Sudan declares cholera outbreak as 16 dead in Gedaref State
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Sudan
...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans...
has declared a cholera outbreak in Gedaref State after four of the 264 suspected cases were confirmed and 16 deaths associated with the deadly disease reported since September 25.

Investigations, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), are ongoing to determine whether cholera has also spread to Khartoum and South Kordofan states, where increased cases of acute watery diarrhoea have been reported.

The WHO Representative in Sudan, Dr. Nima Abid visited Gedaref on 17 September and met with health authorities and partners to coordinate responses.

"Unhindered access to affected and neighbouring localities is essential to respond effectively to the ongoing outbreak," said Dr Abid.

He added, "A cholera outbreak can have a devastating effect in the context of a health system already overstretched because of war, shortages of medical supplies and health workers, malnutrition and access challenges."

According to WHO, supplies that included antibiotics, oral rehydration solution and intravenous fluids were already provided to six states, including Gedaref, Khartoum and South Kordofan before the outbreak of cholera was declared.

Also provided, it stated, were rapid diagnostic test kits to all the 18 states of Sudan.

Egypt: Free access to military museums to mark 50th anniversary of October War victory
Astonishingly enough, they’re serious. And in a meta sense, since they got back territory they’d lost in their previous wars of attempted conquest, did not lose Cairo to Ariel Sharon’s rampaging tanks, and have received billions of dollars from Uncle Sugar, the miles of dead Egyptian soldiers and abandoned war matériel don’t really matter.
[AlAhram] Military museums will open their doors to the public for free from 1 to 6 October, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the victory in the 6th of October War, according to a statement by the Egyptian Armed Forces front man.

The museums include the October War Panorama in Nasr City, along with the three military museums located at al-Alamein, Port Said, and Saladin Citadel, the statement said.

The military spokesperson emphasized that this initiative will promote military and national awareness among the youth. It aims to acquaint them with the valor and heroism displayed by Egyptians in the Armed Forces, as well as their sacrifices in defence of the nation's honour, the front man said.

Additionally, the Cabinet declared Thursday, 5 October as a paid holiday for public sector employees.

This year, Egypt celebrates the 50th anniversary of its historic triumph over Israel, a victory that led to the liberation of Sinai and was achieved under the leadership of the late President Anwar El-Sadat.

New Gabon president Gen. Nguema visits The Congo, lobbies for lifting of sanctions
[AFRICANEWS] Gabon's new strongman was greeted by The Congo's Prime minister upon arrival on Sunday (Oct. 1) at Ollombo international airport. He then met with president Denis Sassou Nguesso.

Oligui said his visit was aimed at improving the ties and easing Gabon's international isolation following the coup.

"I have come to consult, to discuss, to exchange with (the president), who for us is a key in the region, who can relay to global authorities what we have done," Oligui said after holding talks with Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The talks were held near Oyo, in central Congo.

"It is also to ease the sanctions... we hope to once again take our place among the nations," Oligui said.

Gabon was suspended from the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
and the Economic Community of Central Africa States (ECCAS) after the change of government.

ECCAS has also ordered the immediate transfer of its headquarters from Gabon's Libreville to the Equatorial Guinea capital Malabo.

The Congo president did not address news hounds after the talks, but his Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Gakosso hailed Oligui as "a man of humility and reconciliation."

"I think that the Gabonese should support him and aside from the Gabonese, the Congolese. Also, our brothers in central Africa", he told news hounds.

"We know that there was a change in Libreville," Gakosso said. "The main thing is that there was no bloodshed."

"We have rarely seen this, a forceful change of regime without bloodshed."

"The Congo and Gabon are in reality the same country. We have to work tirelessly, have good relations," he said.

Rumours of feared military coup in Saudi Arabia as two pilots executed for 'treason'
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
’s execution of two pilots more than two weeks ago reflects fears of possible military coups amid "discontent within an exhausted and poorly paid army," Fair Observer reported.

According to the website, On September 14, Saudi authorities announced that two army pilots, Lieutenant Colonel Pilot Majid bin Musa Awad al-Balawi and Chief Sergeant Yusef bin Reda Hassan, had been executed.

Saudi Arabia, wary of possible coups, is cracking down strictly on discontent within its underpaid and worn-out army.

