Rebels Strike Sudan's Kadugli after Peace Talks
[An Nahar] Rebels rained rockets on the capital of Sudan's South Kordofan state on Wednesday, official radio reported, a day after peace talks with the government broke off.

"SPLM-North shelled Kadugli with Katyusha (rockets)," Radio Omdurman said in a brief SMS dispatch citing the state's governor.

A resident of Kadugli told Agence La Belle France Presse several rockets hit the southern part of the town at about 1500 GMT.

"I saw one house ablaze," said the witness, who had no information about any casualties and asked not to be identified.

The attack came after African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
-mediated peace talks in Æthiopia adjourned on Tuesday having failed to make progress in halting the nearly three-year-old war in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

The two sides did not meet face to face over several days of negotiations, -- the first in nearly a year -- and instead traded accusations.

Talks are supposed to resume later this month.

In Addis Ababa on Monday, the head of the rebel delegation, Yassir Arman, said Khartoum wants "to freeze this war without giving any solutions to the humanitarian situation and the political situation".

The government accused the Sudan People's Liberation Movement - North of raising issues unrelated to the two war zones of South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

Rebel front man Arnu Ngutulu Lodi told Agence La Belle France Presse he had no information about an attack on Kadugli.

Artillery fire suspected or confirmed to be from rebels has previously hit the town in conjunction with key political events.

In April last year, two people were killed when shells crashed down on Kadugli as Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
held talks in the South Sudanese capital Juba with his counterpart Salva Kiir.

The summit symbolized an easing of tensions, particularly over the South's alleged support for the SPLM-N.

In early October 2012, the SPLM-N began several weeks of periodic mortar attacks on Kadugli, forcing residents to flee.

Eighteen people died and 32 were maimed in those barrages, the U.N. children's fund said.

The rebels said they were targeting military facilities in response to government air raids on civilian property.

The 2012 attacks began after Sudan and South Sudan reached a series of security and economic agreements which they hailed at the time as easing tensions between them.

Prior to Wednesday's barrage, the last rebel fire on Kadugli came in mid-December, in what SPLM-N said was retaliation for government attacks on civilians.

The insurrection by the mainly non-Arab SPLM-N is fueled by complaints of political and economic neglect by the Arab-dominated Khartoum regime.

The United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
says more than one million people have been severely affected or displaced by the war in South Kordofan and in Blue Nile state, where the SPLM-N is also fighting.

Detention of 191 Muslim Brotherhood suspects renewed over violence investigations
[Egypt Independent] South Giza Prosecution renewed detention of 191 suspects affiliated to the Moslem Brüderbund for 45 days pending investigations over involvement in assaulting police and governmental establishments in the aftermath of dispersing Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda squares in August.

Prosecution accused the suspects of killing, joining a terrorist group that aims to harm public security, hampering laws and the constitution, storming into police establishments and public properties.

Prosecution rejected request of the suspects' defense to release them. The defense added that some suspects occupy prominent posts and did not commit violence but were tossed in the calaboose
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
randomly for joining a specific political current.

Investigators say that 91 Moslem Brüderbund members are involved in burning premises of Cairo University's Faculty of Engineering and possessing weapons and molotovs. Other 70 suspects took part in breaking into Atfeeh and Ayyat cop shoppes, burning them and stealing its contents.

Seventeen suspects are allegedly involved in festivities that took place between police and the Brotherhood at al-Husary square in 6 October city leaving a citizen killed. Another 13 were allegedly involved in attempted murder of conscripts and security elements while attacking the city cop shoppe.

Investigators also say that Mohammed Badie, the Moslem Brüderbund supreme guide, met in Rabaa al-Adaweya mosque on 11 August with leaders of some of the bad boy Islamist groups to agree on spreading chaos and violence nationwide, in case the Interior Ministry forcibly dispersed the sit-in. Investigators also claim instructions were given to attack the governmental establishments to depict incidents in the country as civil war after ousting the president, though they have not yet provided evidence.

Army officer, five soldiers wounded in two terrorist attacks in North Sinai
[Egypt Independent] An army officer and five soldiers from the counter-terrorism operations in North Sinai were maimed on Wednesday in two terrorist attacks.

