Four Taliban snipers get their tickets to paradise punched by British Special Forces
Hopefully they get 72 virgins that look like Bela Lugosi.
Four deadly foreign mercenary snipers hired by the Taliban have been killed after being tracked down by British Special Forces in Afghanistan.

They were among at least three pairs of crackshots recruited by the Taliban from Pakistan, Egypt and Chechnya.
Chechnyans do seem to turn out their share of crazed killers and snipers ...
The mercenaries -- who can kill troops at a range of up to 650 yards -- are understood to have shot dead up to ten British soldiers in recent weeks. The victims include Sapper Darren Foster, 20, from Whitehaven, Cumbria. He was picked off from long distance by a single shot which went through a gap just 9in wide in a protected look-out post in Sangin valley, Helmand Province.

News of the Taliban deaths came as a British soldier was killed during a firefight with insurgents yesterday as he provided security for a meeting between Afghan elders and Nato forces. The soldier, from the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, was killed during an exchange of fire in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand.

Lieutenant-Colonel James Carr-Smith, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: 'He died in the course of his duty. He will be sorely missed and his actions will not be forgotten. We will remember him.' His next of kin have been informed.

The death brings to 332 the number of British troops killed in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001.

5 al Qaeda Fighters Die in Yemen
Yemeni troops have killed five al Qaeda gun-hung tough guys after a string of attacks by hard boyz on security personnel in south Yemen, the Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

The five turbans were killed in the restive province of Abyan where suspected al Qaeda gunnies shot dead eight soldiers and set ablaze a military vehicle on Friday, a ministry website said.

Most of the assaults since June have been claimed by al Qaeda, which has stepped up attacks on security forces in recent months, marking a shift in tactics for the global bad boy group's Yemen arm, which previously focused on foreign targets.

Bahrain Detains 12 Following Protest
[Arab News] Bahraini authorities detained 12 people on sabotage and arson charges, a security officer was quoted Saturday as saying, after crowds burned tires and hurled petrol bombs to protest the arrest of Shiite muscle.

The protests, which took place Friday, were triggered by the arrest of a total of eight muscle and preachers during the week ahead of parliamentary elections in the island kingdom.

"They set tires, garbage skips, empty water tanks and private property on fire, in addition to hurling firebombs on roads," Bahrain's Gulf Daily News quoted an unidentified security officer as saying.

The accused Santiago municipal police officer, an unidentified female, is alleged to be in the pay of organized crime.

So far investigators have found that the criminal group numbering about 15 individuals used official disguise to gain access to the gated community where Calvazos lived. Calvazos, investigating the activities of the group, was forced at gunpoint into the trunk of a sedan and driven away.

#3  My guess is there was (or at least we thought there was) somebody 'significant' in one of those vehicles - somebody we seriously wanted dead - but we are not and have not been interested in body count of the rank and file and sympathizers.

Southeast Asia
Shop owner gunned down in southern Thailand
The owner of a fruit shop was gunned down in the downtown Yala on Friday night. He was shot dead by two motorcycle gunmen as he was parking his motorcycle at the shop. Police have obtained a tape from a surveillance camera near the shop.

Meanwhile, two terrorists suspected insurgents escaped when security forces raided their hideout in Pattani. The two suspected bomb makers - Maha Masoree Samae, 27, and Afandi Kapa - were busy at work when their forest hideout was raided. A local police chief said that a joint police-military team raided the hideout, which triggered a gunfight. Reinforcements were called in and surrounded the area, but the suspects fled.

There was evidence that the area was used for arms training. Many bomb-making materials were seized, including mobile phones, circuit panels, urea fertiliser and wires. Some of the materials were buried underground. There was enough material to make at least 11 bombs.

Nine killed in Philippines commie attacks
Communist guerrillas killed eight coppers and a local official in coordinated attacks in the central Philippines on Saturday, the police commander for the region said.

New People's Army (NPA) gunnies murdered a village official at his home at dawn and then ambushed a police patrol sent to investigate the killing, said Chief Superintendent Arnold Revilla, the regional police chief. The rebels set off an IED as the patrol approached the village official's home, then raked it with gunfire, Revilla told reporters by telephone.

He said the dead included the deputy police commander of Catarman city, Senior Inspector Necasio San Antonio. The attackers then stole the victims' firearms, he added.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Leb aid ship will not head for Gaza on Sunday
A ship carrying women activists and aid will no longer head to Gaza via Cyprus from Lebanon on Sunday, the organisers said, after Nicosia announced it would not allow the vessel to sail from its ports.

"We will not embark tomorrow," Samar al-Hajj told Reuters. "We are working to find another place (port to sail from). There are obstacles, difficulties. We won't give up easily," she said.

Women activists had planned to take aid to Palestinians in Gaza aboard their vessel, the Mariam, which was due to set sail from Lebanon's northern port of Tripoli for Cyprus on Sunday. Israel has warned that it will not allow ships to reach Gaza, controlled by the militant Palestinian group Hamas since 2007. Cypriot police said on Friday the arrival and departure of ships to or from Gaza through Cyprus ports was prohibited, prompting the Lebanese transport minister to revoke permission for the ship to sail there, according to the organisers. Ghazi Aridi told New TV on Friday the ship would not sail as long as Cypriot authorities have refused to receive it. He added Lebanon would not give permission for sail to an unknown party.

Iran starts to fuel up first nuclear power plant
Iran began fuelling its first nuclear power plant on Saturday, a potent symbol of its growing regional sway and rejection of international sanctions designed to prevent it building a nuclear bomb.

Iranian television showed live pictures of Iran's nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi and his Russian counterpart watching a fuel rod assembly being prepared for insertion into the reactor near the Gulf city of Bushehr.

"Despite all the pressures, sanctions and hardships imposed by Western nations, we are now witnessing the start-up of the largest symbol of Iran's peaceful nuclear activities," Salehi told a news conference afterwards.

#4  This plant is less of a threat then the many U enrichment plants that Iran is operating.

The Bushehr will be monitored, the U-enrichment plants are not. We know where the Bushehr plant is (it is an easy target near the Persian gulf), we don't know where all the U enrichment plants are.

It will be interesting to see if the Bushehr works well. It is a patchwork of various designs. It has a capacity of about 1 GW. Although Iran will claim otherwise, it might never exceed 50 MW if some of the tech stuff doesn't match the other tech stuff.

#5  I've seen that some have said that now that it's being fueled the window for (the US|Israel) to attack is past. I don't see why. An attack after it's fueled would make it that much harder to restart, right? Or am I just heartless?

#6  "Or am I just heartless?"

In this particular case, why would that be a problem, JonC? ;-p

#7  Its perfectly ok to bomb it now: you're just scattering unburned non-irradiated fuel that's a neutron emitter. No big deal.

Once you pull rods and start fissioning the stuff, then you're producing actinides and gamma emitters and stuff with 20000 year half-lives. Nothing short of dropping a mountain on top of top of it and entombing it will be safe.

of course, I'm working on that, but I gather that the "mode of solution" would cause some heartburn among some Rantburg regulars.

I'll just apologize then, if you don't mind...

#8  HAARETZ OP-ED: WAKE UP! | IRAN MAY NEVER USE AN ATOM BOMB, BUT ISRAEL CAN'T TAKE THE RISK.
