Afghanistan
Rockets Hit US Consulate Site in Afghan West
[Quqnoos] Four rockets were fired at a building leased as the site of a future US consulate in Herat city, police said.

The rockets hit the building, a former hotel, shattering windows, said Gen Ikramuddin Yawar, the regional Police Chief in western Afghansitan.

Nobody was hurt, but police later fired guns in the air to disperse crowds, he said.

The United States government acquired the building in 2009 for a consulate in the city, one of at least two it plans to open outside the capital Kabul as part of a "civilian surge" to increase its diplomatic presence.

It has not yet stationed diplomats at the site.

Herat, near the Iranian border, is a comparatively prosperous city that has seen little violence although militants operate in surrounding rural districts.

No groups, including the Taliban have made an immediate claim of responsibility for the rocket attacks.

Africa Horn
Somaliland forces say attack on mosque foiled
[Al Arabiya Latest] Security forces in Somalia's northern breakaway enclave of Somaliland said on Saturday they had foiled an attack on a mosque in Hargeisa where the imam had spoken out against militant suicide bombings.

Somaliland prides itself on its relative stability, unlike southern parts of the failed Horn of Africa state, where hardline rebels from the al Shabaab group control large swaths of territory and are battling a weak Western-backed government.

But al-Shabaab, which Washington says is al-Qaeda's proxy in Somalia, wants to extend its influence north into Somaliland and neighboring, semi-autonomous pro-government Puntland.

Mohamed Saqadi Dubbad, the commander of Somaliland's security forces, said six rockets and two mortar bombs were recovered from Imam Sheikh Aden Sira's mosque after a local woman saw a suspected bomber carrying the explosives in a jacket.

"She thought he had stolen what he was carrying and ran to grab him," Dubbad told reporters. "The man could not free himself, but he threatened the woman, saying: 'I will blow you up with me if you do not release me,' so she released him."

Imam Sira had been critical of suicide bombings carried out by al Shabaab insurgents in southern Somalia, and officials said he had received death threats from the militants.

Al-Shabaab hit Somaliland and Puntland with synchronized suicide blasts that killed at least 24 people in Oct. 2008.

A court in Hargeisa has sentenced five men to death in absentia for the bombings, which struck the Ethiopian embassy, the local president's office and a U.N. building. It said they were on the run in other parts of Somalia.

Somaliland, which has long sought international recognition as sovereign state, declared itself independent in 1991.

Anti-government fighters were targeting the Kuliyada base, where Burundian peacekeeping troops of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) are based, the Press TV correspondent in Mogadishu reported.

Several artillery shells landed in the Hodon district of south Mogadishu, killing at least three people and destroying one house, eyewitnesses said.

It has also been reported that eight people were injured near the Taleh area.

Bangladesh
Robber killed in crossfire
[Bangla Daily Star] An alleged robber was killed in a "shootout" between his cohorts and police yesterday morning at Rupnagar of Pallabi in the capital.
"It is the Rab! Bring forth the Shutter Gun and the Rounds of Bullet!"
The dead, Appel Mahmud Suman, 26, was identified by his brother Asaduzzaman Hira at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue. He was a resident of Rupnagar's Tin Shed Colony. Police, however, named him as Alamgir.
"Aye, he war a man o' many names! Another o' them wuz 'Harve'!"
Officer-in-Charge of Pallabi Police Station Iqbal Hossain told The Daily Star that following an attempt around 12:30midnight to break into a four-storey under-construction building at C block of Eastern Housing 2nd phase, locals chased a gang of five to six robbers. A team of patrol police joined in the chase.
"Halt! [BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!] Or we'll shoot!"
The robbers fired on the police while they were scaling the boundary wall of Botanical Garden to flee, the OC said. Sumon came in the line of fire when the police team fired back. He received two bullets in his legs
"Aaaiiieee! My kneecaps!"
while other gang members managed to flee.
"Michelin-soled flip-flops don't fail me now!"
The locals gave him a good beating after the incident, said the OC.
[THUMP! WHACK! THUMPETY THUMP!]
Suman was admitted to Pangu Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar where he died around 5:00am.
"He's dead, Jim!"
His body was later sent to DMCH morgue for autopsy.
"Dr. Quincy! Pick up the white courtesy phone!"
Security guard of the building Faruk Hossain gave statements that contradict the description of the incident given by the police.
"Nope. Nope. Dat wudn't whut happened..."
He told The Daily Star that he caught Sumon red-handed while he attempted to steal inside the building, and handed him over to the patrol police around 12:30am. "After 20 minutes, I heard sounds of firing," Faruk added.
"You're not saying the Rab done him in?"
"Well... I..."
"The Rab."
"I guess not. I dunno whut happened. I wudn't even there."

