Rodent Infestation at Distr. Center Leads to Temp. Closing of 400 Family Dollar Stores
[Breitbart] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently discovered a rodent infestation at a Family Dollar distribution facility in Arkansas, which led to the temporary closure of over 400 stores in multiple states.

The inspection at the West Memphis, Arkansas, facility began in January after the FDA received a consumer complaint, the agency said in a February 18 release. Products purchased from January 1, 2021, through at least February 18, 2022, at "Family Dollar stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee may be unsafe for consumers to use," the FDA stated.

The FDA’s report detailed the conditions of the facility:

[Al Reuters] China agriculture minister says winter wheat condition could be worst in history
[Reuters] The condition of China's winter wheat crop could be the "worst in history", the agriculture minister said on Saturday, raising concerns about grain supplies in the world's biggest wheat consumer.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the country's annual parliament meeting, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Tang Renjian said that rare heavy rainfall last year delayed the planting of about one-third of the normal wheat acreage. read more

A survey of the winter wheat crop taken before the start of winter found that the amount of first- and second-grade crop was down by more than 20 percentage points, Tang said.

"Not long ago we went to the grassroots to do a survey and many farming experts and technicians told us that crop conditions this year could be the worst in history," he said. "This year's grain production indeed faces huge difficulties."

The minister's comments underscore concerns about China's grain supply at the same time as the war between Russia and Ukraine, which together account for about 29% of global wheat exports, has disrupted supplies causing wheat prices to surge to 14-year highs.

However, Tang is confident China can ensure a bumper harvest of summer grain thanks to strong policy and technical support and the improving crop condition for the grain.

Fuelled by the Ukraine crisis, wheat prices in China soared to a record this week on existing domestic supply worries.

Tang's comments also come as Beijing has refocused on food security, a long-standing priority for the central leadership that has become increasingly prominent in policy since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020.

China's state planner said in its own report at the parliament meeting that grain supply remains tight, despite consecutive good harvests in recent years.

To address the issue, the National Development and Reform Commission's (NDRC) report said China will ensure that grain acreage for the year stays above 117.33 million hectares (289.93 million acres).

China will also increase the production of soybeans and other oilseed crops, the NDRC said, reiterating top policy priorities in the farm sector.

The country will also build up momentum to increase corn output, it said.

China's corn imports surged to a record last year, amid soaring domestic prices and low inventories.

China will guarantee the supply-demand balance of grain, edible oil, cotton, sugar and fertilisers through the effective use of reserves and imports, the NDRC said.

China will allocate 41.639 billion yuan ($6.59 billion) in subsidies in 2022 for agricultural insurance premiums, up 30.8% from a year earlier, the finance ministry said in another report.

At the start of the parliament meeting, Premier Li Keqiang said China will ensure key agricultural product supplies this year, including grains.

Everyone must work together to ensure that the country’s "rice bag" and "vegetable basket" are well-filled, and that we have a secure food supply for the people, Li said.

China will stop any attempts to use cropland for any purpose other than agriculture and specifically grain production, to safeguard the area of farmland, and revitalise the seed industry at a faster pace, Li said in the government work report.

Li also said China will see that hog production is better regulated and ensure the production and supply of livestock, poultry and aquatic products and vegetables.

China's massive pig herd was decimated by the deadly African swine fever disease, sending pork prices to record highs and increasing consumer prices.

China quickly rebuilt its pig herd to normal levels since then, according to official data, but stabilizing production and prices has become a major focus for the government.

Iowa State Lawmakers Finally End the Madness, Ban Trans Athletes from Competing in Female-Only Sports
[WesternJournal] Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a bill that restricts women’s and girls’ sports to athletes who are, in fact, women and girls, making the Hawkeye State the latest state to pass such legislation.

The bill, HF 2416, requires that athletes enrolled in girls’ and women’s sports at both public and private schools and community colleges, as well as universities affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, be limited to athletes listed as female on their birth certificates.

"This is a victory for girls’ sports in Iowa. No amount of talent, training or effort can make up for the natural physical advantages males have over females. It’s simply a reality of human biology," Reynolds said Thursday while signing the bill, surrounded by smiling young women and girls. "Forcing females to compete against males is the opposite of inclusivity and it’s absolutely unfair."

"It worries me that this bill is needed at all. It’s hard to imagine how anyone who cares about the rights of women and girls could support anything less," she also said, according to NPR.

"The message that women are so much more than a hormone level, that the things girls love are worth protecting and their hard work and dedication is recognized and their dreams can become a reality," local track star Ainsley Erzen, who has been an outspoken proponent for protecting women’s and girl’s sports, said at the signing ceremony.

Iowa is the latest of several states to pass legislation protecting women’s sports. Last year was a record-breaking year for such legislation; 37 states drafted similar bills with Idaho, Montana, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, West Virginia and Florida successfully passing measures restricting women and girls’ sports to female athletes only.

The issue has been drawing attention across the nation for some time, but college swimmer Lia Thomas of the University of Pennsylvania, who has been enjoying a wildly successful career on the women’s team after competing on the men’s team for three years, has brought the issue to the forefront in recent months.

Proponents of transgender athletes in women’s and girls’ sports were out in full force on Thursday as Reynolds signed the legislation, which Iowa’s Democrats unsuccessfully opposed.

