Afghanistan
Resistance Against the Taliban (IEA) Continues in Afghanistan
[KhaamaPress] The recent gender-based decrees issued by the Supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan restricting women from working for NGOs and getting university and higher education, culminated the tensions among the Afghan people.

The implementation of the ban completely erased Afghan women and girls from society, which prompted severe condemnations from the international community and the people of Afghanistan. Although some foreign governments, aid organizations, and other stakeholders called the de facto authorities to reverse the decision, nothing has changed so far.

On the contrary, these gender apartheid policies fueled the fire of hatred and resistance against the country’s ruling regime. The notion of embracing everyone to form an inclusive government where people could see them represented in the government has long died. Discrimination against women, religious minorities, and ethnicities has been witnessed since the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
’s return to power. The IEA authorities have been accused of monopolizing the power while giving no chance to others participating in the Islamic regime.

The integration of all these issues causes people to resist the Taliban administration on different fronts, be it through social movements (protests), military resistance, or opposing the group through spreading anti-regime propaganda.

Recently, reports about intensive fighting between the Taliban and the forces of the National Resistance® Front (NRF) in the last week of December surfaced online. The NRF is one of the only groups militarily resisting the Taliban administration. Concentrated in the Andarab, the NRF forces repelled both ground and air attacks from the Taliban with both sides facing heavy casualties.

The group headed by Ahmad Massoud, the late Ahmad Shah Massoud’s son, aims to set up a federal, decentralized, and democratic government in Afghanistan. The NRF currently pushes to drain the enemy, conduct targeted strikes and liberate more regions and accumulate resources so that they could cause further threats to the Taliban in the long term.

Since the Taliban’s return to power several other gangs have announced their presence in Afghanistan including the Afghanistan Islamic National and Liberation Movement, Soldiers of Hazaristan, Freedom Corps, the Liberation Front of Afghanistan, etc. Not much is known about their members or their presence on the ground, with their social media handles their propaganda against the Taliban regime.

Despite all the odds, the resistance against the Taliban regime, be it social media propaganda, armed resistance, or protests, continues at different levels, leading to further tensions and chaos in the country in the long term.

Daily Evacuation Brief January 11, 2023
[AfghanDigest]
The first issue of the Afghan Digest was published a year ago this week.

During this time, we have always striven to provide timely and accurate information that is intended to inform and safeguard those who have borne the brunt of the suffering during this shameful episode in human history.

We have done our best to piece together the fragments blown our way on turbulent winds to help protect vulnerable Afghans and to aid others engaged in the mission of safeguarding human rights.

To achieve this, we have worked diligently to build an information network, do our best to get it “right”, and adjust when we miss the mark.

We do not celebrate this date. Quite the opposite, we lament the need for our existence.

We dedicate this edition to all the Afghans who have lost their lives and to those who remain in hiding, hoping and praying for better days ahead. Also to the many anonymous sources who risk their lives each day to help us make sense of the chaos. You are the true heroes and you will not be forgotten!

Sincerely,

The Afghan Digest Staff

LAST 24 HOURS
  • ORGANIZATION OF ISLAMIC COOPERATION TO MEET TODAY, AFGHANISTAN TOPS THE AGENDA – The OIC will convene its third meeting to discuss the Afghanistan situation. The group had swiftly condemned the Taliban’s decisions to remove women from society and has repeatedly made calls for a reversal of the policies. While the Taliban hierarchy are no strangers to international criticism, the OIC carries far more weight in the circles the Taliban hope to curry favor with. In addition, the populace may view any forthcoming rebuke as a sign the Taliban are out of step with the rest of the global Islamic community.

  • RUMORS OF A TALIBAN ‘CENSUS’ BEING TAKEN TO IDENTIFY WOMEN AND GIRLS OF MARRYING AGE – While scattered reports of this activity had materialized virtually as soon as the Taliban swept to power. It was believed to have happened sporadically. We have now received recurring reports across several provinces that tend to suggest the program has expanded and may be ramping up.
Going back to their old habit of helping themselves to wives from among the locals, whether the locals are interested or not.
  • UNCONFIRMED RUMORS OF US POLITICIANS MEETING WITH EXILED GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS IN TURKEY – Unsubstantiated reports claim that a meeting was held between unidentified US lawmakers and former Afghan leaders living in exile in Turkey. While the US politicians were not identified, it was said that Masoom Stanekzai and Batur Dostum were in attendance. We have yet to verify these reports.

