'Hasn't Been a Good Year' for Afghan Women: HRW
[Tolo] What would we do without HRW "experts"? I'm sure it's Trump's fault
The Human Rights Watch cited 2021 as an unfortunate year for women "mostly because of Afghanistan".

The associate director of the women’s rights division at Human Rights Watch, Heather Barr, said that the "Taliban" rolled back Afghan women's access to their rights.

"So, it is the end of the year, and we are looking back on what kind of the year 2021 has been for women’s rights around the world, and unfortunately, it hasn’t been a good year, I mean that is mostly because of Afghanistan," she told TOLOnews on Tuesday. "I think that what we saw after August fifteenth, is that as the Taliban rolled backed the right to education, the right to employment, the right to access health care, freedom of movement, freedom of speech, freedom of association and the right to live free from violence for women and girls across Afghanistan."

A prominent Afghan women rights activist, Mahbouba Seraj, voiced concerns over the current status of Afghan women.

"When the right of education is taken from girls and women, and they are incapable of doing their activities, and all kind of access is restricted for women, this is the worst situation for women in the country," she said.

According to her, the main reason for the current crisis in the country is due to women’s isolation from society, including governmental affairs. "I remained here (Afghanistan) to be the voice of women and to warn that no government can survive," Seraj said.

Barr also referred to the international community and said that it "didn’t do much" to protect Afghan women.

"I think that really illustrates for women around the world, how fragile our rights are and how easily they can be rolled back and how little resistance we’ll see from the governments," she said.

"The silence of the international community is one of the reasons that women are faced with the worst situations," said Madina Darwazi, a women rights activist.

But the Islamic Emirate said that it has been committed to women’s rights based on Islamic values.

"Many women are still working in several organizations and girls also going to schools in some provinces. We are committed to ensuring the rights of all citizens," said Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate.

This comes as the Islamic Emirate has been facing criticism inside and outside Afghanistan for imposing restrictions on women.

Kabul Municipality Forbids Images of Women on Advertising
[Tolo] The owners of beauty salons in Kabul criticized the decision of the Islamic Emirate, and asked the government to not impose restrictions on their business.

The Kabul municipality in a new effort has taken steps to remove the photos of women on storefronts in Kabul city.

The spokesman of Kabul municipality, Nematullah Barakzai, said the government has ordered the municipality’s officials to remove all photos of women on the signboards of shops and business centers in Kabul.

"Based on the decision of the government, the photos that are against Islamic regulations will be collected or removed from billboards," said Barakzai.

Meanwhile, the owners of beauty salons in Kabul criticized the decision of the Islamic Emirate, and asked the government to not impose restrictions on their business.

Shayesta Saifi, a makeup artist, has worked in a beauty salon for seven years. Shayesta said she is financially assisting her 10-member family. "This is imposing a restriction on women’s work, there is a fear that they will lock our shop in the next days," she told TOLOnews.

"What does it benefit the government to remove photos of women?" said Parwana, a women’s rights activist.

This comes as international organizations have repeatedly called on the Islamic Emirate to not ignore the rights of women and to not marginalize women from society, but the Islamic Emirate government claims that it already respects women based on Islamic principles.

When you buy the "big guy": Taliban welcomes China to mine in Afghanistan: Chinese State Media
[JustTheNews] Chinese state media says the Taliban is pushing for China to mine in Afghanistan, but claims efforts are stalled because the United States is "aggravating the economic collapse."

The Taliban is pushing China to mine in Afghanistan, according to The Global Times, a Chinese state-controlled media outlet.

Afghanistan is home to an estimated $1 trillion to $3 trillion worth of rare earth metals. China is home to about two-thirds of rare earths, and the communist country already provides more than 85% of rare metals and minerals globally, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The Global Times touted the most recent development in an article Thursday titled "Chinese firm's copper mine project in Afghanistan hasn't started, despite Taliban's push."

Work on the copper mine has been reportedly stalled for years due to issues surrounding Afghanistan's security.

Taliban officials are hoping that work will resume quickly on the mine, which is expected to be the second-largest copper mine in the world.

The Global Times blamed the United States for the "severe challenges" facing the jihadist-controlled nation.

Libya Candidates Say Election Delay is Inevitable

But it has been beset by deep divisions over its legal basis, who may stand and court challenges against prominent candidates.

On Monday, 17 hopefuls issued a joint statement in which they implicitly acknowledged that a delay was inevitable.

The group urged the electoral commission to "reveal the reasons why there will be no election on the date set", and called on it to "publish a final list of candidates".

Multiple observers have predicted a delay, but just days ahead of the vote, there has been no official announcement.

Libya, torn apart by a decade of conflict since its 2011 revolution, has seen a year of relative calm since a landmark October 2020 ceasefire, and the UN has been pushing for elections as part of a multi-pronged peace effort.

US ‘disappointed’ as Egypt jails key revolution figure Abdel Fattah for 5 years
Responding to this story from yesterday.
[IsraelTimes] Blogger, his lawyer and fellow blogger Mohammed ’Oxygen’ Ibrahim all sent to prison; Washington says freedom of expression should be secure without fear of criminal penalties.

