Egypt Sentences 3 Brotherhood Members to Death, 20 to Life in Prison

An Egyptian court on Tuesday sentenced three of the banned Muslim Brotherhood members to death, 20 others to life in prison and one to nine years in jail in 18 different cases.

According to the indictment, the convicts attempted to assassinate a former criminal court judge in Fayoum and police officers.

In 2014, the Public Prosecution filed terror charges against Muslim Brotherhood leaders who operated the group’s secret apparatus, the Committee of Qualitative Operations, and assigned it to carry out assassinations and hostilities against public figures, army soldiers, employees in the Ministry of Interior and the judiciary who violated its orders.

The court’s presiding judge, Yasser Muharram Darweesh, said the defendants had planned to assassinate a criminal court judge in Fayoum, Tareq Abouzeid, while he was driving, but they mistakenly shot at a different vehicle.

They also killed two policemen in Fayoum and planted roadside bombs across much of the province, opened fire at a local police station and carried out surveillance of police officers they intended to assassinate.

The members of these terrorist cells shared tasks that included execution, surveillance and security when they carried out acts of sabotage and violence.

They also shared the tasks of preparing firearms, explosive devices and firebombs to use them in terrorist attacks.

In this context, the Court of Cassation upheld Tuesday prison sentences ranging between three and 15 years against 52 Brotherhood members after rejecting the appeals filed by their advocates. It also acquitted five others.

The convicts are accused of committing violent crimes, carrying out arson attacks, and vandalism on assaultings policemen and citizens, as well as attempted murder during the sit-ins at al-Adwa area in Minya Governorate after ousting former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The issued verdicts are final and cannot be appealed.

Britain
Movie theater chain halts UK screenings of film about Prophet Muhammad’s daughter
[IsraelTimes] Protesters rally outside Bolton and Birmingham locations of Cineworld after its June 3 showing prompts safety concerns, harsh criticism from Islamic organizations

Cineworld, a British movie theater chain headed by an Israeli, has pulled a controversial film about the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad from all of its locations after protests took place outside of theaters, a Wednesday report said.

The chain said the decision was "to ensure the safety of our staff and customers," according to the BBC.

More than 120,000 people have signed a petition for the film, "The Lady of Heaven," to be pulled from UK cinemas. Protests of up to 200 people were reported at the Bolton and Birmingham theater locations of Cineworld on Sunday.

The chain is headed by Israeli CEO Mooky Greidinger, who, along with his brother, Israel, owns 29 percent of the company.

The Bolton Council of Mosques in particular spoke out against the film, calling it "blasphemous" and saying it "misrepresents orthodox historical narratives and disrespects the most esteemed individuals of Islamic history," according to the report.

The film’s executive producer, Malik Shlibak, said he welcomed people expressing their views but said cinemas should "stand up and defend their right to show films that people want to see."

"I think cinemas are crumbling to the pressure, and taking these decisions to quell the noise," Shlibak told The Guardian.

The film, which premiered in the UK on June 3, tells the story of Lady Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Some critics argue that the very mention of the prophet is an insult to Islam.
"everything is an insult to Islam, even Mohamhead"
The film’s website explains that holy figures were not represented by actors, but were rather portrayed as special effects and lighting techniques, as the representation of sacred figures is taboo in Islam.
"They were portrayed as explosions"
However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
the film has racked up heavy criticism in light of its plot and portrayals of sacred figures, particularly of Fatima and Aisha, Muhammad’s wife.

The UK-based Islamic media organization 5Pillars said the film was "two hours plus of the most extreme Shia sectarian narratives."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Assailants attack off-duty cops in East Jerusalem, gun briefly stolen
[IsraelTimes] Police open fire in Issawiya to scare away attackers, who remain on the lam, though firearm later found; one officer lightly injured

Police were deployed across the Paleostinian East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya late Wednesday and early Thursday after two off-duty officers were attacked there and one had a gun briefly stolen.

Officers opened fire in the crowded residential neighborhood to fend off the assault, during which one police officer suffered light injuries. The suspects remained on the loose as of 2 a.m. Thursday, though the stolen firearm was recovered.

The two cops were in an unmarked car with another passenger near the entrance of Issawiya at approximately 11:15 p.m. when they were attacked with "severe violence," police said.

Assailants threw stones at the car and shot pepper spray at the cops and the other passenger while chasing them into the adjacent French Hill neighborhood.

"The police who feared for their lives had gun sex in an attempt to clear away the attackers, who then expeditiously departed at a goodly pace," a police statement said.

The officer who required treatment was injured by both pepper spray and rocks thrown at him, according to police.

The car they were driving in suffered heavy damage. Video from the scene showed all the windows of the car smashed and a large cinderblock resting on the windshield.