  • TALIBAN TO FORM A COMMISSION ON GIRLS’/WOMENS’ EDUCATION – The Taliban announced the formation of a commission to look into how they could reopen education for females. The composition of the commission straddles several ministries. According to an international Muslim visiting body, the commission will work according to a schedule that will be released soon. It is not clear if the commission has been established to work on the problem or if it is merely a shadow play to give the impression that the Taliban is doing something. Most Afghanistan observers are skeptical that the Supreme Leader and his mob of Deobandian clerics will ever revise their flawed interpretations of Sharia when it comes to women. Many believe the commission is a ploy and the announcement of its formation was rapidly followed by calls for recognition and the release of frozen assets. It may also signal that the recent stoppage of economic aid has the group worried about an economic freefall.

  • UNIVERSITIES KEEPING THEIR CURRENT NAMES – The Ministry of Higher Education said on Tuesday that reports circulating on social media that the Taliban intended to change the names of many of the prominent Universities in the country were completely untrue.

  • MORE WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES ORDERED TO CLOSE – Reports out of Balkh on Monday stated that the Ministry of Vice and Virtue had informed several proprietors of women-owned businesses that they would be forced to close Thursday. Yesterday, a similar warning was issued to women-owned businesses in Baghlan Province. Ministry agents in Baghlan went so far as to send letters to companies and real estate agents, warning them not to rent to women. Our analysis indicates this policy will likely be implemented across the country.

NEXT 24 HOURS
INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS WILL BE WATCHING THE RESULTS OF THE OIC MEETINGS – Most will be looking for an official statement from OIC members regarding their stance with the Taliban. Opposition leaders, Resistance groups, and moderates among the Taliban are hoping for a statement of unanimous condemnation. Such a message could empower moderates who hope to force the Supreme Leader and his cabal aside.

Russian-Ukrainian war and climate change give birth to new generation of terrorists in Africa: Al Azhar
[AlAhram] al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (AOCE) said that the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine, climate change and food security are all contributing to producing a new generation of turbans in Africa.

According to the African languages monitor unit at the AOCE, terrorist organizations have used the war between Russia and Ukraine, climate change, and the food crisis in Africa to attract and recruit a new generation of African youth. Adverse living conditions and the impact of current events force these youth to resort to violence as a way to improve their status and realise their aspirations, said the observatory in a report published last week.

Furthermore, since it broke out in February 2022, the war in Ukraine has had an adverse impact on efforts to combat bad boy and terrorist organizations.

Cairo sees Israel as being led by ‘2 governments,’ Egypt official reportedly says
“Pay attention to USSSSSSSSS — we’re important!!
So important that there’s nothing about it in Al Ahram.
[IsraelTimes] Source says ties steady despite censure of Ben Gvir’s Temple Mount visit; notes Cairo distinguishes between ’far-right government’ and international-facing Netanyahu-led leadership

Despite Egypt’s condemnation of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s visit to the Temple Mount last week, relations between the neighboring countries are continuing without "major tension," an unnamed Egyptian official was quoted as saying Monday.

The official also reportedly told the London-based Asharq al-Awsat news outlet that his country views Israel as being led by "two governments" — an bully boy one at home and a more moderate one representing Israel in its relations abroad.

Ben Gvir toured the flashpoint site, which is revered by both Jews and Moslems and is a central focal point of the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict, last week. His move was met with an international outcry.

Relations between Jerusalem and Cairo regarding the Paleostinian issue will be affected by the matter, the unnamed source said, but "without this meaning major tension or difficulties in bilateral relations."

The report repeated earlier claims that Netanyahu had given his blessing to Ben Gvir’s actions despite having earlier promised Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi he would "maintain the calm" and prevent the far-right minister from visiting.

Egypt regularly mediates between Israel and Paleostinian terrorist group Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw,, which governs the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. Strip and shares a border with Egypt.

The source explained that Netanyahu, mindful of Egypt’s crucial role in moderating relations between Israel and the Paleostinians, would work to "avoid provoking" Cairo.