"High treason" as a legal concept does not exist in Saudi Arabia anyway, because there is no such thing in Sharia law, which — despite massive reform in Islamic institutions in recent years — remains fundamental to the kingdom’s judicial process. While the concept of treason does exist in Sharia, it usually refers to collaborating with the enemy in terms of espionage, but it is carefully qualified and does not automatically lead to execution.

Opposition sources say al-Balawi and Hassan were executed after refusing to bomb civilian targets in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
. They may also have been recorded criticizing Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince and modernizer of Saudi Arabia as of 2016. The Turks hate him, so he must be all right, despite the occasional brutal murder of Qatar-owned journalists...
(MbS).

According to Fair Observer, no Sharia court could justify sentencing someone to death for refusing to bomb civilians in Yemen, hence the unspecific treason charges. But as everyone in the kingdom understands, the courts are highly politicized and serve the wishes of the crown prince’s regime.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Silence falls on Karabakh after refugee exodus
[AlAhram] Silence has returned to the mountain road down which most of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh fled after the self-proclaimed republic surrendered to Azerbaijani troops.

After nine days of fear and panic, the exodus of Armenians is over with the Lachin Corridor that links Karabakh to Armenia all but deserted except for a rare car, said AFP news hounds there on a visit organised by Azerbaijani authorities.

On a hill, the Armenian flag flew next to a group of civilian volunteers waiting for the last refugees to arrive.

In the middle of a bridge between them and an Azerbaijani checkpoint, sat an armoured car belonging to Russian peacekeepers deployed there as part of a peace deal after the 2020 war that Armenia lost.

A clapped-out old Russian 4X4 puffed up to the Azerbaijani customs, with a mattress, furniture and a bike strapped to its roof. Its driver, Sergei Astsarian, showed his ID to the Azerbaijanis, who are equipped with the latest digital technology. The 40-year-old shopkeeper said he finally decided to leave his home in the rebel capital of Stepanakert, which gave up its 30-year separatist struggle after a lightning offensive by Azerbaijani troops. In the past few days, Astsarian said he had been living in the city "alone, like the last of the Mohicans" and was concerned that he might get stuck there forever.

'YOU CAN STAY'
Despite appeals by Azerbaijan for ethnic Armenians to stay in Karabakh, Astsarian said he left because there had been no "concrete guarantees", just "verbal" ones.

"I spoke to the police and they said: 'You can stay'. I said: 'To do what?'"

"But if we want to come back, they said: 'No problem, you can live in your homes. And for those of you who have been living in Azeri homes, there will be new ones built.'".

Tens of thousands of ethnic Azeris fled Karabakh during a war in the 1990s and many now dream of returning.

Astsarian said he hoped to join relatives living in Europe.

After a quick inspection, the car crept forward to go under a huge X-ray scanner, before Astsarian drove on towards the Armenian flag, without looking back.

But further up the road taken by the more than 100,000 refugees who have fled to Armenia in just over a week there were eerie remains of the exodus.

ABANDONED BELONGINGS
There were several Russian checkpoints on the road that winds through the valley and no Azerbaijani soldiers could be seen -- only Azerbaijan's internal security forces.

In Lissagorsk, a yellow minibus laden with luggage could be seen stopped under a Russian flag at one of the checkpoints.

On board were around 15 elderly men looking out at a foggy road through dirty windows.

They declined to say where they were from.

There has been very little information filtering through from the rebel capital Stepanakert, known as Khankendi in Azeri, whose population of 55,000 has mostly left after the separatists' surrender last month.

The city is still inaccessible to the media for "security reasons".

For the first time in 30 years, a UN mission visited the enclave on Sunday to assess the humanitarian needs there.

White trucks belonging to the International Committee of the Red Thingy, among the few humanitarian agencies able to access the enclave, could be seen on the Lachin road.

The Red Thingy is engaged in "life-saving activities" such as transporting the maimed and bringing medical supplies, the organization's operations manager Carlos Morazzani said in Geneva on Friday.

He said they were also working on transporting the corpses of civilians and soldiers killed in the fighting last month following a "large influx of bodies".

Germany's first cohort of locally trained imams graduates
[DW] Germany set up its own training school for imams due to the large number of foreign-trained Islamic religious leaders. The issue now is the lack of jobs for the graduates.
It would be easy enough to mandate that imams must graduate from the domestic program before being allowed to work in Germany, in the process acquiring a certificate in German language fluency and vetting by the security services to ensure no connection to feeder or jihadi groups.
Twenty-four Moslems from across Germany formally passed their imam training at the country's new Islamkolleg Deutschland in the northwestern city of Osnabruck on Saturday.
No doubt subsequent classes will be bigger.
The graduates, who included men and women, received their first certificate of completion after attending a two-year part-time course.

