Reporters Without Borders reacts to the killing of a journalist by Taliban
[KhaamaPress] The Reporters Without Borders, Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) has condemned the murder of a journalist by the Talibs in Western Farah province of Afghanistan.

The local journalist, Javid Noori was reportedly singled out by the Talibs after several people were kidnapped on a highway in Farah province on 5th of January and was later rubbed out.

Noori, who worked for the Farah regional government as well as hosting two programmes on Radio Neshat, was travelling on a bus with around 30 other passengers when it was stopped and searched at a Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
roadblock, RSF said in a news release.

The Taliban shot him after finishing their search, RSF said.

"He was killed after being checked and then moved to one side," RSF said quoted a witness as saying. The Taliban later issued a formal statement announcing "the execution of an enemy officer during a control."

Aged 27, Noori began hosting a Radio Neshat programme called "Psychology of the Green Life" in 2016, after completing his psychology studies at the University of Kabul. For the past year, he had also been hosting the "Friday evening" programme on social issues.

"This summary execution is the first death of a journalist in 2019 to be registered on RSF’s barometer," said Reza Moini, the head of RSF’s Afghanistan-Iran desk. "There is an urgent need to end such practices. We reiterate our appeal to the international community to condition the start of any talks with the Taliban on their giving an explicit undertaking to respect international humanitarian law’s basic treaties, starting with the Geneva Conventions."

The world’s deadliest country for the media in 2018, with a total of 15 journalists killed, Afghanistan is ranked 118th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2018 World Press Freedom Index, the statement added.

The Pak citizens were produced in an Egyptian court after being stuck on a ship off the Egyptian port of Safaga.

According to a Foreign Office statement, an officer from the Pak mission in Cairo was deputed to assist the five sailors during the court proceedings.

The crew was subsequently charged with involvement in smuggling drugs, "which [were] allegedly found on the ship", the blurb said.

Tunisia convicts dozens of jihadists over teen beheading
[PULSE.NG] A Tunisian court has convicted dozens of jihadists over the 2015 murder of a teenage shepherd, but the vast majority remain on the run, a prosecution spokesman said Wednesday.

Mabrouk Soltani, 17, was beheaded as his sheep grazed on Mount Mghilla in central west Tunisia.

The details of the murder sparked outrage, with the victim's cousin forced to watch and carry his head to the family home.

A total of 49 people were convicted on Tuesday over the murder, including 45 in absentia, the prosecutor's spokesman Sofiene Sliti said.

Four were sentenced to death, one of whom is in custody, while the others were sentenced to between 15 and 36 years in prison.

Tunisian courts continue to issue death sentences despite no executions being carried out since 1991.

Those convicted over Soltani's killing were prosecuted under Tunisia's 2015 anti-terror legislation.

The murder was claimed by the Tunisian branch of the Islamic State group, Jund al-Khilafa, in a video which showed the killing.

Two years later, Soltani's brother Khalifa was abducted and killed in the same area, in an attack also claimed by IS.

The mountainous area near the Algerian border is also a stronghold of the Al-Qaeda-linked Okba Ibn Nafaa Battalion.

Since its 2011 revolution, Tunisia has experienced an increase in jihadist attacks that have killed dozens of members of the security forces and at least 59 foreign tourists.

The country has been under a state of emergency since November 2015, when an IS-claimed suicide bombing in Tunis killed 12 presidential guards.

Houthi drone attack hits military base in Yemen
[Aljazeera] A Houthi drone strike has reportedly hit a Yemeni government military parade in Lahij Province, killing several, according to Houthi media and Sky News Arabia.

The attack on the air base in the southern al-Anad area on Thursday reportedly wounded dozens of military personnel, including the Yemeni army chief of staff.

Saudi-owned Al Arabiya news channel reported that five people were killed in the raid.

Abdul Malik Al-Houthi, leader of the Houthi group, announced the strategy of using ballistic missiles and drones in 2017. The group is at war with a Saudi-UAE-led coalition which began its military campaign in Yemen in March 2015, after the Houthis overran the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

The Houthis claim to possess five different drone models according to an infographic on their official Telegram channel.

In November, the rebels said they were halting drone and missile attacks, but tensions have risen recently over how to implement a UN-sponsored peace deal.

Five officers were maimed in the operation, which the statement says foiled a planned attack on infrastructure development in the Eastern Province, which includes Qatif.

Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province has seen bouts of unrest since 2011 when protesters emboldened by the Arab Spring erupted into the streets demanding an end to what they say is discrimination by the Sunni-dominated government.

The Shiite community is estimated to make up between 10 and 15 percent of the kingdom’s population of 32 million, but the government has released no official statistics.

The government denies discrimination against Shiites.

According to a report from pro-Yemeni government media, the Saudi Coalition and the Yemeni Army managed to capture a large number of hilltops and points in the Qaniyah area after launching a big attack earlier today.

