Kenya charges five men over Garissa attack
[Al Ahram] Five men were charged on Thursday in connection with an attack by Somali Islamist gunnies on Garissa University in northeast Kenya that killed 148 students, the worst Death Eater attack in the east African nation in almost two decades.

The assault on Garissa University on April 2, in which gunnies from Somalia's al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
group stormed in and sought to kill Christian students, has piled pressure on President Uhuru Kenyatta to do more to secure the border and other regions.

The effects of the assault are still being felt in Garissa County, where almost two-thirds of schools have had to shut because students, many from other regions, are not willing to go to work there any more, regional officials said.

Four men from Kenya and one from Tanzania were charged in court for conspiring to commit "a terrorist act at Garissa University College" and other related offences, court documents showed.

They are the first people to face formal charges over the attack.

Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo told the Nairobi court that a hearing would be held on July 11 to rule on whether to grant bail to the men accused of involvement in the attack, the worst since al Qaeda bombed the U.S. embassy in Kenya in 1998.

Kenyatta has faced mounting criticism for not doing enough to halt a spate of attacks by al-Shabaab, which has vowed to keep up assaults until Nairobi pulls its troops out of Somalia where they are part of an African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
peacekeeping force.

Diplomats and security experts say the security services do not coordinate properly due to rivalries and the police often use heavy-handed tactics of mass arrests that undermine efforts to build intelligence on Death Eater cells.

As well as Garissa, there have been assaults in the border region, along the coast and in the capital, including the 2013 Westgate shopping mall attack in which 67 people were killed.

The region along the long Somali border, already a desperately poor area, has been particularly hard hit.

"There are about 96 schools which have closed in a span of a few weeks because of security fears," Harun Rashid Khator, Garissa County commissioner, told Rooters, saying that was out of a total of 150 primary and secondary schools in the county.

About 1,300 teachers work in the schools and many have refused to return to work, with primary schools the most affected. Khator said efforts to hire new teachers drew a poor response.

Garissa County Governor Nathif Jama said officials were appealing to the government to help. "This is going to affect the future economy and social life of this area badly if the national government doesn't treat it with urgency now," he said.

Egypt sentences 52 Islamists to up to 10 years
[ARABNEWS] An Egyptian court sentenced 52 supporters of ousted Islamist president Muhammad Mursi to up to 10 years in jail Thursday over a protest in January 2014, a judiciary official said.

The verdict is the latest in a series of harsh sentences handed down to Mursi supporters who have been targeted in a relentless crackdown since the army ousted him in July, 2013.

A criminal court at Sohag in the Upper Egyptian province of Sohag, 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of Cairo, passed a 10-year sentence to 43 defendants, 24 of whom were tried in absentia, the official said.

They were convicted of "illegal assembly, resisting authorities, rioting and using violence" during a protest denouncing a constitutional referendum in January last year, the official added.

The court also sentenced three defendants to five years each and six others to three years in jail. Three more were acquitted.

Since Mursi's ouster the crackdown on his supporters has left hundreds of people dead and thousands locked away

Libya almost ceasing to be a functioning state: Leon
[Libya Herald] In his hardest-hitting public speech to date, UNSMIL chief Bernardino Leon has warned that Libya has reached " a moment of truth". It was on the verge of ceasing to exist as a functioning state. He told politicians gathered in Algiers for a two-day meeting as part of the Dialogue, that while the two rivals continued to fight each other, the terror threat of IS was becoming ever more important.

With Ramadan approaching the choice had to be made between continued fighting and peace. "We are approaching the sacred month of Ramadan," he said, "a moment of peace, a moment of reconciliation, a moment for the families to get together and celebrate together and I think this is always said about all the countries in the world, and especially true in the case of Libya".

Leon spoke of the paradox that both the government and Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
were each fighting IS (Daesh). This showed very clearly, he said, "that those who have been accusing Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) of being a terrorist organization now see how some of the most important militias in Fajr Libya are fighting Daesh ... It means that we all have to agree that Fajr Libya is not a terrorist organization but an organization that can share values with many of the people in the other camp and can join these efforts to preserve the Libyan unity, the Libyan illusory sovereignty and to fight those like Daesh who aim at destroying the Libyan state".

