Afghanistan
4 insurgents die in work accident in Paktia
At least one militant was killed and three others were wounded in an explosion triggered by an improvised explosive device in Paktia province.

The 203rd Thunder Corps of the Afghan Military in the Southeast said the incident took place as a group of insurgents who were looking to plan an IED on a roadside in Zazai district.

The source further added that one militant identified as Mohammad Wali has been killed and three others have sustained injuries.

According to the Thunder Corps, the Afghan armed forces have also discovered and defused three improvised explosive devices in Paktia and Wardak provinces.

The anti-government armed militant groups frequently use explosives materials for the roadside bombings and car bombings to target the government staff and security personnel.

However, in majority of such incidents the ordinary civilians are targeted besides such bombings incur casualties to the security personnel and in some cases the Taliban militants themselves are killed or wounded.

A total of 10,453 civilian casualties – 3,438 people killed and 7,015 injured – were documented in the 2017 Annual Report released last month by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the UN Human Rights Office.

The report further added that the high number of casualties to the civilians were inflicted by suicide bombings and other attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Afghan forces ring up 15 Taliban in Herat
At least 17 people including Afghan security personnel and Taliban insurgents were killed and 12 others were wounded during a clash in western Herat province of Afghanistan.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Jilani Farhad confirmed that the incident took place in Chesht-e-Sharif district on Monday.

Farhad further added that 15 Taliban insurgents were killed and 8 others were wounded during the clash with the Afghan security forces.

He also added that an Afghan soldier and a member of the public uprising forces also lost their lives during the clash and four others were wounded.

Herat is among the relatively calm provinces in the West and fewer terrorist related incidents have been reported from the province since the fall of the Taliban regime.

However, the anti-government armed militant groups have been attempting to destabilize the province which borders some of the restive provinces in the South and Northwest as well as in the West.

This comes as at least fifteen civilians were killed or wounded in an explosion in Shindand district of Herat province late on Monday evening.

1 dead in Pak missile barrage in Kunar
At least one civilian was killed and seven others wounded in Pakistan’s missile attack on eastern Kunar province, local officials said Tuesday.

Ghani Samim, Kunar governor’s spokesman, told TOLOnews that in the past week nearly 1,500 missiles have been fired on Kunar province, killing one civilian and wounding seven others.

Samim said after a break of two days, shelling started up again on Monday night. Almost 400 missiles have landed in Kunar province since Monday night, he said.

“One civilian was killed in Sarkano and seven others were wounded,” Samim told TOLOnews.

Samim further added that most of the missiles landed in Sarkano and Dangam district of the province.

Security officials have not yet commented.

In February last year, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) warned that Pakistan’s missile attacks on the eastern regions of the country would have serious consequences, suggesting that a diplomatic solution to the issue between the two neighbors was needed.

However, Pakistani officials in the past have claimed that they targeted only terrorist groups by firing off the missiles but residents said the missiles hit their houses and the surrounding forests.

Taliban destroy school in Nangarhar
Armed Taliban insurgents set fire to sections of a boy’s school in eastern Nangarhar province early Tuesday morning, Nangarhar media office confirmed.

According to a statement issued by the provincial media office, Taliban insurgents entered Hazar Naw High School at about 3am local time and set fire to the administration block of the school.

Some school documents were destroyed in the fire. However, fire fighters were able to bring the fire under control before it spread to the rest of the school, the statement said.

Pajhwok Afghan News meanwhile reports that education department spokesman Mohammad Asif Shinwari said about 12 insurgents tied up two guards before setting the fire.

Shinwari also called on police to investigate the matter and on tribal elders to help track down and prosecute the culprits.

According to the statement, classes resumed as normal on Tuesday.

Africa North
Libyan army unit pledges allegiance to LNA
The Sebha-based 6th Infantry Brigade declared a unilateral ceasefire and re-assured its allegiance to the Khalifa Hafter-led Libyan National Army (LNA). In its statement issued yesterday, the 6th Infantry Brigade also stressed that it will “defend itself” against any attacks from those it described as “outlaws and criminal gangs”.

The statement comes as the House of Representatives declares an emergency today in the south of Libya.

Following on from the 6th Infantry Brigade ceasefire announcement yesterday, the Tebu Council of Elders announced today a ceasefire and agreed to open the Gortha agriculture road that they had blocked for a week. The Tebu Council of Elders said they had agreed to a ceasefire due to efforts made by Fezzan towns/villages Council of Elders throughout last week.