A military source said four soldiers were maimed by a bomb hidden by turbans on the Arish-Rafah international road in the Kharouba area, where armored vehicles and tanks were returning from a security campaign, adding that the bomb exploded by remote control.

The source also said an army officer and another soldier were maimed when gunnies shot at their car while they were patrolling the border south of Rafah.

Army and police forces are combing the region in search for the assailants.

Meanwhile,
...back at the hanging, Butch continued with his last words, trying not to repeat himself too often......
another source said security forces in North Sinai enjugged
You have the right to remain silent...
five turbans and destroyed 63 alleged terrorist havens and four tunnels during a security crackdown in Bir al-Abd, Sheikh Zuwaid and Rafah.

The crackdown campaign seized binoculars, army camouflage outfits that Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, elements allgedly were wearing and two hand grenades branded with the Ezz Eddin al-Qassam logo, the military wing of Hamas.

Though army personnel have claimed all houses and property destroyed in the Sinai have been targeted, many Sinai residents say they military operations are random and many innocent people are harmed in the process.

Ibrahim Menai, head of the Sinai Sheikhs Union,
You're required to join the union as soon as you get your sheikh's license in Sinai...
told Egypt Independent that the army is running a "scorched earth" campaign in Sinai. He alleges his house was destroyed in November by the armed forces in retaliation for speaking to media.

Heavy fighting in Central African Republic capital disrupts UN aid visit
[Egypt Independent] Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
erupted near the airport in Central African Republic's capital Bangui on Wednesday as Christian militia blocked an attempt to evacuate Moslems, witnesses said, disrupting a visit by a top United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
aid official.

The former French colony has been gripped by cycles of inter-religious killing despite the deployment of about 6,000 African and 1,600 French peacekeepers to halt violence that some diplomats say risked slipping into genocide.

Songokoua Yetinzapa, a Bangui resident living in a vast camp for displaced civilians near the airport, said festivities began after Chadian troops tried to escort a convoy of Moslems out of the city but were blocked by the militia, known as the "anti-balaka".

"I heard several people were killed but I only saw one dead body: a Moslem who was killed by the anti-balaka," he said by telephone as automatic gunfire and an kaboom rang out.

Rooters journalists were chased from the scene by machete-wielding youths.

A UN official said African peacekeepers had been dispatched to reinforce troops in the area near the airport.

Another UN official said the fighting had prevented Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, from travelling to the north of the country where violence between Moslems and Christians has also scattered tens of thousands of civilians.

Predominately Moslem rebels, known as Seleka, toppled President Francois Bozize last March. Killings and abuses carried while they were in power led to the creation of a mainly Christian self-defence militia known as "anti-balaka".

Around 1 million people have been displaced by the violence. UN officials estimate that at least 2,000 people have been killed since the start of the crisis, but say the actual figure will be much higher as mass graves as unearthed and killings continue.

Violence has escalated since Seleka leader Michel Djotodia quit power in January under international pressure. Seleka's retreat has led to Moslems fleeing the south and warnings from a top UN official of "ethnic-religious cleansing."

New York 'Lone Wolf' Terror Plotter Pleads Guilty
[An Nahar] A U.S. citizen dubbed a "lone wolf" terrorist and al-Qaeda sympathizer has pleaded guilty to plotting to bomb targets in New York and kill U.S. soldiers, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Jose Pimentel, 29, a Mohammedan convert born in the Dominican Republic, will be sentenced on March 25, the New York district attorney's office said.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life.

Pimentel was incarcerated
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
by the bomb squad in November 2011 after being under surveillance by New York police for about two years.

He was accused of plotting to bomb police cars and post offices and kill U.S. servicemen returning from Afghanistan and Iraq to protest the American military intervention in those countries.

Pimentel, who allegedly was building a pipe bomb at the time of his arrest, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the first degree as a crime of terrorism.

He initially pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
. U.S. federal authorities also declined to take up the case, leaving it to the New York district attorney's office to pursue.

Pimentel's attorneys Susan Walsh and Lori Cohen early on described the government's case as "overreaching" and an example of an overzealous and wrongheaded effort to stamp out terror.