A large number of police were deployed following the incident to locate the attackers and recover the gun, which they eventually found. Among those at the scene was Jerusalem police chief Doron Turgeman.

The incident occurred hours after a Paleostinian man drove off with a soldier’s rifle after a traffic stop in the southern West Bank earlier in the day.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect grabbed the weapon, as alleged by the army, or if it got stuck in the car door, as security footage appeared to show.

"During the questioning, the driver was asked to identify himself. The driver of the vehicle grabbed the M16 weapon of one of the officers and began driving while dragging the officer until the weapon detached from his body," police said in a statement.

Two security camera videos of the incident appeared to show one of the officers removing the rifle with a shoulder strap from his body, and thrusting the weapon into the window of the car, before the driver took off.

According to Hebrew-language media reports, the man turned himself in to the Paleostinian Authority security forces, with the weapon, which will be returned to Israel.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Israeli tanks said to destroy Syrian army outpost built in Golan demilitarized zone
[IsraelTimes] IDF reportedly drops pamphlets warning Syria’s military against operating in off-limits area between the two countries

Israeli tanks shelled an observation post set up by the Syrian military in a demilitarized part of the Golan Heights early Wednesday morning, Syrian reports said.

According to several local Syrian sources, the outpost near the village of al-Malgah in the Quneitra region was destroyed in the attack.

The Israel Defense Forces refused to comment, in line with its policy of not officially acknowledging specific strikes in Syria, save for those that are in retaliation for attacks against Israel.

Following the strike, Israeli aircraft dropped flyers near the border warning Syrian soldiers against operating in the demilitarized zone between the two countries, Syria’s pro-opposition Houran Radio reported.

The flyers, which were written in Arabic and addressed to the "commanders of the Syrian [Arab] Army," matched the style of similar leaflets that have been dropped in Syria in the past and included the silhouette of an eagle — the symbol of the IDF’s 210th Bashan Division, which is tasked with defending Israel’s frontier with Syria and the Golan Heights.

"As we warned you previously, we will not tolerate any presence of the Syrian army as long as it continues to violate the disengagement agreement, by being in a demilitarized zone," the flyer read.

The flyer also included images of Syrian soldiers allegedly seen operating in the demilitarized zone.

According to another pro-opposition Syrian source in the Golan Heights, the location was used by Iranian or Iran-backed forces. The claim could not be independently verified, but Israel has repeatedly accused the Syrian military of actively assisting the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group in the area.

The IDF has warned the Syrian military against this, both through flyers dropped along the border and through overt public appeals, in some cases naming the Syrian and Hezbollah officials involved, including officers from Syria’s 90th Brigade and 1st Division.

Israel fears Iranian entrenchment on its northern frontier, and it has repeatedly struck Iran-linked facilities and weapons convoys destined for Hezbollah.

The demilitarized zone, which is about seven kilometers (3.5 miles) at its widest and 200 meters (yards) at its narrowest, was created after the 1973 Yom Kippur War, in which Syria tried to retake the strategic plateau.

The Golan Heights was captured by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Six Day War.

Turkish Artillery Shells Villages In Aleppo

Turkish forces and their affiliated armed factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), targeted on Wednesday Shahba region in Aleppo northern countryside where Afrin IDPs have been taking shelter since 2018.

The Turkish forces and the SNA factions shelled the vicinity of the village of Umm Hawsh in lands planted with wheat.

Since the Turkish “Olive Branch” operation in 2018, through which Turkey occupied Afrin region, the inhabitants fled their homes and resorted to Shahba region (Aleppo northern countryside) which includes about 40 villages and five camps and is controlled by Syrian government and Russian forces.

The villages of the northern countryside of Aleppo are witnessing a Turkish military escalation, as they are bombed almost daily, coinciding with the start of the harvesting season.

On Tuesday evening, the Turkish forces fired two shells at the village of Ibbin in the south of Afrin, wounding a woman in her forearm.

The shelling also caused material damage to the house of two other civilians in the village.

The Turkish military escalation in the northern countryside of Aleppo coincides with recent statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, threatening to launch a military operation on north Syria particularly Tel Rifaat and Manbij.

On June 1, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan renewed his threats of launching a military operation on northern Syria, and specified his targets in the two Syrian cities of Manbij and Tel Rifaat, which include many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

On May 23, Erdogan announced taking steps to complete the so-called remained portions of the “safe zone” plan along Turkey’s southern border saying, “We will soon take new steps regarding the incomplete portions of the project we started on the 30 km deep safe zone we established along our southern border.”

The Turkish “safe zone” is an area of 30-35 km (19-22 miles) deep into Syrian territory that Turkey started establishing in 2019 to house Syrian refugees in an area along its border with Syria, as well as to keep it free from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which it regards as terrorists.
