one more brother, Seif al-Islam, remains in hiding. Other members of the family, Safiya, Al Qadaffy's second wife, his daughter Ayesha and sons Mohammed and Hannibal all beat feet to Algeria during the conflict.

Seif al-Islam is also wanted by Interpol, but he faces even more serious charges with the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
accusing him of alleged crimes against humanity. Should Seif decides to travel, or is jugged within Niger's borders, as a party to the ICC, Niger would be obligated to turn Seif over to the ICC

Aussie sheik's passport seized in Jordan
Jordanian authorities confiscated the passport of an Australian citizen who is a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir. Ismail al-Wahwah's passport was confiscated on Thursday when he arrived at the airport in Amman. He had been in Saudi Arabia and had returned to Jordan to visit family before returning to Australia. He was not arrested but is not able to leave the country.

Hizb ut-Tahrir's Australian spokesman criticised the confiscation in a statement this afternoon and alleged Jordan's spy agency was involved. He said, "The corrupt and illegitimate ruling systems, which represent neither Islam nor Muslims, need to be uprooted entirely and replaced with the system of Islam which safeguards the rights and dignity of all citizens."

A spokesperson from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said: "We are aware of media reports that an Australian has had his passport confiscated upon arrival in Jordan last week. The Australian embassy in Amman has not received any requests for assistance."

It is not the first time Sheik al-Wahwah has encountered such problems. In 2007 he was one of a number of Hizb ut-Tahrir members denied entry to Indonesia after landing in Jakarta. They had been planning to address an international Hizb ut-Tahrir conference, which was attended by as many as 100,000 supporters.

Fifth Column
'War on terror, genocide for oil'
[Iran Press TV] Britannia's involvement in the "so-called 'war on terror'" is "genocide" and a cover for military expansionism to take over the resources of Middle Eastern nations, a leading British anti-war campaign group says.

"The so-called "war on terror" is a cover for our military aggression to gain control of the resources of western Asia," the Stop the War Coalition said.

"This is sending the poor of this country to kill the poor of those Mohammedan countries. This is trading blood for oil. This is genocide, and to most of the world, we are the terrorists," it added.

The campaign group, which is credited with organizing the largest ever anti-war demonstration in British history against the invasion of Iraq, said on the occasion of Remembrance Day -- observed in Commonwealth countries to remember the members of their armed forces killed on duty -- that Britannia has been complicit in subjugating of nations "from Paleostine to Afghanistan to Iraq to Somalia."

It added London has been complicit in "supreme crimes against humanity in Iraq and Afghanistan" yet it dares to call locals, faceless myrmidons and bully boys, "for resisting rape and pillage."

The campaign group also slammed the "bloodthirsty imperial crusade" of Britannia alongside the US, saying western soldiers in the occupied nations no more fight to defend "our freedoms" they are rather laying the foundation for a permanent military presence to ensure the "the freedoms of Exxon Mobil and British Petroleum."

"They're not establishing democracy, they're establishing the basis for an economic occupation to continue after the military occupation has ended," it added.

The campaign group then referred to the hypocritical government of the United States, which has been leading Britannia in more than a decade of bloody wars in the Middle East, under the guise of fighting terror, saying Washington officials are the real terrorists.

"We must dare to speak out ... against all enemies, foreign and domestic, including those terrorist cells in Washington DC more commonly known as the Legislative, Executive & Judicial branches," it said.

Professor Angry Over Packages for Troops, Calls them "Shameful"
[Fox News Radio] A Suffolk University law professor has issued a blistering e-mail calling plans to collect care packages for U.S. troops "shameful." Professor Michael Avery also questioned the intent of an American flag hanging in the law school's atrium.
It's so the students know what country they're sitting in. It'd be a dreadful thing if they thought they were being prepared for the Saudi law boards instead of the American one.
"I think it is shameful that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings," Avery wrote in an e-mail to his colleagues.
But they haven't, you silly, silly man. They've gone overseas to break things; killing the bad people aiming those things is a bonus.
"The United States may well be the most war prone country in the history of civilization."
He's a law professor. Were he a history professor he would have heard of Ancient Greece, Alexander the Great, Ancient Rome, Mohammed of Mecca and his spiritual heirs, the empire building of England and France, etc. ad infinitum.
The professor was critical of a program called, "Packages for the Troops." It was an effort within the law school to collect care packages for the nation's military. The e-mail has generated complaints from students and alumni.

