Sudan attacks Darfur rebels hours before UN visit
[Arab News] Sudan's army said it attacked rebels in Darfur on Thursday, hours before the arrival of UN Security Council envoys on a peace mission to the region.

Hostile crowds met the UN party after it landed in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, on Thursday afternoon as news of the latest violence in Darfur's seven-year conflict started to emerge.

The reception was in marked contrast to the welcoming crowds which greeted the ambassadors on Wednesday in Juba, the capital of south Sudan, an oil-producing region preparing for a referendum on whether it should separate from the north.

The Security Council delegation, including US ambassador to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society Susan Rice, is in Sudan to push for progress in the country's faltering peace processor in Darfur, and a separate settlement that ended decades of north-south war.

Sudan's army front man told Rooters ground troops attacked rebels blocking a key road near the mountainous Jebal Marra region on Thursday morning, about 160 km (100 miles) southwest of El Fasher.

"The Sudanese army attacked the Suni area today ... and expelled the rebels from Eastern Jabel Marra," the army's front man said, without giving details of casualties.

The rebel Sudan Liberation Army told Rooters army ground and air forces had been launching ground and air assaults on their positions near Jabel Marra area for weeks, but stepped up their campaign on Thursday.

Fighting erupted in Darfur in 2003 when mostly non-Arab rebels launched a revolt, accusing the Khartoum government of neglecting the arid region.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Sudanese president Omar Bashir to face charges of criminal masterminding genocide and war crimes during the government's counter-insurgency campaign.

Hundreds of angry protesters lined the streets outside El Fasher airport, confining the UN delegation for a while to a compound used by Darfur's joint UN/African Union peacekeepers.

When the Security Council convoy managed to leave, demonstrators banged their fists on their vehicles, shouting "Yes, Yes, Bashir" and other slogans.

One of the reasons for the council's two-day visit to Darfur was "to express our concern about the continued, increased violence in Darfur," Britain's UN Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told news hounds.

"We're concerned about sex violence, child soldiers, import of weapons to the region."

South Sudan president Salva Kiir told envoys on Wednesday his region might have to hold its own independence vote if the north disrupted the referendum promised in a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of north-south civil war, said Lyall Grant.

Such a move would enrage Khartoum, which wants to keep Africa's largest country in one piece. A senior northern official described Kiir's statement as "unacceptable."

Southerners are about three months away from a referendum on whether they should form Africa's newest country or stay in Sudan. Analysts have warned the two sides may revert to war.

Preparations for the vote are behind schedule and the south has repeatedly accused the north of trying to delay the ballot to keep control of the region's oil, a charge Khartoum denies.

Yemeni killer of Frenchman was driven by 'personal motives'
[Arab News] A Yemeni security guard who rubbed out a Frenchman at an Austrian energy firm's compound near Sanaa this week was driven by "personal motives," Yemen's Interior Ministry said on Friday.
"Filthy demon kufr! Allahu akhbar!!!!!1!1!11!!!" *spittle* *frothing at the mouth* *eyeballs rolled back in his head* *EPILEPTIC FIT!!!!!1111!!11*

That kind of personal motive?
Yemeni security sources said earlier this week initial indications were that Al-Qaeda forces of Evil were behind the attack as well as the firing of a rocket-propelled grenade also on Monday at a British diplomat's car in Sanaa.

"First investigations with the accused show it likely that... the crime was committed out of personal motives," an Interior Ministry statement on government website "26 September" said.

"This conclusion is only preliminary and not a final verdict since the investigations are just at the beginning," it added.

The statement named the guard as Hisham Mohammed Mohammed Assem, a 19-year-old from the Taizz province who lives in Sanaa.
A Yemini youth with an actual paying job?!? His family is going to be very annoyed that he threw away an actual source of income. Now how are they to afford to marry off his sisters?
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), an arm of Al-Qaeda thought to be include mainly Yemenis, has not issued any claim of responsibility for the attack.

AQAP has struck more often at Yemeni and Western targets since Sanaa declared "war" on the group, with US support, after it claimed a failed US airliner bombing in December.

Occasional American missile strikes to back the crackdown have sometimes killed civilians as well as forces of Evil -- an embarrassment to a government aware of the fiercely anti-US sentiments of many Yemenis in a country awash with guns.

Analysts say Yemen's government, also facing southern secessionists and northern rebels, is keen to benefit from Western backing and show that Yemen is paying dearly for its sometimes questioned commitment to combating Al-Qaeda.

