UN Gives up on Women’s Rights in Afghanistan
[KhaamaPress] International media has reported the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
agencies including UNICEF, World Health Organization and WFP have failed to protect the rights of their female Afghan employees under the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
administration in Afghanistan.

The London-based news agency Tortoise Media has recently highlighted in one of its reports titled "UN betrays women in Afghanistan" that the organization does not protect its Afghan female employees against gender apartheid and has completely given up on the rights of Afghan women.

Furthermore, Tortoise states that UN agencies including UNICEF, World Food Program and World Health Organization have bowed to Taliban pressure, and continue operating by abiding by the group’s gender-based policies, which restrict Afghan women to work for the UN agencies in Afghanistan.

The gender-based restrictions apply only to Afghan women employees, whereas, hundreds of foreign female staff are currently employed at UN agencies across Afghanistan.

"I feel the UN did not only betray its female employees, but the whole Afghan women with this decision," said a local UN employee, reported by Tortoise.

According to Tortoise, the Taliban group has infiltrated the UN in Afghanistan — adding the organization either knowingly or unknowingly hires Taliban officials at its agencies and complexes.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio had his hands full of angry bleached blonde...
there has been a lot of criticism of the UN mission in Afghanistan. Several members of the US House of Representatives said the organization’s lack of a strong stance on gender-based restrictions on women violates the UN General Charter, the New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

quoted.

With the ban in place, Afghan women and girls have been completely erased from public life, with no prospect, optimism or chance to benefit from their basic rights under the ruling regime in Afghanistan.

UNICEF to Launch Community-Based Education Classes for Female Students in Bamyan
[KhaamaPress] The United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will conduct community-based education classes for female students in Afghanistan’s central Bamyan province, the organization said on Tuesday.

UNICEF posted a photo of female students in the classroom saying they could complete two years of school in a condensed one year.

This community-based education program is initiated by UNICEF and the financial support of the Asian Bank, the World Bank in South Asia and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
’s Humanitarian Assistance Program.

With the support of these organizations, UNICEF will be to organize 466 education classrooms to accommodate some 9400 male and female students to get an education.

UNICEF has announced by the end of 2023, the organization will organize 21,000 such programs throughout Afghanistan.

These educational programs come as the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
-run administration has closed school doors for female students above grade six for more than 600 days.

In addition to many promises, the Taliban authorities have not yet clarified when they will resume school for female students in Afghanistan. Banning secondary school and university education for female students prompted widespread condemnations in Afghanistan and overseas.

Despite the overwhelming pressure from the international community and Afghanistan’s neighbors, the Taliban administration has its own policies and priorities regarding girls’ education and women’s employment.

Two cash aid packages of $40 million arrive in Kabul in just four days
[AMUtv] Afghanistan has received two cash aid packages of each $40 million in humanitarian assistance within the span of a week after weeks of pause amidst Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
’s ban on female employees of the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
and other restrictive bans from their administration on women in the country.

The aid packages of $40 million are sent to Afghanistan every week, but after the Taliban ban on UN female employees, there was a pause in the delivery of the fund. The last package arrived in Afghanistan on March 14, according to Taliban-run Central Bank.

The UN and the United States have assured that the money will not be left under Taliban control but will be used by UN agencies in Afghanistan.

Over the past four days, the Taliban-run Central Bank has informed about the arrival of two aid packages, in total $80 million, as part of humanitarian aid to the country.

But former vice president Amrullah Saleh in a tweet said the flow of the money is connected with the Doha agreement between the US and the Taliban and that the international community "wouldn’t announce this in order to avoid potential public criticism on absolute non-existence of independent local NGOs."

"In reality, it was a conspiracy to turn a conglomerate of good terrorists, narco-traffickers and fanatics into geopolitical assets. If not, why the hefty weekly eight-digit cash delivery isn’t conditional?" he asked.

The money is usually transferred to Afghanistan International Bank (AIB) and then distributed to the UN agencies. The US special inspector for Afghanistan reconstruction has also expressed concern over Taliban influence on the fund.

