Afghanistan
Women among several Afghan Air Force pilots graduated in Czech Republic
[KhaamaPress] A group of Afghan Air Force fixed-wing pilots graduated in Czech Republic after completing a 15-month training program.

The NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
-led Resolute Support Mission in a statement said "The newest Afghan Air Force fixed-wing pilots, including two women, graduated today from a 15-month training program in the Czech Republic."

According to Resolute Support Mission "The pilots received ground, flight & English training. They now bring those skills to the battlefield."

The Resolute Support Mission had earlier said the Afghan Air Force (AAF) will graduate its newest group of 24 pilots of fixed wing aircraft, including two female pilots, at a graduation ceremony at the Lom Praha Flight Training Center (CLV) in Pardubice, Czech Republic, June 27.

According a Resolute Support Mission report published on 23rd June, the ceremony will recognize the proficiency reached throughout the 15-month training during which students received ground and flight training as well as English training. These graduates are now qualified to operate three different kinds of fixed-wing Cessna (150, 172, 208).

The report further added that they will further develop their skills through additional training in Afghanistan.

Currently the Afghan Air Force has one female pilot, but thanks to the efforts carried out by the Afghan Ministry of Defense more women have been encouraged to pursue a career in the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, including the Air Force.

Female students went through the same coursework and were held to the same standards as their male counterparts, and were able to meet and, in some areas, exceed their training goals, according to Resolute Support Mission report.

This comes as efforts are underway by the Afghan government and the international allies of Afghanistan to boost the capabilities of the Afghan national defense and security forces, specifically the Afghan Air Force.

The coalition forces officials in Afghanistan had earlier said that the size of the Afghan Air Force will be tripled over the next five years with the addition of new equipment and aircraft.

Libyan army warns against establishment of foreign base in South
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Libyan army on Friday warned of the desire of some international parties to establish a military presence in some areas of southern Libya, under the pretext of addressing illegal immigration, in response to an Italian proposal to establish "reception centers and identification of migrants colonists" in southern Libya.

The General Command of the army warned in a statement the parties carrying out this work, saying that this step "blatantly violates the rules of international law and constitutes a blatant attack on the Libyan state and its illusory sovereignty and territory", stressing that it is able to "protect the Libyan state and its borders and its people, institutions, installations and economic capabilities against any act of aggression and violation of its national illusory sovereignty."

On Thursday, Italian media reported an agreement between Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord of Libya Fayez al-Sarraj and Italia’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini to set up an Italian military base in the southern Libyan city of Gatt.

#1  The EU should buy the funky south east corner of Libya down next to Sudan and turn it into the Muzzie refugee state.

Send all your Euro trash there. Use it as a training ground for troops learning to protect borders, give them some cash and tell them to build their own civilization. It would be cheaper.

#2  There is a small town on Libya’s south-west border with Algeria that has traditionally occupied a key point on the migrant route to Europe.

“Ghat is the Gate of Africa for illegal immigration,” local council head of Libya’s south-westernmost border town, Gomani Mohamed Salah, told Middle East Eye with a note of pride. “They come from sub-Saharan Africa, and gather in Ghat to start the journey to the Libyan coast, and then to Italy.”

#1  ...Generally, you hear that nonsense when one side or the other is about to have its a$$ handed to it. The Tamil rebels in Sri Lanka, who never met an agreement they wouldn't break, tried that when the government there finally had enough and went full SPQR on them.

Didn't work, and they pretty much sent down to the last man.

Yemen's warring sides will return to peace talks: UN

envoy to Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
Martin Griffiths has expressed hope that a new round of peace talks between major warring sides of the country could begin next month amid an escalation of fighting in the Red Sea port of Hudaydah.

"I’d like to get the parties together within the next few weeks at the very latest," Griffiths said late on Thursday, adding, "I’m hoping that the (UN) Security Council will meet next week and we’ll put a plan before them as to how we’re going to bring the talks back."

The UN envoy said the warring sides - the ruling Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...

- had announced readiness to engage in the renewed peace initiative.

"Both parties have confirmed to me their willingness to come to the table to restart negotiations. I think it’s long overdue that that should take place. It’s been about two years since the last talks on Yemen," said Griffiths in an interview.

The announcement comes amid an escalating situation in Yemen’s Hudaydah, a port in northwest of the country which is controlled by the Houthis and serves as a vital lifeline for Yemen’s population.

Cracks emerge in European Union’s migrant deal
[IsraelTimes] European Council president warns there's no guarantee agreement to curb migration will work, and La Belle France, Austria rule themselves out of hosting migrant centers

Cracks emerged Friday in Europe’s hard-fought summit deal on migration, as EU President Donald Tusk warned there was no guarantee it would work and La Belle France and Austria ruled themselves out of hosting migrant centres.

The agreement, hammered out during marathon overnight talks, also swiftly came under fire from the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) charity, which said it aimed to turn away even the most vulnerable people from Europe’s shores.