Raqibul Islam, a construction labour of the building, said the labours were sleeping on the first floor when suddenly he woke up to see a man trying to take away his mobile phone. While he screamed,
"Aaaiiieee! My phone!"
the security guard came running and caught the man.
"Gotcha!"
"Lemme go! Lemme go!"

Morgue sources said apart from bullet injuries, the body bore several marks of torture.
"Hmmm... What do you make of this, Sam?"
"Looks like a hockey stick mark...?"
"And this?"
"Definitely the puck. But how'd it get in there?"

Sumon's brother Hira said Sumon disappeared on Friday night after he went out with some of his friends.
"Hang on, youse guys! I gotta pick up a cell phone!"

Britain
London police storm Dubai-bound plane, 3 held
[Al Arabiya Latest] Armed officers stormed a plane at London's Heathrow airport as it was about to depart for Dubai and arrested three men on suspicion of making a bomb threat, police said Saturday.

The Emirates flight was preparing to take off late Friday when a "verbal threat" was made to staff, London's Metropolitan Police Service said.

"Police were alerted and armed officers boarded the plane," a police statement said.

"Three men aged 58, 48 and 36 were arrested and are now in police custody. They have been arrested on suspicion of making a bomb threat."

Police were searching the aircraft but media reported no harmful substances were believed to have been found on the plane, which had 331 passengers on board.

Sky News television reported that the men arrested were English and appeared to be drunk.

It broadcast a grainy photograph purportedly taken inside the aircraft, showing police in black overalls, and a passenger said officers brandishing guns in body armor burst onto the plane and hauled the suspects away.

Passenger Cameron McLean, who Sky said supplied them with the photograph, told the broadcaster: "Some special police just came on the plane and arrested these two guys a few rows in front of me.

"The police just swarmed the guy and then rushed him out. I think he was a white male," he said.

The passenger added there were about five armed officers who were wearing helmets, body armor and carrying what appeared to be automatic weapons.

The security scare came after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, allegedly tried to detonate a device stitched into his underwear on a flight from Amsterdam as it landed in the United States on December 25.

In a court in Detroit on Friday, he pleaded not guilty to six charges related to the incident, which has led to security being stepped at airports worldwide.

Another five killed in yet another N. Wazoo dronezap
[The News (Pak) Top Stories] Five more people were killed and six others sustained injuries in yet another US drone attack on a remote village in Dattakhel Tehsil in the troubled North Waziristan tribal region on Saturday night.
Tusk tusk. Oh, the humanity. The heart [urp!] burns bleeds.
Tribal sources said a pilotless CIA-operated spy plane fired two missiles that struck a house at Ismailkhel village near the border with Afghanistan's Paktika province. They said the house was frequently visited by militants and those killed were suspected to be fighters affiliated with North Waziristan Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

Four among the eight people killed in the previous US drone attack on Friday night were Arabs. Four others were local villagers, who had invited the 'guests' to their home.
They said villagers and the Taliban started the rescue work and retrieved five mutilated bodies of suspected militants from the rubble of the building, which was flattened in the attack. According to sources, two rooms and a car were damaged in the missile strikes. Six other people who sustained injuries were sent to hospitals in Dattakhel and Miramshah.