"This is a historic day," said the chairman of the Islamkolleg's board of trustees, former German President Christian Wulff during a presser.

For the first time, imam aspirants completed their practical training in Germany, in the German language and with academic support, he added.

"This has not happened before, but was long overdue in view of the millions of Moslems in our country," Wulff said, adding that the college was making an important contribution to peacebuilding and integration.

Some 5.5 million Moslems live in Germany — around 6% of the population.

Wulff said the Islamkolleg is now a recognized training center and receives many inquiries, even from abroad.

WHY DID GERMANY CREATE ITS OWN IMAM TRAINING?
Germany announced four years ago that it would create a state-backed training center for Islamic leaders to help reduce the number of imams coming in from abroad, mostly The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
Germany currently has between 2,000 to 2,500 Islamic religious leaders, who tend to come to Germany for four or five years, are often paid by their home countries and know very little about the local culture and custom

Many of the imams are also officials of the Ottoman Turkish state who pursue a political agenda in Germany, officials have said.
Preparation for absorption into the neo-Ottoman caliphate could be considered a political agenda.
Ankara's influence on the Moslem community has long been a thorny issue, especially since the failed coup against President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really more important...
in 2016.

WHERE ARE THE JOBS?
The former German president expressed his confidence that the difficulties graduates may face in finding employment could be resolved in the coming years, especially if jobs in Islamic welfare work, including chaplains, can be created by the state.

The Catholic charity Caritas and its protestant equivalent Diakonie both receive state funding.

Germany's Defense Ministry has spoken favorably about employing Moslem chaplains in the German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, in the future.

The chairman of the Central Council of Moslems in Germany, Aiman Mazyek, expressed his delight at the first graduates. But said the state should not be allowed to finance religious personnel, directly or indirectly.
“No, no, certainly not. He who pays the piper calls the tune, and we can’t have the secular German state influencing imams, who properly belong to the Ummah — more specifically who would not, unlike the General Council, be a front for the Turkish right-wing extremist group, the Gray Wolves.”
He said he could imagine job-sharing arrangements for imams who could additionally work as religious teachers at schools.

Bulent Ucar, the director of the Islamkolleg Deutschland said would like to see imam training "become mainstream" and said he was confident that job prospects would improve.

Immigrants in Germany: Who gets what kind of support?
In case anyone wondered:
[DW] Opposition leader Friedrich Merz has again ruffled feathers with a populist statement targeting refugees. It is not the first time he has misrepresented refugees' entitlement to state benefits. DW has the facts.

The debate about migration policy in Germany now revolves around limiting the number of refugee arrivals. And around the question of whether the benefits for asylum seekers create false incentives. But who receives what benefits in Germany depends fundamentally on the status of the refugees.

HEALTH CARE
Asylum seekers receive only acutely necessary medical and dental care.

Acute medical emergencies, such as injuries, must be treated in hospitals. The social welfare office covers the costs.

Health care is regulated differently in the 16 federal states. In many states, asylum seekers must apply for a treatment certificate from the relevant social welfare office before receiving treatment.

Once the asylum application has been approved, or after 18 months of waiting, refugees have access to the regular health services provided by the statutory health insurance funds.

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, as of August 31 there were 298,000 asylum seekers and other refugees in this category.

Cosmetic surgery is not covered by health insurance.

ACCOMMODATION
Asylum seekers are usually first housed in a so-called initial reception facility. These are often large accommodations such as former barracks. People live in shared rooms without their own cooking facilities but are provided with full meals. The stay in an initial reception facility can last between a few weeks and several months with 18 months the maximum duration.

Eventually, asylum seekers are distributed to the municipalities, where they are entitled to accommodation which can be an emergency shelter, a hostel or collective housing for refugees.

Most of the shared housing units can accommodate a few dozen to several hundred people. These can be newly constructed buildings with several self-contained cooking facilities and bathrooms and shared areas with playground equipment for children. Sometimes refugee accommodation is in run-down houses in remote parts of town, where refugees have to share rooms with four or five other people.