Leon continued: "But at the same time, it is important for Fajr Libya also to understand that if they can have this common enemy that aims at destroying democracy, at destroying this modern state that all Libyans want to build, it means that this narrative that says that those in Tobruk and in other regions are people from the previous regime who are against democracy is also wrong.

"It means that these shared values of building a modern and democratic state are not a monopoly of Fajr Libya and other organizations but can be shared by all those present in both camps".

Leon said that Libya now really was at the limit. As soon as six weeks, the Central Bank of Libya would very probably be unable to pay salaries. Libyan administration in both Beida and Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
would be faced with collapse.

Oil production had dropped, he said, but even if it recovered to 2011 levels, it would not be able to sustain the budget deficit that Libya needs to maintain its public finances.

Acting on a tip-off, authorities stormed a hideout where the migrants were waiting for people smugglers to take them to boats, migration officials said.

-based government that is not recognized internationally, said 545 migrants were rounded up.

"They are from Africa, and most of them are men. They were taken to a detention center in the capital," said Mohammed Baker, another migration unit official.

The arrests are the latest announced by officials in Tripoli, where an anti-government militia alliance last year set up a rival administration to the elected government now based in the east.

In May alone, authorities in Tripoli said they arrested more than 1,000 migrants who had hoped to set sail for Europe.

In mid-May, the authorities said they had launched an operation targeting people smugglers who have plied their trade in Libya for decades.

Arabia
Terrorism 'unites young Saudis on social media'
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Recent terrorist acts in the Eastern Province have led Saudi youth to drastically increase their social media participation, according to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance.

The ministry's head of the Sakina Campaign, which aims to gauge public opinion on Daesh (the so-called IS), told Al-Hayat that the attacks on mosques in Al-Qudaih and Dammam increased traffic on the initiative's social media sites.

Abdulmonem Al-Mushawah said: "The visitors of our social media sites have increased by 180 percent.

"Social media has enabled the youth to become more involved in world issues and more critical in their opinions.

"Regardless of religious sect, people are uniting to oppose Daesh and its terrorist acts."

He said fighting terrorism is no longer just an official duty but the patriotic task of every citizen.

"A lot of young people argue and debate directly with the gunnies on their social media accounts. The young generation is bold and has defied Daesh's agenda on multiple levels," Al-Mushawah said.

"They are uniting together from various parts of the Kingdom and from Sunni and Shiite backgrounds to honor the deaders of the two incidents and defend the national security."

Security affairs researcher Ahmad Al-Mowkli said the technology and information revolution has drastically changed the dynamics of communication and awareness in society.

He said: "In the past, the only people able to speak about a certain topic were its experts. "Nowadays, however, anyone can voice their opinions about anything.

Communication is fast and people are able to reach out to millions of people."

He added raising awareness have become easier than ever because people do not only share their thoughts with like-minded people but are also exposed to opposing views.

"An example of the positive effects of the technology and information revolution is the way the general public and the youth are dealing with terrorism.

"In the past, terrorism was this hazy dark cloud that everyone feared. Nowadays, terrorism is a topic open for debate and intellectual discussion."

#3  They would probably get lots of Aid to help in the transition as Japan and others hope to buy the good will (and the US tries to buy up any nuclear weapons).

The NOrth Korean army should probably be kept. They can be slowly drawn down/improved over time but having that many unemployed during a transition would just make things worse. They can be lined up on the Chinese border and re-trained into a big Corp of Engineers type deal or something.

N.Korea Shows Footage of Submarine-Launched Missile
What's new is the footage, not the news.
North Korea on Thursday published footage of what it claimed was the successful launch of a submarine-based ballistic missile.

