Taliban Mujahideen Captured Weapons From Us Base

#1  Even though this was recently posted, it appears to be video of captured weapons & a base from the SNAFU operations performed in October '09 in Kamdesh.

Anyone confirm?

Officers that didn't order bombing of these abandoned bases have blood on their hands and deserve to be shot. My boy had just deployed to Iraq at that time. I can't describe the anger from watching this and related videos...

Kabul suicide car bombing targets Nato troops
A suicide car bomb that targeted a Nato convoy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has killed at least 19 people, including six foreign soldiers.

The US military said that five of those were American. More than 50 people - mostly Afghan civilians - were hurt.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the rush-hour attack in the west of the city, close to the parliament.

It is the deadliest attack on foreign forces in the heavily guarded capital since a Taliban assault last September.

Despite tight security, the suicide bomber managed to drive into the city in a car laden with explosives.

The Isaf (Nato-led) convoy was attacked on the Darulaman road. An Isaf spokesman confirmed that six of its soldiers were killed. Five were from the US, and unconfirmed reports say the sixth soldier was Canadian.

Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen "strongly" condemned the attack, but said the alliance remained "committed to its mission to protect the Afghan people and to strengthen Afghanistan's ability to resist terrorism".

Five military vehicles were damaged and more than a dozen civilian vehicles, including a bus, were also caught in the blast.

#1  FYI, the last name "Nimmo" is Scottish, originating in French Latin in the 14th Century. It is a 'founding father'-era name. "Caleb" has had a resurgence, becoming popular in about the 1980s, after falling off the charts in the 1920s.

Egypt arrests 16 Palestinian Islamic Jihadis
The Qatar-based al-Jazeera reported that the Egyptian Security Services arrested 16 members of Islamic Jihad at the Rafah Terminal, while heading back to the Gaza Strip after receiving medical treatment in Syria.

A senior Islamic Jihad official told al-Jazeera that the Egyptian authorities moved the detainees to a security prison, and added that he fears they would be tortured the same way Egypt previously tortured six members of the Islamic Jihad, releasing them after 42 days of detention. He stated that there are more than 31 Islamic Jihad members detained by Egypt, among them a number of wounded Palestinians.

Egypt is also holding captive several Palestinian fighters, including Ayman Nofal, a senior leader of the al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement.

During a recent interview with al-Jazeera, Ramadan Shallah, secretary-general of the Islamic Jihad, accused Egypt's security services of arresting and torturing Palestinian fighters and residents who were wounded during the Israeli war on Gaza.

Nafith Azzam member of the Political Bureau of the Islamic Jihad, said that his movement is interested in strengthening its relation with Egypt and added that he is sure the current situation will end.

In October of 2009, Yousef Abu Zuhri, the brother of Hamas' Spokesperson, Sami Abu Zuhri, died in an Egyptian prison. Hamas said that Yousef was tortured to death and the family of Abu Zuhri filed a lawsuit against Egypt.
They must have been watching too many America films and television shows. That's the only reason I can think of that they wouldn't realize they don't have American civil rights in other countries, especially more or less totalitarian regimes.

More Mexican Mayhem
Six Die, Seven Wounded in Violence in Northern Mexico

Six people were killed and seven more were wounded including a police agent, and an abduction in ongoing violence in northern Mexican states.
  • Two more young people were shot to death and four were wounded in violence Sunday evening in the Tajito district of Torreón, Coahuila, Mexican news reports say. The violence was in addition to the massacre which took place at a bar in Torreón earlier that day.

An emergency call came in to emergency services at about 1830 hrs concerning a shooting involving a gang of armed men. Authorities said the group were purchasing beer when the armed men attacked them and then fled the scene.

  • Three young people were attacked and wounded by assailants using AK-47s early Monday morning, Mexican press reports indicate. The attack took place at 0015 hrs at Villas de Real district of Juarez on Mina San Francisco street when armed assailants aboard a Jeep Cherokee shot the trio.

All three were less than 23 years old, according to press accounts.

  • An unidentified man was kidnapped in a grocery store parking lot in Juarez this morning. The abduction took place in the parking lot of Alsup supermarket at the corner of Vallarta and Zaragoza streets in Juarez.

Witnesses say three men in hoods emerged from a running Chevrolet Tahoe, threatened the victim with weapons and then forced him into the Tahoe before speeding away. The victim's wife was shopping during the abduction, and returned to find patrol cars surrounding her vehicle.

  • A man was found shot to death in the municipality of Rosales, Chihuahua Monday, say Mexican press accounts. Víctor Hugo Derma Olivas, 30, was found shot twice with a .40 caliber weapon. Investigators said he was shot once in the head and in the abdomen.

