Sea level rise 'is accelerating' - Bush Blamed.
Global sea levels could rise by about 30cm during this century if current trends continue, a study warns. Australian researchers found that sea levels rose by 19.5cm between 1870 and 2004, with accelerated rates in the final 50 years of that period.

The research, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, used data from tide gauges around the world. The findings fit within predictions made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC's Third Assessment Report, published in 2001, projected that the global average sea level would rise by between 9 and 88cm between 1990 and 2100. In an attempt to reduce the scale of uncertainty in this projection, the Australian researchers have analysed tidal records dating back to 1870. The data was obtained from locations throughout the globe, although the number of tidal gauges increased and their locations changed over the 130-year period. These records show that the sea level has risen, and suggest that the rate of rise is increasing.

Over the entire period from 1870 the average rate of rise was 1.44mm per year. Over the 20th Century it averaged 1.7mm per year; while the figure for the period since 1950 is 1.75mm per year. Although climate models predict that sea level rise should have accelerated, the scientists behind this study say they are the first to verify the trend using historical data. Floods and surges Melting ice on Antarctica is a cause of sea level rise If the acceleration continues at the current rate, the scientists warn that sea levels could rise during this century by between 28 and 34cm.

Dr John Church, a scientist with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation based in Tasmania and an author of the study, said that higher sea levels could have grave effects on some areas. "It means there will be increased flooding of low-lying areas when there are storm surges," he told the Associated Press. "It means increased coastal erosion on sandy beaches; we're going to see increased flooding on island nations."

There is now a consensus among climate scientists that rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide are the major factor behind rising temperatures. Increased temperatures can lead to higher sea-levels through several mechanisms including the melting of glaciers and thermal expansion of sea water. Through the 1997 Kyoto protocol, industrialised countries have committed to cut their combined emissions to 5% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012. But the US and Australia have withdrawn from the treaty. Dr Church urged: "We do have to reduce our emissions but we also have to recognise climate change is happening, and we have to adapt as well."

#4  Look at a map of sea levels 15,000 years ago and it's astonishing how much land has been lost to rising sea levels. Archeologists refer to the areas now under water as countries, such as Doggerland, which is the southern half of what is now the North Sea.

7,500 years ago the Black Sea was dry land then

It was a catastrophic event. Every day for two years, 42 cubic km of sea water cut through the narrow channel now known as the Bosporus, and plunged into the lake — more than 200 times the flow over Niagara Falls. Every day the lake level rose 15 cm. Every day the water spread another kilometer, forcing people and animals to flee or drown, killing freshwater fish and plants by the ton and inundating forests and villages.

Africa Subsaharan
Zimbabwe elite said to be raiding AIDS drugs.
TOP officials of President Robert Mugabe’s government are using their positions to access antiretroviral drugs meant for the poor, according to Zimonline, an independent internet news site that focuses on Zimbabwe.

Zimonline’s sources in Zimbabwe say officials intercept the drugs from donors or those purchased by the government’s National AIDS Council before they are distributed to state hospitals. The website, which operates from SA, said it had a list of some of the names of the government and Zanu (PF) officials involved in the drugs scam, but for legal reasons could not reveal them.

It said the list included cabinet ministers, members of Zanu (PF)’s politburo committee, police and military officials as well as some close relatives and friends of the politicians and government officials. “The (AIDS council) just hands over the drugs (to top officials). It has become so normal it is kind of semi-officialised,” said one source, who refused to be named for fear of reprisals.

The source told Zimonline that of the few antiretrovirals that had been received, most had been snapped up by powerful government and army officials or by those who were connected to the ruling elite. Zimbabwean Health Minister David Parirenyatwa, under whose portfolio the National AIDS Council falls, insisted the scheme was run in a transparent manner. “I am aware that there are concerns that senior government officials are abusing our free antiretroviral programme, but the allegations are wrong,” he said.
"Lies! All lies!"
My guess would be Zimonline will soon fold due to "financial difficulties" brought about by previous colonial rule.

Indian Ocean island epidemic hits 50,000
Reunion is a French island off the coast of southeast Africa. It's a popular vacation destination for Europeans, and is considerably more prosperous and stable than the rest of Africa.
PARIS - Some 50,000 people on France’s Indian Ocean island of Reunion have been hit by an epidemic of a crippling mosquito-borne disease that has no known cure, health authorities said Thursday. Doctors have recorded 45,000 new cases of “chikungunya” since mid-December, when the epidemic started to gather pace, Philippe Renault, a specialist with a regional epidemiologal cell, told a press conference. The previous toll, given last Friday, had stood at 30,000.

Chikungunya is Swahili for “that which bends up” and refers to the stooped posture of those afflicted by the non-fatal but extremely painful disease for which there is no known vaccine or cure. It is characterised by high fever and severe rashes, and while non-fatal in itself and most people eventually recover, it can provide opportunities for other diseases to set in.