Jeff Katz, the morning host on Talk 1200, the Fox News Radio affiliate in Boston, said his telephone lines have been jammed with outraged callers.

"He's probably not somebody who's going to be the featured speaker at the American Legion or the VFW any time soon," Katz told Fox News & Commentary.

"I very much disagree with the sentiment expressed in that email," student Brandon Tower told MyFoxBoston. "That's academia for you, I guess."
Applications are significantly down to law schools overall. I wonder how the good professor's school will do, after this publicity?
Barry Brown, the university's acting president and provost posted a response on Suffolk's website, backing both the professor and the care packages.
Cleverly spreading oil on flaming waters...
"We respect the right of our faculty members to exercise academic freedom and support all members of our community in speaking freely and expressing their opinions," Brown wrote. "A consequence of this open dialogue is the articulation of many points of view. As a diverse community, no one opinion or perspective is representative of the views of the whole community."
Not even his...
Brown said Suffolk University has a "long and proud history of supporting our men and women who have served their country in the armed forces."

But Professor Avery said the email requesting care packages was a "political statement."

"The politics of that solicitation are that war is legitimate, perhaps inevitable, and that patriotic Americans should get behind our troops," Avery wrote.
Yup, pretty much. Dang, he must be a law perfesser or something...
Camille Nelson, the dean of the Suffolk University Law School, voiced her support for the professor on the university's website.

"While I personally intend to donate a care package for our troops, I respect the right of others to hold a differing perspective," Nelson wrote. 'Ultimately, it is this robust exchange of ideas that makes for great university."
Because it's important for law students to be exposed to ideas such as sedition, hatred and illogical foolishness. Makes them better prepared for their future clientele, particularly the ones who go into politics...
"I don't think that represents the feelings of Suffolk law in general," added student Marisa Roman. "I mean clearly, we're a patriotic school. We have a huge American flag in the atrium."

As for the American flag -- Avery accused the university practicing "excessive patriotic zeal."

The flag has been hanging in the law school atrium since 2001.

"This is not a politically neutral act," Avery wrote. "Excessive patriotic zeal is a hallmark of national security states."
The other hallmark of "national security states" is the summary arrest of those protesting the hallmarks of national security states. Sleep well tonight, professor.
Katz said his team has been in touch with the university to try and help students collect care packages.

The talk radio host did have some words of wisdom for the professor: "Even as you are busy hating our troops, there are many of us standing with them and it doesn't pain me to say, God bless America," he said.

Turkey threatened to cut off electricity to Syria
Turkey threatened to cut off supplies of electricity to its neighbor Syria on Tuesday, as the Damascus regime found itself under growing pressure from Arab, Turkish, European and North American governments for its ongoing lethal crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.

“We are supplying them [Syria] with electricity at the moment. If they stay on this course, we may be forced to re-examine all of these decisions,” said the Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz on Tuesday, according to Turkey’s semi-official Anatolian Agency.

Turkey, once a close political ally and strong trading partner of Syria, welcomed a decision by the Arab League last weekend to suspend Syria’s membership in the alliance.

Days after the humiliating rebuke, a senior Arab League official told CNN the group was floating a plan to try to send some 500 observers to protect civilians in Syria.

“In a meeting headed by Dr. Nabil Al Araby, the secretary-general of the Arab League, held Monday, the Arab League and Arab human rights organizations decided on a mechanism to protect Syrian civilians which will involve sending a delegation of 500 representatives of Arab organizations, media organizations, and military observers to Syria with the objective of documenting the situation on the ground,” the official said to CNN, speaking on condition of anonymit

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hundreds of N. Korean nuclear and missile experts working in Iran
Hundreds of North Korean nuclear and missile experts have been collaborating with their Iranian counterparts in more than 10 locations across the Islamic state, a diplomatic source said Sunday.

