Afghanistan
Baltimorean dies in Afghanistan
A 43-year-old Baltimore man who joined the Army Reserve just shy of the cutoff date for enlisting and was deployed to Afghanistan two weeks ago was killed there Friday in a roadside bombing, his family said.

Spc. Christopher James Coffland had spent his life counseling, coaching, traveling, and studying people and cultures, at one point pursuing anthropology graduate work that took him to Gabon, Africa. A month before he turned 42, the enlistment age limit, he signed up to become an Army intelligence specialist, relatives said.
"Desk jobs were not for him," said Sharon Kroupa, a cousin from Baltimore, speaking on behalf of the family. "Everything he did had to have meaning."

Coffland trained for more than a year for his mission in Afghanistan. He and two Marines were killed when the vehicle they were in exploded in the Sayed Abud region, where they were investigating another blast, relatives said. Coffland's body arrived Saturday night at Dover Air Force Base, according to base officials.

Coffland was a 1984 Gilman School graduate and earned an undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in 1988.
To translate the background, Gilman is one of the most exclusive schools in Baltimore. Christopher Coffland wasn't just a kid off the street...
His biography reads like that of several people combined: played professional football in Finland, coached football in Australia and lacrosse at Boys' Latin School of Maryland,
Boys' Latin likewise...
worked as a university counselor at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, tended bar in Baltimore, studied anthropology at Washington State University, lived with Pygmies in Africa.

When he was in Baltimore, he stayed with his sister, Lynn Coffland, and her husband in Homeland.
Homeland is one of the two most exclusive neighborhoods...
His parents, Dave and Toni Coffland, live on the Eastern Shore. "He never married and had a family, so he was part of everyone's family," Kroupa said.

Many of his Gilman friends drove in a caravan to Delaware to support the family after they received Coffland's body. Willie Franklin, who was among them, said Coffland was a "selfless person who wanted to serve his country. He knew the dangers involved. But he was a very courageous person. He was absolutely the kind of guy, who, when the going gets tough, you want him on your side."

Friends and relatives said Coffland had considered military service many times and had won an appointment to West Point but declined because of the six-year commitment. "He liked the idea of service. The idea of regiments and authority - not so much."
Friends and relatives said Coffland had considered military service many times and had won an appointment to West Point but declined because of the six-year commitment. "He liked the idea of service," Kroupa said. "The idea of regiments and authority - not so much."

About two years ago, Coffland talked with an Army Reserve recruiter who found his skills and interest in others cultures a good fit for military intelligence work. Family members said he graduated at the top of his group in boot camp and at Army intelligence school.

Franklin, his high school classmate, met Coffland for lunch in Washington last month, just before he was deployed. "He was confident and ready to go," Franklin said. "He seemed fearless."

For all his career changes, Kroupa aid, Coffland had "found a place where he could do something meaningful. If this defines how he'll be remembered, I think he would be proud of that."

In addition to his parents and sister, Lynn, a Baltimore designer, Coffland is survived by sisters Karen Bresnahan and Laurie Bartlett and a brother, David Coffland.

#1  This is the cost of the war against islamofascism from an American perspective. How many illiterate, goat fancying, woman abusing, 7th century fixated barbarians do we need to take in exchange for this good man's life and lost potential? I don't think the price is being set nearly high enough. I blame the Beltway mafia, and the blame extends back some ways before the current poseur took over at the White House, though it looks like he wants to make the deal even worse for America.

There is a price to pay for being a center of civilization. I can only hope we have tens of thousands of other young Americans like him, to turn the tide.

#3  When you read the bio's of the dead and wounded of our forces it is indeed impressive. What is even more impressive to me is all of those just like them who are still alive, in service and in harms way. If you can; support them, thank them and their families. And never forget what they do for us and the nation.

#4  Push the blame all the way back to Clinton and the "peace dividend". Clinton cut the military he inherited from Reagan and Bush I by a third or more. If we'd started the war with the military that existed under Bush I, the deployments wouldn't have been as rigorous, and we wouldn't have had to rob Peter (Afghanistan) to pay Paul (Iraq).

