'Friendly Fire' may be responsible for the death of 5 U.S. servicemen in AFG
Update from Glenmore posted separately at 9:46 ET:
War sucks.
[CNN] Five American service members were killed in southern Afghanistan when a coalition jet, called in to help ward off a Taliban attack, mistakenly bombed them, an Afghan official said Tuesday.

According to NATO, the troops were conducting a security operation. Such operations have been stepped up ahead of Afghanistan's presidential runoff election, which will take place Saturday.

The service members' unit came in contact with enemy forces. That's when the casualties occurred, a U.S. military official told CNN. "There is the possibility that fratricide may have been involved," he said. The incident is under investigation.

Rival extremists fight it out in Derna
[MAGHAREBIA] Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active...
and the Abu Slim Martyrs Brigade are in a bloody battle for control of Derna. Fighting between the rival Libyan forces of Evil erupted Friday night (June 6th).

Moutaz Ahmed Mrash, a leading figure of both al-Qaeda and Ansar al-Sharia, was hit by a hail of bullets in front of his home.

Car bombs targeted Ansar al-Sharia leader Omar Al-Shalali and Abu Slim Martyrs Brigade commander Ameen Al-Kabayli. Other kabooms rocked the houses the two brigades' members.

The violence followed the liquidation of Abu Slim commander Mohammed Abu Bilal in a boom-mobileing last month that was blamed on Ansar al-Sharia.

"Derna is controlled by al-Qaeda," said Nadia Fathia al-Obeidi, a doctor at Derna hospital. "This organization is led by Sofian ben Qumu and the so-called Army of the Islamic Shura."

Ahmed Jaouhari, a 25-year-old university student, described the kabooms that hit Derna on Friday evening.

"Salah Bouzid from Ansar al-Sharia survived an liquidation attempt. He was known as a professional expert in armed robberies and car theft. His home in the district of bin Nasser on the east coast behind the Loloa hotel was targeted. Gunmen placed a rigged briefcase outside his home," Jaouhari said.

Eyewitness Amjad Mansoor Hassan, a 23-year-old law student, said: "A car belonging to Ameen Al-Kabayli, a member of Ansar al-Sharia, went kaboom! while he was inside the house. The kaboom did not cause any injuries."

He added that Ansar al-Sharia targeted elements of the Abu Slim Martyrs Brigade in the city of Derna on Friday evening. A rigged bag was placed next to the house of Jadallah Mohammed Taher al-Mansouri, near the former shoe factory. The blast damaged the house.

The home of Ali Chairi Habash, affiliated with Abu Slim Martyrs Brigade, was also targeted, he said. Unknown gunnies placed a rigged suitcase near the wall of his residence in the eastern Chiha district without causing casualties.

"The festivities are very strong in Derna with all types of weapons between the Abu Slim Martyrs Brigade and al-Qaeda," teacher Sarah Belkassem said. "They targeted the homes of its members, which caused panic and fear in the hearts of the residents."

Trader Musa Mohammed said that the fighting was most intense in Derna between forces of Evil and those that were even more extreme. "I think 'Operation Dignity' shook them and sent them into panic and fear," he added.

Randa Massoud, 43-year-old housewife and mother of four, appealed to the army and police, saying, "We are tired of fear, expecting at any moment someone to enter my house and take my kids from me. They break into houses and kill everyone working for the army and police. They also take maidens of tender years and marry them forcibly to krazed killer emirs living in the mountains."

"I am tired of my fear for my kids," she added in tears. "My nerves collapsed and I can no longer endure the fear taking place in my city, Derna. How can my kids and I go out to shop and buy our needs? We are scared even inside our house. We are not safe for fear of break-ins."

"Terror and repression are still going on in Derna," she said.

Libyan court says PM's election invalid, raising hopes of end to stalemate
[REUTERS] Libya's Supreme Court ruled on Monday that parliament's election of Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeq a month ago was unconstitutional, a ruling that could reduce volatile political tensions in the major OPEC member state.

It also raised hope that some oil ports occupied for 10 months by rebels in Libya's east will reopen. In April, rebels signed an accord with the government of Maiteeq's predecessor to unblock the vital Mediterranean ports but its implementation stalled when they refused to deal with Maiteeq, a businessman.