Olivas was found on a dirt road leading to Agua Nueva, Chihuahua.

  • Two men were found shot to death shortly after their release from a police detention facility in Parral, Chihuahua early Sunday morning, published Mexican reports say. Guillermo Guadalupe Cortés Martínez, 26, and Alberto Cortes López, 27, were neighbors in the Talleres district of Parral, Chihuahua.

The two men were apparently briefly detained earlier for disorderly conduct and public drunk, as well as other offenses. According to the report, shortly after their release, they were confronted by a gang of armed men who attacked the two with AK-47s. Both men died at the scene.

  • A man identified as a federal agent was assassinated Saturday evening in the Manuel Valdés district of Juarez near the intersection of Henequén and Justo Sierra streets.

According to witnesses, the agent has enquired about a vehicle blocking traffic, when the driver aimed a weapon at the agent and fired. Another suspect in a second vehicle also shot the agent. Additional federal agents arrived at the scene by helicopter and followed one of the shooter's vehicles and attempted to stop the suspects by shooting at them from the helo.

The name of the agent has yet to be released.

#4  just doing the jobs....:

An illegal immigrant who was sought on a felony murder warrant for a drive-by shooting Sunday in San Jose was arrested Monday while trying to leave the country at the San Ysidro border checkpoint, authorities said.

Francisco Rodriguez-Adame, 24, was arrested by federal officers about 11:40 a.m. and later turned over to San Jose police.

U.S. Customs officers were making checks on vehicles heading into Mexico on southbound Interstate 5 when they came across Rodriguez-Adame, one of four men riding in a Honda Civic.

Another passenger, a 20-year-old with a criminal history, also was determined to be an illegal immigrant. He was turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.

The two other men, both U.S. citizens, were allowed to enter Mexico.

Rodriguez-Adame is a suspect in a shooting that occurred about 3 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a large San Jose strip mall, said Dirk Parsons, spokesman for the San Jose Police Department.

Witnesses said the victim, Jorge Soto, 20, was walking through the lot when a vehicle drove by slowly. One shot was fired and Soto fell to the ground. The vehicle sped off. Soto was later declared dead at the scene.

The shooting was still being investigated. Parsons said it was not yet known if it was gang-related. He said that Rodriguez-Adame is from the state of Durango in Mexico.

German synagogue attacked by arsonists
A synagogue in the German city of Worms was attacked by arsonists on Monday.

The attackers left a note linking their torching of the synagogue with the Israel-Palestinian conflict, according to a report in the regional paper Wiesebadner Kurier. German police found eight copies of a note written in "awkward" German, claiming responsibility for setting the place blaze.

"So long as you do not give the Palestinians peace, we are not going to give you peace," stated the note.

Public prosecutor Klaus-Peter Mieth said there was still an open question regarding the authenticity of the note. However, Levi Salomon, who heads a task force combating anti-Semitism for the 12,000-member Berlin Jewish community, told The Jerusalem Post on Monday that he could not rule out that German Palestinians had set the synagogue afire.

While there are no current statistics on the rise of Islamic anti-Semitism in Germany, according to Salomon, he has observed an increase in expressions of Muslim hatred of Jews. Observers of the attack said they believe the perpetrators could have been extreme leftists, neo-Nazis or radical Islamists. What unites these groups, they said, is their common hatred of Israel.

"We are a small minority in Germany and we have such a history," Stella Schindler-Siegreich, the head of the Jewish community in Mainz, told the Kurier after traveling to Worms.

Germans destroyed the synagogue in Worms in 1938 during the Nazi period and the place of worship was rebuilt in 1961. Authorities said there was no serious damage to the Synagogue.

In sharp contrast to many Jewish institutions and synagogues in Germany, the Worms synagogue does not have a police presence or barricades protecting the building, according to Schindler-Siegreich. The synagogue dates back to the year 1034.
Strange. In Frankfurt even the Jewish day school had a 24/7 police guard back in the 1990s, paid for by the state. Even here in the American Midwest, since 9/11/01 our synagogue has had a police presence for the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, as well as traffic control. Of course, the congregation pays that expense, not the government.

Times Square Bomb Suspect Had Multiple Targets
Alleged Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad had multiple targets in the New York area, and was planning to wreak havoc in four other locations if his first, botched attack had been successful, a source told MyFoxNY.com

Shahzad, who authorities say left a car bomb in Times Square on May 1, had also hatched plots against other high-profile targets in and around New York City: Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal, the World Financial Center — just across from Ground Zero — and the Connecticut-based defense contractor Sikorsky.