"Why all meetings, from the EU representative to UN employees, are with the Taliban only? Why do they only listen to Talibs? And why are the victims of the current situation, including women and kiddies, mentioned only when they send money to the Taliban under their name?" asked Zarmina Pariani, a women’s rights activist.

"If the aid packages do not arrive in Afghanistan, the value of Afghani will fall and all the people of Afghanistan will be affected and Afghanistan will move towards a crisis," said Torek Farhadi, an analyst in political affairs.

The transfer of aid packages to Afghanistan has resumed at a time when at least 3,500 UN employees, including women, are either working from home or have not attended their offices in protest to the Taliban ban on women employees.

Islamic Emirate Reduces, Waives Various Taxes
[ToloNews] The Islamic Emirate announced on Monday that it had reduced value added tax from 4% to 2% for the industrial sector and 7% of withholding tax has been remitted in the agriculture, commerce and industrial sectors.

Ahmad Jan Bilal, a representative of the Islamic Emirate leader’s office, at a Finance Ministry press event in Kabul said that the sales tax to attend private schools and religious seminaries and universities in 1402 were also remitted.

According to Bilal, the decisions were made based on the decree of the Islamic Emirate's leader in a bid to support commerce and industry in the country.

The event was attended by the second deputy of the Prime Minister, Mullah Abdul Salam Hanafi.

"To support industry and agriculture and commerce, 7 percent of the withholding tax was remitted for them. Also, to support our industrial sector, the value added tax, which was four percent, was reduced by two percent," he said.

This comes as the Ministry of Economy (MoE) said that the Islamic Emirate supports the investors and that the domestic companies will be given priorities in extraction of mines.

"This is the policy of the Islamic Emirate to trust these domestic traders and companies. We leave the doors open for the foreign companies but if they don’t come, we cannot bring them by force. We should not very much hope and expect it," said Din Mohammad Hanif, acting Minister of Economy.

Meanwhile,
...back at the secret hideout, Scarface Al sneeringly put his proposition to little Nell...
the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MoIC), Nooruddin Azizi, urged the Afghan traders abroad to return to the country.

"Any trader who comes to Afghanistan and invests here -- it is similar as if you pour a drop of water in the throat of an orphan or widow. This is my brotherly request, that if anyone considers himself Afghan and Moslem and whoever love his/her country, come and invest in Afghanistan," he said.

"There is a need for improvement of commerce, industry, agriculture and transit in the country. Afghanistan is a central country," said Mohammad Younus Momand, acting head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI).

Hanafi also pledged that the Islamic Emirate will bring essential facilities for traders and industrial owners for passports and visas.

Egypt legalizes 216 more unlicensed churches
[AlAhram] Egypt approved on Monday the legalization of an additional 216 Christian churches that had been operating without a permit as the government continues efforts to promote freedom of worship.

This brings up the number of churches that have been legalized by the government in the past seven years to 2,815.

In 2016, parliament passed legislation easing the construction and renovation of churches as part of the government's efforts to guarantee freedom of worship.

In 2017, as per the 2016 legislation, the cabinet established a committee to review all requests to legalize the status of hundreds of unpermitted places of worship.

Comprising 10 members, the committee headed by the prime minister includes representatives from various Christian sects, six government officials from different ministries, as well as representatives from the national security and intelligence apparatus and the administrative control body.

#4  How many synagogues?

Just one has been renovated, as I recall — I believe serving the last remaining Jewish congregation in Egypt, in Alexandria. As I recall there are well under fifty members, with an average age of something like 65. But like Jewish sites elsewhere, the large government investment is intended to pay out in tourist dollars as former residents and their descendants make pilgrimages to see where Gran and Gramps lived.

#5  This sounds very impressive, but there are two problems:

1. For every church authorized to build or rebuild, some order of magnitude of mosques are likewise approved — and the government pays for mosques, while Christian congregations must pay for their own work, if they can find workers.

2. Even the the central government hands out a small number of construction/renovation permits, often the local government or the immediate local Moslem community connive to prevent the work from being done, or destroy the thing afterward.

Spokesperson says one of Libya’s rival administrations has suspended its prime minister
[AlAhram] One of Libya’s rival administrations voted Tuesday to suspend its prime minister, who has been placed under investigation, the parliament's spokesperson said.