Becky Smith, the executive director of the LGBT youth organization Iowa Safe Schools stood behind Reynolds and silently held up a transgender flag in what the group said was a display of solidarity for transgender athletes.

There’s an elephant in the room when it comes to transgender athletes competing in women’s sports — well, two, if you count the fact that legislation like this only ever targets women’s sports. It highlights the stark reality that absolutely no one thinks that female athletes will have an unfair advantage over male athletes if allowed to compete in men’s and boys’ sports. (Under HR 2416, female athletes who identify as male are still free to play on boys’ and men’s teams.)

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
AWOL: Where Is the Russian Air Force?
[PJMedia] The Russian Air Force (VKS) has procured 350 modern combat aircraft in the last ten years and the question that must be on every Russian's mind in the second week of the Ukraine War is: What did we get for our money?

Because by all accounts, the Russian Air Force is nearly AWOL from Russia's biggest battles since 1945.

Part of what's missing is likely fear of losses to Ukraine antiaircraft missiles-weather-fixed, mobile, or man-portable air defenses (MANPADS).

One big reason the U.S. Air Force (and more recently, the Navy) went so big for stealth is that the battlespace was getting extremely uncomfortable for fighters and bombers. Soviet - later, Russian and Chinese - air defenses were getting denser and deadlier. The jet that was more difficult to detect, track, and hit would have the advantage.

The U.S. bet wisely on stealth because the modern battlefield, including Ukraine, is rife with antiaircraft missiles.

What few missions VKS has flown over Ukraine, they’ve flown mostly at night in order to minimize losses to MANPADS. The few precision strikes Russia has launched have been with cruise missiles, again to minimize risk to Russia’s expensive fleet of non-stealthy aircraft.

But what good is a modern air force that can’t be deployed in a modern battlespace?

Stealth is the price of admission to modern air warfare, but it’s a price Russia can’t afford to pay.

#1  Also another reason the US has been developing long range stand-off weapons. Some stealthy, some not. The low-stealth ones are cheap and can be launched in large numbers to overwhelm air defenses. The stealth ones pick off high value radar sites and C&C that control the air defense. Then send in the F-35s to pick off whatever is left.

In 10-20 years substitute the F-35s with stealth AI drones.

#13  Don't forget the 6th Horseman: Civil War.
Are Democrats Really Going to Cross the Rubicon?
By J. Peder Zane
March 07, 2022
RCP

While the world focused on Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine last week, little attention was paid to the ineffably consequential decision by Democrats to go all-out in their assault on American democracy.

Just as Julius Caesar invited civil war by crossing the Rubicon, the partisan House committee investigating the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol let it be known that it will recommend bringing two sets of criminal charges against former President Donald Trump regarding the 2020 election. One allegation is that that he tried to obstruct the lawful counting of votes. The other is that he engaged in a conspiracy to defraud the United States through his false claims of a stolen election.

Given how divided our country is, and the wide support Trump still enjoys, his indictment would be an incalculably reckless act. It would be tantamount to the first round of live fire across the bow....

Halcyon True North request for assistance to Ukrainian SF officer
Friends and Colleagues,

This is a request for assistance. Anything you can do to support is hugely appreciated. Feel free to broadly share this note.

We recently established a non-profit called "Halcyon True North". The broad purpose of the non-profit is to support affordable higher education for underprivileged youth who otherwise would have to forgo college, and support housing for single/abused mothers who are trying to survive. In general, we just want to ’do some good’.

We have also decided to fully support the family of a Ukrainian Special Forces officer whom we know named Pasha with whom I served in Afghanistan. Pasha was a student at the National War College in DC until last week when he flew back to Ukraine (supported by Halcyon True North) to help organize the partisan fight against the Russians. His wife Yuliia and his two children could not go back of course and are stuck without resources in DC.

While Pasha was here, the family was fully funded by the U.S. Government with housing, sustainment funds, etc. They are no longer entitled to that support since Pasha left, and Halcyon True North is going to directly support them for the next year to 18 months. Request your donation to Halcyon True North to support. Any donations will be directly allocated to support Pasha’s family. Frankly, "if not us, who? If not now, when?"

Our 501(c)(3) status is awaiting IRS approval, however there is a 22 month ’look back period’ so any donations made now will be tax deductible. Our web site will be up and running soon, as will our link to make donations. In the meantime, you can mail a check to:

#16  Zelensky will be suing for peace soon.

President Putin’s Russia will have to live with all the unexpected consequences of his little adventure regardless: financial and political dependence on China, the rearming and domestic fueling of Germany, new members joining NATO, and the sunk cost of a military invasion in money, manpower, and matériel that won’t be replenished by war booty after the world watched his blitzkrieg founder on the adamant unwelcome of his Slavic brothers. Even President Zelensky’s surrender and return to private life may not be enough to pacify the Ukraine this time, which will mean an additional ongoing expense to Russia of funds and prestige.

#24  Oh, is it afternoon already? Must be NATIONAL LAMPOON time!

Today we honor our fellow hibernian black humorist PJ O'Rourke, with a tour of his magisterial "Foreigners Around The World: A Brief Survey of the Various Foreigners, Their Chief Characteristics, Customs and Manners"
By P.J. O'Rourke

Let's start with the country we can all agree to hate... GERMANY! (cf. p16). Take it away, PJ!

