Sudanese citizen tried to kill Israeli on int'l flight
Ethiopian authorities arrested a Sudanese traveler after he tried to murder an Israeli passenger on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Chad to Ethiopia last Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affaris told Ynet on Tuesday.

"We are aware of the event and the Israeli embassy in Addis Ababa has updated us with details," said ministry representatives.

Arik, 54, works in an Israeli communications company that operates in Africa. He had intended to travel on to Israel after landing in Addis Ababa.

"About 20 minutes before the plane started its descent the passenger sitting behind me identified me as Israeli and Jewish," Arik told Ynet.

"He came up behind my seat and started to choke me with a lot of force," he continued, "and at first I couldn't get my voice out and call for help.

"He hit me over the head with a metal tray and shouted 'Allah akbar' and 'I will slaughter the Jew.' Only after a few seconds, just before I was about to lose consciousness, did I manage to call out and a flight attendant who saw what was happening summoned her colleagues," Arik added.

According to Arik, most of the passengers on the half-empty flight refrained from getting involved. "After they pulled him off me he hit me and shouted in Arabic. Some of the flight staff took me to the rear section of the plane and two guarded the attacked during the last part of the flight."

A Lebanese passenger was one of the few who came to Arik's rescue. Arik says that after they had already overpowered his attacker, the Sudanese citizen tried to convince the other passengers to lynch him.

"After we landed the Lebanese guy told me that I'd been saved twice, because after they'd overpowered my attacker he said to everyone: 'Let's finish him off.'

"During the moments when I thought I was going to die, I'd already begun to separate from my family in my thoughts."

In a statement released in response to the incident, Ethiopian Airlines said: "The attacker, who has been identified as Ahmed Mohamed, showed no signs of violence as he was boarding the flight.

"He attacked not only the Israeli but also other passengers and members of the flight crew. He is still in detention and is due to appear in court on Wednesday.

"The Israeli passenger was taken to a medical clinic in the airport and released shortly after. He was able to continue on to Tel Aviv as planned. We are sorry for the incident and will do everything we can in order to prevent further such attacks on our Israeli customers."

Puntland soldier kills three colleagues in Galgala shooting
GALGALA, Somalia -- A shooting by Puntland government soldier has left three others dead on the frontline in restive Galgala on Monday, Garowe Online reports. Security officials say, investigations are underway after the soldier opened fire and instantly killed three troops for unknown reasons.

The attacker himself has been gunned down on the same scene for fear of further casualties.

Africa North
Death toll in North Sinai car bomb explosion rises to 6 conscripts
[AlAhram] The Islamist myrmidon group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis claims responsibility for the deadly attack in Arish

The number of fatalities in North Sinai's Al-Arish boom-mobile kaboom has risen to six as of Wednesday afternoon, Rooters' Aswat Masriya reported.

North Sinai General-Prosecutor Emad Dahshan told Aswat Masriya that six people were killed and 10 others were maimed.

"Three dead bodies of police personnel were found along with the remains of one police personnel, one civilian and the jacket wallah," Dahshan told Aswat Masriya.

The Islamist myrmidon group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis (ABM) grabbed credit for the kaboom in a statement on a Twitter account affiliated to the myrmidon group, declaring one of its members, "Abu-Aisha Al-Masry," as the suicide bomber.

According to preliminary reports from Al-Arish, four police personnel were killed, while five conscripts and five civilians were maimed in the kaboom that took place next to the Police club.

This is considered the biggest attack against security personnel in North Sinai after the announcement on Sunday by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi that security forces were achieving huge success in purging the area of terrorist organizations.

Last Thursday, six security personnel, also in El-Arish, were maimed in an kaboom which targeted an armored security vehicle.

ABM has grabbed credit for most of the attacks against Egyptian army and police personnel in North Sinai as well as several terrorist attacks outside Sinai since the ouster of president Mohammed Morsi in 2013, leaving hundreds of soldiers and officers dead.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results...
the Egyptian army has been conducting a wide offensive, dubbed Operation Martyrs' Right, to squash the insurgency. The army declared the first stage of the operation as successful.