The two-minute clip posted on the propaganda website Uriminzokkiri shows a projectile that appears to be a ballistic missile being launched from a black submerged vessel as North Korean leader Fat Boy Kim Jong-un watches through binoculars.

The corpulent Kim is then heard to hail the launch as a major accomplishment.

The clip says the successful launch will enable Pyongyang to conduct underwater missions "as it wishes" and to strike its enemies "from the sea."

A Unification Ministry official said, "North Korea's intent in unveiling the footage appears aimed at showing off its military might and threatening the Seoul-Washington alliance."
The only person who'd fall for this nonsense is John Kerry. Oh wait...

Real GDP growth: Pakistan still lagging behind in S Asia
[DAWN] For FY14-15 ending in June, Pakistan’s GDP grew 4.2pc which confirms two consecutive years of increased growth after a couple of years of stagnancy.

The difference between budgeted and achieved real GDP growth was much greater than it has been in previous years, displaying a need for the government to set realistic and achievable targets for economic performance.

Israel, Saudi Arabia admit secret diplomacy for first time
Israel and Saudi Arabia have held five secret meetings since the beginning of 2014 to discuss the common threat Iran posses to the region, it was revealed for the first time Thursday at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, according to Bloomberg.

Although the two are considered to be historic enemies, with Saudi Arabia refusing to recognize the Jewish State's right to exist, they never-the-less have engaged in a campaign of clandestine diplomacy in an effort to thwart the Islamic Republic's growing influence in the Middle East.

South Carolina becomes first US state to take action against anti-Israel boycotts
South Carolina's governor has signed into law a bill to stop efforts to boycott, divest and sanction Israel on Thursday afternoon, in a first for the nation on a statewide level.
Illinois isn't far behind...
The bill makes no mention of Israel directly, but prevents public entities from contracting with businesses engaging in the "boycott of a person or an entity based in or doing business with a jurisdiction with whom South Carolina can enjoy open trade."

The premise of the law is that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, colloquially known as BDS, discriminates against the people of Israel and weakens the economy of South Carolina
Anti-Semites are idealistic people, who often lose sight of practicalities.

Champ: 'Netanyahu '€˜predisposed' to think peace is naive.'
[Right Stuff] Obama gave an interview to an Israeli reporter the other night and as you might expect, he criticized Netanyahu and insisted his deal with Iran is the best thing since sliced bread, despite the fact that he got this earful from the reporter:

"Mr. President, there is a remarkably sincere observation you made once. You said 'nothing comes to my desk that is perfectly solvable,'" reporter Ilana Dayan said in an interview with the president that aired on Israeli television Tuesday evening.

"And you said 'any given decision I make, I'll wind up with a 30-40 percent chance that it isn't going to work,'" she continued. "I'm afraid Israelis cannot afford even a three to four percent chance that you are wrong Mr. President, because if you are, the bomb will hit Tel Aviv first."

This part came toward the end of the interview. The first part was on his assessment of Netanyahu, who he said was predisposed to think peace is naĂŻve, suggesting that Netanyahu's stipulations for peace are just unworkable or something.

Top Syrian official visits Homs after army setbacks
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syria's defense minister has visited army units to the east of Homs city, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported on Thursday, in what appeared to be the latest in a series of morale-boosting trips by bigwigs to military outposts.

The government has lost large areas of land in the last two months to holy warriors including the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and the Islamic State

group that last month seized the ancient city of Palmyra in Homs province.

General Fahad Jassim al-Freij, who is armed forces deputy commander as well as defense minister, told the troops in the eastern Homs countryside he was confident in their ability to defend Syria from what he called "terrorism and its supporters".

Homs lies 150 km (90 miles) to the west of the Palmyra, also known as Tadmur. The Syrian army and militia fighting alongside it have also lost swathes of territory in the northwestern province of Idlib to an alliance of holy warriors including the Nusra Front.

State media reports did not give the exact location of Freij's visit. A video showed vehicles driving on a dusty road through a desert landscape and Freij addressing troops outside.

