Libya Islamists Press Advance on Key Oil Region
[AnNahar] Islamist fighters clashed with pro-government forces for the second consecutive day Sunday as they pressed an advance on a key oil region in eastern Libya, sources on both sides reported.

Separately, at least four Fajr Libya holy warriors were killed and 10 maimed in an air strike by pro-government forces near the Ras Jedir border crossing with Tunisia, a military source said.

Fajr Libya, an anti-government coalition of Islamist militias, said its men were advancing on al-Sidra oil terminal in al-Hilal region, which is also home to the Ras Lanuf and Brega terminals.

A news agency linked to the group quoted Islamist commander Tareq Shanina as saying his men "advanced toward al-Sidra" and were coming under air attack from pro-government forces.

Shanina said Fajr Libya fired anti-aircraft guns in response.

An official with a unit guarding oil installations said festivities were underway around al-Sidra, Libya's largest oil terminal.

On Saturday, Fajr Libya launched a three-pronged attack to seize control of al-Hilal but pro-government forces backed by air force jets and helicopters repelled the assault.

The air raids were followed by festivities on the ground that tapered off in the evening only to resume again Sunday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from Sunday's fighting. On Saturday five government soldiers were maimed and Fajr Libya reporting that two of its fighters had been killed.

The source, who declined to be named, said the raid was carried out by forces loyal to anti-Islamist ex-general Khalifa Haftar

In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. 2 Egypt Policemen Killed in Sinai Drive-by Shooting
[AnNahar] Gunmen killed two Egyptian coppers in a drive-by shooting in the Sinai Peninsula on Sunday, security and medical officials said.

The attack occurred near a police post in the town of El-Arish, scene of frequent attacks by Islamist holy warriors on security forces, as the two coppers made their way to work.

One policeman was struck down in his prime, while the other succumbed to his wounds later at a military hospital.

France Says It Has 'Neutralized' 200 Jihadists in Sahel
When the French military concentrate, they get things done very nicely, indeed. Tres bien!
[AnNahar] French forces have either killed or captured nearly 200 jihadists in the Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
of west Africa in the past year, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Sunday.

"There have been many operations, nearly 200 bully boyz have been neutralized in a year, around 50 since August" when La Belle France launched a massive counter-terrorism operation across five nations in the semi-arid Sahel, Le Drian told French radio and television.

In separate comments to Jeune Afrique magazine in an interview to appear Monday, he said some important leaders were among those killed or captured, mostly in Mali and Niger.

In what was seen as a massive blow to Islamist fighters, the French army on Thursday said it had killed Ahmed el Tilemsi, the Malian leader of the notorious Algerian jihadist Mokhtar Belmokhtar's Al-Murabitoun group.

The French military in 2013 routed radical Islamist groups who had seized large swathes of northern Mali, and in August this year launched Operation Barkhane as part of a wider counter-terrorism operation.

A total of 3,000 troops are now taking part in the operation across Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
and Chad, to track and combat Islamist forces of Evil with fighter aircraft, helicopters and drones.

They are currently building an advance base close to the Libyan border in the north of Niger.

Le Drian said that the south of Libya had become a hub for jihadists operating in the region.

"Southern Libya has become a place of recovery, a petrol station, a place of rest, re-organization and training for a number of terrorist groups," he said in the interview broadcast on Radio La Belle France Internationale and TV5 Monde.

"The hunt for bully boyz always leads to the Libyan border. The country is in chaos."

"The international community must take the necessary steps with the countries concerned," Le Drian said, not ruling out military action there.

But first there would have to be a political solution in Libya, he said, with the country torn apart by a war between two rival governments. "That will come about through the pacification of the whole of Libya."

Arabia
Rebels expand territory in Sanaa
Yemen's Shiite rebels defeated rival tribesmen and took control of a northern district of the capital on Saturday, expanding their control of the city, their spokesman said, the Associated Press reported. Mohammed Abdel-Salam, spokesman of the rebels known as Houthis, said the forces took control of Arhab, a district of greater Sanaa. The group already controls most of the capital and several other cities.

Military and tribal officials said the Houthis used tanks and artillery to shell houses and neighborhoods of rival tribes. The fighting left dozens dead, including 12 tribesmen, they added. Houthis usually refrain from announcing deaths among their ranks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Meanwhile the north, a Yemeni border guard shot and killed three suspected militants wearing women's veils as they tried to cross into Saudi Arabia with a male driver, security officials said.