Egyptian flooding drowns Gaza's tunnel business
A campaign being conducted by the Egyptian army seeks to flood every tunnel crossing into the country from Gaza, much to the seething ire of Palestinians.

Mahmoud Bakeer speaks with despair about the night of the flash flood, when he screamed at his wife and five children to flee their home on Gaza's border with Egypt as the water rushed in.
That's what you get when you allow a tunnel to be built underneath your home.
They made it to safety during the flooding last week, but a network of Palestinian tunnels running under the frontier town of Rafah is now water-logged, destroyed by Cairo to sever what it says is a weapons smuggling route out of Gaza for Islamist insurgents in Egypt's Sinai desert.

UK hints Russia plane brought down by bomb
Follow-on from yesterday's late report. At some point we'll get a more complete report from a news agency.
Britain said on Wednesday it was concerned the Russian airliner that crashed last Saturday in Sinai may have been brought down by a bomb, prompting it to temporarily suspend flights from Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh.

"While the investigation is still ongoing we cannot say categorically why the Russian jet crashed. But as more information has come to light, we have become concerned that the plane may well have been brought down by an explosive device," the office of Prime Minister David Cameron said.
Pending receipt of forensic data, played back the pre-event Special Intelligence collection and bounced that against post-event. Just a guess.
An Egyptian source close to the black box investigation also said "the cause of the crash looks more like an explosion but it not clear whether it was linked to fuel or a bomb".
I believe the Brits were the first to announce. Of course they still maintain a constructive intelligence sharing protocol with Egypt and Israel, which might have been helpful.

Yemeni resistance repels Houthi attack near Bab Al Mandab
Published Thursday, November 05, 2015
Yemen’s national resistance fighters repulsed two offensives by the Iranian-backed Houthis and their allies to retake positions overlooking the strategic Bab Al Mandab waterway, a Yemeni news network reported on Thursday.

Heavy fighting erupted when the coup insurgent attacked Dhubab close to Bab Al Mandab on Wednesday, Masdar Online said, quoting military sources.

“The Houthis and their allies launched two offensives targeting positions they had lost to the resistance…they tried to seize a strategic position overlooking Bab Al Mandab but they were repulsed by the resistance,” the report said.

It quoted other sources as saying five Houthis were killed and 13 injured in an attack by the resistance on rebel positions in Makbana area in Taiz.

It added that the insurgents faced fierce resistance as they tried to control a road to cut off weapons supply to the resistance in that area.

“Clashes were still raging late Wednesday as the resistance fighters were trying to halt the rebels’ advance in mountainous areas…at the same time, the Houthis and their allies were seen on Wednesday massing troops and weapons to seize roads in that area to cut off weapons supply to the resistance in Taiz city,” the report said.

Millions Sent from Australia to Fund Terror Groups
[AnNahar] Australia said Wednesday it was striving to shut down money flows to terrorist groups after its anti-money laundering agency tracked Aus$53 million (US$38 million) in suspect transactions in a year.

Government body AUSTRAC said that between July 2014 and June 2015, it monitored more than 100 people "of interest" and investigated 536 suspicious transactions valued at Aus$53 million, most of which were associated with murderous Moslem groups in Iraq and Syria.

"Those 100 are obviously part of a wider group of people who we're worried about supporting ISIL," Justice Minister Michael Keenan told news hounds in Canberra, using an acronym for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group. "Because it's not just money we are concerned about, but other Australians who might be involved such as (in) recruitment."

Australia has been increasingly worried about its nationals travelling to war zones in the Middle East to join murderous Moslem groups. The government estimates some 120 Australians are in Iraq and Syria supporting the Islamic State and other terror-linked groups, with another 160 actively supporting myrmidon organizations at home through financing and recruitment.

