Afghan Journalists Boycott Coverage of Taliban After Reporter's Killing
[Tolo News] About 100 Afghan journalists declared a boycott of coverage of the Taliban for fifteen days including group's blurbs, statements and claims on Saturday after the bad boy group killed an Afghan news hound and his family in a hotel attack this week.

Sardar Ahmad, his wife and kids were out to dinner at Kabul's luxury Serena Hotel on Thursday night when a group of teenage Talibs entered the hotel with hidden handguns. He, his wife and two of their three children were rubbed out, and one child remains at death's door at a hospital in Kabul.

Five others were killed in the attack, for which the Taliban grabbed credit.

"Once again, the journalism family in Afghanistan mourns the loss of one of its active members in a tragic incident," journalists gathered at the Sardar Mohammed Daud Hospital said in a statement on Saturday. "This incident comes despite the fact that Afghan journalists have assiduously tried to remain neutral in their coverage amid difficult circumstances."

Calling the attack unjustified, the statement said that the journalists had decided to boycott coverage of news related to the Taliban for 15 days, refraining from reaching out to the Taliban for statement or comment, and asked for an explanation of how the Taliban could justify shooting innocent children.

Sardar Ahmad was 40 years old. He joined AFP in 2003 and started working as senior news hound in the Afghan capital Kabul covering all aspects of life including politics and war.

On Friday, the attack received harsh condemnation from around the country. Many friends and colleagues of Sardar spoke out in shock and horror about what befell the promising journalist and his family.

Karzai: Afghanistan Endorses Crimean Right to Decide Their Future
[Tolo News] On Sunday President Karzai announced in a meeting with the US congressional delegation that Afghanistan respects the decision made by the Crimean people to become a part of the Russian Federation. However,
the man who has no enemies isn't anybody and has never done anything...
some analysts interpreted Karzai's statement not in compliance with national interest.

Political commentators believe that Karzai's statement could further escalate tensions between Afghanistan and the west.

"Looking at the current situation, we must pursue a proper policy and deal with the issue in a diplomatic manner," political analyst Mia Gul Waseeq said.

Waseeq said that president Karzai should focus closely to the needs and improvements of Afghanistan instead of involving the country in other political tensions with the US.

During the meeting the US delegation urged Karzai to sign the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA), which will allow US forces to remain in Afghanistan beyond 2014. However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
Karzai declined signing the agreement until the preconditions are honored by the US for him to sign the pact.

Karzai clarified his stance on the Crimea adhesion to Russia days after tensions between Moscow and the western nations increased over disintegration of Crimea from Ukraine.
"The Crimean people decided on their future in the referendum," president Karzai said. "Crimea is part of Russia and Afghanistan respects it."

Last week the Russian embassy in Kabul announced that Moscow looks to play a great role in the future of Afghanistan.

The Crimean issue has led to a political confrontation between Russia and the west. Despite the US and other western countries being the large donors to Afghanistan, president Karzai has backed Russia in the Crimea affair.

Afghanistan hints at Pakistan link to Kabul hotel attack
[DAWN] Afghanistan on Sunday said an attack on a Kabul hotel that left nine civilians dead, including an AFP journalist, was planned "outside the country" in a veiled reference to Pakistain.

The National Security Council (NSC), which is chaired by President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
, also alleged that a Pak diplomat was seen scoping out the corridors of the Serena hotel ahead of the Thursday night raid.

Pakistain was the main supporter of the former Taliban regime in Afghanistan, and Afghan officials have long voiced suspicions about connections between the hardline movement and Islamabad's powerful intelligence services.

The latest accusation could damage relations with Pakistain which is battling its own homegrown Taliban insurgency and is seen as crucial to encouraging the Afghan Taliban to open talks.

Afghanistan made a similar allegation following a deadly restaurant bombing in Kabul in January that killed 21 people including 13 foreigners.

The NSC said the attack on the hotel, which was carried out by four teenage gunnies and claimed by the Taliban, was in fact the work of "foreign intelligence services".

"Witness testimony and preliminary information analysis shows that this terrorist attack was directly executed or carried out by foreign intelligence services outside the country," the council said in a statement.

"Another information of the NDS (National Directorate of Security) shows that earlier when one Pak diplomat entered the Kabul-Serena hotel to use its sport club, he filmed the corridors of the hotel which the hotel staff raised objections to," it added.

The NDS is Afghanistan's main intelligence agency.

The victims of Thursday's attack included AFP journalist Sardar Ahmad, his wife and two of their three children, along with another Afghan and four foreigners -- two Canadians, an American and a Paraguayan.