Soldiers at the Hawdh area's border crossing had sent the car to a nearby police station to have policewomen check its occupants' identities.

The officials said one of the disguised men shot a soldier who had boarded the car, slightly wounding him. He immediately opened fire with an automatic rifle in response, killing the three and injuring the driver, who later confessed that he and the three disguised men are al-Qaida members who had planned to attack Saudi border guards by suicide bombing.

The officials said the driver told the border guards he was taking his family to visit Saudi Arabia for the waters.

In July, three al-Qaida militants and two border guards were killed in a car bomb attack and fighting at another border post, while other gunmen managed to enter Saudi Arabia in two cars.

  • Police moved in firing automatic weapons and throwing grenades as hostages were seen fleeing in terror from cafe

  • Live TV footage showed hostages running frantically from the cafe at shortly after 2 am in small groups

  • It came hours after Man Haron Monis was named as the gunman holding people hostage in a Sydney café

  • Iranian refugee, 50, was charged with accessory in the murder of his ex-wife

  • He was also facing multiple charges of sexual assault while claiming to be a 'spiritual healer'

  • Monis received 300 community service hours for sending hate mail to the families of Australian dead soldiers

  • The siege follows an unsuccessful attempt to have these charges overturned in the High Court on Friday

Shiite may be Sydney siege hostage taker
This may just some clueless journo, but a surprise if correct.
The man police believe is responsible for the siege at the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Sydney's Martin Place is Iranian cleric Man Haron Monis. He is currently on bail for a string of violent offences, including being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife. Monis is also facing more than 40 sexual and indecent assault charges and has a conviction for sending offensive letters to the families of deceased Australian soldiers. His former lawyer, Manny Conditsis, said Monis was an isolated figure who was acting alone.

"His ideology is just so strong and so powerful that it clouds his vision for common sense and objectiveness," he said.

Sydney siege live: Loud explosions heard as police storm Lindt cafe

    Updated 8 minutes ago Mon 15 Dec 2014, 10:38am

Police have stormed the Lindt cafe in Sydney after an intense period of loud explosions or gunshots and flashes of lights.

Several ambulances are on the scene.

Earlier, police identified the man behind the siege as Iranian cleric Man Haron Monis.

Monis has been holding an unknown number of people hostage at the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Sydney's Martin Place since Monday morning.

Three people emerged from the building about 4:00pm (AEDT) and they were followed by another two an hour later.

Hostages were earlier seen pressing a black flag with Arabic text against the cafe's windows.

Monis is on bail for a string of violent offences and has a conviction for sending offensive letters to the families of deceased soldiers.

#11  As I indicated in another post earlier, based on the flag he was displaying at the Australian cafe, the terrorist is a member of the Hizb ut-Tahrir international Islamic Group.

Their "About Us" statement from their web site: (Link)

"Hizb ut-Tahrir is a political party whose ideology is Islam. Its objective is to resume the Islamic way of life by establishing an Islamic State that executes the systems of Islam and carries its call to the world. Hizb ut-Tahrir has prepared a party culture that includes a host of Islamic rules about life’s matters. The party calls for Islam in its quality as an intellectual leadership from which emanates the systems that deals with all man’s problems, political, economic, cultural and social among others. Hizb ut-Tahrir is a political party that admits to its membership men and women, and calls all people to Islam and to adopt its concepts and systems. It views people according to the viewpoint of Islam no matter how diverse their nationalities and their schools of thought were. Hizb ut-Tahrir adopts the interaction with the Ummah in order to reach its objective and it struggles against colonialism in all its forms and attributes in order to liberate the Ummah from its intellectual leadership and to deracinate its cultural, political, military and economic roots from the soil of the Islamic lands. Hizb ut-Tahrir endeavours to change the erroneous thoughts which colonialism has propagated, such as confining Islam to rituals and morals."

The man who bumped into a gunman behind siege in Lindt Cafe and was threatened with being shot
A SYDNEY man who came face-to-face with the hostage gunman says he threatened to "shoot him too". Craig Stoker was walking down Phillip Street after buying a coffee in the Lindt Cafe when he bumped into the gunman. "He was wearing a black T-shirt with white writing on it and a headband and carrying a blue bag.

"The bag bumped into me and there was something hard in it. I said 'watch where you are f***ing going'.
Yes, the dangers of f-bombing someone on the street...
"He turned round and said 'do you want me to shoot you too?.' I looked into his eyes and they were crazy," said Mr Stoker, a father of four from Eastlakes. "I was pretty freaked out."