Racial Characteristics:

Piggish-looking, sadomasochistic automatons whose only known forms of relaxation are swilling watery beer from vast tubs and singing the idiotically repetitive verses of their porcine folk tune-both of which amusements probably hark back to a prehuman state.

Germans have never been successfully Christianized. Their language lacks any semblance of civilized speech. Their usual diet consists almost wholly of old cabbage and sections of animal intestines filled with blood and gore.

Once every two or three decades, they set forth, lemming-like, on pointless military adventures during which great numbers of them are slaughtered--much to the improvement of the world in general. Their lardy women have long, tangled masses of sticky hair under their arms, and the men shave the sides of their heads.

Good Points:
Kill a lot of French.

#32  Speaking of Aussies, here's PJ again:

AUSTRALIANS

Racial Characteristics:

Violently loud alcoholic roughnecks whose idea of fun is to throw up on your car. The national sport is breaking furniture and the average daily consumption of beer in Sydney is ten and three quarters Imperial gallons for children under the age of nine. "Making a Shambles" is required study in the primary schools and all Australians are bilingual, speaking both English and Sheep.

Possibly as a result of their country's being upside down, the local dialect has over 400 terms for vomit. These include "technicolor yawn" "talking to the toilet," "round-trip meal ticket," and "singing lunch."

It is illegal to employ the aboriginal inhabitants as anything but toilets, and some of the peculiar forms of native wildlife have up to nine assholes. The recent destruction of Darwin by a hurricane was actually a cover story for the regrettable coincidence of paydays on three separate sheep stations.

Good points:
Amusing zoos.

Proper Forms of Address:
Steady there, Cool off, For Christ's sake-not in the sink, Stay back, I've got a gun!

Let the master educate you about the meaning of Hi-ber-ni-an. "Your"* welcome
* contraction, Rantburg-moron patois, = you're

from "How the Whale Got His Throat"

So the Whale swam and swam and swam, with both flippers and his tail, as hard as he could for the hiccoughs; and at last he saw the Mariner’s natal-shore and the white-cliffs-of-Albion, and he rushed half-way up the beach, and opened his mouth wide and wide and wide, and said, ‘Change here for Winchester, Ashuelot, Nashua, Keene, and stations on the Fitchburg Road;’ and just as he said ‘Fitch’ the Mariner walked out of his mouth.

But while the Whale had been swimming, the Mariner, who was indeed a person of infinite-resource-and-sagacity, had taken his jack-knife and cut up the raft into a little square grating all running criss- cross, and he had tied it firm with his suspenders (now , you know why you were not to forget the suspenders!), and he dragged that grating good and tight into the Whale’s throat, and there it stuck!

Then he recited the following Sloka , which, as you have not heard it, I will now proceed to relate—
*** INSERT VOICE OF GEOFFREY PARKER, IN NOT-BAD IRISH BROGUE HERE***
"By means of a grating
I have stopped your ating."

For the Mariner he was also an Hi-ber-ni-an.

And he stepped out on the shingle, and went home to his mother, who had given him leave to trail his toes in the water; and he married and lived happily ever afterward. So did the Whale. But from that day on, the grating in his throat, which he could neither cough up nor swallow down, prevented him eating anything except very, very small fish; and that is the reason why whales nowadays never eat men or boys or little girls...

Ukraine anger as Putin offers evacuation routes to Russia
[BBC] A new Russian ceasefire proposal to allow civilians to flee key cities has been branded "immoral" by Ukraine.

  • People in Kyiv will be offered safe passage to Russia's ally Belarus, while those in Kharkiv will have a corridor leading only to Russia itself.

  • Corridors from besieged Mariupol and Sumy will lead to Ukrainian cities and to Russian ones.

  • Two ceasefire attempts in Mariupol, where people are running out of food, collapsed at the weekend.

  • Rocket attacks have continued on residential areas in several cities, Ukraine says, warning of an all-out assault on the capital.

  • Four people including a mother and two children were killed in mortar fire as residents fled Irpin, near Kyiv

Russian special forces 'furious' with war plan in Ukraine
    BLUF:
[Washington Examiner] "Sources have been telling me, sources that are well connected to the Russian Security Services, that the offensive is not going well, that some special forces, the Russian Spetsnaz, are furious because they have been sent into battle without proper support, and many of them have been killed. They say that the national guard forces and the regular army, the national guard forces include those Chechen units, that two of them are not coordinating on the field. And that the overall battle plan is somewhat disjointed in that it's partly a plan for war and partly a plan for peacekeeping and so-called de-Nazification of this country. And it has led to a lack of cohesion," Engel reported.

"A lot of this goes back to the man who's behind it all, Vladimir Putin, who I'm told is now increasingly isolated, is just taking advice from his inner circle, that there are only about three people who matter right now," Engel continued. "And that speech, you mentioned it a short while ago, that Putin gave yesterday — bizarre location, speaking at Aeroflot, to a group of flight attendants. He sounded incredibly angry. He sounded detached. He was talking about how the Ukrainians here are machine-gunning people, that they're driving around in cars packed with explosives, jihadi-style. And he went very deep and repeatedly on this theme that they're fighting against the Nazis. It was the angriest I've ever seen him."

Thousands arrested at anti-war protests across Russia
[Aljazeera] Thousands of people have been arrested at protests across Russia against President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s interior ministry said more than 3,500 people had been arrested: 1,700 in Moscow, 750 in St Petersburg and 1,061 in other cities. The ministry said 5,200 people had taken part in the protests.