Fathi Bashagha was prime minister of Libya's eastern-based parliament, known as the House of Representatives, which operates in Tobruk.

The reason for Bashagha's suspension and investigation was not immediately clear. Abdullah Belhaiq, the parliament spokesperson who made the announcement, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In his initial statement, Belhaiq said the House of Representatives finance minister, Osama Hamada, had taken over Bashagha’s duties.

Earlier on Tuesday, however, Bashagha issued a statement to the parliament announcing that he was passing his duties to Deputy Prime Minister Ali Qatrani. No further details were given. The conflict between the two statements could not immediately be reconciled.

Torn by civil conflict since 2011, Libya is divided between two rival governments, each backed by international patrons and numerous armed militias on the ground. Libya's Western government is based in the capital Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and is headed by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

A UN-brokered process installed an interim government, with Dbeibah at its head, in early 2021 with the aim of guiding the country to elections later that year.

The elections weren’t held following disagreements over several key issues, including the eligibility for presidential candidacy.

Bashagha, a former interior minister and air force pilot, was appointed prime minister of the east-based government by the House of Representatives in February 2022.

Months after his appointment, he tried to seat his government in the capital, arriving in Tripoli with a number of his Cabinet ministers. Clashes soon broke out between rival militias, forcing Bashagha to retreat to the city of Sirte.

While the precise reason for Bashagha’s removal remains unannounced, Jalel Harchaoui, a Libya specialist and associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, believes the suspended premier may have out-served his use to Khalifa Hafter, commander of the Libyan National Army.

Hafar and his family are seeking more influence in Tripoli and have been engaging in regular talks with Dbeibah’s nephew along with militia leaders from the west, Harchaoui said.

The UN’s special representative to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, unveiled a new initiative in late February aiming to usher the divided country to the ballot box before the end of 2023.

Both parliaments have agreed upon a joint committee to draft electoral law for the vote, however, progress has since slowed.

#2  One of the tells during the 2016-2018 infiltration of twitter by intelligence agencies was the purge of LNA from the platform. The EU supported gov't, the current govt, it is with those people that the slave markets returned, and it was the LNA folks that were leaking the pics of the modern slaves of Libya.

US launches criminal cases involving flow of technology to Iran, Russia and China
The US Justice Department announced a series of criminal cases tracing the illegal flow of sensitive technology, including Apple’s software code for self-driving cars and materials used for missiles, to foreign adversaries like Russia, China and Iran.

Some of the alleged theft highlighted by the department dates back several years, but US officials are drawing attention to the collection of cases now to highlight the work of a task force created this year to disrupt the transfer of goods to foreign countries.

"We are committed to doing all we can to prevent these advanced tools from falling into the hands of adversaries who wield them in a way that threatens not only our national security but democratic values everywhere," says Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen, who heads the Justice Department’s national security division.

Scholar Tariq Ramadan goes on rape trial in Geneva
[Dawn] The Swiss Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan
...no doubt that’s a typo, when what is meant is Islamist scholar, as he most eruditely alternates between taqqiya and apologetics...
went on trial at a Geneva criminal court on Monday charged with "rape and sexual coercion", allegations which the former Oxford University professor denies.

Ramadan arrived at the Geneva courthouse, where security had been visibly boosted as members of the public streamed in to watch the highly anticipated trial.

The Swiss complainant, who says she has faced threats and therefore wishes to be known under the assumed name of "Brigitte" during the trial, was in her 40s at the time of the alleged attack, which dates back almost 15 years.

Ramadan, 60, is accused of having subjected her to brutal sexual acts accompanied by beatings and insults on the evening of Oct 28, 2008, in a Geneva hotel room. Brigitte filed a complaint with the Geneva courts in April 2018.

The Swiss intellectual, a charismatic yet controversial figure in European Islam, could face two to 10 years in prison if convicted. One of his French lawyers, Philippe Ohayon, declined to comment ahead of the trial, which is expected to last two to three days.

The verdict will be delivered on May 24, the Geneva courts said, and Ramadan will be able to appeal if convicted.