Dattakhel Tehsil, which is about 50 kilometres from North Waziristan's main town Miramshah, is a stronghold of the Taliban, led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

A government official based in Miramshah confirmed the drone attack on the border village of Ismailkhel. Wishing not to be named, he said the drone hit a hideout of the local militants. He also claimed that four among the eight people killed in the previous US drone attack on Pelalai hamlet of Tappi village in Mirali on Friday night were Arabs. Four others, he said, were local villagers, who had invited the 'guests' to their home.

Let 'em keep thinking that; while the goat-buggers are shivering in their mudwalled ghettos, the drone pilots are ensconsed in relatively plush digs in A LOCATION TO BE NAMED LATER
When the X-47 gets into service, that will truly be pilotless, in that the software will learn what targets to hit. The aircraft will also be completely autotomous for the rest of the flight regime.

CIA bomber shown on TV with Hakimullah Mehsud
[Dawn] A Pakistan television station showed on Saturday what it said was the suicide bomber double agent who killed CIA agents in Afghanistan sitting with the Pakistani Taliban leader, and reported he shared US and Jordanian state secrets with militants.
The Pak Taliban are operated by al-Qaeda. I'm not sure whether they're a wholly owned subsidiary, like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, but I suspect they are.
Private television station AAJ showed a video of the bomber, speaking in English but hardly audible, with Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud beside him. 'Jordanian and American intelligence had offered him millions of dollars in exchange for spying on the mujahideen (holy warriors). But he rejected wealth and joined the mujahideen,' said AAJ of Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, a Jordanian.

The channel quoted him by his online persona Abu Dujana al-Khorasani as saying that he 'shared all secrets of Jordanian and American intelligence with his fellow (militants)'.

If the video is authentic, it points to huge intelligence failures for the United States and its key Middle East ally Jordan.

Pakistan would also feel the heat. It is struggling against Mehsud's growing insurgency while facing relentless US pressure to eliminate militant groups that cross its borders to fight in Afghanistan.

Official sources said that he came to Pakistan with a fake name and later he traveled to tribal areas with his local Taliban guide from where he reportedly entered Afghanistan's Paktia province.

Iraq
Iraq confiscates arms in security crackdown
[Al Arabiya Latest] Security forces confiscated hundreds of rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition and other military gear in a crackdown on private security contractors in Iraq, officials said on Saturday.

Police raided three locations in Baghdad on Friday, a week after Iraqi authorities were incensed by a U.S. judge's decision to throw out charges against five Blackwater Worldwide security guards accused of killing over a dozen Iraqi civilians in 2007.

Officials said they are targeting private security companies that are no longer legally licensed to operate in Iraq.

"All those companies with their work permits expired are not allowed to move one meter inside Baghdad, or own one piece of weaponry," Baghdad security spokesman Qassim al-Moussawi said.

He would not reveal how many unlicensed contractors were on the target list, or their names.

Authorities raided the headquarters of a foreign security contractor, whose name could not be immediately confirmed, on Friday night and confiscated 20,000 rounds of ammunition and more than 300 armored shields.

In another location they found 400 rifles, helmets, radio devices and more than 35 vehicles believed to belong to the same company, officials said. No one was arrested.

Private foreign security contractors played a major role in Iraq following the U.S. invasion in 2003, in many cases hired by the United States to guard diplomats and other officials. Iraqis accused them of running roughshod over locals.

For a time, the foreign guards enjoyed immunity from prosecution. That ended with a bilateral agreement that took effect in 2009.

The Iraqi government called unacceptable the U.S. court's Dec. 31 dismissal of charges against five Blackwater guards accused of shooting indiscriminately in a Baghdad traffic circle, and said it is taking its own legal steps against the company, now known as Xe Services.