The revelation lends credence to long-held suspicions that North Korea was helping Iran with a secret nuclear and missile program.
It was said at the time that a number of the bodies at the Syrian nuclear facility that Israel destroyed were North Korean technicians. So it would be consistent to find them in Iran.

‘Israel Paid Syria $100 Million for Golan,’ says Sadat Aide
Israel paid Syrian President Bashar Assad’s grand-uncle $100 million for the Golan Heights before the Six-Day War in 1967, says a former close friend to assassinated Egyptian president Anwar Sadat.

Dr. Mahmoud Jame’ said Sadat was briefed on the deal, according to the Jordanian-based Albawaba website.

Jame’, a member of the first Consultative Council in Egypt, said, “One morning Sadat took me with him in private and without a guard to the (Syrian part of the) Golan Heights, and I swear by the Almighty G-d that he put his hand on my shoulder and as we were standing on the Golan Heights, he told me literally, ‘Look, Mahmoud, this is the Golan. Can any power seize it so easily, even if it is Israel?”

Sadat’s friend replied, “This is impossible,” and Sadat replied, “I will tell you a dangerous secret – the Golan Heights were purchased by Israel for $100 million. The check was received by both Hafez and Rifa'at al-Assad and deposited in their accounts in a Swiss bank.”

In return, Hafez Assad ordered the Syrian forces to withdraw immediately from the Golan Heights in the June 1967 war without firing a single shot and handing it over to Israel, Jame’ continued. The facts tell a different story.

“This story and my testimony of this event, has been kept secret for many years until 1999, when I alluded in the book ‘I Knew Sadat’ to the incident without revealing the full details.

“In 2006, when I was hosted by Almihwar channel, I provided the full details frankly, to the extent that even Moataz was stunned.

“The next day, Almihwar hosted Mr. Amin Gemayel, Lebanon’s former president, and the subject was raised with him. He supported my words. Then the Beirut-based Future channel tried to invite me to Beirut to discuss the subject, but I apologized, and refused.”

Syrian sources told Albawaba that Jame’s claim is “baseless" and part of a campaign to smear Assad.

#1  Given the inflation rate, this would be about $700m in 2011 dollars. Practically speaking, it would be a good deal for the grand-uncle, who might not have even mentioned it to his brother.

Hafez, his father, was born into a poor family, and was the first one of the family to attend high school. So his father's brother would have almost certainly been poor until his nephew, Hafez, came into power.

He might have convinced the Israelis that he had influence over his nephew, because it is unlikely that he had any personal stake in the Golan Heights.

#3  Ordinarily I would think so, but the Israelis in past have been downright weird when their "guilt gland" starts pumping. In this case, and many others, when they do something in a fair fight, afterwards they try and "make up" by paying for it with cash.

It is a Jewish cultural thing that makes sense to them, but is often interpreted by outsiders as adding insult to injury.

In some ways it is not unique to Jews. Muslims are just the opposite in that they believe offenses, even murderous ones, can be paid off if the family agrees. The US has paid out a heck of a lot of "blood money" deals in Iraq and Afghanistan, even when it was obviously fraud on the part of locals.

Paying $100m for the Golan Heights may actually be legit, even if the Israelis were conned by the guy. The Israelis didn't care, as long as they got title, as far as they were concerned.

Iran lawmaker: 'New IAEA report imaginary, immature'
[Iran Press TV] An Iranian politician has dismissed the latest report by the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the Iran's nuclear program, and described it as "imaginary and immature."

Member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Parviz Sorouri said on Monday that the report lacks legality, and that it does not deserve attention, Fars News Agency reported.