The Gortha agriculture road is a main road that connects Sebha to southern municipalities and villages. Its closure had worsened living conditions and caused shortages in fuel and food supplies.

It will be recalled that fighting broke out in Sebha in early February this year between Tebus and Awlad Sulieman which led to acts of retribution and to the death of Tebu civil activist at Nassiriya Cafe in Sebha.

Initial peace efforts that were conducted by Tebu and Awlad Sulieman elders in Sebha proved unsuccessful. A number of reconciliation delegates followed from eastern Libya, the Libya Reconciliation Council of Elders, Zintan and finally the Presidency Council-formed Ceasefire Committee. However, they have all failed to broker a ceasefire and prevent the sporadic breakout of fighting or gunfire.

Libya’s political split is not helping the situation in the south as both Tripoli and Tobruk engage in separate reconciliation and military efforts – often pulling in opposite directions. The LNA had launched its “Law enforcement” operation on 19 March in reaction to the ongoing fighting in the south of Libya with its Air Force targeting Chadian militias in the region.

Monday’s statement was signed by Brigadier Khalifa Abdulhafeed Khalifa Omar who had been appointed by Hafter to replace Brigadier Ihmied Mohammed Salim Al Ataibi following the latter’s rejection of the LNA in March and his declared allegiance to the Serraj-led Presidency Council’s Ministry of Defence instead.

Awlad Sulieman tribe who make-up the large part of the 6th Infantry Brigade accuses the Tebus of harbouring “Chadian Tebus” and attempting to take control of Sebha, while Tebus deny these accusations and refuse to recognise the 6th Infantary Brigade as being representative of the army in Sebha.

There was also a major protest of southern municipalities on Monday evening, including Sebha, Brak Shati and Ubari, demanding an end to the fighting in Sebha that has had a knock-on effect on their daily life; food and fuel shortages, blocked roads and an increase in theft and hijack.

Awlad Sulieman and Tebus previously signed a peace agreement on 30 March 2017, although discontent quietly spread among many Sebha residents who did not receive compensation for their losses caused by the fighting. There is a perception by some in the south that such funds have been made available by the Italian government.

However, others attribute the Sebha violence to the simmering tensions caused by the political polarization between the Libyan stakeholders in the north, while others attribute it to the effect of foreign infiltration and activities of extremist groups in the area.

According to Sebha Medical Administration Office, the fighting forced some 4,000 people to flee from their Tayouri and Nasiriya neighbourhoods to seek shelter in public schools at Manshiya and other places inside the town.

Sebha Medical Centre, located near the clash zone and inaccessible for Tebus, was also reportedly hit by shells and bullets, although it remains in operational with the death toll rising up to 12 deaths and with over 30 wounded. Sebha’s Italian-era fortress was also seriously damaged by heavy artillery shells.

Sebha, the principal town and capital of southern Libya’s historical Fezzan region is suffering severe shortages in essential necessities with large parts of the town remaining virtually inaccessible to civilians.

Yemeni forces launch rockets on Soddy base in Jizan
The Yemeni rocketry forces managed on Tuesday to launch a ballistic missile (Badr1) onto a Saudi military camp in Jizan.

This strike came hours after the Yemeni rocketry forces launched two ballistic missiles onto a military camp for the mercenaries and the Sudanese army in Jizan as well.

Yemen has been since March 2015 under a brutal aggression by Saudi-led coalition, in a bid to restore power to fugitive former president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Tens of thousands of Yemenis have been injured and martyred in Saudi-led strikes, with the vast majority of them are civilians.

However, the allied forces of the Yemeni Army and popular committees established by Ansarullah revolutionaries have been heroically confronting the aggression with all means, inflicting huge losses upon Saudi-led forces.

Europe
Italy Breaks Tunisian Human-Trafficking Ring
[AnNahar] Italian police broke up a gang including suspects with jihadist sympathies who charged migrants colonists thousands of euros to rush them in speedboats across the Mediterranean from Tunisia, officials said Tuesday.

Officers tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
13 Italian, Tunisian and Moroccan suspects in a dawn raid on the network accused of trafficking people and contraband cigarettes, a police front man told AFP.

The traffickers brought migrants colonists from Nabeul in north-eastern Tunisia to Trapani on the west coast of Sicily, police said in a separate statement.

The gang would bring between 10 and 15 people a time, earning up to 70,000 euros per four-hour crossing, with hundreds of kilos of contraband cigarettes also stashed in the boats.

