Egyptian Islamists plunge into politics
While the Muslim Brotherhood and its political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, has attracted the most scrutiny and fear among Egyptian liberals, the Islamic end of the political spectrum is growing crowded with fringe movements announcing bids to run in the parliamentary elections come September.

Nagib Gibra'il, a Christian lawyer and head of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights Organization, said, "The situation is extremely dangerous. According to polls, Islamist parties will receive more than 50 percent of the votes in the elections and form the next government. This will jeopardize the revolution and the country itself."

A poll published by the New York-based Pew Research Center earlier this month found that Egyptians were almost evenly divided between those who “sympathize” with Islamic fundamentalists and those who don’t. Still, Islamic parties are making efforts to present themselves as moderates.

The Safety and Development Party, created by former members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, is led by Kamal Al-Said Habib, who spent 10 years in prison for his involvement in the Sadat assassination. Nevertheless, the party says that it will allow Coptic Christians and women to join.

Tareq and Aboud Al-Zumr, cousins who belong to the Islamist Al-Gama'a Al-Islamiyya, announced their aim to form a political party before September's elections. Released from prison in March after serving thirty years for plotting to kill Sadat, they sought to alleviate fears by saying their party wouldn’t run a candidate for president.

"Islamists do not seek to dominate," said Tareq Zumr on Tuesday.

Critics say that the moderation is a façade that would quickly come down once the Islamists gained power. Both Al-Gama'a Al-Islamiyya and Egyptian Islamic Jihad are considered terror organizations by the U.S. and officially outlawed in Egypt.

The Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm expressed similar anxieties this week, reporting that the founding members of the new party, many of whom hold doctorates, prefer to use the religious title of "sheikh" rather than "doctor." The newspaper also noticed a change in dress once party leaders thought they weren't being observed by journalists.

"Strangely, following the conference some members of the group changed back from their suits to white robes; forced to change near their cars for lack of room inside the conference hall," the paper reported.

A senior analyst at International Crisis Group, Elijah Zarwan, said it is not clear whether the new parties would be allowed to register, since religious parties are banned. September’s election will be the first free vote in Egypt, but the country still has no new election law.

"It's hard to imagine these groups convincingly presenting themselves as secular parties," Zarwan said.

Meanwhile, rumors that the tiny Shiite minority was also planning to create a political party have enraged Egyptian Salafis.

"We will call on people to fight the supporters of this movement. We have received information indicating that the Shiite sect plans to form a party and publish a newspaper supported by Iran from within," Salafi leader Gamal Al-Marakby told Al-Masry Al-Youm Tuesday.

No, no, certainly not.

Arabia
Saudi Arabia incites civil war in Yemen
[Iran Press TV] A Yemeni political analyst has warned against a Soddy Arabian plot to deflect Yemen's revolution, as festivities between rustics and pro-government supporters gain steam.

"Soddy Arabia is making every effort to wage a civil war in Yemen with the aim of diverting the country's revolution," said Naif Alsharabi, a member of the founding board of Yemen's public committees, in a Thursday interview with Iran's Arabic-language news channel al-Alam.

Alsharabi added that Soddy Arabia and the United States are conspiring to support Yemen's embattled President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
and avert his ouster.

He pointed out that Yemen's revolution comes as a blow to the United Sates and called for the continuation of public protests until the downfall of the regime.

Earlier on Thursday, Yemeni aviation sources reported that festivities in the Arhad district, north of Yemen's main international airport, have disrupted flights.

According to tribal sources, at least 12 members of Yemen's Republican Guard were among the casualties.

Saleh ordered the detention of Sheikh Sadeq al-Ahmar, a son of the late leader of the Hashid tribe, and his nine brothers on Thursday, according to Yemen's defense ministry.

Sheikh Sadeq al-Ahmar succeeded his father, Sheikh Abdullah bin Hussein al-Ahmar, after he died in 2007.

The festivities in the Yemeni capital have left more than 70 people dead since Monday, when the violence escalated after Saleh refused to sign a power transition deal brokered by the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council
... the Medes and the Persians are very sensitive on the subject of the Persian Gulf, which the Arabs refer to as the Arabian Gulf...
([P]GCC).

Saleh also stated on Wednesday that he is prepared to escalate the campaign against anti-regime rustics that have called for his immediate ouster.