#3  Background: Tariq's father was Said Ramadan, early Muslim Brotherhood bigwig. In 1961 he founded the Islamic Center of Geneva. The following year he wrote the constitution of the Muslim World League, founded in Saudi Arabia. In 1963 he helps found the Islamic Society of Germany and served as President through 1968. He is then the spur behind the construction of various Islamic Cultural Centers: (Belgium 1969, funded by Saudi Arabia).
1963 was a seminal moment in the history of the Muslim Brotherhood in the USA with the founding of the Muslim Students Association (MSA-USA) in January 1963. Created by students at the University of Illinois, it was called, "a collaborative effort of Ikhwan members from Egypt, Iraq, Syria and the Sudan."
The Munich mosque served as cultural center and base of operation for Said Ramadan. It was long considered the headquarters of the Ikhwan in Europe (for both Ramadan, father and radical son). In the 1980s its operation was moved to Markfield, Leicester, U.K.
Given Tariq Ramadan's activity in Europe,, he is known as a particularly dangerous individual. He has skirted the law in many countries and was (and probably still is) prohibited from visiting the USA.

14 to be tried over beheading of French teacher who showed Prophet Mohammed pics
[IsraelTimes] A total of 14 people are set to face trial in La Belle France over the beheading of a teacher by an Islamist bully boy in 2020, a crime that shocked the country, legal documents obtained by AFP show.

The most serious charges — complicity in a terrorist murder — are being pressed against two friends of the Chechen refugee who murdered teacher Samuel Paty after he showed pictures of the Prophet Mohammed to his pupils, the case documents reveal.

The killer, 18-year-old Abdullakh Anzorov,
...the vicious petty criminal whose asylum request had just been renewed for another decade, he cut off the head of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine school teacher Samuel Paty for holding a classroom discussion on freedom of thought with reference to the Mohammed cartoons. Several Muslim parents objected as a matter of principle, though their children had been invited to absent themselves to protect their delicate sensibilities. A number of Mr Anzorov’s friends and relations were thereafter arrested, several of whom were on jihadi watch lists, and it was discovered that he shared the video he’d made of the grisly murder with ISIS supporters among his acquaintance and on ISIS websites, including an unnamed Russian-speaker in Idlib, suggesting he was another highly connected lone wolf...
was rubbed out by police at the scene in the Gay Paree suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine.

Prosecutors believe his friends, Azim Epsirkhanov and Naim Boudaoud, accompanied Anzorov to buy a knife and Boudaoud traveled with him to the school.

Another six adults will be tried for associating with terrorists, including the father of a girl at Paty’s school,
...Brahim Chnina, who may or may not have a half sister who emigrated to ISIS in Syria in 2014, but who definitely has connected friends...
an Islamic preacher, as well as a Moslem convert in contact with Anzorov via Twitter.

Six teenagers will be brought before children’s courts for allegedly undertaking surveillance around the school and identifying Paty for his killer.
...a service for which Mr. Ansarov paid the usual thirty pieces of silver, which converts to €300 or so.

White House Extends National Emergency Declaration for Stabilization of Iraq
[Shafaq News] In a message to Congress, the White House has declared the continuation of the national emergency concerning the stabilization of Iraq. This announcement under Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act highlights the ongoing challenges facing Iraq's reconstruction, peace, and security.

The national emergency initially declared in Executive Order 13303 on May 22, 2003, has been modified and relied upon for additional actions in subsequent executive orders. These include Executive Orders 13290, 13315, 13350, 13364, 13438, and 13668, all contributing to the stabilization efforts in Iraq.

Despite progress made, the White House recognizes that obstacles persist in the orderly reconstruction of Iraq and the development of its political, administrative, and economic institutions. These challenges pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to both the national security and foreign policy of the United States.

By extending the national emergency, the White House emphasizes its commitment to supporting Iraq's stabilization and maintaining peace and security. This decision allows the continuation of necessary measures to address the ongoing threats and ensure the progress made is sustained.

The declaration's extension beyond May 22, 2023, reinforces the administration's determination to confront these challenges and work towards a stable and prosperous Iraq. The United States actively supports Iraq's efforts to achieve long-term stability and self-reliance.