Canberra has also been concerned about attacks by home-grown myrmidons. It has raised its terror threat level to high, introduced new national security laws and conducted several counter-terrorism raids. It plans to tighten laws further to restrict the movements of suspects as young as 14 after a 15-year-old boy rubbed out a police employee in early October.

AUSTRAC cautioned that not all the Aus$53 million in transactions would be directly funding terrorism, since some funds were mixed in with legitimate financing. But it drew a link between the amount of money and people going overseas, adding that some Aus$11 million of the transactions were in cash.

"Currently, the volume of terrorism financing in Australia is linked to the number of Australians travelling to join terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq," AUSTRAC said in its annual report presented to parliament Tuesday. "Australians travelling to fight in the region may fund their own activities or receive financial support from Australian sympathizers."

Bulgaria to Extradite French Teen on 'Terror' Charges
[AnNahar] A Bulgarian court on Wednesday approved the extradition of a French 17-year-old wanted in his home country on "terrorism" charges, prosecutors said.

"The court approved the extradition of the French man who also gave his consent," prosecution front man Pavel Zhekov told AFP after a hearing in the southern town of Haskovo.

The youth -- identified as Sohaib Andrejak -- was detained while trying to cross Bulgaria's southeastern Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint into The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

It later became clear that a French court had issued a European warrant for his arrest on grounds of "participation in a criminal conspiracy for committing acts of terrorism," the prosecutor said.

Bulgaria is a major crossing point for Europeans heading to join Islamic State jihadists in Syria and Iraq and has so far intercepted and extradited several foreigners back to their home countries.

Spanish Police Arrest more Jihadist Suspects
[AnNahar] Spanish authorities said Wednesday they had detained two men suspected of being involved in the Islamic State

group's "recruitment and indoctrination" drive, a day after they broke up a "terror cell" in Madrid.

The two men were detained in a morning raid in the city of Cornella de Llobregat just outside Barcelona suspected of "maintaining contact with people in conflict zones, offering their support and encouraging them to continue their activities," the interior ministry said in a statement.

"They also allegedly actively and directly participated in Daesh [Islamic State] (IS)'s propaganda machine, by organising private meetings to watch propaganda content produced by the terrorist organization," it added.

The ministry said the two men -- a Moroccan national and a Spanish citizen -- aimed to persuade those who watched the videos or photos to join IS and go to conflict zones.

The arrests come just a day after authorities held three men who allegedly aimed to carry out an attack in the Spanish capital.

Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz told Cadena Ser radio that the suspects "were ready to conduct indiscriminate attacks", including knife attacks like those recently conducted by Paleostinian murderous Moslems in Israel or deadly assaults with rifles.

New details of ISIL raid in Diyarbakır emerge as police arrest 9 ISIL suspects in Gaziantep
[Hurriyet] New details have emerged regarding Oct. 26 raids on cell houses belonging to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Diyarbakir, with officials revealing that the jihadist group planned to attack political party and newspaper offices in the country.

The revelations come amid the arrest of nine suspects for their alleged ties to ISIL in Gaziantep, which is southeast The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
like Diyarbakir.

Two coppers and seven ISIL forces of Evil were killed during a police raid on a cell house in Diyarbakir's Kayapinar district on Oct. 26.

During a subsequent search, police seized the outlines of three political parties' provincial and district buildings in Diyarbakir, while also confiscating the drawings of other addresses.

The ISIL members were thought to be preparing for attacks on the buildings.

Police said the members were staying at a cell house on 47th Street in Kayapinar, while they were planning attacks at a house on 53rd Street. Female ISIL members sometimes stood guard at the houses to avoid attracting any attention.

Nine ISIL suspects locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, the radioactive tadpoles grown into frogs. Really big frogs, in fact...
nine ISIL suspects, two of whom were tossed into the calaboose after throwing a hand grenade at a police car, were arrested in Gaziantep on Nov. 4.