IDF sends aid to Syrians fleeing Daraa in overnight ‘Good Neighbor’ operation
[IsraelTimes] 300 tents, 28 tons of food, including baby food, and 30 tons of clothing and shoes delivered; tens of thousands seek to escape Assad offensive

Israel transferred several dozen tons of humanitarian aid to refugee encampments in southwestern Syria in an overnight operation late Thursday, as tens of thousands of Syrians are fleeing an offensive in neighboring Daraa province by Bashir al-Assad’s forces and the Russian military.

The IDF said it would likely continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the area, but insisted it would not allow Syrian refugees to cross the border.

Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla sails from Spain to raise awareness about Israeli siege
It keeps them busy and wastes their money, butotherwise will once again accomplish nothing.
[AlAhram] After gathering in Spain, Gazoo Freedom Flotilla ships set sail on Thursday from the seaport of Cadiz for the port of Cagliari in Italia on its journey to Gazoo to raise awareness about the 11-year-old Israeli siege of the Strip.

The flotilla trips are organised by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an international coalition composed of civil society organizations and initiatives challenging the Israeli blockade of Gazoo.

Some solidarity events were held in the Spanish city to raise awareness about the siege of the Strip and the suffering of its people.

The ships stopped at some European ports in Denmark, Britannia and Spain. The last two European stops will be in Italia and Greece, before their last leg to Gazoo.

Previous flotilla ships have been stopped in international waters by Israeli naval forces and prevented from reaching Gazoo.

This nonviolent direct action aims to raise international awareness and put pressure on the international community to end the brutal blockade.

The first attempt to break the siege with a flotilla, which was organised in 2010, ended in the killing by Israeli forces of nine activists in international waters on the Ottoman Turkish ship Mavi Marmara.

A Household Expenditure and Consumption Survey, released by the Paleostinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) in May, showed a significant increase in poverty rates in Gazoo, from 38.8 percent in 2011 to 53 percent by the end of 2017.

In the wake of the ’Great March of Return’ demonstrations, which started on 30 March, Gazoo’s already overstretched health sector has been struggling to cope with the mass influx of casualties.

At least 135 Paleostinians have been killed and thousands injured by Israeli occupation forces during the protests near the border with Israel. No Israelis have been killed or injured in the protests.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Lebanon's Hezbollah to work with Syrian state on refugee returns
[AlAhram] Hezbollah will work with the Syrian state and Leb's General Security agency to help return Syrian refugees who want to go back home, its leader said on Friday, a project that critics see as premature in the absence of a peace deal.

His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
, whose Iran-backed movement fights alongside Damascus, also said a "very big victory" was coming in south Syria, where an army offensive has made rapid gains against holy warriors.

As Syrian government forces and their allies retake more territory, some Lebanese officials have stepped up calls for refugees to leave for parts of Syria where violence died down.

U.N. officials and foreign donor states to Leb have said conditions for returns are not yet fulfilled in Syria, where a political deal to end the multi-sided war remains elusive.

In a televised speech, Nasrallah said Hezbollah was establishing a mechanism to return "the biggest possible number" of Syrians refugees who want to go home safely and voluntarily.

"We are ready to help ... and we will continue helping until this matter is settled politically and officially between the Lebanese and Syrian governments," he added.

In the next few months, Hezbollah will directly collect requests for returns from refugees, deliver them to Syrian authorities, and coordinate with General Security, he said.

Leb's Shia Hezbollah has provided vital support to Syria's military in the seven-year war across the border, helping it regain swathes of the country.

The conflict has driven 11 million Syrians from their homes, including more than one million to Leb, nearly a quarter of its population, the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR says. The Lebanese government puts the number at 1.5 million.

Nasrallah said without elaborating that "international and local groups" were misinforming Syrian refugees and scaring them out of leaving Leb to return home.

Leb's Foreign minister Gebran Bassil, whose FPM party is a political ally of Hezbollah, has pressed for more returns and accused UNHCR this month of preventing Syrians from going back.

UNHCR denies this, saying it supports safe return and respects individual decisions to return, while major foreign donors have voiced dismay at what they called "false accusations".

Prime minister-designate Saad al-Hariri, who opposes the Syrian government, has said that Leb is against forced returns of refugees.

President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
...

has called the influx of mainly Sunni Syrian refugees an existential threat to Leb, which maintains a fragile balance between several religious sects.

Nearly 400 refugees left the Lebanese border region of Arsal for Syria on Thursday, a rare case of returns and a small fraction of the estimated 50,000 living in the town.

Major General Abbas Ibrahim, head of General Security, said this was the first batch out of thousands who want to go home.

Still, Ahad Kalkoush, a member of a Syrian refugee council in the town, the bulk of refugees in Arsal will only go back in a U.N.-supervised return, fearing persecution in Syria.

Tehran’s ties with al-Qaeda, extremist Salafist groups
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] New documents from Abbottabad, the Pakistani city where al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was hiding out, uncovered details of deep ties between Iran’s Khomeini regime and several armed “Salafists” groups.

The US Central Intelligence Agency had seized documents in 2011 from Abbottabad that revealed ties between al-Qaeda and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The “Salafist” groups identified in the newly-exposed document include the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria, which began its operations in 1992, and the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, which started its operations in 1982 and reformed again in 1989 before joining al-Qaeda in 2007.