The couple's youngest son, two-year-old Abozar, survived with bullet wounds to the head, chest and leg and remained in intensive care on Sunday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase...
hundreds of mourners turned out in pouring rain earlier today to lay to rest Sardar Ahmad together with his wife and two of their children who were among the victims of the Taliban attack.

After the funeral, procession made its way through the capital, they were buried side by side at a cemetery on the outskirts of Kabul, as those who came to pay their respects wept under umbrellas.

Secret files into killing of Italian journalist to be declassified
The Italian government has reportedly authorised the declassification of secret files into the death of TV journalist Ilaria Alpi.

She and her Slovenian cameraman Miran Hrovatin were killed in Somalia in 1994. Investigators believe it was to stop them revealing an alleged conspiracy to divert Italian aid to weapon and toxic waste trafficking.

The pair were ambushed and shot in their jeep in Mogadishu by a seven-man commando unit on 20 March 1994. Somali citizen Hashi Omar Hassan was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the double murder.
What about the other six attackers?
A parliamentary committee concluded that Alpi and her cameraman died in a botched kidnapping attempt. But it also said that there were military and diplomatic attempts to suppress some aspects of the case.

Critics said there was not enough evidence to support the claim that Miran and Hrovatin were victims of a kidnapping.

Beida brigade pulls out of Ajdabiya
[Libya Herald] The Hassan Al-Jaber Brigade pulled out of Ajdabiya's Haniya military camp last night after Ibrahim Jadhran agreed that it could take its weapons and equipment back to Beida. It took its 100 vehicles after Maghreb prayers.

On Friday evening, Jadhran's forces clashed with the brigade, trying to capture the equipment and vehicles when it tried to withdraw.

Two other units opposed to Jadhran -- the Jazeera Martyr Brigade and Libya Shield forces both mainly comprised of members of the Zwai tribe and from Ajdabiya --remain at the camp.

"Yesterday, the Cyrenaica Defence Force compelled the Beida-based Ali Hassan Al-Jabber Brigade headed by Colonel Mohammed Bughafir to withdraw from Ajdabiya", Mohammed Al-Shuwaiby, a senior member of the force told the Libya Herald this morning.

He said that the Cyrenaican forces were pressurising the other two military units in the base to surrender.

In yesterday's festivities between Jedhran's forces and the brigades, it is reported that two people were killed in the crossfire.

Local civil society activist Abdulbaset Al-Nazal said today that "things are calm but very tense at the moment, but two non-combatants were killed and more than four houses were damaged in the festivities". He accused a fifth armed force known as the Istanbul Brigade based in the Military War Museum of firing at Red Islamic Thingy officials treating those maimed the fighting. "Miraculously no one was injured," he said.

Elders and mediators have working to in prevent further violence break out.

Al-Shuwaiby meanwhile accused the Hassan Al-Jaber Brigade of betrayal. They were meant to be on the same side as the Jadhran forces, he claimed.

"The Jaber brigade was meant to join Cyrenaica's forces based in the Red Valley (Wadi Al-Ahmar) on the road to Sirte, but they turned out to be planning to hit Cyrenaica's forces from behind. That has been proved by them staying at Ajdabiya rather than heading directly to the Red Valley," Al-Shuwaiby said.

"At the moment, the Cyrenica's defense forces of 400-armed vehicles are besieging the Jazeera brigade and Deraa units in Haniya military camp, as well as the Istanbul brigade in the separate military camp known formally as the Military War Museum," he added.

"Efforts are being made by the Commander of Cyrenaica's Defence Forces, Colonel Bashir Budafera, and the head of Megharba tribe, Salah Al-Ataiwish, to solve the problem and defuse the growing tension in the town."

Clashes in Ajdabiya broke out two days ago, when the Hassan Al-Jaber Brigade from Beida along with the local, largely Zwai, Al-Jazeera Brigade and Libya Shield units moved into the Haniya base.

They had been ordered to the area by the head of the Petroleum Facilities Guards, Idriss Bukhamada.

Hamas Says Israel to Pay 'Very High Price' if It Attacks Gaza
[An Nahar] Gazoo's Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, premier Ismail Haniya warned Israel on Sunday it would pay dearly if it heeded its foreign minister's call to reoccupy the Paleostinian enclave to try to halt rocket attacks.

"We tell the enemy and (Foreign Minister Avigdor) Lieberman who is threatening to reoccupy Gazoo that the time for your threats is over," Haniya told a rally in Gazoo City.

"Any aggression or crime or stupidity you commit will cost you a very high price."