The Gaziantep Governor's Office also said in a statement that the nine suspects were allegedly planning an attack on a political party's Istanbul headquarters before the Nov. 1 elections.

Two of the arrestees had previously thrown a hand grenade at a police vehicle after stepping out of their car, which was following them on Oct. 30, two days before the Nov. 1 parliamentary elections.

Upon a tip that a kaboom was going to take place, units from the Gaziantep anti-terror police branch closely monitored a vehicle with the two suspects inside. When the suspects realized they were being followed, they stopped the car, exited and threw a hand grenade at the police car, only for the explosive to fail to detonate. The suspects expeditiously departed at a goodly pace on foot but were caught after a chase.

The address of daily Cumhuriyet's Ankara bureau was found on one of the suspects. Two suicide kaboom vests, explosives and a hand grenade were also found inside the vehicle.

Following the two suspects' testimonies, police raided seven addresses in the province and detained seven suspects who were alleged to be linked to ISIL. In the raids, around nine grams of kaboom, four hand grenades, four guns, two shotguns, 135 crackers, three vehicles, around 10,000 Turkish Liras and 10,000 U.S. dollars, laptops, hard disks and cell phones were seized.

The governor's office said the two suspects had received orders from senior ISIL figures in Syria and were preparing to take a car they had obtained in Gaziantep to Istanbul in order to launch a suicide bomb and firearm attack on a political party's Istanbul branch.

It added that "an address belonging to the Ankara bureau of a nationwide newspaper and notes about the same newspaper's office in Istanbul's Sisli district were also found during the search."

Daily Cumhuriyet's Istanbul office is located in the Sisli district.

Clashes with Kurdish militants kill 18 in southeast Turkey
[AlAhram] Eighteen people were killed in festivities in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's mainly Kurdish southeast region on Wednesday, a day after the military launched air strikes there, and authorities announced a curfew in two provincial districts.

The violence came days after a parliamentary election won by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) of President Tayyip Erdogan, who on Wednesday pledged to continue operations against the PKK until every last Death Eater is "liquidated".

The office of the governor of Diyarbakir declared a curfew in 22 villages in two provincial districts, Hani and Lice, saying there would be an operation against the PKK gunnies there. The curfew was due to start at 5 p.m. (1400GMT).

Two soldiers and 15 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) gunnies were killed fighting near the village of Daglica by the Iraqi border, which the military had targeted with air strikes the day before, the General Staff said on its website.

Turkish jets also pounded PKK targets in northern Iraq on Tuesday for a second day, the military also said.

The AK Party won back a parliamentary majority on Sunday in a major victory for Erdogan. Speaking in Ankara, Erdogan used his first major speech since the vote to say operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) would continue until its gunnies buried their arms.

A two-year ceasefire he had championed with the gunnies collapsed in July.

A 20-year-old man was rubbed out in the town of Silvan, where authorities ordered a round-the-clock curfew in three neighbourhoods for a second successive day, security officials said. Clashes between security forces and the PKK's urban youth wing continued throughout the day in Silvan.

On Tuesday, one man was killed in Silvan and two others in Yuksekova.

The autonomy-seeking PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union

, took up arms in 1984. More than 40,000 people, mainly Kurdish holy warriors, have died in the prolonged conflict.

Over the years, Erdogan has granted some political and cultural rights to Turkey's estimated 15 million Kurds. But the government abandoned efforts for a negotiated settlement to the insurgency this year ahead of a June vote when the AKP lost its parliamentary majority.

Some 15 members of the YDG-H, who were allegedly responsible for robbery and Molotov attacks in the neighborhoods on various dates, were detained in the operation.

In addition, two pump-rifles and guns were also seized during the police search.