Egypt on Monday sentenced Alaa Abdel Fattah, a leading figure in the 2011 revolution, to five years in jail, with two others receiving four years, his sister and a judicial source said.

A computer programmer, blogger and high-profile activist who mobilized youths in the uprising that unseated autocrat Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
, Abdel Fattah had been in pre-trial detention since September 2019.

Abdel Fattah, his lawyer Mohammed al-Baqer and blogger Mohammed "Oxygen" Ibrahim were convicted of "broadcasting false news" in their trial in Cairo.

Washington, which has already frozen 10 percent of its aid to Egypt over repeated rights violations, said it was "disappointed" by the sentence.

"Journalists, human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
defenders, and others seeking to peacefully exercise their freedom of expression should be able to do so without facing criminal penalties, intimidation, harassment, or any other form of reprisal," said US State Department front man Ned Price.

The Committee to Protect Journalists decried Monday’s ruling as "unacceptable."

The verdict "demonstrates the lengths to which authorities are willing to go to punish these journalists for their work," said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa Coordinator.

CPJ considers bloggers as engaging in journalism.

"Both journalists have already spent several years in prison on bogus charges, and authorities must release them immediately and unconditionally," Mansour added.

BEHIND BARS AGAIN
Pre-trial detention can last two years under Egyptian law, but in practice, detainees are often kept waiting behind bars longer.

Abdel Fattah was arrested in the wake of rare night-time protests prompted by an exiled construction contractor calling for the removal of Sissi on claims of corruption.

Baqer and Ibrahim were also detained in a massive crackdown.

Abdel Fattah has spent most of the past decade in jail at Tora, one of the country’s most notorious prisons, after previous convictions.

His mother, mathematics professor Laila Soueif, wrote in a New York Times

... which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

opinion piece published on Saturday that "the outside world, once so inspired by the Egyptian revolutionaries, is looking away.

"His crime is that, like millions of young people in Egypt and far beyond, he believed another world was possible. And he dared to try to make it happen."

Prolific writer Abdel Fattah’s critically acclaimed essay collection "You Have Not Yet Been Defeated" was published in October.

"At its fundamental core, his writing is attached to justice," Soueif told AFP in October when the book was released.

Rights groups say Egypt is holding some 60,000 political prisoners, many facing brutal conditions and overcrowded cells.

In a 2019 interview with the show 60 Minutes on US broadcaster CBS, Sissi said there were no political prisoners in Egypt.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Study accuses EU of failing to push PA on terror stipends, incitement
[IsraelTimes] B’nai Brith report says Brussels should place conditions on aid to Paleostinians after years of ignoring hate speech in textbooks and payouts to assailants and families.

The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
has not done enough to ensure that its funding to the Paleostinian Authority does not support incitement to violence and human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
violations, a study published on Tuesday argued.

"Despite existing anti-terrorism regulations, the EU has not addressed funding by the Paleostinian Authority to families of convicted holy warriors as well as the persistent issue of incitement to hatred and widespread antisemitism in Paleostinian textbooks," wrote researchers Tommaso Virgili and Paul Stott, who previously authored a report on hidden Moslem Brüderbund networks in Europe.

The study was commissioned by B’nai Brith International, a Jewish non-profit that also advocates on behalf of Israel in the United States and abroad.

Bennett offers Israeli assistance to Kentucky amid devastating tornadoes

The report slammed the EU for failing to ensure accountability in the Paleostinian Authority education system. Paleostinian textbooks have long been assailed by critics as containing hate speech and incitement, including by a 2021 EU study.

Brussels is the PA’s largest single donor and helps pay the salaries of many of its civil servants, including those who design PA curricula. It is also the second-largest donor to the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
Works and Reliefs Agency — which supports Paleostinian refugees — sending over $157 million in aid in 2021.

"For many years, the EU has been criticized for failing to align its practice with principles with regard to the Paleostinian Authority and Paleostinian nonprofits," B’nai Brith director Alan Schneider said during a webinar inaugurating the report.

The report also charged that the EU does not uphold its own values when it continues to fund the PA, given the PA’s practice of paying stipends to the families of those imprisoned or killed by Israeli forces. Critics call the practice "pay for slay," as the funds can also go to Paleostinians convicted of brutal acts of terror.

The EU for too long "turned a blind eye towards the practice of payments to the families of convicted terrorists, praised as deaders," said European parliamentarian David Lega during the report’s launch.

The researchers argued that Brussels should impose conditions on its aid to the PA and consider adopting legislation that bans aid as long as Ramallah continues paying out stipends to Paleostinian security prisoners and their families.

While Israeli officials have consistently condemned the prisoner stipends and alleged incitement in textbooks, the government has also sought to bolster the PA, seen as more moderate than its Islamist Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede, rivals, including by increasing international aid to its rapidly draining coffers.

As recently as November, Israel lobbied international donors in Oslo — including the European Union — to step up support for the Paleostinian Authority.