During the asylum procedure, asylum seekers' freedom of movement is restricted: For the duration of the procedure and sometimes beyond, they are obliged to live in the assigned place. They are not allowed to work. Initially, they can not attend German classes.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
What asylum seekers are entitled to is regulated by the so-called Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act.

If asylum seekers live in an initial reception facility or shared accommodation, they are provided with items that count as "necessary needs." This includes food, shelter, heating, clothing, health and personal care products, and household goods. The protection seekers are also entitled to pocket money. For single beneficiaries, this is currently about 150 euros ($158) per month.

If food, clothing and other daily necessities are not provided in kind, asylum seekers receive a cash benefit of €367 per month.

If asylum seekers do voluntary work, they may receive up to €200 euros in compensation.

REJECTED ASYLUM SEEKERS
Asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected must leave Germany.
That is the Germany müssen, which translates to the English should or ought to.
However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
many cannot be forced to return to their country of origin, for example, if war is raging there or if they cannot receive vital health care there, or because their origin is unclear and they are without documents.
Or if someone feels sorry for such people, and does not take the mandated next steps.
In such cases, they are allowed to remain in Germany temporarily
...where the duration is carefully undefined...
and are granted a so-called Duldung (tolerated status). This currently affects 140,000 people.
...of those who actually filled out the paperwork, so does not include those who arrived quietly and went straight into a life of crime or indentured servitude.
They are entitled to full benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, just like asylum seekers. If they stay for a longer period, they are allowed to take on a job or undergo training.
Unvetted de facto immigrants, in other words. Actually they are vetted, at least as asylum seekers, and failed to make the cut.
In addition, Germany accepts refugees under the Geneva Convention, who fear persecution for their ethnicity, religion, or membership of a particular social group. These do not go through an asylum or other recognition procedure but are immediately granted a residence permit upon arrival and are entitled to benefits as long as they can not finance themselves.

SPECIAL CASE: UKRAINIAN WAR REFUGEES
The estimated 1.1 million war refugees from Ukraine are a special case in this category. They are granted a residence permit for temporary protection for a period of two years without an asylum procedure. This includes an immediate and unrestricted right to work.

Those who cannot work are entitled to the full range of benefits: This includes accommodation and the same benefits German citizens receive, known as "Burgergeld" or citizen's income. Currently (September 2023), the citizen's income for single adults amounts to €502 per month for living expenses. They also have regular health insurance.

Home Front: WoT
High-Level Iranian Spy Ring Busted in Washington
A taste:
[TabletMagazine] The trail that leads from Tehran to D.C. passes directly through the offices of Robert Malley and the International Crisis Group.

The Biden administration’s now-suspended Iran envoy Robert Malley helped to fund, support, and direct an Iranian intelligence operation designed to influence the United States and allied governments, according to a trove of purloined Iranian government emails. The emails, which were reported on by veteran Wall Street Journal correspondent Jay Solomon, writing in Semafor, and by Iran International, the London-based émigré opposition outlet which is the most widely read independent news source inside Iran, were published last week after being extensively verified over a period of several months by the two outlets. They showed that Malley had helped to infiltrate an Iranian agent of influence named Ariane Tabatabai into some of the most sensitive positions in the U.S. government—first at the State Department and now the Pentagon, where she has been serving as chief of staff for the assistant secretary of defense for special operations, Christopher Maier.

On Thursday, Maier told a congressional committee that the Defense Department is “actively looking into whether all law and policy was properly followed in granting my chief of staff top secret special compartmented information.”

The emails, which were exchanged over a period of several years between Iranian regime diplomats and analysts, show that Tabatabai was part of a regime propaganda unit set up in 2014 by the Iranian Foreign Ministry. The Iran Experts Initiative (IEI) tasked operatives drawn from Iranian diaspora communities to promote Iranian interests during the clerical regime’s negotiations with the United States over its nuclear weapons program. Though several of the IEI operatives and others named in the emails have sought to portray themselves on social media as having engaged with the regime in their capacity as academic experts, or in order to promote better understanding between the United States and Iran, none has questioned the veracity of the emails.

The contents of the emails are damning, showing a group of Iranian American academics being recruited by the Iranian regime, meeting together in foreign countries to receive instructions from top regime officials, and pledging their personal loyalty to the regime. They also show how these operatives used their Iranian heritage and Western academic positions to influence U.S. policy toward Iran, first as outside “experts” and then from high-level U.S. government posts. Both inside and outside of government, the efforts of members of this circle were repeatedly supported and advanced by Malley, who served as the U.S. government’s chief interlocutor with Iran under both the Obama and the Biden administrations. Malley is also the former head of the International Crisis Group (ICG), which directly paid and credentialed several key members of the regime’s influence operation.