IEDs Move East
With no such abundance of leftover munitions, the Taliban had to fall back on a common local explosive; ammonium nitrate. This is a powdered fertilizer that, when mixed with diesel or fuel oil, can be exploded with a detonator. While only about 40 percent the power of the same weight of TNT, these fertilizer bombs are effective as roadside bombs. But they are bulkier and a slurry. Moreover, the fuel oil must be mixed thoroughly and in exactly the right proportion, otherwise the explosive effect is much less than expected. But the biggest problem is that if you can't get the ammonium nitrate, you have no explosives. So, U.S. and NATO forces are now on the search for ammonium nitrate. Even the supplies held by farmers are being taken. But the troops are paying twice what the farmers paid for it. Thus many farmers are voluntarily turning their ammonium nitrate (usually in 50 kg/110 pound bags) in for the instant profit. Other, non-explosive, fertilizers will be made available to the farmers, at equivalent cost to ammonium nitrate.
About time
Imports of ammonium nitrate into Afghanistan will be monitored.
Ban it. It's a war zone.
All this won't make it impossible for the terrorists to get the stuff, but it will be more difficult. This will result in fewer, and less powerful, bombs. But there's more. ...

French troops launch eastern Afghan offensive
Hundreds of French and Afghan troops pushed into a volatile valley east of the Afghan capital Sunday in an attempt to gain control of an area that has long been a haven for militants who launch quick attacks and then fade back into hillside villages.

The force of about 700 French and 100 Afghan soldiers launched the offensive into the Tagab valley before dawn, one part from the north and another from the south, according to Col. Francis Chanson, head of the French marine infantry regiment.

Just 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Kabul, the Tagab valley is seen as a launching pad for attacks in the capital. The area also needs to be secure for a planned road that would bypass the capital for moving supplies from neighboring Pakistan to the north of the country, Chanson said. Construction has already begun in one of the safer parts of eastern Kapisa province.

Taliban video shows different perspective of Wanat attack
July 2008 Incident Shown From Taliban Viewpoint: 'We Attacked From 4 Sides'

It was one of the deadliest attacks of the war for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The target: a remote U.S. outpost in Wanat, Nuristan. The date: July 13, 2008. ABC News has obtained a view of the battle unseen until now: the attack, filmed by the Taliban as they assaulted the base. The exclusive video of the attack was obtained via the NEFA Foundation.

The video begins by showing Taliban fighters walking on a mountain path. They appear relaxed and comfortable, walking through the area armed but unchallenged. They are heard chatting calmly on their radios.

More at source with video.
My observation: What idiot was in charge of placing a base in this valley? Talk about indefensible... If my boy had been one of those killed, after seeing this video I'd be out for blood.

#3  This Video is Taliban Propaganda. Of all the things that CNN COULD be showing the Public they CHOOSE to show Propaganda made specifically by the enemy. They Help the Enemy to spread the Democrat point of view to Uptail. Do you get the impression that CNN is an Uptail sort of place, or is it just me?

Do you get the impression that Obama himself is an Uptail? He seems really comfortable with bowing and kow-towing. And he seems just the man to kiss a Frenchman's butt.

The Military put nine men in a barrel in the mountains and said "Whack me!" It looked literally like fish in a barrel, what did it look like to you.?

Those men all died because their leaders were STUPID. Perhaps they were Democrats. They were Army, I assume. I cant believe that Marines would have actually gone down in that hole and put their butts up and waited to have them painted.

But then the US Army has pretty uniforms with danglies and foo-foo all over it. (You want to die, join the Army.)

Find the Officer who ordered those men in there. Send him to New Jersey to sell shoes. Maybe he can get a job stacking cans of vegetables at the Super Market.

Better yet, send him to Outer Whatzit himself and leave him for the next Taliban who comes along. STUPID people dont live long in Combat.
Dont you just love Officers who chew gum?

And lets see MORE Propaganda ( isnt that a good idea). Get CNN right on it.

And Obama? Well, ( you elected him) He's still taking his time with your sons ass.

How does it feel to watch CNN and help them make a buck off your dead baby? Is the head dead yet, get the widow on the set.

Journalists are not your friends. CNN will make some dinero playing in American intestines. Hey look the American guts draped around their Democratic Party neck have the appearance of a Moslem kaffiyeh.

Lets REMEMBER. Its not the Moslem's fault they kill people, its because we "insulted" them and their religion of Peace. Its OUR fault. They get "stressed" and CNN just wants to help them find a way to be happy. Are you easy to kill? Did you remember to wear your sweater?

Arabia
Saudi Forces Capture Yemeni Infiltrators
[Asharq al-Aswat] An authoritative Saudi military source has asserted to Asharq al-Awsat that Saudi forces discovered during their ongoing mopping up operations in the border strip, hideouts and hidden weapons caches for the infiltrators.

According to the source, one of the Saudi military positions in the border strip discovered that its communications were being jammed and this prompted its soldiers to carry out combing operations in the area, which resulted in the seizure of a group of infiltrators who had in their possession maps of the Saudi positions, listening and decoding devices, a laptop, in addition to various kinds of weapons.