Former Gitmo inmate detained in Toronto
Expect a lot more of this now that Kanadian Kommies are running the show...
[Reuters] Mourad Benchellali, a French national and former Guantanamo Bay inmate, was detained by Canadian police at a Toronto airport on Monday on his way to a conference, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

Benchellali, who is now an anti-extremism activist, was set to attend a conference in Canada on preventing radicalization in prisons, but local authorities still consider him a “threat to national security,” Radio-Canada reported. His lawyer confirmed the Radio-Canada report, but did not comment further.

A Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) spokesman could not immediately confirm the detention, but the filmmaker who had invited Benchellali to Canada to be part of a documentary she is producing said he was now detained in a maximum security prison.

Toronto-based filmmaker Eileen Thalenberg said by phone on Wednesday that she invited Benchellali to be part of a documentary she is producing for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp because of his prevention work with youth.

Thalenberg said she checked with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and received assurances before bringing Benchellali from France to Iceland and then to Canada, so he would not fly over American airspace.

“I would have never brought him otherwise,” she told Reuters.

The RCMP declined to comment, referring queries to the CBSA, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Thalenberg said Benchellali sent her a text message from prison on Wednesday saying: “I never thought I’d be in an orange jumpsuit again.”

Originally from a suburb of Lyon, Benchellali was arrested at an Al Qaida training camp in Afghanistan and taken into custody by the U.S. army. He was an inmate at Guantanamo from January 2002 to July 2004.

For the past two years he has been involved in an initiative to stop young people from joining terror groups in Syria, according to his supporters.

Benchellali was previously stopped from boarding a flight to Canada in June because he is still on the U.S. government’s no-fly list and the plane would have passed through U.S. airspace.

Iraq
ISIS Bad Guys destroy Shiite Kurds homes in Ninevah
[ARA News] URFA – Militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) blew up Wednesday a number of houses belonging to displaced Kurdish families in a Shiite village east of Mosul city in northern Iraq, local sources reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Mosul, M.Z. said that ISIS gunmen blew up Wednesday a number of houses belonging to the “Shabak Kurds” (Shiite Kurdish group) in the village Bazwaya east of Mosul.

“At least 13 houses have been bombed by the hardline group,” the source said under the condition of anonymity.

Hundreds of Shiite Kurdish families, known as Shabak Kurds who speak al-Bajlaniya dialect, used to reside some 60 villages in the plain of Nineveh in northern Iraq, before ISIS extremists stormed the province last year.

ISIS extremists have shown hostility towards other different religious groups, including Christians and Jews, describing them as “infidels and crusaders” who deserve death. The group even considers people belonging to other Islamic sects as “apostates”.

Religious Minorities Under ISIS Attacks

In April, the terror group blew up the church of the Virgin Mary in the Assyrian village of Tel Nasri near the town of Tel Temir (50 km west of Hasakah) in northeastern Syria.

The bombing of the church coincided with the first day of the Assyrian Christian’s Easter holiday.

In March, ISIS extremists bombed the renowned Yezidi ancient minaret of the Shingal district (120 km west of the city of Mosul), in northern Iraq.

The group had earlier blew up the Shiite shrine of Sayeda Zeinab in al-Madina in August 2014. The Shingal’s minaret and Sayeda Zeinab shrine are the most prominent monuments in Shingal area.

Tortured by Islamic State, rescued before execution: freed hostages recount ordeal
[Rooters] ERBIL - The last thing that came to Saad Khalaf Ali's mind as his Islamic State interrogators smothered him with a plastic bag was his two wives and children. Then everything went dark.

He was jolted back to his senses by an electric current coursing through his body, and came round soaked in water and gasping for breath on the floor of a prison in northern Iraq.

The former policeman is one of many Iraqis to have suffered at the hands of Islamic State, which tortures, executes or beheads anyone deemed immoral or an opponent of its ideology and its goal of creating a caliphate across the Muslim world.

Saad withstood the punishment but succumbed to psychological pressure when the militants threatened to slaughter his entire family.

He confessed to informing Kurdish and Iraqi forces about Islamic State positions, an action frequently punishable by beheading or shooting at point blank range.

