Somalia, Ethiopia sign Intel sharing deal to tackle terror
[ShabelleMedia] The intelligence agencies of Æthiopia and Somalia have agreed to continue strengthening their joint efforts to prevent the spread of terrorism in the East African region.

According to the statement from National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), a delegation led by the Deputy Director General of NISS, Sisay Tola, traveled to Somalia with medical equipment and medicines supply sent by the Æthiopian government to reach the victims of the terrorist attack in Somalia on October 29, 2022.

Deputy DG Sisay Tola held a discussion on current and bilateral issues with the Director General of the Somali National Intelligence Agency, Mahad Mohammed.

During the discussion, DG Sisay expressed his condolences over the recent terrorist attack in Mogadishu, Somalia.

NISS’s statement indicates that to avoid the threat of such incidents, it is necessary to cement the partnerships and collaborations related to the fight against terrorism in East Africa.

Sisay announced that NISS will continue to strengthen its cooperation in capacity building and information exchange with its Somali counterpart in the prevention of terrorism.

General Mahad Mohammed thanked the Æthiopian government for the medical supply provided.

He also said that they have reached agreement with Æthiopia, which is a key partner to Somalia, to collaborate in the fight against the threat of terrorism that is spreading in East Africa.

Egypt welcomes peace deal between Ethiopian government and Tigray movement
[ALAHRAM] The Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu-Zeid welcomed on Thursday an agreement on cessation of hostilities inked between the Æthiopian government and Tigray movement after peace talks that lasted for ten days.

In a press statement, Abu-Zeid wished that the agreement would bring about permanent peace in Æthiopia and give the Æthiopian government and people an opportunity to remove the effect of disputes and to reconstruct social stability.

He asserted the importance of boosting peace, stability and security in Africa, especially in east Africa.

Abu-Zeid expressed Egypt’s thanks and appreciation to the High Representative of the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
(AU) for the Horn of Africa, to former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo, to the members of the AU High-level panel for the Æthiopian Peace process and to members of the AU group of wise men for the efforts they made to help the conflicting parties reach this agreement.

He also thanked the President of South Africa and the South African government for hosting the agreement’s talks.

On Wednesday, the Æthiopian government and Tigray movement announced that they had reached a truce, mediated by AU, following a round of talks in South Africa led by AU special envoy former president Obasanjo. This agreement comes after a two year civil war that caused a humanitarian crisis.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Derbent citizen's sentence for participation in IS upheld
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited
[KavkazUzel] The court of cassation did not satisfy the complaint of Movsum Mammadov, a resident of Derbent, sentenced to six years in prison for participation in a terrorist organization.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in December 2021, a military court sentenced a resident of Derbent, Movsum Mammadov, to six years in a penal colony, recognizing him as a member of the terrorist organization "Islamic State." Mammadov pleaded not guilty.

According to investigators, in February 2020 in St. Petersburg, Mammadov swore an oath to the leader of the Islamic State and participated in the activities of IS until his arrest on November 3, 2020 in Makhachkala. Also, Mamedov, knowing about the intention of his acquaintance to create an armed formation controlled by IS in Dagestan, persuaded another person to become a member of this formation, the investigators believe.

Russia's Supreme Court upheld Movsum Mamedov's sentence, Kavkaz.Realii reported on November 3.

In his appeal, Mammadov stated that the conclusions of the court of first instance did not correspond to the circumstances of the case, and there was no evidence of his guilt. In particular, according to him, the acquaintance even before communicating with him "expressed his readiness to join an illegal armed formation under the influence of his brother" and "shared the ideas of radical Islam" even before they met.

Mammadov also said that during the interrogations he was under pressure, and the verification of his statement about the use of unlawful measures of influence was carried out superficially, the newspaper writes.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court indicated that the investigator, after verification, refused to initiate a criminal case on Mammadov's application for pressure "due to the lack of corpus delicti."