A source told MyFoxNY that Shahzad picked out the exact date and time to maximize the effect of the bomb by watching streaming videos online from Times Square. Shahzad determined that the landmark attraction is busiest on Saturday nights at 6:30 p.m., and planned an alternate date for Saturday, May 8.

Shahzad, 30, slowly bought the ingredients for his makeshift bomb over an extended period of time because his connections in a bomb-making training camp in Pakistan taught him to avoid raising suspicions, the source said.

Shahzad purchased a green Nissan Pathfinder on Craigslist and packed the vehicle with fertilizer, gasoline, methane and fireworks, authorities say, though the homemade bomb failed to explode.

Shahzad also bought a second vehicle through Craigslist — a black Isuzu rodeo — from a mechanic in Stratford, Conn., who was questioned and cleared by the FBI, and is not a suspect, the source told MyFoxNY.

Sikorsky, the defense contractor allegedly targeted by Shahzad, is headquartered in Stratford and manufacturers helicopters for the U.S. military. The company also has facilities in Shelton and Bridgeport — the same two cities where Shahzad has lived.

Congress Says U.S. Repeated 9/11 Failures in Christmas Day Bombing Plot
Will update as more becomes available -- and no surprises here

Congressional investigators say some of the same intelligence failures that led to the 9/11 attacks also allowed a man to slip on board a U.S.-bound jetliner with a bomb on Christmas.

The Obama administration has said that the nearly catastrophic bombing was not a failure to collect and share intelligence like before the Sept. 11 attacks. Rather, it said it was a failure to understand that intelligence.

The Senate Intelligence Committee disagrees. A 16-page summary of its investigation says some of the same systemic problems remain in place nearly a decade after the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.

No bail for man accused of Qaeda computer aid
A federal magistrate judge in Manhattan refused on Monday to grant bail to a former Brooklyn resident charged with conspiring to provide Al Qaeda with computer advice and other assistance, finding that the man was dangerous and might flee. The ruling came after prosecutors said the defendant, Sabirhan Hasanoff, a dual citizen of the United States and Australia, had swore an oath of allegiance to Al Qaeda and conspired to provide the group with money and software for encrypted communications over the Internet.

Mr. Hasanoff, who had recently worked in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, had also tried unsuccessfully to travel to Iraq “hoping to be able to fight in the jihad,' a federal prosecutor, John P. Cronan, told the judge. “He knew full well of the objectives of Al Qaeda,' Mr. Cronan said. “He embraced its extremist ideology and radical goals. And when given the opportunity, he jumped at the chance of joining the organization.'

When the charges against Mr. Hasanoff and a co-defendant were announced last month, Preet Bharara, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, said the two men had “conspired to modernize Al Qaeda' with computer systems expertise and other services.

On Monday, the prosecutor, Mr. Cronan, cited what he called the men's technological sophistication, wealth and “ability to move money easily' as some of the “many reasons why these two individuals were so attractive to Al Qaeda.' He noted that Mr. Hasanoff owned a house worth about $750,000. Mr. Hasanoff has an accounting degree from Baruch College, and most recently worked as a group chief financial officer for a company in Dubai, his lawyer, Anthony L. Ricco, said in court.

Mr. Cronan, said the evidence against Mr. Hasanoff included a government witness “who can tell the entire story' and significant corroboration.

Mr. Hasanoff pleaded not guilty; if convicted, he could face a prison sentence of 15 years. His lawyer, Mr. Ricco, asked the judge, James C. Francis IV, to release his client on $2 million bond and a condition of home detention.

“Whatever value for the sake of argument that he is to Al Qaeda because he can travel and because he has financial resources, that no longer exists,' Mr. Ricco said.

He said 15 people, all professionals, were willing to sign the bond on his client's behalf. But Judge Francis refused to release Mr. Hasanoff, citing his computer skills and financial acumen. He also said that Mr. Hasanoff “may be motivated by strong ideological considerations,' which might give him incentive to flee. “The evidence against the defendant appears to be relatively strong,' the judge said.

After the proceeding, Mr. Ricco said he planned to appeal the ruling to a federal district judge. “This was not unexpected,' he said. “We haven't seen a defendant like him in the Southern District before, charged with providing material assistance. He's a successful businessman.'

Both Mr. Hasanoff and his co-defendant, whom prosecutors identified as Wesam El-Hanafi, were arrested in Dubai last month and brought back to the United States to face charges.