Hundreds of anti-government protesters have been killed and many others injured during festivities with riot police and armed individuals loyal to the Yemeni president since the anti-regime demonstrations began in late January, according to local reports.

Bangladesh
Past BNP-led govt patronised militants: PM
[Bangla Daily Star] Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday alleged that it was the BNP-led alliance government that had supported beturbanned goons to blast bombs at some 500 spots across the country during their regime.

"I'm sure the then four-party alliance government had extended cooperation to the beturbanned goons to commit such heinous job; otherwise, it was totally impossible," she said at a mass reception accorded to her at Hotel Inter Continental in La Belle France by Awami League, La Belle France chapter.

Hasina accused the BNP-Jamaat government of tarnishing the image of the country during their tenure. The present government, with hectic efforts during its last two and half years, had regained the country's lost image, she said.

"Now you can feel proud abroad as the present government has built up the image of your country," she told the expatriate Bangladeshis.

The prime minister also accused opposition leader Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
of using her power while in the government to make black money and allow her family members do so.

"They (Khaleda and her family members) made black money trough endless corruption and whitened the black money through paying extra taxes. But black money is black money; it can never be white," she said.

Hasina assured the expatriate Bangladeshis that the Awami League-led grand alliance would not encourage any corruption, militancy and extremism in the country that might again tarnish the image of the country abroad.

"We are voted to power for the welfare of the country and its people. Bangladesh is a country with immense scope for prosperity; we've to utilise that," she said.

The PM called upon the expatriate Bangladeshis to stand beside the country at times of need as they had done in the past and extend cooperation to turn the country into a science and technology-based `Digital Bangladesh'.

She also asked them to work for the country from their respective position so that the nation could uphold its dignity in the international community.

About the gold medal and certificate of diploma she was awarded by famous Dauphine University of La Belle France, Hasina dedicated the medal to the countrymen.

She said her government, in line with its election pledges, has been implementing various programs to raise the living standard of the common people and sought the cooperation of the expatriate Bangladeshis to this end.

She admitted with gratitude that with the remittance of the expatriate Bangladeshis country's foreign currency reserve rose to 11 billion dollars and her government, for the first time after Bangabandhu's government, had bought gold for the country utilising the reserve.

The prime minister urged the pro-liberation patriotic forces especially the expatriate Bangladeshis to beware of any conspiracy against the country and its constitution.

She also thanked the expatriate Bangladeshis for their strong support to her when the last caretaker government had obstructed her entry into the country and subsequently sent her to jail.

Hasina assured the non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) that her government would always remain with them as it had been in the past.

Mentioning their cooperation in every development efforts of the government, she said that soon after assuming the office, her government has taken various measures to resolve their problems and ensure their wellbeing.

In this regared, she mentioned the setting up of Expatriate Welfare Bank for providing collateral-free loans to mitigate the migration cost for aspiring overseas workers as well as for easy and hassle-free remittance of their hard earned money to the country.

The PM observed that without uninterrupted democracy, the desired development of the country would not be possible, as democracy is the precondition of all developments including economic uplift.

She said to stabilise the prices of food grains as well as to remove the sufferings of the people of low income group, her government is procuring food at higher prices from the international market and selling those at lower prices in the domestic market.

"We'll do whatever is needed to ensure food security in the country."

Hasina also listed many other steps that her government has taken for the overall development of the countrymen and the country as a whole.

State Minister for Woman and Children Affairs Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, All-Europe Awami League president Anil Das Gupta, UK AL president Sultan Mohammad Sharif, La Belle France AL leaders Jahanara Sultana, Nargis Sultana and Sheuli Akhter, and famous mime artist Partha Pratim Majumder were, among others, also spoke at the reception.

China-Japan-Koreas
Kimmie's China Trip Turns Sour
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il apparently ran into a reinforced stone wall in talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao about key projects he wants China to invest in. The result is that ground-breaking ceremonies for the development of Hawanggumpyong Island and for roads connecting Hunchun in China with the Rajin-Sonbong special zone have been cancelled.

A diplomatic source in Beijing said on Thursday there were differences of opinion. China is seeking to scrap the development of Hwanggumpyong, an island in the lower reaches of the Duman (or Tumen) River, which it considers financially unviable, and focus investment on Rajin-Sonbong, while North Korea insists on developing both.