It is at least the second high-level visit to Homs since the fall of Palmyra. Prime Minister Wael al-Halaki has also been, visiting a gas plant that is a major source of fuel for government-held areas.

Terror Networks
US officials warn of encrypted communications by extremists
More on this from yesterday.
[RUDAW.NET] US law enforcement officials expressed concern

, saying the technology was complicating efforts to monitor terror suspects and Death Eaters.

The officials, appearing before the House Homeland Security Committee, said that even as thousands of Islamic State supporters around the world communicate in public view on Twitter, some are exploiting social media platforms that allow them to shield their messages from law enforcement.

"There are 200-plus social media companies. Some of these companies build their business model around end-to-end encryption," said Michael Steinbach, head of the FBI's counterterrorism division. "There is no ability currently for us to see that" communication, he said.

Asked later in the hearing if he thought the technology companies were being unhelpful, Steinbach replied, "The companies have built a product that doesn't allow them to help."

He said he was concerned that evolving technologies were outpacing laws that allow law enforcement to intercept communications by suspects.

John Mulligan, the deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center, testified that one of the two men involved in an attempted terror attack in Garland, Texas, last month urged fellow Islamic State supporters before the shooting to move their communications to private Twitter messages. Those men, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, were shot by police outside a provocative Prophet Mohammed cartoon contest. No one else was killed.

Nusra Front leader fails expectations, hopes

DABIQ: ISIS Could Transport Nuke from Nigeria into U.S. through Mexico
[Breitbart] The Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL), in the latest edition of its propaganda magazine, indicated that it could purchase a nuclear weapon in Pakistan, take it to Nigeria, and then smuggle it into the U.S. through Mexico by using existing trafficking networks in Latin America.

In an op-ed article published in the ninth edition of ISIS' Dabiq magazine released in late May, the jihadist group claims it could transport a nuclear device in the same way illicit drugs are smuggled into Europe through West Africa, adding that Boko Haram's presence in Nigeria could facilitate the transaction.

The Nigeria-based Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram, pledged allegiance to ISIS in March.

In March, Gen. John Kelly, commander of U.S. Southern Command (Southcom), warned that Islamic terrorist groups such as ISIS could exploit the capabilities and knowledge of Latin American smuggling networks to infiltrate the U.S. through Mexico and possibly bring in weapons of mass destruction.

#1  General Kelly, could? or will? We need a little more clarity on that.

#2  So IOW, the ISIS/ISIL is overtly threatening DOMESTIC NUCLEAR TERROR [Nuke-WMD/CBRN(E)?] agz the US.

* See also RELATED WORLD NEWS > [WND.com] ISIS SCHEMES TO SNEAK NUKES INTO THE US.

Iff History is any measure, prob safe to say that any such event(s) agz CONUS by the ISIS/ISIL Hard Boyz is highly likely to take place while US attention is seriously diverted elsewhere, E.G. SOUTH CHINA SEA.

* BIGNEWSNETWORK > [VOA News] WILL SOUTH CHINA DISPUTE LEAD TO WORLD WAR?

At least for the time being, the Bammer + aligned Anti-US OWG Globalists desire for Russia, China + Iran, Other? to rise to Co-Superpower, MilPol/Geopol "parity" wid the future Ex-Sole Superpower-soon-to-be-Co-Superpower US.

"PARITY, N-O-T INFERIORITY" TO THE USA = infers that the destruction of the OWG Mighty USSA = OWG Weak Global USRoAmerika is NOT desired or intended for now.

LIMITED WAR, as we are already seeing in the ME.

Unlike Iran in the ME, CHINA has already long-possessed ICBMS capable of striking CONUS, hence a US-CHINA LIMITED TACTICAL NUKE WAR or even LIMITED STRATEGIC NUCLEAR WAR WORST-CASE SCENARIO(S) in East Asia andor IOR,South Asia cannot be ruled out.

