Seven Killed in Mozambique Jihadist Attack Claimed by IS
[AnNahar] Seven people including a policeman were killed in northern Mozambique this week in a jihadist attack claimed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, local sources said Saturday.

The attack on Wednesday evening occurred in Lidjungo village in the Nangade district, a local source based in Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province told AFP.

One policeman and six non-combatants were killed in the attack, including two children.

Islamist fighters have targeted remote communities in the gas-rich, Moslem-majority Cabo Delgado province since October 2017, killing more than 250 people and forcing thousands from their homes despite a heavy police and military presence in the area that borders Tanzania.

According to SITE Intelligence, which monitors jihadist activity, Islamic State issued a statement late on Friday claiming involvement in the Wednesday attack.

This is its second IS claim for an attack in Mozambique, targeting the volatile northern region. The first was on June 3.

"The soldiers of the caliphate assaulted barracks of the crusader Mozambican army, in the Nangade area, in northern Mozambique, two days ago," said the statement, according to a SITE translation.

The group claimed to have clashed with the military "killing and wounding a number of them and forcing the remainder to flee".

It said fighters seized weapons and ammunition.

The group first claimed involvement in northern Mozambique last month, saying it carried out an attack that took place in Metubi village, about 150 kilometres east of Nangade.

The police and government have a policy of not commenting on any Death Eater activity, even if attacks are confirmed by local residents.

The identity of the bully boy Islamists staging attacks in northern Mozambique remains unclear and the motives unknown.

Analysts have expressed doubts over claims by the Islamic State, suggesting that it is unlikely that the group would have direct contact with fighters in Mozambique.

Mexican Authorities Rescue 24 Kidnapped Migrants
[AnNahar] Mexican authorities on Friday rescued 24 Central American migrants colonists, including nine children, who had been held hostage for nearly three weeks in the crime-ridden state of Guanajuato, officials said.

The migrants colonists were held for 20 days in the town of Celaya, about 210 kilometres (130 miles) from Mexico City, said Secretary of State Security Juan Jose Gonzalez.

They told officials that their relatives had been making payments to their captors during that time, Gonzalez said.

The victims were receiving medical attention after their ordeal, he added.

Separately, the security ministry announced the arrest of 59 migrants colonists, including 55 Hondurans, around the northeastern town of Saltillo, near the US border.

Thousands of Central Americans attempt to cross Mexico in so-called "caravans" every year in the hope of reaching the United States to seek refuge from violence and poverty at home.

After US President Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
threatened Mexico with tariffs, Mexican leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador agreed last month to crack down on undocumented migration, deploying tens of thousands of National Guardsmen to tighten its borders.

Mexico deported 33 percent more foreigners month-on-month in June, officials said this week.

The migrants colonists are frequent targets for violent criminal gangs operating in Mexico, where more than 40,000 people have been officially reported missing.

Radioactive material worth $72m seized from car in Turkey

[Jpost] Anti-smuggling and organized crime police in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
have arrested five people after 18.1 grams (0.64oz) of the highly-radioactive element californium, were found hidden in a car.

The stash was discovered hidden under the gearshift, wrapped in a plastic bag, in a car stopped in the north-western province of Bolu, and police had to cut through the upholstery to retrieve it.

Police valued the material seized at $72million.

After seizure, the bag was sent to the Ottoman Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK).

Californium was first synthesized in 1950 at the University of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, by physics researchers and can be used to help start up nuclear reactors and used in nuclear weapons.

The US and Russia are the only known producers of californium, leading to questions about the origin and destination of the smuggled element. Turkey is an important smuggling route due to its proximity to Africa, Asia and Europe

#1  Holy smoke!!!!! Californium 252 is a real neutron emitter. 1 microgram emits 2.3 MILLION neutrons per second! In my nuclear physics class at UC Berkeley we went to the radiation lab and viewed 3 micrograms of Californium dissolved in hydrochloric acid. Th chamber was 8 ft below the ground and saw the beaker and remote controls behind a window with 10 feet of water. The labware was changed once a month because of neutron destruction. A lawn was over the 8 ft of soil and the neutrons killed the own. Smuggling this large amount in a car is suicide

#4  Hard to take this at face value.

