[Guardian.uk] The younger daughter of a British couple murdered while on holiday in the French Alps is expected to begin the journey back home on Sunday.
Four-year-old Zeena al-Hilli was the only member of her family to escape the killing unscathed after hiding in the rear footwell of the car where the bodies of father Saad, mother Iqbal and an elderly woman were rubbed out on Wednesday at a beauty spot near Lake Annecy.
The petrified child had taken refuge under her dead mother's legs and lay undiscovered for eight hours after the killings. She has been questioned gently by French gendarmes over the last few days at the hospital. She was put in the care of a nurse and a child psychologist, and had round-the-clock attention from a team from the British embassy. Apart from hearing "noises and cries", the public prosecutor Eric Maillaud said she had seen nothing and was unable to help the inquiry.
"The most important thing is to get her back to her family," he said. "She has been interviewed but we have tried to avoid causing her any further suffering."
The victims, who included a passing French cyclist, were each shot twice in the head with an automatic pistol, suggesting an liquidation. French Sherlocks say they are still trying to establish if there was more than one killer and how many weapons were used; around 25 bullet casings were found in and around the family's car. A source said initial forensic and ballistic tests suggested at least two armed gunnies had fired from outside the vehicle at close range.

[Boston Herald] An alleged cussing cockatoo is at the center of a heated neighborly dispute in which a Rhode Island woman is accused of training her bird to spew nasty expletives at her ex-husband and his girlfriend.
The foul-mouthed bird's banter has become so bad the neighbors say they are leaving their waterfront home.
"I have never dealt with anything like this cuckoo bird next door," Kathleen Melker, 53, told the Herald -- and she wasn't talking about Willy the cockatoo.
Lynne Taylor is due back in Warwick Municipal Court next week to fight allegations she violated a city animal noise ordinance when, according to Melker and boyfriend Craig Fontaine, she taught the bird to continually hurl curse words at them.
The dispute has largely become a symbolic battle -- the ordinance carries just a $15 fine.
Judges in superior and family courts have handed out restraining orders to people on both sides, even banning Melker's cat, Pharaoh, from stepping onto Taylor's property, said her lawyer, Stephen Peltier.
"The statute reads if an individual is annoyed, that becomes a public nuisance. That is broad based on case law," Peltier said of the ordinance, adding his client denies teaching Willy such language. The bird instead is saying "knock it off," words Fontaine himself taught it, Peltier said.
"The bird is reacting to its environment," added Peltier, who had a motion to dismiss the case thrown out on Thursday. "Melker is instigating the issue."
Melker denies that, and says the dispute has forced her and Fontaine to put his $332,000 home on the market. "We're done," she said. "We have no quality of life."

Drought and rising temperatures are forcing water managers across the country to scramble for ways to produce the same amount of power from the hydroelectric grid with less water, including from behemoths such as the Hoover Dam. Hydropower is not the only part of the nation's energy system that appears increasingly vulnerable to the impact of climate change, as low water levels affect coal-fired and nuclear power plants' operations and impede the passage of coal barges along the Mississippi River. But if we stopped burning coal, the climate would stop changing. Or would it change back to where it used to be? And when would that be?
"We're trying to manage a changing climate, its impact on water supplies and our ability to generate power, all at once," said Michael L. Connor, commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation, the Interior Department's water management agency. Producing electricity accounts for at least 40 percent of water use in the United States. Don't worry, Mike, you'll be looking for another job come January.

[Iran Press TV] International food aid meant for victims of flooding in Niger has been stolen, Niger's interior minister says.
"We have information that aid is being diverted to other places, that is, not to the victims of the flooding," Rooters quoted Niger's minister of the interior and public security, Abdou Labo, as saying on Saturday.
"At several of the sites where we are housing displaced people, we have determined that the food aid and the products (sent there) did not arrive in their entirety", he added.
He further argued that those who had stolen emergency food aid, organized by the United Nations ...an international organization whose stated aims of facilitating interational security involves making sure that nobody with live ammo is offended unless it's a civilized country... , would be put on trial.
Earlier reports in late August said that six weeks of floods, triggered by torrential rains, killed at least 52 people in Niger.

[Reuters] Thousands of Greeks marched at an annual fair in Greece's second-biggest city on Saturday to protest against a new round of wage and pension cuts demanded by international lenders in exchange for aid to stave off bankruptcy.