The bearded man was with two others who were similarly dressed.

Hostages held up by armed gunman in Sydney cafe
This is a local Aussie news-station. See the comments from Burg regulars yesterday after news broke here.
An image has emerged of the man believed to have taken at least 13 people hostage inside a Sydney CBD cafe. The bearded man, wearing a black bandana around his head, has been filmed inside the Lindt cafe where hostages have been forced to stand against windows and hold a black Islamic flag.

At least 13 people are being held inside the Sydney CBD cafe by the man -- who is believed to have possible links to terrorist organisations.

The alarm was raised about 9.45am after onlookers reported a man with a shotgun taking hostages in the cafe. Hostages inside the cafe have been forced to hold what appears to be an Islamic flag, identified as a Shahada flag, in the cafe's window reading "no god worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is his messenger".

A man has been handcuffed 200m from the Martin Place cafe siege with a police officer's foot on what appears to be a small black handgun.

An ISIS flag is being held against the window.

Police have moved into position. There are more than three tactical police units on the scene, around 50 uniformed officers and scores more detectives in plain clothes and bulletproof vests.

Police are directing those in the vicinity of Martin Place who have not been evacuated to remain inside their buildings.

Journalist Chris Kenny, who was in the cafe about 20 minutes before the siege began, said he understood the automatic glass sliding doors had been disabled.

"I did speak to a couple of people who saw a bit more of this unfold than I did," he said. "One woman said she tried to go into the shop just after I came out with my takeaway coffee but the doors wouldn't open.

"So obviously whoever is doing this has disabled the automatic glass sliding doors to stop anyone else going in.

"She said immediately she could see there was a weapon.

"She mentioned (the weapon) being taken out of a blue bag and people were straight away asked to put up their hands."

Businesses that share the same building at the centre of the siege in Martin Place told ninemsn they are yet to be evacuated as they await police instruction.

It is understood that staff of a number of businesses in 53 Martin Place are remaining in their offices and have been in contact with police through their building management.

A barrister who worked in the floors above the café told 9NEWS when he heard the sirens he "thought nothing of it".

"I heard some witnesses say they went to go in (to the cafe) and saw a man with a sawn-off shotgun," he said.

He said the building has some fire exits where people could use to leave the building but he thought police could have sealed them off.

"I obviously can't remember anything this dramatic ever happening in Sydney," he said.

He walked downstairs just as the situation was unfolding, and was quickly ushered outside by police. He estimated at least 50 other barristers were stuck on the floors above the café.

Workers in nearby buildings, including the Seven Network, have been ordered to evacuate the area. Police have moved all media and bystanders back about 70 meters from the Lindt Cafe.

Heavily armed tactical response police are taking turns behind a blast shield on the corner of the building. The officers are moved into the critical position for a short period of time before being swapped with reserve police behind cover.

    Hostages Taken in Sydney Cafe
This is Bloomberg; I figure they're going to be a little behind the local news but might have some tidbits that are helpful.
A group of people are being held hostage in a cafe in Sydney's Martin Place and forced to hold a black flag with Arabic writing against a window.

Armed police cleared the square in the city's central business district, as Prime Minister Tony Abbott convened Cabinet's National Security Committee for briefings on the siege and the local dollar fell. Police said they were trying to make contact with people inside the Lindt cafe and urged people in the area to stay indoors and away from open windows.

"This is obviously a deeply concerning incident but all Australians should be reassured that our law enforcement and security agencies are well trained and equipped and are responding in a thorough and professional manner," Abbott said in a statement. "This looks like it's intended to get as much publicity as possible."

As many as 10 staff may be inside the Lindt cafe, which generally has about 30 customers during the mid-morning, Lindt Australia Chief Executive Officer Steve Loane said by telephone.

Pedestrians were blocked from the CBD square, which houses offices for Macquarie Group, the Reserve Bank of Australia and Westpac Banking Corp. The central bank said it's operating normally.

Channel Seven showed images of people inside the cafe with their arms up pressed against the window and holding a black flag with white lettering. New South Wales police said it was dealing with an armed incident and specialist officers were attempting to contact those within the cafe.

Sky News said the Sydney Opera House was evacuated after a suspicious package was found.

Martin Place train station has been closed and trains earlier suspended on the Eastern Suburbs line won't be stopping at the platform, Transport for New South Wales said on its website.