The OVD-Info protest monitoring group said it had documented the arrest of at least 4,366 people in 56 cities.

The last Russian protests with a similar number of arrests were in January 2021, when thousands demanded the release of opposition leader Alexey Navalny after he was arrested on returning from Germany where he had been recovering from nerve agent poisoning.

Some Russian state-controlled media carried short reports about Sunday’s protests but they did not feature prominently in news bulletins.

Russia’s RIA news agency said the Manezhnaya Square in Moscow, adjoining the Kremlin, had been "liberated" by police, who had arrested some participants of an unsanctioned protest against the military operation in Ukraine.

Humanitarian corridors from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumy
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist. Boris Rozhin

[ColonelCassad] Today there will be another attempt to save the population of the cities, where the Nazis actually took him hostage to use as a human shield.

The Russian Defense Ministry decided not to postpone the process of withdrawing the population on the back burner and announced a "day of silence". The guarantor of compliance with the conditions on the Ukrainian side was Emmanuel Macron, who, against the backdrop of the election campaign in France, is trying to earn points.

The withdrawal of the population will be carried out in four directions:

    ▪️ from Kiev :
    Kiev - Gostomel - Rakovka - Sosnovka - Ivankov - Oranoe - Chernobyl - Gden (Belarus) - Gomel (Belarus). From there - delivery by air transport to the Russian Federation;

    ▪️ from Mariupol:
    route number 1: Mariupol - Novoazovsk - Taganrog - Rostov-on-Don. From there - by air, rail and road transport to selected destinations or points of temporary accommodation;

    route number 2: Mariupol - Portovskoye - Mangush - bypassing Nikolskoye - Republic - Rozovka - Bilmak - Pologi - Orekhov - Zaporozhye;

    ▪️ from Kharkov:
    Kharkov - Nekhoteevka - Belgorod. From there - by air, rail and road transport to selected destinations or points of temporary accommodation;

    ▪️ from Sumy:
    route number 1: Sumy - Sudzha - Belgorod. From there - by air, rail and road transport to selected destinations or points of temporary accommodation;

    route number 2: Sumy - Golubovka - Romny - Lokhvitsa - Lubny - Poltava.

Of all the settlements, they offer to go both to the Ukrainian side and to the Russian side. In Kyiv and Kharkov routes to the south are open anyway.

The entire process of withdrawing the population will be recorded on UAVs in order to avoid provocations.

No significant Russian movement after 11 days of war on Ukraine: Pentagon
[Defense News] Russian invasion still slowed, airspace over Ukraine still contested, Pentagon says
    6:33 p.m. EST March 6

Though Russia has now committed about 95% of the combat power it amassed along Ukraine’s borders, the Pentagon has seen "limited changes on the ground" while the airspace remains contested, a senior U.S. defense official said Sunday evening.

After 11 days of war, "Russian forces continued efforts to advance and isolate Kyiv, Kharkiv and Chernihiv across the north and east are being met with strong Ukrainian resistance," the official said, in an email to reporters.

"There does not appear to be any significant movement along the Russian axes," the official said. "Leading elements remain outside these city centers. We cannot give specific distances today."

The long convoy of Russian troops and vehicles headed south to Kyiv "continues to be stalled," the official said, offering details on the condition of anonymity.

"We assess that the Russians have now committed inside Ukraine somewhere near 95% of the combat power they had amassed along the border.

Fighting continues in the south, near the cities of Kherson and Mykolaiv, the official said.

"We cannot independently verify reporting of Russian forces firing on protesters in Kherson," said the official, who added that the Pentagon has not observed an amphibious landing in or near Odessa either.

"Nor do we assess one is imminent," the official said.

"We’ve observed continued ongoing fighting and efforts to encircle Mariupol," the official said. "There continue to be reports of wide-spread utility outages (water and electricity)."

Earlier in the day, Ukraine claimed Russia violated a second ceasefire agreement. The official could not independently verify those claims.
It's pretty clear the Russians did. Including one where a NYT reporter was 20ft from a mortar explosion that killed 3 of a family of 4.

Attack On Europe: Documenting Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine
[ORYXSPIOENKOP] A detailed list of the destroyed and captured vehicles and equipment of both sides can be seen below. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, munitions, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment (including aircraft) are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. ATGMs and MANPADS are included in the list but not included in the ultimate count. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991.

    Russia - 845, of which: destroyed: 337, damaged: 10, abandoned: 147, captured: 351

    Ukraine - 248, of which: destroyed: 93, damaged: 4, abandoned: 44, captured: 105
Interesting tidbit: DNR/LNR claim 1 Javelin missile (minus CLU launcher) captured. Video shows only missile tube container w/o exposing missile. Could be empty tube. Could be missile.

Yes, on the map the Ukraine is in Europe, not in Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia. But because Russia is the other half of this war, we’re filing it there until this nonsense is over.

#8  What would it matter? Claims about these labs started AFTER the invasion started-- it's clearly a post-hoc excuse, not actual casus belli.

Had Putin gone to the UN, presented whatever information they had on these labs and demanded they be dismantled or open to international inspection, he'd have placed the US in a much more difficult place.

As it is, it just looks like a pathetic excuse.