The state-run Xinhua News said Kim met Hu and Wen separately on Wednesday. Meeting Wen, Kim said, "The two countries have taken a new step in economic cooperation with the construction of the new Apnok (or Yalu) River bridge. Let's open a new era through expanded and deeper economic cooperation."

Wen was quoted as saying, "China hopes that economic cooperation is achieved through normal business processes and we believe provinces and businesses need to become more proactive." That is seen as a firm rejection of North Korea's hopes that the Chinese central government gets directly involved in the projects. North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency did not report the comments.

Kim was apparently so miffed that the econocrats accompanying him boycotted his later meeting with Hu.

Hu urged Kim to engage in dialogue with South Korea. "China believes that both sides must maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and uphold the goal of denuclearization, while maintaining objectivity and restraint in tackling obstacles and improving mutual relations."

Kim was quoted as saying he hopes to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, stick to the objective of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and believes that the six-party talks should be resumed at an early date.

He wrapped up his seven-day visit on Thursday afternoon and headed back to North Korea aboard his armored train. He was expected to cross the border early Friday morning.

G8 pledges financial help for 'Arab Spring' nations
Leaders to provide over $20 billion for Egypt and Tunisia, "strongly support the aspirations" of protesters in ME and North Africa; Obama: US, France will see through Libya mission.
Exactly who is putting up $20 billion? What part of that is Uncle Sugar ponying up?
Group of Eight leaders promised on Friday to support new Arab democracies, according to a statement they are to release following a meeting in the northern French resort town of Deauville.

"The changes under way in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are historic and have the potential to open the door to the kind of transformation that occurred in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall," says the statement, a copy of which was obtained in advance by Reuters.

"We, members of the G8, strongly support the aspirations of the Arab Spring as well as those of the Iranian people.

"We welcome the Egyptian authorities' decision to request IMF and multilateral development banks' assistance and Tunisia's request for a joint and coordinated development policy loan.

"In this context, multilateral development banks could provide over $20 billion, including 3.5 billion euros from the ECB, for Egypt and Tunisia for 2011-2013 in support of suitable reform efforts.

India-Pakistan
Pak shuts 3 US 'intelligence fusion' cells
Pakistan has closed three US military intelligence liaison centers in Quetta and Peshawar, a US newspaper reported.

The liaison centers, also known as intelligence fusion cells, in Quetta and Peshawar are the main conduits for the United States to share satellite imagery, target data and other intelligence with Pakistani ground forces conducting operations against militants, including Taliban fighters who slip into Afghanistan.

US special operations units have relied on the three facilities, two in Peshawar and one in Quetta, to help coordinate operations on both sides of the border, senior US officials said. The U.S. units are now being withdrawn from all three sites, the officials said, and the centers are being shut down.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the steps are permanent. The closures, which have not been publicly announced, remove US advisors from the front lines of the war against militant groups.

The decision has not affected the CIA's ability to launch missiles from drone aircraft in northwest Pakistan.

Pakistan media ridicule army over attack
[Al Jazeera] Pakistain's military has come in for unexpectedly stinging criticism from the country's media following an attack by Taliban fighters on a key naval base in the southern port city of Bloody Karachi.

Editorials in both the English and Urdu-language press on Tuesday ridiculed the army and accused them of complicity in the attack, which saw a small group of fighters lay siege to the PNS Mehran naval base.

"Political rhetoric and a Cabinet Defence Committee meeting are not going to solve this one," read an editorial in the English-language daily, The News.

"This is an epic failure exposing an existential threat that will need epic leadership to countervail."

An editorial in the usually pro-military Urdu-language Jang, said that the attacks illustrated "a weakness of security measures".

"In very polite words, it can be called worrisome negligence," the paper said.

The English-language Dawn newspaper questioned whether the attackers had received help from within the military, asking: "Did the Taliban raiders have information inside the naval base?"

"Such a possibility cannot be ruled out, because the involvement of serving personnel in several previous attacks has been well-established," the paper said.

National hero
At least six gunnies infiltrated the naval base in Bloody Karachi late on Sunday, killing 13 security forces and wounding 20 others.

Many in Pakistain are concerned about the government's ability to maintain security [Al Jizz]

The base is the headquarters of Pakistain's naval air wing and the fighters were able to destroy two P-3C Orion aircraft from the United States, crucial assets for Pakistain's anti-submarine and maritime surveillance capability.