The Saudi Coalition and their Yemeni allies also killed several members of the Houthi forces and seized their weapons before securing much of the Qaniyah area of the al-Bayda Governorate.

The al-Bayda Governorate is currently the scene of some of the most intense festivities in Yemen, as the Saudi Coalition looks to expel the Houthi forces from this province.

From Trinidad to Mosul: Why the Caribbean island's young set sail for ISIS territory
[The National] To many, it's incredible that Imam Yasin Abubakr has not been jailed, sent to the gallows, or quietly bumped off. A protege of Libya's late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, over the years the Islamist leader has been charged with everything from treason and murder through to overthrowing a government.

Yet the 77-year-old cleric is not some Middle East insurgent who's somehow stayed one step beyond the law. Instead, he preaches openly from a mosque on the Caribbean island of Trinidad ‐ a place more known for reggae and rum than calls to prayer.

The laid-back paradise of the tourist brochures is not one Mr Abubakr recognises, however. A black Muslim convert, he embraced Islam back in the 1960s, convinced that centuries of Christianity had done little for Trinidad's African slave descendants.

In the 1970s, his self-styled religious sect, the Jamaat Al Muslimeen, forged links with Gaddafi's Libya, which was then courting radical movements worldwide. But far from simply reading the late dictator’s Little Green book, he took its revolutionary rhetoric literally ‐ launching an armed coup in which his sect took Trinidad's cabinet hostage for six days.

That was back in 1990, since then he has mellowed somewhat. Today, the only man ever to stage an Islamist coup in the Western hemisphere warns his followers against the politics of the gun ‐ especially if it tempts them to more radical groups like ISIS.

Belgium charges man with theft of Brussels bombings documents
[AlAhram] Belgian authorities have nabbed
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
a man already convicted for terrorism and charged him with theft of material from prosecutors, including information on autopsies of the victims of the 2016 Brussels bombings.

Brussels prosecutors said on Wednesday that they had become aware of the theft last Friday and had then on Saturday detained a man they identified as E.K.I., who they said had previously received a five-year sentence for participating in the activities of a terrorist group.

They said the man had attended a probation meeting on Thursday in the same building as the prosecutors.

He is charged with having entered the office of the prosecutors’ medical expert and taken the hard disc backing up the expert’s computer, along with various other items. The back-up included information on the autopsies of the victims of the Brussels bombings in March 2016, which killed 32 people.

They said there were no indications to suggest that it was a targeted theft of specific documents or information.

The suspect had denied carrying out the theft, prosecutors said, and the stolen items had not been found.

Syrian asylum seeker charged with murder of German that triggered Chemnitz riots
[ALMASDARNEWS] German prosecutors have charged a Syrian man with second-degree murder for the stabbing of a citizen in the east German city of Chemnitz, sparking violent protests and festivities with police in August.

The suspect, who is reportedly a Syrian asylum seeker and was identified only as Alaa S. due to national privacy laws, is accused of stabbing a German-Cuban man during a quarrel.

This development comes as Berlin issued an international arrest warrant for another suspect in the case, who is reportedly on the run. The suspect of Iraqi origin was identified as Farhad R.A.

Daniel Hillig was killed in Chemnitz on 26 August, allegedly by two migrants colonists of Iraqi and Syrian descent.

Earlier, prosecutors pledged to make a decision on the third suspect in the Chemnitz killing over the next few days. Iraqi citizen Yousif Awas was released from custody due to a lack of evidence in September, according to his lawyer.

Mr. Hillig’s murder sparked a wave of anti-immigrant rallies and counter-protests in the subsequent weeks, with thousands of people taking to the streets of the Saxon city.

Woman killed in 'indiscriminate' shelling by Indian troops across LoC
[DAWN] A woman lost her life and another sustained injuries as Indian troops on Wednesday targeted civilian population in two different areas of Azad Kashmire from across the line of control (LoC), officials said.

Neelum Deputy Commissioner Raja Mahmood Shahid told Dawn that "indiscriminate" shelling by Indian troops began at about 8:50am in the morning and continued till 2pm intermittently, during which the troops targeted civilian population in district headquarters Athmuqam and its surrounding hamlets.

A mortar shell landed in the courtyard of a house in Bugna village on the outskirts of the district headquarters, killing Sajida Bibi, a 35-year-old mother of six, he said.

"Splinters from the shell pierced through her neck, causing huge loss of blood that led to her on the spot death," the deputy commissioner said after visiting the aggrieved family. Shahid handed over a cheque of Rs0.3 million on behalf of the AJK government to the heirs of the dear departed woman.

According to the deputy commissioner, Pak forces gave a "befitting response to the unprovoked shelling by Indian forces."

It’s for the second time that Indian troops have directly targeted civilian population of Athmuqam in less than two weeks.