Port rebel leader Ibrahim Jathran welcomed the Supreme Court ruling, according to a statement.

Maiteeq said he would accept the court decision, which reinstates Abdullah al-Thinni as caretaker premier, according to parliament's deputy speaker.

gunnies have reportedly kidnapped 20 women from a nomadic settlement in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
near the town of Chibok, where the Islamic bully boyz kidnapped more than 300 schoolgirls and young women on April 15.

Alhaji Tar, a member of the vigilante groups set up to resist Boko Haram's attacks, said the men arrived at noon Thursday in the Garkin Fulani settlement and forced the women to enter their vehicles at gunpoint. He says they drove away to an unknown location in the remote stretch of Borno state.

Tar said the group also took three young men who tried to stop the kidnapping.

"We tried to go after them when the news got to us about three hours later, but the vehicles we have could not go far, and the report came to us a little bit late," he said.

In another incident, the Defense Headquarters said Monday that troops prevented raids by Boko Haram this weekend on villages in Borno and neighboring Adamawa state. Soldiers killed more than 50 bully boyz on Saturday night as they were on their way to attack communities, defense front man Chris Oluklade said in an emailed statement.

The Nigerian military has come under rising criticism from Nigerians who say they're not protected by the security forces, left to fend off attacks by Boko Haram on their own.

Saudi Court Jails 33 over 'Terror' Cell
[An Nahar] A Saudi special court placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
33 people for up to 30 years after finding them guilty of "forming a terror cell" among other charges, state news agency SPA reported Monday.

The 33 are part of a group of 71 people who have been on trial since Sunday for various charges including accusing the kingdom's rulers of "infidelity," said SPA

They were also convicted of "smuggling a number of prisoners" out of jail as well as "targeting holy mans, princes, and members of the security forces," the agency said.

Their prison terms range from six months to 30 years.

The cell members were tossed in the calaboose
Please don't kill me!
when security forces raided their hideout in Riyadh in 2007 in an operation that left one member of the security forces and six of the group dead.

Three of the 71 defendants have been acquitted, and some alleged members of the cell have been released on bail pending their trial, media reported.

It is unclear if the court will continue the trial of the remaining 35 defendants.

The trial is the latest in a series of prosecutions that began in July 2011 for alleged offenses committed during the peak of al-Qaeda violence in the kingdom between 2003 and 2006.

Saudi Condemns Two to Death over Shiite Unrest
[An Nahar] A Saudi court on Monday sentenced two people to death and placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
a third for 25 years after they were convicted of violence during Shiite protests, state media reported.

Scores of Shiites are on trial in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
after they were detained for involvement in anti-regime protests staged in oil-rich Eastern Province since February 2011.

The two defendants sentenced to death by a court in Jeddah were convicted of "taking part in forming a terrorist group" and "attacking security forces, as well as public and private property," said the official SPA news agency.

One of the two was also found guilty of leading and inciting protests in the restive Shiite village of Awamiya, and firing at security forces, as well as writing anti-regime graffiti on walls, it added.

Among other charges linked to the unrest, the unnamed trio were also convicted of throwing petrol bombs at police vehicles and setting alight one of them, in addition to taking part in anti-regime protests.

It was unclear if there were police casualties in any of the attacks for which they were found guilty.

The verdicts are subject to appeal within 30 days.

The same special court issued the first death sentence to a defendant involved in the Shiite protests on May 26, a day before sentencing another protester to death.

Three FC personnel, child killed in N Waziristan checkpost attack
[DAWN] At least three paramilitary soldiers and a child were killed and many others injured in a suicide kaboom near Boya checkpost on Datta Khel road in North Wazoo Agency, military officials confirmed on Monday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that at least four people including three soldiers and a child were killed in the vehicle bound suicide attack on the security checkpost.

A statement issued to the media further said that at least 12 people including two women have also been injured in the blast.

Official sources said that the security personnel were establishing a small checkpoint near Boya checkpost on main Datta Khel road when the suspected jacket wallah rammed his vehicle into the checkpoint.