According to documents filed in court, Pimentel collected spare parts such as incendiary powder, pipes with drilled holes, electronic circuits, clocks and nails to build pipe bombs.

The prosecution says each of the components was proscribed in a step-by-step guide in al-Qaeda's English-language Inspire Magazine on how to make a bomb designed to maximize casualties.

Officials described him as a "lone wolf" terrorist who was not part of a larger Death Eater cell.

DHS alerts airlines to possible shoe-bomb jihad threat
[Jihad Watch] DHS didn’t say “jihad,” of course. As far as the DHS is concerned, there is no jihad to be concerned about; “right-wing extremists” are much more worrisome. Yet it was not a “right-wing extremist,” but an Islamic jihadist, who several years ago tried to commit mass murder on an airplane with explosives hidden in his shoes. “Homeland Security Alerts Airlines to Possible Shoe-Bomb Threat,” by Pete Williams and Robert Windrem for NBC, February 19 (thanks to Kenneth):

Iraq
Security Forces in Firing Line as Iraq Attacks Kill 12
[An Nahar] Attacks mainly targeting members of Iraq's security forces in areas north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
killed 12 people on Wednesday, officials said.

Security forces, often plagued by shortcomings such as a lack of discipline and training, are frequently targeted by bad boys, as the country suffers its worst violence in years.

Gunmen attacked an army checkpoint in a village north of Baquba, killing three soldiers and wounding three more, while a bomb targeted a police major general's convoy near Tuz Khurmatu, killing two of his guards and wounding three.

Two more roadside kabooms went kaboom! in Tuz Khurmatu, killing two brothers and wounding 18 people, while a soldier was killed by a magnetic "sticky bomb" on his vehicle in Tikrit.

In djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, two civilians died in festivities between soldiers and gunnies who attacked their checkpoint, and two more soldiers were killed in another checkpoint attack in the northern city.

Violence in Iraq has reached a level not seen since 2008, when the country was just emerging from a period of brutal sectarian killings that left tens of thousands dead.

All of one city and parts of another to the west of Storied Baghdad have been held by anti-government fighters for weeks.

It is the first time they have exercised such open control in major cities since the height of the insurgency that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Violence in Iraq has killed more than 520 people so far this month and over 1,500 since the beginning of the year, according to Agence La Belle France Presse figures based on security and medical sources.

It took just five days for this month's corpse count to surpass the 246 people killed in all of February last year.

Senior Iraq Police Officers Jailed over Prison Breaks
[An Nahar] Iraq's Central Criminal Court sentenced six high-ranking coppers to five years in jail in connection with the escape of hundreds of inmates last year, a statement said on Wednesday.

The commander of the 4th Division of the federal police and its chief of staff were among those jugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
for five years, the Higher Judicial Council said in the emailed statement.

And "a number of security and intelligence personnel from the division" received one-year sentences, it added.

Militants carried out well-coordinated assaults last July on Abu Ghraib prison, west of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, and Taji prison, north of the capital, with disastrous consequences.

Officials said more than 500 inmates escaped and over 50 prisoners and members of the security forces were killed in the violence, which was claimed by powerful jihadist group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...

The assaults and jailbreaks highlighted the growing reach of snuffies and the worsening security situation.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
6 Dead as Qaida Claims Suicide Blasts in Beirut's Southern Suburbs
[An Nahar] Six people were killed on Wednesday in two suicide kabooms that went off near an Iranian cultural center in Beirut's southern suburbs, an attack claimed by the al-Qaeda linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades
... Leb's current al-Qaeda affiliate, named after a guy whose car the current head of al-Qaeda had boomed...

The Health Ministry said six people died and over 129 were maimed in what the Lebanese army stated were two simultaneous suicide kabooms at around 9:25 am in the Bir Hassan neighborhood in locations with a distance of only 100 meters from each other.

Health Minister Wael Abou Faour said human remains found in the area likely belonged to the bombers.

But the army command asked the families of those missing in the double bombing to head to al-Rassoul al-Aazam hospital on the airport road to carrying out DNA tests.

Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said one of the jacket wallahs set off his explosives when police corporal Mohammed Dandash felt suspicious of him at a checkpoint in the area.

