#1  "And popular political Weblog Daily Kos went so far as to call the incident 'repulsive.'"

At least we know what Kos considers repulsive. For now. >:-(

#2  I think the proper punishment is to make sure that there are plenty of people emailing, taking pictures with their phones, and working their CrackBerries during this reporter's and editor's funerals (or whatever the equivalent technologies will be at that time.)

Bonus points to anyone who will attempt to navigate "voice activated" customer service at the gravesite, too.

#1  Shared track is always a danger especially if signaling and safety communications aren't compatible. This is one of the big deficiencies in American versus European rail usage. Here we are 70-80% freight (and very efficient) whereas in Europe it is the inverse of 70-80% passenger (and not, contrary to belief, that efficient). The Swiss Railway's master technology plan is based on Union Pacific's designs.

#2  I'd be checking the signals for any tampering, FIRST THING.

Somehow a Muslim(Or other Idiot) with a can of black spray paint comes immediately to mind.

There was some of this in the 60's if I remember correctly, paint the red signal light lens black, leave, and wait for the news flash.

Sick people abound.

#3  I'm wrong, (My remembry is not what it used to be) I'm remembering the stories I heard of WW2 when the german railways were sabotaged.

1 Paint the signal so it can't be seen.
2 Remove spikes from the outside of the outside rail on a curve
3 Cut wooden railway trestles support timbers 3/4 way through and at an angle.
4 go home to supper. when there's trouble you're nowhere around.

Britain
Church of England--Ludicrous and Pointless
The Church of England will tomorrow officially apologise to Charles Darwin for misunderstanding his theory of evolution.

In a bizarre step, the Church will address its contrition directly to the Victorian scientist himself, even though he died 126 years ago.

But the move was greeted with derision last night, with Darwin’s great-great-grandson dismissing it as ‘pointless’ and other critics branding it ‘ludicrous’.

Church officials compared the apology to the late Pope John Paul II’s decision to say sorry for the Vatican’s 1633 trial of Galileo, the astronomer who appalled prelates by declaring that the earth revolved around the sun.

The officials said that senior bishops wanted to atone for the vilification their predecessors heaped on Darwin in the 1860s, when he put forward his theory that man was descended from apes.

The Church is also anxious to counter the view that its teaching is incompatible with science. It wants to distance itself from fundamentalist Christians, who believe in the Biblical account of the creation of the world in seven days.

An article to be posted on the Church’s website will say: ‘Charles Darwin, 200 years from your birth [in 1809], the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still.

‘But the struggle for your reputation is not over yet, and the problem is not just your religious opponents but those who falsely claim you in support of their own interests.’

The article has been written by the Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, the director of mission and public affairs of the Archbishops’ Council, the Church’s managing body, which is headed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.

#1  "Darwin in the 1860s, when he put forward his theory that man was descended from apes"

NO HE DID NOT.

Farkin' idiots.

However, the "leadership" of the CofE is obviously descended from loons. >:-(

#2  Absolutely corect he did NOT state "we are descended from Apes" he stated We ARE apes
There are five families of apes,
The Great apes, Gorillas, Orangutangs, Chimpanzes, and Humans. then there are the Simians (The only ones with tails) We did NOT descend FROM them, we are cousins.

Bomb call: 'Not a credible threat'
Queensland Police don't believe there is any threat to the public after a man threatened to place an explosive device on a bus somewhere in Brisbane. "A major incident team has been set up and the team is working on all the leads...but we do not believe this is a credible threat." Peter Crawford, State Crime Operations Command Acting Chief Superintendent said

The call was made to Crimestoppers late yesterday and came from somewhere in the Brisbane area. Police have been unable to release details of the call as the investigation is ongoing.

Police alerted Translink and Brisbane City council, who heightened security precautions. Police presence around transport areas is already boosted because of this weekend's events. "With the Valley Fiesta and the Bledisloe Cup game scheduled for the weekend, many people will be using bus services and we ask for their assistance in reporting any suspicious activity to police, Crime Stoppers, or public transport staff," Acting Deputy Commissioner Peter Barron said.