The security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation in the area while Datta Khel road has been closed for all traffic.

North Waziristan is one of the seven regions in Pakistain's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) governed by tribal laws.

An krazed killer insurgency led by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) plagues the region and the area is known to be infested with murderous Moslems, including those from al Qaeda and other armed murderous Moslem organizations.

Two brothers killed in 'sectarian attack'
[DAWN] KARACHI: Two young brothers were rubbed out in a suspected sectarian attack in Nazimabad on Monday evening, Gulbahar police said.

They added that Mohammed Bashir, 35, and Mohammed Nazir, 28, were riding a cycle of violence when armed motorcyclists attacked them close to the 'Matric Board Office' near a fuel station. The maimed brothers were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced Bashir as dead on arrival while Nazir died soon after arrival, said additional police surgeon Dr Abdul Haq.

The murder of the brothers appeared to be an outcome of sectarianism, said Gulbahar DSP Aijazuddin.

Bashir was a teacher at the Iranian Cultural Centre, where his brother was an employee, said a spokesperson for the Majlis-e- Wahdat-e-Moslemeen.

Condemning the 'assassination' of the brothers, the MWM official said the bodies were being sent to their native place in Gilgit after funeral prayers here.

The city police chief 'suspended/reverted' the Gulbahar SHO for his failure to curb 'sectarian killings' in the area, said a police spokesperson.

... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
in North Wazoo Agency on Monday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations, the military's media wing, said the attacker smashed his vehicle into the Boya checkpost on Miranshah-Datakhel road, killing three soldiers and injuring 10 others, including two women.

But an official of the political administration put the number of the maimed women at five who were airlifted to Bannu by a military helicopter. A mud house adjacent to the checkpost had collapsed by the impact of the blast, leaving the women injured, he said.

(A Rooters report claimed that four soldiers had been killed and seven others maimed in the attack. "The corpse count could increase," a military official said.)

Abu Baseer, a front man for the Ansarul Mujahideen turban organization, grabbed credit for the assault. He told Dawn by phone from an unspecified location that the attack had been carried out in retaliation for recent air strikes in North Waziristan.

The group often owns up to attacks on security forces in tribal areas.

Spokesman for the Frontier Corps (FC) Khan Wasey told Dawn.com that Iranian border guards fired 24 rockets in Balochistan's Panjgur district.

"Loud kabooms rocked the entire Pak-Iran border area," Wasey said. He stated, however, that the FC personnel's timely retaliation silenced the Iranian side and that there was no loss of life.

The local administration lodged a protest with the Iranian authorities regarding the latest skirmish.

Iranian border guards have repeatedly fired rockets into Pak territory, creating panic among people living in bordering areas with Iran.

Hafiz Gul Bahadur group extends ceasefire to June 20
[DAWN] The North Wazristan Taliban Shura led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur
...a member of the Madda Khel clan of the Uthmanzai Waziris. Educated in a Deobandi madrassa located in Multan, he is affiliated with the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) political party. Upon the formation of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in December 2007, he was announced as the group's overall naib amir under Baitullah Mehsud, who was based in South Wazoo, but has largely distanced himself from the TTP due to rivalries with the Mehsuds and disagreements about the TTP's attacks against the Pak state..
has extended the ceasefire till June 20 and also assured the government to carry out probe into the Boya checkpost suicide kaboom which left at least three FC soldiers and a child dead earlier on Monday.

Ahmedullah Ahmedi, the front man of North Wazoo Taliban in a statement issued to the media said that after a meeting with the grand jirga of North Wazristan, the shura has decided to extend the ceasefire deadline by ten days.

Following massive Arclight airstrikes by Pak jet fighters that killed at least 60 gunnies in North Waziristan last month, Taliban capos met to reconsider a non-aggression treaty with the government. The Taliban group later warned the rustics to flee the area by June 10 and also warned to take up arms against the Pak security forces.

The front man also condemned the attack on Boya checkpost on Monday and said the Taliban Shura would probe into the incident and take action against the culprits.

Ahmedi further said that the Taliban shura would have more sittings with the jirga during this period to resolve the issue.

