Saying the President finds gushing oil leaks and religiously-motivated terrorists "mind-numbingly dull," Obama's White House advisers are seeking out crises "with more intellectual depth" to capture the President's imagination.
"The President is so cerebral," said one official, "that what he really needs is, say, a super-villain like Brainiac to challenge him to a chess game for world peace. That would really get the President engaged. A guy trying to blow up a car stuffed with propane tanks in Times Square? Not so much."
Obama's advisers said that while the President did watch some footage of the largest oil spill disaster in U.S. history, he remarked "Wow, a bunch of crap coming out of the ground," with more than a little sarcasm. "Then he changed the channel to PBS and watched a show on the life cycle of cuttlefish."

Senior White House advisers asked former President Bill Clinton to talk to Joe Sestak about whether he was serious about running for Senate, and to feel out whether he'd be open to other alternatives, according to sources familiar with the situation.
But the White House maintains that the Clinton-Sestak discussions were informal, according to the sources. "Let me make one thing clear," one source said, wagging his finger. "I--er, I mean he--did not have sexual relations with that candidate, Joe Sestak. I never told anybody to not run, not a single time; never. These allegations are false."
The White House, under pressure to divulge the specifics of its interactions with Sestak, will release a formal statement later today outlining their version of events, including Clinton's involvement.... All we need now is a copy of Leaves of Grass and a special prosecutor.
I've been unable to ascertain precisely what Clinton discussed with Sestak in terms of his future options, but I'm gullible the release of the White House's formal response will clear that up.

Won't happen. Bill didn't offer a job, he asked whether Sestak was open to a job. No jury will convict if that's all it is.
It's along the lines of, "Cheez, Joe, if you're that unhappy being a Representative, maybe there's something else in the Government you'd like doing instead?"

President Obama insisted Thursday there was "nothing improper" about White House contacts with Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak, who has asserted a White House official offered him an administration job if he dropped his primary challenge for Democrat Arlen Specter's Senate seat in Pennsylvania.
"I can assure the public nothing improper took place," Mr. Obama said in his first public comments on the incident, speaking near the end of an hourlong press conference at the White House. Choosing his words carefully, Mr. Obama declined to elaborate on his answer, saying White House lawyers were preparing a fuller response that would be released "shortly, [and] I don't mean weeks or months."
Mr. Sestak, a former Navy admiral, made the assertion about a "high-ranking" job offer at least twice - once to a local cable television interviewer Feb. 18 and again after his primary win on Sunday. He has steadfastly declined to say who approached him and which job was discussed. However, Mr. Sestak has said he would cooperate in any investigation.
California Rep. Darrell Issa, ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said he was not satisfied with the response so far by Mr. Obama and others on the Sestak-Specter affair.
He said the White House needs to answer the question: Was Mr. Sestak offered a job in return for getting out of the race? Can't the One say, "Not by me, and I will fire anyone who did"? Probably not. He can't afford to lose Axelrod ...
"Partial answers will only lead to more questions," said Mr. Issa, who has asked the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to the case, a request the department has refused. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele echoed Mr. Issa's sentiment. "The silence is rapidly becoming deafening. How many days are needed and how many hours of negotiations between Joe Sestak and the Obama administration are required to simply tell the truth?"
On Wednesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell, a Democrat who supported Mr. Specter, said the White House and Mr. Sestak should be as transparent as possible and that trying to "stonewall" will only make the situation "fester" and only add to the pressure to appoint a special prosecutor. "People are going to interpret this worse than it probably is," he told Fox News. "I do not believe that anybody in the White House was crazy enough to say, 'You can have this specific job if you withdraw.' " On the other hand, no one seems to be able to categorically deny it.

Allrighty then. The WH statement will need a couple of key points for their apologetic media to really glom on to. First it will be the offer itself. They may need to seek the advice of Bill Clinton himself on this one. However, this crowd has proven to be quite adept at using the hypothetical defense. So it most likely will be the ole just a couple of guys shootin da shit routine. You know, just noodlin spitballin talking what ifs. And for good measure cmon this is DC these kinds of conversations have gone on time and memorial. But the thrust will be the timing. They will say the offer was made before Sestak officially announced his bid no harm no foul. This will be key for obfuscating all that pesky felony talk. Of course, there will be the obligatory insinuation that the whole thing is nothing more then a partisian witch-hunt concocted to distract from the real issues. It will be interesting to see who takes the proverbial spear to the head on this one. Most likely candidate will be Rham. Hell, if he does run for mayor of Chi-Town he can wear this like a badge of honor.

A defensive President Obama sought Thursday to quell doubts about his handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, insisting that his administration has been "in charge" from the moment it began and bristling that critics who accuse it of being sluggish to react "don't know the facts." If this becomes his "Katrina" it's only because his ego got in the way.
The news conference marked a sharp departure in tone from the first days after an oil rig explosion caused the spill, when the White House seemed determined to fix the blame and keep the public outrage directed at the oil company involved. Did he ever ask BP, "What can we do to help?" Too big an ego for that, Mr. Resolute and In Charge?
This is the familiar Obama: resolute and in charge. But six weeks after the spill began, those words seemed to highlight the difficulty he has had in convincing the country that he is on top of the situation. As oil continues to foul the gulf, the conflicting signals coming from the president and his team have imperiled his reputation for competence and coolness in the face of crisis.
In the early weeks after the rig sank, polls showed the public saw a clear villain - BP - and approved of the administration's approach to the situation, which emphasized ensuring that the oil company would bear the cost of stopping the spill, cleaning it up and repairing the damage. Some in the White House were so confident of their ability to stay ahead of the crisis that they welcomed comparisons with George W. Bush's bungling of the response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Bring ot baby! We're too kewl!
But the latest surveys show that public confidence in Washington's handling of the spill has dropped sharply. And there has also been a fraying of what had begun as a relatively smooth working relationship among the government, BP, and state and local officials in the region. "The president has not been as visible as he should have been on this," Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) told Politico, "and he's going to pay a political price for it, unfortunately." His choice to flip-flop won't help.