Cut down as they run for their lives: Heartbreaking scenes as Putin rains bombs on Irpin's 'green corridor', killing civilians as they flee while ceasefire to protect 400,000 evacuating Mariupol is shattered within minutes by heavy shelling
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
    • Heavy gunfire and missiles are being shot at Ukranian civillians in the city of Irpin in northern Ukraine

    • City came under attack amid catastrophic invasion that has reduced cities across the country to rubble

    • Comes as ceasefire to allow evacuation of Mariupol is scuppered after just minutes due to shelling

    • First ceasefire on Saturday lasted just 45 minutes before routes were bombed - leaving refugees stranded

    • Volodymyr Zelensky has accused the West of abandoning millions of his people to their deaths

    • Russia is increasingly waging 'war of terror' on civilians as attempts to rapidly takeover Ukraine failed

    • A delusional Putin is insisting that Russia is not bombing Ukrainian cities despite evidence to contrary

    #44  My dear Wife*,

    Neocons hated Trump...

    *that does sound awkward

Not awkward in the least, merely incorrect. Mrs. Wife or trailing, were we on a first name basis, is the proper salutation. TW or tw is what some here have chosen, though it makes me feel very 1960s corporate senior management. Wife is actually my married nym, you see, trailing being the given, (not “Christian name” because I’m not), the whole being a term of art for my role during that delightful period in our lives when Mr. Wife’s career took us far from American shores. Mr. Wife, who finds the whole thing immensely amusing, is indeed away at the moment, helping his parents in what appears to be his father’s final decline.

I’m afraid I don’t understand your goose/gander reference in this context. If you would be so kind as to explain, I’ll happily answer.

I agree that many in the National Review/Weekly Standard crowd became vocal NeverTrumpers, and Bill Krystal, at least, went over to loudly advocating voting for Joe Biden in 2020, while his failed Weekly Standard replacement was quietly funded by various Democratic/Progressive sources. But in doing so they removed themselves from positions of influence with either side of the aisle — I’ve not noticed anything about their thoughts on this or any other subject for a while. President Zelensky is hearing directly from President Biden and the US State Department, any other voices being much smaller in comparison.

Senator Graham goes his own way, as far as I can tell, sometimes supporting Trump/Republican initiatives, sometimes Biden/Democratic ones, using a logic opaque to me that may be the emergent behaviour of sausage making in smoky back rooms.

I can’t imagine that Lt. Col. Flounder, as you so picturesquely name him, has President Zelensky’s ear. It was his malicious testimony about the conversation between Zelensky and President Trump’s ambassador, aimed to protect then-former Vice President Joe Biden’s peculiar business arrangements with President Zelensky’s predecessor, that triggered that failed Congressional impeachment, after all.

Russian Army can now close in along three axes:

That does depend on what percentage of the Russian army is fed, fueled, and mobile due to a complete set of working parts. The after action reports for this exercise are going to be educational for all interested parties, regardless how it turns out.

Well reasoned discourse, indeed, Angavising Forkbeard2228.

#46  An Indian political expert's view

The Russia sanctions, although they hold no promise of changing P---n's behavior, constitute one of the biggest gifts American policymakers have delivered to Beijing.

By effectively putting Russia, the world’s richest country in natural resources, in Beijing’s pocket, the sanctions will yield major dividends for a resource-hungry China, including allowing it to dictate the terms of the bilateral relationship and secure greater access to Russian military technology.

After Biden’s Afghan debacle and failure to deter Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, could Taiwan become his next foreign policy disaster? Xi will likely bide his time and wait for an opportune moment before moving on Taiwan, taking a distracted U.S. by utter surprise and bringing down the curtain on the West’s long ascendancy.

    Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment
Via Facebook page of writer Clarice Feldman
The military situation on the ground has not changed significantly in the past 24 hours. Russian forces continue to mass for renewed offensive operations east and west of Kyiv, west of Kharkiv, and toward Mykolayiv-Odesa but have not yet initiated new large-scale ground attacks.

Russia has increased aerial and artillery/rocket attacks on civilian positions and infrastructure, including known evacuation corridors. Ukrainian forces reportedly conducted a second counter-attack in two days, this time near Mariupol. The Ukrainian air force and air defense forces continue to operate, inflicting damage on Russian ground forces and disrupting Russian air and missile operations.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Russian forces spent the past 24 hours largely regrouping and preparing for renewing offensive operations around Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Mykolayiv.

The Ukrainian General Staff reports the presence of a large concentration of Russian forces west of Kharkiv that it assesses will launch a wide offensive southwest toward the Dnipro River, although no such offensive has begun as of this publication.

Ukrainian Perspective: War. Situation at 10.00 March 6, 11th day of the invasion
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
    [CENSOR] Directions:
The Ukrainian army built a front line. This is an important operational achievement. Russian columns lost the ability to move in any chosen direction. This does not mean that the defense has been stabilized, it means that Ukraine has restored organized resistance. As the Ukrainian leadership did not mobilize the operational reserve and territorial defense before the war, every day of resistance gives us the opportunity to mobilize forces now.

The situation near Kiev remains tense. The enemy continues to slowly push our defenses near Irpen, Bucha and Makarov, there are heavy fighting. Russian troops are trying to take control of the Zhytomyr highway and cover Kiev from the west to block logistics and delivery of reinforcements. Russia is launching missile and air strikes on various cities in the Zhytomyr region. According to the Chechen scenario, the Russian army simply demolishes any suspicious houses with tanks and artillery, without checking whether there are residents or not.