The statement came days after tribal elders from North Waziristan were asked by Governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

29 dead, 26 hurt as Taliban storm Pakistan airport
ISLAMABAD: At least 29 people were killed and 26 others were injured after heavily-armed terrorists disguised as security forces stormed Karachi airport - Pakistan's busiest - on Sunday night and again exposed the vulnerability of the nuclear-armed country's vital installations.

The latest Pakistani Taliban assault was the most daring since they had struck at a naval base in Karachi in May 2011. It came despite a split within the Taliban ranks and demonstrated their ability to carry out coordinated attacks at will.

Officials said the slain included 10 attackers, who stormed the airport just before midnight disguised as Airport Security Force (ASF) personnel. Explosions and gunfire continued across the airport throughout the night. But no aircraft was damaged and passengers were evacuated and all flights diverted. The siege ended at dawn on Monday when all attackers were killed.

Karachi's Jinnah Hospital spokesperson Seemi Jamali said 19 bodies were brought there. They included 11 airport security personnel, a paramilitary ranger, a civil aviation official and five Pakistan International Airlines employees. "Another 26 people were wounded with five of them critical,' she said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened more assaults to send a message to the government. "We are still alive and strong enough to react to the killings of innocent people in aerial strikes on their villages," said Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid.

He said the attack on the airport was aimed to avenge slain Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud's killing in a US drone attack in November last year. Shahid dismissed the government's talks' offer.

"Pakistan used peace talks as a tool of war. It killed hundreds of innocent tribal women and children. This is our first attack to avenge the death of Hakimullah Mehsud," he said. "We are yet to avenge deaths of hundreds of innocent tribal women and children in Pakistani air strikes.'

The Taliban spokesman warned it is just the beginning. "We have taken revenge for one, we have to take revenge for hundreds," he said. "We will continue carrying out such attacks.'

In Karachi, paramilitary Pakistani Rangers director general Maj Gen Rizwan Akhtar said the attackers appeared to be of Uzbek, Tajik and Afghan origin. "They came in two groups of five each. While seven of them were killed by the security forces, three attackers blew themselves up.'

Civil Aviation Authority officials said the terrorists attacked the airport's old terminal mostly used for cargo and private VIP flights. They were killed before they could reach the main terminal.

An intelligence official said it appeared the terrorists aimed to hijack a plane that passengers were boarding at the main terminal.

Sources said an initial investigation report submitted to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif revealed the terrorists wanted to destroy airplanes and paralyze air traffic operations.

A Rangers' officer told reporters the attackers were carrying Indian weapons. But Maj Gen Akhtar dismissed alleged Indian involvement as "too early and premature'.

But Jamat-ud-Dawah
An organization occupying prime space on the UN list of entities and organizations known to support Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
chief Hafiz Saeed blamed India for the attack. "(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's new security team is behind this act of war by India. Nation knows the real enemy," he tweeted.
Yes they certainly do you di*khead.
He earlier retweeted a JuD tweet calling "the spectacle" at the Karachi airport "Modi's plan against Pakistan'. The tweet called for "direct response of needless appeasement of new 'Hindutva' Government".

In a separate tweet, Saeed asked the Pakistan government to "end exchange of gifts with India; show spine".
The real purpose of this attack may be to raise the stakes for Nawaz Sharif if he redirects military efforts from India to Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Pakistan. This attack would put a steel rod up my back.

Iraq
Mosul Falls to Insurgency
This seems like a rather sudden and major increase in 'insurgency' capability - where did it come from?
Will Iran come to the 'rescue' (subjugation) of the Iraqi Shia? Or have they been spread too thin by Syria/Lebanon, Pakistan, & internal troubles?

Insurgents seized control early Tuesday of most of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, including the provincial government headquarters, offering a powerful demonstration of the mounting threat posed by extremists to Iraq's teetering stability.

Fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, overran the entire western bank of the city overnight after Iraqi soldiers and police apparently fled their posts, in some instances discarding their uniforms as they sought to escape the advance of the militants.

The speed with which one of Iraq's biggest cities has fallen under militant control is striking and suggests the U.S.-trained Iraqi security forces are even more vulnerable than had previously been thought.