"In the course of the check, explanations were received from the persons who participated in the detention and interrogation of the suspected (accused) Mammadov. The results of the check on Mammadov's report about the use of unlawful methods of influence against him received a proper assessment in the investigator's decision to refuse to initiate a criminal case.

In particular, during investigators, defense counsel […] who confirmed their participation in the interrogation of the suspect Mammadov, who did not report any pressure to them, in their presence there were no threats against the latter. Mammadov was not found when he was admitted to the temporary detention center on November 3, 2020. With such data, the statements in the complaint that the check was formal and superficial, cannot be considered justified," the document, published on the website of the court, says.

The decision to leave the verdict in force is motivated by the fact that "there are no grounds for mitigating the punishment," the judicial act says. According to the same document, the consideration of Mammadov's appeal took place on March 2, 2022 in the Military Court of Appeal, the sentence was upheld.

Amina Gerikhanova received refugee status
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] A native of Chechnya, Amina Gerikhanova, who was put on the wanted list by Russia as a participant in hostilities in Syria, received refugee status in Romania, the Vayfond human rights association reported today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 8, the Chechen human rights association "Vaifond" based in Sweden informed that the Romanian police did not allow Amina Gerikhanova to be at large after being released from custody.

On September 22, it became known that Gerikhanova complained about the threats of the Romanian police to extradite her to Russia, even contrary to the recommendations of the ECtHR.
The European Court of Human Rights, also known as the Strasbourg Court, is an international court of the Council of Europe which interprets the European Convention on Human Rights.
On October 16, representatives of the Chechen diaspora held a picket in Vienna in support of Gerikhanova, and on October 30, employees of the human rights organization Amnesty International also took part in a demonstration in support of Gerikhanova in the capital of Austria.

Amina Gerikhanova received refugee status, the Chechen human rights association Vayfond reported today in its Telegram channel. The organization expressed its gratitude to everyone who participated in helping Amina and went to rallies in support of her.

Amina Gerikhanova, 36, was detained along with her child on March 13 at the Romanian border while trying to leave Ukraine, where she lived after leaving Chechnya about five years ago. Gerikhanov was arrested, and her son was placed in an orphanage, from where he was later taken by a relative.

Interpol is looking for Gerikhanov at the request of Russia, where she is accused of participating in hostilities in Syria. Gerikhanov will not be able to leave Romania, as the authorities still want her extradited to Russia. During the consideration of Amina Gerikhanova's asylum request, the ECtHR extended interim measures, which reduces the risk of her extradition from Romania to Russia, Vayfond reported earlier.
Radio Free Europe reported in April:
Gerikhanova's relative, Amrudi Bakharchiev, told RFE/RL on April 19 that Gerikhanova is wanted in Russia for allegedly taking part in military operations with the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria, which the woman and her relatives have denied.

Turkey warns Finland, Sweden must 'take steps' before joining NATO
“Surrender more, guys — you didn’t surrender enough!”
[FRANCE24] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
will not formally approve Finland and Sweden's membership of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
until the two countries take the necessary "steps", Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...
told alliance chief Jens Stoltenberg Friday.

Ankara has accused the two Nordic nations of providing a safe haven for outlawed Kurdish holy warriors it deems "terrorists" and held back on ratifying their NATO membership despite an agreement in June.

"President Erdogan noted that the steps to be taken by Sweden and Finland would determine how fast the approval process... would go and when it would be concluded," the Ottoman Turkish presidency said.

Erdogan and Stoltenberg held a private meeting in Istanbul that was closed to the media.

Finland and Sweden dropped decades of military non-alignment and scrambled to become NATO members in May, after Russia invaded Ukraine.

But Erdogan threatened to block their bids and sought concessions, leading to a deal in June between Turkey, Finland and Sweden that included provisions on extraditions and sharing information.

New Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will visit Ankara on Tuesday to meet with Erdogan in a trip that Stockholm hopes will lead to Turkey's approval.

Motive Behind Attempted Assassination of Ex-Pakistani PM Khan
[KHAAMAPRESS] Former Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality disorders...
believed the current politicians — including Prime Minister Sharif, the interior minister and a military general — were behind the attack, some of his allies told media immediately after the shooting.