The IEI, according to a 2014 email from one Iranian official to one of Iran’s lead nuclear negotiators, “consisted of a core group of 6-10 distinguished second-generation Iranians who have established affiliation with the leading international think-tanks and academic institutions, mainly in Europe and the US.” The network was funded and supported by an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) official, Mostafa Zahrani, who was the point of contact between IEI operatives, and Iran’s then-Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.

According to the correspondence, the IEI recruited several U.S.-based analysts, including Tabatabai, Ali Vaez, and Dina Esfandiary, all of whom willingly accepted Iranian guidance. These Middle East experts were then subsequently hired, credentialed, supported, and funded by Malley and the ICG where he was president from January 2018 until January 2021, when he joined the Biden administration. Malley was also ICG’s program director for Middle East and North Africa before the Obama administration tapped him in February 2014 to run negotiations for the Iran nuclear deal. Vaez joined the ICG in 2012 and served as Malley’s top deputy.

Emails quoted in the stories show that even once in government, Malley directed Vaez’s actions at ICG, sending him to Vienna where the Iranian and U.S. teams held nuclear negotiations. “Following the order of his previous boss Malley, Ali Vaez will come to Vienna,” Zahrani reportedly wrote Zarif in an April 3, 2014, email. “Who from our group do you instruct to have a meeting with him?”

The name Tabatabai should have been suspect from the git-go. From the Khomeini epoch to the present (there is a Tabatabai who represents the present Iran government in Lebanon), the name occurs over again in Islamist revolutionary circumstances.

Who might be the Clinton cartel's biggest enemy behind the scenes in the post Bidet struggle for the next Puppet Show?

Govt to expel over 1 million illegal immigrants, Afghan nationals living in Pakistan
[GEO.TV] Citing security concerns, Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar-led caretaker government on Monday announced its decision to expel 1.1 million foreigners illegally residing in Pakistain.

According to details, the government will evict illegal "aliens" in the first phase along with those who do not renew their visas.

In the second and third phases, those living in Pakistain with Afghan citizenship and possessing proof of residence cards will be deported respectively.

"Illegally resident foreigners pose a serious threat to the security of Pakistain," said a source privy to the development adding that the plan for eviction of illegally residing Afghan citizens has also been approved as this lot is involved in funding, facilitating and smuggling bandidos turbans whereas 700,000 Afghans have not renewed their proof of residence in Pakistain.

Security personnel involved in 'cross-border smuggling to face court martial'
[GEO.TV] Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti said Monday that any personnel of security forces found involved in cross-border smuggling would be court-martialed.

The government has intensified its crackdown on smugglers involved in transporting commodities and dollars to Afghanistan, especially in the last few months when havoc was wreaked on the already weakening economy.

The crackdown bore fruit as speculation diminished and the rupee recovered sharply against the greenback to become the best-performing currency globally, but analysts fear another round of depreciation as they are sceptical about the long-term effects of administrative measures.

"If I say that security forces weren't involved in [smuggling], it won't be right as the [smuggled] items are transported via trucks, not camels," Bugti said during a presser in Islamabad.

He said that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir had told military personnel that whoever is found involved in illegal cross-border trade would face the music.

"The Mighty Pak Army chief had told his people very clearly: there won't only be court-martials, but those involved in such activities would also be sent to jail," the security czar added.

Bugti told news hounds that the army's accountability mechanism is not made public and that's why it is not in the knowledge of the masses. "But the army has its own accountability [system], and we have not just seen it in this instance, but post-May 9 as well."

[Jpost] Pilots who do not return to service after this assessment risk facing discharge from the military.

Gaza terror group retracts call to resume border fence riots
[IsraelTimes] The Gazoo

terror group "Revolutionary Youth,"
... a wholly owned subsidiary of Hamas...
which has been organizing riots on the Israel border since mid-September, calls off a rally along the security fence a few hours after announcing it.

The group says on its Telegram channel that the call for unrest was made by some group members who had not previously consulted with the leadership, adding that whoever will go to the border today will have to take responsibility for it.