On March 12, during a two-day flare-up in which Gazoo faceless myrmidons fired at least 60 rockets into Israel and the Israelis responded with dozens of air strikes, Lieberman said Israel would have no choice but to reoccupy Gazoo, from which it withdrew all troops and settlers in summer 2005.

"There is no alternative to a full reoccupation of the entire Gazoo Strip," he told Channel 2 television.

Speaking to around 40,000 supporters at a public rally marking 10 years since an Israeli air strike killed Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, Haniya warned Israel that Gazoo faceless myrmidons had "far more capabilities than you imagine."

He also restated his Islamic movement's opposition to peace talks between Israel and the West Bank-based Paleostinian Authority of President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
.

"Stop negotiating with the enemy," he told the PA. "We will not recognize Israel."

The memorial rally for Yassin -- the wheelchair-bound co-founder of Hamas killed on March 22, 2004 -- took place under the watchful eyes of hundreds of Hamas coppers who closed off streets around the central al-Sarraya square and took up positions on rooftops.

Senior Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
officials and members of smaller groups attended the event but Abbas's Fatah, Hamas' bitter rival, stayed away.

The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, sent threatening text messages to Israelis and foreign news hounds in Israel on Saturday, the anniversary of Yassin's killing.

"If Gazoo will be attacked the life of the Zionists will be hell" and "In the next war all the Land of Paleostine will return," some read.

"Al-Qassam has chosen you to be the next Shalit," another message stated, referring to Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was kidnapped and held in Gazoo for five years until Hamas freed him in exchange for more than 1,000 Paleostinian prisoners.

The email account of an Israeli security affairs newsletter, Israel Defense, was hacked and an email posted on Yassin's killing. "We don't forget the blood of our sheikh, We swear again to take Dire Revenge™, and this time by taking off the head of your leaders," it said.

#2  Hamas, themselves, don't even expect to be taken seriously. What is it with monkeys waving sticks?

Don't they learn? And why are the Israelis so tolerant and nice about "measured" responses? If the United States had some political group like Hamas in Iowa, say, or Kansas who fired rockets into neighboring Indiana or somewhere scenic and threatened the US with dire consequence if we even thought about sending in troops to clean them out ( permanently ) what would the US do?

Why are they STILL around? Take the entire population and strip them naked and process them. Hands behind your head and next stop the Nefud and the only water you get is in an Israeli truck next week. Make do until then.

WHY are the Israelis so NICE?

And do YOU miss Yassin? Remember how they put him in several zip-lock sandwich bags...the parts they actually found around his smoking wheelchair, I mean. I thought that very considerate of the Israelis. Very thoughtful.

Death toll still rising long after MNLF siege
Loss of life continues six months after a standoff between Philippine government forces and a splinter Moro militant group, casting a shadow over this week's signing of a comprehensive Bangsamoro peace accord. It is not because of violence, but of disease throughout congested encampments and the refusal of local authorities to allow the evacuees to return to their homes long after the emergency spawned by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) uprising had passed.

The military says nine civilians were killed in the three weeks of fighting in September last year that also left 23 soldiers and policemen and 100 MNLF fighters dead. More than 10,000 houses were burned in nine villages, forcing 116,000 people to flee their homes.

About half of those who were displaced have gone back to their residences. Around 20,000 are in nine evacuation centers facing appalling conditions and 38,000 are in the homes of relatives or friends. Since the end of the fighting, at least 102 more deaths have been recorded by a UN-led cluster.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
And the Iranian explanation for the fake aircraft carrier is . . .
A replica of a U.S. aircraft carrier spotted near the coast of Iran is nothing more sinister than a movie set, Iranian media said on Sunday.

The New York Times, quoting U.S. intelligence, said last week that the Iranians were building a mock-up of a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, possibly so they could then blow it up for propaganda purposes.

Satellite photos showed what looked like one of the U.S. Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, complete with planes, rising from Iran's Gachin shipyard, near the port of Bandar Abbas.

Iranian newspapers said it was "part of the decor" of a movie being made by Iranian director Nader Talebzadeh on the 1988 shooting down of an Iran Air civilian plane by the USS Vincennes. The United States says the downing of the plane, which killed all 290 passengers and crew, was an accident.

"The issue has turned into a good excuse for another wave of hype against Iran," said the Alef news website which carries views close to the official line in Iran.

"Without any proof or real basis, Western media have jumped again to paint a more negative picture of Iran."

A spokesman for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain acknowledged that the replica was "more akin to a Hollywood set than a warship."

"We know it's not an actual aircraft carrier. It's made to look like one of ours ... but makes us wonder: what is it all for?" Jason Salata told Reuters by telephone.