The police statement said that "some members" of the network had jihadist sympathies, showing "hostile attitudes to Western culture" and "spreading propaganda via fake profiles on social media."

In a wiretapped telephone conversation, one of the gang's associates asked fellow members to pray for him while he went to La Belle France to carry "dangerous actions, after which he might not be able to return."

Since the summer of 2017, Italia has seen a rise in Tunisian migrants colonists arriving in Sicily or on the island of Lampedusa, despite a repatriation agreement with the Tunisian government.

The Italian Interior Ministry says 6,000 Tunisians landed in 2017 and more than 1,300 have arrived since the start of this year.

That number however does not include the so-called "ghost landings", of which the only trace is wet clothes found on the beaches of western Sicily.

France Arrests 14 over Vicious New Year's Attack on Police
Note how carefully the religion/ethnicity of the miscreants is never mentioned, dear Reader. Only the location in a suburb gives an indication that they are Moslem colonists.
[AnNahar] Twelve men and two women were tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
Tuesday over a brutal attack on two officers called to a New Year's Eve party in a Gay Paree suburb, an assault that shocked La Belle France after a video of the female officer's beating circulated on social media.

The government vowed to crack down on urban violence after the attack, which occurred after the officers became separated from the bulk of the force intervening to halt a party in Champigny-sur-Marne, east of the capital.

They had had been called to clear 300 to 400 people attempting to see in 2018 at an unauthorised warehouse party.

Footage that soon went viral showed the 25-year-old policewoman writhing on the floor as she was kicked by the crowd, as well as revellers flipping over a car.

The 14 people arrested, aged 16 to 20, are suspected of striking the officer, filming the scene or not aiding a person in danger, police sources told AFP.

During searches of their homes, some suspects were found with clothes worn by people seen in the video of the attack, and a pellet-filled grenade which police suspect was taken from the scene, sources close to the inquiry said.

Some of the suspects were known to security forces.

"All those responsible have been arrested," Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told LCI television.

The policewoman's fellow officer, a 48-year-old captain, had his nose broken after being punched in the face, but the assault was not filmed, and Sherlocks have not found his attackers.

The incident prompted an outcry over violence against the police, along with demonstrations by officers calling for more resources and tougher penalties for delinquents.

An estimated 5,767 officers were maimed in the line of duty in 2016, according to a justice ministry report.

Shortly after the attack, Collomb had called for reforms to improve lives in "impoverished, ghettoised" French suburbs, which have long suffered a reputation for violence and poverty.

La Belle France has since introduced new pilot schemes in local policing, part of a raft of policies announced by President Emmanuel Macron to fight poverty in downtrodden and high-immigrant districts.

Tensions routinely flare on New Year's Eve, when youths in many poor neighbourhoods across the country set fire to hundreds of cars, leading to dozens of arrests.

Ten ISIS fanatics who planned to film beheading, attack police, banks and Jooos in Barcelona jailed
[DailyMail]
  • Five Moroccans, four Spaniards and a Brazilian jailed in Spain

  • Ran ISIS-linked jihadist cell planning terror attacks in Barcelona

  • Had proposed to stage a kidnapping and execution of an 'infidel'

  • Terror cell panned to attack 'police, banks or Jewish institutions'
Ten members of an ISIS-linked cell who planned to launch terror attacks in Barcelona have been jugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in Spain's National Court today.

Five Moroccans, four Spaniards and a Brazilian, calling themselves the 'Islamic Fraternity, Group for preaching jihad' were handed between eight and 12 years in jail.

The group, based in Terrassa, near Barcelona, had planned attacks against 'police, banks or Jewish institutions' and also expressed desires to join ISIS and film a jihadist execution video.

The ten men were sentenced to jail in the National Court for 'belonging to a terrorist organization', documents said.

The three leaders of the group were given 12 years in jail while the seven others got eight years.

In March 2015, the main leader of the cell, a Spaniard who had converted to Islam, proposed to kidnap and decapitate an 'infidel' whom he had already identified, film the killing and then broadcast the video online before fleeing to Syria.

He had previously proposed that the group 'commit an attack against the Catalan parliament, which no one had objected to,' according to the court ruling.

'He also justified decapitations and talked about making handmade bombs to commit attacks.'

Police found documents calling for jihad at his home and books on European organizations such as the Basque separatist group ETA
ETA or Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (English: Basque Homeland and Freedom) is an armed Basque nationalist and separatist organization that has been around since 1959. It demands independence from Spain and France for the Greater Basque Country. The group is proscribed as a terrorist organization by most civilized countries. More than 700 members of the organization are incarcerated in prisons in Spain, La Belle France, and other countries, though members do seem to find ready hospitality in Venezuela.
or Germany's far-left Red Army Faction, the ruling said.