The decision to extend the national emergency underscores the complexity and importance of the situation in Iraq. Moreover, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to address the region's evolving needs and contribute to a more secure and prosperous future for Iraq and its people.

Earlier, the US ambassador to Baghdad, Alina L. Romanowski, underlined the United States' commitment to Iraq, its strategic importance on the region, and its support for stability and security in Iraq as a means to foster economic growth and international engagement.

In an interview with Sky News Arabia, she stated that the US did not intend to leave the region. Instead, she highlighted the longstanding relations between the two countries in various fields, including politics, economy, culture, and education.

Ambassador Romanowski referred to US President Joe The Big Guy Biden

Regardless of the prime minister's relationship with gangs, she emphasized that the primary goal should be ensuring stability and security in Iraq, a plan entrusted to the prime minister.

The US Ambassador emphasized that Iraq's stability would benefit the United States and the international community as a whole. In addition, peace and security would foster business opportunities and attract more investments, as seen by the thriving presence of US companies and the interest of Iraqi businessmen and women in attracting further investment.

India-Pakistan
Has Haji Salim Replaced Dawood Ibrahim As The New Drug Lord In Pakistan?
[OneIndia] The Indian agencies are keeping a close tab on one Haji Salim alias Haji Ali after his name had cropped in a drug investigation.

Investigations have shown that Salim has been the main supplier of drugs to India since the year 20156.
[sic]
A resident of Afghanistan, Salim is settled in Pakistain and runs his empire from there. All the major drug busts in India since the year 2016 have his links, an official tells OneIndia.

Earlier, Salim was handling the drug trade along the Afghanistan-Pakistain border, but over the years he has spread his tentacles to other countries, the official cited above said. What the agencies are trying to ascertain is whether Salim has replaced Dawood Ibrahim as the main drug supplier to India or is working under the notorious don, who is wanted in scores of cases in India.

If one notices the massive drug busts that have happened in India, it has all been through the sea route. Salim is said to have built his network and has extensively used the sea route to push drugs into India.

It was around four years back that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was given information about Salim by the National Security Council Secretariat.

While his links with Dawood is unclear, his connection with the ISI is a well known fact. The Indian agencies had launched 'Operation Samudragupta' to stop drug smuggling from Pakistain and Afghanistan into India. Thanks to multiple operations launched by the Indian agencies, several drug consignments have been busted. The drug lords usually use the Gujarat

coast to get drugs into the country. From here it makes its way to Mumbai following which it is distributed across the country.

#1  Salim could not operate without the approval of the Pakistan military ISI. The ISI has been involved in the Afghan drug trade for more than a half-century.

AJK man strays across LoC, detained by Indian army
[Dawn] A 25 years old mentally unstable resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
(AJK), who had gone missing the other day, had reportedly landed in detention across the Line of Control (LoC), Indian media reported on Monday.

However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
an official at Nakyal cop shoppe in Kotli district told Dawn that immediately the police were not in a position to confirm that Usman Zulfiqar of Karela Mahjan village had been strayed into the India-occupied territory or had been whisked away by the Indian army from the unmarked dividing line.

"Last night, a local employee of the forest department turned up at the cop shoppe and told us that his non compos son Usman had not returned home since evening following which we entered his complaint as a case of disappearance," said official Amjad Hussain at Nakyal cop shoppe.

"It’s now that we are being told about reports in [a section of] Indian media that he has been detained after crossing the LoC. But we are yet to confirm it from independent sources," he added.

According to a report in an Indian Kashmire based news portal, Indian troops had nabbed an "intruder" while he was trying to "infiltrate" from Tarkundi area in Rajouri district.

Iraq
Anfal survivors recount genocide 35 years on
[Rudaw] For the second year in a row, a number of relatives of Anfal victims and Anfal survivors themselves visited the mass graves and Nugra Salman castle, a remote prison fortress in southern Iraq. A photography exhibition dedicated to the victims was also opened this year.