"We've seen them make target barges before and tow them and shoot them out as missile exercises and use it for state-run media. This one is a little bit of a head-scratcher. If you're spending resources on this, what would it be for?"
Perhaps it has a dual use? These guys are experts at this if nothing else.
Iranian officials were not available to comment.
Maybe even a triple use.

...Leb Salafist holy man with the usual grouch against Shiites. Currently on the run, he seems intent on reigniting the Leb civil war. Just another Salafist holy man with a big beard and soullesss dead zombie eyes...
appeared Sunday in a video that was published on his official Twitter page, his first audiovisual recording since the Abra battle.

"Leb is under the full hegemony of the Iranian scheme through Halesh (Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
) and the AMAL Movement," Asir says in the video.

It was not immediately clear when the audiovisual message was recorded. It comes amid unconfirmed reports claiming that the holy man was killed or captured as the Syrian army and Hizbullah retook Syria's Yabrud area from rebel hands.

The holy man described the Lebanese Army as "the first and most important tool" of Hizbullah on the Lebanese domestic scene, slamming Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji as a "criminal."

"You are totally aware that there are death squads -- similar to the death squads of the criminal Maliki in Iraq -- inside the military institution, which are liquidating our youths, such as Khaled Hmayyed and Abou Mazen," Asir added, addressing the army's "Sunni" officers and soldiers and urging them to defect.

Commenting on the indictments that were issued on February 28, in which Judge Riyad Abu Ghida demanded the death penalty against him and 56 other people over the Abra festivities, Asir ridiculed the charges and accused Sidon MP Bahia Hariri of suppressing the families of the Abra detainees.

and their supporters, Asir added: "It will be impossible to continue to coexist with you before 'your heads are smashed' and, God willing, we will exert efforts to that end."

In June 2013, Asir's supporters opened fire on an army checkpoint near the holy man's headquarters in the Sidon suburb of Abra. The attack and the fierce festivities that ensued left around 18 soldiers and more than 20 gunnies dead.

The gunbattles concentrated in the area of the Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque and nearby buildings in Abra.

Jumblat Slams Eid, Tripoli Leaders over Clashes

did not achieve a victory in Syria with Yabrud's capture.

"Everyone is in a dilemma in Tripoli ... I advise Rifaat Eid not to be reckless," Jumblat said during an interview on al-Jadeed television.

"Rifaat Eid is transgressing against Tripoli and his own sect ... He is taking his sect to destruction," he added.

But the PSP leader also criticized Tripoli's ministers and politicians, accusing them of preventing the army from deploying in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood.

"The army must enter into both Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh but Tripoli's ministers must allow the army to enter Bab al-Tabbaneh. Tripoli's politicians must stop providing cover for the leaders of fighting frontiers," said Jumblat.

Syria accuses Turkey of 'aggression' after jet downed
[DAWN] Syria accused Ankara of "flagrant aggression" Sunday after Turkish forces shot down a warplane near the border, raising tensions as Syrian loyalists and rebels battle to control a frontier crossing.

Relations between the neighbouring states have collapsed during the Syrian conflict with Ankara squarely backing rebels trying to topple Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...

It was the most serious incident since Turkish warplanes last September downed a Syrian helicopter that Ankara said was two kilometres (more than a mile) inside its airspace.

A Syrian military source said Sunday Turkey shot down the warplane "in a flagrant act of aggression that is evidence of (Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip) Erdogan's support for terrorist groups."

The aircraft "was chasing terrorist groups inside Syrian territory at Kasab," said the source, referring to the disputed border crossing. The pilot was able to eject.

Syrian troops and rebels have been locked in deadly fighting since Friday for control of Kasab in the northern province of Latakia, a regime stronghold.

The battle erupted after three jihadist groups, including al Qaeda's Syria affiliate Al-Nusra Front, announced the launch of an offensive Tuesday in Latakia dubbed "Anfal," or "spoils of war."

In a move expected to further exacerbate tensions, Erdogan praised Turkey's military for downing the warplane and warned Syria against any response.

"I congratulate the chief of general staff, the armed forces and those honourable pilots... I congratulate our air forces," said Erdogan.

"Our response will be heavy if you violate our airspace," he warned Damascus.

Turkish media reported that the military told two Syrian jets approaching the border that they should turn away, but scrambled F-16 jets when one ignored the warning.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the plane was bombing rebels fighting to seize Kasab when it was hit, catching fire and crashing inside Syrian territory.

The monitor said jihadists had overrun the crossing but were still battling loyalist forces in the area and in nearby Kasab town. It also said the government has sent military reinforcements.

The battle for Kasab erupted on Friday and at least 80 fighters on both sides have been killed.