[Reuters] Bernard Arnault, France's richest man and chief executive of luxury group LVMH, said on Saturday he had applied for Belgian nationality, citing personal and business reasons.
Announcing the move a day after French President Francois Hollande said he would press ahead with a new tax on the super rich, Arnault said he would continue to pay taxes in France and keep his French nationality.
Hollande drew a mixed reaction in February when he announced plans for a 75 percent tax on revenue exceeding 1 million euros ($1.26 million) per year as part of efforts to cut France's public deficit to 3 percent of economic output in 2013.

Desperation: when your best option is to become Belgian.
[Dawn] A group of Pak Hindus arriving in the Indian state of Rajhasthan says that they will not return to their home country, according to a report published by the BBCUrdu.
The group of 171 people arrived in Rajhasthan's Jodhpur city via the 'Thar Express' train on Sunday.
Although the passengers in the group traveled to the Indian state on pilgrimage visas for religious purposes, they claim they will not return to Pakistain.
The Seemant Lok Sangthan (SLS), an organization for Hindus from Pakistain settled in India, has appealed to the Indian government to grant the group immigrant visas.
According to a front man of the organization, all 171 people in the group have arrived in Jodhpur from Pakistain's Sindh province, and "they all belong to Sanghar or Hyderabad."
The group comprises of 32 women and kiddies of whom a majority belong to the low-caste Bheel community of Hindus.
"You can not understand our pain. My father recently passed away; I could not even find a place to perform my father's last rites," the BBCUrdu quoted one of the people arriving with the group. "We will not go back to Pakistain. You may kill us if you wish, but we will not return."
The news follows media reports earlier last month of hundreds of Pak Hindu nationals from Sindh allegedly migrating to India over concerns of religious persecution and security fears. A committee was formed by President Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari ... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in ... to look into the reports of mass migration. However, some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them... the committee rejected the claims that members of the minority community were leaving Sindh.
Later in August, authorities in Rajhasthan state announced that around 900 Pak Hindus had become eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. The people included those Paks who had traveled to India prior to December 31, 2004 and refused return to their home country.

[Dawn] ISLAMABAD: The Christian girl accused of blasphemy was airlifted from Adiyala jail on Saturday and shifted to an unspecified place in Islamabad under the protective custody of police after completion of legal formalities by her lawyers.
Her counsel Tahir Naveed Chaudhry and a police brass hat said the girl would be shifted to a safe place in another city with her family.
The helicopter was arranged on the directives of Interior Minister Rehman Malik Pak politician, Interior Minister under the Gilani government. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Nawaz Sharif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men. He had to give up the interior ministry job because he held dual Brit citizenship. , the police officer said, adding that a heavy contingent of police commandoes had been deployed around the jail to avoid any untoward incident.
The capital police personnel, including SHO, investigation officer of the case and SSP, reached the jail, along with two armed personnel carriers. The girl whose face was covered with a piece of cloth was whisked to the waiting helicopter in an open area adjacent to the jail. The helicopter carrying the girl, her father, SSP and the investigation officer landed at the helipad of army aviation behind Shakaraprian in Islamabad.
The helicopter was later seen flying towards the western side of the capital, the area where girl's town Mehria Jaffar is located.
There were unconfirmed reports that the girl and members of her family met a representative of the government under the custody of police commandos and also visited their house. According to sources, the girl and her family were shifted to an unspecified area and would be kept in a women hostel till Sunday morning.
A bigwig said that the girl's family had been allowed to move to any place of their choice, but it was suggested that they should shift outside the capital and the place would be kept secrete for their security.

Earlier, an assistant sub-inspector and then a sub-inspector were investigating the case.
A senior police officer privy to the investigation told Dawn that the inspector general of police had recorded a statement of the girl and another would be recorded soon. Malik Asad adds: Additional Sessions Judge Kamaran Basharat Mufti signed the release papers. The Pakistain Minorities Alliance deposited the surety bonds for her release. On Friday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Azam Khan granted bail to the girl against a surety bond of Rs1 million and adjourned the proceeds
till Monday.
The girl's lawyer told Dawn that the state was responsible for the girl's safety as well as that of her family. Tahir Chaudhry said the girl would be kept in a rest house, along with her family, at Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location because of security concerns.
Nadeem Anthony, another counsel, said defence lawyers would appear before the court against Imam Jadoon because he had tried to misuse the blasphemy law. He said it was the Imam who committed blasphemy and he must be punished in accordance with the law.