The Saudi Air Force continued its raids on positions used by the infiltrators in the Razih, Al-Qalah, and Shada mountains in the border strip while army units continued their deployment in the area to monitor the infiltrators' movements who usually hide during the day and attempt their infiltrations again at night and this is the period when Saudi soldiers succeed in capturing them. The Saudi Air force is concentrating its air raids on the border strip villages after the Saudi forces monitored several small groups distributed among several villages and their attempt to use their empty buildings for sniping operations against Saudi soldiers during the night.

In the same context, the armed forces' commands issued orders to the remaining population in Al-Rahah, Al-Awmah, Umm al-Daraq, Salah, Al-Qusaybat, Umm al-Qubur, and several other villages near the borders with Yemen to evacuate them completely to protect their lives and because the area was already declared a military zone. A small number of these villages' inhabitants refused to leave and stayed in their houses but the recent orders forced them to leave and coordinate with their relatives, acquaintances, and official quarters to obtain residential apartments close to their villages.

In a related note, authoritative medical sources disclosed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the general hospital in Samitah in Jazan area received at dawn yesterday the bodies of two soldiers in addition to five casualties, one of which was in a critical condition and transferred to the King Fahd Central Hospital. The sources said the two dead soldiers are Ahmad Bin-Said al-Umari and Abdullah Kalandar al-Abdali. Military sources said these casualties and deaths were the result of an attack late on Friday night by elements which infiltrated the Jabal Dokhan area where the Saudi forces were carrying out constant combing operations of the border strip to prevent the infiltrators from entering Saudi territories from the Yemeni side.

Over 150 Saudi missiles fired at Yemeni Shias
Yemeni Shia fighters say they have been targeted with successive missile barrages by Saudi Arabia's fighter jets.

The Houthi fighters said the aircraft, which have recently joined armed campaign against the Shias, have advanced as far as five kilometers from the Saudi-Yemeni common border into the northwestern province of Sa'ada DPA reported.

The warplanes pounded the Kamama and Ghafira of Sa'ada's Haidan district as well as Dhahir al-Humair mountain on Saturday, the fighters said.

The German news agency quoted them as saying that other invaded areas in the province, al-Malahid, Shada and al-Hasama, had been hit by around 150 air-to-surface Sa'ada has been under large-scale aerial and artillery bombardments by government forces since early August.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) estimates 175,000 people to have been rendered homeless since 2004, when the government started attacking the Shia fighters accusing them of seeking to restore the Shia Zaidi imamate system, which was overthrown in a 1962 coup.

The fighters, on the other hand, claim the government has launched into a marginalization campaign against them under the aegis of Riyadh-backed Wahhabi extremists.

The Saudi military assistance started on November 4 on claims that Houthis had penetrated 'Saudi territory.' The fighters say the Saudis have started shelling their villages with illegal phosphorous bombs, which are capable of inflicting severe burns.

Saudi soldiers killed in Yemen fighting
Amid ongoing fighting in northern Yemen, at least two Saudi soldiers have been killed and five others have been wounded in border clashes with Houthi fighters.

Saudi military sources say the fighting took place in the Jebel Dukhan region, a mountainous border area, which had been used by Yemeni forces to launch attacks on the Shia fighters.

According to the Saudi paper Asharq Al-Awsat, the bodies of the two dead Saudi soldiers were moved to the town of Jizan on Friday.

The fighting between Houthi fighters and Yemeni forces started in August, when the government launched attacks on areas inhabited by Shia civilians and the Houthis.

The government accuses the fighters of violating the terms of an armistice by taking foreign visitors hostage in 2009.

The Houthis demand an end to social, economic and political 'discrimination' against Shias in Yemen as well as Saudi-backed attempts to spread Wahhabism -- a sect that preaches controversial and violent actions -- in the north. They also accuse the government of widespread corruption.

At least nine Saudis have been killed in clashes with Houthi fighters during the past ten days. The Saudi air force has been bombing Houthi positions and villages inside Yemen since November 4.

The fighting has displaced thousands of civilians, while tens of thousands of others remain at risk as winter approaches.

Great White North
Syrian carrying $880,000, Hezbollah ring, 9/11 videos, stopped at Canadian border
From US to Canada. Via JihadWatch
Don't cross the Canadian border with almost a million dollars that you fail to declare -- especially when you also have a Hezbollah ring and a Palestinian scarf in your possession.

Khaled Nawaya found that out the hard way when he was arrested Oct. 6 at the Douglas border crossing in Surrey, B.C., and had to spend a month in detention while being investigated as a security threat.