A government website said on Tuesday that Yemen had lost $12 billion in tourism and investment since Al-Qaeda bombed a US warship in Aden harbour in 2000, killing 17 sailors. It said the security forces had lost 64 dead in fighting with Al-Qaeda since a crackdown began in mid-August.

More than two in five Yemen's 23 million people live on less than $2 a day. A third do not have enough food for their needs, according to the International Food Policy Research Institute.
So the lad's family prob'ly has more to worry about that paying for elaborate weddings. Darwin always wins.

Security forces shoot it out with gunnies in Dhalea
The southern city of Dhalea witnessed violent clashes between security forces and bully boys, following a security campaigns on the city houses in search for wanted elements.

Locals told opposition sources that security forces raided several houses and arrest- ed dozens of people and relatives of those wanted by police, including some leaders of the Southern Mobility.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
the security campaigns were met with armed resistance from those who refused to surrender themselves, which developed and extended for more than 15 hours, resulting in a number of casualties among the security and the citizens.

Government sources confirmed that a curfew was put in practice as anyone seen in the streets of Dhalea after 6pm was imprisoned by security forces.

According to the same source, the armed clashes evolved rapidly, especially after the intervention of new military units in the city and tanks bombing the houses. The con- flict resulted in the death of one soldier and wounding 6 others in addition to a woman and a boy, 15. Seven houses were bombed during the governmental raids.

The city's residents lost electricity power immediately as well as any kind of commu- nication link or network. The government also cancelled all telephone networks late last week.

For his part, Chief of Dhalea Security, Ghazi Ahmed Ali said that the clashes are still continuing with the outlaws; and we don't have statistics about the injuries, in- flicted by the fighting.

Ghazi said that 6 of the security soldiers were maimed in the clashes, all of whom were transferred to the hospital for treat- ment. He told the same source that the goal of the campaign carried out by security forces is to search for faceless myrmidons wanted by police, who are accused of targeting security forces and army during the last period and outlaw persons.

He explained that the soldiers become threaten of being targeted by outlaw ele- ments, and that these elements have various weapons including machine guns, bombs, missiles, RPG's, sniper rifles and other weap- ons. At the same time, he wondered about their identities, as he was surprised that civilians can carry such weapons and target people from time to time.

#1  Except for a little bit about the jet ski murder on Lake Maricone on the Tex-Mex border and an article in the Houston Chronicle about the 48 Americans killed so far this year in Mexico , virtually no mention of this stuff is appearing in the news. China-Japan-Koreas
Norks confirm Sonny Jong Un's succession
[Dawn] A senior North Korean official has given the first public confirmation that the youngest son of veteran leader Kim Jong-Il will succeed his father, The Associated Press reported Friday.

Yang Hyong-Sop confirmed the eventual ascent to power of Kim Jong-Un in an interview in Pyongyang with AP's television affiliate APTN, the US news agency reported.

The reported remarks by Yang, a leading ruling party member, marked the first time that a North Korean official has spoken openly about what will be the nuclear-armed nation's second dynastic succession.

"Our people take pride in the fact that they are blessed with great leaders from generation to generation," The Associated Press quoted Yang as saying in the interview.

"Our people are honoured to serve the great President Kim Il-Sung and the great leader Kim Jong-Il," he added. "Now we also have the honour of serving young General Kim Jong-Un."

Jong-Un, believed aged about 27, was last week appointed a four-star general and given powerful party posts, apparently confirming his status as leader-in-waiting to his ageing and ailing father.

Yang is a member of the political bureau of the central committee of the Workers' Party and vice president of the presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, the country's parliament.

Kim Jong-Il took over from his own father and founding president Kim Il-Sung, who died in 1994.

The current leader, now 68, suffered a stroke two years ago and also reportedly suffers kidney problems, making a second succession more pressing.

But the next leader remains a mystery to the outside world.

Official media in the secretive state had never mentioned his name until last week, when it reported his promotions and carried the first-ever photograph of the portly youth.

Since the landmark party conference on September 28 which promoted Jong-Un, state media have reported two public appearances by father and son -- at a military exercise and at a concert.

The North is planning a massive military parade this Sunday to mark a party anniversary -- an event seen by South Korea as linked to the succession process.

The South's Yonhap news agency said it would be the country's biggest ever military parade, involving 20,000 troops plus missiles, tanks and other weaponry.

The agency, quoting sources, said 100,000 civilians would stage a colourful rally.

It said fireworks have been imported from China for an evening gala along the banks of the Taedong river, which bisects the showpiece capital Pyongyang.