On Thursday, Khan sustained a bullet injury in his leg, after shots were fired at a rally in Gujranwala in an apparent liquidation attempt.

Rana Sanaullah claims Imran Khan didn't receive four bullets
[GEOTV] Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah Friday rejected PTI Chairman Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality disorders...
's claim of being injured by four bullets and deemed him the biggest "liar" a day after Khan was attacked during his long march in Wazirabad.

Reacting to Khan's address following the attack, the minister said that his "lie is telecast live" because he is the head of a party.

Speaking during Geo News' programme "Naya Pakistain", Sanaullah said: "He is saying that four bullets hit him. He is lying. He said that a man fired at him from the front. He is lying."

The minister has asked for an independent inquiry to be conducted into the incident, which, he claims, will expose Khan's lie.

"His [Imran Khan] lies cannot be estimated like measuring the depth of the sea."

Sanaullah suggested the formation of a Supreme Court bench — headed by Chief Justice of Pakistain (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial — to be tasked with investigating Khan's attack as well as the liquidation allegations.

Referring to the PTI chief's murder allegations against himself, Sanaullah asked Khan why he avoided the cases during his four-year term as prime minister.

The interior minister said that he would accept any punishment if the claims made by the PTI chief about two shooters trying to assassinate him during the long march in Wazirabad were true.

Baseless allegations against senior army officer absolutely unacceptable: Military tells Imran Khan
[GEOTV] Responding to PTI Chairman Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
's allegations that three people, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and a major of the Pakistain Army, were involved in plotting his liquidation, the country's military rejected the statement as "baseless."

According to a blurb by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the "baseless and irresponsible allegations by chairman PTI against the institution and particularly a senior army officer are absolutely unacceptable and uncalled for."

In the statement, the military's media wing said that the Pakistain army prides itself on being an extremely professional and well-disciplined organization with a robust and highly effective internal accountability system applicable across the board for unlawful acts, if any, committed by uniformed personnel.

"However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
if the honour, safety and prestige of its rank and file are being tarnished by vested interests through frivolous allegations, the institution will safeguard its officers and soldiers no matter what."

It added that the "baseless allegations hurled at the institution/officials today [by Imran Khan] are highly regrettable and strongly condemned. No one will be allowed to defame the institution or its soldiers with impunity.

"Keeping this in view, the government of Pakistain has been requested to investigate the matter and initiate legal action against those responsible for defamation and false accusations against the institution and its officials without any evidence whatsoever," the statement added.

In a televised address from the hospital, Khan maintained that he had already learned about the looming danger and had received information that there was a plan in place to kill him "somewhere between Wazirabad and Gujrat".

"Three people — including Rana Sanaullah, Shehbaz Sharif, and a major in the army — made a plan to assassinate me after they saw that the number of people in my long march was exponentially increasing," Khan asserted.

He also urged his followers and party members to continue staging a protest against the aforementioned individuals.

"Continue your protest against these three individuals until they step down from their posts," Khan said.

Iraq
Two Yezidi women rescued from ISIS: KRG’s Yezidi Rescue Office
[Shafaq News] On Wednesday, the Office of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) dedicated to the rescue of the Yezidi group announced that two Yezidis were rescued from ISIS.

Khairi Bouzani, the Office’s head, said the Yazidis sisters from solag, east of Sinjar district, were rescued from the terrorist organization inside Syria.

The Yazidis have inhabited the mountains of northwestern Iraq for centuries, and the region is home to their holy places, shrines, and ancestral villages. The Yazidis are also concentrated north of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and in the Kurdish-controlled governorate of Dohuk.

They have suffered since ISIS stormed Sinjar in 2014. ISIS slaughtered over 3,000 Yazidis, enslaved 7,000 women and girls, and displaced most of its 550,000-strong community.

#8  What is Israel doing with far right parties?