The unnamed Egyptian source claimed that Cairo viewed the new government in Jerusalem as two separate entities: "The first government is led by the far-right, and the second government presents itself to the world as being led by Netanyahu."

He said Ben Gvir’s actions were "an attempt by the far-right to test the waters for the implementation of its plans towards all Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem, to which Egypt responded quickly and decisively through its Foreign Ministry statement."

Following the incident, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said: "Egypt deplores the storming of al-Aqsa Mosque by an Israeli official" and warned of "negative repercussions" to security and stability in the region.

On Sunday, a report in the al-Araby al-Jadeed newspaper said there was "resentment" and "embarrassment" in the Sissi’s office due to Netanyahu’s decision to allow Ben Gvir to visit the flashpoint site.

Both outlets reported that a series of Israeli sanctions against the Paleostinian Authority, approved last week, would constitute another strain on relations.

The sanctions, which include seizing $40 million in tax revenues Israel collects on behalf of the PA and channeling them to Israeli victims of Paleostinian terrorism, came in response to Ramallah’s successful initiative at the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
to have the International Court of Justice draft a legal opinion on Israel’s conduct in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Israel and Egypt signed a peace agreement in 1979 but relations have been mostly frosty, though the government has maintained close security ties in recent years. The countries share security interests in the Gaza Strip as well as in Sinai and the eastern Mediterranean, but most Egyptians reject ties with Israel.

Cairo, like Jerusalem, sees Gaza’s Hamas rulers as a serious threat and has restricted crossings to and from the enclave.

Undeterred by threats, Charlie Hebdo publishes more Khamenei cartoons
[IsraelTimes] A week after angering Tehran with caricatures of ayatollah, French satirical magazine doubles down, says ’laughing at themselves has never been a strong point of tyrants’.

Hezbollah urges France to punish Charlie Hebdo over Khamenei cartoons
[IsraelTimes] Tehran-backed Lebanese terror group urges government to discipline satirical weekly for images that ’flouted dignity of entire nation’

Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. ...
’s powerful Hezbollah terror movement on Tuesday condemned cartoons of Iran’s supreme leader published last week by the French weekly Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
, calling on Gay Paree to punish the satirical magazine.

The magazine said the caricatures of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...
were published in support of protests in Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
sparked by the death in jug of Mahsa Amini, after her arrest for an alleged breach of the country’s strict dress code for women.

Tehran’s close ally Hezbollah called on "the French government to take firm measures to punish the perpetrators of this act, who attacked what is sacred and flouted the dignity of an entire nation."

Khamenei "is not just the leader of a great country — he is a religious reference for tens of millions of followers," the Shiite movement said in a statement.

Following the publication of the cartoons on Wednesday, Iran summoned the French ambassador to Tehran and closed a research institute affiliated with La Belle France’s foreign ministry.

In Tehran on Sunday, dozens of Iranians — most of them religious seminary students — protested against the publication in front of La Belle France’s embassy and burned French flags.

Charlie Hebdo, seen by supporters as a champion of freedom of speech and by critics as needlessly provocative, has a style that is controversial even within La Belle France.

It has repeatedly caused diplomatic problems abroad for the French government, which has no links with the magazine but faces domestic pressure to defend its right to free speech in an officially secular country.

In 2015 Charlie Hebdo’s Gay Paree offices were attacked by button men who killed 12 people, following the publication of caricatures depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

Deterioration in Afghan ties could lead to ‘never-ending’ war against terrorism: Imran
[Dawn] PTI Chairman Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who ain't the brightest knife in the national drawer...
on Tuesday slammed the coalition government’s "irresponsible statements" against the Afghan government, warning that a deterioration in ties could lead to a "never-ending" war against terrorism.

Over the past few months, terrorism has been rearing its head again in the country, especially in KP and Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
. Pakistain has seen a rise in terrorist attacks across the country, believed to have been planned and directed by the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain (TTP) leaders based in Afghanistan.

The TTP, which has ideological linkages with the Afghan Taliban, executed more than 100 attacks last year, most of which happened after August when the group’s peace talks with the Pakistain government began to falter. The ceasefire was formally ended last year on Nov 28 by the TTP.