He termed the report issued by UN nuclear agency on Iran as "childish" and based on unfounded allegations.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano's latest report on Iran's nuclear activities was circulated among the 35 members of the Board of Governors on November 8, ahead of the seasonal meeting of the board, which is scheduled to be held in Vienna from November 17 to 18.

Iran dismissed the report as "unbalanced, unprofessional and prepared with political motivation and under political pressure by mostly the United States."

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, Iran says it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence indicating that Iran's civilian nuclear program has been diverted towards nuclear weapons production.

OIC Chief Warns Syrian Regime of 'Internationalization'
[An Nahar] The head of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation on Monday warned of a possible internationalization of the Syrian crisis if the regime does not comply with calls for reform and end the bloodshed.

If Syria "does not comply with the legitimate demands of the Syrian people and international calls by the OIC, the Arab League

and the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
, it will risk the internationalization of its crisis," Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said.

The secretary general said internationalizing Syria's crisis will "not be in anybody's interest and will have dangerous outcomes on the security in Syria and in other (OIC) member states."

The pan-Islamic 57-nation organization is ready to "support all efforts seeking to work out a peaceful solution to the crisis in order to ensure the security and stability of Syria as well as respond to the legitimate demands of the Syrian people," he said in a statement.

"In this context, the OIC general secretariat is conducting consultations to convene a meeting of the OIC executive committee at the ministerial level," the English-language statement added.

Ihsanoglu also condemned the attacks on foreign missions in Syria.

"I remind Syrian authorities that they are responsible of protecting foreign missions in their country based on international law."

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Monday apologized for attacks by angry pro-regime mobs on the embassies of La Belle France, Qatar, Soddy Arabia and Turkey.

Qatar and Soddy Arabia were among 18 Arab League countries that voted on Saturday to suspend Syria from the pan-Arab organization over its lethal crackdown on protests.

The United Nations says more than 3,500 people have been killed in the crackdown.

Arab League Plans to Send 500 Observers to Syria

on their mission and the rights of each side, the organization's chief Nabil al-Arabi said Monday.

The decision to send a 500-strong delegation follows a vote to suspend Damascus from the 22-member Arab bloc over its deadly crackdown on protests. It came a day after Syria said it would welcome such a mission.

"None of the delegates of Arab organizations tasked with protecting civilians will go to Syria until a clear memorandum of understanding is signed with the Syrian government spelling out the duties and rights of all the parties," Arabi told news hounds.

groups and Syrian opposition figures.

Arabi chaired a meeting of the groups at which it was agreed a 500-strong delegation made up of rights activists, media and military experts would head to Syria on a fact-finding mission to study measures to protect civilians.

Arab foreign ministers are due to organize the trip and set a date for the mission on Wednesday, on the sidelines of a meeting in Rabat, according to a League official.

A senior member of the Union of Arab doctors, Ibrahim al-Zaafarani, said Syrian authorities will be asked to sign a document providing the delegation "guarantees" for their protection and freedom of movement.

"We will go everywhere and write up reports on the conditions of civilians and means of protecting them, and we will submit the reports to the Arab foreign ministers," he added.

The Arab League on Saturday voted to suspend Syria from all Arab League activities over its failure to implement a deal to end the violence which has left around 3,500 dead since March, according to U.N. figures.

Arabi said he has received a letter from Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem calling for an urgent Arab summit to discuss the crisis.

Arab leaders have been informed of the request, the secretary general said, adding that the emergency summit can only be held if two-thirds of the bloc's members endorse the call.

Syria on Sunday said it would welcome the dispatch of an "Arab ministerial delegation accompanied by observers, civilian and military experts and Arab media," according to an official statement.

It said the delegation would be able to see for itself the situation on the ground "and supervise, in coordination with the Syrian government, the application of the Arab (peace) plan."

The plan to end violence in Syria was drawn up by Arab foreign ministers on November 2 and endorsed by Syria.

Under the deal, Syria was given 15 days to pull back its troops from the cities that were the focus of anti-government protests, release detainees, allow free movement for observers and media, and negotiate with the opposition.