Seoul's Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young said Monday the North appears to be using the 65th anniversary of the ruling party's founding to celebrate "the formation of a succession platform" for Jong-Un.

The minister said about 15,000 soldiers have been deployed near Pyongyang for the occasion.

The impoverished nation of 24 million struggles to feed its people, with one third of young children stunted by malnutrition according to the UN children's fund.

Its official news agency said Friday the capital was in festive mood, with art, photo and book exhibitions held to commemorate the impending anniversary.

Crowds are flocking to museums to learn about the party's "glorious history" and visiting a giant statue of Kim Il-Sung to lay floral tributes, it said.

Streets are decorated with flags and placards reading "Iron-willed Party" and "Invincible Party".

Public Executions on the Rise in N. Korea
North Korea has increased public executions, apparently in a bid to tighten controls amid the designation of North Korean leader's son Kim Jong-un as his father's heir. According to data released on Tuesday by Grand National Party lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun, the regime publicly executed at least 22 people until the first half of this year since a botched currency reform late last year.

Yoon, a member of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee, obtained the data from an intelligence agency.

According to the data, the regime executed 10 people, including two women, on charges of robbery, rape and prostitution, all together in Pyongyang in December 2009. It also publicly executed the platoon leader of the border garrison on charges of narcotics smuggling and human trafficking the same month.

A noncom officer of the border garrison was executed in January for having aided and abetted the defection of a family and two Chinese Koreans for having leaked confidential information in February.

Yoon said a man who was publicly executed alongside Pak Nam-gi, the former director of the Workers Party Planning and Finance Department, in Pyongyang in March, turned out to be Ri Tae-il, then the first deputy director of the Workers Party's Organization and Guidance Department.

"When the currency reform, which the regime had hoped to tout as the achievement of Kim Jong-un, went wrong and people vented their complaints, it laid the blame on these two officials and executed them by a firing squad on espionage charges," Yoon added.

In March, two people were publicly executed for counterfeiting new banknotes, in April a platoon leader of the border garrison for aiding and abetting defectors and leaking military secrets, and in June two people for murder and another for human trafficking.

The figures are far larger than those in previous reports published by Amnesty International, where it said the North publicly executed at least 23 people between 1970 and 1992 and "at least seven" in 2009.

#1  The more difficult it becomes to feed them, the more selective the government will become on which mouths are left alive to be fed.

This is looking like a bad winter coming and harvests are down around the globe. Not to mention the "hundreds of thousands" of spring lambs that have died in New Zealand after extremely bad late blizzards.

This is going to be one tough winter, folks.

Two dronezaps wax 9 terrorists in N Wazoo
[Pak Daily Times] Two suspected US missiles have zapped nine people in the tribal areas, intelligence officials said on Friday.

One evening, strike in the town of Mohammad Khel killed four people and a second in Datta Khel killed five, two officials said. The identity of the deaders was not immediately known, but the area of the strikes in North Wazoo is believed to be controlled by the Talibs. The officials said all nine deaders are believed to be forces of Evil and some may be imported muscle. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were very frightened. They could say no more.

The strikes would be the seventh and eighth missile attacks this month, keeping up a recent surge in such CIA-run, dronezaps. In September, the US is believed to have launched at least 21 such violations of Pak sovereignty, an unprecedented number and nearly all in North Wazoo. The US rarely acknowledges the covert missile strike programme. Pakistain officially opposes the programme, but is believed to secretly support it.

#7  Apparently the Al Dura hoax wasn't enough, Fox news and AP are running the story now.

Personally, I think Israel should end this insanity, push these arabs back into their original countries and keep the land won by Arab wars of attempted extermination.

2 Palestinian dead in Israeli raid in WBank
[Pak Daily Times] Israeli troops killed two senior Hamas forces of Evil in an early-morning raid on Friday in the West Bank city of Hebron, raising tensions as peace talks remain stuck over Israeli settlement building.

The two gunnies were wanted in connection with the killing of four Israelis near Hebron on Aug 31, just as new Israeli-Paleostinian peace talks were getting under way, the Israeli military said. Media aligned with Hamas in the Gazoo Strip also said the men were behind the Hebron shooting.

Israeli soldiers with jeeps and an armoured bulldozer surrounded the house in Hebron before dawn. The military said the men rebuffed calls to surrender and began shooting at the troops outside. The soldiers then returned fire, killing both snuffys, the military said.