According to this article:

Cronan said Hasanoff performed "real and tangible work" for Al Qaeda, tasks which allegedly included buying digital watches. "Casio digital watches are very valued by Al Qaeda," Cronan said. "They are part of Al Qaeda's tradecraft because they can be used as timing devices."

Hasanoff, a father of two, allegedly used a code while conversing online with El-Hanafi, which included "safari" as a substitute for jihad and "hospitalized" as a term for being in prison.

Indian Naxal rebels blow up bus, kill 40
Indian extreme left-wing Naxal rebels killed at least 40 people Monday by blowing up a bus with a home-made bomb in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, said police. Among the dead were several Special Police Officers (SPOs), civilians who were helping government forces fighting the rebels, and other plain civilians. The attack took place in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, which saw in early April a bloody massacre of 76 security personnel by the rebels.

Police said the rebels used Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at around 4:45 p.m. local time. The IED was planted on a metal road and detonated by the Maoists using remote control device, said police.

Indian Home Ministry, while condemning the attack, said no formal Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were on the bus.

This might signal the shifting of tactics by the rebels to target civilians who support government action against the insurgency, said a Home Ministry official on condition of anonymity.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh said after the attack that the government should fight "with full strength and vigor" the rebels from now.

India Maoist rebels kill many in bus attack
Maoist rebels have attacked a bus in central India and killed at least 20 people, including civilians and police officers, according to officials.

The rebels apparently detonated a mine under the bus in Chhattisgarh state's Dantewada district. Some reports put the death toll at much higher than 20.

Dantewada was the scene of the rebels' deadliest attack last month, when 76 people were killed.

In the latest attack, the rebels are said to have destroyed the front of the bus with a landmine.

"About 40 people were travelling on the bus and at least 20 police personnel and a couple of civilians have been killed in a landmine blast," local official SR Kalluri told the AFP news agency. He said the officers were special police officers, who are recruited from the civilian population to act as pro-government militias, helping security forces in anti-Maoist operations.

Iraq
Detained militant in Iraq details World Cup plot
An alleged al-Qaida militant detained in Iraq said Tuesday he was plotting to attack Danish and Dutch teams at the World Cup in South Africa next month to avenge insults against the Prophet Muhammad.

Iraqi security forces holding a Saudi citizen identified as Abdullah Azam Saleh al-Qahtani arranged for The Associated Press to interview him at an unidentified government building in Baghdad. He said he initially came to Iraq in 2004 to fight Americans and was recruited by al-Qaida.

An Iraqi security official with knowledge of the investigation said al-Qahtani was arrested after a joint U.S.-Iraqi operation in April that killed the two top al-Qaida in Iraq figures — Abu Ayyub al-Masri and Abu Omar al-Baghdadi. The official asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to discuss details of the case.

Documents found in the house where they were killed, including a note written by al-Qahtani detailing the World Cup plot, led to his arrest on May 3. Iraqi authorities announced the arrest on Monday.

"We discussed the possibility of taking revenge for the insults of the prophet by attacking Denmark and Holland," al-Qahtani told The AP. "The goal was to attack the Danish and the Dutch teams and their fans," he added.

"If we were not able to reach the teams, then we'd target the fans," he said, adding that they hoped to use guns and car bombs.

The alleged militant, who is about 30 years old with a mustache, was wearing an orange prisoner jumpsuit and had no outward signs of injury or abuse. He did not appear nervous or fearful.

It was unclear whether the militants had the ability to carry out what would have been quite a sophisticated operation — a complicated attack far from their home base.

A U.S. military spokesman referred all questions about al-Qahtani to the government of Iraq.

He said the idea came up in late 2009 during talks with friends over some publications in Western media they deemed offensive to Muslims.

In 2006, 12 cartoons of the prophet in a Danish newspaper sparked furious protests in Muslim countries.

In the Netherlands, an anti-Islam party has become the country's fastest growing political movement. Its leader, Geert Wilders, calls the Quran a "fascist book" and wants it banned in the Netherlands. His 2008 short film "Fitna," offended many Muslims by juxtaposing Quranic verses with images of terrorism by Islamic radicals.

He advocated closing borders to immigrants, and taxing clothing commonly worn by Muslims, such as headscarves, because they "pollute" the Dutch landscape.

Wilders' popularity is partly a reaction to a spate of Islamic radical violence that sent shudders through the nation a few years ago. In 2004, a young Muslim from the Slotervaart neighborhood murdered Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, who had produced a short film portraying alleged oppression of Muslim women.

Al-Qahtani said the World Cup was considered a high-profile international event and South Africa was thought to be easier to travel to than either of the two European countries they wanted to target.