Marking a start in 1986, the Anfal campaign killed more than 182,000 Kurds in two years of slaughter by then-president Saddam Hussein’s Baathist regime. On April 14, 1988, the campaign began in the Garmiyan area in the south of the Kurdistan Region.

The exhibition featured photographs of a significant number of children who were affected by the Anfal campaign.

"We have tried to turn Nugra Salman castle, where thousands of Kurds were imprisoned and some of them later massacred, into a permanent museum to remain as a historical evidence," Srwa Mohammed, a member of the Iraqi parliament, told Rudaw.

Nugra Salman is a former prison fortress in the deserts of Muthanna province in southern Iraq. It served as a concentration camp during the former Iraqi Baathist regime’s Anfal campaign.

Iraq’s Supreme Court recognized Anfal as a crime against humanity and war in 2008. Years later, very little has been done for the survivors or the families of victims of Anfal.

In addition to the hundreds of thousands killed, around 4,500 villages in the Kurdistan Region were demolished during the Anfal campaign.

"The aim of opening this exhibition is to show that innocent Kurdish children of no crimes and of different ages were killed during the Anfal campaign, just because they were Kurds," researcher Simko Sabir said.

"There were children who were only one day old and were massacred," he added.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
France seeks arrest of Leb central bank chief
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

[An Nahar] A French investigating magistrate on Tuesday issued an international arrest warrant for Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
's central bank chief Riad Salameh, a source close to the case said.

Salameh earlier failed to appear for questioning by French Sherlocks who suspect him of using fraud to amass sizeable assets across Europe.

A European judicial team from La Belle France, Germany and Luxembourg is conducting a corruption probe into an array of financial crimes, including illicit enrichment and alleged laundering of $330 million, implicating Salameh.

Salameh, 72, who has held his post for almost 30 years, has repeatedly denied all allegations against him. He has insisted that his wealth comes from his previous job as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch, inherited properties, and investments.

Iran execution rate increased by 83 percent in 2022: Amnesty
[Rudaw] The rate of executions carried out in Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
increased by 83 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year, making it the country with the second highest rate of known executions during that year, according to the annual report from Amnesia Amnesty International.

Iran executed at least 576 people last year, a significant increase from 314 in 2021, according to Amnesty who attributed the spike to the growing number of death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
s carried out against suspects of murder and drug-related charges.

"Recorded executions [in Iran] for murder had risen sharply by 75% from 159 in 2021 to 279 in 2022; and rose significantly for drug-related offences by 93% from 132 in 2021 to 255 in 2022," read the report from human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
monitor on Tuesday.

The death sentence was carried out against at least 12 women in the Islamic republic, and at least five suspects who were charged for crimes which occurred when they were below the age of 18. At least two were executed for their involvement in September’s nationwide protests. There was also two recorded cases of public executions in the country.

Iran accounted for 70 percent of the executions carried out in the Middle East and North Africa in 2022, according to Amnesty.

"The Iranian authorities continued to use the death penalty
as a tool of political repression and to disproportionately execute members of ethnic minorities as part of the long-term, entrenched discrimination and repression of these groups."

The same report also confirmed 11 executions in Iraq during 2022, a noticeable decrease from 17 in the previous year. The number of death sentences issued in the country also dropped significantly, going from 91 in 2021 to 41 in 2022.

The rights watchdog said that Iran and Iraq were both among countries where the death sentence was carried out "after proceedings that did not meet international fair trial standards," adding that torture and ill-treatment was used to obtain "confessions" in Iran.

Agnès Callamard, Amnesia Amnesty International’s Secretary General, called on the states with the highest rates of execution -which included Iran- to "catch up with the times, protect human rights, and execute justice rather than people."

UN human rights chief Volker Turk last week said that Iran had executed at least 209 people since the start of 2023, with an average rate of over 10 people each week.

Most of those who are executed in Iran are charged based on confessions, but these confession videos are common in the country and are frequently condemned by rights groups who say they are often obtained under duress.

Since the rise of ISIS in 2014, thousands of people have been detained across Iraq for suspected links to terrorist groups, including ISIS, while hundreds have been executed. Amnesia Amnesty International in March reported that at least 20 death sentences have been handed down since Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani assumed office in October.