Major General Hussein Kamal, Iraq's deputy interior minister, denied that the Baghdad crackdown was a reprisal for the Blackwater case. He said the ministry had given a group of security firms ample warning to renew their permits. "We have closed some of the companies and confiscated their weapons and vehicles," he said, adding, "We are not reacting to the (Blackwater) judge's decision."
Liar. I think the gentleman may not be quite clear on his subconscious motivations.

#3  Confiscation of 20,000 rounds? Not much. And what are 300 armored shields? Is this body armor/ballistic vests? There must be millions of arms in Iraq left over from the days of Saddam. There must be a jillion AK-47s kept by Iraqi families for wedding ceremonies. Just PO'd about the U.S. judge's ruling and trying to save face?

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IAF kills 3 terrorists in Gaza preparing to fire mortar
An Israeli Air Force craft attacked a terror cell preparing to fire projectiles from the southern Gaza Strip into Israel on Sunday evening, the IDF said in a statement.

The intelligence on the cell was gleaned by cooperation between the military and the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).

The IDF said a direct hit was identified. Three Palestinian terrorists were killed in the operation and five were wounded. The dead Palestinians were identified as senior Islamic Jihad operatives. One of them, the IDF said, was Abed Abu Nizal, a senior field commander in the terror group.
I wonder if that's legal under tranzi yapping international law? After all, can we be sure that they were really preparing to fire a mortar?

One seriously injured by Israeli tank fire in central Gaza
This is a tank. Note the sloping, thickly armored glacis and the revolving turret. The main gun is usually rifled and it's designed for direct fire. Unlike artillery, most tanks have stabilization systems that allow them to fire on the move.
[Ma'an] A Palestinian was seriously injured in a Israeli artillery shelling on farmlands east of the Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp in the central Gaza Strip on Saturday. Muawiyah Hassanein, head of ambulance and emergency department in the ministry of health in Gaza, said Israeli tanks deployed on the borders shelled the agricultural area east of the camp," and confirmed that one man was seriously injured. An Israeli military spokesman said he knew of no artillery fire in the area.
Gazan rockets misfired again? How mortifying for the rocketeers.
I might also point out that tanks aren't artillery. You wouldn't use tanks to shell an area. They're used for other tanks or for direct fire on fortifications. I suppose the confusion is understandable enough, since self-propelled artillery usually moves on tracks and has a big gun sticking out the front, which'd make it look something like a tank to a civilian.
The key difference I see between the two photos is that the howitzer has a much bigger gun thingy. This is probably why the Army never hired me.
This is artillery, to whit, an M109A3 self-propelled howitzer. The turret sits to the rear of the chassis and the armor is much lighter than that on a tank, designed to protect against shrapnel and maybe small arms fire. Some flavors don't even have turrets. On this particular model there is a brace to keep the cannon from flopping around when the vehicle's moving. In firing position the cannon's elevated way, way up, rather than pointing forward, though there have been occasions when it's been used in direct fire. They weren't pleasant occasions.
The incident is the latest in an escalating string of cross-border violence, with two projectiles reportedly launched from the Gaza Strip and landing in southern Israel Saturday morning.
So if it wasn't the Israelis and two projectiles were reportedly launched from the Gaza strip, who do you suppose might have maimed the innocent Paleofarmer?
Friday saw four airstrikes hit locations across the besieged coastal area, reportedly in retaliation for a series of mortar shell barrages launched by the An-Nasser Salah Ad-Din Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees. The strikes killed three and injured two.
Betcha the aircraft were Israeli...
Could have been Ruritanian ...
The PRC encouraged all resistance factions to step up efforts against Israeli targets, while the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine accused Israel of using limited incursions, airstrikes and targeted assassinations as mechanisms to lure resistance fighters into a new cycle of violence.
I'm not sure I follow that logic. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it doesn't even look like logic.
Perhaps it made more sense in the original Arabic.