France last week drafted 400 extra troops to help fight the mosquitoes that have been spreading the disease across Reunion since March last year. The volcanic island east of Madagascar, a French overseas department with a population of 760,000, has earmarked 600,000 euros (720,000 dollars) to fight the outbreak.

Authorities in Madagascar also fear the disease may have reached their island.

#1  The mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus is an ongoing problem in Réunion, causing muscle pain and fever. More than 30,000 islanders have been affected since early 2005. The virus is not life-threatening but has no vaccine. Travellers should be aware that French troops will be spraying the whole island during February to try to cull mosquito numbers.

So all you tourists stay away!

Now isn't that convenient timing...

Saudi Woman Continues Driving in Northern VA After 20 Years Despite the Odds
/01/2006
By Aid bin Marzuk

Jeddah, Asharq Al-Awsat - In the desert near this western Saudi city, lives a woman named Ghalia, aged 60, in severe natural conditions that make her an exception to the rule. She competes with men in order to enable her family to lead a respectable life, just like those who create a house from a sticks and a palace from stone.

Ghalia has been driving for more than twenty years. She tells the story of a difficult life and continues to labor until this day. Her wrinkly face tells the observer that there is more than life than mere subsistence. Speaking about her driving, Ghalia says, “I did not encounter any opposition but no one encouraged me. My support came from within.” Necessity made her break all the barriers and stand up for herself. Ghalia rejected inequality and the dominance of men. Instead, she inaugurated an eternal partnership.

Reminiscing about the first car she ever drove, Ghalia said, “That was a very long time ago. As far as I remember it was a 1979 model Jeep.” Given the mountainous terrain and sand dunes she lives in, Ghalia prefers a four-wheel drive Jeep. “I drive to the nearby villages and the fields to visit my women friends and in order to buy and sell”. However, she quickly added she avoids driving in places where the security services can be found. Ghalia has never driven a car on a paved road. It is because, “I do not have a license”, she says jokingly.

Ghalia can easily change tires in case of a puncture but requires additional support to repair mechanical failures. She strenuously denies claims by other men that she carries weapons. “I have never carried weapons. The location is safe given the proximity of the villages I drive to.” She does not recall any incidents cause by her driving.

Living with her brother and her family, Ghalia never married. Her father died when she was young. She decries the difficulty of everyday life; “We lack a regular income. We rely on selling and buying goats and cows. Work is sometimes hard. Driving has saved me time and effort. We, the older generation, work for them,” she said, pointing towards her young nephews and nieces.

Ghalia understands the desire for women to drive. They, like her, have needs. In meetings with other women, she often gets asked about driving. Ghalia always answers confidently. When asked about whether women can drive in the city, Ghalia hesitates and says, “No, this will never happen.” After a short period of silence, she added, “Generally speaking, women are weak and traffic accidents are many. Women want to drive in cities and populated areas should respect traffic laws and not distance themselves from their homes as this is safer”, she advised.

On the subject of men, Ghalia criticized their view of women who drove and described it as unfounded suspicion. Men do not trust women and belittle their abilities. The relation between the two sexes was one of guardianship, she said.

For her part, Ghalia continues to reject customs and chooses to lead her life as she pleases. Her story on that barren land continues to unfold.

You GO Ghalia!

Caribbean-Latin America
Drug-smuggling puppies arrested
EFL.
A two-year investigation into a Colombian heroin ring netted more than 65 pounds of drugs, resulted in the arrests of more than 20 people and saved the lives of some drug-smuggling Labrador retrievers, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said Wednesday. Ten wayward pups were found during a raid on a Colombian farm in 2005, and six of them were carrying more than 6.6 pounds of liquid heroin in their stomachs, said DEA spokesman Rusty Payne. In the case of the puppies found during the 2005 raid, the dogs' bellies had been cut open, and heroin packets were stitched into their stomachs, Payne said. The pups, mostly purebred Labrador retrievers, were sewn back up and prepared for shipment to the United States, he added.

"The organization's outrageous and heinous smuggling method of implanting heroin inside puppies is a true indication of the extent that drug dealers go to make their profit," said Special Agent in Charge John Gilbride in a written statement.

Though the 10 dogs were rescued before being shipped, it wasn't enough to save all of their lives. "Three of the six died of infection when the drugs were removed," Payne said, adding that four other puppies "were going to be used and obviously were saved."

Payne said the DEA did not announce its find after the raid because the investigation was still ongoing, but Wednesday, the two-year probe yielded 18 search warrants in six Colombian cities and landed the latest of 21 arrests, all Colombian nationals. Another arrest was made during the investigation in North Carolina, said DEA spokeswoman Erin Mulvey.
Grrrrrrrrr.

Speaking during a visit to Brazil, Mr Rumsfeld said he could not see what Venezuela would do with the weapons. He added he personally hoped the purchase would not go ahead.