Members of the cell had also gone on a recce in Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, where they took photos of the train station, a luxury seaside hotel, a shopping mall and a cop shoppe.

One member went to Syria in April 2014 and died in Fallujah in Iraq the following year.

Three others tried to follow in his footsteps at the end of 2014 but were detained at the border between Bulgaria and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
According to the interior ministry, close to a third of all arrests for 'jihadist terrorism' in Spain were made in Catalonia last year.
The Times of Israel adds this apparently unimportant tidbit:
The 10, whose cell was called "Islamic Fraternity, Group for Preaching Jihad," were sentenced for "belonging to a terrorist organization," the court says.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Flies 3 Suspected Gulenists from Gabon in Covert Swoop
[AnNahar] The Ottoman Turkish spy agency has flown three suspected members of the movement blamed for the 2016 failed coup back to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
from the African state of Gabon in a covert operation, state media said Tuesday.

As part of a secret mission carried out by the National Intelligence Organization (MIT), the men were brought back to Turkey on a private plane from Libreville, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The suspects are accused of belonging to the group of U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
who Ankara says orchestrated the bloody July 15 coup bid two years ago, aimed at unseating President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
Ankara calls his group the Fethullah Terror Organization (FETO) but Gulen insists he runs a purely peaceful movement and denies any link to the failed plot.

The latest MIT swoop comes on the heels of the controversial expulsion of six alleged Gulen group members from Kosovo in a similar operation.

Gulen's group had built up huge influence in Turkey but also abroad -- notably in Africa, the Balkans and Central Asia -- in particular through an education network.

In the Gabon operation, one of the suspects was a school principal in Libreville and an education coordinator of Gulen schools operating across Kenya.

The second suspect was also a school principal, while the third was director general of Gulen schools in Gabon and steered the group's money transfers from Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
to Africa, according to Anadolu.

The news agency reported some high-ranking Gulen movement members were detained on March 23 in a raid by the Gabon security forces.

But there was no immediate information on Libreville's role in the operation.

Gabon is ruled by President Ali Bongo Ondimba, the son of Omar Bongo Ondimba who governed the oil-rich nation for more than 41 years until his death in 2009. Ali Bongo Ondimba held talks with Erdogan in Ankara in 2015.

Diyala dead dudes documented: 2 truckloads of turbans are no more

Islamic State members killed as Paramilitary troops foil attack in Diyala

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) The pro-government paramilitary troops have repulsed an attack launched by Islamic State members in Diyala province, a security source was quoted saying on Tuesday.

Speaking to Almaalomah website, the source said, “two vehicles carrying some Islamic State members attempted infiltration into Udhaim region, before al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) noticed them and repelled the attack.”

The troops, according to the source, “managed to burn the two vehicles killing those on board.”

Officials warn against Islamic State threats, say U.S. jets operations reduced between Diyala, Salahuddin

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) The security committee of Diyala provincial council has warned against growing movements by Islamic State remnants in many uninhabited villages on the borders between Diyala and Salahuddin provinces.

Speaking to Alghad Press on Tuesday, Abdul Khaleq al-Azzawi, member of the committee, said “the movements of Islamic State have become dangerous in border regions and villages between Diyala and Salahuddin.”

The militants, according to Azzawi are mainly noticed, “in 14 villages that are empty of security troops or residents, including Mutaibija, al-Bu Kanaan, al-Mayta and al-Subai’at.”

Azzawi urged necessity “to carry out military operations to purge the border regions.”

In related news, a paramilitary leader in Diyala has said the deployment of joint troops has forced the U.S. jets to reduce its operations in the desert between Diyala and Salahuddin.

“Security forces, along with al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) have been deployed in the desert regions between Diyala and Salahuddin. This forced the U.S. jets to reduce its air landing operations, which supports Islamic State in the desert,” Odai al-Khadran, a leader with PMFs, told Almaalomah website.

“Islamic State members now rely on the Iraqi leaders through counterfeiting their nationalities, however, Iraqi troops managed to arrest them,” he added.

Senior security leaders previously indicated air landing operations by the U.S.-led Coalition jets to support the IS members besieged in some regions.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russian officials: We will attack launch sites of missiles sent against Syria
[Columbus Dispatch] Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon went even further, saying any missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and the launching sites targeted ‐ a stark warning of a potential major confrontation in Syria.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened military action after last weekend’s suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town near Damascus, which activists and rescuers say killed at least 40 people. The Syrian government and its ally Russia deny that such an attack happened.