Don’t be parochial, Spike the Hairy6811. Every country has its own spectrum. Spin, Strangeness, and Charm defines Israeli politics as follows (scroll down past Tim Poole talking about Democrats panicking to part (b) of the post):

And by the way, a clarification for American readers: “hard right” here does not mean the same thing as in the US. Economically both UTJ and “Religious Zionism” are left-wing, statist parties who want to bankroll their constituencies with “the forgotten man”s money. The two chief axes on our political spectrum run from dovish/internationalist to hawkish/nationalist on one side, and on the other side reflect the attitude to synagogue-state relations. It is quite possible to be an economic and cultural conservative (like myself) and be in the center zone on both the said axes…

In a related matter, too many — though not longtime Rantburgers — believe the politicized lie that Nazis are on the far right of the political spectrum. It first must remembered that the spectrum in Europe runs from the remaining stalwart royalists on the far right to Communists on the far left. Or rather, international socialists — at the time the Nazis were ascendant that meant Marxist-Leninist-Stalinists obedient to Moscow. The National Socialists (National Socialist German Workers' Party in full) went hard for national government control of the economy vs the international socialists’ government ownership of the economy, but functionally that just meant that the original owners got to remain as figureheads instead of being put up agains the nearest wall and shot. At the time everyone understood the Nazis, and fascists in general, to be Third Way Socialists — all the modernizing, “scientific” benefits of socialism without the icky surrender to those murderous Russians.

It was Stalin, that vicious creature of the Russian branch of the European far left, who defined Nazism/fascism as far right — because from where he stood they were to his right.

Modern neo-Nazis, as far as I can tell, also lean socialist economically, while drooling idiotically over racial nonsense, because they love the idea that they needn’t do anything to be superior except be born to the right parents.

‘It’s all the same’: As Israel’s far-right surges in election, Palestinians shrug
[IsraelTimes] Amid apathy in West Bank, and anger at Lapid for continuing some of Netanyahu’s policies, some activist muppets find reason for optimism: ’It will lead to some international pressure’

The apparent comeback of former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the dramatic rise of his far-right and ultra-Orthodox allies in this week’s general election have prompted little more than shrugs from many Paleostinians.

"It’s all the same to me," Said Issawiy, a vendor hawking nectarines in the main al-Manara Square of Ramallah, said of Netanyahu replacing centrist Yair Lapid and being poised to head the most right-wing government in Israel’s history.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hezbollah, Iranian oil smuggling network hit with sanctions
[Rudaw] The U.S. on Thursday imposed sanctions on a group of individuals, firms and vessels connected to an oil smuggling outfit said to benefit the Lebanese bully boy group Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

More than a dozen companies, six individuals and 11 vessels flagged from around the world — from Djibouti to Panama — are included in the sanctions package, for allegedly participating in a scheme that included blending and exporting sanctioned Iranian oil.

Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said Viktor Artemov, Edman Nafrieh, Rouzbeh Zahedi, Mohammed El Zein and others used dozens of companies to conduct illicit activities.

The move comes after the State Department in September designated two Chinese companies, and Treasury penalized a network of companies based in Hong Kong, Iran, India and the United Arab Emirates for playing a critical role in shipping sanctioned Iranian oil.

The sanctions deny parties access to any property or financial assets held in the U.S.

"The individuals running this illicit network use a web of shell companies and fraudulent tactics including document falsification to obfuscate the origins of Iranian oil, sell it on the international market and evade sanctions," said Brain Nelson, Treasury’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.

Nelson said vendors and buyers "should be vigilant" about Hezbollah and the Iranian regime’s attempts to generate revenue from oil smuggling.

The U.S. has ramped up sanctions against Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
and individuals and firms that do business with the country — especially after the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in the custody of Iran’s morality police.

She was detained because she didn’t properly cover her hair with the mandatory Islamic headscarf, known as the hijab. Amini collapsed at a cop shoppe and died three days later.

Her death set off protests in dozens of cities across the country, and the government responded with a fierce crackdown, blaming the protests on foreign interference.