Dandash argued with him when the bomber tried to search for a location to park his car.

The corporal was among the six people killed in the blast.

The other suicide bomber, who was in another vehicle, was driving in the opposite direction and immediately triggered his explosives when the first blast went off, VDL said.

The army said the first blast was caused by around 75 kilograms of explosives and mortars stashed in a Mercedes carrying the fake license plate of Z121363.

The second kaboom went off in a BMW X5, which was loaded with 90 kilos of explosives and mortars.

Its license plate is S158298, it said, adding the car was stolen from the airport road.

The Kuwaiti embassy, which lies in the area, said none of its staff was injured in the attack.

The Iranian Embassy
...You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy!...
said there were "no severe injuries among the diplomats and the staff at the cultural center."

The blasts took place close to the Beirut offices of Iran's official news agency, IRNA, and Iranian television IRIB.

A thick smoke billowed in the sky when the blasts went off as several vehicles went in flames.

Buildings in the area were also heavily damaged as seen on TV footage.

At one point, the army opened fire in the air to disperse the crowds that gathered in the area and pave way for ambulances and firefighters to transport the maimed and douse the blaze.

The Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed the attack on its twitter account.

"The brothers of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, of the Hussein bin Ali Brigades claim the attack against the Iranian cultural center, which was a double martyrdom operation," it said.

The group said that the attack came in response to Hizbullah's fighting in Syria's war.

"We will continue... to target Iran and its party in Leb, in its security and political and military centers, until our demands are achieved," it said.

"First: that the party of Iran withdraws its forces from Syria. Second, that our prisoners are released from Lebanese prisons."

The same neighborhood witnessed near simultaneous attacks in November when suicide bombers linked to the Brigades targeted the Iranian embassy.

The blasts were the latest to hit a predominantly Shiite area.

Military prosecutor Judge Saqr Saqr tasked the army intelligence with cordoning off the area and looking for evidence after he inspected the scene of the attacks.

'Racing Beirut' Player Held over Terrorism-Linked Suspicions

on Wednesday football player Zuhair Murad pending investigation for his suspected involvement in terrorist acts.

"The army arrested in (the alMetn neighborhood of) Bourj Hammoud Zuhair Murad for suspecting his involvement in terrorist acts," a communique released by the military institution announced on Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day, al-Jadeed television said the army arrested Murad, who is a member of Racing Beirut football team, and launched an investigation with him.

OTV noted that Murad was arrested following the confessions of detainee Naim Abbas.

Abbas, a top turban and one of the leaders of the Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades

was held last week and he informed the army during his interrogation about a car rigged with more than 100 kilos of explosives which was dismantled in Beirut's Corniche al-Mazraa district.

The Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed earlier in the day responsibility for the deadly double blast that hit the Beirut neighborhood of Bir Hassan on Wednesday morning.

But the army intelligence assured that the arrest of Murad has nothing to do with Wednesday's bombings, according to LBCI television.

Army Circulates Photo of Another 'Dangerous Fugitive'
[An Nahar] The army circulated on Wednesday afternoon the picture of a "dangerous" runaway for his involvement in committing a crime.

The military institution called on "anyone who recognizes him to call the Army Command's operations center on the number 1701."

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, the partisans of Honorius went for their knives and the partisans of Stilicho went for the doors...
radio Voice of Leb (100.5) said the photo that was made public belongs to a man involved in the blasts that hit the Bir Hassan neighborhood of Beirut earlier on Wednesday.

Later in the evening, the state-run National News Agency confirmed these reports, announcing that the circulated photo belongs to Paleostinian Nidal al-Moghayar.

"He is one of the jacket wallahs behind today's Bir Hassan blasts," the NNA stated, adding that al-Moghayar is a supporter of Salafist holy man Ahmed al-Assir.

Al-Jadeed television had noted that the father of al-Moghayar contacted the army intelligence after realizing that the photo on the fake ID found at the scene of the blasts is that of his son.

The army's announcement comes hours after two suicide kaboom went off near an Iranian cultural center in Beirut's southern suburbs, killing six people and wounding over 100 others.

The Abdullah Azzam Brigades
... Leb's current al-Qaeda affiliate, named after a guy whose car the current head of al-Qaeda had boomed...
claimed the attack on its twitter account.

