1995: OJ Simpson verdict: 'Not guilty'

#2  He was a product of his "professional" environment, fame, and the media. Modern day gladiators, enslaved to drugs and trained in the destruction of their fellow, whilst cheered on by gambling, drunken revelers in massive coloseums built by taxes. It is no longer a game but a device of revenue sans pillared mansions and the lash.

#3  I think that's a bit harsh, Besoeker. Lots of people who never played in the NFL have committed murder and gotten away with it. Simpson went off the rails but most of them don't and when they do the law applies equally to them. Michael Vick, as you may recall, went to jail for his participation in dog fighting. Football is a sport like any other. Unlike many of the other sports it is big and it is rich but this is a big, rich country. It is a violent sport but a lot of rules have been enacted to protect the players from some of the nastier things that they might otherwise do to each other. In fact, the NFL has done a lot more to clean itself than a lot of other professional sports leagues. The players take regular drug tests and they are punished if those test results are positive. What would you rather watch when you turn on the television? Glee? Please, please don't take televised football games away from me.

Caribbean-Latin America
Nothing and No One would Stop Bolivarian Revolution: Chavez
(Prensa Latina) Bolivarian President, Hugo Chavez, said that nothing and no one would stop Bolivarian Revolution, a process of changes beginning more than a decade ago.

Chavez called for deepening the transformations audaciously undertaken in 1999, but on more detail principles pf planning and scientific nature.

We must create conditions to accelerate the expansion of socialism and to replace capitalism with the new model, he insisted.

During a meeting held yesterday with representatives elected by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Chavez urged the organization's members to work tirelessly with a view to the 2012 presidential election.

Referring to the Venezuelan parliament's new composition, who will take office in January 2011, he asserted that it will enact laws much more revolutionary than the current National Assembly

He reiterated that until then the legislature will continue to legislate according to the needs of society.

During his speech, broadcasted live on television, he called to reflect on the results of the elections on September 26, where the Socialists won 60 percent of parliamentary seats.

It's a landslide, President Chavez said; however, we have to criticize in depth to improve and recover where we lost where we became wake.

The officer called for improving self-criticism within the ranks of the organization with more than seven million members.

Massive street brawl in Adelaide after first Miss Africa beauty pageant
Australian multi-culturism in action.
FOUR men suffered stab wounds as a day of intermittent violence following South Australia's first Miss Africa pageant erupted into a vicious all-in brawl. Up to one hundred Africans armed with with knives, tyre levers, clubs, makeshift batons and a bedpost fought a pitched battle in Adelaide's Bent Street near the Austral Hotel early today.

"Clearly they had prepared themselves with weapons in the event that they did come together, which they did," Chief Inspector John Gerlach told reporters.

Police eventually broke it up and arrested four men while four others were admitted to hospital with stab wounds. A 21-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen and arm, a 19-year-old in the chest and stomach, a 19-year-old in the arm and a 20-year-old in the back.

"All four did receive surgery and are stable," Inspector Gerlach said.

The brawl was the culmination of 24 hours of violent clashes initiated by a fight involving 150 African people on Saturday night as they spilled out of a nightclub in Hindley Street. No injuries or arrests were reported from that initial clash or some smaller skirmishes reported to police in the 24 hours leading up to today's wild brawl.

Police believe many of those involved in the violence had travelled from interstate for the Miss Africa beauty pageant in Adelaide on Saturday. Inspector Gerlach praised the officers who responded promptly to the major brawl, saying their intervention had prevented more injuries.

"No doubt the management of the incident prevented further injury and possibly people dying as a result," he said.

Police have charged a 20-year-old man from Victoria with aggravated assault causing serious harm and affray. A 19-year-old man from Kilburn, in Adelaide's north, a 21-year-old man from Victoria and a 22-year-old man from Western Australia have been charged with behavioral street offences and weapons offences.

#11  ..and there is one school of thought that Germany wasn't so much unified in the 19th Century, but was gradually annexed by Prussia through the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars. The Kaiser was offered the crown of a federated Germany during the revolution of 1848, but declined to take it under the conditions, holding out to get it from the mouth of a gun with far less restraints upon his dynasty. With the destruction of the Prussian element, and its hundreds of years of militarism, within the German body, the modern unification and federation we have witnessed is closer to what was intended in 1848.

Self-Aiming Sniper Rifles
Lockheed Martin won a $6.9 million contract this week for the second phase of DARPA’s One-Shot system, which will provide direct observations of a target, measure every variable that influences a bullet’s flight, and calculate the aim offset in a sniper’s rifle scope.

During the project’s first phase, which started in 2007, Lockheed developed a down-range system that measured average crosswind; range to target; spotter scope position; air temperature, pressure, and humidity; and more, according to Military Aerospace. Using all those variables, the company calculated the ballistics for a .308 bullet at ranges as far as 3,600 feet.

While that’s impressive, the system was too heavy and unwieldy, and it couldn’t be used with standard rifle scopes. The phase-two design will be more compact and able to operate in real time and over longer distances.

It will measure atmospheric conditions, account for the weapon’s maximum effective range and include GPS coordinates. It’s also supposed to communicate with the rifle scope, informing the gun itself of the aim point offset and expected crosswind.

Famed Arab space scientist believes in ghouls
Says his faith in the Quran cements his belief
I have no doubt of that ...
Arab world's most prominent space scientist working in NASA believes in supernatural creatures, but admits he has no evidence to prove otherwise except for his faith in the Quran.

Dr Farouq al-Baz, who worked 43 years in NASA, told Alarabiya.net that he was sure that the ghouls, Jinns and demons live among us and said that he came to the conclusion through his scientific predisposition meshed with his complete believe in Quran verses signifying their existence.

Quran denotes to Jinn as creatures created from fire, while humans are created from mud.

Dr al-Baz said that Quran is his best inspiration, adding that the Quran compels Muslims to think beyond and contemplate.

#1  The pre-Koranic invisible critter bestiary actually has some interesting thingys in it, as well as explanations why they were not so plentiful as they had been in the-then ancient past.

The most popular of these were the djinn, who liked to hang out in graveyards, pretend to tell the future, then lie like dogs about it. Allan didn't care for them much, so would smite them with meteorites and lightning bolts when He was in a bad mood.

Mohammed latched on to the Arab version of the Hebrew myth, attributing the end of the old ways first to the Hebrew King Saul, who outlawed and killed most of the sorcerers and witches; the King David, who did a bunch of other unnatural critter slaying; and most of all to King Solomon.

The latter was given a powerful gift by Allan, so he created some lead tubes, which he used to imprison most of the djinn, then he sealed the tubes with his signet, and cast them into the ocean.

One of the more interesting non-djinn thingys are the Abdala. Their myth today has been taken over by the Sufi sect, revised, updated and Disney-fied, but originally they were far more interesting.

As humans have covenants with Allan, their "rules", the Abdala have a *different* covenant with Allan, so they do not operate under human rules. Their purpose is to "maintain reality", keeping the order and continuity of the world for Allan.

An interesting bit is that this included a warning to humans to leave the Abdala strictly alone. Also odd that they have no physical description, or mentioned characteristics. What they do is not the business of humans.

Apparently the original myth became blended with a different one from the Far East, so has taken on a different context. But they are kind of unique as myths go. "They exist but leave them alone."

#2  The next step, obviously, is for the UN to appoint Dr. al-Baz special ambassador to Jinn, ghouls, zombies and other unpleasant critters.
It would be a perfect follow-up to their new office of Ambassador to Extraterrestrials, a job for which al-Baz might also be qualified if it comes open.