Iraq FM: China offered military help
On Sunday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-jaafari said, that his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, has offered military help to Iraq, including air support, according to the Financial Times.

Iraqi FM Ibrahim Jafari stated, that his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, has offered assistance to Iraq to defeat the ISIS group militants, though Beijing will not be involved in the US-led coalition.

"Mr Wang said, our policy does not allow us to get involved in the international coalition. I welcomed this initiative. I told him…we are ready to deal with the coalition and also co-operate with other countries outside this coalition," Jafari said.

According to the Financial Times, the conversation between the two ministers took place during the UN anti-terrorism meeting in New York last September when Beijing offered to help with air-support in the fight against ISIS.
For the record, the Chinese also made a statement of support "for the efforts of the Iraqi government and its security forces to impose security and restore control over a number of Iraqi cities," back in June of this year.

    Top NPA leader arrested
A high-ranking leader of the communist New People's Army (NPA) was arrested in a joint military-police operation in Barangay Magnaga, Pantukan, Compostela Valley Province late Sunday afternoon.

The rebel leader was identified as Jordan Donillo alias Noli or Estong. Lieutenant Vergel Lacambra said Donillo is a member of the NPA's Special Operations Group that was tasked to assassinate retired General Jovito Palparan in Manila in 2000.

At the time of his arrest, Donillo was the commander of the main wing of Guerilla Front 18 with P2.5 million reward for his arrest. Donillo has a series of warrants for attempted murder, robbery with multiple frustrated murder, and murder.
He sounds kinda murdery to me.
Lacambra recalled that Donillo was once apprehended by the police in 2002 but he was reportedly rescued by his comrades.

Lacambra said, "His notoriety can be traced back when he led his NPA unit in attacking San Isidro Municipal Police Station on August 22, 2007 and Davao Oriental Provincial Jail in Mati City on May 19, 2008. He also led the attack of Banay-banay Municipal Police Station on July 3, 2008 and the arson of Bachelor Bus in Banay-banay last CY 2009."

Lacambra added that Donillo had also led an attack on a military temporary patrol base of 28th Infantry Battalion in Sitio Chapter, Barangay Maputi, Banay-banay in May 2010.

[Ynet] Activists say that rebels and al-Qaeda gunnies have taken over at least three checkpoints around a pair of government military bases in northwestern Syria.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist collective both reported the heavy fighting Sunday around the Wadi Deif and Hamidiyeh bases outside the town of Maaret al-Numan in Syria's Idlib province.

Rebels have been trying to capture both facilities since 2012.

Syria Rebels Battle to Keep Key Aleppo Hill
[AnNahar] Twenty-one rebels and nine members of Syria's regime forces were killed north of Aleppo on Sunday in fierce fighting for control of a key myrmidon supply route, a monitor said.

The battle for Handarat hill comes as the United Nations
    ...the Oyster Bay money pit...
tries to broker a ceasefire deal between rebels and the regime in Syria's second city.
So long as it keeps them busy and out of the hair of those completely uninterested in anything remotely resembling a ceasefire...
."Nine regime fighters and 21 rebels have been killed and regime forces have made an advance at Handarat," said Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.

Handarat is just north of Aleppo, which has been divided since a rebel offensive in summer 2012 between loyalist sectors in the west of the city and myrmidon-held territory in the east.

Keeping control of the strategic hill is vital for the rebels as it overlooks their main supply line from Turkey.

"If regime forces seize control of the entire region, the rebel sector of Aleppo would be under total siege," Abdel Rahman said.

Syria's state news agency SANA, quoting a military source, said the army backed by pro-regime murderous Moslems had taken al-Maleh farms in Handarat's west and part of the southwest.

"A large number of faceless myrmidons were eliminated," SANA said of the rebels battling to overthrow the government of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

U.N. envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura in October announced a plan for a "freeze" in fighting in Aleppo.

On Saturday, his deputy Ramzi Ezzedine Ramzi arrived in Syria to push for a truce in the country's former commercial capital, spokeswoman Juliette Touma said.

At the start of the week, De Mistura held what Touma called "constructive" talks on Aleppo with rebel groups in Gaziantep in Turkey.

Elsewhere in Syria, loyalist forces on Sunday battled jihadists from al-Nusra

The fighting broke out after the jihadists assaulted an army post, killing 12 soldiers, it said. Eight attackers were also killed.