An AP photographer on the scene saw one body on the street outside. The bulldozer later demolished the three-story house. The family that had been inside when the raid began was given time to leave before the gunbattle began. Paleostinian and Israeli forces had been looking for the Hamas men since the four Israelis were shot and killed near Hebron, Paleostinian security officials said.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because the information was not officially made public. Hamas' military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, issued a statement vowing to avenge the deaths. A Hamas official in the Gazoo Strip, which is controlled by the snuffy group, confirmed that both of the men killed were senior members of the group's armed wing.

Settler leader drives into two Palestinian kids as they hurl rocks
[Haaretz] David Be'eri, head of a known settler group, hit two Palestinian children with his car on Friday, after they hurled rocks at his vehicle in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

The children were evacuated to Moqassed Hospital in East Jerusalem. One child is lightly hurt while the other sustained injuries to his chest and his lower body and is currently in moderate condition.

Be'eri is a well-known right-wing activist and is the director of Elad, a nonprofit organization that runs the City of David in East Jerusalem and also works to settle Jews in the area.

According to Be'eri, he was in his car with his son as the Palestinian children hurled rocks at them, and out of fear for his and his son's lives, he tried to escape them in any way he could which made him accidently hit the children.

Al-Qassam vows Dire Revenge™ over Hebron killings
(Ma'an) -- Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,' military wing the Al-Qassam Brigades vowed Friday that it would respond to the killing of two senior commanders during an Israeli raid in Hebron.

Al-Qassam Brigades front man Abu Ubaidah said the militia would "reply in a suitable way to such a crime," to the killing of Nashat Al-Karmi, a senior military commander and Maamoun Al-Natsha, a local Hebron commander.

The killings, the front man said, would not "break the resistance and the fighters ... resistance fighters are free to reply at any time at any place."

Israel says militia leaders involved in fatal settler shooting

The Israeli army said the Hebron raid was carried out to detain those involved in the shooting deaths of four Israeli settlers near the Kiryat Arba settlement on 31 August, which Hamas' military wing grabbed credit for.

A statement issued by the military said during the arrest, one of the suspects opened fire, which was returned by troops who identified a hit, adding that the second casuality was caused when "forces employed engineering tools," to get the suspect to leave the building he was hiding in, after refusing to surrender.

The army further said six "terror suspects" were detained by forces, who they say were in possession of riffles.

Al-Karmi, 33, was released from Israeli prison in August 2009 and was "declared a wanted suspect" following the fatal settler shooting. Natsha was detained by Israeli forces in 2008 for his affiliation to Hamas.

According to the army statement, since 31 August, investigations and arrests have provided information on "planned future terror attacks and the re-establishment of the Hamas military wing in Hebron was revealed. The IDF will continue to pursue terror."

Curfew imposed

Earlier, locals said Israeli forces imposed a curfew on the southern West Bank district amid gunfire, adding that troops surrounded three homes belonging to Radwan Ar-Rajabi, Saadi Barwan and Ayoub Gheith, demolishing the fence surrounding the houses.

Israeli bulldozers were seen demolishing a three-story home in search of "wanted" Paleostinians in hiding, witnesses said.

Iran's Jundallah claim abduction of nuke worker
[Al Arabiya] The Sunni snuffy group Jundallah has kidnapped an Iranian nuclear worker in the city of Esfahan, according to a statement seen by Al Arabiya on Friday, as five people were killed and nine others maimed in a shooting incident in Iran's western province of Kurdistan.

The statement by the Sunni Baluchi organization, which is known for its armed activities against governmental institutions and military establishments in Iran, mentioned that members of the organization have carried out an "intelligence operation" in Esfahan and kidnapped the employee, who worked at an Iranian nuclear establishment.

No official confirmation
Jundallah alleged that the operation was carried out few days ago, but the statement did not mention the exact date of the abduction. The statement mentioned the name of the hostage as Amir Hussein Shirani bin Mohammed Shirani, who was born in 1971.

The statement said that the kidnapped nuclear worker was taken to Baluchistan mountains and promised to publish a number of "video clips and photos showing his confession."

There was no confirmation from any official or independent source in Iran about the Jundallah allegations.

In case the allegation was correct, it would be the first operation of its kind, as it took place in Esfahan, which is hundreds of kilometers away from Jundallah stronghold in Sistan-Baluchistan that neighbors the Pak Baluchistan.

Iran has executed Junallah leader Abdul Malik Rigi in June after the Revolution Court convicted him of criminal masterminding a number of armed operations in Baluchistan.

Iran accuses Jundallah of having links with the CIA and al-Qaeda. But the group deny the allegation and say that their main aim is to support the national rights of minorities in Iran's Baluchistan.