Russia continues to work in various directions to maintain the strategic initiative and not allow the Ukrainian command to concentrate reserves. The shackling of Ukrainian troops is carried out with the help of aviation and missile terror, the destruction of major cities. The enemy is trying to gain a foothold in the southern direction.

    The situation near Kharkov.
The enemy is not conducting active ground combat operations, but is trying to restrain the actions of the defenders of Kharkiv by constant missile, artillery and air strikes. In Kharkov, the Russians are demonstratively destroying residential areas, dozens of blows were inflicted on high-rise buildings, the city's life support system.

Russian troops are regrouping in the Balakleya area. They threaten to cover Kharkiv from the east. But the main direction of action of this group is Raisins. Raisins are being attacked by Russian aircraft and artillery, and the Russians' attempt to capture the city quickly is repulsed.

    Zaporozhye region.
Russian troops are concentrating their efforts on consolidating the captured Energodar and the Zaporozhye NPP. Another Russian group threatens Gulyay-Polya and hangs over the southern flank of the OOS force. The Russians are building a railway and trying to gain a foothold in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.

It is obvious that the activity of two Russian groups in Balakleya and Polohy poses threats in different directions, but the most likely direction of their strikes will be an attempt to narrow the supply corridor in the Donbass with raids on Izyum from the north and Gulyai-Pole in the south and force Ukrainian troops to leave Donbass.

Mariupol is a key city in the southern Donbass. He fought heroically in the encirclement under fire from Russian aircraft and artillery. An 18-month-old child died today in Mariupol from a direct hit by a Russian shell. The Russians are trying to knock out our garrison and force it to surrender. Russia is trying to create a scenario of the second Ilovaisk in Mariupol, only on an even larger scale.

They were excited. Ukrainian troops heroically hold Volnovakha. The Russian command continues its attacks to capture the city, to drive our troops out of the southern Donbass and to further push our positions away from Mariupol. Yesterday, in the battle near Volnovakha, our soldiers destroyed the commander of the Russian Sparta battalion.

    The Nikolaev area.
Ukrainian troops drove the Russians away from Nikolaev and Voznesensk. However, the enemy continues to pose a threat in these areas, he intends to capture our main ports and the South Ukrainian nuclear power plant. The situation remains tense.

    Chernigov.
The heroic defense of the city continues, our troops are firmly holding their ground. The Russians are trying to suppress our forces with constant aviation terror.

    Sumy, Okhtyrka.
The heroic defense of these cities continues. Russian aviation terrorists have destroyed the life support systems of these cities to force residents to leave their land.

The popular uprising in all the occupied territories is invaluable. The united resistance of the people of Ukraine thwarts all Putin's plans to seize the country and compensates for the mistakes made in the organization of our defense, especially in the south. Therefore, any kind of resistance, explicit or implicit, from every citizen, any help with information, participation in protests, sabotage against the occupiers are of great importance.

    Conclusions:
Ukraine withstood the first blow of the Russian army. The operational pause in the actions of Russian troops is associated with heavy losses and regrouping to tighten the rear.

The Russian army has changed its strategy. After the failure of attempts to encircle Kyiv and Kharkiv, the Russian command focused its main efforts on the struggle for communications and cutting off the Black Sea and Donbass from Ukraine.

After a series of defeats in ground battles, the Russian command began to use outright terrorist tactics and shot down residential neighborhoods, killing civilians who were allegedly going to "denazify."

It is possible to stop the advance of Russian columns and disrupt their maneuver only through constant pressure on their communications. Only the use of active defensive tactics in various directions will force the enemy to retreat and liberate our land. An operational pause is necessary for the enemy to consolidate and recover losses, he is also very vulnerable.

Ukraine still surpasses the Russian army in numbers, motivation, and fighting spirit, but the enemy has an advantage in mobility, including armored vehicles and artillery, in aviation and missile weapons. The key factor that predetermines the Ukrainian victory is the unity of the Ukrainian people in the struggle. However, to win the war requires mobilization, armament and training. And this is the time we seek at the cost of resistance. Work on victory goes every second, all Ukrainians are united by only one thing - the desire to win.

Zakharova: Western media machine has driven its citizens to madness
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[RIA Novosti] The Western information-political machine and the media have driven their citizens, who are on the verge of nationalism towards Russia's actions, because of how the media describe them, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on the Rossiya 1 TV channel.

"We must pay tribute to the information and political machine of the West, which, through social networks, through instant messengers and mailing lists, naturally, through the media, has brought the population of their countries to some level of insanity. This is the land to which the same "Western machine" has approached. by simply turning their people from people who seemed to be told about some kind of high principles, into people who are already on the edge of some kind of nationalism. That's for sure," she said.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24. President Vladimir Putin called its goal "the protection of people who have been subjected to bullying and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years." For this, according to him, it is planned to carry out the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, to bring to justice all war criminals responsible for "bloody crimes against civilians" in Donbass.

#8  The copy-paste cabal of UK-US media alone is not enough for a comprehensive view of any situation. All it leads to is the position the politicians and their mouthpieces want to herd you into.

What Rantburg does is supplement your intake of info, by carefully collated voices and bits of articles, news, opinions from multiple perspectives. Because we're not going to be herded. Or guilted or panicked or browbeat into believing the mainstream line. People here form their own opinions and are unapologetically inclined to keep or revise them.