It took about 100 commandos, rangers and marines to kill four of the attackers and recapture the base.

Despite the criticism of the military, the country has embraced as a national hero Lieutenant Yasir Abbas, a young navy officer who was killed leading the counter-attack against the Taliban fighters.

Yusuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ...
, the Pak prime minister, travelled to the base on Tuesday to pay tribute to the security forces who died.

"We are proud of these brave men", Gilani said, singling out Abbas for particular praise.

But the attack has been a further humiliation for Pakistain's military, already on the back foot following the May 2 killing of the late Osama bin Laden,
... who abandoned all hope when he entered there...
the al-Qaeda leader, by US special forces on Pak soil, where bin Laden had been in hiding.

Inside help suspected in PNS base attack
[Dawn] Pak security officials said Thursday they doubted a 17-hour Taliban siege on a strategic naval air base could have been possible without some kind of inside help.

On Sunday, heavily armed gunnies stormed the naval base in the country's biggest city of Bloody Karachi, destroying two US-made surveillance planes and killing 10 personnel before officials announced the siege was over 17 hours later.

It was the worst assault on a military base since October 2009, and piled embarrassment on the armed forces, who have been fending off accusations of incompetence or complicity after the late Osama bin Laden
... who is currently warming his feet by the fire with Hitler and Himmler...
was found living under their noses.

"The investigation team will question all those who were present at the time of the attack," a security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"The way the gunnies attacked means they had maps and were aware of all the directions inside the base," the official added.

"We suspect that someone inside the base helped them. We are collecting data about all the staff and will also examine their phone data."

The navy on Wednesday removed the commander of the base, insisting it was a pre-planned transfer, but the military is under increasing domestic pressure to be held accountable over security lapses.

"We have recovered some technical gadgets which prove that they were very well trained, they had night vision goggles and were using wireless devices to communicate," another official told AFP.

The siege has forced authorities to consider relocating the navy's main air base in Bloody Karachi away from its current populated area, near the international airport, and fanned debate about the safety of the country's nuclear weapons.

Bloody Karachi is Pakistain's financial capital and the assault was the fourth on the navy after three bombings in late April killed nine people.

Gilani urges world for 'more support, less criticism'
[Dawn] Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ...
on Thursday said Pakistain was diligently pursuing the war against terrorism and urged the international community for lending more support in its efforts.

"Pakistain has hugely paid in terms of casualties and economy. We are fighting the war, which will benefit the whole world," the Prime Minister told a Chinese media delegation at the PM House here.

The 19-member delegation headed by Wang Dongmei, Vice President of China Radio International comprised journalists from Shanghai Dragon television, China Radio International and Tencent web portal.

Prime Minister Gilani said the war on terror was not confined to one nation but was a global phenomenon, which needed to be dealt accordingly.

"Instead of mere criticism, the world needs to show more cooperation towards Pakistain," he said.

He appreciated the statement by Chinese leadership acknowledging Pakistain's contributions in war against terrorism and extremism besides pledging to support it in difficult times.

Gilani also mentioned the role of Chinese media which he said was positively and correctly portraying the situation in Pakistain.

"The positive messages both from the Chinese leadership and the Chinese media are a sense of hope for the people in Pakistain," he said.

Moreover, Prime Minister Gilani stressed for enhancing Sino-Pak relations through people-to-people contacts and cultural and parliamentary exchanges.

He termed economic cooperation with China as the top most priority besides collaboration in the fields of defence, culture, energy and construction of dams.

Sharif said that the elite class of Pakistain has divided the country into two parts but now was not the time for such divisions. He said that after 63 years, the time has come for the country to decide upon what kind of a future they want.

Russian-made walkie-talkie set found near PNS Mehran runway
[Dawn] Investigative authorities have found a walkie-talkie set from the eastern side of the runway at PNS Mehran air base. The set was allegedly used by the gun-hung tough guys during the attack that took place at the PNS Mehran earlier this week, DawnNews reported on Thursday.

According to sources, during a recent search of the bushes surrounding the eastern end of the runway, the walkie-talkie set -- which is of a Russian make -- was found near the location from where the gun-hung tough guys had entered the base. The walkie-talkie has been sent to the laboratories for forensic evidence.

#2  One of the first news articles had the attackers speaking Urdu and a foreign language. Now this Russian equipment points to Pakistan's many upstanding guests of Chechen or Uzbek origin.