He was released on Thursday with a long list of conditions after a hearing before the federal government's Immigration Division member Lynda Mackie. He remains to have no status in Canada.

Mr. Nawaya, 34, had a visa to get into the country and, according to his lawyer, Phil Rankin, has spent 18 months going through all that's required to move to Canada from the U.S. as a landed immigrant.

"It's not like this started 30 days ago," said Mr. Rankin.

But the Saudi Arabian-born Syrian citizen, who is qualified as a flight instructor and had hoped to work in B.C., complicated his situation by not declaring the money.

That's against the law, although charges have not yet been laid as his case is still being investigated.

Mr. Nawaya was reluctant to speak to the media but finally declared: "I feel great. It's an experience for life. It's one of these things."

About $800,000 of Mr. Nawaya's stash, which is still in the Canadian government's possession, was in Canadian gold coins purchased by Mr. Nawaya's brother, who lives in Texas. There was another $70,000 in cash and about $10,000 in his pockets,

Further compounding the situation was his possession of a ring with the Hezbollah emblem. Mr. Rankin said the ring was one of two specially made by Mr. Nawaya's brother.

Hezbollah is a militant group fighting Israel's presence in Lebanon. Canada considers it a terrorist group.

His goods also included a Palestinian scarf and DVDs related to the 9/11 tragedy.

Mr. Rankin said the combination of possessions led to the notion Mr. Nawaya was a security threat.

Mr. Rankin said Mr. Nawaya has 90 days to prove the source of the money he was carrying, which he claims were from an insurance settlement and his wages.

The CBSA will then have to verify the claims and, according Mr. Rankin, there is a chance Mr. Nawaya could lose the money.

India-Pakistan
Twelve militants killed in Orakzai strikes
[Dawn] At least 12 militants were killed and a big ammunition depot was destroyed when jetfighters pounded hideouts of Taliban in lower Orakzai Agency on Saturday.

A huge quantity of ammunition and food and seven camps of Taliban were destroyed in the air strikes in Sultanzai, Feroze Khel, Bezote and Sam areas of Orakzai Agency. Five militants were also injured in the attack.

The jets destroyed food store established in the empty house of Sikh leader Gulab Singh in Sultanzai where several Taliban were also killed and injured. The Sikh family had left the area after Taliban imposed religious tax on them and upon their refusal occupied their houses and shops earlier this year.

Sources said that suicide bombers were entering Peshawar from Orakzai Agency via Khyber tribal region to target bazaars and sensitive army installations.

Similarly in heavy bombardment by the jetfighters two bunkers and underground ammunition dumps were also blown up in Bezote area of Orakzai Agency along Kohat district. Twelve militants were killed in the air strikes.

Officials said that five militants were arrested during search operation in Tora Warai in Hangu district, located at the border between Orakzai and Kurram Agency. They had been shifted to unknown place for interrogation, he said.

An official said that jets and helicopter gunships were carrying out strikes in the stronghold of Taliban in Orakzai Agency with short intervals to stop the movement of militants from Kurram Agency and Waziristan Agency.

Eyewitnesses said that Taliban had surrounded the areas, which came under attack. They were busy in removing debris to recover the injured and the dead buried under the rubble, they added. The injured were being shifted to Khyber Agency and their small health centre at the border area of Chappri Feroze Khel for treatment.

The air strikes on the positions of Taliban in Orakzai Agency left more than 20 militants dead and 22 injured besides destroying their seven camps during the last 24 hours.

Suicide bomber strikes Pakistans northwest
[Al Arabiya Latest] A suicide bomber blew up his explosives-filled car Saturday at a police checkpoint in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least 10 people, officials said.

"At least 11 people have been killed and 26 others wounded," Peshawar district administration chief Sahibzada Anis told AFP, adding that the bomber detonated when police asked him to stop for a search.

Three women, three children and five men were killed in the blast, he added.

Peshawar police chief Liaqat Ali Khan told AFP that two policemen were among the dead, in the second suicide bombing in the city in as many days.

Malik Jehangir, in charge of the checkpoint, told AFP policemen were checking vehicles when he saw a suspicious black car across the barrier and asked one of the policemen to go and check it.

"I saw that there was some argument between the driver and the policeman and suddenly a blast downed me with shrapnel piercing my shoulder," he said.

Another witness, Akbar Ali, said that he was riding a motorcycle and waiting in the queue at the checkpoint when he saw a scuffle between the bomber and the policeman.

"He was a young man, about 20 years old with small beard and wearing a white cap. When I noticed that his body was swollen, I left my bike there and ran away fearing he might be a bomber."

