Catherine Herridge, Fox News Veteran, Moves to CBS News
[Variety] Catherine Herridge, a Fox News Channel veteran who has been with that network since it was founded in 1996, is moving to rival CBS News.

She will work as a senior investigative correspondent out of Washington, CBS News said, and will start in November.

Herridge is the second long-serving Fox News journalist to leave the Fox Corporation-owned cable-news outlet in recent weeks. Shepard Smith, another long-serving Fox News journalist who was seen as the network’s main breaking-news anchor, surprised viewers earlier this month by announcing his departure on a Friday-afternoon broadcast. Smith had tangled on air with opinion host Tucker Carlson.

#1  Her departure may give a new boost to recent speculation that the network’s news-side employees have grown frustrated during a period when its opinion hosts have largely used their programs to lend support to President Donald Trump and his administration, sometimes criticizing news reports.

Variety seizes the opportunity to mention their beloved Shep and blame Trump for career changes.

#6  She made an interesting comment that CBS is interested in facts. We know that is pretty much crap but I believe it was not praise of CBS but a dig at what Fox news has become after the kids took over. Always liked her appearances on Tucker. We'll see how she reports going forward. Can't blame her for soaking CBS for mucho dinero.

#7  This is all about money, not politics.

Trump been berry berry good to me, say the suits and shareholders at NYT and the corporate parents of the cable outlets and broadcast networks.

Two Minutes' Hate-- actually, Nonstop 24/7 Hate of Any and All Things Trumpian -- is a formula for reversing the death of media.

During the Russia hoax, some of these profit-seeking entities were rolling in $$$$$. Post-Mueller, their ratings and ad $ fell off a cliff.

Hence the perpetual hoax, Russiagate 2, the Ukrainian Projection away from Chalupa and Burisma Bros and Hillary and Biden's Shitshows onto Trump.

Follow the money. These people aren't journalists.

They're whores who put on circus paint and perform in the burlesque tent at The Shitshow.

Utah sees record cold of -43.6 ºF – ‘Perhaps the lowest October temperature ever recorded' in continental U.S.
[Climate Depot] Meteorologist Paul Dorian: "Perhaps the most amazing temperature recorded in this unusual cold spell for the western US took place earlier today in the remote observing station of Peter Sinks, Utah...the unofficial overnight low temperature there of -43.6 ºF is pretty amazing for this time of year and perhaps the lowest temperature ever recorded in the Lower 48 during the month of October. Nearby Salt Lake City, Utah provided some supporting evidence of the extreme cold as it set a low temperature record of 14 ºF for the date and records there go all the way back to 1874.

#7  The micro climate at the temperature recording device at Peter Sinks lends itself to this sort of thing.

The site is at a low point in a high elevation (about 8000') valley. The hills around the site had fresh snow and the night was exceptionally dry with almost no wind. Perfect for cooling via radiation augmented by cold air drainage.

The radiosonde balloon released near Salt L City had the temperature about -5F at 8000' about that time.

back in Feb 1985, the temp at this station dropped to -69F on a similar night

Bangladesh
Foreign minister admits some female workers tortured in Saudi Arabia
[Dhaka Tribune] Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has acknowledged that some Bangladeshi female workers are tortured in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, but appeared to have downplayed the magnitude of the suffering of the women ‐ who have long been subjected to serious crimes including rape at the hands of their employers there.

He also ruled out any moratorium on sending women workers to the oil rich kingdom, the largest remittance sending country for Bangladesh.

"There are 250,000-300,000 female workers [in Saudi Arabia]. How many of them became victims of such crimes? Some people are being tortured and we have made arrangements for them," the minister told news hounds at his office yesterday.

"We are providing those who are tortured with housing and we are also bringing them back. In some cases these are happening," he replied to a barrage of questions highlighting the plight of Bangladeshi female workers in Saudi Arabia with statistics.

Momen mentioned a day’s development where he handed over cheques to the family of deceased and two injured in the crane accident in Makkah in 2015.