It might have been that the Californium was part of a mixture of decay products and, say, chloride to make it into a salt.

Also, the official price of Californium 252 is about $27M per gram which, if the Californium were pure would be more like $400M.

Iraq
Iraqi officer discloses military info to CIA over WhatsApp - report
This seems very odd.
[Jpost] A senior commander in the Iraqi army disclosed information on military bases along the Iraq-Syria border to a CIA agent, according to audio files and WhatsApp chats released by the Iraqi Hezbollah terror group, the Iranian Fars news agency reported.

Mahmoud al-Falahi, the commander of operations in the al-Anbar province of Iraq, was asked by a CIA agent who is an Iraqi national to provide geographic coordinates of existing military bases along the border between Iraq and Syria "to be attacked by US and Israeli forces."

The CIA agent also instructed al-Falahi to meet with US army and intelligence service commanders in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan region or at the US forces' base in al-Habaniyeh" in Western Iraq, according to Fars.

The released conversations show that al-Falahi provided the detailed coordinates of military bases in al-Anbar as the CIA agent requested.

Iraqi Hezbollah used the audio files to show al-Falahi's "plot against the Iraqi army, security, Hashd al-Shaabi (the Popular Mobilization Forces) and resistance forces" and warned that the spying he had done for the CIA and Israeli Mossad had endangered Iran's national security.

Five soldiers injured in suspected West Bank car-ramming
[IsraelTimes] Five soldiers were maimed in a suspected car-ramming attack Saturday evening near the West Bank town of Hizma northeast of Jerusalem.
"Legume, I suspect that was a car ramming!"
"Inspector! How do you do it!"

Two of the victims were in moderate condition and three were lightly injured, according to the Magen David Adom emergency service.
"How do you feel, Moshe?"
"Moderate. How about you, Ari?"
"Moderate."
"I suppose it could be worse."

The driver expeditiously departed at a goodly pace and a manhunt was launched in the area, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.
"Moderately priced imported car, don't inshallah me now!"
The IDF said the troops had been in the area as part of an "operational mission," when they were struck by a car. It said the incident was under investigation.
"Legume! My saxophone!"
Police said earlier on Saturday that a vehicle tried to hit a police officer at checkpoint in the northern West Bank. No injuries were reported and the driver expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.
"Hm. I'm sensing a pattern here, Legume. I just can't quite put my finger on it!"
Fred getting silly is very silly, indeed. :-) Update from The Times of Israel at 8:30 a.m. EDT:
A driver suspected of ramming his vehicle into a group of Israeli soldiers in the West Bank Saturday night was caught after a brief manhunt, the IDF said Sunday morning.

The driver was arrested along with his father in the nearby Paleostinian town of Hizme, according to Paleostinian media reports.

The army said the pair were being questioned after the arrests, which took place after a search in the area of the attack and intelligence-gathering operations.

The IDF said in a statement that it is treating the incident as a terror attack. It said the driver, who was not identified, rammed his car into the soldiers after seeing them on the side of the road.

#1  Fred is the best editor ever ! Now even when I read my local papers, his Fredisms and autocorrects swim into my head at key sentences. I can't read news like I used to now. Besides, it helps my cynicism a lot. Life just seems... merrier. After Mad magazine and Mr. Show only Fred has made me laugh so much. If our subjects were not so grim...

#2  They should have a free-for-all, beat the driver dead and say he'd just about had it with the car and all. Crash broke every bone in his body. Deep six 'em both.

Oh my goodness, yes. It’s like reading the Iliad, with rosy-fingered Dawn and cow-eyed Hera, only ever so much better. Even in conversation, I’ll suddenly have to fight off a fit of the giggles when one of us says something and the rest of the phrase simply mustn’t be said aloud...