Relations between the two countries have been tense since Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez accused the US of trying to kill him. Washington has suggested the rifles could end up in the hands of the Colombian rebel group Farc - a claim rejected by Venezuela.

A senior US defence official told the Associated Press news agency the weapons were expected to arrive in a few months' time.

#1  ...Mr Rumsfeld said he could not see what Venezuela would do with the weapons.

Did he deliver that line with a straight face?

#2  Personally, I'd be piling up those captured in Iraq and begin airdropping them over Venezula at night via a stealth. Have people waking up in the morning with loads of AK-47s around. Gifts for everyone. Not just the chosen 100K of El Hugo.

#4  Almost forgot, strap 200 rounds to each rifle dropped. Make the ammo packs weatherproof.

Julian Bond: GOP 'Nazi'; Rice, Powell 'Tokens'; Judges 'Taliban', etc.
Civil rights activist and NAACP Chairman Julian Bond delivered a blistering partisan speech at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina last night, equating the Republican Party with the Nazi Party and characterizing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her predecessor, Colin Powell, as "tokens."

"The Republican Party would have the American flag and the swastika flying side by side," he charged.

Calling President Bush a liar, Bond told the audience at the historically black institution that this White House's lies are more serious than the lies of his predecessor's because Clinton's lies didn't kill people.

"We now find ourselves refighting old battles we thought we had already won," he said. "We have to fight discrimination whenever it raises its ugly head."

He referred to former Attorney General John Ashcroft as J. Edgar Ashcroft. He compared Bush's judicial nominees to the Taliban.

The talk so infuriated at least one black family in attendance among the 900 in the auditorium that they got up in walked out in protest.

"He went on and on name calling," said Lee Wilson. "I walked out in the middle of his speech with my wife and three kids"

The harsh partisan rhetoric from Bond should not have surprised anyone who has followed him in recent years.

In July 2001, Bond said, "[Bush] has selected nominees from the Taliban wing of American politics, appeased the wretched appetites of the extreme right wing, and chosen Cabinet officials whose devotion to the Confederacy is nearly canine in its uncritical affection."

#4  Julian Bond? Wasn't he the voice of reason in that band of hustlers and race pimps? Makes you wonder if derangement is caused by some sort of transmittable virus. I hope the ghost of Martin Luther King Jr. comes back and kicks all their asses.

I'm hearin' the fear of irrelevancy. These statements sound both scared and tired at the same time. I think the NAACP and The Dems really need to try a new playbook. But, hey, thass just me..

#7  wow! I wonder why W has passed over speaking to teh NAACP every year now, choosing instead to speak to black groups looking forward and making something of themselves and their families. Bond is a sick ol racist bigot - just the kind he opposed in a previously admirable life. His comments not drawing immediate condemnation from the usual grievance and outrage™ groups shows how sincere they are in their ideals. This made Drudge - they won't be able to hush it up - he's toast

Greenpeace shifts focus to pirate fishing catching.
CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Greenpeace activists will shift their focus to protest against pirate fishing off Africa's west coast following two months battling Japanese whalers, the group said on Wednesday.

The activist group's two ships limped into Cape Town on Wednesday, the crew exhausted and starving, and headed for R&R on Long street, after spending 73 days in the icy, gray Southern Ocean to protest against whale hunting when they say the whales suffer a gruesome death, as are most deaths.

Greenpeace said it now planned to expose illegal fishing as part of a year-long campaign to save the world's oceans. "The situation with the whales is not unique," said Mike Townsley, communications director for the organization. "Over 90 percent of the world's big fish are now gone and the world's most sophisticated and largest fleets are fighting over smaller and smaller fish stocks," he told reporters.

The Arctic Sunrise and Esperanza will set sail for the seas off Africa's west coast -- after a month break for repairs and re-stocking of Castle to confront the pirate fishing ships. By some estimates around 75 percent of the world's fisheries have been fished to their limits and west Africa's coast is seen as a target for pirates as the region's countries have few resources except for pirateering to protect marine life or enforce regulations at sea.

Greenpeace also intends to move its anti-whaling campaign from the Antarctic seas to the shopfloor. It will target companies like Halliburton who its says profit from whale deaths and will urge customers to boycott those companies' products. The six-ship Japanese fleet including the Mutsu, Nagato, and Yamato, and Musahsi have been in the Southern Ocean, a whale sanctuary, since December to meet its quota of about 900 minke whales -- double last season's catch. Norway and Iceland also hunt whales.

Japan abandoned commercial whaling in 1986, in line with an international moratorium, but began catching whales again the next year for what it says is sperm whale sushi scientific research. Critics say the meat still ends up in fish markets and restaurant plates.

#1  I'm hearing something like a transmission line whine, it sounds like "This isn't working, nobody's paying attention to us, it's too cold in the Ocean, we aren't getting anywhere" It's faded out now, just a rising and falling whine like a spoiled child.