"Bangladesh’s relationship with Saudia Arabia is very good. That is why they paid Tk2.26 crore for the dear departed and Tk1.13 crore for the injured. Think about it," he said.

"Many are returning because the number of jobs has gone down [in Saudi Arabia]," he added.

When suggested that Bangladesh does not "challenge" the Saudi Arabian government about the torture of the female workers, the foreign minister said: "How do you know we don’t challenge? Whenever there is any accident, we instantly inform the Saudi authorities.

"How do you know that we did not challenge? Do we have to tell the public that we have challenged?"

Momen said: "There are 12.2 million expatriates across the world. People die when they are abroad. Only 1% of those amount to 11,000. Think about it. Many people would die normally. Isn’t it?"

If any of our workers face ill treatment, the government immediately draws Saudi Arabia’s attention and they take measures in line with their laws, he said.

On many occasions, information also remains unavailable to deal with the allegations, he added.

The foreign minister refuted a notion that many domestic workers are not able to lodge complaints due to the environment they live in.

"No, no. There is a mechanism in place through which they can complain. We have established shelters for them. Indeed, some victimisations are taking place and we are informing the Saudi government," he said.

"The Saudi authorities are also realising that some incidents are happening. These are happening in individual levels. The [Saudi] government is not victimising them," he stressed.

When asked if Bangladesh will stop sending female workers to Saudi Arabia, the minister said: "We, Bangladesh, do not want to discriminate. We do not want to leave women left behind.

"I don’t want to stop those women who want to go, because in our country man and woman are equal. We do not want to keep women as second class citizens."

Russian military base in Armenia to double combat potential after delivery of new weapons
Why does Armenia have a Russian base?
[ALMASDARNEWS] Russia’s 102nd military base stationed in the town of Gyumri in Armenia will almost double its combat potential after it is rearmed with new and upgraded weapon systems, Base Commander Colonel Nikolai Martynyuk reported to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Tuesday.

Russia’s defense chief inspected the 102nd military base in Armenia on Tuesday.

Also, Chief of Staff of Russia’s Southern Military District Lieutenant-General Sergei Kuzovlev reported to the defense minister that the 102nd military base in Armenia "is provided with materiel, military hardware and armament in full."

The general also said that the military base’s training range infrastructure allows conducting a full cycle of combat training measures, including drills.

Chinese military debuts most advanced ballistic missile
Most advanced compared to what, precisely?
[ALMASDARNEWS] China’s most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the DF-41, made its debut at the National Day parade in Beijing on Tuesday, which Chinese military experts said is a message to the world that China has sufficient and reliable strategic nuclear power to respond to any "nuclear blackmail" from any country.

16 transporter erector launchers of the DF-41 missile were inspected during the parade in Tiananmen Square on Tuesday.

A DF-41 missile has an operational range of more than 14, 000 kilometers and can carry about 10 independently targetable nuclear warheads, capable of hitting anywhere on Earth, according to the US think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, and this would make DF-41 the world’s longest range missile, surpassing the range of the US LGM-30 Minuteman which has a reported range of 13,000 kilometers.

Yang Chengjun, a Chinese expert on missile technology and nuclear strategy and chief scientist of quantum defense, told the Global Times that the DF-41 is Chinese fourth-generation strategic nuclear weapon and has the longest operational range among all Chinese ICBMs.

North Korea fires 2 unidentified projectiles. Guam still safe
[DAILYSABAH] South Korea's military said North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
on Thursday fired two projectiles toward its eastern sea, extending a streak of weapons tests apparently aimed at ramping up pressure on Washington over a stalemate in nuclear negotiations.

Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the weapons were fired from a region near the North Korean capital of Pyongyang. The Joint Chiefs of Staff didn't immediately confirm whether the weapons were ballistic missiles or rocket artillery, or how far they flew.

The North's latest launch follows statements of displeasure over the slow pace of nuclear negotiations with the United States and demands that the Trump administration ease sanctions and pressure on Pyongyang.

Cyber
Government leaks data again...
[Infosecurity Magazine] Researchers have discovered another unsecured Elasticsearch database, this time exposing data on thousands of travelers including US military and government employees.