Once SHTF, US-N-Only-US "Retreat/Pullback is World Peace" [+ OWG-NWO], Anti-US US Globalist POTUS Obama's abject priority will be to avoid any sort of Major or NucWar, espec agz China + even Russia. IFF CORRECT, THE QUESTION BECOMES HOW MANY GEOPOL CONCESSIONS WILL OBAMA MAKE TO AVOID WAR, + WHAT TYPE OR KIND OF CONCESSIONS???

The Amerikan people will be happily told the Bammer kept the US "out of war", etc. - what they will NOT be told is that it was planned many years + decades before.

IFF THERE IS NO "STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS" IN THE US FOR FELONY MURDER, IS THERE ALSO FOR HIGH TREASON???

#3  I think it is time, past time actually, to announce to the world and all the pissant little trolls that we will take them at their word and react accordingly.

If you say you're going to nuke us, then fine say that and you will cease to exist as an organization, culture, state as appropriate. No muss, no fuss. threats are treated as deeds...rinse and repeat as necessary.

#5  (a) First they've have to get a nuke.
(b) If they got one, they'll use it on Iran, not USA.

#6  ...A friend of mine has worked for many years as a strategic analyst, and he was asked a few years ago about this threat. His answer - very carefully phrased - was, "One should consider that there are very good reasons why it hasn't already happened."

Not something to be blown off - but nowhere near as simple as it sounds...or as simple as some people think.

#7  I still wonder at times that a ISIL/AlQ nuke detonation, or Iran nuking Tel Aviv/Riyadh, or NoKor dropping one on SoKor/Nippon, or any 'dirty' bomb going off here domestically wouldn't be the trigger for O® and/or his minions to suspend the constitution (more than they have already) and declare that 'No Change' is needed in 2016 'for the good of the people'.

It's like our administration is just trying to make this scenario (or something similar) happen.

Jeez, I'm getting pessimistic in my old age.

No, you're just 'white boarding' possible motives and outcomes. It's called 'predictive analysis' and it is one of the lost arts of the intelligence community. Far too much time spent on reporting, not enuf spent on analysis, thinking, postulating, war-gaming, etc.

Of course if outcomes are already decided, and no one up the chain-of-command wants your assessment, PPT production is a excellent method of occupying one's time and not bothering others.

#10  Yeah, my engineering and construction schooling kind of drilled 'predictive analysis' into us.

I don't know if it's taught anymore as it might be 'imbalanced' toward some protected class of society or fattening or something.

#13  You don't have to smuggle a nuke INTO the US to cause massive damage and economic injury to the US.

A sufficiently large nuke, 1 meg or so, detonated just inside the 3-mile limit, slightly outside the line the Coast Guard uses to start screening vessels, near LA, San Fran (I might cheer for a moment or so on that one), NY, Miami, or New Orleans, would cause enormous physical damage as well as require the mass evacuation of large numbers of people and render a large metropolitan area uninhabitable.

I firmly believe that any nuke possessed by Iran, ISIS, Hamas, etc., would be used on the US not on a neighbor. Those guys are nuts not stupid and they understand fallout plumes...with Mekkah and Medinha in the path of the result of a nuke attack on Israel.

Food Stamp EBT Cash Wired to Yemen
If you must link to a blog like Right Wing News, please place it in Opinion, not as WoT news, s'il vous plait.

A couple of steaks shoplifted at a Gardendale Walmart three months ago led to the biggest food stamp fraud investigation in Jefferson County's history, and launched 11 simultaneous raids this morning at convenience stores countywide.

Led by the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, teams of law enforcement officers met at 5 a.m. for a briefing and then fanned out across the county beginning at 6:50 a.m. The officers and agents were armed with 242 arrest warrants and plans to arrest 17 suspects.

All 17 suspects were in custody by mid-morning, and investigators already today have filed for forfeiture and condemnation of those 11 stores, which totals more than $1 million in assets.

"This is huge for us,'' said Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls.

The massive probe, dubbed Operation T-bone, targeted those they say have been cheating the food stamp system to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars and sending at least some of the profits via wire transfer to Yemen.