Asked about Moscow’s reaction to a possible U.S. strike on Syria, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia still hopes that all parties in the conflict will refrain from taking "steps that could gravely destabilize the fragile situation in the region."

State news agency RIA Novosti on Wednesday quoted Andrei Krasov, deputy chairman of the State Duma’s defense committee, as saying that Russia will treat a U.S. airstrike on Syria "not just as an act of aggression but a war crime of the Western coalition."

Vladimir Shamanov, a retired general who heads the defense affairs committee in the lower house of parliament, said in televised remarks Tuesday that a U.S. strike in Syria could hurt Russian servicemen and trigger retaliation.

#2  The ruble seems to be collapsing- why, and how might that affect Russian actions in Syria?

#3  So the little dictator is going to attack Diego Garcia, boomer subs, Whiteman AFB in Missouri (A US state pootie in the center of the nation).
So what the fucker is threatening is total nuclear war if he doesn't get his way.
One proper response to such a threat is on time total war. He's clearly gone around the bend.
Another response would be for Israel and Saudi to take out his ally The Islamic Republic of Iran at the same time as the attack.
Like where does Puttie want to go with this?

#4  Of course another Putin ally is North Korea.
If you take on Puttie with this attitude you would need to exterminate his allies too..

#5  Not that I am actually advocating something here, just trying to parse where Putin is trying to go.
Maybe if we really really want a message to Syria it requires a simultaneous decapitation strike on Russia? That seems to be Putin's stance.

So is it bluster or does he have some real strategic reason he has to be where he is in Syria?
So strategic that nothing else matters?

That would be more interesting to take out than Syria's air force?

Securing warm water ports in the Med?

#7  Ports are fungible.

Making the MidEast unstable enough that it's oil doesn't compete with the Russian or US production would fit well with a Putin master strategy.

Bases and footprint are not strategy they are assets that may or may not be strategic for a period of time.

Money and dragon horde materials are always a purpose for strategy in the first place.

That, also, explains Russian sourced funding of environmental and anti-oil/coal extraction movements in the US and the rest of the west.

Pointedly they increase the value of oil on the market and the share of it held by the Russian entity. The value of the Russian dragon hordes.

Just my POV.

#11  Summing up, the 'news' is jihadi-sourced and why would Assad snatch defeat from the jaws of victory? He's not a Republican!

The Ambo also notes the media is just repeating the hysteria, not investigating the sources, thus playing right into the hands of ISIS.

US warbirds buzz Russian airbases
BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:30 P.M.) – A U.S. warplane is reportedly flying close to the Russian airbases in the Latakia and Tartous provinces of Syria, a military air monitor (Twitter: @Aircraftspots) reported this afternoon.

According to the Twitter account of Aircraft Spots, a US Navy P-8A 168439 PS102 departed from Sigonella in the eastern Mediterranean towards the Syrian coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartous.

The aircraft monitor was able to track the route of the aircraft, showing that it was circling the Mediterranean between Syria and Cyprus.

This latest report comes just hours after the Russian A-50 jet began flying along the Syrian coast to track any potential U.S. air activity in the eastern Mediterranean.

Syrian Islamic rebels pound Latakia with rocket artillery
BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:55 A.M.) – The jihadist rebels launched several missiles towards the hometown of the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on Tuesday, a military source told Al-Masdar News last night.

According to the source, the jihadist rebels of Jabhat Tahrir Souriya fired at least four missiles at the Latakia Governorate town of Qurdaha on Tuesday evening.

The source added that the jihadist missiles were fired from the nearby Al-Ghaab Plain in the Idlib Governorate.

In retaliation for the jihadist missile strike, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) began targeting Jabhat Tahrir Souriya’s positions in the Al-Ghaab Plain town of Al-Ziyarah, scoring several direct hits on the jihadist rebels.

Militant evacuation from al-Ghouta resumes
BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:30 A.M.) – Buses evacuating fighters out of the Syrian town of Douma departed the area through the al-Wafiddeen checkpoint, near Eastern Ghouta, Tuesday.

Footage shows the buses as they arrived and passed through al-Wafiddeen. They are reportedly then set to continue to Jarablus, in the north of Syria.

In the last few weeks, deals were made between militants and Syrian government forces, which allowed militants and their families to relocate out of the area into the north of Syria.