Under the Criminal code, a person who threatens to commit sabotage is guilty of a crime and faces a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment. Anyone who carries out an act of sabotage can be sentenced to 25 years.

In a statement early this morning, Acting Deputy Commissioner Peter Barron said that this is a timely reminder for people to be alert when in public places. "We call on people using buses to be vigilant and to report any suspicious or criminal activity," he said.

This incident is similar to one in late 2005, when public transport ground to a halt after a threat was phoned in, but was later proved false. The investigation continues.

Australian neighbourhood risks exploding, international experts called in
INTERNATIONAL experts have been called in to help authorities investigate leaking explosive methane gas at a Melbourne housing estate.
"Yecccchhhhh! What've you been feeding that cow?"
Environmental Protection Authority executive director of regional services, Bruce Dawson, said experts had been engaged from the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada and Italy due to the unique nature of the emergency. "This is a unique in Australia, we don't have any other situation like this," he said. "The scale of the issue requires that we get the best advice possible ensuring the council makes the right investment in fixing this problem."

Residents at Brookland Greens estate, in Cranbourne, have been advised a sealed tip next to the estate is leaching methane gas at levels high enough to cause explosions. They have been told their safest option is to move and have been warned methane levels may not be safe for a year.

Mr Dawson expected the panel of experts would be able to come back to it with possible solutions within two weeks. However, he cautioned that it would probably take a lot longer to eliminate the problem. "We'd be delighted if this work identified a strategy that was able to give effect to a quick solution, but realistically elimination of that gas moving into the estate is probably going to take at least 12 months," he said.

#1  First step: Install vents at the sealed dump to reduce internal pressure and control where the gases exit the sealed dump site. The gases can be burned or otherwise be used if enough gasses are available for power generation.

I wonder who got rich putting a subdivision next to or on a dump site with lots of organics in it.

It sounds like a poor job of sealing the site (of course quality control can be a huge factor) and the Engineering design probably sucks (if there was one).

Posted by: tipover || 09/13/2008 10:51 Comments || Top||

#2  Cap the dump and capture the methane. There are places in southern California that the methane is used to power engines for uses like pumping sewage.

Google "landfill methane" and learn all about it. EPA even has "Outreach Programs". I kid thee not.

Europe
Vegetarian Driver Suffers Pig Nightmare on Motorway
Police report that none of the pigs were wearing lipstick
The sight of pigs proved too much to bear for a vegetarian motorist. A vegetarian woman driving down a motorway in Germany was so traumatized at the sight of a truck loaded with pigs that she lost control of her vehicle and careered into another truck, which was also filled with pigs, police said.

"The woman found herself driving next to a large pig transport truck and the sight of the pitiful animals made her feel so sick that she jerked her steering wheel and started swerving," police in the western town of Gütersloh said in a statement released on Thursday.

"The result of her swerving was that the woman's van struck the side of another truck ... which was also loaded with live pigs. The woman suffered little more than a fright but we were unable to ascertain anything about the state of the pig's health," police said.

NWFP minister wants anti-polio strategy reviewed
The NWFP Minister for Health, Syed Zahir Ali Shah expressing concern over the growing number of polio cases in the province has underlined the need of revising polio eradication strategies and adopting effective communication tools to wipe out the dreadful disease from the province.

"There was need of revisiting polio eradication policy to control the dangerous disease which disables forever", he maintained. He went on to say that effective use of Fitawa (verdicts) was essential to encounter the negative propaganda against polio vaccine to educate people.

The Minister asked concerned authorities to prepare story books, dramas and stage shows about the issue to convince people about importance of polio vaccination.

The Minister suggested adopting carrot and stick policy to encourage efficient workers and discourage the negligent ones. He also assured to facilitate polio team at Torkham border. He reiterated support of the provincial government for polio eradication.