Syrian Army kills several Turkish-backed rebels in new attack on northern Hama
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels were not able to catch a break on Wednesday as they found themselves sandwiched between two separate forces that were both looking to inflict damage on their defenses.

Led by their Elite Republican Guard units, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) began their assault on northern Hama today by launching a large barrage of surface-to-surface missiles and artillery shells.

According to a military source in nearby Mhardeh, the Syrian Arab Army managed to kill several members of the Ottoman Turkish-backed al-Izza Army, while also destroying a number of trenches around the town of al-Latamnah.

The Syrian Arab Army’s attack was reportedly carried out in response to Jaish al-Izza’s infiltration attempt last night.

Jaish al-Izza has repeatedly attempted to bypass the Syrian Army’s defenses in northern Hama so that they could plant explosives along the government roads.

According to reports, the man speaking at the start of the video is an Algerian Sharia scholar named "Abu Muthana al-Jaza’iri" ‐ he is allegedly a member of the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front
...the Turkic paramilitaries intended to replace with their native jihadi ferocity all the highly trained Turkish soldiers Sultan Erdogan I the much beloved has jailed in the last few years for not worshipping the ground he walks upon. The Uighurs and so forth who did not join Al Nusra or ISIS seem to have ended up here...
Al-Jaza’iri spends a minute attempting to behead the Syrian man, despite the latter’s pleas to be shot instead of mutilated by the rebel forces.
“Shaddup! We may be incompetents with dull blades, but by Allah you’re gonna die in very kewl agony!”
The man is allegedly called abu-Fuad from the village of Musaybeen near Ariha in Idlib.

The Algerian member of the NLF says the Syrian man smuggled members of the Syrian government out of the rebel-held areas to the town of Rahjan in northeastern Hama.

The date of the video is unknown; however, al-Rahjan was captured by the Syrian government approximately one year ago, so the video is likely new.

Turkish-backed rebels surrender last positions in southwest Idlib
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels have surrendered their last positions in the southwestern countryside of the Idlib Governorate on Wednesday, local opposition activists claimed via social media.

According to a statement released by Harakat Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
, they have agreed to hand over all of their territories to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
in the Shashabo Mountain and al-Ghaab Plain.

With Ahrar al-Sham’s surrender of southwest Idlib, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham now controls all of the area near the Syrian Arab Army’s front-lines in the al-Ghaab Plain.

Despite Ahrar al-Sham’s surrender, the Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels still control several towns in the neighboring Hama Governorate.

The Ottoman Turkish-backed Jaish al-Izza faction is currently in control of several towns in northern Hama, including al-Latamnah and Kafr Zita.

Jihadist rebels allegedly launch new attack on southern Afrin
[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
allegedly launched a new attack, today, on the southern countryside of the Afrin region.

According to local activists in the Aleppo province, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham attacked the defenses of the Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels inside the Jindares District of the Afrin region.

No advances have been confirmed as of yet, but some opposition activists claim Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham is advancing through the area.

If these reports prove true, this will go against the claims that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham had vowed to not attack the Afrin region or expand any further into rebel-held Aleppo.

SDF capture 8 more foreign ISIS fighters
[Rudaw] Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) captured eight foreign ISIS fighters in Hajin, days after announcing the detention of five others.

The eight include citizens of the United States, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, and central Asia. The American is a minor.

They were plotting an attack against civilians and were seized during an operation on Sunday and Monday, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) announced in a statement on Wednesday.

They are identified as Soulay Noah Su (aka Abu Souleiman al-Amriki), a 16-year-old American; Lucas Glass (aka Abu Ibrahim al-Almani), a 31-year-old German; Bimuraev Begjan (aka Abu Sara), a 30-year-old Russian; Askar Zarmanbetov (aka Abu Dawoud Nougha), a 27-year-old Ukrainian; Sattibek Oshibaev (aka Abu Rouqaya), a 30-year-old citizen of Kazakhstan; Mohammad Dawlat (aka Abu Mohsab Tajiki), a 22-year-old citizen of Tajikistan; and two nationals of Uzbekistan: Adil Rahimov (aka Abu Amina Uzbeki), 58, and Farhad Qaderov (aka Bilal Uzbeki), 28.

The SDF are currently an estimated more than 1,000 imported muscle from over 30 different countries. Their fate is uncertain. Western nations are reluctant to repatriate their citizens, because of the potential security risk and problems gathering evidence to prosecute them of crimes.

The Kurdish administration in northern Syria has refused to prosecute the foreigners, as they are doing with local jihadists. They have also warned they will not be able to continue to hold their prisoners if Ottoman Turkish forces attack their territory.

Kazakhstan took back five of their nationals who had fought for ISIS, as well as 11 women and 30 children over the weekend.

The SDF are battling ISIS in the Hajin area of the Euphrates River valley. This is the last significant pocket of territory held by the group that once controlled large swathes of territory across Syria and Iraq.