The Iraqi security official said no steps had yet been taken to put the plan into motion, such as obtaining bomb-making materials.

Al-Qahtani said the plot still needed approval from the al-Qaida chain of command, specifically the group's No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Anti-Qaeda Sunni imams slaughtered in Iraq
BAQUBA, Iraq -- Two Sunni Arab imams were brutally killed on Monday in Iraq, including one who was decapitated and had his head planted on a power pole, in attacks blamed on Al-Qaeda, military officials said.

The slayings in the province of Diyala, northeast of Baghdad, were against anti-Qaeda preachers who regularly railed against the terror network during Friday sermons.

"At around 2:00 pm (1100 GMT), armed Al-Qaeda members captured Sheikh Abdullah Shakur while he was in Saadiyah market," said a Diyala military command officer who declined to be identified, referring to the central town.

"They returned an hour later with his head and attached it to an electricity post."

Human rights organization will be flocking to Iraq? Didn't think so. They are focused on Arizona right now. Definitely a message. Could be AQ. Could be Shia.

#3  "Could be AQ. Could be Shia." - JohnQC

- almost certainly Al Q. 1. Its not the Shia MO (normally they shoot and bury enemies because an anonymous death is considered humiliating). 2. Al Q has claimed responsibility for the slaughter.

Two officials, one terrorist killed in southern Thailand
The chief of the public works office of Tha Kam Sam tambon administration organisation in Nong Chik district of Pattani province was killed by gunmen on Tuesday. Pol Lt-Col Veerachart Khuhamuk, deputy chief of district police, said the attack took place about 11am while Jirapong Choti-akranit, 35, chief of the public works office of Tha Kam Sam TAO, was driving a pick-up truck to his office along Hat Yai-Pattani road. Three men followed him on a motorcycle and two opened fire at him with an M16 rifle and a 9mm pistol, killing him instantly.

And:

An education expert with a local administrative body has been shot dead in Yala in an attack believed to be aimed at stirring up violence on the first day of the new school year, police say.

The body of Sathian Sathianbut, 33, who worked with the Yala tambon administration organisation in Yaha district, was found lying yesterday morning on the Kota Bharu-Raman road. Police inquiries indicate Sathian was followed by two terrorists suspected insurgents on a motorcycle before one of them shot him. Police believe the attackers wanted to disrupt the return of teachers and students to classes across the lower South yesterday.

In Narathiwat, police and soldiers have stepped up their protection for teachers and students at 369 schools across the province. The officers are working with provincial officials and village defence volunteers to avoid any repeat of the attacks on teachers and schools that have taken place in recent years.

Village defence volunteers stood guard yesterday at schools as officers escorted teachers to and from school and facilitated the travel of parents and their children, especially in risk areas in Si Sakhon, Rueso, Cho Airong, Chanae and Rangae districts. Teachers are targeted by terrorists insurgents for the effect their death and injury has on other teachers. Schools are also forced to suspend classes when the teachers are unable to fill their posts. Security officers say up to 126 teachers have been killed or injured since the violence flared in the lower South in 2004, mostly in the Muslim-dominated provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

In Pattani, governor Theerathep Sriyaphan yesterday handed out about one million baht in aid to 33 people whose property was damaged during two bomb blasts near Pattani police station in Muang district on April 21. One police officer was killed in the attacks and more than 60 people were wounded. Homes and cars were also damaged in the blasts.

Also:

One terrorist separatist militant was killed in a clash with a joint military and police force, led by Col Komkrish Rattanachaya, commander of the No 41 Special Task Force Unit, on Tuesday morning, police said. The security force raided Kampong Lalae village, tambon Bajoh of Yala's Bannang Sata district, about 5.30am after receiving a tip that an terror insurgent supporter was hiding there. While the soldiers and police were surrounding the targeted village, a man with pistol in his hand ran out from a house and fired at them as he tried to flee. The security force fired back and the man was killed.

He was identified as Sulaiman Suwae, 30, of the village. He was wanted on several arrest warrants for involvement in inciting violence in the far South.

Russian captain and one other abducted by pirates off Cameroon - were on Arctic Sea cargo ship
This is going to be an interesting convoluted story. According to EagleSpeak..
The attackers took captain Boris Tersintsev and chief engineering officer Igor Shumik hostage and left the ship.

Shumik was among the 15 crew members on the Arctic Sea cargo ship, which disappeared for more than three weeks last summer while carrying a $2 million shipment of timber from Finland to Algeria.

Most of you will remember the remarkable saga of the MV Arctic Sea. You might also note a couple of 8 suspected "pirates" ended up in a Russian prison.