"I confessed to everything," said the 32-year old former policeman from the Hawija area.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian charged with diverting Gaza rehabilitation materials to Hamas terrorists
[Jpost] Suspect circumvented UN inspectors responsible for ensuring that such materials, provided by donor nations and other bodies, are used solely for rehabilitating civilian infrastructure, Shin Bet says.

A Gazook has been indicted for diverting building materials meant for reconstruction in the Strip directly to Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,'s armed wing, the Shin Bet said on Wednesday.

The suspect, named by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) as 36-year-old Tamer Ahmed Muhammad Barim of Bani Suheila, was tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
trying to enter Israel at the Erez crossing on the northern Gazoo border on August 31. His arrest remained under a gag order until Wednesday.

A Shin Bet front man said the agency did not clear the arrest for publication until Wednesday because there were additional "investigative steps" necessary for the case that required it be kept confidential.

The case was reported more than a month after Barim was indicted in the Beersheba District Court on security charges including assisting a terrorist organization.

The front man added that Barim "knew why he was being arrested" and that the investigation was in process for some time before the arrest. The Shin Bet would not reveal how many times Barim made these shipments to the Gazoo Strip or if he has any suspected accomplices in Israel.

The Shin Bet said that Barim managed to circumvent UN inspectors who supervise imports to the Strip, allowing him to divert hundreds of tons of building materials provided by foreign donors for the rehabilitation of civilian infrastructure damaged during Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014.

On Wednesday, the Shin Bet said the case -- which was investigated in collaboration with the Southern District of the Israel Police -- represents "further testimony of how Hamas exploits donor funds meant for the rehabilitation and development of the civilian infrastructure in the Strip for the purposes of terrorism."

Mutiny within Iran’s Revolutionary Guard after it incurs heavy losses in Syria
Mullahs playing hardball
Tehran and London, Asharq Al-Awsat—A rising death toll within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria is leading to a mutiny among some senior commanders, who have refused to obey orders to fight in the war-torn country, according to a source close to the Revolutionary Guard.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Asharq Al-Awsat the commanders, who are also joined by a number of junior officers, have now been referred to a court-marshal on charges of “mutiny and treason.”

Iran, which alongside Russia is Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s main international ally, has denied it has combat troops in Syria, claiming it has only sent officers and generals within an advisory capacity to assist both the Syrian army and Hezbollah militias.

The semi-official Fars news agency said on Tuesday some 30 military personnel from the Revolutionary Guard have been killed in Syria in recent weeks, including high-ranking figures such as Col. Mostafa Ezzatollah, Gen. Farshad Hasoonizadeh, and Gen. Hossein Hamedani, who were all killed in Aleppo.

Meanwhile, the source told Asharq Al-Awsat several Revolutionary Guard generals from Ahvaz province, which has a large Iranian–Arab population, have “chosen retirement and pursuing business activities” rather than having to head to Syria.

The Revolutionary Guard court-marshals have now opened an official investigation into the large numbers of suddenly retired generals from the region in what they called “this critical time” for the Revolutionary Guard, according to the source.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is charged with defending the values of Iran’s Islamic Revolution both inside the country and abroad and members must pledge unwavering loyalty to the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The source also said a recent rise in deaths among the much-feared Quds Force—an elite paramilitary unit of the Revolutionary Guard charged with carrying out foreign missions—has led its leadership to begin recruiting higher-ranking officers to fight in Syria.

Iranian opposition publication Rooz Online has reported recently that the Revolutionary Guard have begun utilizing new recruitment initiatives in the Sistan and Baluchistan province, in order to bolster their depleting ranks.

Recruiters are targeting the province’s religious and ethnic minorities—which include Kurds, Baluchs, and Sunni Muslims—as well as the poor, offering the equivalent of 830 dollars for six weeks’ service in Syria following training.

#5  Usually Persian and Arab "guard" and "elite" units are very good at beating up civilians and local militia units.