US calls for German ground troops in Syria
[DW] A top US diplomat has formally asked Germany to send troops to Syria to help fight the terrorist militia Islamic State. James Jeffrey said allies needed to provide technical support for the Kurdish-led opposition.

US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey has called on Germany to send military trainers, logistics specialists and technicians to help the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

"We want ground troops from Germany to partially replace our soldiers," Jeffrey said in an interview with the German dpa news agency and the weekly Welt am Sonntag newspaper, before adding that he expected an answer from the German government this month.

Jeffrey was in Berlin on Friday on a mission to draw pledges of military and financial support from the German government. "We are looking for volunteers who want to take part here and among other coalition partners," Jeffrey told the German news outlets, though he added that he had not asked for a specific number of soldiers.

He also said that troops would not necessarily be required to engage directly in fighting with the jihadi group.

#1  Considering there are "German citizens" (read: Syrians with German passports) fighting for ISIS in Syria, this only seems fair.

#2  unfortunately the current readiness of the German military is questionable even in the mostly non combat areas that were identified

Russian-led assault in Syria leaves over 500 civilians dead
[Jpost] At least 544 civilians have been killed and over 2,000 people injured since a Russian-led assault on the last rebel bastion in northwestern Syria began two months ago, rights groups and rescuers said on Saturday.
Thanks, Obama
Russian jets joined the Syrian army on April 26 in the biggest offensive against parts of rebel-held Idlib province and adjoining northern Hama provinces in the biggest escalation in the war between Syrian President Bashar al Assad and his enemies since last summer.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights,(SNHR), which monitors casualties and briefs various UN agencies, said the 544 civilians killed in the hundreds of attacks carried out by Russian jets and the Syrian army include 130 children. Another 2,117 people have been injured.

"The Russian military and its Syrian ally are deliberately targeting civilians with a record number of medical facilities bombed," Fadel Abdul Ghany, chairman of SNHR, told Rooters.

Russia and its Syrian army ally deny their jets hit indiscriminately civilian areas with cluster munitions and incendiary weapons, which residents in opposition areas say are meant to paralyze every-day life.

Moscow says its forces and the Syrian army are fending off terror attacks by al Qaeda Lions of Islam whom they say hit populated, government-held areas, and it accuses rebels of wrecking a ceasefire deal agreed last year between The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
and Russia.

Last month U.S.-based Human Rights Watch said the Russian-Syrian joint military operation had used cluster munitions and incendiary weapons in the attacks along with large air-dropped explosive weapons with wide-area effects in populated civilian areas, based on reports by first responders and witnesses.

Residents and rescuers say the two-month-old campaign has left dozens of villages and towns in ruins. According to the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
, at least 300,000 people have been forced to leave their homes for the safety of areas closer to the border with Turkey.

"Whole villages and towns have been emptied," said Idlib-based Civil Defence front man Ahmad al Sheikho, saying it was the most destructive campaign against Idlib province since it completely fell to the opposition in the middle of 2015.

On Friday, 15 people, including children, were killed in the village of Mhambil in western Idlib province after Syrian army helicopters dropped barrel bombs on a civilian quarter, the civil defense group and witnesses said.

The heads of 11 major global humanitarian organizations warned at the end of last month that Idlib stood at the brink of disaster, with 3 million civilian lives at risk, including 1 million children.

"Too many have died already" and "even wars have laws" they declared, in the face of multiple attacks by government forces and their allies on hospitals, schools and markets," the U.N.-endorsed statement said.

Last Thursday an aerial strike on Kafr Nabl hospital made it the 30th facility to be bombed during the campaign, leaving hundreds of thousands with no medical access, according to aid groups.

"To have these medical facilities bombed and put out of service in less than two months is no accident. Let's call this by what it is, a war crime," Dr. Khaula Sawah, vice president of the U.S.-based Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations, which provides aid in the northwest, said in a statement.