Addressing a seminar on terrorism on Tuesday, Imran addressed the criticism levelled at the PTI government for leading peace talks with the TTP and said his opponents should not "lie to the people".

He said that all stakeholders had sat down and were informed about the need for talks with the TTP and the plan to resettle their members. "A military operation can be a part of the overall peace settlement but it is never successful on its own."

Imran also criticised Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s "irresponsible" statements about Pakistain taking action against TTP hideouts in Afghanistan.

He warned that if the new Afghan government decided to stop cooperating with Pakistain, it could lead to a "never-ending" war against terrorism.

Imran also questioned why recent incidents at the Pak-Afghan border were not taken up with the Afghan government, reiterating that another war against terrorism would become a curse for the country if relations with Afghanistan deteriorated.

He said that the federal government would need to tread carefully and seek KP’s input on the overall terror situation. He said that Pakistain should not seek help from the United States as it would lead to internal discord among locals if drone attacks were carried out.

’WRONG TO EXPECT KP POLICE TO CONFRONT TERRORISM THREAT’
During his address, Imran — whose party is in power in KP — said it was wrong to expect the provincial police to confront the rising wave of terrorism, adding that the bully boyz were much more heavily equipped.

"To expect the police to face them (terrorists) with the kind of weapons they have is not possible. Rangers are present in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
and terrorism there is not at the level of KP. There is no comparison between them."

He said bully boyz operating in KP were "battle-hardened" with access to the latest weaponry abandoned by the US when it pulled out of Afghanistan in 2021.

Imran said it would be wrong to assume that the KP police could confront such terrorists, at least until the federal government did not pay full attention to the matter.

The PTI chief said terrorism was a very important issue for the country and could have greater consequences if not properly addressed, "especially at a time when our economic conditions can’t bear it at all".

The PTI chief alleged that the federal government had withheld funds for the tribal districts and did not pay attention to the resettlement of 30,000-40,000 TTP members from Afghanistan.

Imran said the time immediately after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan was a "golden opportunity" to solve the TTP issue since the new Afghan government was "pro-Pakistain" and could exert influence on the TTP.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
US envoy says he’s not boycotting Ben Gvir but will primarily deal with Netanyahu
It was only days ago that the Biden team was going to stay as far away from that horrid Bibi Netanyahu as possible. How times have changed.
[IsraelTimes] US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides denied on Tuesday that he or the Biden administration (aka the Wilmington comorra)
...the pack of self-imagined masterminds of strategy and intrigue at the service of the Biden Crime Family and a grateful nation...
have imposed a boycott against far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir but said Washington would primarily be working with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as it adapts to bilateral ties under the new hardline Israeli government.

"There’s no boycott. I don’t do boycotts... We are going to work with the Israeli government. It is a democratically elected government," Nides responded after being prompted on the matter during an interview with the Kan public broadcaster. "We’ll work with everyone. But in principle, [who] I’ll be working with is the prime minister."

The preference to work with Netanyahu is one that has been vocalized by Biden officials in recent weeks and it is part of what they say is a new approach that aims to hold the longtime premier accountable for the policies of some of his far-right coalition partners, such as Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, of the Religious Zionism party.

Anti-Zionist Haredi sect members visit Jenin, meet terror-linked Palestinians
[IsraelTimes] Neturei Karta followers enter West Bank refugee camp, meet figures tied to Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
, one of whom is shown in video praising them for their opposition to Israel.

Several members of the fringe anti-Zionist ultra-Orthodox sect Neturei Karta entered Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank on Monday and met with Paleostinians from local terror groups

According to Hebrew and Arabic-language reports, the Neturei Karta members met with prominent Paleostinian Islamic Jihad terror group officials as well as families of terrorist attackers. The Jenin camp is seen as a hotbed of Paleostinian terrorism.

Neturei Karta opposes the modern State of Israel on religious grounds, regularly protesting against the Jewish state, and has met with Holocaust deniers and leaders of the Iranian government in the past.

Two of the Neturei Karta members were photographed wearing scarves with Paleostinian national colors and carrying Paleostinian flags.

