RIP Edith Shain, Nurse in V-J Day kiss photo
A nurse famously photographed being kissed by an American sailor in New York's Times Square in 1945 to celebrate the end of World War Two has died at the age of 91, her family said on Tuesday.

The V-J Day picture of the white-clad Edith Shain by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured an epic moment in U.S. history and became an iconic image marking the end of the war after being published in Life magazine.

The identity of the nurse in the photograph was not known until the late 1970s when Shain wrote to the photographer saying that she was the woman in the picture taken on August 14 at a time when she had been working at Doctor's Hospital in New York City.

The identity of the sailor remains disputed and unresolved.

From then on the photograph also made its mark on Shain's life as the fame she garnered led to invites to war related events such a wreath layings, parades and other memorial events.

"My mom was always willing take on new challenges and caring for the World War II veterans energized her to take another chance to make a difference," her son Justin Decker said in a statement.

Shain, who died at her home in Los Angeles on Sunday, leaves behind three sons, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Violence kills three in Burundi
Amid a tense security climate ahead of the presidential election in Burundi, violent attacks have left three people dead and several others injured.
Not killers, or murderers, but that damned violence killed 'em...
"A grenade exploded in a bar in Bujumbura's Bwiza neighborhood, killing one and wounding six," Burundian police spokesman Pierre Chanel Ntarabagany said.
I'm not real big on gun control, but grenade control sounds pretty reasonable.
Grenades don't kill people, violence kills people ...
"Another was hurled at a home in Nyabiraba... killing one and wounding two," he added according to AFP.

The attacks followed the Monday assassination of the president of Burundi's Youth League ruling party by unknown gunmen.

Ntarabagany also noted that around 30 people were injured in similar attacks over the past weekend.

The Political and security atmosphere in Burundi has been tense since local polls were held in May 24.

Burundian opposition parties accuse President Pierre Nkurunziza's ruling party of vote rigging, saying they would boycott the country's June 28 presidential poll.

Kimmie Blamed for N.Korea's Foolish World Cup Tactics
Next time don't phone it in ...
After the complete rout of North Korea by Portugal on Monday in their second match of the World Cup against Portugal, some observers have seized on the opportunity to blame North Korean leader Kim Jong-il personally.

The license was provided by a claim by the team's manager Kim Jong-hun that the dictator "gives regular tactical advice during matches using mobile phones that are not visible to the naked eye." The manager added the fantasy device was invented by Kim Jong-il himself.

"Given the way the North Korean regime works, a football coach can't just mention Kim Jong-il's name and talk about him as he likes," a South Korean official said. "The invisible-mobile-phone part may be silly, but it's probably true that Kim Jong-il's orders are delivered to the coach."

A source who knows Kim Jong-hun's playing style very well said that the match against Portugal was not played in a way the North Korean coach wanted and that he must have been pressured from someone outside. "Kim Jong-hun, who is composed and laid-back, adheres to defense-oriented tactics since he was formerly a defender, but North Korea played an unreasonable offense-oriented tactics at the time when the gap was widening," the source said.
Of course, at some point you have to try and score. If you're down 2 or 3 goals you have to get one of your own, and to do that you risk going down even further.
It appears that North Korea had high hopes of the game, which it broadcast live for the first time in its history. Kim Yong-hyun, a professor at Dongguk University, said, "The North Korean leadership seems to have wanted to consolidate its hold and look for ways to turn the tables through a victory in the World Cup as it is struggling both economically and diplomatically."

Another government official said, "The brave display of discipline against Brazil on June 16 raised the bar for the North Korean team and instilled extravagant hopes in people."

The atmosphere in the North is said to be subdued after the rout. Kim Sung-min, who heads radio channel Free North Korea Radio, said, "We contacted North Koreans, and they said that they feel let down and upset. There are people who said they were so upset that they drank themselves senseless and that they can never forgive the players."