The capture of the airport, which had served as a major hub for the U.S. military, could not be independently confirmed, but Nujaifi said it had been seized and that all of the aircraft there also were captured.
This is very bad: the Iraqi soldiers broke and ran. They left behind a large cache of American-supplied weapons which now are in the hands of the ISIS. And Mosul is a big city; hard to write this off.

#1  Thank you Obama for stabbing the only democratic Arab nation in the back and allowing radical terrorists to take over.

#2  Always was a nasty place, that Mosul. Saddam's sons held out there until they met their end.... Allan be praised.

#3  Have a feeling a great deal of the "Security Forces" suddenly donned masks, turning into "Militants". I don't see any way this happened on such a large scale without a mass desertion being planned for years. We've seen this type of thing recently with Boko-Haram.

#4  The western bank is the Arab part of the city (the part where Saddam evicted the Kurds and gave the empty homes to Sunni Arabs). Unfortunately that includes the homes of many Christian Arabs.

The east bank is still in Kurdish hands. I suspect the battle between the Kurds and the Arabs is the real reason the west bank fell so easily.

#5  Desertion by the Iraqi Army conscripts in the region. Its a shame they didn't have the opportunity of building a solid, professional military with a solid professional secular cadre. Wait... they did. Until Obama bailed out way too soon and too fast for "Peace in our time" progressive's political gains.

#6  That being said, time to put money and support behind the Kurds, and eventually an independent Kurdistan (screw the racist Turks).

#7  I second #6. The Kurds are muslim but they are not arabs.

#1  Iraqi Parliament speaker Usama al-Nujaifi said the terrorists are now setting their sight on Salahuddin, a province just north of Baghdad.

“They have already seized the Shergat air base in Salahuddin”, Nujaifi said, adding that terrorists laid their hands on weapon depots, heavy equipment and army helicopters from abandoned army bases in Mosul.

terrific. Thanks, Champ and Hillary. Another Foreign Policy Success™

#2  Obama and Hillary bailed oui on Iraq in 2011 just in time for the 2012 election. No consideration given to any real-world consequences other than power politics in the US. They were warned. Who will now hold them responsible for this? Not the lapdog US press apparently.

#3  Jeebus, iff this was still the Cold War or pre-911, the US would already be bombing the hell out of the ISIS/ISIL.

Double bombing at Kurdish party office kills 13 northeast of Baghdad
[FOXNEWS] Authorities in Iraq say a double bombing at a Kurdish party office has killed 13 people in a town northeast of Storied Baghdad.

Police officials say the attack took place Sunday morning when a jacket wallah set off his explosive vest at the gate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan office in Jalula, 125 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of Storied Baghdad.

Minutes later, a boom-mobile went kaboom! near the building as security forces arrived to inspect the scene of the first blast. Police put the corpse count for both kabooms at 13 killed and 60 maimed.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Arrest Warrant Issued for Bakri on Multiple Terror Charges
[An Nahar] First Military Examining Magistrate Riyad Abu Ghida on Monday issued an arrest warrant for detained radical holy man Sheikh Omar Bakri on multiple terror charges, state-run National News Agency reported.

Abu Ghida interrogated Bakri regarding charges of "belonging to armed terrorist groups; training bully boyz on arms and explosives; seeking to create an Islamic emirate in the North; and delivering religious sermons containing insults against the state and the army and incitement to civil war," NNA said.

On Tuesday, the military prosecutor had charged Bakri, who was tossed in the slammer

last month, with belonging to terrorist organizations and plotting to establish an Islamic state.

The krazed killer Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
, an al-Qaeda breakaway group, is among the groups Bakri is accused of belonging to, according to NNA.

The Lebanese authorities had issued an arrest warrant for Bakri for involvement in the festivities in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
but he fled to an unknown destination in April.

He was apprehended by the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau at his residence in the Mount Leb town of Aley on May 25.

Bakri lived in Britannia for almost 20 years before settling in Leb in 2005 after he was banned from London under government curbs following the underground and bus bombings that year.

The Syrian-born holy man, who also holds Lebanese nationality, has denied he has any links to al-Qaeda although he said he believed in "the same ideology."