Badanov has been kind enough to fill in for Fred, and is bringing us translations of the word from Russia since before this was just sabre rattling.

It's only prudent to keep abreast of not only what your enemy is publishing, it pays to also know what kind of bullshit is being fed to masses round the world. So there are sometimes reports and articles out of terrorist states, hostile kingdoms and utter fantasies from the AP and BBC too.

If MIGS fly out of Poland, will they not return to Poland for maintenance, fuel, ammo? Russia will not stand by and let this happen. We are on the precipice.

November elections suddenly no longer discussed. Perhaps there will be no elections. Domestic oil production in abeyance, for good reason? When Poland's air bases are attacked with Russian cruise missiles. What will NATO do ?

#16  If MIGS fly out of Poland, will they not return to Poland for maintenance, fuel, ammo?

Why would they? Ukraine fly and maintains MiG-29s. Fuel and weapons are already pouring over the border. Doesn't matter if it is Stingers or AA-11s.

According to preliminary data, the building of the patrol center was damaged, OSCE communication equipment was destroyed, and two cars belonging to the mission were burned.

It is specified that the evacuation of all employees of the OSCE SMM is almost completed. The head of the mission and senior leadership remained on the territory of Ukraine. All of them will leave the country in the near future.

Earlier , REGNUM reported that the OSCE mission in Kharkov announced the continuation of the evacuation of the team. It is noted that the head of the SMM and the senior leadership of the mission in Ukraine will remain in the country until the evacuation of all employees is completed.

Ukrainian security forces shelled Yenakiyevo – DPR JCCC
[REGNUM] The electrical substation that feeds the production facilities of the Yenakiyevo Metallurgical Plant was de-energized as a result of shelling by the armed forces of Ukraine (APU). This was announced on March 6 by the representative office of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) in the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of the Ceasefire Regime (JCCC).

“ Information has been received about damage as a result of shelling by the armed forces of Ukraine of the settlement of Yenakiyevo… ,” the report says. “ As a result of a power line break, the electrical substation on the territory of the Enakievsky Metallurgical Plant was de-energized .”

The substation was powered by the backup input.

As REGNUM reported , on March 6, the deputy head of the People's Militia Department of the DPR, Eduard Basurin , told reporters that three 220-mm Uragan multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), as well as tanks and other weapons of Ukrainian formations, were captured during successful offensive operations by the People's Militia units DNR.

Armed Forces of Ukraine shelled Gorlovka in the DPR with Tochka-U missiles
[REGNUM] Kiev militants fired Tochka-U missiles at the settlement of Gorlovka in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), a residential building collapsed, a school was damaged, and three people were under rubble. This was stated by the mayor of the city Ivan Prikhodko.

“As a result of the shelling of Gorlovka by Tochka-U, the building of school 55 along Lenin Avenue, 60 was damaged. The glazing on the flight of stairs and in the classroom from the side of the MOLOKO store was damaged. On Lvovskaya Street, 38, as a result of the collapse of a house, three civilians found themselves under the rubble. An ambulance left for the scene,” the mayor wrote on his Telegram channel.

As REGNUM reported , over the past 24 hours, DPR air defense systems intercepted and destroyed four Tochka-U tactical missiles launched by Ukrainian militants, the press service of the People's Militia of the DPR reports.

Russian Investigative Committee of the Federation to investigate the shelling of citizens leaving Mariupol
[REGNUM] The chairman of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia Alexander Bastrykin instructed to investigate the fact of the shelling of a group of civilians leaving Mariupol. This was reported on March 6 in the press service of the UK.

"The head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation pointed out the need to promptly take all measures aimed at identifying persons involved in criminal activities to destroy the civilian population, collect and record evidence," the statement says.

As REGNUM reported , on March 6, the People's Militia of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) stated that the militants of the Azov National Battalion (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) shot a column of civilians who were trying to leave Mariupol along the humanitarian corridor in the direction of Novoazovsk.

Ukrainian intelligence spooks detained in the LPR
[REGNUM] In the Lugansk People's Republic, two intelligence agents of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who were planning terrorist attacks in the LPR and Russia, were detained. This was reported on March 6 to the Ministry of State Security of the LPR.

"Agents of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine were sent to the territory of the LPR in order to prepare and commit terrorist acts, both within the Republic and on the territory of the Rostov region of the Russian Federation," the ministry said.

It is noted that the detainees served in the "Right Sector" (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation). At the end of February, they were preparing for a terrorist attack on the territory of the oil depot in the city of Rovenki. However, due to the activation of hostilities in Stanytsia Luhanska, the curator canceled the task.

After the transition of Stanitsa Luganskaya under the control of the LPR, the scouts were given the task to arrive in Novoshakhtinsk, Rostov Region, from March 7 to March 9 in order to carry out terrorist attacks on critical infrastructure facilities.

The DPR announced the release of 68 settlements
[REGNUM] As of March 6, the troops of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) have already liberated 68 settlements previously occupied by the armed forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was reported by the headquarters of the territorial defense of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

"As of the evening of March 6, 68 settlements that were previously under the control of the armed formations of Ukraine have been liberated ,” the headquarters said in a Telegram channel." … A group of DPR troops reached the border with the Zaporozhye region and established control over a number of settlements."