YJCMTSU - Australian Men Shoot Each Other 'To See If It Hurts'
TWO Victorian men required surgery to remove slug pellets from their backsides after playfully shooting each other with an air rifle to see whether it would hurt.
Survey says - Yes
The 34-year-old mates were enjoying a Sunday afternoon beer drinking session when they decided to shoot one another with an air rifle to see whether it would penetrate their skin or cause pain, Victoria Police said.
Gee, alcohol was involved. Now who would have predicted that?
The men, from the Grampians region in Victoria's west, took it in turns to shoot each other in the backside and the leg about 5.30pm (AEST) on Sunday. They thought they were fine but were admitted to hospital two days later requiring surgery to remove slug pellets from their rear ends and legs, police said.
"Crikey, that stings!"
The men will be interviewed by police at a later date when their medical condition improves, police said.
And they can sit during the interview
One man will have his firearm licence withdrawn and his firearms confiscated after the incident.

Federal Gov't Halts Sand Berm Dredging in LA
NEW ORLEANS -- The federal government is shutting down the dredging that was being done to create protective sand berms in the Gulf of Mexico.
It's almost as if the Feds want to use the oil leak for some other reason ...
The berms are meant to protect the Louisiana coastline from oil. But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department has concerns about where the dredging is being done.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, who was one of the most vocal advocates of the dredging plan, has sent a letter to President Barack Obama, pleading for the work to continue. Nungesser said the government has asked crews to move the dredging site two more miles farther off the coastline.

"Once again, our government resource agencies, which are intended to protect us, are now leaving us vulnerable to the destruction of our coastline and marshes by the impending oil," Nungesser wrote to Obama. "Furthermore, with the threat of hurricanes or tropical storms, we are being put at an increased risk for devastation to our area from the intrusion of oil.

Nungesser has asked for the dredging to continue for the next seven days, the amount of time it would take to move the dredging operations two miles and out resume work.

Work is scheduled to halt at midnight Wednesday.

#5  Ban on drilling? Halt on dredging? It seems as if the administration is setting the stage for "cap and trade."

Last night Glenn Beck had an interesting analysis. He said $2 billion was given or loaned to PetroBrazil for deep off-shore drilling ~ 14,000 feet. Thirty-three oil rigs have been idled by the moratorium on drilling. He says these rigs can't be idled for long before they have to be leased (to other countries or companies). Beck outlined a murky witches brew of organizations of which George Soros was heavily involved in PetroBrazil, green organizations, and far left organizations. Soros invested heavily in PetroBrazil just before the moratorium was declared. Soros is supposed to be in line to lease these rigs. Maybe Beck is conspiratorial in his analysis but maybe there is truth to his claims also.

LHC overturns Javed Hashmi's treason sentence
[Dawn] The Rawalpindi bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday overturned the conviction against PML-N leader Javed Hashmi in a treason case.

Hashmi had filed a plea in the court regarding the overturning of the conviction.

He was acquitted as no concrete evidence was available to suggest his involvement in any act of treason, Justice Waqar Hasan Mir said.

The case against Hashmi was registered in 2003 after he made a speech against former president Pervez Musharraf in the parliament.

Hashmi was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in 2004 but was released on bail in 2007, after serving three years and nine months in prison.

Thousands mourn slain Red Shirt gen.
Over tens of thousands of mourners have attended the cremation ceremony of a Thai Red Shirt general, who was assassinated at the height of demonstrations in Bangkok.

Major General Khattiya Sawasdiphol, who was an unofficial security adviser to the Red Shirts, was shot in the head while being interviewed by a foreign reporter earlier in May.

The ceremony provided an opportunity for the first gathering of the Red Shirts, since the Thai government quashed their protests in May.

"The funeral is a time for mourning, but it's also a time to show solidarity," AFP quoted a protest leader as saying.

Bangkok is currently under emergency law, which prohibits public gatherings of more than five people.

However, the 800 police officers supervising the ceremony did not try to stop the crowd from paying their respect.

Thai opposition has called for an international group to investigate deadly clashes which took place last month between troops and Red Shirt protesters. At least 89 people were killed and close to 1,900 were injured.

The Red Shirts had been campaigning for new elections, hoping to push the current government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva out.

The opposition mainly consists of supporters of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006.

Thaksin is currently living in exile in order to avoid detention. However, the former Thai prime minister remains popular among the rural poor.

Unofficial results from the Dodge County Clerk's Office showed voters approving the measure 57 percent to 43 percent. With approximately 45 percent voter turnout, 3,906 ballots were cast in favor of the ordinance and 2,908 against. Sixteen precincts voted for the ordinance while voters in four precincts were opposed.

"The people have spoken," State Sen. Charlie Janssen said.