The group adds that it is still "closely monitoring" the actions of the "Zionist enemy" and whether Israel will respect the commitments that were achieved through the mediators last week.

Three migrants from Gaza desperately trying to reach Europe
Key bits. More at the link.
[DW] Among the many migrants colonists trying to make it to Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
are also young men from Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
. DW met three of them to find out what they're leaving behind, how they plan to reach Europe, and what they're hoping for once there.

A few clothes, important documents, money and cellphones ― that’s all Waseem, Wajdi and Momen packed for their start into a new life. Their plan: Cross from Gaza into Egypt at the Rafah border crossing. Then travel to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
. And then make it to the EU from there. But none of the three young men have a visa to enter the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
. They plan to join the scores of migrants colonists and asylum seekers trying to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

"Of course, it is risky. It’s difficult, but this is the only way to seek a better future," says 26-year-old Wajdi, who has never left Gaza. He is still traumatized from the war in 2014, when his family home was severely damaged.

His friend Waseem also doesn’t see his future in Gaza.

"Nobody should ask us why we want to leave Gaza. It’s impossible to make a living here," the 26-year-old says. He, like his two friends, wants to be referred to by first name only to protect their identity. "I studied hard, worked hard, stayed up late, got up early, tried everything to get a proper job and what did we achieve, besides living through wars and conflict?"

The third young man in the group, Momen, who is in his late twenties, is married and has two small children. The other two refer to him as the expert, but none of them know where they will be a few weeks from now. Momen made it to a Greek island via Turkey last year, only to be caught and sent back. Now he has secured enough money to try again. Momen hopes to bring his family along once he makes it. "My kids are afraid [of what will happen] if there is a war. Why would we have to continue living in such a situation?"

Waseem graduated with a degree in accounting six years ago but has not been able to find a job in his field. In Gaza, 59.3% of 15- to 29-year-olds are currently unemployed, according to recently published figures from the World Bank.

"I was one of the top five graduates, but none of us found a job in our field or, generally speaking, any job," says Waseem. To get a job these days, he says you need the right affiliation and connections. "They [the de facto government] take lots of taxes, but we get nothing in return. It feels like it [Gaza] is theirs, but not my home anymore."

BLEAK PROSPECTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Young Gazooks cannot look to the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which is part of the Paleostinian Territories, for work possibilities either. It is nearly impossible to get a permit from Israel to visit or to live there and work. So instead, some of those wanting to leave the claustrophobia of locked-down Gaza behind, look abroad.

Getting a visa to enter an EU country is extremely difficult. That’s why Momen, Waseem and Wajdi procured visas to Turkey, which is currently known among migrants colonists as a much more manageable endeavor. And Turkey will at least be closer to where they want to go.

Momen estimates the overall cost of the one-way journey to Europe to be between 5,000 and 12,000 euros, depending on the route. This includes visa and flight costs to Turkey, in addition to fees and transportation costs paid to smugglers at various stages.

It is a dangerous journey with many hurdles. The trouble starts with the first step: Leaving Gaza via the Rafah border crossing in the territory’s south. Getting past the crossing is a complicated process that requires prior coordination with Egyptian authorities and can take hours. In the past, the crossing was often closed entirely.

After their flight from Cairo, Egypt, to Istanbul, Turkey, the trio will travel to different coastal cities. From there on, they will depend on smugglers, who sell space on small motorboats to cross the Mediterranean to the Greek islands such as Rhodes or Lesbos. Yet more smugglers would be needed to reach the Greek mainland.

Once in Greece, the young men’s main worry would be to escape registration and to avoid being picked up by police. Ultimately, they plan to claim asylum in Belgium or in Germany, where they have friends.
And the final paragraph:
But despite all the risks, he and his friends have set off and left their home for an uncertain future. Last DW heard, Waseem has arrived in Belgium. It is unclear what happened to Wajdi after his arrival in Turkey. And Momen is still waiting for an opportunity to cross the Mediterranean to make it to Europe.

Gaza perfume company launches missile-themed fragrance
[Jpost] A video that surfaced via Palestinian media on Sunday showed a perfume shop in Gaza announcing its newest missile-themed fragrance.

Though the missile perfume may not give off the same odor as a rocket after it is launched, the presentation depicts a missile used in recent rocket attacks against Israel from the Gaza Strip.

A tweet from an Israeli reporter named the fragrance as Burak 100, after the long-range rockets used against Israel from the Islamic Jihad.