As REGNUM reported , on March 6, the deputy head of the People's Militia Department of the DPR, Eduard Basurin , told reporters that more than a hundred servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had defected to the side of the DPR since the beginning of the special operation.

Ukraine's Government Opens Website To Recruit Foreigners To 'International Legion'
[Radio Free Europe] KYIV -- Ukraine's government has started a website to recruit foreign volunteers to an "international legion" to fight invading Russian troops, following repeated calls by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for outsiders to join in his country's defense.

His office announced the website's launch on March 5 and said, "foreigners who want to help Ukraine can find a detailed, step-by-step instruction on the website on how to join the just fight with the aggressor."

It suggested that people contact the Ukrainian Embassy in their respective countries.

Such participation in foreign conflicts is banned in many countries.

The UN Mercenary Convention of 2001 also prohibits the recruitment, use, financing, and training of mercenaries.

The Ukrainian recruitment website says contracts with the government can be signed on arrival in Ukraine.

Zelenskiy has said several times that Ukraine welcomes foreigners who want to join Ukrainian forces fighting Russian troops since their invasion began on February 24.

Russia warns against allowing Ukrainian military to use foreign airfields
[JPost] Yassss, anything else M'Lord? The Russians don't want those Polish MIGs into play. What are they gonna do? Bomb or close Polish airspace? Everybody's got hostages
The Russian Defense Ministry warned Romania and other countries against allowing Ukrainian military aircraft to use their airfields, saying that doing so could be regarded as "the involvement of these states in an armed conflict," according to TASS.

"Practically all combat-ready aircraft of the Kiev regime have been destroyed," said Defense Ministry spokesperson Maj.-Gen. Igor Konashenkov. "At the same time, we are reliably aware of Ukrainian combat aircraft that previously flew to Romania and other border countries. Please note that the use of the airfield network of these countries for the deployment of Ukrainian military aviation with subsequent use against the Russian armed forces can be regarded as the involvement of these states in an armed conflict"

The Defense Ministry additionally claimed that the airfield of the Ukrainian Air Force in Vinnytsia was destroyed by a high-precision weapon by the Russian Armed Forces on Sunday.

Ukrainian journalist Andriy Tsaplienko had claimed that the missile was fired from the disputed territory Transnistria - a former Soviet breakaway state situated between Moldova and Ukraine - although Transnistria has denied this.

The Ukrainian Air Force later announced that the attack on Vinnytsia was carried out with eight missiles fired from Russian bombers from over the Black Sea.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian rockets had completely destroyed the civilian airport of the central-western region capital of Vinnytsia on Sunday.

#4  Nah, they are just agents anymore of the decision process who have networks laid. Now, getting Remington to raise the avatar and pledge ammo to Ukraine (plus shipping and handling) smells of a Neocon network.

Now, that said, there are reports that this news item was dismissed by Poland, as this is that 2 week old story, not today's reconsideration.

I had a neo-Klingon ask my opinion about the situation. I asked "Do you think serious people are in charge?" Which got a dramatic pause. Well, here then is a Agit-Prop piece gone stupid wrong. Either they were considering Flying Tiger Club, and Poland was like, don't talk about Flying Tiger Club -or- was considered and Poland was like Not Interested in That Way. Which makes this morning's prop piece on a Major Media Network totally non-nonsensical, breathless reporting on a 2 week old debunked float and airing Fake News, or just too stupid to check the date.

#7  The west, esp America, has a huge asymmetric advantage in the air. Much more than Russia has against Ukraine. It's a bluff because if Russia ever acted on it, their Air Force and armored columns in Ukraine would be destroyed in days. That's from a standing still start, since the Biden Admin refuses to prepare.

    China-Japan-Koreas
Soft landing? China lowers economic growth goal
[DW] Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said the country's external environment is becoming "volatile, grave and uncertain." China's economy has suffered amid anti-COVID-19 measures and a crackdown on real estate debt.
It looks like China really needs the handling fees from Russian credit cards.
China cut its annual growth target on Saturday amid an economic slump. The new target has been set at its lowest level in decades.

HOW MUCH GROWTH IS CHINA AIMING FOR?
China will aim for growth of "around 5.5%" this year, Premier Li Keqiang said in a report to the country's legislature.

"Achieving this goal will require arduous efforts," Li said in the report.

Last year, China aimed for economic growth of 8.1%.

In December, President Xi Jinping's government announced a "policy pivot" toward shoring up growth in the country. This moved China away from long-term initiatives to cut debt and carbon emissions, as well as nurturing growth based on consumer spending rather than trade and investment.

As a way to stimulate growth, the Chinese government has promised tax cuts for entrepreneurs and told banks to increase lending.

The government is also injecting money into the economy by increasing spending on public works.

WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE CHINESE ECONOMY?
Li's report said commodity prices "remain high and prone to fluctuation," adding that China's external environment is becoming "increasingly volatile, grave and uncertain."

China's economy is under pressure from weak global demand for the country's exports.

Strict "zero-COVID" measures, including lockdowns and closed borders, have stymied growth from manufacturing hubs, tourist centers and port cities.

Chinese economic growth dropped to 4% in the final quarter of 2021 after a crackdown on debt in China's real estate industry. The crackdown led to a slump in construction and housing sales.

China's second-largest real estate developer, Evergrande, has been under pressure since last year as it has not been able to pay back its liabilities. In January, Evergrande suspended the trading of its shares on the Hong Kong exchange.