Ali said that seconds after a huge blast threw him to the ground.

Live television footage showed a huge cloud of smoke above the Pushta Khara neighborhood, on the outskirts of Peshawar, and the wreckage of several cars.

Pieces of the bomber's car littered the road. Several other vehicles were badly damaged, with one flipped onto its roof. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.

The army offensive in South Waziristan is aimed at rooting out Pakistani Taliban militants who stepped up their war on the security forces in 2007.

The United States, weighing options as it struggles to stabilize Afghanistan, says Pakistani action against militants in border enclaves is vital for its Afghan effort.

Iraq
Iraq's Kurdish forces arrest Qaeda suspect
[Al Arabiya Latest] The security services of Iraq's northern Kurdish area said Saturday they had arrested a key al-Qaeda figure allegedly behind a string of bomb attacks, in an operation backed by the U.S. military.

An official statement named the suspect as Muthanna Hani Nassar and said he had been a high-ranking official in the Baath party of executed dictator Saddam Hussein.

The U.S. army said separately that he was wanted in connection with major bombings in northern Iraq.

Nassar, 36, from Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province and hotbed of the once fierce Sunni insurgency against U.S. forces, was arrested in Sulaimaniyah city last weekend under a warrant issued in his home city, Kurdish intelligence said.

"The arrested terrorist is wanted by the Iraqi security forces and U.S. forces in Ramadi," said a statement issued by the Sulaimaniyah Asaish Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.

"He came to Sulaimaniyah on the pretext of work with a local company and he was intending to plan terrorist operations," it added, noting that documents found at the time of arrest "proved his involvement in terrorist attacks."

The security operation was conducted during the night November 8-9 and was backed by U.S. advisers.

"The arrested individual is suspected of being a former high ranking member of the Baath party and is allegedly a key figure in the al-Qaeda terrorist group," said a U.S. military statement.

"The suspect has been linked to major explosive attacks throughout northern Iraq and has been connected to financing terrorist cells."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Veto-wielding China says no to Iran sanctions
[Iran Press TV Latest] As US President Barack Obama plans to pay his first official visit to Beijing, China signals its opposition to new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

The Chinese government believes that negotiation sides should make efforts to settle issues regarding Iran's nuclear case through "political and diplomatic" talks, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told IRNA on Saturday.

He added that a diplomatic and permanent solution to Iran's nuclear issue will help bring about peace and stability to the Middle East.

As a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran has the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, said the spokesman.

Qin's remarks came one day ahead of a scheduled visit by President Obama to China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Obama is expected to discuss Iran's nuclear case with his Chinese counterpart.

Major world powers, spearheaded by the US and Israel, accuse Iran of efforts to develop a nuclear bomb and based on such allegations have threatened to impose more sanctions against the country.

This is while Obama, in a Thursday letter to the Congress, renewed US sanctions against Iran for another year.

Tehran, however, has denied seeking nuclear weapons and called for the removal of all weapons of mass destruction (WMD) from across the globe, including those held in the US.

Although the accusations have never been proven by any of the powers or the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) -- which has been monitoring the Iranian program extensively and inspecting its facilities since 2003 -- the United Nations Security Council has imposed three rounds of sanctions resolutions against Tehran.

#1  Is China hoping that Iran becomes a thorn in Russia's side?

#2  No, this is just a preliminary "fuck you" from the Chinese. Obama will have to bow and scrape to get them to change their minds, and I'm sure he will be delighted to do exactly that.

Iran student gets 8 yrs for protesting vote result
[Al Arabiya Latest] An Iranian court on Saturday sentenced a student who took part in protests following Iran's disputed election to eight years in prison as opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi condemened a government decision to put his brother-in-law, Shahpour Kazemi, on trial.

The June 12 vote triggered big street demonstrations by opposition supporters accusing the authorities of rigging the result, which gave President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term in charge.

The wife of the detainee, Abdullah Momeni, told website Mowjcamp, which backs defeated candidate Mousavi, that Momeni was sentenced to six years for taking part in post-election protests and two years for previous activities concerning national security.

Several other post-election detainees have received jail terms and three people have been sentenced to death, according to Iranian media.

Last week a court sentenced a man to seven years in jail and 74 lashes for post-election activities, Mowjcamp reported.

Meanwhile several newspapers quoted Tehran's prosecutor, who did not elaborate on the decision, that Mousavi's brother-in-law would stand trial.

Mousavi's wife, Zahra Rahnavard, said on July 23 that her brother was among hundreds rounded up by authorities during the unrest .

She also warned Iranian authorities not to publish any "forced confessions" from her brother.