Video shared on social media showed them visiting the home of senior PIJ official bigwig Bassam al-Saadi, who is in jail in Israel. Saadi’s detention last year sparked a round of fighting between Israel and the Gazoo

Another video showed the pair at the entrance to the Jenin refugee camp along with former terror inmate Maher al-Akhras who is also tied to PIJ, the Kan public broadcaster reported.

Akhras, who in 2020 went on hunger strike for over 100 days to protest his detention by Israeli authorities, is seen praising the two visitors for not recognizing the Sate of Israel.

Channel 12 news reported that although local button men tried to harm the delegation, they were prevented from doing so.

by Israel seven times over the years, according to the Shin Bet.

He was arrested on August 1 by Israeli troops in Jenin. The PIJ at the time announced it was declaring a state of alert, and the Israel Defense Forces said it had "concrete" indications of an "imminent" attack on the Gaza border, putting the area on lockdown for several days.

Three days later the IDF launched a series of Arclight airstrike

s in Gaza against a senior PIJ commander and several anti-tank guided missile squads, which prompted rocket fire from the Strip. After nearly three days of fighting a ceasefire agreement was signed, which reportedly included "Egypt’s commitment to work towards the release of" Saadi and another Paleostinian detainee, Khalil Awawdeh, a terror group spokesperson said at the time.

The Shin Bet has said that in the months before his arrest Saadi "worked even harder to restore PIJ activities, in which he was behind the creation of a significant military force of the organization in Samaria in general and in Jenin in particular," referring to the northern West Bank.

Iranian police reportedly ordered to ‘firmly punish’ hijab violations
[IsraelTimes] Mehr news agency reports law enforcement ordered to crack down on those violating law, with punishments including ’exile, bans on certain professions and closing workplaces’

Iran’s judiciary has ordered police to "firmly punish" women who violate the country’s hijab law, a news agency reported Tuesday, after nearly four months of deadly protests against the measures.

Demonstrations have swept Iran
...The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both...
since the September 16 death in jug of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old ethnic Kurd, after her arrest in Tehran for allegedly failing to adhere to the law.

Since the outbreak of the protests, the morality police unit charged with enforcing the hijab rules has been less visible and women have taken to the streets without mandatory headscarves.

But authorities signaled less tolerance since the start of the year, with police warning that women must wear headscarves even in cars.

On Tuesday, Mehr news agency reported that the prosecutor general had issued a directive in which "police were ordered to firmly punish any hijab violations."

"Courts must sentence the violators, as well as fine them, to additional penalties such as exile, bans on practicing certain professions and closing workplaces," it quoted the judiciary as saying.

Iran has executed four people over the protests sparked by Amini’s death in the custody of the morality police. Another 13 have been sentenced to death, and six have been granted retrials.

Authorities say hundreds of people, including security personnel, have been killed and thousands arrested in connection with the protests, which they generally describe as "riots."

In recent weeks, the judiciary has closed several cafes and restaurants for serving bareheaded women.

AANES Hands Over 2 Women, 13 Children Of ISIS Families To Spain

The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)
...that’s the Kurds. The SDF is their military arm...
handed over on Monday two Spanish women and 13 children of the family members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Organization’s (ISIS) holy warriors to Spain.

This took place after a Spanish delegation headed by Guillermo Anguera Gual, Adviser in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the AANES-held areas, according to AANES’ Department of Foreign Relations.

The delegation was received by officials of the department, Women’s Board and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).

During the meeting, both parties talked about the humanitarian, political, economic and security situations in Syria and the necessity of solving the Syrian crisis in line with the UN resolution 2254.

Fanar al-Gaeit, deputy co-chair of the department, said that the AANES "adopts intra-Syrian dialogue to achieve stability and political solution."

Al-Gaeit stressed that Ottoman Turkish-Syrian rapprochement does not accomplish Syrians’ interests. "Ottoman Turkish threats to carry out an incursion in northeastern Syria will lead to a humanitarian catastrophe and they go against the goal of International Coalition [US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS], which is maintaining peace and security in the region."

The official said that the persistent closure al-Ya’rubiyah (Tel Kocher) border crossing increases the economic and humanitarian consequences, "which is unfair to millions of people who live in north and east Syria."

Gual, in turn, stressed that Spain supports the AANES in all sectors, including humanitarian, economic and security ones through the Coalition.