The research team at vpnMentor discovered the online database hosted on AWS infrastructure, on September 13. It belonged to Autoclerk, a reservations management system now owned by hotel chain Best Western Hotels and Resorts Group.

The database contained over 179GB of data, often sourced from third party travel and hospitality platforms including OpenTravel, HAPI Cloud, and Synxis. Among these were hundreds of thousands of bookings and reservations, exposing personal details such as: full name, date of birth, home address, phone number, dates & costs of travel, and masked credit card details.

For ordinary travelers caught in leaks like this, there is the risk of follow-on phishing attacks and identify fraud attempts, as well as a chance that attackers could target their home while they are away.

However, there are even more concerning national security implications for the government personnel data exposed in the incident.

Orange Man takes up new permanent residence in Florida
[NYT] He came of age in Queens, built Trump Tower, starred in "The Apprentice," bankrupted his businesses six times, and drew cheering crowds and angry protesters to Fifth Avenue after his election. Through it all, President Trump ‐ rich, bombastic and to many Americans the epitome of a New Yorker ‐ was intertwined with the city he called his lifelong home.

No longer.

In late September, Mr. Trump changed his primary residence from Manhattan to Palm Beach, Fla., according to documents filed with the Palm Beach County Circuit Court. Melania Trump, the first lady, also changed her residence to Palm Beach in an identical document.

Each of the Trumps filed a "declaration of domicile" saying that the Mar-a-Lago Club, Mr. Trump’s resort in Palm Beach, will be their permanent residence.

The president confirmed the decision on Twitter after The New York Times reported on the move, saying that he would "be making Palm Beach, Florida, our Permanent Residence."

A spotlight on the people reshaping our politics. A conversation with voters across the country. And a guiding hand through the endless news cycle, telling you what you really need to know.

"I cherish New York, and the people of New York," he added, "and always will."

But he didn’t have much nice to say about the public officials of New York.

"I have been treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state. Few have been treated worse," he said, describing his decision as the "best for all concerned."

Sukkur prayer leader arrested for allegedly raping minor student
[DAWN] A prayer leader from Sukkur's Pano Aqil tehsil was arrested on Thursday for allegedly having raped a ten-year-old girl.

A case was registered by Sukkur Police against the suspect who leads prayers at a mosque in Dildar Samejo village.

"We arrested the prayer leader of the mosque after he was accused of raping a 10-year-old girl and started the paperwork but haven't done much else against him," said Sukkur SSP Irfan Samoon.

According to the SSP, a letter was issued by the police so a medical exam of the girl could be carried out. The girl used to take Holy Koran lessons from the prayer leader, he said.

The minor girl, narrating the incident, said that when she reached the mosque premises for her lesson, she was told by someone that the teacher was calling her. "When I went to see him, he shut the door and window, grabbed me, covered my mouth and pinned my arms down."

The girl's father told DawnNewsTV that the suspect had "subjected the girl to rape multiple times". "She informed us only after falling ill yesterday," he said.

First Common Core High School Grads Worst-Prepared For College In 15 Years
For the third time in a row since Common Core was fully phased in nationwide, U.S. student test scores on the nation’s broadest and most respected test have dropped, a reversal of an upward trend between 1990 and 2015. Further, the class of 2019, the first to experience all four high school years under Common Core, is the worst-prepared for college in 15 years, according to a new report.

"Students in the U.S. made significant progress in math and reading achievement on NAEP from 1990 until 2015, when the first major dip in achievement scores occurred," reported U.S. News and World Report. Perhaps not coincidentally, 2015 is the year states were required by the Obama administration to have fully phased in Common Core.

#5  In math, CC apparently teaches children inefficient algorithms in order to make them actually understand the nature of decimal numbers.

It's a laudable goal.

But in practice it boils down to substituting rote memorization of efficient algorithms with rote memorization of inefficient algorithms.

#6  True, repetition is the mother of learning. Rote learning of simpler concepts in early years is essential to grasp advanced lessons later that a teacher can build on.