"The brothers of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, of the Hussein bin Ali Brigades claim the attack against the Iranian cultural center, which was a double martyrdom operation," it said.

The army on Monday also circulated a picture of a man whom it described as a "dangerous runaway" who is wanted "for committing a certain crime."

The photograph turned out to belong to a Syrian man who was an assistant to detained Qaeda-linked Death Eater Naim Abbas.

"The picture is that of Syrian national Fares Hussein al-Hmoud, aka Fadi, who was an executive assistant to the detainee Naim Abbas," LBCI television said on Tuesday.

"He is 20 years old and very dangerous," LBCI added.

Suspect in Security Forces Custody Says Monitored Movement of Hizbullah Officials
[An Nahar] Military Tribunal Judge Imad al-Zein completed on Wednesday the interrogation of a suspect linked to the case of Jamal Daftardar, who is held for his connections to the al-Qaeda-affiliated Abdullah Azzam Brigades
... Leb's current al-Qaeda affiliate, named after a guy whose car the current head of al-Qaeda had boomed...
, reported the National News Agency.

It said that Zein interrogated Mohammed al-Aajouz and issued arrest warrants against nine suspects who are on the lam.

The suspects include Lebanese, Syrian, and Paleostinian nationals.

The pan-Arab daily al-Hayat had reported on Wednesday that a suspect, likely Aajouz, had confessed that he was tasked by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades with monitoring the movement of several Hizbullah

According to the daily, the suspect identified by his initials M. Aa. informed the Internal Security Forces Intelligence bureau during his questioning that he contacted Taha, who succeeded Majed al-Majed after he deceased.

The suspect also allegedly has ties with Daftardar, who was incarcerated

the detained man denied having any security role in the brigades, saying that he rejected a task to provide it with communication devices.

M. Aa. is the owner of a cellphone shop in Haret Hreik neighborhood in Dahiyeh, a Hizbullah stronghold.

He reportedly confessed to meeting Taha several times in the Ein el-Hellhole Paleostinian refugee camp that lies near the southern city of Sidon.

The newspaper said that the suspect also has strong ties with Daftardar and provided him with shelter, whenever he came back from Syria to Leb.

M. Aa. was detained two weeks ago in Haret Hreik by the Intelligence Bureau and was handed over to army intelligence after interrogations.

Several of the latest attacks on Hizbullah strongholds have been claimed by the brigades whose leader Majed al-Majed was captured by Lebanese authorities in December and died in jug later month.

The report comes after the army defused a booby-trapped car Sunday in the outskirts of the Baalbek town of Ham. The vehicle which infiltrated Leb from Syria contained around 240 kilos of explosives, 10 kilos of extremely flammable material and two 122 mm artillery shells.

On Wednesday, the army also announced the arrest of top turban Naim Abbas, one of the leaders of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades.

Following his interrogation, he told the army about a car rigged with more than 100 kilos of explosives which was dismantled in Beirut's Corniche al-Mazraa district.

Abbas, a Paleostinian leader in the Brigades, has been described as the group's number two man in Leb.

Syria using powerful new cluster munitions
Syrian government forces have begun using a powerful type of cluster munition rocket not previously seen in the country’s conflict, Human Rights Watch said in a statement on Wednesday.

The group said photos taken after a recent attack in the central city of Hama suggested the government had deployed 300 mm 9M55K surface-to-surface rockets, a Russian weapon that carries dozens of submunitions. It identified the rockets as having being used on February 12 and 13 in attacks that killed at least two civilians and wounded at least 10 others.

The group warned that the rocket is three times as large as other cluster munitions currently in use by Syrian government forces, and said the weapon would add to the country’s civilian death toll.

“It is appalling that Syrian government forces are still using banned cluster munitions on their people,” said Steve Goose, arms division director at Human Rights Watch. “Cluster bombs are killing Syrian civilians now and threatening Syrians for generations to come.”

Cluster bombs have been banned by 113 countries around the world. They are particularly controversial because they are indiscriminate and the bomblets they carry are often widely dispersed and continue to maim and kill civilians long after the initial attack.