The report elided any mention of Ramallah’s policy of security coordination with Israel, in which Paleostinian Authority forces work with Israeli intelligence to crack down on Hamas and Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. Ex-Intel Chief Confirms Israel's Role in Soleimani Killing
[An Nahar] Israel's former military intelligence chief says Israel was involved in the American Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani
in January 2020. It is the first public acknowledgement of Israel's role in the operationSoleimani headed the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's elite Quds Force and helped orchestrate Iran's involvement with paramilitary groups abroad. He was killed in a U.S. dronezap at the Baghdad airport in January 2020, an incident that threatened to pull the countries into full-blown conflict.

A week after the airstrike, NBC News reported that Israeli intelligence helped confirm the details of Soleimani's flight from Damascus to Baghdad. Earlier this year, Yahoo News reported that Israel "had access to Soleimani's numbers" and gave that intelligence to the United States.

But Maj. Gen. Tamir Heyman, the now-retired general who headed military intelligence until October, appears to be the first official to confirm Israel's involvement.

Heyman's comments were published in the November issue of a Hebrew-language magazine closely affiliated with Israel's intelligence services. The interview was held in late September, a couple weeks before his retirement from the military. The authors wrote that Heyman opened the interview by talking about the American airstrike that killed Soleimani, but in which Israeli intelligence played a part.

"Assassinating Soleimani was an an achievement, since our main enemy, in my eyes, are the Iranians," Heyman told the magazine. He said there were "two significant and important liquidations during my term" as head of army intelligence.

Responding to a news hound’s question about possible political interference in the Council’s work, Meshleb said: "No one has asked us to take a certain decision."

Meshleb also denied the presence of a "sectarian" rift in the Council, while noting that the no-ruling means that elections in the 16th district, dedicated to expats, will be postponed to 2026.

against the electoral law’s amendments."The (Council’s) members maintained their stance," Adwan added, noting that "the constitutional and legal right of non-residents to vote for 128 seats has triumphed."

"The attempted deal will remain in the minds of non-residents, who will hold accountable the domineering system that displaced them from their homeland and kept trying to exclude them until the last moment," the MP went on to say.

MP Imad Wakim, also of the LF bloc, for his part tweeted that "the will of Lebanese expats to take part in parliamentary elections in their (electoral) districts has triumphed."

They "will not be isolated from their homeland and they will hold you accountable," he added.

Former deputy PM Ghassan Hasbani also tweeted that "the Constitutional Council remained safe from political deals."

"The right of expats to vote from their places of residence has been consolidated. This is an additional positive step towards the parliamentary elections," he added.

A major political deal among several parties had been reached on Monday, but it failed to materialize due to the rejection of some parties, most notably Prime Minister Najib Miqati, media reports said.

According to reports, the deal had called for the Constitutional Council to accept the FPM’s appeal in return for preventing Judge Tarek Bitar from questioning ex-ministers, securing the resumption of Cabinet sessions and replacing the head of the Higher Judicial Council, the state prosecutor, the financial prosecutor and the head of judicial inspection.

Bassil Slams 'Shiite Duo', Decries 'New Four-Party Alliance'
[An Nahar] Free Patriotic Movement
Despite its name a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, neither free nor particularly patriotic...
chief Jebran Bassil on Tuesday lashed out at Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
and the Amal Movement over the Constitutional Council’s failure to issue a ruling on an appeal filed by the FPM against the electoral law’s amendments."The Constitutional Council has did away with himself," Bassil said in a televised address.

"The Council was toppled and paralyzed today," he lamented, describing what happened as "a sign of the disintegration of the state."

"What happened undermines the National Pact and the President's jurisdiction as to Article 57, and it is an additional fall of the constitution which we are trying to preserve," Bassil said.

He added that what happened took place based on a "clear political decision by a system that is allied with each other during President Aoun’s term."

"It was led today by the Shiite duo in the Constitutional Council, which will have political consequences," Bassil went on to say.

Lamenting that the Constitutional Council "decided to remain silent over a host of issues, including the manipulation of deadlines and the addition of articles to a legislative text related to the powers of the justice and foreign ministers without a discussion nor a vote," Bassil decried the no-ruling as the result of a "new four-party alliance" in the face of the FPM.

He was referring to the 2005 parliamentary elections, when the FPM’s lists competed in some districts against candidates backed by Hizbullah, the Amal Movement, the Lebanese Forces
A Christian political party founded by Bashir Gemayel, who was then bumped off when he was elected president of Leb...
and the Progressive Socialist Party.

Bassil also revealed that he received a phone call and a proposal prior to the Constitutional Council’s decision.

"We were asked to accept voting in parliament in favor of the (formation of the) Higher Council (for the Trial of Presidents and Ministers), in return for the Constitutional Council accepting our appeal. I told them that they already know the answer and to stop these ploys. The bargain proposal was not accepted two months ago and it will not be accepted today," the FPM chief added.

"We are seeking a solution, not a bargain, and we tell the Shiite duo that there is no justification for the failure to hold Cabinet sessions. I also tell this to the premier, because it doesn’t seem that he is in a hurry regarding this," Bassil said.