When facing a determined foe, they do not perform well and take large numbers of casualties and then flee.

Learning how to fight properly is hard and takes discipline. Usually something that arab and persian units have a severe lack of.

#6  Usually Persian and Arab "guard" and "elite" units are very good at beating up civilians and local militia units

A likely, and mainly accurate, generalization.

However, the IRGC started off as a paramilitary, internal security organization. It still functions in that role, though it gained the trappings of a more conventional force (actually it's more powerful than Iran's regular military)after the Iran-Iraq war.

Despite that, the IRGC is currently organized for waging unconventional(asymmetric) warfare. Also, being Iranian, there's also the usual habit of "making a rial or two on the side" involved. The IRGC has significant influence in the Iranian economy, and they're not "institutional" holdings.

My suspicion is that there aren't many inclined to drop everything and play professional soldier.

Syrian government forces drive ISIS from oilfield in Hama
[ARA News] DAMASCUS – Backed by the Lebanese militia of Hezbollah, forces loyal to the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad attacked positions of the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) in Hama province, central Syria, seizing control of an oilfield with its facilities after clashes with ISIS insurgents, local sources reported on Wednesday.

Speaking to ARA News in Hama, media activist Khaled Mahmoud said that the Syrian army and allied Hezbollah militants forced ISIS to withdraw from an oilfield and its surroundings in al-Salamiyah sub-district in Hama province.

“ISIS has lost dozens of militants during the clashes near Aqayrbat town in al-Salamiyah suburbs,” the source reported.

Subsequent to heavy clashes with the radical group, the pro-regime forces have taken control of several hills on the highway of Khanasser-Ithraya, between Aleppo and Hama.

Khanasser-Ithraya highway is considered a key supply route for the regime’s army in Aleppo.

“Four ISIS’ armored vehicles equipped with anti-aircraft machinegun have been destroyed by Syrian regime’s army,” Mahmoud told ARA News.

Over the past few days, the Syrian army, supported by the Lebanese Hezbollah fighters and Iranian troops, intensified attacks on ISIS positions along the road of Khanasser-Ithraya between Aleppo and Hama, causing the death of at least 17 militants and the injury of more others.

On Wednesday, pro-regime forces recaptured the Khanasser-Ithraya road, which is believed to be the only supply line for the pro-Assad forces in the southern countryside of Aleppo.

Syrian forces regain MSR near Aleppo
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Syrian army forces regained control of a key highway southeast of Aleppo on Wednesday, recapturing the government’s only supply route to the city following clashes with the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS), local activists reported.

ISIS militants had seized the regime’s supply line last month.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, media activist Naser Halabi said that pro-Assad forces were able to regain the key highway of Khanaser-Ithraya which connects Aleppo with the cities of Hama and Homs in the south.

“The road is the only supply route through the regime-held western areas of Aleppo, where nearly 2 million people reside,” he added.

Pro-regime media sources circulated a footage on the social media, showing the road being reopened by the army.

Syrian rebels operate mainly in the eastern part of Aleppo ــthe country’s most populous areas before the outbreak of 2011 uprising.

In October, ISIS had taken control of most of the regime’s checkpoints on the Khanaser-Ithraya road and seized large deal of ammunition from army outposts following fierce clashes.

“Fierce battles continue in Aleppo’s surroundings since months, but Syrian army, supported by Lebanese Hezbollah militia and Iranian fighters, launched an offensive to regain territories from rebels and jihadist groups,” Halabi told ARA news.

“The Assad-Iranian joint operations are aimed at clearing rebel-held areas south of Aleppo rather than the city itself,” he reported.

Since the start of the Russian airstrikes nearly a month ago in support of the embattled Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, this was one of several operations carried out by pro-Assad ground forces and allied Shiite groups.

Syrian army is also trying to advance to Aleppo’s east towards the Kweires military airport, aiming to lift a siege imposed by ISIS extremists and other factions.