Was the bridge you're driving on designed by an Empathetic Engineer?

As of Dec. 2018, the Obama-appointed National Science Foundation (NSF) Director had spent over $62m in his four year tenure so far on studies of "intersectionality and STEM."

A particularly choice study: "Forming the Empathetic Engineer."

Many more here.

#20  In October, Seattle public schools unveiled a “framework” to inject “math ethnic studies” into all K-12 math classes, teaching “how math has been and continues to be used to oppress and marginalize people and communities of color.”

Students will be asked to “identify the inherent inequities of the standardized testing system used to oppress and marginalize people and communities of color” and “explain how math dictates economic oppression.”

A rather pathetic article I saw recently was about how horrible "RTFM" -- "Read The Fine Manual" -- is, and how we should stop saying it in favor of mentoring and sharing knowledge.

*sigh*

RTFM is mentoring and sharing knowledge.

Seniors at California complex ‘abandoned' during blackout
NOVATO, Calif. (AP) ‐ One woman in her 80s tripped over another resident who had fallen on the landing in a steep stairwell. Others got disoriented, even in their own apartments, and cried out for help.

At least 20 seniors with wheelchairs and walkers were essentially trapped, in the dark, in a low-income apartment complex in Northern California during a two-day power shut-off aimed at warding off wildfires.

Residents of the Villas at Hamilton in Novato, north of San Francisco, say they were without guidance from their property management company or the utility behind the blackout as they faced pitch-black stairwells and hallways and elevators that shut down.

"We were surprised by how dark it was," said Pamela Zuzak, 70, who uses a walker to get around. "There was nothing, nothing lit. It was like going into a darkroom closet, pitch black, you couldn’t see in front of you."

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. shut off power to more than 2 million people over the weekend to prevent its equipment from sparking fires amid hot, dry gusts. It was just one of four pre-emptive rounds of shut-offs imposed by the utility this month.

Georgia State Lawmaker Proposes Making Gender Transition Surgery for Minors a Felony
[PJ] Republican State Representative Ginny Ehrhart from Georgia wants to make it a felony for doctors to perform gender transition procedures on minors, including mastectomy, vasectomy, castration and other forms of genital mutilation, and ban the prescription of puberty-blocking drugs and cross-sex hormone therapy.

State Rep. Ginny Ehrhart, R-Powder Springs, said the legislation aims to protect children from having irreversible procedures done when they are young. Current law requires a parent to consent to surgery or for a minor to be prescribed medication.

While the bill is still being drafted, Ehrhart said Georgia medical providers who perform surgeries or administer or prescribe medications that assist minors with gender transition could be charged with a felony. The legislation would not affect doctors working with adults who seek to undergo gender transition.

"We’re talking about children that can’t get a tattoo or smoke a cigar or a cigarette in the state of Georgia but can be castrated and get sterilized," she said.

While this seems like common sense to most people, Jeff Graham, the executive director of Georgia Equality, an LGBT rights group in the state, blasted the proposed legislation. "This legislation would criminalize decisions that are made carefully within families in consultation with medical professionals and mental health professionals. Supporting children in recognizing their gender identity is not only humane, it saves lives and strengthens families."

Ehrhart was motivated to draft this bill because of the James Younger case in Texas, and says the final bill may include language that makes parents liable as well as doctors. "There may be some implication for the responsibility of the parent to subject the child to this sort of dangerous medical intervention," Ehrhart said.

#2  This legislation would criminalize decisions that are made carefully within families in consultation with medical professionals and mental health professionals

So are child rape, ince$t and abortion, or even FGM in some cultures. In all cases the child is deceptively miseducated about his/her body rights, then coaxed to undergo abuse in a way so as to assume willful participation in it. To the child it seems it was his/her decision.

It's planned and malicious abuse and sexual mutilation, plain and simple.

#3  I doubt it will pass. If it does, some black robed tyrant will overturn it. I hate to say it, but the requirement to legislate (make criminal) such activities says something about our society.