Egypt bans all Gaza-bound relief convoys
[Iran Press TV Latest] Egypt has banned all Gaza-bound relief convoys from using its territory after accusing members of the Viva Palestina convoy of committing "criminal" acts in the country.
They had just such a ducky time with Gorgeous George and his merry band...
"Egypt will no longer allow convoys, regardless of their origin or who is organizing them, to cross its territory," Egyptian Foreign Minister Abul Gheit was quoted by government newspaper Al-Ahram as saying, the AFP news agency reported. "Members of the [Viva Palestina] convoy committed hostile acts, even criminal ones, on Egyptian territory," he added.

Earlier in the week, the Egyptian riot police injured 55 people in the port of El-Arish during clashes with Viva Palestina activists. The scuffles broke out after Egypt said it would not allow 59 Viva Palestina humanitarian assistance trucks to enter Gaza.

The Egyptian authorities then proceeded to deport the head of the group, British MP George Galloway.

"I am sorry to say that Egypt is implicated in this siege. That's the reason of their revenge on me," Galloway told Press TV upon his arrival in London, referring to the blockade Israeli has imposed on Gaza for over two years.

Cairo has also sealed the Rafah border crossing -- the Gaza Strip's only border that bypasses Israel -- claiming that the border post is an Egyptian-Israeli crossing and should not be used without Tel Aviv's permission.

Despite restrictions imposed by the authorities, the Viva Palestina convoy of around 200 vehicles managed to break the Israeli siege of Gaza on Wednesday.

#1  This seems to be the final resolution of the Galloway efforts. No more convoys through Egypt. Furthermore, Galloway is persona no grata. Gaza is going to have to wait a long time before they get another free ride from someone out to "break the siege."

And there will be ANOTHER Gaza War eventually. (You dont see Peace breaking out, do you?) The goombahs are too stupid to make any deals...and they just dont learn. Too bad for them.

There will come a day when the Palestinians are going where Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse went. And Arafat will be buried in a deadend junkyard on an unmarked dirt road. Its only a matter of time.

Hamas doesnt have a long term future and Hizbollah is on borrowed time. Iran isnt doing TOO well itself. You see them in the long haul?

While the French Army is nowhere to be seen even if they are doing a bang up job "keeping the peace" in Lebanon. Dont you wish you were Fwench?
Has Fwench Honor ALWAYS been like it is?

It may be bad with Skinny in the Oval Office. (But at least we arent all as Fwench as Massachusetts and California) The United States gets the finger everywhere Skinny bows.
It must be great being the Leader of the Free World. Teleprompters for All. The Democratic Part has come a long way from Truman.

And an open and honest Leadership.... Democratic Party transparency and have some Bacon.
Buy me.

Bush is beginning to look like a Statesman among these PC midgets. What corruption? Do you smell something? Buy some Fwench perfume if you dont like the aroma you are getting from our really respected present leaders.
The American people elected these paragons. They DESERVE what they are getting.

You elected him. He is the Messiah, right?
Right?

#4  I'm just surprised some of the more rabid anti-Juice nutbags haven't accused the obviously Zionist-controlled Egyptian government of obstructing their very peaceful mission.

#5  #1:
The only thing French in California is the bread and if you refer to the American people as "they" I can assume you are not an American and therefore your opinion of the "messiah" is as insightful as the same people you condemn. Congratulations! You and the Palestinians have finally found common ground... you both hate our President.

#7  Yeah, but Joe is

1) Reasonably humorous

2) Doesn't write fiction

3) Has the 'resume' to back himself up.

#9  Joe doles out the little pieces of the truth he thinks we can handle without going insane. He's the one man protecting us from the cthonic reality beyond our imaginings.

#10  "teleprompters for all" - Angleton

That shining phrase alone justifies the rant. Always there are nuggets of gold to be found amid A's dross.
